Let's start with our best small family SUV, which is the Honda CR-V.

This is our top rated compact SUV. But it has a lot of features that you want when you're looking for the Best family SUV, you know, large back seat with plenty of space for putting in even rear-facing car seats, tons of cargo space.

You fold down that backseat, you get 76 cubic feet of cargo. Which is massive. I mean, we did the math. That's like 25 TSA carry-on packages.

It really shows the benefits of the CR-V's interior. And it's not just the cargo capacity, too. It's how you can configure it.

The center console has some really neat configurations with a sliding tray and a couple other things going on there.

And the load floor in the trunk can be adjusted for height, too, depending on what you're carrying.

Couple of other SUVs have that as well, but no one really blends it as nicely as the Honda does.

And for 2020, they've improved the base trim. You now get the Honda Sensing safety suite with Forward Collision Avoidance, Lane Keep Assist, things like that.

That's standard across the whole range. You get the better engine. The 1.5 liter is now standard across the whole range as well.

They dropped the base engine, which is always the one we were like, eh, you can probably just skip that one and move up to the-- to the next step.

But the CR-V's really smart for a lot of families. And, you know, for next year, there'll be a hybrid as well.

And we like Honda's hybrid powertrain as one o. In the other vehicles, we've driven it. So we're looking forward to trying this one out.

Best Large Family SUV: Kia Telluride

Let's move up to our best large family SUV, which is the Kia Telluride.

This is our top rated mid-size three-row overall. And there's a reason for that,It's a really well done SUV on a lot of all the fronts, essentially.

The interior space, again, very large, comfortable seats, easy to access seats.

But really, what sets the Kia apart is the value. This is a near premium experience at not, like, a premium price point.

If you get this in high trims, it's near luxury for the same money, sometimes even a little bit less than you'd spend, for the Best Family SUV from a different brand.

V6 power is adequate, totally fine. You do get a 5,000 pound tow rating, which is strong amongst.

I'd say mid-pack maybe amongst this level of Best Family SUV. But in combination with the rest of the Telluride's attributes, it makes for a really robust package.

You've got good phone integration. The power outlets are smart.

The power outlet design is nice. For the second row, the charge ports are in the back of the front row seats.

So the kids can reach them more easily without having to sort of lean out of their seat belts to try and get down to the back of the center console where a lot of other SUVs put their power ports.

Overall, the Telluride is a really smart and one of the Best Family SUV's with a lot of nice things going for it.

We like the Telluride because of its near premium look and feel, but let's actually talk about premium SUVs now.

Best Small Luxury SUV: Volvo XC60

Our best small luxury SUV is the Volvo XC60. This is our top pick for families. It is not our top pick overall in the segment. That goes to the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

But we decided to go with the Volvo when it came to picking something specifically for families.

What the Volvo does that few other SUVs advertise as successfully, or offer as much as well.

The Volvo delivers some really attention to family-specific options, specifically like having the available second row booster seats in both like heated and not configurations.

It's a really nice little touch. And there's a couple other accessories, too, you can option when you get the Volvo XC60 that are smart, like having a kick protector on the back of the seat back.

So, you know, you don't get those seats, those beautifully tailored seats, all scuffed up in your premium luxury SUV.

So overall, the XC60's a solid premium luxury SUV from its attention to design to the tech and interior features.

I mean, you do get solid phone integration. You do get the-- you get the power ports, and you get a lot of safety stuff, too.

Volvo still really heavily pushes that reputation for safety they built the brand on. And that's something they still really care about.

There's a lot of trim levels with the XC60. We recommend the T6 specifically because the base engine feels a little overworked.

And the hybrid at the top end doesn't feel that great when you roll on the gas pedal. But so, choose the T6. That one really works.

The Volvo XC60, when you option it correctly, is a really solid vehicle for the family.

Our best family truck is the Ram 1500. The Ram delivers all these things.

I mean, I'm sure you can get the Tradesman with the rubber floor mats and probably a bench seat and all that in a single cab.

But when you option the Ram upright, it really becomes a pleasant family sedan.

That mega cab configuration, the second row is huge. The seat can recline, so slightly older kids can make themselves comfortable.

The large back seat area means you can fit car seats really easily, especially like the really bulky reverse-facing ones.

Then there's a ton of interior storage, too. The center console, it's almost Honda-like with how much space and storage you have in there.

You have under floor storage, where who knows what'll end up there over the life of the vehicle with families.

And you also have the technology features. There's the Wi-Fi hotspot available. There's tons of charging ports.

The coil spring rear suspension really sets the Ram apart in terms of ride quality because it's so comfortable when there's nothing in the bed.

Our top pick for a family sedan goes to the Honda Accord. Full disclosure, when my wife and I decided we were going to start a family, this is the car we bought.

I would love it if Honda had paid me to take one of these cars. Instead, I gave them money to able to say this.

The Accord has been our favorite midsize sedan overall, and especially for families, because it gives the thing that we really value for family vehicles, which is that interior space and trunk space.

This is like the CR-V, and we've already mentioned for SUVs. There's a lot of space in here and especially in the trunk.

You're not going to have a problem fitting child seats in the back. You're not going to have a problem throwing a stroller into the trunk.

But you also get something for you, for the driver. I mean, this is a refined, nice car. I mean, this is a pleasant thing to drive day to day.

From the engine options, to the interior space, to the tech and all that stuff, the Accord really delivers a robust set of features for the modern family, for everybody inside the car, too.

Top Luxury Car: Mercedes-Benz E-Class

And now, if you guys would pay me a little more, I could step up to our top rated luxury car pick: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Which we have to give special mention to because the E-Class is available in both a sedan and a station wagon.

The sedan is like one of our favorite midsize luxury sedans, of course, but the wagon is just cool.

I mean, it's a good-looking wagon that happens to be a Mercedes as well. I love this thing.

But stepping up to the E-Class gets you more than just luxury, right? There are actually features here that families are going to appreciate.

You get 3-zone climate control, which is nice to have in a car. It's not something you see really in mainstream cars certainly.

Also get technology features, like their Traffic Jam Assist which is available, which is really nice. If you're a parent, and you're stuck in traffic, it'll just help you deal with that if your kids are demanding your attention.

It slows you down to zero and then will resume acceleration with the traffic again.

But you still should be paying attention. But I can imagine what happens when kids are back there yelling and screaming at you.

Overall, the E-Class is still a really nice and top rated luxury car that happens to have a lot of family features, especially in the wagon trim.

Best Luxury Car: Mercedes E 63 S Wagon

We also need to call out, though, if you want to be the raddest parents on the block, you need to get the AMG E 63 S wagon.

Because nothing says "cool parents" like a 600 horsepower station wagon with seat massagers and a drift mode.

It's the only car that comes from a factory with a call to Child Protective Services for endangerment.

The E 63 wagon is of course an enthusiast car. But we've saved the most serious enthusiast cars for last, and that is minivans.

Minivans get used for their intended purposes more than any other car out there, any other vehicle out there.

E 63 wagon can do a quarter mile in 11 seconds, right, let's say. A truck, that Ram, can tow a gazillion pounds.

Best Family Minivan: Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey remains a very good minivan, our top rated minivan. And a lot of that has to do with how good it is for families, the purpose for which it was intended.

You mentioned the vacuum cleaner, of course. That's a nice feature. A lot of people love that.

Also you get things in certain trims, like the infrared Camera. So you can see what's going on in the backseat even when it's dark, and you get the intercom system.

Some of it's a little gimmicky, but they're nice effort. They're nice gestures that show that Honda is paying attention to family use.

We also like the lateral sliding second row seats, which make ingress and egress from the third row easier.

Of course that means you can't stow the second row. But again, we're talking about families, not for like pure cargo hauling needs for the van, because the van's about hauling people.

The Odyssey also has a strong V6 engine that we like quite a bit. It's genuinely pleasing to drive, although we don't often think about drivability in minivans.

But when it's good, it's more of a bonus for a minivan.

The one sticking point for the Odyssey here in this segment might be pricing.

But considering all the features and how good this is as a family vehicle, we tend to think it's worth it.

What Happened To The Hummer H2

In the early 1990s, one of Hollywood's biggest action stars pestered a U.S. defense contractor to sell him a truck the American military had famously used in a war with Iraq.

And so America got the Hummer. The angular, militaristic go anywhere truck became an emblem of 1990s pop culture, a coveted status symbol sought by celebrities.

And a sometimes mocked and vilified example of just how far America's newfound love for sport utility vehicles had gone.

Part 2: What Happened To The Hummer H2

The Hummer was huge, brash and often brightly colored, and it became a favorite choice for adventurous buyers who didn't mind attracting attention.

It was gone. As parent company General Motors collapsed into bankruptcy.

I would say there probably isn't many more iconic vehicles of this century than the Hummer. I would put like the Hummer, the Prius, the Beatle.

And I would say they all existed for a time and were so incredibly popular and their popularity has faded for all of them.

But I mean, Hummer was so ubiquitous at one point in terms of representing that overly emasculated, aggressive, almost stereotype.

Hummer had a brief life spanning just under two decades, but it made a lasting impression.

Why The Hummer Disappeared From America

- Hummer's History

This Hummer H2 that would come to be called a Hummer actually began as the U.S. military's High Mobility Multi-purposed Wheeled Vehicle.

The name's cumbersome acronym H M M W V landed the truck with its nickname Humvee. It was first developed in 1981 by U.S. defense contractor AM General.

Also It was most notably used in the first Gulf War, but the kind seen on roads and highways later on came about because as the story goes.

Arnold Schwarzenegger saw a convoy of Hummers in Oregon while filming a movie and decided he had to have one.

Upon seeing them, he would later say he could see himself driving the vehicle in the mountains and in the desert.

Schwarzenegger reportedly lobbied AM general repeatedly for one of the vehicles.

First, he demanded one of the same Humvees the company had sold to the military, but he was refused since the truck was not street legal.

Then he began asking AM general to make a civilian version.

He even flew out to the company's headquarters in South Bend, Indiana, to make his case.

The contractor eventually created a civilian version in 1992 and named it the Hummer.

Schwarzenegger was there for the unveiling of the vehicle and drove one of the first specimens off the assembly line.

Part 2: Why The Hummer Disappeared

By many measurements, the Hummer outdid every other passenger vehicle on the market. It had a full 16 inches of ground clearance.

That's over nine inches more than the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

It was also seven feet wide, almost as wide as the biggest street legal semitrucks, making it stable and resistant to rollover, despite its height.

The civilian version came with a more comfortable cabin geared for cruising and commuting rather than combat.

But the truck did retain some of the features found in the original version. There's a vehicle that was extremely capable of going anywhere off road.

So even if most owners never actually took it off the pavement, the Hummer H2 did have the credibility behind it.

Owners of the vehicle knew that it could go really far off road if they so desired.

And the capability of that Hummer H2 was part of its credibility. And the Hummer was a success for a while.

What Happened To The Hummer H2

General Motors Takes Over - GM Company

GM bought the brand in 1999 and expanded the lineup with progressively smaller models called the H2 and H3.

By 2002, General Motors was launching the Hummer brand in a big way with the H2, which was a smaller version of the smaller, more consumer friendly version of the H1 that was heavily based on GM pickup.

Heavy duty pickup mechanicals. And the timing of it was sort of fortuitous for General Motors because the second Gulf War was starting and all over the news, all you saw were military Humvees storming into Iraq.

And right about that time, General Motors launched the H2.

So it was able to capitalize on it was able to capitalize on current events at the time.

It also made it a very polarizing vehicle because Americans were either in support of the war or they were really, really against it.

Eventually, every celebrity seemed to have one. Schwarzenegger himself owned at least seven at one point.

Heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson had 6. At its peak in 2006, Americans bought more than 71,000 Hummers.

The Hummer H2 was an oddity in the marketplace, huge, blunt and aggressive.

But that appears to be part of what people liked about it.

Hummer was a vehicle that absolutely could not be ignored.

