Sunway hospitality and culinary students prepared a banquet

Sunway University’s Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Management students recently participated in the Youth Chef Table 2012 to have a feel for preparing a banquet. The Inaugural Youth Chef’s Table dinner organised by Chef Richmond Lim, special events chairman of Chefs Association of Malaysia, saw 80 students from various culinary related programmes including Sunway’s BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management and Diploma in Culinary Arts students preparing a scrumptious nine-course dinner for 260 guests at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The students were responsible in preparing one main course, one canapé and two desserts for their guests. They decided to prepare pan-fried codfish ‘persillade’ in a rich, heavy and creamy crustacean sauce with baby carrots and zucchini for added flavour and colour. For the canapé, the students went with a leek and salsify, a vegetable root soup for a nutty, creamy and earthy blend of flavours and delicious strawberry crumble and chocolate truffles were prepared for the final finish.

Anthony Liew Khar Khiaw said, “It was very tiring coming up with portions to feed 260 mouths. Timing and preparation were crucial to ensure the results we wanted. We had to plan the menu for the day and serve our guests course by course.”

Lee Kai Sean added, “This experience is priceless as we gained knowledge beyond our kitchen preparations classes. We had to learn how to operate a combi-oven, something we’ve never used before. While we are often told that technique is vital, in preparing for this banquet we had to use simple and brief techniques to ensure our preparation was well within time.”

Chef Chong Wei Tzeh who accompanied the students to the event said, “The student’s skills were really put to the test as they are used to preparing food for guests on a smaller scale. This banquet is a good platform for them to gain exposure, improve their skills and take opportunities to learn. Through occasions like this, they are able to network and meet chefs of the industry as well as other practicing students.” Chef Chong also emphasised the importance of speed, timing, organisation, preparation, temperature and the importance of being able to operate various equipment in the kitchen.

The students were also taken for wine tasting training and butchery sessions by Chef Richmond where they learned heaps. The Youth Chef’s Table truly challenged the students away from their comfort zone. Each team had a 10-member crew where five were responsible for the kitchen and the rest for serving.

To continue this tradition of trailblazing positive change, the Sunway Education Group launched it’s first-ever Sunway Education Expo (“SEE”) 2012 (to be held on 6th and 7th October 2012) during the logo launch. As a signature event for the 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee celebrations, SEE seeks to open the eyes of students and the public to a world of learning that is fun, exciting and inspiring to mark Sunway Education’s 25-year journey in the social and economic landscape of Malaysia. SEE as the name suggests also celebrates the future of learning.

With a single-minded vision to push education to greater heights, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Founder of the Sunway Education Group and Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, has sought to develop an effective teaching and learning philosophy that paves the way for students to realise their own success stories. This vision was drawn from his personal story as a successful trailblazer in industry and is the inspiration to all Sunway students.

Education and learning have been the essence of the Sunway Education Group while the SEE with its theme, “inspiring hearts and minds”, represents the aspiration of its Founder to push the boundaries of learning and sharing.

“Education programmes should be visionary and ever-changing. Therefore, as the centre for education, we structure our teaching and learning to help students achieve success beyond the learning years to thrive in the working world and contribute positively to society”, says Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

We want our students to engage themselves in intellectual activities that inspire them to be creative independent thinkers while identifying their abilities that will sharpen their skills and knowledge in their respective areas”.

During the Sunway Education Expo, new ideas and creative approaches used will embody the vision of positive change to the world. The topics will be divided into four key areas of the vision and they are:

Visitors will participate in activities such as seminars, presentations and workshops that will draw them into a world of experiential learning that is both fun and informative. They will be inspired by the creative artworks on exhibit by Sunway University’s Department of Communication and Liberal Arts. Presentations on culinary masterpieces by the Centre of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Management as well as performances by renowned musicians will spark the creative spirit within.

The drivers of SEE will be individuals from within the SE Group as well as invited local and international personalities. These icons and role models who are trailblazers in their own right will impart their invaluable experience at the SEE.

The topics covered in the seminars represent the core discipline areas within Sunway University and by extension, the other members of the SE Group including the Sunway Colleges and the Sunway International School. The aim of SEE is to have inspiring individuals to present creative ideas and innovations in Business, Language, Arts, Science and Technology (BLAST).

In the spirit of celebrating learning experiences in this 25th year, Sunway Education will also be holding two conferences in the lead-up to SEE. The 3rd Global Accounting and Organisational Change Conference (GAOC) will be held on 14th - 17th July and the 2nd Pre-University Conference organised by Sunway College will be held on 8th September.

Coming soon on 24th May is a Dialogue Session entitled “Students’ Voice, Power and Responsibility” organised in collaboration with the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (“IDEAS”) on the role of education in promoting democracy. Just recently there was the 1st Peer Counselling Conference aimed at developing a culture of people helping people in students. These events will be catalysts for the coming together of thought and future leaders to teach and learn in a two-way exchange enabling participants to become the inspirational agents of change that can contribute towards the advancement of our nation and the world.

