After negotiation and communication by g-mail, my guest decided to trip Jakarta - Surabaya - Bromo - Ijen, then homeflight to Jakarta from Surabaya Airport

My tourist name is Mr Boon WK, from Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia. Since February 2010, he worked in Jakarta - Indonesia, in Insurance Company. He went from Jakarta on 28 May 2010 and the tour was began from 28th May to 30th May 2010

Herewith the Mr Boon's schedule with my tour service :

1st day : Surabaya - Probolinggo - Bromo (28 May 2010)
1. Pick up at Probolinggo bus station at 03.30 pm
2. Rest for 1 hour at Mahameru Travel as our pool to shared transport
3. Around Probolinggo city by motorcycle
4. Having pre-dinner at Bakso (meat ball) Pak Mantep
5. Visiting Probolinggo Harbour, enjoy the Sunset
6. Then to Pelabuhan Pelelangan Ikan (Fish Probolinggo Terminal)
7. Back to shared transport terminal
8. At 07.00 pm, leave Probolinggo by Shared Minibus to Bromo area
9. Check in Sion Hostel (with Superior Room)
10. Relax and sleep

2nd day : Bromo Sunrise Tour - Ijen Plateau area (29 May 2010)
1. Wake up at 03.00 am with morning call
2. Already to explore Bromo, first to Penanjakan Peak by Jeep 4WD (shared transport) to see amazing sunrise
3. Enjoy the sunrise and head forward to Bromo Crater
4. Explore Bromo Crater
5. Return to hotel, breakfast and check out
6. Driving down to Probolinggo
7. Continue to Ijen Plateau by private transport
8. Arrive Ijen area after 6 hours on car
9. Check in hotel, in Catimor Hotel and free program

3rd day : Ijen Plateau Tour - Probolinggo - Surabaya (30 May 2010)
1. Wake up at 05.00 am with morning call
2. Simple breakfast
3. Check out hotel
4. Continue to Paltuding, the last post before hiking to Ijen Plateau
5. Hiking up for 2 hours (3,1 km), enjoy the rim of Ijen Plateau and explore
6. Back to Paltuding
7. Having lunch in Bhayangkara Restaurant - Pasir Putih Beach, Bondowoso district
8. Ahead to Probolinggo and arrive after total 6 hours on car
9. Arrive at Probolinggo bus station
10. My tour service is ended and Mr Boon returned to Surabaya Airport by bus at 03.00 pm

1st day :

2. Transfer you in to Bromo by our tourist car for 3 hours driving

2nd day :
Bromo - Sunrise Tour - Ijen
1. Wake up at 03.00 am
2. Pick you up at hotel at 03.30 am and we already to do the Bromo Sunrise Tour, by Jeep 4 Wheel Drive
3. Through the sea of sand, driving up to Penanjakan Peak to see the Amazing Sunrise, the trip is a hour
4. Afterwards back to the Jeep 4 WD and we visit to Bromo Crater
5. Driving down and after a hour arrive in the bottom of Bromo Crater
6. Walking up the upstairs and arrive at the rim of Bromo Crater after 30 minutes
7. After 1 hour, back to the Jeep 4 WD, return to the hotel to have breakfast, showering and loading your bags
8. Check out hotel at 10.30 am
9. Transfer you out to Ijen Plateau Area
10. The trip from Bromo to Ijen Plateau area need 6 hours (5 hours = real way, 1 hour = lunch program)
11. After 2 hours in trip, having lunch and rest in the local restaurant at Pasir Putih (White Sand) Beach
12. Continue and arrive at Ijen Plateau area, not direcly check in hotel, but visit "Blawan Waterfall"

3. Direction to Paltuding, the last post and parking area, the trip is 30 minutes
4. At Paltuding and start to trekking up to Ijen Plateau, the trip is 1,5 hours
5. Arrive in the rim of Ijen Plateau, enjoy here
6. Back to Paltuding and then continue to hotel
7. Having breakfast, showering and loading your bags
8. Check out hotel
9. Having lunch in the local restaurant on the route
10. Transfer you out to Surabaya International Airport or Ketapang Harbour Terminal (if you continue to Bali), and our tour is ended