The fact that there were so many of them that were painted bright yellow sort of spoke volumes about the fact that this is the view that people really want to be seen in.

I mean, people generally chose pretty extroverted colors to go with this Hummer H2.

You know, the vehicle was, of course, extremely often capable, but there were a relatively small number of people who actually use it for that purpose.

Part 2: General Motors Takes Over

Really, it was a fashion statement. For some people was even a political statement.

And most of all, it was a vehicle that vote for those who were really into the product.

Hummer was something that they really wanted to show off and be seen in.

However, there was also backlash against the truck, which critics viewed as an obnoxious gas guzzler.

The original Hummer H1 got about 10 miles per gallon, the smallest of the lineup, the H3 got 14 miles per gallon with an automatic transmission in the 2010 model year.

To activists and other critics, the Hummer H2 became a symbol of excess and the American addiction to fuel at a time when prices were beginning to climb and the country was fighting wars in the oil rich Middle East.

Also In one high profile case, a dealership in West Covina, California, was vandalized, including 20 Hummers valued at about $50000 each.

The perpetrators spray painted messages on several of the damaged trucks, including Gross polluter and Fat, lazy Americans.

Apart from the environmental backlash. Rising fuel prices and a grueling recession spoiled America's taste for big vehicles.

Hummer sales fell from their 2006 high to 55,986 in 2007, 27,485 in 2008.

And just 9,046 in 2009. Unfortunately for Hummer, as the decade progressed, after a decade progressed, fuel prices went haywire in 2008.

All the sudden, it made the Hummer look very unfashionable because he was a vehicle that got maybe 10 miles a gallon when gas prices were shooting up to near about $4 a gallon across the country.

The Hummer did introduce a smaller multi-culti H3, but by that time, I think that damn, that's pretty much already done.

What Happened To The Hummer H2

The Future of Hummer

To make matters worse, General Motors itself had collapsed, the largest U.S. automaker filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

GM put several of its brands to the axe, including Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saab and Hummer.

I think for for those times when General Motors was looking at what they should do as they were going through bankruptcy, moving forward, Hummer was a brand that they had to unload.

Even if you look at what their pickup truck sales were at the time, those had just fallen off the cliff as well.

Hummer was clear that Americans are not interested in these larger vehicles. All of the things that had made it appealing.

It's big, loud, brash attitude were now liabilities. GM would later try to sell the brand to Chinese investors, but that deal fell through.

The strange thing is that as prices have fallen from an all time high set in 2008 and as the U.S. has pulled out of the recession, customers have run back to sport, utilities and trucks.

Fast forward to today and now, although smaller, not Hummer size, SUVs are nearly 50 per person of the new Khazaal in the United States.

So what's old is new again, essentially, I think that's that in fromwhat everything.

But it seems like it certainly is the case here with Humarr as well.

But it is possible the brand could have a second life. At least two reports have said GM is considering bringing the Hummer back as part of a fleet of electric and hybrid sport utilities and trucks.

Part 2: The Future of Hummer

GM didn't comment on the report, but a move like that would allow the automaker to capitalize on the Hummers, military pedigree and adventurous image while keeping in step with what GM CEO Mary Barra calls GM's all electric future.

And over the years, even Schwarzenegger has been seen piloting Hummers, running on alternative fuels.

Schwarzenegger:

One of my Hummer has been turned into a hydrogen Hummer. And that, of course, emits no greenhouse gases at all.

The other Hummer has been turned into a biofuel Hummer and that one now releases emits a 40 to 50 percent less greenhouse gases.

I think those are the kind of initiatives each individual of us can take.

Reviving the Hummer could also be a relatively inexpensive way for GM to broaden its truck lineup at a time when Americans are scooping up pickups and sport utilities at an unprecedented rate.

Several industry watchers have said the shift toward utilities and trucks and the new car market is here to stay.

If that is true, automakers are likely to keep trying to carve out new niches to distinguish themselves and squeeze higher margins out of each purchase.

Big, butch, off-road ready vehicles are once again the order of the day.

The longtime off-road favorite Jeep Wrangler has climbed from eighty 4,650 units in 2008 to two hundred 84,615 units in 2018.

And Jeep added the gladiator pickup truck to its Wrangler lineup for the 2019 model year.

While GM has off-road capable vehicles, it doesn't really have one that directly replaced the Hummer, nor one that could directly compete with the Wrangler.

Having a dedicated, off-road oriented brand could be a boon to GM and its ongoing war for truck and SUV dominance with its Detroit rivals.

How much hype was there around the Jeep Gladiator launch?

People are, you know, still very excited about that Hummer H2 you know, a year later. The gladiator is actually a revival of a pickup truck Jeep sold in the 1960s.

In similar manner, Ford plans to revive the Bronco, another once popular utility Hummer H2. Toyota brought back its Supera sports car.

Honda pulled the passport name out of its archives for a new sport utility.

When automakers reintroduced brands, they can take advantage of nostalgia while also saving money they would have to spend introducing customers to a totally new product.

Even a brand is notorious as Hummer is still a recognized one.

The Hummer was certainly a polarizing vehicle, but reviving it in this market is starting to look like a smart bet.

American cars are struggling in China and it may only get tougher.

U.S. automakers shares of the Chinese auto market have fallen and companies have scrambled to shore up their businesses in the largest car market in the world.

One firm that is especially seen in its share of troubles is Ford. Its rival, General Motors, is the second-largest in sales in China behind German giant Volkswagen.

A late arrival, a less than ideal partnership and difficulty keeping up with the rapid pace of the fast-growing and a highly competitive.

Chinese market have all left Ford in the dust behind its larger rivals. But the blue oval seems determined to succeed.

The company said earlier in 2019 it has a plan to catch up to its competitors and to be fair to Ford, things are now tough for everyone in China.

Intense competition, the rise of Chinese brands in a slowing market means the good days for foreign automakers may have come to an end, even as Chinese companies plant stakes in the United States.

How Ford Is Falling Behind In China

The Chinese Car Market

In the later decades of the 20th century, China began opening up its domestic automotive market to foreign companies on the condition that they form 50/50 partnerships with Chinese firms.

Up to that point, domestic companies had ruled the Chinese market and they tended to focus on commercial trucks.

But there were a few foreign manufacturers who sold cars in the country in low volumes.

Toyota, for example, had begun marketing its Crown sedan in 1964. One of the first international companies to establish a meaningful business in China was the German company Volkswagen.

The company signed an assembly contract in 1982 with the Shanghai Automobile and Tractor Company, at that time, the largest Chinese vehicle manufacturer.

Around the same time, French brand Peugeot and American brand Jeep also set up joint venture partnerships in China. Other similar agreements came later.

But with the exception of the Jeep partnership, Japanese and European automakers tended to dominate among foreign brands working in China.

How Ford Is Falling Behind In China

Ford and GM Battle For China

The biggest American player in China is General Motors, which won a battle with its arch-rival Ford, over a partnership with China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation in the mid-1990s.

GM has been partnered with the firm. Ever since Ford later joined together with Changan another state-owned Chinese manufacturer.

And that relationship has been considered a source of strain for Ford in the country.

GM At one point I thought they were late to the game, but they caught up very quickly.

Volkswagen was was in really early and became a very well known foreign nameplate really fast and then GM caught up with them basically.

GM and Volkswagen have been the market leaders for quite some time.

Ford was late to the party. Ford came in and to be frank about it, their joint venture partner, Changan, was not quite at the level of the joint venture partners that Volkswagen and GM had in terms of sophistication and government power and influence and things like that.

And so Ford had some disadvantages out of the gate.

In addition, Ford and its partner have had difficulty in the past keeping up with the rapidly changing new car market.

Fashions change enormously. One year, some models of Volkswagen will be the one that everyone wants.

And then the next year it'll be a Buick that everyone wants. And to some extent it's regional, but it's also very quickly changing.

The Chinese auto market is super competitive. China is far and away the most crowded market in the world with cash.

More than 80 brands vying for market share. That's all of your global brands from Europe, Korea, Japan, United States.

In addition to dozens of Chinese brands so, to get your brand to stand out really takes a lot of hard work.

Volkswagen is the largest automotive presence in China but GM is number two and it has a far larger presence in the country than its smaller American rival.

Vehicles Sold in China:

Whereas Ford sold roughly 750 2000 cars in China in 2018, GM sold more than 3.6 million.

Auto Industry Market Share in China

Ford's share of the Chinese market has not cracked more than 5 % since 2008, and the company has actually lost shares since 2015 from a high of 4.7 % of the market to 2.9 % in 2018.

Buick has a long history in China. It was the car that ferried famous Chinese figures such as Sun Yat-sen, commonly regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern China, and Zhou Enlai, the first Premier of the People's Republic of China.

To be fair to Ford, it hasn't been terribly easy for any of the three Detroit automakers in China in recent months as slowing economic growth has dented consumer demand.

Things really began to slow in 2015 and automakers for the first time needed to discount their prices in order to stimulate growth in the car market.

Then by 2018, even discounting wasn't doing the trick and we started to see actual declines in demand for the first time in memory.

I mean, you'd have to go back to the early 90s to find a time when the market was not roaring back with declining.

And that's where we are right now on the 16th straight month of declines.

In the first eight months of 2019, U.S. automakers share of Chinese passenger vehicle sales fell to 9.5 % from 10.7 % during the same period of 2018, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

During that same time, German carmakers share rose to 23.8 % from 21.6 and Japanese automakers rose to 21.7 % from 18.3 %.

Global trade war has also created headaches for companies and fed risk aversion among Chinese consumers, according to industry watchers.

President Donald Trump has lashed out at GM on Twitter about its Chinese manufacturing footprint. The automaker cited the trade war as a potential risk to its business in China in its 2018 annual report.

The trade dispute has affected Ford's business as well. The automaker has said the trade war has raised the costs of its vehicles in China and led the companies to cancel plans to import its Focus crossover from China to the U.S.

The Future Of China's Car Market

There are reasons to be optimistic about the future of foreign automakers in the country.

China is lifting certain restrictions on foreign companies that could give them more control over their operations in the country and a greater share of the cash they make.

BMW became the first automaker to buy out a majority share of its JV partnership, BMW Brilliance.

Tesla has also managed to set up shop in China without any JV arrangement at all, something many people who watch the industry consider astounding.

Decoupling from a Chinese partner could mean a higher share of profits.

But it remains to be seen how easy such a situation will be to manage, though joint ventures have been required by law. Chinese auto industry watchers say they also serve a practical purpose.

The government is so heavily involved in business in China that having a partnership with a state-owned company smooths out processes that could otherwise be unmanageable for a foreign operator trying to go it alone.

While sales have slowed in recent months, there are still millions of untapped Chinese customers out there.

One potential for tremendous growth in China's electric vehicle market, which the government has been keen to promote both for the sake of reducing China's tremendous pollution problem and for the purpose of turning Chinese business into a global leader in electric vehicle technology.

Electric vehicles have changed the game because they are, by all accounts, much simpler to produce the drive.

Trains are very simple and electric vehicles. You have a lot of startups in the electric vehicle business that haven't been in the vehicle business before.

They're funded by the equivalent of a Facebook or an Amazon in China. Somebody with a lot of money, with a lot of high tech expertise and no tradition of producing vehicles whatsoever.

And they have entered the electric vehicle business

In 2018 About 95% of the domestic electric vehicle market was controlled by Chinese makers, but importers are beginning to introduce some of their own vehicles.

Ford and Jangling Motors jointly developed the Ford Territory Battery Electric Vehicle business. Ford's first BEV in China, which launched in summer 2019.

Apart from that, Ford made some big moves in 2018 and 2019 to improve its business in the country.

The automaker spun its China business out of its Asia Pacific operations into a standalone entity and it appointed Anning Chen, president of the Ford China Group.

In April, the company launched its Ford China 2.0 initiative, which aims to give the automaker's business a shot in the arm.