Johan Mahmood Merican, CEO of Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) together with Elizabeth Lee, the Sunway Education Group Executive Director, officiated the opening of Sunway University’s “Get Hired 2012” event recently. The Career Networking Event hosted 42 companies from the private sector, including BDO Malaysia, Citibank, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, MAS, OSK, Petronas and PwC. Over 1000 students from 20 higher education institutions attended.

TalentCorp, which was established under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department to spearhead Malaysia’s talent development initiative in line with the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), co-hosted Get Hired 2012 with Sunway University on its campus. Sunway University is the only private higher institution in Malaysia currently working with Talentcorp to educate students on career paths and to connect them with industry.

Key events in conjunction with Get Hired 2012 included CEO Forums that featured guest speakers such as Mr. Izani Ghani (CFO, Khazanah Nasional), YM Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin (CEO/MD, Theme Attractions and Resorts), and Mr. Joel Neoh (CEO, Groupon Malaysia). Other events included the ‘Lunchtime Quickies’ and ‘Teh Tarik Sessions’ series of talks by local business leaders.

“Addressing the growing need for world-class human capital across Malaysia’s economic landscape requires a strong domestic talent pipeline. This is best achieved through closer engagement between our students and leading Malaysian employers, through platforms such as today’s career fair,” said Johan.

He also expressed his confidence that Get Hired 2012 would help raise awareness and generate interest in the diverse career options available in Malaysia. Engaging leading organisations directly would also help provide young Malaysian talent with a better appreciation of what it takes to succeed in their future careers.

The Career Network Tea at Sunway University was the highlight of Get Hired 2012, which featured booths by the 42 participating companies. Students’ resumes were accepted, and on-the-spot interviews held for exceptional hopefuls. Last year’s inaugural Get Hired event saw participation by 38 local companies.

Get Hired 2012’s objective is to forge connections between top university graduates and employers, and to provide both hiring and employment opportunities. Pre-event activities leading up to the opening, focus on preparing students for the event and for working life, including seminars on job interviewing, resume writing, networking and body language.

Get Hired 2012 was organised by Sunway University’s Student Services Department, backed by the Sunway Education Group under the auspices of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation is a special purpose, not-for-profit vehicle dedicated to giving to society through education. Headed by Founding Trustee YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, the Foundation has to date awarded over RM80 million in scholarships and awards since 1997.

Chancellor of Sunway University, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Awarded Rotary Top Honours

Our Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has been awarded the 2012 Honorary Gold Medal by the Royal Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur, in recognition of his leadership and development of education and research in Malaysia.

Tan Sri Jeffrey received the award from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at a prestigious dinner held at Hotel Istana. The Honorary Gold Medal is one of most prestigious awards given by the Rotary Club. The last time the award was given was nine years ago in 2003.

The Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur (as it was known then), is the oldest in South-East Asia, and existed in spirit as early as 1918 when leaders of government, commerce and professions residing in Kuala Lumpur mooted the idea of forming an association to promote community service and inter-community harmony. In recognition of the 70 years of service the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur had given to the community, the then Sultan of Selangor conferred the royal status on the club effective 8 October 1997.

This is a great honour to the club as no other Rotary club in the world has been given the "Royal" status. On 21 October 1997, Rotary International approved the name change to its present day name.

President of Icograda inspires Sunway DAD students

Sunway’s Department of Art and Design (DAD) students recently met Leimei Julia Chiu, President of Icograda, world body for professional communication design and visual communication, enriching them with creative ideas and sharing her knowledge during a business and design talk in Sunway University. Ms Chiu who is also the Executive Director of the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) and Professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University, Japan was intrigued by the passion of Sunway’s budding talents. The Business and Design talk was organised by wREGA, Graphic Design Association of Malaysia. Through wREGA, the students were fortunate enough to meet Julia as well as other graphic designers in the industry.

Julia may have been dressed in a simple grey blouse and a white shawl but the picture she painted to these students was colourful and enriching. She began the session by asking students to collaborate with committee members of wREGA, who were also graphic designers in the world today to discuss some of the challenges that Graphic Designers in Malaysia face. 19 year old Ibrahim Bin Noor Hisham, shared how Malaysia is lacking in the field of design due to a lack of inspiration. “If we look towards the West, they have Walt Disney and Warner Bros but in Malaysia we do not have an accredited company to look up to. We have been taught to become Engineers, Doctors and Lawyers but you never hear anyone encouraging you to become a graphic designer. I feel Malaysia needs to inspire artists or designers.”

Nguyen Cao Minh, Louise, an International student from Vietnam said it is tough exercising freedom of designing in the graphic design sector. He added, people always thought that more opportunities come to those who enter the Science stream in school. “They tend to think that being a Graphic designer is not a reputable profession,” he said.

Ms Chiu continued her presentation by advising students to focus on the bigger picture. She shared some inspirational projects done by students all around the world that had a different take in the world of designing. Some projects used a unique approach that incorporated designs into products to support communities and the environment. These projects have created and impacted the lives of people who use them especially in education, shelter, health, water, energy and in the transportation sector. The projects have been recognised and awarded for their practicality, impact and creativity that changed the lives of people.