Ijen Plateau (2) : Route to Ijen Crater area

We assume from Bromo and you leave there by standart tourist car or minibus due to usually the both is famous by tourist and being main purpose. Or otherwise, it's meant Ijen as first and then to Bromo

The route is as follow :

Through Bondowoso district
Probolinggo - Bondowoso = 137 km (3 hours)
Bondowoso - Gardu Atak = 12 km (30 minutes)
Gardu Atak - Kalisat = 43 km (60 minutes)
Kalisat - Blawan = 7 km (15 minutes)
Kalisat - Jampit = 14 km (30 minutes)
Kalisat - Paltuding = 14 km (30 minutes)
Paltuding - Ijen Crater = 3 km (trekking for 1,5 hours)

If you leave from east direction, i mean from Bali, you can do the trip from Banyuwangi, and the route is as follow :

Through Banyuwangi district
Banyuwangi - Licin (sub district) = 20 km (3o minutes)
Licin (sub district) - Paltuding = 30 km (1 hour)
Paltuding - Ijen Crater = 3 km (trekking for 1,5 hours)

Wonderful

That’s the first impression for everyone who saw the beautiful overlooking about the “Kawah Ijen” (Ijen Crater / Plateau). Kawah Ijen is as crater of Mt Ijen which Mt Ijen is one of the active volcanoes, located between Bondowoso (Klobang Subdistrict) and Banyuwangi (Licin Subdistrict), part of Alas Purwo National Park, one of national conservation area in East Java

The short description about Kawah Ijen :
Elevation = 2,386 m (edge) and 2,145 m (lake) from sea level
Type = Stratovolcano
Coordinat = 8°03,5' S dan 114°14,5' E
Eruption = 1817 ; 1917 ; 1936 ; 1950 ; 1952 ; 1993 ; 1994 ; 1999

This crater, surely will offer us a lot of matter. The crater with large around 5,466 hectares has volcano crater eksotism, beautiful and charming nature. The quiet lake that has tosca colour of water is look like an elegance to everyone who saw it. The best time to enjoy the crater scenery is at morning, when the yellow sunlight glows the yellow water with their volume almost 200 million cubic and temperature around 200 Celcius degree, and shines also the surrounding mountain like mount Merapi (Mt Merapi in East Java I mean), the sister of Mount Ijen

Ijen crater is the acid lake, one of biggest lake acid in the world. It has zero degree of acid, and the acid is enough to dissolve clothes and your finger on water. This crater is famous, not only for local tourist, but all the world.

The lake is covered by crater’s wall stone which the kind of stone material’s is built by “Solfatra” and “Lapili”. This stone materials was created by volcano eruption, making sediment with black colour, real black. You can walk up here with your family, specialy for mountain adventure lovers who always looking for a new adventure objects. It has supported by local government with any representative facilities such as road (I think we must repair the road in some area, not whole), camping ground, hotel or lodging house that provided in near by Kawah Ijen

After you arrive at around of Ijen area, tourist generally choose hotel for their overnight at Jampit or Blawan village. They both are nice area, quiet, fresh and around by coffee plantation, specialy your trip to reach the hotel. You can choose at Arabica and Catimor homestay (hostel), or if you prefer to stay with higher quality and service, please visit and overnight at Ijen Resort. As your information, the Arabica and Catimor homestay (hostel), coffee plantation, coffee factory, strawberry plantation, it’s all managed by Plantation Department of local government. Please enjoy at hotel and in next morning, you will start to walk up to Ijen Crater

All of vehicle must stop at “Paltuding”, the last post before we walk up to Ijen Crater, take entrance fee and start to reach the Ijen Crater. The trip is 2 hours, up and easy road. 2 hours is similar with 33 small post on the edge of street and each small post has distance more and last 100 metres. So, you walk up to Ijen crater from Paltuding 3,3 km, good for your health .....