Ford kicked off that move with an announcement that it will launch more than 30 new Ford and Lincoln vehicles over the next three years.

All of which will be tailored to Chinese consumers. More than 10 of them will be electric or hybrids.

Tailoring product to the market involves making changes that seem as subtle as changing the face of a vehicle for debuted its escape titanium for the Chinese market in April.

Ford sells the Escape in a titanium trim in the U.S., too, but the company put a different face on its Chinese version to appeal to Chinese customers.

At the time, Ford's vice president of global design said Chinese buyers prefer designs that are understated, yet powerful.

Ford is also working on a China-specific version of its Sync infotainment system with artificial intelligence technology from Chinese tech giant Baidu.

The company is also starting to leverage China as a product research and development hub.

The automaker's Chinese partner, Changan Ford, will design and develop the next generation Ford Escort.

And recently, all three Detroit automakers also displayed pickup trucks, a Detroit staple at a Shanghai trade show in early November 2019.

Pickups are considered an extremely important product for U.S. automakers.

Pickups are also a category in China that have been resistant to the recent slump in auto sales.

Of course, in China, American firms do not have the home-field advantage they have when selling trucks in the U.S., including customers reputed to be stubbornly patriotic and a long-standing 25 % tariff on all imported pickups.

I'm here for this brand new product in the Audi Q8 s line up, the Audi Q8 review.

Not very often you get a brand new model, so this is exciting.

What they've basically done is taken the 3 row 7 passenger 2019 Audi Q7 and turned it into more of a coupe like sportier version.

The wheelbase remains the same, it offers you a ton of space on the inside. Let's get in, go for a drive and I'll tell you all about the new Audi Q8.

Before I get into the specs of this new Q8, a little background on where we are.

Atacama Desert, high desert plane in Chile, one of the driest places on Earth, one of the places against the least amount of cloud cover.

So this is a hot spot worldwide for people who come and stargaze and do astronomy.

So it really is a spectacular spot and we're here in the wintertime down to about the freezing mark overnight and the highs around, you know, 20 degrees Celsius or about 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Just a spectacular spot for what Audi hopes is going to be a spectacular vehicle for them.

So what they've done with this new Audi Q8 is take the 2019 Audi Q7, make it shorter, make it sportier, crop the roof, give it a more sleek and sexy look.

The good thing about not being the first into this sort of coupe-like utility space is you get to learn from the others and do what's good and leave some other things behind.

So we'll start on the outside. 66 millimeters shorter as I mentioned.

The roof line has been dropped by 35 millimeters, but the product's a little bit wider than the 2019 Audi Q7 by about 27 millimeters and you notice that on the outside.

The shoulders, the front fenders, the rear fenders, they have haunches, they give accent lines to make the product look much more hunkered down and sportier looking.

Now you also notice the light bar that goes right across the back of the Q8 and that's to give it a family resemblance to the rest of the new Audi products that are also coming with that light bar.

At the front the grille is not as big as the 2019 Audi Q7, it's a little bit narrower but a bit wider. And the headlamps are a bit more sleek as well giving it that sportier look.

Around the back the exhaust tips have been integrated into the lower valance to give this new Q8 a sportier look. Wheel sizes are really quite dramatic.

They go from nineteen inches up to twenty-two inches. But the one thing that was noted here yesterday is the diameter not only of the wheels, but the tires is also bigger.

So when you put big wheels on a SUV vehicle, especially a sleeker looking one, it certainly looks much sportier.

Now the Q8 that we're going to get in North America comes with one engine.

There are other TDI products here, but we're not going to get those in North America. It is the 3 liter turbocharged six-cylinder with 340 horsepower.

It's a great powerplant and it's doing everything perfectly well today even though we are at altitude, Quattro all-wheel drive and then you get add-ons so you can put as different packages.

For example the regular springs are steel springs, but you get active dampers so you can select between comfort, you know, sportiness and also individual settings through the drive select system.

But there will be two optional air suspensions.

A regular one and then a sport-tuned air suspension.

Now speaking of the suspension, if you get the air suspension you're also going to be able to get the active rear steering.

Which turns the wheels opposite to each other at low speeds, which is great for parking in parking lots or low-speed maneuvers in and out of underground parking lots.

But at high speeds the wheels turn in tandem, which gives you much better on-road stability.

So the roads here in Chile have been some of them have been fantastic and some of them have been marginal.

Yesterday driving to the hotel we were in a big GM van and I thought these roads are not that good.

Then driving the exact same roads today but in the Q8 it's amazing how this can swallow up all of these bumps and do with absolute grace.

Then when you push it into the corners, it's doing everything perfectly well.

Let's talk about the 2019 Audi Q8 inside now. This is the wow factor. So, sure it's a great looking product on the outside and I think when you compare it to BMW's X6 and the GLE Coupe from Mercedes-Benz.

I mentioned they didn't fall into that trap of making it look really kind of odd-looking... It has a cohesive design that is sporty and when you get inside that cohesiveness carries through.

It's got the futuristic MMI touch response system with the two screens.

The upper screen is 10.9 inches, and the lower screen is just over 8 inches. And this is where all of your controls are for the car, for communications and everything that you need to access.

There are some negatives and some positives to this.

The negative is that some people might find it cumbersome and overwhelming initially and then on top of that it's a dust and fingerprint magnet.

Which just means the owner has to take the time, you know, every once in a while to give it a wipe down.

But that's not much of a price to pay to have so much more information right here at your fingertips.

Positives

So I have liked cars in the past where you have switches that are reasonably accessible.

You want to change something, you just look down and you change it with a button, so they tried to mimic that but it's a touchscreen with haptic feedback.

So when you push the button, you know that you've activated whatever you're trying to get into. On top of that, it's customizable.

Now, when I was on the Audi A7 launched in South Africa at the beginning of this year, I actually sat down with one of the engineers that helped design this whole system.

He walked through how it works and how it's customizable and it's worth your time to watch to see exactly what's going on here.

Because he explains it very simple and once you learn what this system can do, you go oh I get and it actually does make sense.

So you have those two screens and then in behind the steering wheel, you've got the new Audi digital cockpit.

Now we've seen that before, customizable, it really is dramatic when you have navigation on the screen behind the steering wheel and navigation in the centre of the cluster.

Now what can I say about Audi Q8 interior that hasn't already been said?

The level of refinement and finish in this product is really second to none.

This particular car has a great combination of leather dashboard, soft touch materials, Alcantara, Alcantara headliner.

The quilted seats that are very supportive and comfortable, the beautiful flat-bottom steering wheel and it makes it feel rich and luxurious

You spent the money, you want to feel like you're getting your money's worth, but also supporting at the same time.

I mentioned the other products and one of the things that's detrimental to both of those is outward visibility.

The windows are as large as you expect in most five-passenger utility vehicles and also because this is based on the Q7, they didn't shorten the wheelbase.

They left the wheelbase long and that affords a ton of space in the backseat. I've had some time in the back already there today and you can stretch out.

The back seats also slide forward 10 centimeters to add to the already large cargo area at just over 600 liters, so you add even more space when you slide those seats forward.

We're getting to drive this new Q8 long before it's available in the Canadian marketplace and we don't have the specific 2019 audi q8 price.

So what you need to do is go online to Audi and look at the 2019 Audi Q7 and configure a product similar to this similar engine and with the features that you might want.

I've been told that you're probably gonna pay a little bit of a premium to get this sleeker look.

But you also then need to look at the competitors to see what they're charging to get a really good idea of what this new q8 is going to cost because it's a competitive marketplace out there and this product has to compete with them at a price point as well.

But as I said at the beginning, it's nice coming in late to the party. Those two products have been out for a while, Audi looks at them, what do we like about them?

What do we not like about them and come up with a product that is easy to live with like could you live with this car? Absolutely every single day.

Look to the end of 2018, the beginning of 2019 to get this new product. Yes, there are already established players in the market.

This one does it with a different kind of level of finesse. The extra room in the backseat is amazing, the cargo space is great.

You really lose none of the functionality of a regular SUV, but you get a much sportier, sexy looking vehicle. The Q8 the future of audi for SUV... I like it.

Thursday night, Elon Musk launch his Tesla Cybertruck Price and Specs, the first electric pickup trucks on the market.

This is insane, this is absolutely insane. Well, that was nuts. Let's just start off with the specs than the Interior of this vehicle because they're kind of crazy. So What is the Tesla Cybertruck?

On the Cybertruck specs side, There are three different models to choose from.

You have the Single Motor Rear Wheel Drive which does a zero to 60 time of 6.5 seconds. Has 250 miles or more of range, and can tow 7500 lbs.

Plus You have the Dual Motor All Wheel Drive version which does zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds, 300+ Miles, and can tow 10,000 lbs.

Then you have a Tri-Motor design. This is the first Tesla officially announced other than the roadster specs that will have the Tri Motor design.

This one gets zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds, has a 500+ mile range. I can't wait to test that, and a 14,000 lbs towing capacity.

Insane! As the event went, as the Interior design is, as these specs are, this is insane all around. That's the theme here I guess in this whole thing.

Yeah, setting that all aside, if you just put these vehicles side-by-side and looked at the specs what you're going to find is that the Rivian can tow up to 11,000 lbs.

It has Quad-Motor design, so that gives it some really interesting things.

And It has a tank turn feature which will allow it to basically spin in place which is kind of wild and awesome specs, probably actually somewhat useful.

It gets 0 to 60 in 3 seconds, and it can go up to 400 miles on a single charge.

So, I would say: Comparable in CyberTruck specs. You know, you can nit-pick and yes, it can tow quite a bit more. And yes 500 miles verses 400 miles, and all that kind of stuff.

Yes, the Tesla pickup truck has better specs overall. But the Rivian is not shabby by any stretch. I think the Rivian is a completely capable vehicle.

Let's talk about the Cybertruck design. This looks like a concept car. I can't believe they're going to make these Tesla features. This is not something that I imagine many people being attracted to.

I got a lot of text messages asking if this was a joke. I, personally, kind of expected there to be a: Just kidding, here's the other one.

But it fits very well with Elon Musk's comments previously about it being crazy futuristic, and it actually fitting that Blade Runner theme.

If you look at the original Blade Runner movie, the way the cars were designed, it was spot on with how this design came out.

It's pretty crazy though, and it has some unique features in how they did it. So, let's talk about that real quick.

The Tesla CyberTruck itself is definitely not for everyone, and I hope they do come out with maybe a mass-market version of that someday.

Right now, I think that the design is probably just too hard for a lot of people to really get there heads around.

You definitely will have people order this Tesla pickup truck, and that will open up the eyes, and it will be fun to see on the road and drive, and all that kind of thing.

It may be just the fact that it's gonna be such a capable vehicle at such a great price with such an amazing performance, features and towing capacity and all those things with a comfortable Interior design.

Maybe that will win people over. Maybe they will kind of look past the futuristic kind of design and go into, "Okay, let's try this out. "Because I just literally can't get a vehicle this "capable for this price, I just can't, right?"

One of the features is the exoskeleton which is just essentially the outside of the Tesla pickup CyberTruck.

And it's made from this ultra-hard, 30 times cold rolled, stainless steel structural skin, as they call it, which is very similar to what the new Space-X Star Ship is made from.

Yes, the one that just blew it's a lid. And in the demo, we see Franz banging on a regular car truck door with a hammer.

And then the Tesla Cybertruck, and it did no damage at all to the Cybertruck. In fact, I heard they were doing this all day.

They were just sick of banging on it. So, that's kind of features interesting. And I guess that's good, but I'm not sure what that means for crash tests, and crumple zones, and all kinds of other safety things.

So we'll see kind of where this goes from here, but it seems insane that they made a vehicle so structurally durable.

And I think that that may have opened up some of the interior possibilities.

So, let's see Why did Tesla truck glass break?

Tesla Cybertruck have an armored glass, or transparent metal as they were calling it. But then, a real world test happened, and we got this.