Koh Li Ming, member of wREGA and practicing graphic designer addressed some of the student’s concern at the end of the talk. He said, “Your earnings will double or even triple as you grow with experience in this career. With the right initiative and resources you will be exposed to a new environment that will foster learning and practice.”

JEFFREY CHEAH FOUNDATION SUPPORTS THE REDUCTION OF EDUCATION INEQUITY IN MALAYSIA

Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (“JCF”) and Teach For Malaysia (“TFM”) recently signed a corporate partnership agreement at the newly completed Graduate Centre at Sunway University.

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Ramon Navaratnam, Trustee of JCF and Dato' Noor Rezan Bapoo, Trustee of TFM, signed the agreement, witnessed by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founding Trustee of the JCF and Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group; and Dzameer Zulkifli, Co- Founder of TFM. Also present at the signing ceremony were Tan Sri Rainer Althoff, Trustee of JCF; Sarena Cheah, Executive Director of Strategy and Corporate Development Sunway Group; members of Sunway Group and Sunway Education Group’s senior management team, and 9 Jeffrey Cheah Foundation scholars of Sunway University and Monash University, Sunway campus.

Jeffrey Cheah Foundation contributes RM150,000 to Teach For Malaysia

As a corporate sponsor, JCF contributed RM150,000 to TFM, an amount that will go towards assisting the organisation in achieving its mission to reduce education inequity between rural and urban schools. This Bronze sponsorship entails financial support and non-financial support to TFM.

TFM’s vision is aligned with the fundamental principles of the JCF to give quality education, giving to society, and a vision in perpetuity. The TFM Foundation is working to encourage pedagogy in young Malaysians, which forms the essence of the education sphere.

On JCF’s partnership with TFM, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah said, “Giving back to society through providing quality education to deserving Malaysian students is my personal vision and I am happy to learn that Teach For Malaysia’s vision mirrors that. I hope that JCF’s support will go a long way towards supporting Teach For Malaysia’s mission to end education inequality.”

Tan Sri Navaratnam, in his speech during the ceremony, said TFM's efforts to build a movement set to address education inequity in Malaysia was commendable and added that the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation is pleased to have the opportunity to lend support to the TFM Foundation including sharing the passion of teaching with Fellows in high need schools. It will be an honour for the JCF Trustees to be able to participate in the Teach For Malaysia Week.

Supported by the Ministry of Education, Teach for Malaysia Week will see reputable and well-known personalities invited to teach alongside Teach for Malaysia Fellows. The programme aims to inspire youths in high school to see life beyond their current circumstances, so that they in turn can inspire the public to recognise that education is everyone's responsibility.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, who will be conducting a class in SMK Puchong, Petaling Perdana during Teach For Malaysia Week, said, “Teach For Malaysia Week” is a great opportunity to create greater awareness in Malaysia on the importance of education and equip the future generation with valuable skill sets. I am humbled and honoured to be able to share my experiences with a very different audience that I am used to and hope that I am able to inspire them in one way or another.”

The 1st Not Quite Right Video Competition: Results out!

A total of 55 short films were submitted from all over the country for the 1st Not Quite Right Competition, organised by Sunway University’s Department of Performance and Media for young filmmakers aged between 16-20 years. Many of the entries tackled the theme of ‘not quite right’ with great imagination, humour and gusto.

The competition was aimed at secondary school students. Sunway University intends to organise another competition like this next year and it hopes even more will participate.

Sunway University invited 3 talented people from the media and creative industries to be the NQR judges. They were Liyana Jasmay, award-winning film and television actress and Sunway University alumna; Amir Muhammad, publisher, writer, and award-winning filmmaker and Ezra Zaid, BFM radio host, publisher, and That Effing Show/Pop TeeVee host.

The results were announced on 25 March 2012, at the Roof Top Theatre, Department of Performance & Media, Sunway University.

Glow-in- the-dark ensemble

The Sunway University Ensemble comprising 27 students and alumni shunned lights to embrace Earth Hour on March 31 between 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm as they performed during a recital which raised funds for the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, a non-profit organisation that gives to society through scholarships for the deserving.

The ensemble played with only clip-on lights illuminating their music sheets and donned glow stick bangles on their wrists for more visibility. The ensemble’s leader and conductor, Rockie Siew joined a glow stick on to his baton. Chief musician, Karen Lock said “The colourful glow sticks and music lent a great atmosphere to the event”.

Around 300 people attended the recital and had the opportunity to experience Earth Hour. Half of them also signed the Earth Hour pledge to live green form.

Yoo Ai Lee, a final year B.Bus student (Victoria University twinning programme) and musician said “I thought participating in Earth Hour was relevant especially when we see mother earth deteriorating. Even though one may be rich and can afford to pay for excess usage of water and electricity, money cannot buy everything and it is important that our youth learn to reduce wastage and preserve the environment.”