As long as your time walking up to Ijen Crater from the start point, around after 30 minutes you walk up, in your right and left side, you can see another beautiful objects, they are “Savanah” and “Stepa forest” in the faraway, with wild grass that height around 1 meter. Large of this “Savanah” and “Stepa forest” are around 10,000 hectares and lied between mountain groups that has the high up to peak in 2000 meters. The mountain groups is lied from Banyuwangi to Bondowoso and in green scenery

Mt Ijen is not the only one between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, but the mountain group, such as Mt Kendeng, Mt Ringgih, Mt Merapi, Mt Ijen, Mt Papak, Mt Widodaren, Mt Pawenan, Mt Rante, Mt Jampit, Mt Raung, Mt Suket, Mt Kukusan, Mt Deleman, Mt Pendil, Mt Kenteng, Mt Panduan, Mt Anyar, Mt Gunung Lingker, This mountain groups will challenge us to also, climbing to the mountain group anywhere

The right month for us to climbing, recommend to do this around July – September although everyday we keep to handle visitors. Because, in July to September, we will find the edelweiss flower (everlasting flower), flower as mascot with easier during our climbing, at the slope of Mt Ijen and the mountain group, look like white colour in the faraway. …… (continue)

On Friday, Dec 18 2009, I have dealed with my connection in Hongkong which there was 2 person from Hongkong would like to visit to Indonesia. As agreement, i arrange their short tour during 2 days

They are : Mr Tam and Mr Kwan, both from Hongkong.
As schedule, they would be landing at Adi Sucipto International Airport - Jogjakarta on Dec 26 2009. Arrival at 08.45 am by Garuda Indonesia where 1 night before they overnight in Jakarta. About the tour was just in 2 days, Dec 26 - 27 2009. This is the peak season

We met them at least in 30 minutes after arrival time. Explain them that their tour will be held since today. The itinerary :
- Dec 26 2009 = Jogjakarta - Surabaya (Train Station) - Bromo (hotel)
- Dec 27 2009 = Bromo (hotel) - Penanjakan - Bromo (hotel) - Surabaya

On Dec 26 2009, in the avening (at 07.00 pm) we buy executive train ticket for return schedule in tomorrow to Jogjakarta, by Sancaka Train
Dinner in local restaurant in Pasuruan, we arrive in the hotel at Bromo area at 11.00 pm. We overnight at Yoschi's Guest House. Full booked but we have room due to do reservation 1 week ago and very good relationship between my company with hotel

Just 3 hours sleeping, at 03.00 wake up then together with them to see "Amazing Sunrise" at Penanjakan, the view point by Jeep 4 WD. The situation was very crowded, a lot of people there, dominant with domestic tourist, cause the school holiday. The percentage : 70% domestic & 30% foreign tourist.

Here, i can't shoot the objects by my digital camera, i didn't know why. And big unfortunately, all of my shoot result since Jogjakarta to Bromo, lost ....

Continue to Bromo crater, very busy with a lot of car on the way. After Bromo crater, return to Yoschi's Guest House. Loading their bag, showering, breakfast then we transfer out them to Surabaya Train Station (Gubeng Main Station). The train bring them to Jogjakarta to overnight there for 1 night. As their conversation, they would enjoy the sunrise at Borobudur Temple in next tomorrow. Then around the city, finally back to Adi Sucipto International Airport - Jogjakarta. I didn't know about the time and flight that return them to Hongkong

Therefore, apologize me if i can't present the photo results in this blog. I will buy the new one .....

Bromo (6) : The Tenggerese Culture (3)

Marriage

Marriage is the important thing in human being's life, due to is not only concern two person who love each other but also included two families and society. According to Tengger society, this's also followed by the soul of the ancient of the couple married. Before wedding party, there's "Nelasih" or pilgrimage and give "Tetamping" or "Sesaji" (present to the god)

Providing all matters concerns with this, sometimes it's called unreasonable, but in fact it's still done by all of people. The way to get married is the same as the other. There is such kind in "Ngadisari" (a small village in Bromo), Tengger that has 9 process in marriage, similar with other region, such as finding the spouse engaging and wedding party itself. Wedding party in Tengger is just for themselves (Endogami)

