Have you ever wondered how Google ranks tweets?  I know I have.  Is it some complex algorithm just like regular search criteria?  Well WebProNews tried to crack the Google code and give us some answers to the Twitter question…here’s the story…

It’s ok to say "no" to Twitter if that’s your thing. There’s a chance that it just doesn’t fit into your strategy or help you achieve your goals. That’s cool. However, if it is your thing, you may be interested in how Google ranks tweets. That is if search marketing is your thing.

Google and Microsoft almost simultaneously announced deals with Twitter a few months back, that would give the companies access to tweets in real-time to fuel their respective search engines’ real-time results. Microsoft immediately launched their version, but it was separate from the regular Bing search engine. Google waited a while, but eventually started incorporating real-time results right into regular Google SERPs (including not only tweets, but various other sources).

After the Twitter deals were announced, Bing came out and said, "If someone has a lot of followers, his/her Tweet may get ranked higher. If a tweet is exactly the same as other Tweets, it will get ranked lower."

Google was not as vocal about how it would rank tweets and other real-time results, but the company has now shed a bit of light on that via an interview with MIT’s Technology Review. David Talbot interviewed Google "Fellow" Amit Singhal, who has led development of real-time search at the company. According to him, Google also ranks tweets by followers to an extent, but it’s not just about how many followers you get. It’s about how reputable those followers are.

Singhal likens the system to the well-known Google system of link popularity. Getting good links from reputable sources helps your content in Google, so having followers with that some kind of authority theoretically helps your tweets rank in Google’s real-time search.

"One user following another in social media is analogous to one page linking to another on the Web. Both are a form of recommendation,& fef quot; Singhal says. "As high-quality pages link to another page on the Web, the quality of the linked-to page goes up. Likewise, in social media, as established users follow another user, the quality of the followed user goes up as well."

But that’s only one factor.

Do you commonly use hashtags in your tweets? If your goal is to rank in Google’s real-time search index, you may want to cut down on that practice, because according to Singhal, that is a big red flag for a lower quality tweet. This seems to be part of Google’s spam control strategy.

Another noteworthy excerpt from the interview:

Another problem: how, if someone is searching for "Obama," to sift through White House press tweets and thousands of others to find the most timely and topical information. Google scans tweets to find the "signal in the noise," he says. Such a "signal" might include a new onslaught of tweets and other blogs that mention "Cambridge police" or "Harry Reid" near mentions of "Obama." By looking out for such signals, Google is able to furnish real-time hits that contain the freshest subject matter even for very common search terms.

Well, we certainly know more about Google’s strategy for tweet ranking now, but there are still plenty of questions about it. What is Google’s stance is on Ghost Tweeting? Are Google’s ranking factors a good reason to create and follow more Twitter lists in hopes for gaining more reputable industry followers?

The factors mentioned aren’t the only ones Google employs. It’s not like Google is going to tell us everything. It also helps to keep in mind that real-time search spans far beyond just tweets. Still, Twitter is clearly a big part of it, and even the significance of tweets themselves will evolve in time.

Google says it hopes to factor in geo-location data (with regards to tweets) into the real-time search results at some point. Google and Twitter engineers frequently collaborate on  real-time search, which Google itself says is evolving.

By the way, it stands to reason that Google’s strategy for ranking tweets probably shares similarities for how it ranks content from other sources drawn from for real-time search.

The all new mobile version of the ever popular FireFox – also known as Fennec – is almost ready to launch. Indeed, a Mozilla exec was recently quoted as saying that a release could be "days away," so it’s possible that the new mobile browser will appear in time for some tech-inclined individuals to play with it on New Year’s Eve or even Christmas.

Word of this short-term goal comes via the BBC from Jay Sullivan, who’s Mozilla’s vice president of mobile. Apparently Fennec’s going through a last phase of testing, and, barring any "showstoppers," will be available quite soon.

The catch relates to compatibility, meaning this rollout won’t put Fennec in everyone’s hands. Owners of Nokia’s N900 phones will be the first to get their hands on the mobile version of Firefox. Then, as the BBC reported, "The organisation is also developing versions for Microsoft’s Windows mobile and Google’s Android operating system."  Read the rest here!

Finding the right keyword is always a bit challenging, but having a good keyword research tool can help to generate keywords in the most effective way possible.  This can help you strategically increase traffic to your website or blog from the search engines.

One major aspect of search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of creating content using the exact keyword or keyword phrases that people are using to generate keywords. While there are certainly other factors involved in ranking well at the search engines, matching the on-page criteria is the first step in ensuring your visibility. Consistent cherry picking of long tail keywords over time is one of the easiest ways to boost traffic. Here are four free  keyword research tools that are popular because they all work well to generate keywords.

1. Spacky.com

Spacky, funny name, but is an awesome free keyword search estimator tool to generate keywords. It can tell you what exact terms were queried at the major search engines in the previous month and how many searches were conducted. The way it works is you enter a keyword or keyword phrase into the search box. The estimated monthly search volume results show how many people searched for that exact keyword or phrase in the previous month. The results also include keywords and phrases related to that theme and it’s common to find gems you hadn’t thought of.

When it comes to search engine optimization, it’s amazing how two very similar keyword phrases can have two very different effects on your blog or website’s traffic. It’s nice to know ahead of time exactly what popular keywords your audience is using to search with, and then build content around them to attract the search engines. In addition to knowing what people are searching for, it’s also important to know how many results there were for each query. There’s no sense getting involved in a saturated supply market when so much possibility exists online if you’re willing to do some research.  The tricky part is to find a keyword that has some popularity, but not so much, and have the right syntax so you can use it to write with naturally.  A lot of people will search for "dog bark loud," but it is hard to write that way.  Spacky helps to generate keywords that are truly useable.

