TEXT: ROMANS 3:21-31

MEMORY VERSE: “There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” – ROMANS 3:22-24 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

The mystery is a popular kind of story. The puzzle at the story’s beginning is solved by the detective who discovers all the clues and figures out “whodunit.” The story moves to a climax when the mystery is revealed.

The problem of evil in the world is arguably the greatest mystery. Why does the world contain so much suffering? Why do human beings seem so persistently wicked? Skeptics wonder if there is a God, one who is good and powerful, then why does he allow such things to go on?

Yet if God were to end evil in the world, would he not have to destroy evil humanity (compare Genesis 6:5-7)? And in the end, has not every human who knows right from wrong proven to be a participant in the pervasive evil? How could anyone survive God’s just judgment? How can he be merciful and still bring judgment on evil?

Today’s text makes the bold assertion that through Jesus Christ, God has revealed the solution to that great mystery. In Christ, God has brought his righteous judgment on evil. In Christ, God has made mercy freely available to everyone. In Christ, God has solved the mystery of the ages.

LESSON AIMS: To help class members to:

IDENTIFY the only means that can make people right.
DESCRIBE how Christ’s death and resurrection enable God to be both just and justifier of those who believe.
EXPRESS gracious acceptance to others as a result of having received God’s grace.

THE LESSON

1. FREE PARDON THROUGH FAITH — ROMANS 3:21-24

a. How does a person’s coming “short of the glory of God” reveal itself today?

b. How does knowing that you are justified by grace, not your own goodness, make a difference in your life? How should it?

God had liberated Israel from bondage in Egypt, and now Christ liberates sinners from bondage to sin.

2. JESUS CHRIST AS THE SACRIFICE FOR THE SIN OF MANKIND — ROMANS 3:25-26

a. In what ways does Christ’s death on your behalf help you better understand God’s character?

That God released His Son implies the uniqueness of God’s love for humankind (1 John 3:1).

3. THE GOD OF ALL — ROMANS 3:27-31

a. How should the truth of verse 28 affect a Christian’s life?

b. How does God’s grace help you experience unity and fellowship with other Christians?

Through Christ, God receives all people as they are in their differences.

THE CONCLUSION:

In the best mystery stories, the audience is uncertain as to how the mystery will be solved until the very end. All the clues are clear, but how they fit together is obscure. When the solution is revealed, a good mystery prompts the audience to express satisfaction with the outcome. “Yes, that makes sense. It had to be that way.”

The gospel is just such a solution to the mystery discussed in the Introduction. If there is any meaning in the world, there must be a God who demands justice. But if God is just, then we are subject to his judgment because of our sins. We need a God who is merciful.

In Christ, God is both just and justifier, both righteous and merciful. The cross solves the mystery and answers our deepest need.

PRAYER: Father, we thank you that through Christ’s blood we sinners are counted as your righteous people. By your mercy, lead us to accept one another in our differences as graciously as you have accepted us.

UNDER SIN'S POWER

TOPIC FOR TODAY: UNDER SIN'S POWER

TEXT: ROMANS 3:9-20

MEMORY VERSE: “No one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.” – ROMANS 3:20 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

Do you believe what you see in the mirror? Certainly we all know that the images we see there are those of ourselves, not someone else. But do we really recognize the significance of what we see in the mirror? Do we notice that we no longer look as we once did? Or do we still mostly see the person in the mirror from years back? Do we see the way we have become different, or do we imagine we look and can act as we once did?

The reality of changing appearance is hard to admit as years pass. Harder still are the intangible realities regarding who we truly are as people. Some have an unrealistically negative view of themselves: I’m a failure; no one can love me; surely God is very unhappy with me. Others may have the opposite: an unrealistically positive view of themselves. In either case, we may arrive at our unrealistic view because we compare ourselves with others, concluding that we are markedly better or worse than the people we know.

The gospel is a reality check, like an honest look in a mirror, on our estimate of ourselves. Today’s text summarizes a key aspect of that reality check.

LESSON AIMS: To help class members to:

· SUMMARIZE humanity’s situation in relation to God’s law.

· REBUT the argument that, since everyone sins, it’s not a problem; God will save us anyway.

· WRITE a prayer of confession and repentance for one area of sin that besets him or her.

THE LESSON

1. NO ONE IS RIGHTEOUS — ROMANS 3:9-18

a. What misconceptions do people hold regarding sin? How do we correct these?

b. How does the cross of Christ help you grasp the depth of the human problem of sin?

c. How should an appropriate “fear of God” be demonstrated?

You are justified when you repent and accept the offer of sacrifice Jesus made for you.

2. PURPOSE OF THE LAW — ROMANS 3:19-20

a. How has Scripture helped you understand your position as one who has rebelled against God?

b. From verse 20 we see that we are not as good as we think we are. How do we keep from fooling ourselves in this regard?

You are made right with God by faith in Jesus not by observing the law. Galatians 2:16.

THE CONCLUSION:

The words of today’s text are quite discouraging if read by themselves. But thanks be to God, they bring to a close what is only the beginning of the message of Romans! The problem of human sin is deep and wide. It goes back to the very beginning of the human family and extends to every member in every place in the world. This problem cannot be solved by human endeavour; we know only how to create and perpetuate the problem. If the problem is to be solved, then God must be the one to solve it.

We modern-day Christians can easily fail to hear how this message addresses us. Certainly we see Israel’s failure as we read the Old Testament. But, we think, that is them, not us. We have no problem affirming the power of sin in our own world. We see it all around us in others’ degraded, chaotic, ruined lives. But, we think, that is them, not us.

Forgetting what our lives would be without God’s work in Christ, ignoring how sin’s power still reveals itself in us, we can imagine that the universal power of sin is not a factor in our lives. If we succumb to such thinking, we become the kind of people Paul corrected in Romans: those who imagine that their position as God’s people gives them a superior status over others.

May our study of this text remind us that we, like they, are victims of sin’s power, to be saved from it only by God’s grace.

PRAYER: Gracious God, grant that we can see ourselves as we really are, as you see us. Purge from our hearts the power of sin. Help us to utterly rely on your forgiveness in Christ Jesus.

IGNORING GOD’S TRUTH WITHIN US

TOPIC FOR TODAY: IGNORING GOD’S TRUTH WITHIN US

TEXT: ROMANS 2:17-29

MEMORY VERSE: “It is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” – ROMANS 2:13 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

The story is told that when Queen Elizabeth II of England was a young girl, her father, King George VI, told her to do something.

“I am a princess,” she is said to have replied, “and I will do as I please.”

“Yes, you are a princess,” said her father. “And that is why, for the rest of your life, you will never simply do as you please.”

Privilege brings not just honour or power but responsibility. The greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility. Our lesson text is a solemn restatement of this principle. Paul reminded his Christian readers of Jewish background that their high calling as guardians of God’s law carried the responsibility of obedience. This is a responsibility that they, along with all people, had failed.

LESSON AIMS: To help class members to:

· STATE the difference between knowing God’s law and obeying God’s law.

· CONTRAST the person who knows more of God’s law but does not obey with the person who knows less yet does obey.

· REPENT of failure to act on what he or she knows of God’s law.

THE LESSON

1. VAIN PRIDE OF THE JEWS — ROMANS 2:17-20

a. What will be your role in improving your church’s efforts in being a “guide” and a “light” to those in spiritual darkness?

b. In what ways do Christians sometimes project a “holier than thou” attitude because of their knowledge of God’s Word? How do we deal with this problem?

What you do in obedience to God’s law is the best sermon that can ever be preached.

2. DISPLAY OF HYPOCRISY — ROMANS 2:21-24

a. What are some common attitudes of Christians that easily make unbelievers have contempt for God?

b. In what areas do Christians seem to need most to improve in making their practice of God’s Word match their knowledge of it? Why?

God’s standard is that you should live by the truth you know through His Word.

3. PRIDE OF PHYSICAL CIRCUMCISION CONDEMNED — ROMANS 2:25-29

a. What are some “externals” that may become sources of false confidence for today’s Christians? Why?

b. What are some good steps Christians can take to become better circumcised-in-heart?