Eventhough, nowdays, there are Tengger people who marry with other person who comes from other city, but the members are a few. If girls comes from Tengger and a man doesn't, so the wedding party must follow Tengger custom and Hindusm culture. But if a man comes from Tengger and a woman doesn't (for example, she is moslem), the wedding party must follow the Moslem (Islamic) custom. Eventhough, they have married un-Tengger custom, they still become "Tengger" family or they call with "Sedulur"

Ingeneral, young man tries to get his spouse by himself and to decide to date of their marriage, it's depent on their day of birth (they call with "Weton"), similar with in Javanesse date custom. The next step is if hs parents agree, he and his parents must engage. The girls sit beside her parents and the man will say (in Javanesse language) as follow : "Kulo ngriki niki ngarepaken yugo sampeyan" (English = "I come here to get married with your daughter"). And the girl's parents will answer : "Yen bocahe gelem" (English = "If the girl agree with you"). The girl will be asked by her parents : "Apa siro gelem dikarepake si ......" (English = "Do you want to get married with ......"). Afterwards, she answers with : "Inggih" (English = "Yes, i do"). It's meant that the engagement is received. It's continued by discusing about the wedding party date. In engagement, there's no "Peningset" (a gift from man to woman which we just find in Javanesse married custom). Because according to the Tengger society, "Peningset" is the same with owe, not a gift

Oneday, before the wedding party begins, man's family come to his wife's family bringing rice and many other things. This's held in the girl family's house in the morning. The man sits on the right sight of talesman ("Dukun", leader in the village) and the girl's family is in the left side. In front of them, there are "Sesaji" (sacrifice) with 5 kind of them like 5 plates of white-red "Jenang" (cake), 1 plate of "Arang - arang Kambang", 7 plates of rice and eggs, "Pisang raja" (king banana), 7 plates of "Golong" rice and egg, some money. The talesman read the incanted with holding the right hand of woman's family and man's family. They are asked to follow what the talesman said

Sometimes, the marriage is canceled because :
They are still a relative
Example : they are still one "Canggah" (canggah is grandmother of grandmother)
Dadung Kepuntir
Example : A, B and C have each sons and also daughters. They are one Canggah. But A's sons marries b's daughter, B's son marries C's dauughter and C's son marries A's daughter, so a kind of this is not allowed
Papakan Wali
Example : A, B each of them have sons and daughters. A's son marries B's daughter. The second A's son marries the second B's daughter
Kesandung Watang or Kerubuhan Gunung
Example : If one of their family is died, so the wedding party had to canceled and return to first engagement process

If there’s something to cancel the wedding, such as Kesandung watang or Kerubuhan gunung, so the man and his parents come to wife family’s house to say : “Kulo ngriki niki nilar yogane sampeyan, sarehning wonten alangan, mbok de pejah …..”. In English is meant “I come here to leave your daughter, because my aunt died ……”. And the girl’s parent answer “Kebeneran siro wurungake sarehne mbokde siro ora ono …”. In English is meant “You are right to cancel it, because your aunt died …”

People who can be “Wali” (someone who agree the marriage) are father, grandfather and so on and uncle. If there’s no “Wali”, leader of the village can be “Wali” and called by “Wali Bumi”. This rule is not different from Islamic rule

Farming

Tengger people are good farmer. Men and women work together in the farming area. “Api – api” or “Begenan” is the way to welcome the guest, they present you to come to their kithen with dringking coffee and eating potatoes boil there. This is their tradition

Their kitchen is made of cement and tile and wood. Because of the situation is cool, so their brazier lways flame and a hot waterin the boiler. Trivet in the kitchen as also for sitng if there’s a guest. They speak and drink coffee. They make it by themselves, so it’s nicer. They also est potatoes. Speaking near the flame makes us warm

Native Tengger people do not want to leave their village, because they think that it’s enough to fulfil their life’s needs. They plant potatoes, cabbage, vegetables, and also corn for main food. In general, they have strong powerto walk faraway and bring an heavy thing

The characteristic of this people is wearing “Sarung”, wherever they go, men or women, because of cool, They do not want to get the knowledge from other city. Their faith with culture and religion, makes them pure and strong, not influenced by other life and culture

Funeral Ceremony

Besides these Wilujengan, Tengger society also celebrate Galungan Day, which is held since 1974. Nyepi, Ciwalatri, Saraswati, Pagerwesi, and Kuningan which are usually done by Hindu community in Bali, they are not celebrating them.