- Now, in there defense, I heard that this was above the 50th time that they had thrown that ball at that window, and so that would have made sense.

But that didn't go well, and I think that kind of set the tone for the rest of the presentation, unfortunately.

And as our good friend Zack from JerryRigEverything says, "Glass is glass, and glass breaks."

Adaptive Air Suspension and Tesla Electric ATV

After they demoed that, they moved on to the adaptive air suspension, which is pretty cool and probably a very useful feature for people that are towing things, or putting big heavy objects in and out of the back of the Tesla truck.

It doesn't really look like a truck. Again, it doesn't really have that distinctive shape which Elon Musk harped on.

But to me, it was even hard to tell there was a bed from where I was standing, so later I got to see it up close.

They drove this ATV, an electric ATV, which dope features, awesome, can't wait to see what that's actually like.

I got to see it up close and personal, and it's just bizarre and crazy that there's like, it's just mind-blowing.

The whole thing was just mind-blowingly futuristic. It didn't feel like reality.

It felt like a movie. And when you see the ATV coming in, what happens is the truck actually has, first off, a ramp that's built into it that pops down.

And then when it goes up, they plug the ATV in so it can charge from one of the 220-volt outlets in the back, And you can see the car self-leveling.

So despite an ATV doing that, it's kind of useful to have plugs like that. And Elon Musk has stated this in the past.

Over all the design of Tesla Cybertruck and the exterior are out of this world.

Elon Musk even tweeted earlier that the pressurized version of this can be used on Mars, or will be used on Mars which is just crazy to think.

It seems the CyberTruck Exterior like it may actually fit better on Mars than it does on a regular surface street on Earth, as crazy as that seems to think.

So, I don't expect a lot of people to be drawn to this, but I'm not sure if it's maybe one of those things where every time there's a new design, or a shift in how something looks.

There's an initial kind of revolt, or kind of difficulty getting over it, and then maybe it becomes normal and looks better over time.

I'm guessing not a lot of people in the mainstream side are really gonna be into this. Probably the hardcore fans are, but we'll see how it shakes out as we get more data down the road when they start selling this Electric truck.

1. What time is the Tesla truck reveal?

Speaking of selling the Tesla Cybertruck, well it'll be a couple years. 2021 is when the first ones are going to be delivered. And then 2022 for the rest of them.

2. So let's see How much is the Tesla Cybertruck?

Now when they go to sell Tesla Cybertruck, the price here is kind of crazy.

The Single Motor Version, and if you recall, that one got 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds, 250 miles, and 7500 lbs towing, is $39,900 which is so cheap for a vehicle that is that capable.

The Dual Motor one, again 4.5 seconds 0 to 60, 300 miles of range, and 10000 lbs towing at Price of $49,900.

The Tri-Motor Design, the highest-end one, with 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, which most people probably can't fathom how quick, and the acceleration of what it feels like to go 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds.

It's blowing Price quick. 500+ miles of range, and 14,000 lbs towing, which is crazy in terms of all of the capacity here, $69,000, under $70,000.

The biggest difference between the Rivian R1T and the Tesla CyberTruck is that the price of the Rivian starts at $69,000.

And if you recall, the top end Tesla CyberTruck is $69,900. So, ironically Tesla's really strong suit with this vehicle is the price.

I mean, for that price, that's an extremely capable vehicle which is kind of nuts to really think about it, but that's what it is Elon Musk Truck provide the Thursday night.

If you look at regular F-150 or Dodge Ram or something, I mean, you're looking at $60-80,000 for some of these vehicles.

I applaud them for that, and I think that that is going to actually yield some fruit in other ways.

Now let's move to the interior of the Tesla Cybertruck because besides the actual specs and the price, this is probably my favorite part of the vehicle.

When I got into the car, it was big, or truck I should say. It's really comfortable. And there were three in the back.

There are two in the front and a third seat that can pop up from the middle in the front. So it's a six-seater, and it didn't feel cramped with three people in the back, three adult males.

The interior is super clean, very minimalistic, similar to the Model 3, and the steering wheel, I don't know why they put the Roadster steering wheel in there.

It shouldn't be a race car steering wheel. I don't imagine any person that drives a truck being comfortable from the Interior and having to that all the time.

So, it's gonna be interesting if those features themselves make it to specs production exactly. Now, this is the unveiling of it, so it will have some tweaks between now and then. But it, you know, the interior was really nice with this amazing Price range.

Also in the Interior, we have the glass panel on the back and the glass windshield on the front were, it made it feel like you were in this crazy futuristic pod.

Not like you were in a vehicle closed and cramped in there. So anyway, there's that. But overall, fantastic job on the interior.

Comparison Tesla Cybertruck with Rivian

Now, we can't really wrap this up or go further without talking about a comparison this Cybertruck with Rivian.

And you know, this Electric Tesla truck vehicle is gonna stand on its own, and they have all their ecosystem, specs, Interior feeling and everything involved.

So, it's different, right? Rivian and Tesla Interior are completely different. They are different stages of their growth, and their coming to market or whatever that's what Elon Musk Truck provide the Thursday night.

The Cybertruck Charge Range

If the Tesla CyberTruck can go 500 miles on a charge range with the Tri-Motor features and design, that sounds very much like the new Plaid Powertrain Model S coming out with the Tri Motors that is being tested out in Germany around the Nuremberg Ring and all that.

Well, if that can go 500 miles, and the Roadster can, reportedly, go above 620 miles of range, What would the Model S get?

Somewhere between there, probably closer to the Roadster. It's extremely aerodynamic, is going to weight a lot less.

I look forward actually to a lot of the things they did, and a lot of the ways they invented things and innovated here making their way into some of the other vehicles and future generations of the vehicles because that I think is where there is gonna be a lot bigger boost.

So imagine if you could buy a Model S with 500 miles of range. That's crazy features, right? And then with the Super Charger Network, and V-3 Charging and all that.

I think, you know, that's where you're gonna have a bigger impact probably overall in terms of EV Adoption, or Tesla growth even.

So, you know, trucks, especially big ones that are really capable like this Cybertruck features are not cheap, and they don't get great mileage either.

When you think about all that put together, I think that, The design is the one big knock against this vehicle after the Price.

And, people some people will get over that, already accepting it, already ordered it, but not everyone.

So we'll see how it pans out. But let me know what you think about the Price and space. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Maybe there's a big gotcha or something that I don't get. But right now, it's hard for me to see this selling very well out there despite it being incredible in some ways.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E features, price range and battery performance this electric car its probably the best Tesla competition today.

Last night I was up in Los Angeles at the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E unveiling event, and I'm impressed, to be honest. And I think this is probably one of the best Tesla competition yet.

Let's talk through all the mustang details, The extended-range battery and what this means for the features of electric vehicles.

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, yes that's a mouthful, is a fully electric crossover, or relatively small SUV, with a top range of around 300 miles.

Mustang Mach-E Performance

The top-end performance of Mustang March-E is zero to 60 in the mid three-second mark, which is similar to a 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500, but in my testing, it didn't really pan out that well.

But overall, from a specs standpoint, thumbs up. I am really stoked that Ford performance is coming out of the gate swinging here with a compelling electric vehicle.

Exterior Features

Now probably my favorite part was the interior of this vehicle. Inside of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, you'll find two massive screens.

A 10.2-inch digital cluster, or what we would call a binnacle dash, right behind the steering wheel, which looks really clean and well laid out.

The position of it, the angle of it, the fact that it's open on top, instead of having kind of a hood come over it.

Maybe a little bit difficult in the sun, but I think it's a really great placement and use of that area.

Exterior and Overall Look

So let's talk about the exterior and overall look of the Mustang Mach-E.

The frunk on this vehicle is pretty large, and you can fit kind of an ice chest-sized thing in there, so bags, and groceries, and all that should be no problem.

There is a hatchback, but there's no undercarriage, like you find in Teslas.

There are Mustang badging and things around it to really give you the sense that this is a performance vehicle, and there's no grille of any kind, which is really nice that they're embracing that side of electric vehicles.

However, I don't really love the look when it's the same color. I actually kind of prefer the nosecone, which is similar to what the old Tesla Model S had.

Panoramic Roof

the 2021 Mustang Mach-E has a fixed-glass panoramic roof, which is a big bonus, and something that I really love as a trend for new vehicles coming out.

Because I'm someone that gets carsick, and for me, that really just make the car performance a lot easier riding in the back of a car like this.

So overall, I don't think the styling is my favorite, but it's not bad. It doesn't look like a goofy electric car, looking at you BMW, but it is something that I think is an acquired taste.

Mustang Mach-E Touchscreen

Inside the Mustang Mach-E There's also a massive 15.5-inch touchscreen right in the middle, which is, I mean you just can't deny, is exactly what Tesla did years ago with the Model S and X, and it is a great design feature.

So, great artists are inspired thieves. I mean, this is a fantastic design, so why not mimic it, just like every smartphone now is basically mimicking what the iPhone started back in 2007.

Now one interesting quirk about this Mustang Mach-E screen in the middle is that it had a physical dial, but inside of the dial it was a digital performance, meaning that in theory.

This could be configured for different things than just volume, which is what it's currently set to as screen features.

The one thing about that screen I wasn't in love with was the position. So it didn't really seem to be angled all that well for the driver.

And if you know, in the Model 3, it's totally straight, not angled at the driver or the passenger, but in the Model S and X, it is just slightly tilted toward the driver, which makes it just a bit easier when you're glancing over for things.

So, the model I Features was in was a prototype, and I asked about whether or not it would be adjustable. The guy said not in this car, but he also admitted he was just a driver and he didn't really know.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E screen's in the middle, and the one behind the dashboard, fantastic job. I really love this interior features.

Tech-Features

Now let's talk tech-features, because this is what really got me excited about my first electric car, and this is something that 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is really embracing.

They've created an entirely new user interface here, and they have a lot going on in that massive screen. They're really trying to take advantage of it.

So first off, the Mach-E has some streaming radio stuff built-in, the screen itself is a touchscreen, and it has reminders that pop up.

The Voice Assistant

One feature that I really liked about the tech of this car was the voice assistant.

- Okay, Ford. (device blings) Take me to Jay Leno's Garage.

- [Device] Okay, starting route. (audience cheers)

- [Man] Does Jay know we're comin'? (chuckling) Yeah, okay Ford. (device blings) How 'bout some coffee along the way? -

So the thing about that voice assistant that I was really excited about was that it was triggered just by your commands, by saying, "Hey Porsche," or, "Hey Ford."

And this is something I think Tesla could embrace.

Now, some people may not like that because of privacy concerns, but, understandably.

So, this is a very convenient feature, and considering you're driving, and you don't wanna be looking away, even finding buttons or any of that, then this is I think a good step forward.

Door handles

The door handles use a button and a little pull-bar instead of a door handle, which I think gives the 2021 Mustang Mach-E a really refined sleek look down the sides.

Phone as a Key

The Mach-E also will use your phone as a key, which is familiar to Model 3 owners, as well as it will get over-the-air updates, which is something that all of us Tesla owners know and love about our electric cars.

In a way that makes it just a bit more convenient for everyone, and a bit safer.

Front-Facing Camera

Now I didn't get much time with the car, but I did notice that they also had a low front-facing camera, and other cameras positioned all around the electric car.

This will give them a 360 degree camera view, and also enable active park assist. Although I personally don't find the park assist stuff very useful.

Self-Driving Features

Now I haven't heard much or seen much regarding full self-driving, however, Ford has invested over a billion dollars already into this field.

And has stated before that they plan to have a self-driving ride share fleet by 2021. I'm very skeptical of this.

I don't actually think fully self-driving cars, in this regard, are gonna be widespread until much later, but hey, they're being bold, they're being aggressive, I like that.

That's how progress in an industry that has been stymied by stagnation for dozens of years now, that's how it gets made. You gotta be bold, you gotta push forward. So I really applaud them for taking those steps here.