The ensemble’s leader, Rocky Siew said “We felt proud to participate in Earth Hour. Being in the dark also helped the audience focus on the music and I hope that gave everyone a chance to connect and enjoy the recital even more”.

More Achievements for Sunway’s SHTLM Students

Sunway University’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management (SHTLM) students recently garnered more awards during the Nestle Coffee Competition 2012. Joanna Foong Xian Mae emerged champion while Natasha Binti Mohd Yusof emerged 2nd runner-up in the competition. Organised by Nestle, the competition was open to all colleges and universities around Malaysia.

Joanna Foong Xian Mae beat 19 other participating colleges and universities when she clinched the champion’s trophy for her original creations. To Joanna who is a first year student in the Diploma in Culinary Arts, this is an entirely new experience for her. Joanna elaborated that it was tough juggling between her tight schedule and training for this competition which took up a lot of her time. However, she managed to find her own authentic creations, for one hot coffee beverage and one cold coffee beverage that turned out to be winning recipes.

Joanna named the hot beverage Nasi Lemak after the famous Malaysian dish as it induced similar flavours. She used dried chilli, sugar, dried belacan paste, coconut milk and anchovies that gave the beverage a perfect blend of spiciness, sweetness and added texture from the coconut milk. For her cold beverage, Joanna created the Berry Bliss, where she used blueberries, ginger, basil leaves and coffee to give it a sweet and tannin flavour to the creation.

Natasha Binti Mohd Yusof, a Diploma in Hotel Management student who is in her final semester had previously taken part in this competition in Year 2010. She said, “The contest was more competitive this year as the standards have increased.” Natasha created the Holanaisé for her hot coffee beverage while the cold coffee beverage was named Kamikaze, where a mixture of wasabi for spiciness and lemon and pomegranate was used to create a sweet and sour flavour.

Joanna explained that the whole competition was an eye-opener for her. “It helped me realise that there are many career options culinary arts. This experience might have changed my perception about what I might intend to do in the future,” she said.
Natasha understands the need for exposure in the Hotel Management discipline that she received through various competitions. “Every time I participate in a competition, I am judged for my product and personality. I’ve received many offers to work in hotels. It is through competitions like this that people recognise you and your talent. It sure is a great feeling being recognised the general managers of leading hotels.”

The winners also attributed their success to the support of their coach, Daniel Chong Ka Leong who also was awarded with Best Coach of the Year. Daniel said, “The award is an encouragement to me, but truthfully the best coach in the eye of the participants should be their family, lecturers and friends. I am just a facilitator.” Daniel compliments Joanna’s humbleness and courage to step out of her comfort zone and Natasha’s hard work and commitment as a contributing factor to their achievements.

The Nestle Coffee Competition saw participants and coaches conducting their training at the Nestle headquarters to ensure commitment from both parties. Daniel said, “It was four months of hard work, juggling between lecture hours, student’s timetables and examinations. Two months was spent brainstorming, experimenting and perfecting the ingredients and concoction for the beverages. Our training restaurant was turned into an experiment laboratory in preparation for this competition.”

The competition was held for three days where the first two days were qualifying rounds and the third day was the grand finale. The judges this year were industry and technical experts including the International Chain Hotel general manager, president of MFBEA (Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association), hotel F&B directors and food and beverage experts. The participants were judged based on grooming, preparation, hygiene and safety, organisation and presentation, technical skills, measurements, creativity, taste/consistency/texture, appearance/colour and name of the creation.

57 Sunway ADTP students for Dean’s List

57 outstanding students from the Sunway University American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) made the Dean’s list recently. The August to December 2011 semester students produced 15 Summa Cum Laude achievers, 14 of whom scored 4.0 in their GPA with one who scored 3.97 GPA. The Summa Cum Laude which means “with highest honours” is a Latin phrase often used to recognise academic excellence at an undergraduate level.

Additionally, 24 students achieved the “Magna Cum Laude” (high honours) which is for 3.70 to 3.89 GPA along with 18 other students who qualified for Cum Laude (with honour) for being in the 3.50 to 3.69 range.

Deserving students have always been recognised for their outstanding academic achievements at the Dean’s List Honourees Ceremony for each cohort since 1990. This year’s awards were presented by Mr Juan Tavares, Director of International Admissions, Western Michigan University.

Kimberly Woo Sze Yen a Summa Cum Laude achiever with a GPA of 4.0 said, “I feel amazing and unspeakably glad to be one of the recipients of the Dean's Lists award. It is truly a remarkable achievement in my life. I'm really fortunate to be enrolled in the Sunway ADTP because it has been an unforgettable experience for me. The lecturers and students here are extremely nice and inspiring, the lessons are fun and being in ADTP is just insane in a very good and positive way.”

Chin Khai Yi, also a Summa Cum Laude achiever with a GPA of 4.0 said, “I felt happy and satisfied when I received the award, but I had to work really hard to achieve that. Nevertheless, the award serves as a motivation to my studies in ADTP. ADTP in Sunway University was a terrific experience. I took up subjects I never knew existed and learnt stuff the fun way. It was an out of the box learning experience and I'm glad I chose this course.”