There is ceremony for funeral like Ngaben in Bali but Hindu Tengger people do not burn the dead body like in Bali. They just burn the doll that wear the cloth like human being. Then, it is burn after the dead body funeral.

After taking bath, it's is incanted by medicine man, the dead body is closed with 3 white cloth and then it's gone around with "Ancak" which is made by bamboo. The dead body is faced east. Afterward, they have to told "Masahi Ceremony". It is farewel party for people who died with his family and lead by "Dukun" (medicine man). "Entas - entas Ceremony" is done for 44 days later, or another day depent on family's ability.

This ceremony means for forgiving to "Sang Maha Agung" (god), so that the soul of the dead body can die peacefully. In this ceremony, people must make doll which is made of "Kenikir leaves" and "Janur Kuning" (coconut young leaves with yellow color), to describe the dead body. This doll is called by "Petra". Petra wears cloth of the dead body. A number of Petra is depends on the number of people who died.

"Dukun" (medicine man) reads "Mantra" (charms) for more than one hour with small genta in front of "Dukun" with many kids how down wear the cloth. They just wear white cloth, sex and number of children according to the sex and number of people who died. While "Dukun" reads the "Mantra" for about a half, he will be helped by others to cook rice with fire which is made of "Jarak tree". And then, the "Dukun" burns the children's hair and then make the white cloth as aviel.

"Dukun" only nites unites the movement of person who is sewing without yarn, it's continued by putting rice on head of children. It's done by "Dukun" directly. Then, taking duck and white children, eat rice on the children's head. "Wong Sepuh" (The old man) break the coconut in front of house. The last, is read the close incantation by "Dukun" and then "Petras" are undress and held by mothers to the other place that called by "Tempat Danyang". This place is ghost's home. Then, "Petras" is put by mothers with bring "Iber - Iber" (present) like chicken or duck. The animal must be life animal, not died animal. Afterward, Petras is burn.

The Petras burning in the died ceremony procession is the "Ngaben Ceremony" replacement

Bromo (4) : The Tenggerese Culture (1)

Explanation about Caka year in Bromo area :

Wilujengan Karo

It's done at 7th the second month, for the "atman" or the ancient soul and at "panglong 1" , there is "sodoran ceremony". Actually, Raya Karo (The Great "Karo") day is the most important day for Tenggerese. It's done in turn in every villages

When celebrating, there's a sacre dance and it's called by "sodoran". This dance is as a symbol of human beings movement to get the children. Sodoran ceremony is only done in the three villages, these are Ngadisari, Wonotoro and Jetak village. It's done every year and only held by three village in the Balai Desa (village office)

They are combined and dance together

Each village dances this ceremony and lead by village leader. He/she is called by "Ratu" (queen) in scare dance for respecting. to go to the ceremony place, the villagers group walk together with wearing dress uniforms of Tengger, they are head band (it's called by "Udeng"), shirt, and black boat, troussers, everything must be in black / dark color, shoes /sandal). Villagers dance with traditional music. Sodoran dance is held in turn and ended by the quenn dance and their guard. They dance with "gamelan music". Tenggerese count the date every month to 15th only, and the following 16th, 17th and 18th and soon by "Panglong Siji" by panglong siji (first panglong), panglong 2 up, panglong 3th and so on. Beginning from panglong 2 up to panglong 7 (17th to 22nd), the ceremony is continued at each house by making a little cone of boiled rice, all sorts of side - dishes, many kinds of flowers, cakes and food, coffee, cigarette, sirih - quid, king banana and etc. These are followed by "dukun" (medicine man) from a house to others to give charms ("mantra"). It's usually finishes for three days.

This ceremony then is continued by visiting their relative or neighbour. It will be ended at panglong 7 and before panglong 7, people must visit to grave or "nyadran". They give boresh-flower or callde by "tetamping / sesaji" at the grave. During Karo Day, who ever who came to Tengger must get, eat and drink (reception). If they reject, they are considered they did not respect the host. Because it also invites many families, so they have no eaten as much as they want. Because it will make them can not give food for the last guest.