Co-Pilot360 Features

Now in terms of self-driving features, there doesn't really seem to be anything listed currently for this, other than something they're calling Co-Pilot360.

Which is not really like what Tesla Autopilot does, but it does include the safety features, like automatic emergency braking, pre-collision assist, post-collision braking.

I guess, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and side warnings.

So overall, I think this is gonna be a fantastic driving experience for the mass market people out there.

This isn't a performance car. It doesn't fit a lot of the bills that maybe some of us Tesla owners are used to, but overall I think people are gonna be really stoked on this.

The Extended-Range Battery

And with 300 miles, The extended-range battery and charging performance isn't really gonna be a big deal, especially considering most of your charging's done already at home.

But when the extended-range battery comes to road trips, they've partnered with Electrify America.

And Ford is wrapping this into something they're calling Ford Pass Connect, which basically simplifies access to a bunch of different battery chargers and networks that they're partnering with.

Now, over 90% of your charging performance is done at home, but, when you're on the road, you're gonna want a DC fast charger.

And the Mach-E battery range supports up to 150 kilowatts charging speed, which is great, but it can be very pricey due to demand charges that bump up the rate when your charging rate also bumps up.

Electrify America Features

As I said, they've partnered with Electrify America, which is kinda the largest one outside of the Tesla Supercharger network for their fast-charging capabilities.

They have a lot of other options as well, but really if you just focus on the battery performance.

I think it's a young but growing, and very compelling charging network that is gonna really enable and reduce a lot of the concerns that people may have about using this as their everyday and kind of everything vehicle.

So depending on your route and where you live, it may be sufficient to use the Electrify America network for these fast-charging situations when the car battery needs to charge.

The Hard Part Extended-Range Battery

The only real hard part about this charging performance, the fact that they exist is great,

And they work and all that extended-range battery, there aren't a ton of stalls, so for example, there may be four at this one in Yuma, where at a Tesla one there'd be 12 or 24, or even upwards of 50 at some of 'em.

They do great extended-range battery, but as more electric vehicles come online and people start buying these, those things are gonna get crowded really quick.

There's gonna be a bottleneck, but it's not there currently. So, I kinda look at the Electrify America network as young but showing promise.

But, thumbs up for all of this extended-range battery performance, and I am really looking forward to seeing these on the road.

Home Charging Performance

Now for home charging performance, Ford also makes a home charger, and they're partnering with Amazon Home to do installs, to kinda simplify that process of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E battery range.

It uses the CCS charger performance, which is pretty standard. So there are actually many other options, and of course you don't have to get this one. It also comes with a mobile charger features that you can plug into a regular 240 outlet.

So really, out of the gate, you don't really need to spend a ton of money setting things up. You might need a plug installed, but if you want, they make their own branded one, or there are many other options you can go with to keep your battery fully.

Ford Trucks, SUVs

Last quarter, Ford delivered over 580,000 cars, trucks, SUVs. That is as many as, I think Tesla hopes to get delivered next year, in all of 2020.

This is a major automaker that delivers millions of cars worldwide, per year, and they have a 100 year-plus headstart on other startups like Tesla in this space of basically being a car maker, of delivering 'em, of servicing 'em, of selling 'em, all those things.

When it comes to self-driving, when it comes to tech, when it comes to those things, this is definitely new to them.

And it shows, in the kind of immaturity a little bit, in some of the software and how those things work, but the fact that they are really going all in here and spending billions of dollars, and have Bill Ford on stage, debunking all the myths about EVs.

- So tell me about the freedom part, because you know, most people wonder about the range of an electric car. How far can it travel on a full battery?

- Well, it's got up to a 300 mile battery range, and that's freedom from the gas pump, but frankly, it's also freedom from oil changes.

- [Bearded Man] Right.

I really applaud them for this because whether or not you are gonna buy one of these, it doesn't matter. A rising tide lifts all sails, and that is what's happening here.

Tesla sparked the modern EV revolution, and now Ford and VW and everyone else is jumping onboard. So, the future of electrification is very bright.

So I am with Elon in congratulating Ford on this achievement, and I am very excited about what the future holds.

Price Range

The price range of 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E from the mid $40,000 to $60,000 before any incentives. So assuming you qualify for it, that would knock the base model down to the mid $30,000, and the high end down to the low $50,000.

And if you're lucky enough to live in the beautiful state of California, then you might also qualify for an additional $2500 off in a state rebate, bringing the price range down even lower.

Electric SUV Conclusion

If you know someone that is really skittish on these Features, or really just kind of down on electric SUV, share this article with them.

So Maybe that will open their eyes, because when it was just Tesla, or these other startups, or these other kind of niche on-the-fringe players, or, as people, the mainstream, saw them, that was a different story.

Now that you have the mainstream guys really diving in here, it's gonna change people's mind and overall sell a lot more electric SUV, which is what we're all here for I think. That's the features that we want.

One where we are reducing our emissions and making better decisions for our own selves by being more economical with our choices.

How to Buy a Tesla: Price and Features

Knowing how to buy a tesla need a Test drive first, then you buying tesla with confidence from tesla's website.Tesla car are not like other cars.

They are much more technologically focused. And that changes things when you think about whether or not right now is the time to buy Tesla.

But I have a little bit of experience here, I've had a few Teslas in my life, and I wanted to share what I've learned through that process

As well as what some of the data shows us here to help you decide whether or not you should wait to know, how to buy Tesla from Tesla's website.

There are two things to think about that may prevent you from just buying Tesla, the moment you're ready to do it and may give you pause.

The first one is what I'll call feature anxiety where you're worried about a new feature coming out that is gonna just make you feel dumb, like you really missed out on something by not waiting.

And the other one is price anxiety, and Tesla kinda brought this on themselves. So let's talk about how to buy tesla and those two things also maybe navigate these waters and figure out whether or not you should wait before buying Tesla.

How to Buy a Tesla: Price and Features

Tesla Features and Price

So tesla feature anxiety, as I mentioned, is when you're really worried about a new features and price coming out and you really are gonna want that thing.

And before buying Tesla now, this may be something that you've kind of absorbed from watching people online and maybe hearing stories or something like that.

But being a Tesla owner comes with this sense of awesome and you don't want to spend a ton of money on a vehicle and then be left without the latest and greatest. It definitely will make you feel bad, like you missed out, kind of a FOMO effect.

But really, there's only been one case in Tesla's history where this is very kind of cut and dry, very black and white where this happened.

Everything since then, in my opinion, has been mostly incremental changes and a lot of things that can be retrofit onto used vehicles.

How to Buy a Tesla: Price and Features

Tesla Autopilot

Really what I'm talking about is Autopilot version one when the vehicles went from not having Autopilot to having Autopilot and Tesla would not actually retrofit those original cars.

That is where you saw a big drop in price and a very big difference in the capabilities of the vehicle. Mostly everything since then has just been incremental changes.

Okay, I know, I know. Technically, the current version of Autopilot is much more advanced than the first version of Autopilot.

However, a lot of the features that really separate the two in my own experience and in my opinion here don't really make that big of a difference to somebody to search how to buy tesla from Tesla's website, if they've never had Autopilot.

If you think about it, if somebody goes from not having Autopilot to having Autopilot, that gap, that jump that they make is massive.

Then going from having Autopilot versus having Autopilot 2.5 or 3 that detects people cutting in front of you and maybe does lane changes and things automatically, isn't nearly as big of a jump.

So yes, the current version is much more advanced than the first version, but that gap is much smaller than the not Autopilot to Autopilot jump that people go through when they first get a Tesla.

And there are actually other updates that have been done which you can get retrofit back on your older vehicle.

So my original model S had a 3G connection built in and I could have added the 4G LTE one for about 400 bucks.

There's kind of a secret menu here of updates to Teslas that can be retrofit onto the older vehicles. You may not have known about that.

So a lot of the little incremental things aren't these kind of points where there is no way to go back such as when there's Autopilot versus not.

Tesla Autopilot in My Opinion

So really since then we haven't seen a major thing like the autopilot. So I would say, from that standpoint, the feature anxiety really shouldn't be as big of a deal as it may seem when you see a video.

But every little tiny detail and every change Tesla makes, most of those, if this is your first Tesla, you won't even notice and you won't even really miss because you never knew they were there.

So that begs the question, are we at a point where a completely game-changing, non-retrofitable piece of tech or change is coming to a Tesla? Maybe. Maybe.

Tesla Model S and Model X Price

But before we talk about what that feature or those features might be, let's think just a second here about your budget.

Because if you're not looking at a top-end Model S or X, if you're not looking at $100,000 or more to spend here, then none of this is really gonna make a difference to you.

Because chances are a lot of these features are not gonna be available in the cheaper lower-end models, befinitely not in the Model 3 or Model Y that are coming out.

But okay, let's assume you are looking at $100,000 or more to spend. First off, awesome that you're able to do that, you must have done very well for yourself, and so congratulations on that.

Tesla V3 Charging

The thing that I think may be coming that would change everything for the Model S and Model X specifically is V3 charging.

Now, Elon Musk has been tweeting a lot lately about the Plaid powertrain for the Model S, X, and Roadster.

This will include three motors for better performance, presumably better range, and a seven-seat option for the Model S, which I don't know why.

This is also what Tesla reportedly used on their record-setting Nurburgring test, which is the famous racetrack in Germany that a lot of car companies bring their prototype high-performance vehicles to get kind of a benchmark test drive of what it's capable of.

Now, of course, that's a prototype car and not something that will be in production any time soon.

But nonetheless, it's existing to see the Tesla Model S returning to her rightful place on the EV throne.

So Elon Musk has stated on Twitter that this new Plaid powertrain is coming into production in about a year or so. And honestly, I can't wait to take my first test drive on it.

But it's Elon Musk, so, what do we do about that? There are other rumors in other leaks that have been out there stating that this should be early 2020, and here's Elon saying it's gonna be late 2020.

Well, he's either being overtly optimistic, like he usually is, and it'll be two years or more, or he's sandbagging because he doesn't want people to stop buying Tesla Model S and Model X today, which, honestly, if you look at the numbers, have been down pretty dramatically for a while.

Tesla Model S, X, and The V3 Charging

But I think that's mostly because the Model 3 has V3 charging and all these other things and is just a lot cheaper. So really I think the Model 3 has been cannibalizing the S and X sales.

But if they have some new big thing that they unveil for the Model S and X which you have to imagine is coming sometime soon, And from my test drive experience, I think the Model S and X are gonna be fine in terms of selling.

And this is really the game you have to play. Now, again, if you have a budget of well over $100,000 and you're waiting on this, you can do it. I would say it's a fair thing to do. go now and take your first test drive before buying than take your decisions.

If you don't need a car right now and you have the budget, and you do want the latest, and greatest and you know there's something coming, yeah, it makes a whole lot of sense to wait.

But the question is how long is that gonna be. Is it gonna be a couple of months and maybe Elon Musk was sandbagging? Or is it gonna be over two years? '

Cause at that point, that's a long time there and you probably are gonna lose interest before your first-tesla test drive and all of that. So really, it's still kind of a guessing game.

Tesla Model S and Model X Range

Now, with that V3 charging, I just wanna point out one reason why I harp on this so much.

And if you saw my article last week you'll know that in about 20 minutes time you'll be able to get about 50% more range than you would versus the current V2 charger capability on the Model S and Model X.

That is where I do believe, once you have a Model S and Model X with V3 charging capability, all the ones with V2 are gonna seem like they are just obsolete.

So, on one hand, if you are waiting to start searching how to buy tesla and you have a healthy budget and you want the Model S or X, this could be a big win for you because you might get it a lot cheaper.

But if you buy a brand new top-spec one and then a couple of months later one comes out with V3 charging, you're gonna feel bad.

So this is the game you have to play and I don't have a great answer for you on this other than you have a lot of flexibility when you're in that budget and you're in that category.

So pay attention to things and if you get to the point where you just have to have one, just do it, especially if this is your first Tesla, you're not gonna be disappointed.

