<itunes:summary>Recent reports in the media and on other blogs have pointed to some tense words and disagreements arising out of this session at the 2008 Sunstone Symposium. Unfortunately the emphasis has been placed on a few ill-chosen words, and the controversy appears to be overblown.

While it is true that there was a strong disagreement in the hallway after the session, it's also true that the participants were engaged and committed enough to keep talking. Sunstone encourages mutual respect, and while we see some disappointing actions on occasion, overall the symposium is a place where competing ideas and faith questions can be worked through. The important thing to remember about these participants is that they are engaged with, thinking about, and wrestling with the issues.

There were many great sessions at this year's event, and we will highlight some of these in the coming days and weeks. Further, all sessions will be available for purchase and download soon on SunstoneMagazine.com. We are working to get them processed and available.

So, to begin with, we offer Session 173 as a free download. We hope you enjoy it. Judge for yourself whether this was a controversial session, or merely a session with thoughtful-yet-competing ideas. And, as always, we welcome your comments on this issue below.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The week between Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem and his triumphant resurrection from the dead is the most significant week in human history. Beginning with the early church, Christians celebrated the events of this week and for two millenia they have been the focus of annual celebrations of what has been called the Passion of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Beginning with Palm Sunday and moving through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, Christians throughout the world mark the last great events in Christ's life. All of these holy days lead us to the great drama of Easter Sunday when the angel rolled back the stone from the tomb and said to his disciples, 'He is not here, for he is risen."

Latter-day Saints celebrate the last of these holy days, but not the others, and yet there is no doctrinal reason why we cannot join with other Christians in offering our devotions throughout this week. This presentation offers an historical overview of Holy Week and presents the case that Latter-day Saints, especially with the Church's new emphasis on being the Church of Jesus Christ, should join with other Christians in making this an annual holy festival.

<itunes:summary>If you#39;ve thought there was nothing new to discuss about the connections between Masonic influences on early Mormon history and theological development, you haven#39;t yet read Don Bradley#39;s article #39;The Grand Fundamental Principles of Mormonism: Joseph Smith#39;s Unfinished Reformation#39; in the April 2006 Sunstone. But even more than the new understandings about Mormonism and Masonry, this article provides a wonderful entry into the Mormon prophet#39;s hopes for reshaping Church emphases during the final year of his life. What would Mormonism be like today were the Grand Fundamental Principles Smith attempted to install as central to LDS lives as Buddhism#39;s Four Noble Truths or the Five Pillars of Islam are to adherents of those traditions? If we like that vision, what might we do to bring it into clearer focus?

This new podcast features an interview with Don Bradley conducted by Sunstone editor Dan Wotherspoon. In it, they discuss the background and path through which Bradley came to see the connections he did, plus the article#39;s broad outlines and projects that Bradley is currently working on to bring some of these things into greater focus.

<itunes:summary>We're excited to announce the posting of a new SunstonePodcast! In it, Emily Pearson, daughter of Gerald and Carol Lynn Pearson, reflects on the ways her life has been affected by growing up as the daughter of a gay man and then, years later, marrying one. Many SunstonePodcast listeners may know that former husband: Steven Fales, the actor whose one-man show, Confessions of a Mormon Boy just closed its off-Broadway run. (Steven was the interview subject in SunstonePodcast #6).

In the interview, Emily takes us much deeper into the story she outlined in an essay, "Irreconcilable Differences," in the April 2006 Sunstone magazine. We know you'll enjoy hearing her powerful story.

The Vampire Slayer as Spiritual Guide (Jossey-Bass, 2003). Jana is also the author of a regular Sunstone column, "Anxiously Engaged." The interview touches on these projects, along with Jana's path from preparing to become a Presbyterian minister to joining the LDS church, and Jana's interests in religious praxis over doctrine, and in "spiritual renewal" among Latter-day Saints.

Most of all, as Dan shares in the early part of the podcast, Jana is simply "One of the Cool Mormons Everyone Deserves to Get to Know."

<itunes:summary>Actor, playwright, and stand-up comedian Steven Fales debuted his one-man play, "Confessions of a Mormon Boy," as a reading at the 2001 Salt Lake Sunstone Symposium. In this play, Fales tells the captivating story of his failed attempt to overcome his "same-sex attraction" through "reparative therapy," which resulted in his divorce and excommunication from the Mormon Church. After his perfect Mormon world fell apart, Fales took his pain and confusion to New York City where he quickly descended into the gay underworld of escorting and drugs. Both touching and funny, Mormon Boy is a 90-minute reclamation saga of a Latter-day prodigal son.

This very personal play shows the link between spiritual abuse and addiction. Fales defines spiritual abuse as any time an individual, group, or institution uses religion to justify telling or showing anyone they are not worthy of god#39;s full love and blessings. Mormon Boy also illustrates the dilemma of those struggling to reconcile their dreams of becoming straight with the realities of being gay and what it costs to accept or deny that truth when children are involved.

In this SunstonePodcast episode, Sunstone editor Dan Wotherspoon interviews Steven about the play's journey from its earliest incarnations, full of Mormon in-humor and a soft-pedaling of the darkest parts of Steven's journey, to its arrival in New York, now bolder, brasher, more fully self-revelatory.

In the interview, Steven talks openly about the play and the many twists and turns it took on its way to this prestigious venue, as well as the personal issues he deals with in the play and as a gay father. Steven also offers a moving perspective on the kinds of spiritual abuse that too often occur in the name of love.