Only faith in Jesus and acceptance of the remission of sin through His blood can make you to be in right standing with God.

THE CONCLUSION:

The Israelites’ failure to keep God’s law affected not just themselves. God’s promise was that all nations would be blessed through Abraham’s offspring (Genesis 22:18), that Israel would become “a light for the Gentiles” (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6). So it seemed that Israel’s unfaithfulness could prove to be the undoing of God’s plans for the world.

But the gospel reveals something vital. Though Israel proved unfaithful, God brought his plan to fulfillment through one in Israel who did prove faithful, namely Jesus. His faithfulness, seen in submitting to death on the cross to take the punishment of the guilty, fulfilled God’s purpose and solved the problem of human failure for both Jews and Gentiles. How great is our failure? The cross shows us. How powerful is God’s solution to our failure? The cross shows us.

For the vast majority of us today, claiming spiritual privilege because of Jewish identity or circumcision seems very foreign. But we know how easy it is to claim such privilege on similar grounds. Looking at the chaotic world around us, we are tempted to congratulate ourselves that we know God and his Word. It is easy to observe the ignorance of the world and contrast that ignorance with what we know of God. Then it is all too easy to take the next step and think the difference has to do with something special about ourselves.

We would be better off contemplating the contrast between the good that other people see in us outwardly and the evil that we know still lives in our hearts. That reflection will lead us to think how God has welcomed us by his grace despite our failures. That in turn will remind us of how much we have in common with the world and of how much we have to share with it.

PRAYER: O God, we surrender our innermost selves to you! May we be yours, inside and out.

IGNORING GOD’S PLAIN TRUTH

TOPIC FOR TODAY: IGNORING GOD’S PLAIN TRUTH

TEXT: ROMANS 1:18-23, 28-32

MEMORY VERSE: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” – ROMANS 1:20 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

The title above is a classic slogan in advertising. Many businesses try to persuade us that their products are original, genuine, the best. Of course, in some cases we cannot tell the difference between the so-called genuine item and a substitute. We occasionally may conclude that the substitute offers better value. But in many instances, we avoid substitutes and insist on “the real thing.”

Today’s text is about life’s most important choice regarding the genuine and substitutes. Our text insists that the one, true God is clearly revealed to all people. None can rightly say that they have no knowledge of the true God.

Tragically, however, we see how people ignore the true God and accept substitutes. That choice is tragic because it leads to the degradation and disharmony that ruin lives. More seriously, it also leads to eternal punishment.

LESSON AIMS: To help class members to:

· LIST some ways that people change the truth of God into lies.

· EXPLAIN how God’s general revelation makes humans morally responsible to him.

· IDENTIFY in his or her life one besetting sin and the worldly lie behind it and make a plan for change.

THE LESSON

1. SUPPRESSING THE TRUTH — ROMANS 1:18-20

a. What are some ways the truth is being supressed today? How can we do better?

b. In what specific ways do you see creation revealing God’s nature? And how should humankind’s ideal response (of appreciation) to God be?

Supressing God’s truth is wickedness and it attracts God’s judgement

2. THE WICKEDNESS OF THE PEOPLE EXPOSED — ROMANS 1:21-23

a. Is it possible to know and yet ignore God’s truth? If so, what are the possible reasons for this? How can we help ourselves in such situations?

b. How do we guard against subconsciously attaching more importance to temporary things than to the eternal God? How can we do better?

It is foolishness to ignore or deny God’s existence or reject the salvation that is in Christ.

3. GOD’S JUDGMENT ON THE WICKED — ROMANS 1:28-32

a. How would you identify someone whose heart is hardened to God’s truth, laws and instructions? Romans 1:29-32. How can such person be helped?

b. What can we include in a list of characteristics of a life in submission to God, in contrast with what Paul lists for the life in rebellion against God?

The danger of rejecting God’s knowledge is beyond what human mind can fathom.

THE CONCLUSION:

In verse 18, Paul speaks of those who “hold” or “suppress” the truth. This practice has been followed throughout the history of the world, beginning with Satan, who suppressed the truth by telling Eve the great lie, “Ye shall not surely die.” (Gen. 3:4) Under the evil influence of the Adversary, mankind in general has followed a similar course, putting “darkness for light, and light for darkness.”—Isa. 5:20. Unfortunately, many believers unconsciously participate in this act. We are gradually becoming a people with little or no respect for the gospel of Christ. Paul declared in vs 16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes...” The truth about Christ’s birth, His life, death and resurrection is the truth that must never be ignored.

PRAYER: Lord, please save us from every act of ignoring the truth about you and your works.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF DISOBEDIENCE

TOPIC FOR TODAY: THE CONSEQUENCES OF DISOBEDIENCE

TEXT: ZEPHANIAH 3:1-8

MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore wait for me,” declares the Lord, “for the day I will stand up to testify.” — Zephaniah 3:8 NIV

INTRODUCTION

Most of us often remember our birthdays and the dates of our anniversaries. Even though we may not have any specific plans for celebrating, but we may observe the day on our calendar as it comes.

Getting ready for the day of the Lord is quite different, mainly because we do not know when that specific day will be. The prophet Zephaniah warned of a day of judgment in his own time, but he also prophesied a sweeping, global administration of divine judgment. Jesus provided an unmistakable warning regarding that final day: “About that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Matthew 24:36). This is not a date that one can circle on a calendar as we would “save the date” for an upcoming wedding. A better word of advice comes from Peter on the Day of Pentecost: “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation” (Acts 2:40).

In truth, the only way one can prepare for the coming day of the Lord is to be a devoted, day-by-day servant of Jesus. To be faithful to him, even in the little things, is to be making big plans for that special day.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

IDENTIFY the objects of the Lord’s condemnation and the reasons for it.

· EXPLAIN why the topic of God’s judgment is as relevant today as it was to Zephaniah’s audience.

· TELL specifically how the theme of God’s judgment will influence his or her daily living and message to an unsaved world.

THE LESSON

1. GOD’S ATTACK ON DISOBEDIENT JUDAH — ZEPHANIAH 3:1-6

a. What are some ways to address the tragic spiritual condition of modern cities? What will be your part in this?

b. How can we discern and accept the Lord’s correction in various circumstances?

c. In addition to praying, what can we do when leaders fail to carry out their responsibilities?

God is just and will not ignore the sins of His people if they fail to repent.

2. UNREPENTANT JUDAH — ZEPHANIAH 3:7

a. What place should fear of God have in our daily walk with Him? Why?

God wants you to learn from your past mistakes, repent and escape their consequences.

3. THE UNAVOIDABLE PUNISHMENT — ZEPHANIAH 3:8

a. We must not persist in our sin. God is patient, but there are consequences to our actions. What causes us to persist in our sin even though we know of the negative consequences?

If you choose to remain in sin, you will not escape God’s punishment.

THE CONCLUSION: The late comedian George Carlin is quoted as saying, “I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me—they’re cramming for their final exam.” In the process of receiving certain certificates and degrees as part of our education, most of us have learned what it’s like to have to prepare for a major exam.

Nonetheless, things are made easier by the fact that every exam is scheduled for a certain day or a series of days. But no one knows the day or the hour when we will take God’s “final exam.” Such a day is indeed coming—a Day of Judgment—and no one will be exempt (2 Corinthians 5:10; Romans 14:12). Even though we do not know when that day will be, we do not have to live in a constant state of dread regarding whether or not we will “pass our final.” We know that we can stand before the Lord, the righteous judge, on that day, because Jesus took the penalty for our sins upon himself at the cross (1 Peter 2:24).

We are cautioned by the fact that Judah, the nation of God’s covenant people, is the first nation mentioned by name in Zephaniah’s judgment list (Zephaniah 1:4). This truth resonates in 1 Peter 4:17: “For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household.”

The promise of a coming day of the Lord should never produce a sense of smugness among Christians that all the sinners will get their just deserts in the end. The promise of that day should instead move us to remain continually humble before the Lord and to be more committed than ever to helping others prepare for the day of the Lord.

