Urban Farmer

I rightfully give myself the label of urban farmer. This year we have added only food producing shrubs and vines and have removed other decorative plants.

We planted two blueberries and have been picking enough to snack out in the yard but yesterday we picked enough to add to a fruit salad.

Raspberries have been ripening daily. I have to admit I am selfish and often eat what I pick right there in the driveway as that is where this vine is planted.

I now plot and plan much more carefully. Saving seeds and only buying what I need to replace each year.

Here's a frugal gardening tip, buy the small six packs of the seedlings because you often get twelve plants instead of six. See how two are planted next to one another? I just carefully separate the roots and divide.

Here is one thing I will never grow again. Lettuce here in my garden looks great but tastes awful. Grown in winter, spring, no matter, shade or sun. It is bitter. May be my soil but I will just buy my lettuce. My gardener friend Patty agrees and lives not far. We just don't have the conditions for lettuce here.

Even these girls won't touch the stuff.

I Love the U.S.A. but the Gov't? Not so Much

We are putting some good old red, white and blue out there for Memorial weekend. But as for this week, and the things that have occurred in Washington, I am totally convinced there are no ethics whatsoever in our government leaders.

When you can work for a federal agency, paid for by my hard earned tax dollars, get called before congress and claim you are innocent but refuse to answer questions, we are surely living in a time of corruption. I understand you can take the 5th, but as I was jumping up and down in frustration, why weren't those politicians who were doing the questioning? Why were none of them outraged. One did try to suggest they ask the questions and let her plead the 5th for each one but big deal.

When you all work for the government you have endless deep pockets, when it is not your business or job on the line you loose a passion for what is right. If you want more money you just stick it to the tax payer for more. I am proud to say we have never cheated on our taxes. I always wanted to sleep at night and we have painfully paid our fair share for 24 years. If I had been on that panel they would have had to force me to shut up as I would have been yelling out that, "You work for the people and you owe them some answers!!"

Why have these ridiculous congressional hearings when no one ever says anything? I would kiss the ring of the politician that would at least suggest that we compel these folks to answer. How can we ever trust a government that just rolls over as complete corruption reigns in Washington? I think we all know the answer to that question.

Teacher Appreciation School Supply Cake

We just celebrated teacher appreciation week at my daughter's preschool. I was blown away by this teacher appreciation school supply cake one of the moms made. I had to share with you all cause what a great idea.

Inside the squares were boxes of tissues, disinfectant wipes, craft supplies you name it. From the dollar stores you could easily make one of these and wow your favorite teacher.

I on the other hand being creatively challenged chose flowers and a Target gift card.

How can we not think of those teachers and students and others affected by yesterday's tornadoes in Oklahoma? Just so sad and they are in my prayers and thoughts.

Chicken Coop Fairy Garden in the Making

I have been wanting to create a chicken coop fairy garden. Lo and behold my favorite little shop had just the perfect thing.

It had to come home with me and now it sits awaiting its place in the garden.

Loved the old time wash tubs.

I think I will plant it in a large pot with brilliant green Scotch moss but what I need most are some little chickens. Any ideas where to order some?

I am checking in to say hi quickly. Our life here is so busy this week that I have not had time to hardly turn on the computer. One highlight was my baby's 5th birthday. Because her daddy was out of town working, I wanted to do something fun so big sis and I took her to Build A Bear Workshop. She had never been and she thought it was wonderful.

We also headed to Rain Forest Cafe for a birthday dinner which she at first loved but if you have ever been there you know at different times a thunder storm starts and the animals come alive. It scared the you know what out of the kid. Her eyes were huge. She then spent the rest of the time with her ears covered. I asked if she wanted to leave but she said no.

Poor kid. Mom tortured her for her birthday. She managed to eat and said it was great when we left but that it was too loud. I totally get it. I hate loud noises too.

Today we celebrate with family and friends and tomorrow is jam packed as well. Too busy for me but this is how May is every year. There is a bike with pretty ribbon hiding in the garage for someone's present. Can't wait to see her face.

I laughed as hubby was hiding in the trailer putting it together. Who would have thought at 45 he would be still doing these things. Life is full of surprises.

The funny thing will be if we can keep up running down the street with her when the training wheels come off.

How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Glass and Chrome Faucets

Okay, I promised to share this tip. Hard water stains are hard to remove from shower doors, windows and kitchen and bath faucets. Here is how I remove hard water deposits in my home. Take white vinegar and a scrubber sponge. For shower doors and faucets I soak the scrubber side good and start scrubbing. This works very well for me. I then just rinse with a damp cloth and dry.