Wilujengan Kapat

It's done at 4th in the fourth months for celebrating "sedulur papat limo pancer" (brotherhood), "momong jangkung or momong dusun" (person who keep the village) and "monco papating dusun" (the main direction of villages). It's held in "Balai Desa" (village office)

Wilujengan Kapitu

It's done at 1st in the seventh months. Holding this, people must do "patigeni fasting" where they do not be allowed to eat and sleep for one day, stay all day in the room (not going anywhere) and continued by "puasa mutih" (white fasting). For food, they just eat rice and water for one month and ended by "patigeni fasting". This fasting is usually done by "pamong desa" (village leader) such as "dukun" (medicine man) and "wong sepuh" (legent old man)

Wilujengan Kawolu

It's done at 1st in the eighth months. It's for celebrating the earth, water, fire, wind, sun, moon, star, and outer space. "Sesaji" (the requirement to the ancient, so we will get what we want) at Wilujengan Kapat, Wilujengan Kapitu and Wilujengan Kawolu is the same as at Wilujengan Karo. Differences is only in the charm's words

Wilujengan Kasanga

It's done in the nineth months, for celebrating "Babakan Hawa Sanga". It's meant these are nine hole in the human body like mouth, ears, nose, sex, bust, center, bottom, eyes and sweat. This ceremony is for taking care of country / village. "Sesaji" (present) is like Wilujengan Kapat, Kapitu and Kawolu, but it is added by one chicken more, it's gone around the village together and then the chicken is cut and plant in the garden of villages leader

Wilijengan Kasada

This is the very famous ceremony, a lot of people from Indonesia and foreign come to Bromo to see this ceremony. Very sacred and interesting in procession. It's held in the twelveth when full moon. The place is in the "Poten" (Hindusm Pura) and called by "Yadnya Kasada". This's a great heritage in religion ceremony, the relic of Majapahit Kingdom (ancient period) which it keep be eternal until today. If you would like to follow this ceremony completely, it's meant you dress with Tenggerese fashion, you may as the permission to the village leader or medicine man. And usually, they allow you to be as Tenggerse in this program

Bromo (3) : The Tenggerese Culture

Because Tenggerese are also Majapahit Kingdom people, so they bring the Majapahit culture at the new area. Because they want to hide their identity. They escape from Majapahit. But their culture still alive un til today. They speak Javanesse Tengger, it's different from East Java. They know about "Semedi" (pray), "Ngebleng Fasting" (not eat and drink at all), "Mutih Fasting" (only eat rice and water), it's depent on sun. It's called "Candrasengkala"

The names of dates and "Pasaran" (Javanesse day) are not different from Java, that is "Radite" for Sunday, "Soma" for Monday, "Anggara" for Tuesday, "Budha" for Wednesday, "Wrespati" for Thursday, "Sukra" for Friday, and "Tumpek" for Saturday. And "Pasaran" is "Petakan" for Legi / sweet, "Abritan" for Pahing, "Kuningan" for Pon, "Cemengan" for Wage and "Manca Warna" for Kliwon. This is Javanesse day.

They use Caka Year, 1 year is consists of 354 days. It's divided into 12 months :
(1) Kasa Month
(2) Karo Month
(3) Katiga Month
(4) Kapat Month
(5) Kalima Month
(6) Kanem Month
(7) Kapitu Month
(8) Kawolu Month
(9) Kasanga Month
(10) Kasepuluh Month
(11) Desta Month
(12) Kasada Month

Almost every "Wilujengan Month", the certain ceremony based on the characteristic of that month

1st group, after departure at Juanda International Airport - Surabaya did the trip to Ijen Crater then continue to Bromo to joined with 2nd group on 04th of Sept 2009. In Bromo, trip to Mt Penanjakan (the highest point in Bromo area) overlooking Sunrise, around of Bromo & Sunset. Then to Bromo Crater, Savannah and following "The Yadnya Kasada", the annual Tenggerese festival celebrating the volcano gods of Mt Bromo. Preceded by a short visit to Sidoarjo to view the "mud flood" phenomena, still active to this day. Driving from Surabaya through Probolinggo and return.