PRAYER: Father, we recognize that your wrath against sin is real and that our sin is real. But just as real is your grace demonstrated in Jesus’ payment for our sins on the cross. We praise you for being not only just but also merciful.

DAY OF JUDGEMENT

TOPIC FOR TODAY: DAY OF JUDGEMENT

TEXT: ZEPHANIAH 1:4-6, 14-16; 2:3

MEMORY VERSE: “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.” — Zephaniah 2:3 NIV

INTRODUCTION

In the beginning of the book of the same name, Zephaniah prophesied of God’s coming judgment because of the idolatry that had filled Judah and Jerusalem. Zephaniah dealt with this particular aspect of the unfaithfulness of God’s people in major detail. Many of the practices condemned by the prophet anticipate the reforms of King Josiah in 622 B.C.

Zephaniah started off giving a sweeping vision of what will happen on the Day of the Lord, a day when everything would be consumed. This picturesque description of God’s wrath will serve as a bookend to chapter two, which is more encouraging and offers hope. Here, in the midst of judgment, God’s people were encouraged to repent and seek Him.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

LIST characteristics of “the day of the Lord.”
COMPARE and contrast what Zephaniah says about the coming “day of the Lord” with what the New Testament says about “the day of the Lord,” when Christ returns.
IDENTIFY one hindrance in his or her life to seeking righteousness and make a plan to remove it.

THE LESSON

1. THE SIN OF JUDAH UNVEILED — ZEPHANIAH 1:4-6

a. How do we overcome the various false gods that threaten our relationship with the true God?

b. What techniques, resources, etc., do you use to maintain your spiritual passion so that you continue to seek the Lord?

God does not delight in the destruction of sinners but want all people to come to repentance – 2 Peter 3:9.

2. THE WOES OF THE DAY OF THE LORD — ZEPHANIAH 1:14-16

a. How can we help our church family focus more on the coming day of the Lord? Why is it important to do so?

The day of the Lord is near when He will judge the world and all its inhabitants.

3. AN APPEAL FOR RESPONSE — ZEPHANIAH 2:3

a. What are some ways to seek righteousness in a secularized culture?

The only hope for God’s people is to seek Him and begin to live by His standard.

THE CONCLUSION: Spiritual complacency is very common in our society. Many say they are Christians, but their lifestyle and worldview do not reflect Christian beliefs. Many also take elements of various religions and mix them with Christianity. God’s Word states that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Believers must be careful not to add other false religions, teachings, or practices (e.g., Islam, Buddhism, New Age, numerology, etc.) to the Gospel.

As believers, we must take seriously the teachings of the Lord and endeavor to please Him in all we do. We must turn away from sin and follow God wholeheartedly. Spend some time reading the Bible and praying. Seek the Lord with all your heart. Seek His guidance and meditate on His goodness.

PRAYER: Father, help us live with an eternal perspective in mind, preparing ourselves for the place prepared by Jesus himself for his faithful servants of righteousness.

JOYOUS FAITH

TOPIC FOR TODAY: JOYOUS FAITH

TEXT: LUKE 19:1-10

MEMORY VERSE: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” — Luke 19:10 NIV

INTRODUCTION

The past few years have seen a great deal of attention on the problem of bullying. We all remember bullies from our growing-up years: girls and boys who picked on those seen as weak or shy. Bullies sometimes did this to extort money or possessions, sometimes to gain status among peers, sometimes simply for the perverse enjoyment of tormenting others. A new twist on this in the twenty-first century is the extension of bullying via social media. One tragic result is highly publicized suicides of vulnerable adolescents.

The other side of bullying has been the payback factor, with instances of mass shootings in schools attributed to boys seeking revenge for having been bullied. But revenge for bullying can come in other, less violent ways. Sometimes an adult who was bullied as a child will use a position of influence in the business world to exact delayed revenge in various ways. For example, those who were always favored in school because of good looks or athletic ability may become the unfavored ones for career advancement and work assignments.

Perhaps that was the situation of Zacchaeus in today’s lesson. Luke 19:3 tells us that “he was short.” Using our “sanctified imagination,” we might speculate that this resulted in his being teased as a child and becoming a target of bullies. So in his adult occupation as a tax collector for the hated Roman overlords, he was in a position to enforce his will on his fellow Jews. It’s easy to speculate that this little man exacted revenge over and over for his childhood traumas. The bullied boy (again, speculation) had become the oppressive tax man. But an encounter with Jesus changed that situation.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

RETELL the story of Jesus’ blessing the children.
EXPLAIN why Jesus used children as an example of the ideal candidate for the kingdom of God.
EXAMINE himself or herself for the absence of childlike faith and make a plan for change.

THE LESSON

1. ZACCHAEUS SOUGHT TO SEE JESUS — LUKE 19:1-5

a. What reactions can we expect when Jesus “comes to town” today through a newly planted church? Why?

b. The stature of Zacchaeus initially prevented him from seeing Jesus. Hat are some of the things that can prevent people from seeing Jesus today?

If you truly desire Jesus you will to seek to know and relate with Him more intimately from day to day.

2. ZACCHAEUS RECEIVES SALVATION — LUKE 19:6-10

a. What are some practical ways the church as a body can demonstrate the joy of knowing Christ? Why is it important to do so?

b. What outward, visible changes in a person’s life indicate genuine repentance?

As ambassadors of Christ, we are the conduit through whom others can receive salvation.

THE CONCLUSION: If we truly seek the lost in our communities, what will we find? What sort of sinners would we be willing to bring into the fellowship of our church? Prostitutes? Drug dealers? Addicts and drunks? Unscrupulous millionaires? All these folks need salvation, whether they live in mansions or on the street.

Jesus is no longer among us physically to seek and save the lost. He has given that task to us (Matthew 28:19, 20). We, like Simon Peter, are to fish for people (Luke 5:10), and the fisherman’s net does not discriminate. When cast broadly, the net brings in all manner of fish. We must not withhold the message of salvation from anyone. We must not block anyone’s view of Jesus. Instead, we are to see the unsaved in the unlikeliest of places and invite ourselves, as ambassadors for Jesus, into their lives. And when they respond with joyous faith, we too experience joy as do the angels in Heaven.

PRAYER: Father, we are humbled at your Son’s acceptance of a man such as Zacchaeus! We praise you for accepting us as you did him. We pray in the name of the Son who makes this possible.

INTRODUCTION

It was customary for a mother to bring her children to a rabbi for a blessing, and that was why the mothers of the children in our passage today gathered around Jesus. The disciples, however, thought the children were unworthy of the Master’s time – less important than whatever else He was doing. But Jesus welcomed them, because little children have the kind of faith and trust needed to enter God’s Kingdom.

According to the psalmist, children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). They are special creatures of God. Their lives are characterized by simplicity, sincerity, and truthfulness. They simply believe whatever they are told, especially by their parents whether it seems possible or not. Furthermore, they possess teachable hearts. They love and depend on adults for guidance, without fear or doubt. This week’s lesson is to help us understand why God wants us to have faith like a child before we can enter His Kingdom.

To be truly blessed of the Lord, you must possess childlike faith, with a humble and trusting heart.

THE CONCLUSION: In addition to the tender picture of Jesus holding, loving, and blessing children, our lesson has a second focus: we are reminded that we must be like children to be proper members of the kingdom of God.

God wants our trust. God wants us to be humble. God wants a childlike faith. On some of my darkest days as an adult, I have sung those songs “Jesus loves the little children” and “Jesus loves me, this I know” from my childhood to remind myself that I am still loved by the Saviour of the world. I am still a child in His Kingdom.

If children ruled the world, the result would be chaos. If children led the church, things would be a mess. But if the world and the church were led by responsible, spiritually mature adults who had childlike faith and humble spirits, what a difference we would see! What will you do in the week ahead to make that difference a reality?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us when we were innocent children and for not withholding your love when we became adults. Thank you for showing us how important children are to you and teaching us how important they must be for us. Make us more like children who trust you without reserve. May we rest in your arms and receive your blessings in Jesus’ name.