If stains are really hard you may have to work at it. Now if the surface is flat like my kitchen faucet here is what I do. Soak the sponge side of the scrubber really well with the vinegar and set it on the flat surface of the chrome. Let sit for at least 15 minutes and repeat again if the hard water deposits are really bad. Flip over the sponge and scrub with the scrubber side.
Look at my faucet I did today. 12 years old and not any deposits. I do have to scrub up around the handle too to get those off but I sometimes soak a wash cloth with vinegar and wrap around to work on those hard water deposits.

To clean outdoor windows and remove hard water stains I do it a little different. I take a bowl and add 1 cup of vinegar, a small squirt of dish soap and some hot water. Using the same scrubber side of the sponge I work at the hard water deposits and then use the sponge side to scrub the whole window and squeegee them dry. If you have stubborn water stains then soak that scrubber with straight vinegar and scrub really well.

I do have one window where a sprinkler hits and the deposits are stubborn. I am going to try a tip one of my husband's fellow lineman told me and I will report if it works as well as he claims.

Boho Farm Garden Tour

When fellow blogger friend Patty from Lemon Lane Cottage and I decided to take a road trip all the way to AZ to go on a garden tour, one of the main reasons we decided to go was because of another blogger's home. Boho Farm and Home is a gorgeous blog and we thought hey lets go see her garden. It was a long way to go let me tell you but it was fun and her garden was a feast for the eyes.

Below you will see some great photos from Patty's camera and some from my phone as I left my camera battery charging in the wall of our hotel. Not smart.

The front yard is very shady and cool but she has some fruit trees and veggies mixed in her planters.

She has lots of vignettes and beautiful structure in her garden.

Artichokes thrive in her garden.

Here we are entering into her back garden.

Her use of chartreuse green and black is so pretty. I loved it.

Her potting area was along the side of her house. Love the fun striped awning. So pretty.

Her back garden is broken into two areas. This flanks her patio. Such a charming cottage type garden.

Tomorrow I will share the rest of the pics with you of this gorgeous garden and show you her chicken coop.

A Garden Tour

Happy Mother's Day!! I have been gone. My friend Patty and I went on a road trip. We drove six hours to go to a garden tour and have a little get away and I got back last night, tired and happy to see my family.
The tour was delightful and I have a few pics from my phone. Will share much much more you have to see later this week.

We saw many chicken coops and ways of growing veggies in city gardens. Loved this fresh eggs sign.

I loved these rusty hens in the wagon. I need to find me some. We were so inspired by a couple of the gardens.

I loved this house. Lots of white and rustic decor. This was a cozy corner of their sun room.

A New Venture...

You all know my heart is in the home but it is also mostly in the garden these days tending my chickens, growing as much as I can on what I call my "city farm." I have been asked to join a weekly blog hop and I am so thrilled to be taking part in this.

I have been joining this weekly blog hop for a while now. It is how I have connected with other chicken folk and urban gardeners as well as homesteaders but it is so much more than that. Vintage Sundae Bar

One of the girls just had a birthday and she is not a cake person. This year she wanted a sundae bar.

I pulled out the old fountain glasses from a restaurant my folks owned before I was even born.
I filled the glasses with her favorite candies. I also used a vintage tray and hobnail dish. We had the typical toppings as well but this was a hit with the kids and adults. It is always fun to make your own dessert.

Welcome to My Front Porch

Welcome to my home and my front porch. Nothing fancy, just a typical California ranch entry way. I love to decorate it for all the seasons.

When we moved in and painted the house, I knew I wanted a red front door. The door was actually white with a real dated blue and white glass. We found a piece of salvage leaded glass and had it put in.

The little swing on our porch was hung by my husband's grandfather in 1958. We cherish it and repair it as needed but it is the perfect size for this spot. I love to watch my kids outside or enjoy a cool drink in the evenings just swingin' away.

All the decor on the porch comes from things we have collected over the years. The wood boxes were unearthed from the garage. A hint of the egg laying chickens outback greets you when you arrive.

I love watering cans and flags. I try to work them in everywhere.

We actually have changes in store for the porch. My brother, a brick mason, is going to brick it over and enlarge it a bit. The old concrete is showing its age and I am excited to spruce it up.

When May comes around, the flags come back out for the summer. Memorial day to Labor day and the red white and blue is flying proudly at our home.

Sunny Simple Sunday Blog Link Party

Last night we spent the evening at Jazz Under the Stars. My daughter is in her high school jazz band and they played while friends and family enjoyed a lovely evening and a silent auction. It was so nice. Warm and breezy and while I was outbid on all the items I bid on, we did win two raffles so we did well. My daughter is at the keyboard.