Bromo (2) : The Tenggerese

Bromo is located in The Bromo – Tengger – Semeru National Park, and the people who living in this area is called by “Tenggerese”

Having found a “Tengger” charter in 851 Saka (Hindusm dated, similar with 929 years) and “Penanjakan” charter in 1324 Saka (1402 years) is known that a “Wandalit” village in the Tengger mountainious, there is “Hulun Hyang” (God men = people who have strong religion), they are called by “Hila – Hila” (holy). Therefore, Tengger is free from Majapahit tax donation. This area is a “special place”

The Tenggerese society is obeclient to God, have history relation with Majapahit. A king gives special attention to that people. So, it’s difference from Hindu follower in Tengger and in Bali

Having strong confident to defend the culture for many centuries without influencing the era changing makes the scientist specially anthropologist from Indonesia or other countries interested in researching it. So, there many version of writing about The Tenggerese. They can be in story, tale, serat and kidung, legend and also scientific writing. The western scientist that ever writes about it, is Nancy J Smith and Robert W Hefner. Their writing is based on their own version

According to etimology “Tengger” means stand (without moving) and philosophically “Tengger” means “tengering budi luhur” (this is Javanesse language, meant “signing a good manner”). It can be proved by Tengger society that they live full of peacefull, safe, there is no thief or criminal. In myth, Tenggerese is known coming from the word Teng (the last of Rara Anteng’s name) and Ger (the last part of Jaka Seger’s name). They are a couple married who are the beginning of Tengger society.

Prabu Brawijaya (Brawijaya King), the last king of Majapahit kingdom has a princess from the wife, she was Queen Padmi. Her name is Rara Anteng. She is educated by Resi Ki Dadap Putih (teacher’s name) who living in Tengger Mountanious (still great jungle). Oneday, when Jaka Seger comes to this place, he met Rara Anteng . Falling in love and marrying. Ki Dadap Putih allows them to be a husband and wife.

For many years, they haven’t children. Then, Jaka Seger and Rara Anteng pray in “Watu Kuta” (a sacred place) faced to Bromo mountain. They hope that God will accept their want. Afterwards, they have many children, but one of them must be sacrified for Bromo mountain.
The first child’s name is “Tumenggung Klewung”. Jaka Seger and Rara Anteng had 25 children and the last child’s name is “Raden Kusuma”. They are happy as a family, having a lot of children, but also worry if they remember about their promise to Bromo mountain, then they didn’t allowed their children to come or close to Bromo mountain. Specially for their mother, Rara Anteng, because she loved their so much, and in other side that she must keep her promise to God (in Hindusm, God is called by “Sang Hyang Agung”). Finally, they think that they have to sacrifice their son. They hide their children in Penanjakan mountain. But it wasn’t making them safe. The lava brings their son, Raden Kusuma to Bromo mountain. Raden Kusuma disappears mysteriously. Then, the situation is back normally. There’s a sound said that their son disappears because of rheir promise. They must keep their promise. And they must give agriculture products at the full moon of 14th in Kasada. It is for Bromo mountain

And then, every this month people always do what Roro Anteng and Jaka Seger done. This custome is called by “Yadnya Kasada”

The children’s name of Baginda Purbowaseno Mangkurat (“King Purbowaseno Mangkurat”) in Tengger’s children always concern with the holy places. He has 25 children. The holy places in Bromo are Ringgit mountain (first son, Tumenggung Klewung), Penanjakan mountain (the sixteenth son, Raden Mas Sigit), Semeru mountain (the twenty fourth son, Demang Diningrat) and the last is Bromo mountain (the last son, Raden Kusuma)

Hindu in Tengger and Bali are different. In Tengger, there is no “Kasta” (people living grade), people believe that Sang Hyang Maha Agung (God) is a leader in the universe. They believe something hidden and nature phenomenas such as sun eclipse, moon eclipse and earthquake. They still believe dynamism, fithesisme. They also believe “Bhatara – bhatara”. Batara Krisna protects the people, Bhatara Iswara has symbol in white, keeping the east direction. Brahma’s symbol is red to keep the west, Batara Wisnu’s symbol is black to keep the north. Batara Guru’s symbol is five coloursto keep in the middle. Tenggerese pray in the morning, afternoon and evening by read the sacred book “The Puja Tri Sandhya”. A month, twice in fullmoon and panglong 15th, they pray in Sanggar Pamujan. After the government confirms that Tenggerese is Hindu Dharma, is built the places for praying. Their attitude based on “Karma Phala”. Karma Phala means the result of the action.