Ng Jas Min said, “I thank God for such a blessing to be a recipient of a Dean's List award. This is the first time I obtained a 4.0 GPA in a long semester. The myriad of lectures, homework, tutorials and assignments combined altogether was definitely a challenge. Essentially, striking a balance between studies and leisure is my 'secret'. Sunway ADTP lecturers are undoubtedly helpful in class and also during consultation hours. I am forever grateful for their dedication and passion. Majoring in Aerospace Engineering, I have taken subjects beyond my field (i.e Introduction to Theatre) in Sunway ADTP which allow me to obtain a wholesome education and also enrich my entire ADTP experience. It has been such a thrilling and rewarding journey so far.

A public tweet-like environment

Recently the School of Computer Technology, Sunway University was pushed to the limelight when their team of lecturers won a silver medal at the Malaysia Technology Expo 2012 with their research project, “Zmedia-eMall Integrated Framework”. The team members were lecturers Assoc. Prof Dr Lim Tong Ming, Chin Teck Min, Choong Yoong Liang and Angela Lee. Undergraduate students from the B.Sc (Hons) Information Technology helped in the project.

The Zmedia project which utilizes peer-to-peer and media broadcasting technology allows people to send media and text messages through their mobiles and smartphones to LCDs creating a public tweet-like environment where the young and young-at-heart can share knowledge and information. This can be used in offices, buses and shopping malls.

The Head of the School of Computer Technology at Sunway University, Assoc. Professor Dr Lim Tong Ming said “An open academic environment was created when students had a chance to be exposed to the ZMedia project which was a real world application that utilized the latest technology and trends”.

Sunway University’s Diploma in Graphic and Multimedia Design and Diploma in Interior Design students were recently thrilled to exercise creativity beyond their classroom during a Visual Research Trip to Kuala Terengganu. The trip organised by Sunway University’s Department of Art and Design (DAD) required students to design a ‘new’ resort while integrating different expertise for interior design and incorporating a corporate identity design for the new resort. Students were also encouraged to identify surfaces, materials, structure, dynamics, shapes, and space among other things that might influence their perception of learning.

Syaza Abdur Rahman expressed how fortunate it was for her and her peers to be given a chance to learn outside the classroom and stay in a 5-star resort in Terengganu. She said, “It felt great to be able to work with an Interior Design student as I feel we’ve obtained a taste of what is to come when we enter the working environment. There were many inspiring things in Terengganu, especially the local handicrafts there. The unique wood carvings, the songket and batik were absolutely beautiful to look at.”

Arief Tajuddin said the first thing he gained from this trip was exposure and understanding the ideology of Terengganu. “I attained firsthand experience about their culture, food, architecture, furniture designs and traditions during the trip,” shared Arief. He said he was sketching as a recording method throughout the journey. He also paid attention to the craftsmanship of everything architectural and its traditional properties. He even conversed with the locals to get a clearer picture of Terengganu.

Maureen Opel, an international student from Africa said she got to see a different side of Malaysia through this trip. “The collaborative project was difficult as the ideas and inspiration had to satisfy both disciplines. However I managed to learn how to share and work with other people. The research method is good because we got first-hand experience of how things work. We were also exposed to see, feel and collect things that will inspire our creations. I was inspired by the hospitality of the people and the way things were colourful,” said Maureen.

Liu Zhang Yang, an International student from China said, “I’ve learned many things from this trip. I’ve seen many new elements and designs. I also took a liking of the handicraft factory which added to my knowledge. Another thing that impressed me was how brilliant the people in Terengganu were at building houses that are made of wood. These houses have been said to have last for more than a thousand years.” Elaine, a course-mate added, “I am truly inspired by the architecture of the Malay houses that were built without a single nail but merely wood joined together. Their building techniques are impressive and should be passed down generation by generation.”

Ang Tong Yin, Head of Department of Art and Design said, “The trip allowed room for the students to build an interdisciplinary team that extends beyond the classroom learning experience. It also gave local and international students a chance to understand the designs that are embedded within our Malaysian cultural context.”

A Harvard Collection in Sunway Campus

The Tun Hussein Onn Library (THOL), one of the largest private academic libraries in Malaysia located within Sunway Campus, saw the launch of a new collection titled, “A Harvard Collection”. This collection gives prominence to a distinct research collection that is aimed to support the teaching and research needs of the academic institution.

Initiated by Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Lin See-Yan, President of the Harvard Club of Malaysia on 22 September 2011, the Harvard Collection was established with a grant of RM 200,000 from the Board of Trustees of Yayasan Kelab Harvard Malaysia and RM 50,000 from the Yayasan Program Pertukaran Fellowship Perdana Menteri Malaysia.

The donations were made in parts, RM 75,000 in year 2010, RM 100,000 in year 2011 and another RM 25,000 which will be contributed this year. The monies will be used to upgrade the collection from time to time to provide a better range of publications to aid existing students with extra learning and reference materials. The Board of Trustees of Yayasan Kelab Harvard Malaysia will consider further contributions to upgrade the collections from year 2013 onwards.