Now begins a crammed weekend ending with one of my girl's 19th birthday BBQ tomorrow here. We are so proud of our girl. We just found out she was chosen for a summer internship (paid!!!) working on some anti-hacking research. She is a computer science major. This mom is feeling very proud and last night I said to them no arguing, I am enjoying this moment,let me have it. Life is good.

Organizing Household Binders and a Party Basket

If you know me at all you know you know I am always studying organization and then implementing it into my life if I think it will work for me. Some things work, some things don't.

I have been wanting a very detailed home binder system for a while and have given myself actual "office hours" each week to work on this project. I decided to break every category that involves paper work into binders.

This week I made labels and got the binders together. I am working on adding printables for the info we need to keep. Let me just say that opposed to having to pull a file to see when a car last had brakes done, I loved just pulling the file and flipping to that car to see the repair work we had done. It is time consuming to get it all together but I think I have finally found a system that works for my UNORGANIZED brain.

Here is another tip all my own. We have a lot of birthdays, parties, gatherings here and I like to pick things up over the weeks proceeding and keeping it together for party organization. Instead of having those items tucked here and there I now have what I call the "party basket." This measures about 12x14 inches and I keep it in the service porch.

We are having a Sundae bar for my daughter's birthday this weekend so as I have picked up toppings, candles, whatever, I drop it in the basket that I keep in the service porch/pantry. The day of the party I just pull the basket out.

Clean Your Stove Burners and Grates

See what is cooking. Yep it is my stove burner grates out in the sun. You can see the post on the easy way to get the black caked on stuff off here.

I stumbled upon an easier way to get the built up gunk off of your burners by accident. One day I had put a bunch of cleanser on my stove burners with some water and then had to leave the house. When I got home the cleanser and water had ate off most all of the burned on stuff. I light scrubbing removed the rest.
So cover with cleanser, enough water to liquefy and let sit for a couple of hours.

Look at how clean that stove burner is now.

Six Weeks

Thought you might like an update on Cream Puff and Miss T. They are now six weeks old.

Last night we let them loose for a little roam in the backyard. They are such companion animals. If they loose sight of one another they squawk loudly. What do you think of Miss T's mohawk? Quite impressive isn't it?

They are now full time without a heat light in the old coop. It is safer for them as it is fully enclosed. I worry about cats getting them while they are still small.

Rocky is very much establishing the pecking order and gives them a peck every once in a while.

My big girls love checking out their digs and what these new interlopers are up to.

Raising chicks this year has been so much easier. I really fussed too much last year. First time mom and all.

A New Barbecue But First Working Hard

My hubby is a wonderful grill master. He only uses briquettes and we have been in need of a new barbecue. Our old one is almost 20 years old and was getting a bit shaky.

We finally found one he liked at a good price at Lowes. He got up early to season the grill and get it ready for last night.

I made a creamy dill pasta salad and lots of sides.

We barbecued chicken legs, Q's request, and a couple of steaks, along with corn and bread.

You can see how we prepare the most moist barbecue chicken here.

So let's just say before we enjoyed our Sunday, we worked our tushes off on Saturday.

The coop was in need of some spring cleaning and we needed to make some minor changes.

First we went to Lowes and I told hubby that this should be it now, the coop is done and he said, "I sure am sick of buying stuff for these chickens." OOOOhhhhh. I was told.

Having chickens is something I love. It is work and I am lucky he indulges me. I think once you get the coop all set you are pretty set except for maintenance.

Originally we just put the coop on the dirt and it needed to be set up on bricks so the whole coop was lifted out and while hubby cleaned and set the bricks I washed, sanded and stained the coop. I should have done it when we first got it but I didn't. It looks so nice.

It was a good weekend. Full of what I like doing. Working in the yard and grilling at home. What did you do this weekend? Did you fire up the grill?

Sunny Simple Sunday Link Party

Hello! Sitting down for a quick break to get the party started. We have been working hard today. We moved the coop to do a spring cleaning and I gave it a couple coats of stain and some bricks to set it on now so it stays nice and above any rain water.

I have also been cleaning windows. Look at the reflection. I will do a post this week sharing how a friend of mine gave me a tip to remove hard water spots from windows. Wish I had known this all these years.

I have a lovely new sponsor to the blog and I am so excited about it. All of us women in the house have long hair and often have to clip it up or back with bands or those ugly plastic clips. I was so excited to see an alternative that is not only functional but so gorgeous.