They believe that good action (“cubhakarma”) will get a good result and bad action (acubhakarma) will get a bad result. Karma Phala become a motivation to do a good action. They are honest, simple and respective. They never lock their door in the evening and there is no thief there. It’s caused they believe the Karma Phala. Corn is being their food. They keep it in traditionally in the outside of the house without guard. Corn is kept in bamboo and called by “Sigiran”, put in besides of house.

The groups of Tengger society is lead by a medicine man, called by “Dukun”. He has duty and responsibility in leading ceremony and praying. He is helped by others, they are :
1. Wong Sepuh (old man), his duty is to help the medicine man to prepare “Sesaji” (present) in the dead ceremony
2. Legen, his duty is to help the medicine man to prepare the equipment and “Sesaji” (present) in wedding party / ceremony
3. Dukun Sunat, his duty is to circumcise the son (nearly adult). But it is different from moslem, circumcising in Tengger just cut a little
4. Dukun Bayi (nurse), his / her duty is to help a mother who will get birth

Medicine man here is very important in Tengger, so every village has medicine man. He is choosen by people with the conditions :
1. Married man
2. The son of medicine man
3. Mastering the charms
To exam the medicine man to be is done in Poten, the place where is Yadnya ceremony is done and do when Kasada ceremony

Bromo (1) : Preview

Bromo is not only famous in Indonesia but also in the world. There are many tourists come to this place. They want to stay longer

Seeing the sunrises, you can go upstairs on the Bromo volcano.You also can play and write your name or identity near the Bromo volcano

Bromo volcano is located in the Bromo Tengger National Park (BTNP). It's a sophisticated one. It's very easy to get there. It's about 1000 – 3676 metres from the sea level. Bromo Tengger Semeru is mountanious and it is the biggest one in Java.

In the north of this, there is Tengger caldera with the diametres 8 – 10 kilometres, the height is 200 – 700 metres. The Tengger caldera Is about 5290 hactres large. In this place, there are Bromo volcano (2392 m), Mt Batok (2470 m), Mt Kursi (3392 m), Mt Watangan (2601 m), Mt Widodaren (2600 m) where Bromo volcano is still active.

Beside for tourism industry, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is also for researching the development of knowledge, education, conservation of nature. It's done by a technic unit for Forestry and Nature Conservation Department, Forestry Department

According to Schmidt and Ferguson, the climate of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is type C and D. The rainy season is begin on October and end on March. The temperature is about 7 – 18 celcius degree

The vegetation type of it is mountanious Rainy forest. It consists of Alfin Forest, Cemara (a spruce / casuarina) forest, plain and caldera vegetation. And the plants are Cemara (Casuarina Junghuhniana), Akasia (Accasia Decurens), Mentigi (vacinium varingae folium), Adas (anethum graveolens), Senduro or Tan Alayu or Edelwies flower (anaphalis javanica) and many kinds of orchids in the South of Semeru. The animals that we can find in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park are deer (cervus timorensis), hind (muntiacus muncak), budeng / monkey (presbytis cristata), pita bird (pitta guajana), rangkok (rhysticeros undulatus), bido (spilomischeela bido) and belibis bird (anas supercilosa)

The gate to go to Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) and Bromo mountain, you have to go to Cemorolawang village first. It's the noisiest place. You can camp, enjoy the scenery, go to Sea of Sand by horse or on foot. To go to pick of Bromo mountain, you go to through the stairs. The sunrises is a beautiful scenery in Bromo mountain, you can see at 04.00 am when you are in Cemorolawang

The route of Cemorolawang is Probolinggo – Tongas / Ketapang – Sukapura – Ngadisari – Cemorolawang, it's about 45 kilometres by private car.
