Scuba Diving on the Sunshine Coast

You may be surprised but the Sunshine Coast offers some of the best cool water diving in the world.

The Sunshine Coast offers 80 kms of pristine coastline. Divers can enjoy beautiful mountain-scapes, surface intervals on tranquil beaches and spectacular marine life. There are many different types of dives available including shipwrecks, high current drift diving and there are plentiful dive sites available for every skill level.

Divers return to the Sunshine Coast again and again to dive as the visibility is incredible all year round. The water is crystal clear and unpolluted. The Sunshine Coast is popular for both boat and shore dives.

One of the most popular dives site on the Sunshine Coast is the Skookumchuck Narrows. Though this is the most famous dive site, however it is only recommended for experience divers. There is abundant sea life at this site due to high tidal exchange. This dive only available during slack tides.

The Sunshine Coast is also home to a great wreck dive. The 366' foot wreck of the HMCS Chaudiere was sunk in 1992 by the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia. It was placed to make a habitat for marine life and a place for divers to play on an otherwise featureless bottom. The wreck is home to huge resident ling cod.

Pender Harbour Music Society

The Pender Harbour Music Society is pleased to present a special performance on Sunday February 12th at 2.00pm. Pianist Linda Lee Thomas, "Chamber Musician Supreme," and bandoneonist Jonathan Goldman of the Legendary Canadian group "Quartango," will be performing at the Pender Harbour School of Music. This unforgettable duo will be bringing tango to West Coast audiences.

Since 1972, Linda Lee Thomas has been the principal pianist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Radio Orchestra. In 2000, she was inducted into the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to the industry. She has become Canada's foremost tango musician.

The Farm Gate Winter Market will be running every Thursday from 3pm to 6pm from December to March. This is a great opportunity to shop locally and support the community this winter.

The market takes place at the Roberts Creek Hall Kitchen in collaboration with Curry in the Creek.

Christmas Carol Cruise Sechelt

Celebrate Christmas Sunshine Coast style! This festive event takes place on Saturday December 17th at 6pm. Bring the whole family; the kids will love watching this unique Christmas experience.

Boats from marinas and private docks around the Sechelt Inlet will light up for this annual event. The boats will gather in front of the Lighthouse Pub and then take a roundtrip cruise out to Tuwanek and back to Porpoise Bay. Traditional Christmas Carols will be ringing loud and clear from the coastal towboat “Kinnaird” which is the lead vessel for this event.

This is a free event and is family friendly. You can enjoy this magical display at any local beach. The best location to watch the boats is at the Provincial Park Beach in Porpoise Bay. There will also be a bonfire at the boat launch in Sandy Hook.

Woodland Christmas

The Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society is pleased to host a “Woodland Christmas” on Saturday, December 4th from 3,30pm to 6pm . Enjoy the winter wonderland in the in the Sparling Pavilion at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden. There will be music, refreshments, and a visit with more than a dozen Santa’s! Around sunset there will be a tree-lighting ceremony followed by songs from the Arbutus Sounds Chorus. At the end of the day there will be Christmas carols around the bonfire.

This is a great event for families, friends and kids. The children will be able to make a holiday craft and there will be a story time with Grandma June.

This will also be a great place to buy Christmas gifts including calendars, pottery, living wreaths, preserves and home baking. All proceeds will go to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society. This museum is located in the heart of Gibson’s Landing at 716 Winn road. The opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10:30am to 4:30pm. Discover the historical past of the Sunshine Coast. There are two floors of exhibits to explore as well as a resource room, reference library, and extensive archives with over 9,000 photographs & documents. The museum also has gift shop selling items such as art books, postcards, children’s books, wood crafts and more.

2. Spa Day

Enjoy a day at one of the Spas on the Sunshine Coast. The spa at Rockwater Secret Cove Resort in Halfmoon Bay offers massage, facial treatments and aesthetics. The spa is unique as you can experience a massage outdoors in the winter spa tent with heated slate floors and roaring fireplace.