Tesla Price Anxiety

So the second thing that I mentioned is price anxiety. Tesla has been adjusting pricing for a while now and this definitely has burned some people that bought their Tesla and then the next day the exact same car dropped in price by several thousand dollars.

But it is common that the price of things goes down but not usually do they come back up, and this has happened for Tesla.

So it's been kind of a really strange ride in terms of how the pricing works for the different models here.

So this could be a thing that is definitely something to consider if you are in the budget side of it and you don't have a lot of money to spend, you don't really wanna miss out on a $5,000 discount.

But overall, the prices, as I mentioned, are trending downward, meaning that no matter when you buy tesla car, it's gonna be a better deal than someone got six months ago.

I know when I bought my Model 3, and I got it in January of 2018, I paid almost $70,000 for it. So that's a lot more than that exact same car is running for today.

So if you're not in that top-tier budget waiting on the latest and greatest Model S and Model X, I would say find one that is within your budget that suits your needs and go for it.

If this is your first Tesla, you're gonna be blown away. And as Joe Rogan likes to say, and I love this, it's gonna make every other car you've ever had seem just stupid in comparison.

How To Buy Your First Tesla

So a good place to start, I think, if this is your first Tesla and you're really not sure about where to go or what your needs are gonna be in five years or so, is to lease.

So maybe start with a Model 3, which you can lease for 399 a month, which is even cheaper than some BMWs on the market now.

And when you take into consideration fuel savings and maintenance costs that you're gonna save on that, you're actually gonna come out far ahead of a typical car you would maybe compare to this, like a BMW 3 Series or a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, one of those.

Really, the overall price you're gonna pay is much closer to, say, a Toyota Camry.

From there, once you've had an electric car for a while, you've kind of embraced the electric lifestyle, you've figured out your charging and everything else and maybe what your needs are.

then I would think more deeply about going down the road and maybe buying Tesla and keeping it for a much longer period of time.

If you remember, these cars are built to last, they really are. I mean, the parts and the powertrain and everything else, the components are rated at one million miles, the battery pack data we're seeing so far is well above 500,000 miles before the degradation becomes a real issue.

So you can keep this for a long time, and that's really the beauty of this whole thing is that these are sustainable vehicles that are really gonna serve you well for years and years to come. But you don't necessarily have to know all that before your first Tesla.

How to Buy a Tesla: Price and Features

Used Tesla or Lease One

So I would either lease one there or buy a used tesla that you can find at Tesla's website or many other websites that is well within your budget and gets you going, and then really figure out.

Because that I think is really just how it's gonna go. My first Model S, I was really focused on the color and the interior trim.

And a lot of these things that now, looking back, I would've totally sacrificed that for a longer range which turned out to be very important, even though I don't go on a lot of road trips.

So think about that, think about your situation, if you have a family, if you don't, if you like to go mountain biking a lot, if you go on road trips, whatever your situation may be.

Make sure that the range and the storage and all those things kinda line up first within your budget, get a sense of what's what, and then go from there.

And if you know someone else that's on the fence about this, please share this article with them and let them know that it's okay, that they don't have to be obsessive over all the details before they make this decision. You can do it now and they kind of obsess even more later.

Really kinda get into it and then figure your way out, just like if you were learning music or something else.

You don't go into it wanting to be at the top of the game, you wanna start out small and then kinda grow in the direction that suits you.

Tesla lithium-ion battery and what can the 1 Million Miles do to our electric cars batteries, and more comparing energy by Jeff Dahn research.

He knows his electric stuff, so when he and his team publish a report like this, people listen. After reading through the energy report myself, there were a few key things that jumped out at me.

This formulation shows very little degradation over time and can withstand full depth of discharge energy cycles better than your typical electric cars lithium-ion battery.

On a typical lithium-ion battery you can expect the equivalent of 1,000 cycles from 100% to 0% charge and back again. Getting to 1,000-2,000 electric cycles is considered good.

The battery test formulation from Dahn’s research was showing over 95% of the original energy density capacity available after 1,000 charging cycles.

Compare that to the standard formulation they tested with about 50% battery capacity left after 1,000 charging electric cycles.

Even after 4,000 charging electric cycles, the test lithium-ion batteries were still showing capacities of around 90%. That’s … kind of crazy.

One of the other pieces of the battery report that jumped out at me was temperatures. We all know that electric cars batteries don’t like extreme temperatures and it impacts energy density performance.

But it can also impact the overall lifespan of a battery too. These tests showed that this battery is very resilient and doesn’t take much of a hit.

Tesla New Battery is Very Resilient

At 40C (104F) the test formulation showed 90% of the original capacity after 3,500 charging cycles.

To quote directly from the battery report, “this cell chemistry is extremely tolerant to extended periods at elevated temperatures.

” So it really sounds like this may be the battery we’ve all waiting for, right? Yes, but not exactly ... because there’s a nuance to this that wasn’t immediately clear at a quick glance.

In fact, there are two things worth calling out. First, the formulation tested was a 5 parts Nickel, 3 parts Manganese, and 2 parts Cobalt recipe.

NMC electric cars batteries are commonly used pretty much everywhere today like our phones, laptops, power tools, and even some EVs.

It’s a very effective battery formula that has a solid track record, and the version tested has a specific energy density of 200 wh/kg.

The battery cells in the Model 3 are somewhere around 250 wh/kg. While these tested lithium-ion batteries may be able travel 1,000,000 miles over their lifetime, with the lower specific energy of the NMC battery, they won’t be able to travel as far on a single charge as the current Tesla NCA battery.

The difference may be something like 260 miles versus the 310 miles we get today on the long range Model 3.

Tesla Reduce Their Dependence on Cobalt

The second thing that surprised me was that the tested energy density formulation has more cobalt than Tesla’s current lithium-ion batteries.

And unless you’ve been avoiding the news on cobalt, you’ll know that there’s some serious issues with cobalt mining.

It’s very dangerous work and some mines, like in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have been exploiting workers. The rarity of cobalt also makes it very expensive.

Tesla and other electric cars companies have been trying to reduce their dependence on cobalt with new energy formulations, which is something that Elon and his team have talked about on quarterly calls in the past.

JB: "You know. Being on a path to reduce cobalt usage for instance. Has been something we've been working on for..." "For literally several years now. And..." "And this has been extremely helpful in the overall cost per kW/h" "Especially with recent commodity price movements." "I think we can be completely quantitative, but it's a pretty good trend."
Elon:"We think we can get the cobalt to almost nothing."

So with this tested formula using more cobalt than Tesla’s current batteries, it raised the question: is this really the energy density formula that Tesla will even use? The answer is most likely no.

As excited as everyone got over this report, this specific formulation doesn’t align with Tesla’s stated goals.

They’re committed to reducing or even eliminating cobalt from their lithium-ion batteries, not increasing it. And they’re also committed to reducing the cost of manufacturing their battery pack, and in turn the car, to make it more affordable in the market.

Cobalt is very expensive, so if you used this formulation you might see the cost of the battery pack rise by $400 - $500. Which again, doesn’t align with Tesla’s goals.

I’m not trying to be wet blanket here and make this report sound like it’s not worth celebrating. It _is_ exciting research, but it’s just that … research.

And This is one piece of a much larger puzzle. We shouldn’t expect that this is exactly what we’ll be seeing in our cars in a couple of years.

This could be a good fit for Tesla’s Megapacks and grid scale storage systems because they aren’t as constrained for size and cost, but that doesn’t feel like the ultimate answer either.

This report is surfacing some key findings around a single crystal cathode with protective nano-scale coating.

While it seems like the report may be giving up what seems like proprietary information with the single crystal, it’s important to remember that research like this takes time and is done in phases.

It’s about methodically testing the different building blocks of the battery to zero in on what combination will result in the perfect fit for a certain use case.

Tesla Lithium-ion Battery and Jeff Dahn Research

Jeff Dahn actually has a paper on single crystal vs. polycrystalline in lithium-ion battery cells from 2017.

So this current paper is an extension of that previous work combined with other research and experiments that they’re doing.

This latest paper was released to help the research and automotive community to demonstrate the latest lithium-ion battery technologies and benchmark it.

Battery research is extremely complicated and the artistry comes with how you combine these different techniques and chemistries togetherin the paper.

That’s the secret sauce. And that’s why, after reading this paper, it’s clear to me that there’s still another shoe to drop … or a couple more shoes to drop.

I have no doubt that Jeff Dahn and his team have research currently in progress on single crystal chemistries that will make more sense in Tesla’s cars.

Combine that with Maxwell Technologies Dry Battery Electrode manufacturing technique that Tesla acquired, and then we could be talking about the million mile battery in Tesla cars.

Something that lasts for the life of the car and is cheaper to produce. Most likely a formula with very little or no cobalt.

The big tell will be what, if any, papers Jeff Dahn releases around the end of this year or early next year.

And we’re also waiting on Tesla to hold their battery and drivetrain investor day event, which has been pushed into early next year.

This research paper isn’t the destination, but it’s a sign post along the road towards that destination. It’s a very clear hint as to where things are going.

A million mile battery for a typical driver is a little nutty. The average American driver puts on about 13,000 miles each year. That means it would take the average American driver almost 77 years to drive 1,000,000 miles.

Why would Tesla even want to have a car with motors and battery packs rated for that number of miles?

Which Tesla built for $50 million. In the first six months of operation it was responsible for 55% of frequency control and ancillary services in South Australia.

And by the end of last year was estimated to have saved $40 million is costs. Taxis and trucks will also be cycling a lot more than the average drivers electric cars.

Working and driving all day, rapid charge, and then repeat. Not the 10 - 20% battery drain, sit and wait, drive again scenario that the average driver does with a car.

The longer these batteries last, the greater the return on investment (ROI) the owner of the car or energy storage system will see without paper.

I was very excited when I saw the initial reports of Jeff Dahn’s research, and it’s advancements like this that show there are still big gains to be made in battery technology.

But it’s always important to try and look past the headline and understand what the research is actually doing, and to understand that its arrival in our lives may not be right around the corner.

And having said that, I’m really excited to see what Jeff Dahn paper has cooking in his labs that will eventually end up in our cars and probably powering parts of the electrical grid at some point in the future.

It’s research like this that is not only going to make our cars even better than they already are, but help to make a brighter future.

Tesla Pickup Truck Specs and Price

With the Tesla Pickup Truck announcement getting closer, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on what I think it's going to deliver as far as specs, design, and price.

But I also want to take a broader look at why this market segment is so important to not only Tesla, but the industry and future of EVs in general.

There are several EV trucks already announced and on the way, but which ones are most likely to gain mainstream adoption?

When the Tesla announcement hits very soon, will we be seeing something most people wouldn't believe? Or will this end up being a moment lost in time, like tears in the rain? Sorry, I couldn't resist a Blade Runner reference.

Tesla Make a Pickup Truck

It probably won't come as a surprise why Tesla wants to make a pickup truck in the first place.

In the United States, pickups have been the best selling segment for decades and the Ford F-Series has been the #1 selling vehicle for years.

In 2019 alone, the F series has sold 662,574 units. Compare that with Tesla car and cars like the Honda Accord at 204,463 units, and Toyota Corolla at 233,978 units.

The top 3 selling vehicles in the United States are all pickup trucks, so if you combine the Cheverlet Silverado, Ram Pickup, and Ford F-Series together, you’d be looking at a whopping 1,535,948 trucks so far this year.

And that’s why it’s not a surprise that Tesla is designing their own pickup. And when it comes to trucks going electric, there’s a major upside to going with electric motors over internal combustion engines: torque.

When you’re hauling or towing thousands of pounds of materials, torque is the key to getting the truck going.

It’s not a truck, but the Tesla Model X is capable of towing about 5,000lbs. That’s not bad for an SUV, but most trucks today can tow around 10,000 - 20,000 lbs, like the Ford F-Series at 9,500 - 18,400 lbs.