The Harvard Collection comprises of Harvard University publications, resources, case studies and videos as well as publications of its illustrious alumni. Popular and influential titles include business books published by the Harvard Business School. The collection is equipped with 973 titles and 996 volumes that will continue to grow in the future. Sunway students and staff have benefited from the collection since April 2011 where a total loan of 472 items was made up to-date.

The Harvard Collection together with the Tun Hussein Onn Library will move to the new 12-story building which will be completed in 2014. THOL’s new home will occupy three levels and consist of a large 24-hour study area, group project rooms, group and individual study areas, a coffee breakout area, over 1,100 seats, instructional lab, audiovisual viewing facilities, and state-of-the-art technology to support the academic needs of the campus community.

Sunway University Business School champion PNB Quiz

Derick Yee, Sonia Lim and Yap Wan Li who represented the Sunway University Business School (SUBS) during the national level Investment Quiz Competition organised by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) made Sunway University proud when they championed the 2011 competition. The students did not falter even though they were perceived to be ‘newbies’ in the competition and displayed strength and character throughout. This is the first time in 11 years a private institution (IPTS) has won.

Three students were chosen to represent the university in the final round that was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang in December.The trio from Sunway University competed against 32 teams during the semi-finals and landed themselves in the finals against 3 other teams including Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia.

For their efforts the trio won a cheque worth RM 5,000 for Sunway University and they each received a RM1,000 equivalent of Amanah Saham Gemilang units. The students topped the quiz by getting the most number of diagonal and horizontal strikes and boxes during the competition.

The competition was part of PNB’s aim to promote awareness and educate university students on the relationship between risks and return in long-term investments. The depth of terminologies and current issues in investments and economic developments in university students was put to the test.

Yap Wan Li said, “It was a memorable and fruitful experience overall. We did not only learn about the technicality of financial knowledge but also developed strategies throughout the competition as we progressed.” The three students had to prepare for both their final examination and competition at the same time. They ensured they remained calm and collected throughout the competition.

Yap shared, “Winning the game was secondary while enjoying the whole process was a priority. It was this mindset which pulled us through the semi-finals that later contributed to us winning the competition. Knowledge is essential, but skills like teamwork and strategising your game is equally important too.”

Yap added, “It was a progressive feeling of excitement as we could see that we were leading the competition judging by the total scores collected along the way. However, we could not help but feel a deep sense of pride when we were announced champions of the PNB competition." We are glad to have made our university proud by being the first private university which has won the competition since it was first held.”

Role model women inspire a sweet act from Chermaine

After weeks of talking to and listening to 5 inspirational Malaysian philanthropic women as the host of NTV 7’s SK-11 Miracle Makers, Chermaine Poo decided that she would do her part for charity as well – by baking cupcakes to raise funds for a charitable organisation of her choice. Poo became the highlight in the show she was hosting when she challenged herself to bake 1,000 cupcakes and to sell them, in a charity drive named “Chermaine’s Cupcake Charity”.

The TV actress and chartered accountant baked the cupcakes single-handedly, only enlisting the help of her celebrity acquaintances and close friends to pack the cupcakes, all done within a span of two days. Within that time, Poo had to sell the beautiful cupcakes, packed in boxes of 6 starting at RM50 each, at Sunway Pyramid.

One of the first people she approached was Elizabeth Lee, the Executive Director of Sunway Education Group, a person she got to know as an ACCA student of Sunway College. To her delight, Lee informed Poo that Sunway University would donate RM5,000 towards her cupcake charity drive.

On her way to deliver the cupcakes to Sunway Pyramid, Poo made a special delivery of the cupcakes in a white Lotus sports car, at Sunway University. The delicious cupcakes were distributed to students and staff at the Sunway campus.

Poo admitted it was hard work. The entire process had to be planned out carefully as she could not afford to lose any time. The long hours of baking were very tiring and the pressure to meet the target on time was tremendous.

“I kept reminding myself that my five mentors did exactly that – they kept on doing it and did not give up. I thank God for the strength and perseverance, and my family and friends for their encouragement and support, and NTV 7 and SK-11 for giving me the opportunity and platform to launch my charity drive” said Poo.

Poo sold the rest of the cupcakes at Sunway Pyramid’s main concourse raising a total of RM18,000 for Shelter Home for Children, Petaling Jaya, proving without a doubt that she could make her own miracle project.

A spellbinding event for the environment

The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management (SHTLM), Sunway University organised a charity dinner recently to raise funds and awareness for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia as part of the B.Sc (Hons) International Hospitality Management students’ assignment. The dinner was held at SHTLM’s training restaurant and supported by the newly renovated kitchen which was done in accordance with Le Cordon Bleu’s specifications.

Furthermore, the theme of this event was inspired by the musical film, Burlesque (2010) which was directed by Steven Antin and starred Christina Aguilera and Cher. Therefore, to truly bring out the essence of the theme, Viva Vertical, which specialises in pole dancing, agreed to perform for the event on a goodwill basis. In addition, Ryan de Alwis from MIX FM was also invited to emcee for that night.