INTRODUCTION

Here is a one-time encounter a certain deacon had with two people he didn’t know on particular day in a Lagos traffic lock down on a narrow street. There he saw that two cars were responsible; each had a lady at the wheels, and both claimed the right of way. This should be easy the deacon thought, because there were strong indications that the car right at the head of his lane had several bumper stickers that shouted ‘JESUS’ everywhere, and the lady driving was dressed like a respectable church lady. While the lady in the other car would be a ‘no-go area’ for him because she had long braids of different colours, had rings in shapes and sizes fingers, and her finger nails were more of a hawk’s talons.

He decided to approach the Christian lady and pleaded with her to back up her car a little so the other woman can go, since that is what Jesus would have us do. She retorted with her flaming eyes that she would not bulge an inch; that she was there first and would ‘possess her possession,’ that she’s a Christian who would not allow anyone to cheat her. When the deacon saw that he was not getting anywhere with her summed up courage to approach the ‘wild’ and pleaded her saying: ‘Please, because of Jesus Christ would you back up your car so we can all leave here?’ The lady broke down, crying bitterly while she put her car in reverse.

Today’s lesson is the story of two men from Jesus’ world who were on opposite ends of society’s respect gauge. The lesson that Jesus gives shows us that God judges us by what is in our hearts, not by our perceived reputation or social status.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

THE LESSON

1. THE PHARISEE’S WRONG PRAYER METHOD — LUKE 18:9-12

Prayer is a communion with God and He expects us to come to His presence with a humble heart.

2. THE TAX COLLECTOR’S RIGHT PRAYER METHOD — LUKE 18:13-14

a. Which of Jesus’ personal actions helps you most to emulate His humility?

b. What are some ways a church might unintentionally foster a spirit of self-exaltation? How do we avoid this danger?

We are saved by God's atonement and mercy, not by our righteous deeds..

THE CONCLUSION: While Jesus used polar-opposite characters in the parable to make his point, there is nothing that precludes a person who lives in a righteous manner from being humble. Likewise, there is nothing about a grossly sinful lifestyle that automatically engenders humility. Humility is a matter of the heart and of understanding our relationship with the Lord. We should never presume his mercy, just as we must realize we can never earn it.

Any attempt to justify ourselves by pointing out our many good deeds will fall short. Paul reminds us that no one is righteous through personal effort (Romans 3:11, 12). What should we do then? What hope do we have? Our only hope is found in humbly trusting God and his mercy. This is the essence of Christian faith: the recognition that we cannot save ourselves. The best efforts of dedicated people like the Pharisees, people obsessed with keeping the law, fall short. May God be merciful to us, for we too are sinners.

PRAYER: Merciful Father, remove from us the impulses to exalt ourselves. May our hearts be humble, trusting, and compliant to your will.

INTRODUCTION

At least one of the lepers in today’s lesson was a Samaritan. Samaritans, who lived in central Palestine, were distant relatives of first-century Jews. There was great animosity between the two groups in Jesus’ day (see Luke 9:51-53; John 4:9; 8:48), a type of bitter tribalism that had been fuelled by centuries of negative incidents. The Old Testament traces the time line of these from 2 Kings 17 through Ezra 4 and Nehemiah 4. The period of time between the Old and New Testaments saw further antagonism develop.

Concerning lepers, the Samaritans followed the regulations found in Leviticus. This included exclusion from regular village life of those so afflicted. The 10 diseased outcasts of this week’s lesson seem to have consisted of both Jews and Samaritans. We can liken this to a refugee camp made up of people from divergent backgrounds, having been thrown together by desperate circumstances.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· EXPLAIN how gratitude can be a barometer of one’s faith.

· WRITE a prayer expressing gratitude.

THE LESSON

1 . THE LEPERS’ REQUEST — LUKE 17:11-1

a. The cry of the lepers is a simple request for Jesus to have pity. What did this reveal about the condition of their heart and what they knew of Jesus?

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

2. JESUS CHRIST’S RESPONSE — LUKE 17:14

a. When have you had a need met in such a way that God’s involvement was clear? How did you grow spiritually from this experience?

Faith that results in obedience leads to spiritual healing, and cleansing of our leprous, unclean hearts.

3. A HEART OF THANKFULNESS — LUKE 17:15-19

a. What are the possible reasons some Christians have for not expressing their gratitude for what Jesus has done for them? How can we do better in this regard?

b. How does an “attitude of gratitude” contribute to a growing faith?

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

THE CONCLUSION: In this week’s lesson, the grateful man who had leprosy was healed in more than body; his heart was made whole as well. That’s what the other nine missed—how sad! Healing begins with faith, with trusting God. We begin to heal when we yield our independence and throw ourselves into the arms of our Father. Healing is nurtured when we follow this faith with gratefulness as expressed through praise and thanksgiving. If a physician saves my life through skilful heart surgery, it would be natural to want to thank him or her. How much more should we turn and thank God, who heals our hearts and makes us whole for eternity!

PRAYER: O God, heal our hearts! Teach us to praise you gratefully even in the midst of trouble.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wanted to “get even” with someone? If we are offended or mistreated, we may believe we have a right to retaliate, thus evening the score. There is a sense of entitlement here, a belief that bad behaviour toward us gives us a right to pay back. Of course, if we really want to stand up for ourselves, our response will be a little greater, thereby “teaching a lesson” to our tormentor. We don’t just get even; we must win.

In this lesson, Jesus addresses the dynamics of relationship offenses. His solid, practical principles that applied to his disciples in the first century AD are vital yet today. These begin with an understanding of our place in the arena of relationships. This helps us see ourselves as people of faith whose service to God is far more important than keeping score with other people.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· LIST some duties of a Christian as set forth by Jesus.

· EXPLAIN the relationship between growing faith and forgiveness.

· IDENTIFY one way to practice forgiveness on a daily basis.

THE LESSON

1. THE PENALTY FOR TEMPTING OTHERS — LUKE 17:1-2

“Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come."

a. How do some Christians corrupt the minds of one of these little ones and cause them to fall or stumble? And how can this be discouraged amongst believers? Please read Romans 1:28-32; James 3:1; Colossians 1:27-28; Jude 23.

Be warned! Severe punishment awaits anyone who causes any of Jesus’ followers to sin – either by words or deeds.

2. THE DUTY TO REBUKE AND FORGIVE — LUKE 17:3-6

a. In your experience, what makes corrective rebukes effective? How can we apply Jesus’ words without enabling bad behaviour? Please read Leviticus 19:17-18

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,..."

b. We have to forgive those who commit wrongdoings against us. What can keep us from extending forgiveness to those who have committed wrongdoings against us? How can our faith increase?

To rebuke someone who has sinned against us should be an act of love to the person and to God.

3. INSUFFICIENCY OF WORK — LUKE 17:7-10

a. What does this verse say about those Christians who sometimes feel that they deserve extra credit for serving God?

“What percentage of people would finish the statement in this picture with the words ‘more faith’?”

Obedience to God is a duty and obligation, and should not be based on concern for any reward.

THE CONCLUSION: In today’s lesson, Jesus opens to us to an important aspect of forgiveness that we cannot ignore. He knew that the community of his disciples (the future church) had to be a place of forgiveness and grace. We are not to be the hard-edged communities of “earned forgiveness” of his day. Here, we see Jesus’ model of how to forgive without placing limits on forgiveness.

The model situation is for us to recognize when we are wronged, confront the wrongdoer, receive an apology, and release any grudge or ill feelings. This process usually breaks down when the one who has wronged us refuses to accept correction and does not repent. The expectation of an apology can make things worse. This holds true on a daily basis, whether at work or at home, whether in a supermarket or in a restaurant.

Do we expect praise or congratulations for doing the right thing? Must our acts of faithful obedience be rewarded in order for us to continue to do the right thing? Receiving correction in a humble spirit is an act of faith, maybe as difficult an act of faith as there is for a Christian. Humility is not easy, because we do not live in a world that prizes or encourages the humble heart. The worldly model is one of “getting even” for offenses against us.