And being able to haul between 6,000 - 8,000lbs is in the ballpark for typical trucks today too. That means EV trucks will need to meet or beat those capabilities to win people over in the transition to Electric.

So as of right now there are only a handful of EV trucks that have been announced for release in the coming year or two.

Compare that with Tesla Truck,The one that’s getting a lot of headlines is Rivian with the R1T. The design and price of the truck is unique and looks stunning.

It’s targeting squarely at the lifestyle and adventurer market, so it’s more inline with Land Rover than a Ford F-150.

Even though it’s not meant as a workhorse, it’s still a very capable truck with 1,800 lb payload and 11,000 lb towing capacity.

Its battery options range between 105 - 180kWh, which gives it a range of 230 - 400 miles. Not that you’ll be doing a lot of drag races in a truck, but the highest performance version has a 3 sec 0-60 time.

It’s due to start shipping this Tesla car the next year at a starting price of $69,000, but will most likely start with the more expensive options first.

Still no pricing details for the performance variants, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ll be around $100,000, which is definitely in the luxury, lifestyle segment.

Tesla Truck vs Bollinger

In the same Tesla truck segment is Bollinger with the B1 & B2. This is a fascinating company that’s been self-funded by Bollinger himself as they build out their prototypes.

One of the things that I love about Bollinger is their very opinionated design, which is mid-century modern.

It’s definitely not for everyone, but it really makes a statement and will absolutely pull in some buyers. It has a large 120 kWh battery, but a fairly low 200 mile range.

That could be from poor aerodynamic design, but not a big deal based on who this is targeted at and how it will get used.

Again, another very capable truck with a 5,000 lbs payload and 7,500 lbs towing capacity. It has dual motors that bring 614 hp and a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

The downside: the $125,000 sticker price. This is definitely going to a niche machine.

But the big guy on the block that’s started showing off what they’re working on, but still has yet to announce a lot of detailed specs, is Ford.

Hybrid F-150 Electric Truck

They have a Hybrid F-150 coming out next year and have said that their all electric version is due around 2022.

They made a lot of buzz with a video showing off their prototype towing a million pound train.

While impressive, it was a little bit of smoke and mirrors because the math doesn’t actually work out to it towing one million pounds.

The YouTube channel Engineering Explained put together a great video breaking down the physics and math behind what was actually going on there

it’s still impressive. but not what it seems. As the top dog in the truck market, it makes a lot of sense why Ford is coming out strong and announcing this truck early.

They can’t afford to let any EV upstarts get in early and steal away market share. I’m a fan of Ford and am actually pretty happy to see them shifting in this direction.

Shifting to EVs for their truck lineup doesn’t just make sense for environmental reasons, but it makes a lot of sense practically.

EV trucks will ultimately be able to haul and tow more, as well as offer up incredible potential for powering tools at a job site.

It’s going to be a pretty easy sales pitch once they start to hit the market.

Tesla Truck News and Elon's Comment

If you follow Tesla at all, you have probably seen some of the crazy artist renderings floating around the internet about what the Tesla Truck could look like.

Most of them have tried to tie back to two things:

That very limited view of the truck's front that Tesla released earlier in the year.
Elon's comment on the Recode Decode interview.

- Elon Musk > “it’s gonna be like a really futuristic-like cyberpunk, ‘Blade Runner’ pickup truck.”
- Kara Swisher > “Okay, what does that mean?”
- Elon Musk > “It’s gonna be awesome, it’s gonna be amazing. This will be heart-stopping. It stops my heart. It’s like, oh, it’s great.”

- Elon Musk He’s also said that the truck isn’t going to be for everybody if you expect a standard looking truck like we’ve seen for the past 30 to 40 years.

If that’s what you want, this isn’t going to be the truck for you. No matter what, it sounds like this truck is most likely going to be divisive for looks, which got me wondering, who is this truck for?

You can break down the truck market into a bunch of sub-genres, but the two big ones are work trucks and lifestyle trucks.

Is Tesla hoping that people looking for hardcore workhorse style trucks will buy in. People who need to haul heavy materials, go to worksites, and power their tools.

Or are they hoping to hit folks who like to do minor hauling from time to time, light off-roading, and towing a camper for vacations.

Those are two very different audiences we’re talking about and if Tesla is designing a truck that’s too out there for a workhorse truck, they’re cutting themselves off from a pretty sizable market.

Of all of the Tesla designs people have been making that are floating around out there, I’m most inclined to believe the look is a seamless slope from the front of the truck to the roof.

Much like the Tesla Semi, but far more aerodynamic and sporty. Something tells me it’s going to be something closer to this. which was created by Justin James.

The designer, Sahm Jafari, who’s working on the Tesla Truck also designed an early Tesla concept, the Tesla Model Zero.

It won’t surprise me at all if we see some of that design DNA make its way into the truck design. And according to Elon, “It’s the best looking thing they’ve ever designed.”

Based on everything that’s been teased, we know that Elon wants to target the base price at under $50,000.

From Ryan McCaffery’s great Ride the Lightning interview:

- Elon Musk > “We don’t want it to be really expensive. I think it’s got to start at less than $50,000 it’s got to be like $49,000 max. Ideally less.”
- Ryan McCaffrey > “You just made a lot of people happy by saying that.”
- Elon Musk > “It just can’t be unaffordable. It’s gotta be something that’s affordable. So … there will be versions that are more expensive, but you’ve gotta be able to get a really great truck for $49,000 or less.”

- Elon Musk It’s most likely going to be a dual motor design. But beyond that it turns into heavy speculation.

If you look at Tesla’s track record, they always try to create cars that have no compromises and can meet or beat the internal combustion engine competition.

They don’t want their cars to be good for an EV, they want them to be good as a car or a truck. That means delivering something that will meet or exceed something like the Ford F-150.

This is just my best guess, but I think it’s going to easily beat the F-150’s hauling and towing capacity, which means something in the 20,000 - 30,000 lb towing range.

It also means a truck that probably has 800+ horsepower and will blow the doors off of any 0-60 time we’ve seen from a pickup. Most likely something around 3 seconds, which is even good for a car.

Tesla Armor Glass and Tesla Semi

I have to tip my hat to Sean Mitchell for this one, it’s probably going to have the Tesla Armor Glass they created for the Tesla Semi.

If this is a work truck, and has a very large glass windshield and roof, it’ll need to be extremely durable.

I’m in complete agreement with Sean on that one. And it will absolutely be capable of 250 kw charging speeds.

But I keep coming back to the question: who is this for? I’m not exactly sure, and it’s clear that Elon is just trying to make something desirable.

From the same Recode Decode interview:

- Kara Swisher > “Who do you want to sell that too? People who buy F whatever”
- Elon Musk > “You know … I don’t actually know … if … a lot of people will buy this pickup truck or not … and I don’t care. I do care eventually … I mean we do want to get gasoline and diesel pickup trucks off the road.”

- Elon Musk Regardless of who the intended audience is for the Tesla Pickup Truck, it’s definitely going to get a lot of attention when it’s announced shortly.

Tesla and Ford Competition

As the internet has pointed out: November 2019, L.A., and Blade Runner are the perfect Tesla and Ford combination.

I’d love to know if the timing of the announcement was planned around the movie.

Of all of the EV trucks hitting the market in the next year or two, it’s Tesla and Ford that get me the most excited.

Tesla is going to be pushing the boundaries of what we view as a truck, and Ford is going to be pushing a mass market EV truck that will meet or beat their own best selling vehicle.

I love the competition we’re starting to see in the EV space, which is going to give us better vehicles, better prices, and more choices. For us, it’s all a win-win.

Here is some Tesla Model 3 tips and secrets for this winter, whatever you want to call 'em that I got from some of my friends who live in some of the most extreme cold climates in the United States.

Electric cars, like regular cars, like many things, behave differently in extremely cold environments.

So right now with the polar vortex upon us in the United States.

I though it made sense to kinda talk about some of the secret things or some of the tips that you can really take advantage of in terms of getting the most out of your Tesla Model 3 in these situations.

the first thing in the Tesla Model 3 winter secrets is that your car will not be able to charge nearly as fast when it's extremely cold. The Tesla battery in the Model 3 doesn't have a separate heater.

So the Model S and X, the battery actually has its own separate system to heat it and kind of keep it at an ideal temperature.

So the Model 3 is a bit different, it doesn't have one of those. the battery will actually get really cold and at that point it won't be able to charge or discharge nearly as fast as it normally does.

The next thing about Tesla Model 3 winter secrets, is that you'll notice that the windows roll up all the way when you're in extremely cold environments.

and that is because in the Tesla vehicles if they do go up all the way they will freeze and then dislodge from the door when you try to open it. So don't be alarmed when you see that. That is intentional.

The third thing is that the actual Tesla charge port will continually engage and disengage because these little tiny prongs in there will get frozen again and you won't be able to charge, which would be a really bad scenario in a cold environment like this.

It's also really interesting to look at the data. Fortunately, through Tesla's, we've logged the watt hours per mile of all the trips that people take.

And because I'm an advisor to the company, I can look at this Tesla data and help shed some light and tell that story.

If you are driving Tesla Model 3, you're goin' on a road trip, you're wrapping it up. Before head in for night make sure you charge as much as you need to for the next day because otherwise, when you wake up it's gonna take a lot longer to charge than it normally would.

So hit the Tesla super charger or whatever before you go to the hotel and call it a night.

Remember, when you're driving your Tesla Model 3 in the winter you're gonna need to pay a little bit more attention and kinda prepare just a little bit more than you typically would in the warmer months.

But if you follow these tips, you charge up full every night, especially if you're driving and you're stopping to sleep, you want to charge before you do so, otherwise in the morning it'll take much longer 'cause the speed at which it can charge is much slower.

As well, you can't do the pre-warming if the Tesla battery is under 20% charged. So you definitely want to have that so you can warm it before you even have to go out there.

And be patient, because we are still at the very, very beginning of the EV revolution, of our transportation system switching from internal combustion engines to electric motors.

So everything you're doing right now are just lessons that you can pass down to future generations about how to handle the Model 3 things.

Hopefully we'll look back on this fondly years to come as kind of, you know, the novelty of having Tesla deals, with this back them because we'll have solved it just so dramatically kind of over-the-top by then.

How Winter Affects Your Tesla Range

So combined how winter affects your Model 3 range, we have over 2.4 million trips that have been logged by over 9,000 vehicles using Tesla's.

One of the interesting stats that we get when we look at this Tesla data is the watt hours per mile.

That is the actual amount of energy it takes to move the car exactly one mile.

So when looking at this overall, the Model 3 comes in at just over 333 watt hours per mile. The Model S at 383 and the Model X at 454.

But that's overall, that's not telling us much about winter driving versus summer Tesla driving. So what we need to do is take a look at this stat over time.

We started tracking this back in 2016 and as I mentioned, we have over 2.4 million trips logged. We did notice a significant dip once Tesla started delivering the Model 3 in greater quantities around July of 2018 which also coincides with warmer weather.

If we look at our overall trend we see a fairly flat line showing how the watt hours per mile changes throughout the year.

But there is a distinct decline starting in June and lasting through around October. This of course makes sense when we overlay the median temperature during this time for these Tesla trips.

And that kinda matches our perception, right? As the temperatures kind of normalize and get more agreeable the Model 3 doesn't have to use as much energy to move forward.

So that all kinda makes sense so far. But what we want to do is dig in just a little bit deeper and try to figure out exactly how much the temperature affects the Tesla energy needed to go forward.

The Tesla Energy and How Winter Weather Effects, That's what this chart here is trying to show us how the temperature effects your electric car.

Each bar represents a five degree temperature bucket, if you will.

So we basically logged every trip that happened within that bucket and then looked at the median watt hours per mile.

So that's how much energy it took to move the Tesla vehicle one mile when the temperature was in that range. And if you compare the best to the worst you can see that it's a pretty dramatic difference.