Among the guests who were present, were the Executive Director of Sunway Education Group, Ms. Elizabeth Lee, and Youth Outreach Executive from WWF Malaysia, Mr. Brandon Liu. Ms. Anisha Chai, the Head of SHTLM said, “It is a meaningful activity as it was not only fulfilling the academic requirements but it was a community responsibility project as well.”

This event was entirely planned and executed by a team of 15 students under the supervision of the Head of Food and Beverage, Mr. Daniel Chong. He said, ”This event facilitates students to put operation management theories into practice, from conceptualisation to execution.”

“A Spellbound Enchanted Evening with Wonderful Performances”, was the tagline of this dinner and it was beyond doubt achieved by this group of students as each of the guests left with a wide smile on their faces. Besides the breathtaking performances by Viva Vertical, guests were also entertained by the hostess, who dressed identical to a character of the film.

A total of RM4,000 was channelled to WWF Malaysia from the event. The donations were collected from numerous companies and individuals. Besides that, merchandise sponsored by a few companies was used as door gifts and lucky draw prizes. “Thank you to the students and all the good-hearted people who contributed” said Liu.

Themed dinners like this are held mostly during the month of July and November every year, during the long semester periods which allow sufficient time for the students to plan, organise and execute these dinners successfully.

Sunway Cricket Team to play Malaysian National Cricket Team Cricket

The dynamic talent of the Sunway Cricket team was proven when they were recently handpicked by the management of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) to play in a series of matches against the Malaysian National Cricket team. Sunway’s Cricket team who participated in various tournaments organised by numerous State Cricket Associations had advanced into the finals of each tournament. The Chairman of the MCA was impressed by Sunway’s track record for Year 2011 and thus offered them an opportunity to partake in a five match series with the national team in preparation for their upcoming 2012 ICC World Cricket League Division Five tournament that will take place in Singapore in February.

The Sunway team is made up of a number of international students who are pursuing their studies in Sunway. They come from countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India. The first match of five in the series started at the home of the Malaysian National Cricket team, Kinrara Cricket Academy, Kinrara Oval in Puchong recently. The Sunway players performed tremendously well against the illustrious opposition despite playing with their second squad. These students exercised time management skills as they were busy training for the match and preparing for their exams. Although the team came up short, Sunway’s bowler Sohail Khan took 3 Malaysian wickets in the finals contributing to Sunway scoring 6 for the match.

Team Captain and American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) student, Ziaul Alam Rony said, “The experience playing against the Malaysian National Team was amazing. I did not have my first squad for the match but we tried our best to play decent cricket against them and put up a good fight.”
Rony conceded that there are some things to work on if Sunway defeats Malaysia in the upcoming games. “In my opinion, our bowlers bowled a good line and the fielding was superb, however we lacked strategy and confidence in batting. We hope to improve once the full squad returns in January next year. I think we will make a positive comeback in the upcoming matches.”

Catharsis, Purging of Emotions by Sunway ADTP students

A full house and uproar of laughter filled the auditorium as students from the class of THEA 1000 purged their emotions during the production of Catharsis, Purging of Emotions. The 5 short plays was each unique, entertaining and witty, played by the students of the Sunway American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP).

The production held at Sunway University started with a play titled ‘The Unruly Bank Customer’, written and directed by Danny Voon Seng Hong. Danny wanted to create a sense of familiarity to everyone by placing an unruly bank customer with a thick Malaysian accent against a prim and proper service banker. The tendency for both of them to misunderstand each other created a chaos.

The knee-slapping laughter that accompanied the first play echoed as the audience embraced themselves for a melodramatic change of emotions through the second play titled, “My Sunshine Away” directed by Tan You Ken and Daryl Premkumar. The play is a heart-warming tale about a sibling’s love for her handicapped brother who in turn is seeking autonomy in life.

Tan You Ken and Daryl Premkumar said, “It was a challenge directing a more serious play as it was important to evoke an emotional side to the audience. The depth of the story was great and we were hoping the audience would understand the storyline.”

The mood was uplifted once again with both the plays titled ‘Language Barrier’ directed by Jack Ling Jin Yew and “Thank God it’s…” directed by Nancy Yong Wen Shi and Hayden Cheanglai Yee. Both plays were written by Ronnie Shieu.

Language barrier saw the class from the popular British comedy titled “Mind Your Language” together with their teacher, Mr Brown and school principal, Ms Courtney arrested for shoplifting. Jack said, “I wanted to produce something funny and it took a lot of movies, newspapers, life experience as well as the actor’s help to produce this play.”

‘Thank God it’s..’ saw 3 friends who possess 3 contrasting characteristics dining in a prestigious restaurant. Little did they know they would be greeted by a waiter with an attitude, making the four a deadly combination for the perfectly calm night. Nancy and Hayden shared, “We had fun with each idea and improvised the play along the way. We were very proud of our actors who took on the characters well.” Nancy was able to share stage experiences with the actors as she has been involved in other productions.