Let’s put the scorecards away! Let’s have faith much bigger than a tiny mustard seed and allow God to transform our world for him. Mustard seeds and scorecards don’t mix.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may You transform us into servants in the model of your Son Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION

For families that have experienced the return of a prodigal child, the parable of today’s lesson can have a special way of arousing emotions. But that use of the parable should be recognized as an extended application since Jesus crafted the story for a different purpose—a purpose we dare not overlook.

The grace that Christ’s kingdom is built upon is a mystery to so many. In our worst moments, even we who believe in that grace can lose touch with it for a season. We may need forgiveness from someone. Or, we may struggle to grant forgiveness and restoration. This parable of the Prodigal has many lessons. Are there any points at which we might connect? As today’s lesson unfolds, prepare your mind to discover who you find yourself relating to as Jesus teaches with this story. Is it the prodigal son, the forgiving father, or even the older son?

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· SUMMARIZE the parable of the prodigal son.

· IDENTIFY elements of the parable that emphasize the depth of God’s grace.

· COMMIT to showing grace to a modern prodigal.

THE LESSON

1. AN INORDINATE REQUEST — LUKE 15:11-16

a. Have you ever behaved in self-centred and greedy ways? How did it affect you? And how did it affect your relationships?

b. What should a parent consider when deciding between saying no to a child or saying yes in order to let the child learn a life lesson?

People tend to want what they think they deserve. But having more money or more things do not bring happiness.

2. THE RESOLUTION TO RETURN HOME — LUKE 15:17-19

It only takes a decision to return home!

a. How do we know when it’s better to go and seek out a wayward one rather than waiting for him or her to return by personal decision?

Ask God for the forgiveness you need. Then, act on that grace.

3. THE EXTRAVAGANT SON ACCEPTED AND RESTORED — LUKE 15:20-24

a. This parable offers a beautiful picture of the enthusiasm and grace with which our heavenly Father welcomes us home, no matter how we have behaved.” How can we express this image of our heavenly Father in our fellowship?

People go where they know they’ve been prepared for and are cared for! Share your love for others today.

THE CONCLUSION: Jesus offered this parable in response to complaints from the Pharisees and the teachers of the law—religious leaders of the day and experts on the Bible. The fact that Jesus was willing to receive sinners—going so far as even to eat with them!—served as proof to the Pharisees and teachers of the law that he didn’t appreciate the importance of remaining “clean.” What the religious leaders seemed to have overlooked was the possibility of repentance. Jesus came not “to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32).

While the parable can be viewed on a personal level in illustrating God’s acceptance of repentant individuals, many students see a larger theme here: the prodigal son as representing the Gentiles. Surely in Isaiah 49:6, God promised that his servant would not only “restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel,” but also was to be “a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (quoted in Acts 13:47).

This speaks to how we are to view people-groups today. As Jesus welcomed them, so must we. It is our Great Commission to do so (Matthew 28:19, 20). By not doing so, are we pretending to know better than God?

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, people have done things that have made us angry and resentful. Help us to follow Jesus’ example of forgiving acceptance where repentance is real.

A SOUND MIND

INTRODUCTION

Each of Jesus’ encounters taught His apostles about His ministry and what would be required of them as they went into the world as His representatives. In Luke 8:22–25, Jesus and the disciples were alone on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. A windstorm came and tossed the boat so much that the disciples thought they would perish, even though Jesus was with them. Jesus was sleeping in the lower part of the boat, so they woke Him up in a panic. Jesus rebuked the winds and sea, which calmed down. Jesus asked them, “Where is your faith?” They had seen Jesus perform miracles but still doubted. Jesus proved He has power and authority over nature. The disciples wondered who Jesus was that the wind and seas obeyed Him. Today in our lesson, the demons will reveal who Jesus is, thus answering the disciples’ question.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· KNOW the details of Jesus’ healing the Gerasene man from his demons;

· EMPATHIZE with those who have great troubles and to remember their times of trial; and

· START, support, promote, or work in a church counselling program.

THE LESSON

1. JESUS EXERCISED AUTHORITY OVER DEMONS — LUKE 8:26-29

a. If you compare Jesus’ method of healing and deliverance with the practice of some today, what does this reveal to you about Jesus as the Son of God?

Discussion:

Mistreatment of the demonized against Jesus’ love and compassion.
Jesus’ power and authority over Satan, his demons, and all evil.

Demons are powerless against those who trust in Jesus. If we resist the Devil, he will leave us alone. James 4:7

2. JESUS CASTS OUT THE DEMONS — LUKE 8:30-33

a. Jesus didn’t destroy these demons – or send them to the Bottomless Pit. Why did He permit the demons to enter into the pigs?

Discussion:

· Timing of the judgment day.

· In the New Testament, the Bottomless Pit is a prison for the antichrist (Revelation 11:7), scorpions (Revelation 9:33ff), and spirits (Revelation 9:1; 20:1, 3, 7). Satan is shut up for a thousand-year period (Revelation 20:7-10).

The book of Revelation (chp. 9, 11, & 20) portrays the future victory of Jesus over Satan, his demons, and all evil.

3. THE DEMON POSSESSED DELIVERED — LUKE 8:34-39

a. A man had been freed from the Devil’s power, but the people thought only about their livestock (Luke 8:37). In what ways do “Christians” value financial gain over and above the needs of the people? How can we do better?

Discussion:

Self-centeredness and self-love. Consider Romans 2:8; Romans 8:8; and James 3:16.
What love is: 1 Corinthians 13:4–7.
In patronizing, rather than confronting evildoers for their wrongdoing. Proverbs 6:16-19; Matthew 7:21-23; John 8:24; Revelation 2:2; Revelation 21:8.

b. Often Jesus asked those He healed to be quiet about the healing, but He urged this man to return to his family and tell them what God had done for him. Why?

Discussion:

It’s about sharing your faith:

i. Matthew 28:16-20;

ii. Romans 1:12;

iii. Colossians 4:5-6;

iv. 2 Timothy 1:8;

v. 1 Peter 3:15.

When God touches your life, don’t be afraid to share the wonderful experience with family and friends.

THE CONCLUSION: "If it only helps one person, it will have been worth it," we piously say after one of our missions or outreach programs doesn't seem to have much effect. Inside we feel like a failure, but thinking about just one person makes us feel better. Denominational bean-counters and bishops may frown a bit, humph to each other, and mutter about "inefficiency in evangelism." The truth is, however, that one of Jesus' most famous missions was to reach a single, solitary man, and a pretty messed up man at that, the "crazy man" of the Garasenes. And Jesus left the area with only a single convert. Why? Because all people, even messed up people – especially messed up people – are very precious to the Saving Man from Nazareth. Don't ever forget it! Jesus' disciples never did.

PRAYER: Lord, sometimes I am tempted to insulate myself from weird, filthy people. Help me to love the unlovely. Help me to obey you, even when it goes against what I want to do. Help me.

A REVERSAL OF SHAME

INTRODUCTION

This week’s study text is about forgiveness. The New Testament word for “forgive” is aphiēmi, which literally means “to send away.” There are times when we forgive someone who has wronged us, we “send away” the wrong, but we still know where to find it! The woman who anoints Jesus is a sinner. We are not told what has made her a sinner. She may have committed moral sins, and chances are she was also not Jewish, but Jesus welcomes her efforts to honour Him. This results in the removal of her moral shame. She recognizes who Jesus is and He forgives her of her sins. She is in need of grace and Jesus provides it, showing that His grace is available to all. When we finish studying this text, what would be the evidence that we have understood and received what Jesus was teaching and offering to us today? Our action (not thoughts) in repentance!

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

KNOW the story of Jesus’ tenderness for the repentant woman and His forgiveness of her sins;
EXPRESS the great joy that comes from knowing their sins have been forgiven; and
FORGIVE others for their failures, shortcomings, and hurtful actions.

THE LESSON

1. A SINFUL WOMAN ANOINTS JESUS — LUKE 7:36-38

a. In what ways can shame cause us to run away from Jesus?

b. How can we cultivate a desire to honour Jesus no matter what others may think of us?

Now is the opportunity for you to acknowledge your sins, receive Jesus, and have a deliberate turn-around.