Roberts Creek Christmas Craft Fair

Visit the Roberts Creek Community Association 42nd Annual Christmas Craft Fair this November. The fair takes place at the Roberts Creek Hall and Masonic Hall. This is a great place to do all your Christmas shopping and for unique, handmade gifts.

The fair will feature local artisans and expert crafters. There will be beautiful local art, crafts and artisan foods, raffle prizes, yummy treats and lots of holiday cheer.

The Christmas Craft fair will take place on Friday November 25th from 6 to 9pm, Saturday November 26th and Sunday November 27th from 10am to 4pm. There will be a $2 entry all weekend for both halls. Come and check out some wonderful vendors.

Sunshine Coast Mushroom Festival

The Sunshine Coast’s celebration of all things fungal will be held on Saturday October 15th and Sunday October 16th. The festival will take place in Madeira Park. The festival will feature activities for novices and fungal experts alike.

The celebrations will be from 11am to 4pm on Saturday October 16th at the Pender Harbour Community Hall in Madeira Park. There will be a mushroom display table where you can bring your own mushrooms for id-ing. There will also be cooking demonstrations by local chefs, vendors of local produce and a book sale.

The evening event will consist of dinner at the Painted Boat Restaurant in Madeira Park. After enjoying a three-course meal, complete with wine pairings, you can enjoy Larry Evans' feature presentation: "Andes to the Amazon: Mushrooms from the Other America".

On Sunday, join Larry Evans for a limited-registration foray. This is a great opportunity to learn more about mushrooms from a true expert. After the foray, head to the Painted Boat restaurant, where the chef will cook the edible mushrooms that have been collected.

This is going to be fun and tasty weekend!

The 8th annual Sechelt Festival of the Arts is happening from October 17th to 23rd. Don’t miss this exciting showcase of music, visual and performing arts. The event will feature professional local artists who will entertain, inspire, and engage.

The festival happens in Sechelt in a number of different venues including the Raven’s Cry Theatre, the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, Seaside Centre, and The Sound Studio. The Sechelt Festival of the Arts will appeal to people of all ages and interests. Highlights of the festival include:

October 21st: Main Stage Showcase: Art + Environment Art + Environment will feature collaborative performances inspired by themes about the natural environment.

October 22nd: Main Stage Showcase: Tapestry Tapestry will feature collaborative performances delicately threaded together through music, poetry, dance, and visual art.

October 19th to October 23rd: Juried Art Show Located at the Seaside Centre, the Art Show will host a spectacular presentation of the creative works of Sunshine Coast visual artists.

October 23rd: Family Entertainment A Sunday afternoon of great entertainment featuring storytelling, puppetry, and a theatrical collaboration.

October 22nd: Classical Music Performances Inspiring performances by Katherine Hume, Tom Kellough, and Douglas Hagerman.

October 23rd: New Music Kitchen Party An improvisational performance that will showcase a collage of sights and sounds that emanate from the kitchen while preparing a meal.

October 22nd to October 23rd: Art and Music Workshop Series A series of free creative workshops that explore music, sound and art will be held throughout the Festival Weekend.

October 22nd Experimental Floss: - Emerging Artist Showcase An entertaining showcase with new artists performing improvisational music, directed by Steve Wright from The Sound Studio.

October 17 to October 23: Art in the Streets Performers will bring the art to the people, with memorable art ‘moments’ enlivening shopping malls and other public places throughout Sechelt.

2. Davis Bay Beach, Davis Bay

3. Bonniebrook Beach, Gibsons BC

Over the weekend of August 20th and 21st, the Pender Harbour Lions Club is hosting the 2nd annual Pender Harbour Garlic and Music Festival. The event is located at the Pender Harbour Lions Park just a 40 minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver and a scenic 35 minute drive up to Pender.

This is an exciting weekend filled with garlicky food, great music and lots of fun. This family fun event is a fundraiser for the Pender Harbour Lions Club and features horseback riding, haywagon rides, childrens playground, continuous live music, many garlic and other vendors, food concessions and other activities.

The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts
