Holiday hot cocoa ornaments

My daughter wanted to make quick Christmas gifts so this is what we did.

Supplies

*plastic ornaments
*peppermint hot cocoa
*dozens of different festive *holiday candy sprinkles

Tools
*Spoon
*funnel
*Tray

Fill ornaments 4/5 full cocoa finish with different candy sprinkles recap add curling ribbon

Note decorative do not hang with hot cocoa in it too heavy will fall and make mess...

Beaded hair piece and Boutannier

My daughter Starr and myself got together today to make a hair piece and boutannier for my youngest daughter to use for homecoming next weekend.

Her dress is sort of a peachy pink.

So we gathered my bead boxes that had those color sin it and some turquoise and some gold.

This is a side hair piece while it was under construction. The little flowers in the left photo are actually parts of the boutannier. This is the hair piece while it was under construction.

This image below is the piece all done with the silk leaves added we use twist pins to hold these items in the hairstyles my children do.

candy apples

Because fall is here this is a common treat to eat and make.

Supplies

2 quart sauce pan
cookie sheet
shortening
granulated sugar 3 cups
flavoring cinnamon or cherry optional ( my family is allergic to cinnamon as of 3 years ago so we avoid that flavor which is sad as we all love it)
1 tsp lemon juice
water 1.5 cups
1/2 tbp red food coloring liquid or 1 tsp paste Wilton brand which i like but use what you like best
clean dry room temperature apples with steams removed about 8 to 10 depends on size tart apples work and taste best
wood candy apple sticks the same number as apples

grease cookie sheet set aside
prep apple by sticking sticks into top of apples where the steam had been set aside
combine water sugar coloring in sauce pan stir well
bring water sugar coloring to a good boil (300 to 310 degrees f ) do not stir while cooking
then turn heat to medium high and cook till hard crack state you will know this state when candy liquid drizzled in a cup of cold water turns to candy strings
add flavoring stir in
tilt pan be careful very hot syrup and roll apples in liquid let drip above pan to get rid of excess place on cookie sheet repeat till all are coated let cool ( can coat cookie sheet with large granulated sugar to make a sort of crystal effect on bottom of apples I didn't do that but some people like it that way
share eat and enjoy

about 30 mins total time cooking not counting cool time another 30 mins
best to eat in the first 24 hours as the candy wicks moisture from the apple and gets sticky over time do not store in fridge makes sticky faster dry area best

tips:

if mixture starts to harden while dipping just set back on heat to soften it back up and continue dipping again.
also if you mix in 1/8 tsp solid shortening before you dip you won't get as many bubbles on your apples I didn't do that as I don't mind the bubbles but if you do give that a go.

In the course of making the horse and knight outfits we had few that wore the same colors teams so to speak. I wish I had take photos each day but I didn't so I can't show everything we worked on but you can get a hint of it.

This above and below is for the horse to wear this horse is ridden by a male knight.

This is the matching horse rode by a female knight.

This is for the female knight to wear this was during the construction process. I love the stain glass effect by layering the leathers in the openings.

This is one of the female knights and Alex who did a lot of the mask work for the horses he is also the glueing-up king. He has tons of talent he drawers characters for his usual living.

Fitting the muslin mask for use to use as the template to make the leather masks.

This is the other horse one has triangle diamond shapes and one is sort of like a carousel horse look.

Had to make bum straps sort of like garters or suspenders to hold this piece up so it would not interfere with the horses legs figuring out the length of the straps.

Small origami

When your daughter is trying to figure out how small she can fold an origami flower.

My children have made origami for years... I have stepped on so many bits and pieces of paper torn or cut into little squares it is unbelievable... But I would feel bad if these little bits got stepped on. I can't even see small enough things like this anymore to even attempt to fold this small. She was using small steel crochet hooks as her fingers to fold it.

Internship leather sewing Red Knight

I did a lot of sewing on the leather for the knights and their horses. This set is for the main knight the son of the man that contracted the work. The dragons are laser cut we did some free hand work ( free hand done by Alex Buie).

Wish I owned an Industrial walking foot sewing machine. They are a dream to use when sewing leather and on heavy items which a lot of costumes are. One of my other jobs as an over-hire stitcher is to sew those aprons that you wear when getting x-rays the real heavy ones, I use a walking foot on those too at work. I also work in a local playhouse theater where I help stitch costumes for plays and I work as a dresser there at times.

The different leathers used in these projects was cow, buffalo and deer skins. The different textures and weights of the different hides is interesting in how it drapes and sews. It was interesting also how we pinned them together as pins are not used they are glued up then sewn.

The female in this photo is one of the knighs.

These photos where taken during the fitting. We used painters tape to mark where we wanted things to go. This was because it was easy to remove and didn't mar the leather.

Ren-Faire

My family likes to go to Ren-Faires there was one today. So one of my children went as a pirate, one a dark fae/devil and one as a fox (with armor go figure).

We went late in the day after my middle daughter got off of work so we didn't get to do all the things we usually do That being said we did a lot of stuff still and wore ourselves out.

Two of the costumes we put together in about 5 minutes the other took about 10 mins the joys of having a mom who makes costumes for a living.

Can you tell one of my kids is a ham.

We watched the jousting and the fire eaters talked to the mermaids and so on all the regular things you do at a ren-faire like eat funnel cake at the end of the day we sat down under some trees to rest from the sun and took some photos.

We took our puppy with us to the faire so he can get use to people he was a pirate for a little bit but really didn't like the hat and pouted.

Internship McGrew Studios leather work, knights, horses

During this past summer I did an internship at McGrew studios Jen and Hraefn are amazing artist and pulled together a large group of us to get this project done. This is not a paid for add I am proud I got to work with this amazing group of artist. Please enjoy the photos. I enjoyed patterning, stitching, glueing up , grommeting, brainstorming, lacing, dressing, fitting, and everything else I helped with on this. This was very much a group effort of amazing people I would love to work with all of them again.

"We made custom costumes for Young Living’s jousters, horses and squires in this fantastic project. This is the DGY (David Gary Young) Jousting Team of Young Living Farm in Mona, Utah, and they are amazing. The open, lattice-like costumes for the horses are called caparisons and their face shields are called chamfrons. We’ve created these with leather cut-work and inlay, embellished with decorative metal pieces, rivets and crystals. We built the horse gear using chrome-tanned leathers backed with synthetic Rhino Cloth for extra weight, durability and resistance to wear and mildew. Each horse echoes its jouster’s colors and sometimes his or her coat of arms, as in the case of Jacob Young’s dragons in black and red. The word caparison originates from the 1585–95 Middle French caparasson (now caparaçon) and the Old Spanish caparazón, akin to capa or cape. We made the jousters’ sleeveless surcotes from black bison hide. Each of these tunics laces up the sides and has specialty leather inlay as well as hardware and rivets in either gold or silver. Our design/build team for this was a BIG one- our shop’s usual staff plus additional stitchers and craftspeople jobbing in. A great project and so fun to make such fantastic looks for DGY. leather fun and wire work

My children and I around mother's day went to a ren-fair. At the ren fair my girls bought some leather items from one of their favorite vendors.

China bought some leather I had wanted for years. I am glad she will have fun with it.
I love how this is put together and that it is easily adjusted.

The leather ears were bought by Starr. She bought a few sets and let her sister wear them.

This is not a paid add we just love this company and wanted to share where we got the items from encase someone else is interested.

At this same ren fair Starr commissioned a hair piece as my mothers day gift. It was the first time the gentleman making the items had ever done wire work. He did pretty good he needed a few more twists to hold things together. So after we got home I wrapped his work with the smaller wire you see in the photos to give it strength as it had some integrity issues. This is about the size of a womans hand so it is lather large

My children want to do this type of metal work. So we have some tools to do it when we get a chance to sit down and play to learn a new skill. Which we have not had the time for yet. So we have 3 anvils and some chasing tools.

Wood burned faries

So as you can tell I am trying to get caught up on some of the stuff I have been doing for the last 3 years since I went back to collage (which has come to an end) I did not graduate even though I had great grades life happened and well life gives you a bend in the road and a path to go down the bend or keep on the path you are on. Well I took the bend even if it meant not graduating.
I will not post everything in that time as I can't remember everything I did and made but I will post a few just so in the future my kids know what I did when they look at the blog. This project through was done by my daughter China in our woodworking class we took together. She is making a chest of drawers and wants faries all over it. A lot of these photos where never meant to be on my blog so they may not be the best images... but I am still in love with them all the same for the time and effort she has put into this. This was my daughters first attempt at wood burning she is self taught the class is for cabinet making not wood burning.

Yellow skirt

My children go on a choir tour each summer this last summer they went to California. At 1 am the morning of leaving I realized I had not made a skirt for my daughter who is the choir manager to wear during performances... hers is yellow to match the boys ties the other members of the choir that are female wear dark blue... I took her old skirt that was too small traced it made the modifications to the pattern to go up to the size needed. Then she helped cut it out and I sewed it up fitted her and made more modifications. Some how all in time to leave by 6 a.m. that was a long night.

Antique Settee

My husband and I years ago took an upholstery class together. So every now and again I try and re-due a little project.

To the left the two original layers the settee had on it. instead of fixing the bones of the pieces the previous owners just covered things up. Which made for a lumpy bumpy settee. I am smoothing things out and re warping things to make it strong and smooth again.

The below fabric is what I am currently putting on it.

Forgot to take a before photo. This was during tear down of the back of the settee. The fabric you see on the seat I will be removing It was pretty fabric but was lumpy and the settee creaks and sounds like it is going to fall apart.

I love brass tacks and pretty trims.

As you can see the bottom is broken out. Need to fix that before I can go forward with this project. Thus the reason it sounds bad and such.

This it it on hold till I have a moment to figure out if I am fixing the bottom or paying someone to do it.

This is a collection of the tools and supplies I am using.

I fond this settee and a matching chair at a local thrift shop the pair was only 60 dollars so I thought it would be a fun thing to do.

sewing room

The above machines are ones I have bought or been given over the years I love them all lined up in a row. I don't care that some don't work they are beautufl to me.

This is parts of my sewing room. It is a tiny room with a lot of stuff in it. I have been working on it for few months to get a lot of stuff out of storage so I can get back to actually making things again. The last three years going back to collage did not leave much time for personal projects. So much so I have a basket of half sewn items literally that have not been touch in three years I want to get finished soon and put the patterns away. Hopefully I have not lost any pieces.

beaded corset

Was making a beaded corset for a class at school the class finished. I got the item done before the class finished but I wanted to embellish it more. So I am adding beads to it still. For the class I had to draft and pattern from a sloper and fit it to me then do the modifications to cinch in where I wanted it to. The tapes that form the vertical stripes on it are antique batten berg tapes. The corset has a spoon busk and spiral boning.

The mannequin scene in the photo above and the ones before I found on face-book marketplace super inexpensively. It is a functioning S curved corset which accommodates pigeon breast shirts well. One of these days I need to name my dress-forms. The photos below are not mine but from the original seller. She had inheritaded it from her grandmother and had no use for it. I was so excited to add her to the family of dressfoms in my home.

Wood sewing cabinet and wood eggs

This is a project I started a year ago and got put on hold because of work and school and just life in general. It is meant to be a cabinet to hold home sewing machines. That has a drop down table to sew on. When it is finished it has doors with shelves in them to hold sewing supplies like hard plastic rules and such.

I hope to get this finished by Christmas and in my sewing room to be used even though it is not large the storage space it will create in my small sewing space will be amazing It will clear off so many counters in there.

I hope to get the front of it wood burned my middle daughter has agreed to draw an image on it and burn it with me.

These are some eggs my oldest daughter , China, turned for me in her woodworking class. I received them in my Easter basket. My middle daughter drew the images and the oldest wood burned them.

progress on pull tab maille

China had made a little progress on her project back in November but I had never shown it. She adjusted one of my dress forms to her size and worked on the piece on the dress form. Some mods happened afterward as she had made the armscye too small for her arm to fit through. Thus causing her to drop the area under the arm a little lower to accommodate this flaw.

She still has some work to do on the hem line of the piece. This is only for coz play this technique but you can get fun patterns and designs with the so many colors of pull tabs available. They are hooked together with regular links used in making chainmaille.

The funny part was on the back she was mirroring the pieces she had left to right and didn't realize she had made a face. When her sisters and I told her there was a face she saw it and went back and reworked some sections purposely emphasis it more

Beaded rose

My daughter Starr made this as a thank you for a small act of kindness. She was at the grocery store buying a gift for a friend when she discovered at the check out that she was 50 cents short the casher a nice young man (teenager) pulled the change out of his own pocket and made up the difference.

So when we got home she instant set to work to say thank you. 6.5 hours later this was made. With way more supplies than the 50 cents would have bought supplies from my beading cupboard and her box of beads. But who can put a price on random acts of kindness. He did it just to be kind and she did it just to say thanks and neither know each other.

First she made the rose followed by the filler flowers then she added silk leaves that we usually use in corsages. Then added a chop stick for the steam and wrapped that all in floral tape.

Once all made then she added the foil cello to finish it off.

Nuts and bolts / lace cupboard

A while a ago I bought for 65 dollars and old used hardware store nut and bolt storage container in was full of Greece and oil and dirty.

So after several days of scrubbing and a few layers of enamel paint this is what I got. Not the best paint job but it will be cute in my sewing room to hold trims. I also lined the bottom of the compartments with plastic drawer contact paper to try and keep it a little cleaner.

Souvenir coin jewelry

For years my 3 daughter's and myself have collected souvenirs of squished coins. Pennies are the easiest to find. So we had tons of pennies not so many dimes nickels or quarter ones... So the pennies made a necklace and the "silver" coins made a bracelet in time the pennies will be enough to make a belt sort of like a belly dancing belt.