2. A SINFUL WOMAN RECEIVES FORGIVENESS — LUKE 7:39-48

a. Those who truly know Christ’ forgiveness can’t help but bring Him honour. How does knowing how much we’ve been forgiven help us to forgive others?

Only those who realize the depth of their sin can appreciate the complete forgiveness God offers them.

3. JESUS COMMENDS HER FAITH — LUKE 7:49-50

a. Some people, especially in the church (sometimes highly placed) are unwilling to forgive others. Based on today’s lesson, what does this say about their testimony and how can you help such people?

Jesus was indeed God and has the power to forgive sins in order to reconcile us back to the Father.

THE CONCLUSION: Many seem to feel no shame for their sinful actions. In fact, if you look at reality TV, some have become celebrities by parading their sin in public. While it may seem like most of the world callously acts without a conscience, most feel shame for what they have done. It may not be apparent, but we all experience a desire to hide from others and God because of our sin. Jesus shows us that we do not have to hide, but we must be bold in honouring Him as the only One who can offer forgiveness. Christ’s acceptance of us is why we no longer have to wear a mask of shame. Those who boldly sin and display their wicked behaviour and those who trust in their own righteousness still bear the weight of their sin. Their shameful behaviour cannot be covered no matter how much they try to hide it. Forgiveness and acceptance can only be found in Christ Jesus.

PRAYER: Oh God of grace and mercy, we confess of our pride, disregard for Jesus Christ and for others. Please forgive us, and help us to be agents of drawing people to Your Son, and not one to repel them.

INTRODUCTION

Many in our society are ravaged by sickness and disease. Most of the time we respond to by resorting to natural means. There is nothing wrong with this and we should be encouraged to seek medical care and attention. Whether attacked by such illnesses personally or our significant others, people tend to become desperate when traditional remedies or methods fail to effect healing and renewed health. Desperation was obviously the chief motivating factor for the Roman centurion, who subordinated himself to Jesus' authority and healing powers as he reached out to elders of the Jewish community and Jesus to pursue non-traditional healing for his beloved servant.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· KNOWN the story of the centurion's servant;

· EXPERIENCE strong faith for deliverance for illness, like the centurion; and

· COMMIT to regularly visiting the sick to pray with them.

THE LESSON

1. THE CENTURIONS REQUEST — LUKE 7:1-5

The “elders of the Jews” were willing to speak to Jesus on behalf of the centurion, what should be our attitude in interceding for others in prayer? Read James 5:15-16; Philippians 2:3-4.

Always remember that God never leaves us, and God also uses other people to help us. Can God use you?

2. THE FAITH OF THE CENTURION — LUKE 7: 6-8

a. How do you react to the centurion’s message in verses 6-7, and what can we learn about God from his faith?

In this story, the centurion understood Jesus’ authority. How should Jesus’s authority apply to our daily lives as followers of Christ?

The reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is indisputable. Accept Him today as your Lord and Saviour.

3. THE SERVANT’S MIRACULOUS HEALING — LUKE 7: 9-10

God has the power to heal us of any sickness or disease. Have you or anyone you know ever experienced healing as a result of faith in God?

When Jesus gives His word, you can be sure He will keep His promise!

THE CONCLUSION: As Jesus travelled to the house of a centurion to heal his servant, the centurion told Jesus to heal his servant with a word, because he was unworthy for Jesus to enter his house. Yet, the elders of the Jewish people thought he was worthy and earnestly pleaded for Jesus to help this centurion and his servant because this centurion loved their people and had built their synagogue. In class discussion, what have we done to make us worthy to invite Jesus into our house or into our hearts? No matter how good we (or others) may think we are, none of us are worthy to have Jesus in our house or heart. Jesus shows His grace, love, and mercy to us when we humbly ask Jesus into our home and heart and He enters in. When we repent of our sins and trust in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, He will come into our hearts and make us a clean dwelling where He can remain with us forever. He will fill us with the Holy Spirit, Who will empower and guide us to follow and serve Him.

PRAYER: Dear God, help us to always put our trust in You and in Your ability to do what You say You will do. Let us remember that nothing takes You by surprise because You know all things and are in all places.

INTRODUCTION

Satan knows lots of things. He knows what people do (Job 1:6, 7), he knows the Scriptures (Matthew 4:3-6), and he knows how to persuade (1 Chronicles 21:1). But the ability to know everything (that is, being omniscient) is an attribute of God, not of Satan (or of any other created being for that matter). Satan was able to persuade Judas to betray Jesus (Luke 22:3, 4; John 13:2, 27), which resulted in Jesus’ crucifixion and apparent defeat. But would Satan have gone ahead with his plan if he could have foreseen Jesus’ subsequent victory over death? Common sense tells us no.

Satan was not the only one unable to foresee Jesus’ victory through resurrection, although Jesus had predicted it (compare Luke 18:31-34; John 20:9). The women in our text today were not expecting Him to be alive, given their intentions to prepare His body properly. They went to do what should be done for the dead; they ended up being surprised by life.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· DESCRIBE the women’s experience at the tomb.
· EVALUATE the level of faith demonstrated by the women.
· SHARE the good news of Jesus’ resurrection with one person in the week ahead.

THE LESSON

1. VISIT TO THE TOMB — MARK 16:1-5

a. The grief-stricken women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body as a sign of love, devotion, and respect. How can we use various grief moments to point unbelievers to Christ?

b. In what ways have you experienced God’s power and presence through the uncertainties that accompanied the loss of a loved one?

Always depend on God for solution whenever you are confronted with challenges instead of feeling helpless.

2. THE REALITY OF HIS RESURRECTION — MARK 16: 6-8

a. When was a time that belief in resurrection was especially helpful? How did things turn out?

b. What part does fear play in a Christian’s witness for Christ? How can we do better?

The reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is indisputable. Accept Him today as your Lord and Saviour.

THE CONCLUSION: The reality of death confronts all, and we make preparations for it. We help friends and family members in funeral planning. We purchase cemetery plots. We acknowledge our own forthcoming deaths by writing wills. But the best preparation is to let our thoughts dwell on the life that is to follow: resurrection life.

The women on that first Lord’s Day ran in fear from the empty tomb; our task today is to run in joy with the message of the empty tomb. May we ever proclaim Christ’s victory over His death; may we never lose sight of the fact that His victory is ours as well—for eternity.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for purchasing for us resurrection life, eternal life! Although we live in a fallen world that lies under the sentence of death, may we ever remember that Christ has conquered death for us to live forever with Him. Empower us daily to walk joyfully in the light and power of His victory.

STRUGGLING FAITH

INTRODUCTION

On the way to mount olives, Jesus made a declaration concerning his impending arrest. He predicted Peter’s denial and that of the other disciples. Peter in a swift reaction was so emphatic about his devotion to Jesus even if it means death! He later discovered the frailty of human strength and self-confidence after the words of Jesus came to pass.

Just like Peter and other disciples some Christians today affirm that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ but such claims of loyalty are meaningful only when it is tested in the crucible of persecution. Victory over temptation is not won by self-confidence or any human resolve (2 Samuel 2:9) rather we should rely on God to carry us through the journey of Faith.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· EVALUATE Peter’s denial of Jesus and how it relates to believers today.

· IDENTIFY the areas where he or she is struggling to uphold the Christian faith and ask God for help.

· GENUINELY repent when he or she fall short of God’s expectations.

Even if you fail in the days of adversity, instead of wallowing in self-pity and regret, let’s take a clue from peter who acknowledge his situation; he broke down, repented and continue to fight the good fight of faith.

PRAYER: Father, we acknowledge that by our own strength we cannot prevail, we ask for grace through Jesus Christ to stand firm in faith, no matter the circumstances.

INTRODUCTION

A boy was wrongly accused of robbery. Consequently, he was arrested and put in detention for several weeks. The boy was so overwhelmed with sorrow that he could not pray; however, his mother did not relent in praying for him. The community of faith also joined his mother in asking for God’s intervention and vindication. Soon, the case was charged to court and the boy was discharged and acquitted. In his testimony, he said, “I knew that the brethren were praying for me because I could no longer pray.” Similarly, when Paul and Silas were put in prison, the church continued to pray until God’s deliverance came (Acts 12:5).

