Creator Seth MacFarlane is set to take the mickey-takes into a whole new universe.

The Starship Enterprise's original Captain Kirk turned down a cameo appearance for 2009's Star Trek movie, because of the fairly large part played by Leonard Nimoy. role.

In the new film it could be that Shatner plays an older version of Captain Kirk in much the same way that Nimoy did with Spock due to the time travel elements of the film.

Speaking on MTV Abrams said: "The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one,"

"And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead."

The sequel is scheduled for release in 2012.
