“Prototypes also provide extremely valuable insight into transitions between state and more dynamic interactions. Interactivity is about behavior—how a product or artifact changes over time in response to user input and events in the world. While the traditional model of software and web interactivity typically replaces one application state by another—as in a slide show, the iPhone, Ajax, and other contemporary user interface (UI) frameworks—the transitions can be more animated and full of motion. The days of replacing one screen with another are over—and certain interface elements may grow, change, and move. Getting these behaviors just right makes prototyping especially critical to the design process.”