James wraps up his letter by discussing the necessity of timely prayer. He has lessons for us on both the purpose of prayer and the power of prayer. This is the focus of this week’s lesson.

It is also realized that while there may need to be reconciliation between individuals on matters of sin (Mathew 5:23-24; 6:12, 14), forgiveness in the ultimate sense must come from God (see Psalm 32:5; 1 John 1:9). Therefore no church member, elder or otherwise, can bestow forgiveness on God’s behalf. Rather, those who hear a confession of sins serve as facilitators to get those sins out of the hidden life of the suffering person so he or she can be eligible to claim the promise of forgiveness (Proverbs 28:13). In any case, those who hear confessions of sins should be persons of discretion. People that will not allow details to leak out as juicy gossip.

b. How would you counsel a person who thinks that his or her prayers go unanswered because of personal failure to be “righteous enough”?

Consider a different way of thinking about prayer: not as a power we tap, but as a privilege we exercise. It is not that prayer works, but that God works through prayer. God actively listens to the prayers of his people to bring needed healing of the body, of the soul, and of the community.

Prayer requires an active role from us. We pray about our own needs and those of others. Prayers are not magical words that activate a cosmic force for our benefit. Rather, they are personal entreaties to God, our Lord and Master who hears and answers in accordance with his will.

PRAYER: Lord God, may we take our eyes off of ourselves and turn them to you when we pray. Be powerful in our lives to bring the healing we need. We pray with faith, believing you both hear and care.

INTRODUCTION

Central to the message of Hebrews is the fact that while the Jewish system was good for its intended purposes, it had to be superseded by the new, Christian system, which was far superior in every way. But what about the Jewish priesthood? Didn’t priests, especially the high priest, perform vital functions? There had been high priests for centuries and centuries, all the way back to Aaron, the brother of Moses. How were the functions of this priesthood to be covered in the new system? The author of Hebrews provided the answer.

LESSON AIMS: To help each member of the class to:

· Tell how Aaron and Melchizedek are significant to Jesus’ role of high priest.

· Explain the need for Jesus to be “a great high priest.”

· Praise God for giving us the perfect intercessor.

THE LESSON

1. ENCOURAGEMENT TO BE FIRM IN THE FAITH – Hebrews 4:14-16

a. What are those things that tend to rob us of boldness in our prayer life? How can we overcome them?

The shedding of Jesus’ blood has provided for us an opportunity to approach God’s throne to obtain mercy.

We have direct access to the Father through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

a. How do we approach God boldly in prayer (v. 16) yet also with godly fear?

b. How has suffering resulted in your spiritual growth? Are your “lessons learned” teachable to others? Why, or why not?

Jesus’ obedience qualified Him as our perfect High Priest – please read Philippians 2:8-11.

THE CONCLUSION

Rugged individualism is not the Christian way when it comes to spiritual matters. We all need someone to listen to us and to pray for us. This is partly why a specialized category of priests is valued in some branches of Christianity. But in the New Testament era we do not need this kind of priest to make intercession. We are all priests (1 Peter 2:9), and we all can pray for each other—something Paul asked his readers to do for him (see Ephesians 6:19). Even so, we ultimately and always rely on Jesus, our faithful and eternal high priest, to intercede for us at the very throne of God.

PRAYER: Father, thank you for sending your Son to serve as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, to be the perfect and eternal high priest on our behalf. As we look to him, may we never be tempted to go back to old ways.

The topic that dominates the first half of the book of Nehemiah is the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls and gates. That task was completed in 445 bc, and it was an exceptional accomplishment. Nehemiah 12 (today’s text) takes us to the dedication ceremony of those rebuilt walls.

Explain how the celebration and worship in the text can be a model for a proper celebration of any ministry task successfully completed.

The ancient Hebrews knew how to celebrate! Today, we have more reason to do so, since Jesus has been raised from the dead and is now reigning at God’s right hand. The Jews of Nehemiah’s day celebrated a rebuilt wall; we can celebrate the fact that Jesus tore down a wall, “the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14-16).

We should look for ways to celebrate in Christ. New buildings can be dedicated, milestones acknowledged, and teachers honored. Earthly celebrations in Christ can spur us to greater tasks of faith as we look forward to the great celebration by God of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2, 9). That celebration will never end.

PRAYER POINT: May the Holy Spirit inspire us to great tasks of faith that call for great rejoicing when completed.

DISCIPLING THROUGH SUNDAY SCHOOL THE JESUS WAY

DISCIPLING THROUGH SUNDAY SCHOOL THE JESUS WAY

Mark 6:30 (NIV):

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

Earlier, Jesus had sent out the Twelve "two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits" (Mark 6:7, NIV). We can see here that Jesus had a four step process for discipleship:

1. INSTRUCTING: Jesus instructed them.

2. SENDING: He sent them out to practice what was taught.

3. APPLYING: They applied what was taught.

4. REPORTING: They "gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught."

These are simple but effective steps for transformational discipleship through Sunday School. In this four-part series, I will set these steps in the context of the youth or adult Sunday School class.

INSTRUCTING. Revolutionary Sunday School is more than teaching. It is more than a cognitive dump. I like the word instructing so much more. It is the judge "instructing" the jury so they know how to deliberate. It is a math teacher "instructing" so the pupils know how to multiply fractions. In the case of Sunday School, instructing is helping disciples know something for a purpose. It is preparing "God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up" (Ephesians 4:12, NIV). It is teaching Sunday School members to obey everything Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:20a, NIV).

Instructing is teaching more than information. It is teaching for obedience. It is teaching for life-change. It is preparation for sending and applying. Here is an important step which is often missed in Sunday School teaching. We need to let our members know that we are instructing them to be sent out to apply the truth. Otherwise, they quickly forget the purpose of the instructing. It is not knowledge for knowledge's sake. We don't only want Christians who know more about the Bible. We want Christians who know more about how to be Jesus' disciples.

What does all this mean? It means we will have to adjust our teaching in order to help our class members take steps toward committing to obey. We lead them to understand the context so they can understand the message to the original hearers. Then we lead them to understand the importance and relevance of that truth to today and to them personally. Then we lead them to agree to take action. Individuals in the class encourage each other to keep their commitments to be obedient to the message, to carry out the truth. In other words, we make sure we save time during the session for class members to determine a personal response to meeting God in His Word. We save time for them to think through a plan for obedience. We save time for them to practice in class where applicable.

Sometimes we try to communicate too much. It is better to lead attenders to respond to God in obedience to one verse than to expose them to twelve verses to which there is no response. When your goal is transformation rather than information, it changes how you plan and teach. And it requires the teacher to encounter God and be transformed in advance of the session.

SENDING. Instruction is to enable the learner to use what is learned. Jesus taught his disciples (and us today) for a purpose. He prepared them to carry out the work. He prepared them to be sent out. Sending gives purpose, meaning, and direction to the instructing. Consider this statement, "If I am not going to use what I learn, then I don't have to remember it."

Sending raises retention, increases attention, and leads to application questions. When you know you are going to have to use what was learned, you do what it takes to learn it.

When sending has not been practiced, much less attention is given to instruction. In order to move toward sending, it is important to help learners understand that you are serious and to begin simply. It is also important for the first experiences to be chosen to build confidence and result in success at application.

The lesson might be about the Good Samaritan. How can we help learners grasp the truth of the lesson, to be a neighbour to the man attacked by robbers? In Luke 10:37, Jesus said to the expert in the law, "Go and do likewise." The story, the truth was intended to be practiced. Jesus sent him out to do it. How could learners in your class be led to apply the truth in the daily walk of their lives? Where could they be sent to? How could you lead them to envision places for sending and applying the truth? Helping learners narrow down options about places to apply the truth can help them get started. That's why sending cannot be skipped.

APPLYING. Instructing enables attenders to use what is learned. Sending raises retention, increases attention, and leads to application questions because learners know they're being sent to use what was learned.