A word of caution: It’s easy to become excited with the results when you see how many people searched for your idea or keyword last month. However, your data is incomplete. While Spacky is a great tool, it does not measure the number of search engine results for each keyword, i.e. your competition. Without knowing the current state of supply, it’s impossible to estimate a keyword’s potential popularity and/or profitability.

2. Wordtracker

Wordtracker’s free keyword suggestion tool is a very popular choice. I find it to be especially helpful with ’seed words’ to generate keywords.  Seed words like ‘how to’, ‘cure for’, and ‘buy’, all work well to drill down, and get some ideas for new sites, articles, and products.  If you are looking for a more powerful keyword research tool, check out their monthly subscription option, which includes access to more data and other options. 

On their site, they have also included a case study in the form of a FREE PDF, created by some leading SEO expert, to help you see how to use Wordtracker.  To find out, they created a story around Virginia Veg, a fictional company that wants to sell vegetarian dog food online. 3. Google AdWords Free Keyword Tool

Google has developed this free online keyword research tool to analyze keyword demand in support of the Google AdWords program. It allows you not only to save your searches to a csv or text file, but also seamlessly integrate your top keywords into an AdWords marketing campaign.

4.  Market Samurai

Market Samurai, probably the most exotic of the four, is a powerful tool for keyword research.  It does especially well when searching for those hidden keywords and niche building ideas, that others might have missed.  There is a free version for the product, but if you want to drill your keywords down in greater depth, the paid version offers even more valuable information such as SEO competition, rank checking, and finding content.

All four keyword research tools can help in searching for just the right keyword.  If I had to pick just one tool, I still would go for the Google Adwords tool.  I still think it is the best for realtime keyword research that can aid in the most in depth analysis of your keyword needs.  I especially like a couple of features with the Google tool.  You can limit the search to just include the words that you are most interested in, rather than just spinning a bunch of extra words.  The other feature that helps me is the CPC (cost per click).  I like knowing this to find out the real competition for my keyword.

Finding the right keyword is a little like making a really good Chili.  A good Chili will have just enough spice, not too sweet, not too tangy, not too greasy, not too frilly.  So too is a good keyword.  It needs to have enough searches for demand, but not too much.   Having the right keyword tool can really help to cook up just the right killer keyword.  Keyword research might seem difficult to some, but I find it exciting.  I think it is fun to explore all of the research to unleash all of the possibilites.

In order to find those golden gems, or as they are sometimes referred to, low hanging fruit, you cannot skip the keyword research step.

Take a look at the column on the right that I’ve circled. It’s a good rule of thumb to focus on finding keywords with a minimum of 1500 searches monthly.

Finding relevant keywords is really the art of SEO. Sometimes you can strike a gold mine where no one else is working. 

 Get Backlinks To Your Website…Easier said than done, right?

A back link is a link from another website to yours. The search engines views your site more important when you have a link that directs readers to your site. The more of those links from other people’s site to yours, the better your webpage is viewed as important to the search engines. Of course, there are other factors like existing traffic, etc. But you have to start somewhere to get that traffic.

There are 2 things to remember when getting those links. First, a reciprocal link, which is when both owners of the websites give a link to each other’s pages are good. They add the amount of links on the internet to your site. But if you get a one way link, which means you don’t give a link back to the other owner’s site, they are worth more than reciprocal links to the search engines’ bots. This is because of the owner committing to placing a link on his/her website without anything in return. Then you are perceived has having higher value.

Secondly, relevancy is very important. If you have a homepage selling pillows and your link is on a site selling farm equipment, then that link is not very relevant. The bot won’t view that link as much as your link on a pillow store’s site.

You are probably thinking: ‘Easier said than done.’ Right? Who would give you a link and expect nothing in return, even less a relevant link. You may be able to convince a few people, but not enough to make a he impact on your ranking.

Here are 5 ways to increase the amount of one way backlinks to your site and increase your quality free links:

1.One method that has been proven over and over again is article marketing. This is a well written article of about 400 to 800 words relevant to your website and the products you sell. So if we use that earlier example with the pillows, you may want to write about the different pillows, what are benefits of having great quality pillows, etc. At the end of your articles, you add your link and information to your website.

Once you have written 1000 your article, simply post it on relevant article directories. Do a search for ‘article directory’. You will find a few hundred thousand results. Send your articles to as many directories as you can. The more you send, the more people view your articles and the more clicks to your site you will receive.

2.Start a blog about your business and keep it active. In other words, write posts (articles) to your blog as often as possible. Every second day is good, but every day is best. And submit your blog to blog directories. Again, do a search, but this time for ‘blog directories’. Another few hundred thousand results will be found.

3.Post comments to other people’s blogs. Find blogs that are relevant to yours. The best way is to do a search with your keywords and add blog after, ‘keywords+blog’. Read the blog and write good quality comments on their blogs with your link to your pages.

4.Make posts on forums. This is basically the same as blog comments, except that you give advice to questions asked in forums.

5.Give testimonials to products you have purchased. Don’t write a full article here, just 2-3 lines explaining why you like the product you have bought.

These are all great ways to receive one way links to your site without having to convince anyone to give them to you. And these one way backlinks are your best quality fine links to your website.