Celinederella written and directed by Nur Hazlin and Shavin Nair is a modern musical tale of a woman who tries to stay strong and happy while enduring the abuse of her stepsister. “We wanted Celinederella to deal with her own problems in order to showcase autonomy. We wanted to make it as real as possible”, said the directors.

Catharsis, a Purging of Emotions is a collaborative effort of all the students of THEA 1000 who come from various majors in the ADTP such as Business, Mass Communication, Engineering and Aviation. Students invested their time, energy and skills into making this production a huge success. Apart from the original scripts, directing and starring in this production, they were responsible for publicising, producing, sound engineering, stage management and other essential areas.

Yu Chu Vang, a student from China who played Juan in Language Barrier said, “It was challenging for me as a foreigner to put on a Spanish accent while battling to communicate in simple English. However, I practiced by speaking frequently with my friends. I also improved my command of English. I enjoyed the experience as it gave me an opportunity to express myself.”

Chin Khai Yi, an actor in An Unruly Bank Customer and Language Barrier said, “I picked up effeminate traits from movies and incorporated them in my roles. I watched a lot of Singaporean and Malaysian movies to pick up the accent and lingo.” Chin believed the production was an experience on its own as one learns how to respond to certain people, experiences and interactions throughout the production. He added, “I believe everyone played their part in making this production a success including the people from behind the scenes. Special mention of Miss Malissa Mahmud, Lecturer of ADTP and dramaturge for this production as without her this play would not have happened”.

Clean sweep for Sunway’s shining star

19 year-old Katrina Ann Abdul Hadi is the proud owner of five glittering gold medals having swept all the synchronised swimming events at the 26th SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia this year. Katrina and her team mates, having already delivered golds in the free duet, technical duet, free team and technical team events, were once again at their dazzling best, when they produced a consistent and energetic performance to overwhelm the spectators and judges in the fifth and final event, the free team combination. Performing to the song ‘Rio de Janeiro’, the team scored 75.363 points to easily win another gold medal.

A delighted Katrina could hardly contain her excitement after helping Malaysia to make a spectacular medal tally. “I came with only a three-gold target in mind and I’ve won five – that’s a real bonus. Right now my priority is to try and qualify for the London Olympics next year but it won’t be easy. My personal target is the 2016 Olympics and, hopefully, I’ll continue swimming until then,” said Katrina, a student of the Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) student at Sunway College.

An all rounder, Katrina has also done well outside the pool having achieved 4 A’s in her CIMP examinations, so far. She will be an Ontario Scholar at her coming graduation.

Katrina did her SPM at the Bukit Jalil Sports School. She was a gymnast from the age of 5 years before switching to synchronized swimming at the age of 12. Her demanding training schedule normally begins at 6.30 am till 9.45 am followed by classes and then returning back to the pool at 3 pm before finishing at 7.30 pm. When there is night training, she is back in the pool from 8.30 pm till 10 pm. Her younger sister Farah Ann is a gymnast.

Sunway University Business School steps into Hollywood

Sunway University Business School (SUBS) recently had a ball of time as they celebrated the grand annual ball held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. 450 VIP guests, lecturers and students who were dressed in their finest suites and gowns were greeted by the SUBS Students Concilium committee at the Hollywood Walk of Fame themed grand ball.

Hosted by Siva Sanmugan and Fadwa Al-Omar, the event kicked off with an enthralling Burlesque performance by the Student Concilium members followed by an inspiring speech by Associate Professor Dr Foo Yin Fah, Head of the SUBS and the Student Concilium President, June Lum.

While the night was devoted to fun and games, SUBS also paid recognition to students who displayed outstanding academic performance in their subjects. Adrian Ang Tze Ern and Michelle Soo Mei Cheng emerged top scorers for Advanced Management Accounting and Business Ethics and Social Responsibility and were rewarded with a book prize award by Ms Ho Li Li from CIMA Malaysia. Koo Yan Jing and Shalene Kalyanasundaram both took home the best subject award for Business Strategy and Strategic Financial Management presented by Mr Ramesh Rajaratnam Chairman of ICAEW Malaysia Alumni while Amritha Kaur A/P Jagjit Singh won the best subject award for Financial and Corporate Reporting 1 presented by Ms Christina Foo, a Member CPA Australia Advisory Council. Deric Yee Seng Kit and Lee Ker Ching were top scorers for Investment Management and Corporate Finance respectively who received their award from Mr Siew Chin Kiang Member ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee while Ms Chai Sing Ru who was awarded the best recipient for Audit and Assurance received her award from Mr Siew Chin Kiang Partner KPMG.

The night was full of laughter as students also witnessed a chirpy side to the lecturers who put on a sketch dressed as superheroes and villains. The activities that evening included lucky draws, games and performances by students after a 7 course scrumptious dinner. Students also stood a chance to win an Ipad 2, LCD television, home theatre system, a canon printer and camera and others.