Applying is what learners were "instructed" to do. It is what they were "sent" to accomplish. It is the goal of what was learned: to put the learning into practice. It is to put into effect what was learned about everything Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:20a, NIV). It is setting it into the context of today, of my life and your life. In other words, it is living out the truth.

Knowing that learners are going to be asked to live out the truth, they are led (1) to examine (during instructing) the original context and message, (2) to seek to understand its impact and meaning for them, (3) to own and commit to obey, and (4) to seek how He desires them to respond. Then they are sent to do it. Applying is doing the truth.

In applying, transformation into His disciples continues. It is obeying His commands out of our love for Him (John 15:10). It is feeding His sheep in response to Jesus asking if we love Him (John 21:17). In short, it is doing what Jesus' life and words "instruct" us to do.

Many Sunday School lessons contain these three parts: motivation, examination, and application. Motivation is capturing the attention and interest of learners. Examination is looking at the passage in context for understanding. Application is recognizing the impact of the truth on my life and committing to respond in obedience. But application in class is not enough. Action is needed. Keeping the commitment is needed. Mind, heart, and life-change are needed.

How can Sunday School help disciples grow? Hold attenders accountable to keep their commitments by asking them to report on what they did. Teach a lesson. Allow time for attenders to wrestle with the truth and apply it to their lives. Ask them to seek God's leadership for a plan for practicing the truth. Lead them prayerfully to commit to do it. Help learners understand that change happens as they are sent and apply the truth. Then let them know you will ask how they did next week.

The simple action of telling them you will ask is motivational. They will take the "assignment" and personal responsibility more seriously. But progress will crumble immediately if you don't follow through in calling for a report. Reports don't have to be long, but they are needed. They can be called for intermittently, but they are needed regularly at first while learners are adjusting to this new expectation.

Sending, applying, and reporting add depth and impact to teaching. They change teaching to instructing. They take more time. But the rewards are high. God's Word becomes a light to the path. It is a roadmap for life. It leads to fruitfulness and blessing.

How are you doing with these steps? Where is your discipling of others strong? Where does it need to be reinforced? What can you do to lead your attenders to report about what happened when they applied the lesson during the week? How can you begin calling for reports in order to help attenders know you are serious about their growth? Instruct. Send. Apply. Report. Be revolutionary!

INTRODUCTION

Martyrdom is more common today than ever. One study claims that some 70 million Christians have died for their faith since the first century AD, and that about two-thirds of these were killed in the twentieth century alone. Christians who live in the northern part of Nigeria where we have religious extremists face daily the threat of persecution. For many believers, confessing Christ comes with serious consequences. This should cause us to ask whether we too would be willing to suffer for our faith.

A. STEPHEN’S SPEECH - Acts 7:51-53

CONCLUSION

Stephen doubtless realized the dangers inherent in preaching Christ, knowing that he was choosing a path of suffering. His suffering was not in vain. His death resulted in the spread of the gospel. Stephen’s sense of a higher cause empowered him to act against self-interest. As a result, he is our model of courage in the face of opposition.

PRAYER

Father, we are thankful for the example of Stephen, who was willing to risk everything to serve you. Grant us the strength to follow his example, even when the outcome seems dangerous or uncertain. Help us to be faithful always to our Lord and Saviour, in whose name we pray; amen.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever been in an earthquake? It can be terrifying; our confidence in the idea of “solid ground” may be, well, shaken. Seemingly well-constructed buildings may be damaged beyond repair. Earthquakes can change our reality.

We find evidence of earthquakes throughout recorded history. The prophet Amos, for example, dates his book as having taken place two years before “the earthquake” (Amos 1:1; compare Zechariah 14:5). Which earthquake was this? We don’t know for sure, but it was such a mighty event in the day of Amos that he could simply call it “the earthquake.” Everyone knew what he was talking about at the time.

People in ancient times understood earthquakes as being under divine control. Some religions even had an earthquake god. The prophet Isaiah pictured a visitation of the Lord God of Israel as coming with earthquakes (Isaiah 29:6). Even today, some people interpret earthquake disasters as signs of God’s wrath.

If earthquakes are dramatic evidences of God’s power, how should we understand a complete lack of temblors? In other words, how should we understand a situation where people are infallibly protected from earthquake harm? Only God can create such a situation. This is envisaged by the author of Hebrews in today’s lesson.

A. MOUNTAIN OF TERROR – Hebrews 12:18-21

CONCLUSION

The church I worship and serve may have people from many different tribes attending on any given weekend. Every Sunday, in most parts of the world, people gather to worship God. Despite cultural, ethnic, and language differences, we are united as we worship the same God, the God of the Bible. We may carry different earthly passports, but we are citizens of Heaven (Philippians 3:20). We are united in Christ, our common Saviour, Lord, and King.

The church, as imperfect as it may seem in this age, is the congregation of those gathered to Mount Zion, the fellowship of those who have been saved through faith in Christ. Our heavenly citizenship has already begun.

PRAYER

We love your kingdom, Lord. May we take comfort in our citizenship in your holy city, the fellowship of the saved in Christ. May our great reverence for you never be diminished, but grow stronger as we worship you in spirit and truth. We pray these things in the name of Jesus; amen.

LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each student will be able to:

1. Summarize the parental model and the athlete model of discipline.

2. Explain why discipline is important to the Christian life.

3. Write a prayer of thanks for God’s discipline.

INTRODUCTION

Children both need and resist discipline. Some among us know of times when misbehaving children are disciplined quite harshly. When this is combined with parental rage or drunkenness, the result can be tragic. A small child might be brutalized by a parent, suffering permanent injury or even death as a result.

This has led some to propose that corporal punishment be rejected altogether. So the pendulum swings the other way—some say too far, with the result being inadequate or nonexistent discipline. This seems to be the case for children where parental attempts at discipline is only verbal in nature. We witness young children who have long since learned to ignore their parents’ words. As a result, the children do as they please.

We are greatly comforted by the idea that God is our Father (see Matthew 6:9). We are encouraged to believe that our heavenly Father is our protector and provider. We are not always as keen on the idea that our heavenly Father should be our discipliner and corrector. We are always ready to receive blessings from God, but not as eager to receive corrective discipline. This week’s lesson looks at a key passage of Scripture for understanding that we should both expect and humbly receive discipline from our Father in Heaven.

A. ENDURE THE RACE – Hebrews 12:1-3

1. Apart from things that Scripture spells out as sin, what are some real and potential hindrances to our Christian “run”? How do we address these? CONCLUSION

General George S. Patton (1885-1945) was an excellent athlete in his college days, competing in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics pentathlon event. The physical training of his youth did more than build up Patton’s body. It also instilled great discipline in his life. Part of Patton’s success as an army commander in World War II was based on the strict, even harsh discipline he demanded of his troops. Patton summarized his view of discipline when he said, “You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.”

Any athlete who aspires to run a marathon understands that discipline is required. No one is able simply to get up off the couch and run 26.2 miles without preparation! Those who are preparing for their first marathon begin with much shorter distances to build up endurance and muscle tone. This requires mental discipline, as Patton well knew. When the alarm clock rings, the body wants to roll over and sleep the extra hour that has been set aside for a morning run. Discipline, at its heart, is a spiritual and mental matter.

When we become Christians, we begin the race of faith immediately. We are in training and running the race at the same time. We may run slowly at first. We may falter because of sin. This is not the kind of race, however, where we are trying to beat the others who are running alongside us. Our only objective is to finish.

As we run, remembering three things will help defeat discouragement. First, we are not blazing a new trail. The pathway of faithful living has already been marked by Jesus; this racecourse has been followed by millions of believers since. Second, we are not alone in this race. God is with us, even disciplining us along the way, so that we will grow in faith and endurance. We are running in the fellowship of the church, brothers and sisters in the faith who are following the same trail. Third, we have a great goal set before us, a prize at the finish line. That prize is to be with Christ forever.

PRAYER

God our Father, as we discipline ourselves for the race, may we accept your discipline as children who love and respect you. We pray this in the name of Jesus, the one who finished his task with perfect faithfulness; amen.