Where right around minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit when and you driving the model 3, you're looking at over 620 watt hours per mile whereas in the 60 degree Fahrenheit range we're at just above 362 watt hours per mile. That is a 72% difference from the worst to the best.

So when you divide those two, what you find is that as the temperature drops one degree you need .6 % more Tesla energy to travel that same distance, that one mile that we're measuring here.

If we focus specifically on the Tesla Model 3 temperature effects, we can see that this is even more dramatic.

In this scenario we have an average 4% increase in watt hours needed to go one mile per five degrees, per bucket that we're measuring here.

That means if you divide those two, for every one degree that the temperature drops you need .8% more energy if you driving the Model 3 to travel that same distance.

And I'm guessing that's partly due to the missing battery warmer, meaning you're gonna spin up a ton of electric energy for your Tesla tesla vehicle, just getting things ready to travel.

Or potentially just because the Model 3 is still new that there's still software updates happening and eventually this will actually become better than the other two models.

But right now, that's what we're seeing, an almost one-to-one degree to percent electric energy change as kind of an inverse correlation there.

So the temperature can obviously have a big impact on your Tesla car's ability to travel a certain distance. That's no big shock there. And actually, it doesn't even matter whether or not your car is electric or gas.

In fact, the U.S. Department of electric Energy, reports that fuel economy tests show a regular gas car miles per gallon, can drop as much as 22% on even very short trips in these winter climates.

The Tesla Model 3 brakes feel completely natural which is a stellar accomplishment for an electric car, and if you don't like the acceleration and regenerative braking intensity, vehicle creep behavior or steering efforts simply change them.

Regarding Tesla Model 3 Interior steering settings, with such a quick ratio the light efforts of comfort mode make it hard to steer with accuracy.

So don't use them. One last driving observation, there's a blind spot over the right shoulder.

In the US, we'll have the panoramic sunroof as well. That should open it up even more, although it might cut into a little bit of headroom up here in the corners.

Piëch Automotive, a German-Swiss automaker based out of Zürich and Munich, introduced the Mark Zero in this Geneva Motor Show. It is a high-powered two-door EV with grand tourer aspirations.

Charging electric cars takes longer than fueling petrol cars. The cells in this electric car support an unusually high recuperation rate and create the conditions for the Mark Zero to be 80 per cent charged in 5 minutes, according to Piëch Automotive to be concept car for sale in the future.

4 ARCFOX GT Street & Track

It is one such car, powered by four electric motors generating a 1,020 hp in total. Thanks to it’s lightweight construction and staggering power output, the GT is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.59 seconds, just a reminder that is Bugatti Chiron territory.

Plus the high energy density lithium battery, provides ample energy for long driving range as more than 400 km (285 miles).

It’s top speed is going to be precisely plus 257 km/h (160+ mph) and it’s price is going to be around 1.1 million $. These specs I gave are for the Street version of this car and it’s a big part of the company’s plan to assert itself outside of China.

However, customers looking for a more track-focused car, can by the Track Edition. Arcfox GT Track Edition uses the latest Formula E technology, putting down a 1,609 hp. Sadly that is the only performance statistic of this car.

Both Street and Track Editions get an all-electric powertrain car for sale, which means their fuel type is electric. They have a coupe type of chassis and two door as exterior specifications.

3. ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH VISION

The Vanquish Vision Concept, as revealed at the 2019/2020 Geneva motor show, foresees not only the return of the Vanquish nomenclature to the Aston Martin range, but also tackle supercars like the McLaren 720S, Ferrari F8 Tributo and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo.

The Vanquish Vision unique Concept borrows heavily from the Valkyrie in the design department and it will become the company’s entry-level supercar. Like its brother AM-RB 003 ,which got it’s debut in this same motor show, Vanquish Vision is set to become a more practical and road-friendly version of the Valkyrie.

While the Valkyrie and 003 are carbon-fiber cars, the Vanquish will feature a bespoke bonded aluminium chassis. This "downgrade" is part of Aston Martin’s strategy to make this supercar more affordable and accessible to the masses.

This mid-engined supercar of Aston Martin, will be powered by the same twin-turbo V6 that will be found in the incoming AM-RB 003.

Aston Martin cars used to have the V-12 powerplant and the turbocharged V-8, but from now on this British company is going to build its own engines, rather than relying on technical partner Mercedes-AMG.

Aston Martin did not give any performance test results, but if it’s aiming for Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren specs it seems likely to be producing in excess of 600 hp with 338km/h (210 mph) capability a given.

When it comes to acceleration, it is expected the Vanquish Vision to be able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in less than 3 seconds.

2. GFG STYLE KANGAROO

A ’hyper SUV’ car from Italy is called the Kangaroo. It looks like a supercar, but with adjustable suspension, it's said to also have the off-roading ability of an SUV. The Kangaroo's ride height can vary from just 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) in "Racing" mode to 26 centimeters (10.2 inches) in "Off-Road" mode.

As a result, GFG Style says the Kangaroo can be used on any surface, from asphalt to sand to mud. Like many similar supercar concepts, the Kangaroo is designed around an aluminum space frame with carbon-fiber bodywork.

1. ENGLER F.F, SUPERQUAD

Whenever an automotive comes out of Slovakia, it's normally something extreme. Engler Automotive, a budding vehicle manufacturer based in Slovakia, has come to the 2019/2020 Geneva Motor Show with what it proudly claims is a “hypercar killer”.

Engler F.F. Superquad features a V-10 engine that probably be pulled from one of the two cars for sale in the market, Lamborghini Huracan or Audi R8. However it is fitted with the two superchargers to make the extra power, so it comes with a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). Additionally Engler quotes 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.5 seconds and 800 hp.

The Superquad is the first vehicle of it’s kind. There’s no cabin on this Slovakian machine. The driver straddles it like they would on a motorcycle or a quad. The vehicle is the size of a regular car but weighs a lot less, it is 800 kilograms (1763 lbs).

This 2-door, petrol car looks like a hot wheels toy and it will probably be more expensive than it’s rivals in the Geneva Motor Show, with a price tag of 500 000 $.

It was a big theme to make a modern, timeless, quattro muscled sculpture. We wanted to do the most sporty A6 ever done. You should really see that it's an Audi e-tron GT, but every new car of ours has a different way of speaking that language.

The A6 shows like the Audi A7 and Audi A8 already before, our new Family car face with that super-wide Singleframe. And it brings a lot of width into the car, but at the same time, also a lot of sportiness and a lot of prestige.

We managed to get the front axles more forward. We reduced the overhang. And the car looks super low because of a lot of cool features. So we have that beautiful, softly but still precise integrated quattro blisters, which gives the Audi A6 a really powerful stance.

The designer wants to have the Electric car as low as possible and as wide as possible. It's a really tough engineering, but in the end we managed to get a very cool combination of bringing it all together.

My favorite view is the three-quarter rear view where you see these quattro muscles. And with this kick in the shoulder, it looks like the wheels are even more out then they already are. The rear has this beautiful feature with this horizontal aluminum bar, and the rear lights, which have the biggest volume on the corners so it's really stretching the Audi A6.

We have many design departments for the headlights, or for the rear lights, or for the rims. And everyone: "I want to have this angle," "I want to have this angle," and in the end, it needs to have a nice sculpture which is fitting together.

So we managed to get a really dark headlight, but silver and really bright. So you read it as a really small object, but in the end it's a big one. And it's really communicating the intelligence of the Audi A6 with all these sensors and digitalization of the interior.

The shot line on the engine hood is a very complex corner because we had to fulfill a lot of pedestrian safety rules, and it took a lot of energy to make that real. We also have this typical A6 roofline with a super-fluent C post which almost gives you the impression of a coupe, but with the trunk lid together, you can still see it's a sedan.

It's an amazing feeling if you see the car for the first time driving outside and you see all the reflections and little things are going on, and it makes the thing alive. And that's what we're all dreaming about. We're creating a living sculpture. That's the best thing in the world.

My name is Reinhard Peer, and I am responsible for the charging program at Audi. For me, I'm working at Audi since 2011 on charging topics. Since then, we have 22 electrical engineers working on charging.

We decided to have a very fast charging system; we decided for the 150 kilowatt system. My name is Max Zoepfl, I'm responsible for the project coordination of our charging topics. This is quite unique, the normal standard is from 50 up to 110 or 120 kilowatts.

We decided we wanted to go a step ahead and set a new limit, so we wanted to go for the future with 150. And, you have to imagine, that whole techniques behind the cables, the contacts, and all the stuff around the cooling of the high voltage system.

Regarding the cooling system, it's really important the cells are always in a stable temperature area, so they don't like it if it is too cold or if it is too hot.

But the battery system is manufactured by Audi sedan. We decided that we use prismatic cells and pouch cells. So prismatic ones are like little boxes, and then you have also the other version that are called pouch. That are little pouch backs, we call it Audi A6 2019 price.

We had to find solutions to bring these different kinds of cell forms into the battery, that we are flexible and can use both of them. Regarding safety, we put a lot of focus on the battery housing, so we have a really strong metal frame from aluminum that we put around the whole housing of the battery.

And we put also a lot of different seat box between the different cells and cell modules that the whole battery system is really strong in different crash situations. Additionally, it's really part of the whole body of the car and it increases the stiffness for the whole car.

This year though sales of the Model S have been the worst in years, in January Tesla eliminated the night shift for Model S p100d in X production, and in Q1 sales for the two models, collapsed to just 12,000 units.

Tesla doesn't break down sales for the s and X, but if you assume half for the Model S, you'd have to go back to 2013 to find a quarter with less Model S deliveries.

The production of the federal tax credit definitely played a role, but also last year there were rumors around a refreshed Model S and X with renderings of a completely new interior.

Today the model 3 has a clean minimalistic dashboard that looks a little more modern than the Model S specs, with Mercedes the difference between a c-class interior and s-class interior is very obvious, you can tell that one is better than the other, but with Tesla, you don't quite get that feeling.

In the drawings the new interior features an updated steering wheel a landscape screen, and a very large single AC vent like Model 3, it even shows that there will be a second screen behind the steering wheel, which Tesla Model 3 doesn't have.

With the anticipation of a major refresh on an $80,000 car, it's no surprise that people were hesitant to buy a Model S.

In April, Tesla finally updated the cars, it was a great update but there were no interior or exterior redesigns, the new cars known as Raven featured a new adaptive air suspension increased driving range and faster charging speeds which were still slower in the model 3 though.

Sales for q2 were better but still below historical quarters, in California which is a big market for Tesla, sales of the Model S fell by an estimated 54% from last year.

In the past Tesla has been unwilling to admit that Model 3, is cannibalizing sales of the Model S by stating that the two sedans are in different categories, however, Elon Musk recently said this.

Tesla Moved Its Sales Strategy Online

Earlier this year Tesla moved its sales strategy online, but the website does a poor job at selling the Tesla Model S, on the order page the Model S specs starts at $80,000 that's $25,000 more than the most expensive version of the model 3, and twice the price of the standard range plus model 3.

According to the website, for all that extra money all you get is a bigger car with 60 more miles of range, and if you look hard you can see that it has adaptive air suspension.

On the downside the $25,000 cheaper model three performance, has a faster zero to 60 time and top speed, the model 3 even has faster charging rates.

The Tesla Model S may have a better ride quality, more space, more luxurious features, and a further driving range, and nicer design, but they don't really tell you that

Tesla hasn't made a youtube video about the Model S in months, and Tesla doesn't advertise either.

Even for the Raven update, Tesla just wrote a blog post, with Tesla having a limited number of retail stores, and not opening any more in favor of online sales, it's even more difficult for them to convey the message of how good the Model S p100d of today is or at least how it compares to the Tesla Model 3.

As Elon Musk said during the call, over the years the Model S has come a very long way, the Model S specs was introduced in 2012 and had a driving range of 208 miles, today it can drive 370 miles.

Over the years, Tesla Model S got a facelift, new battery charge time pack configurations, better auto pilot hardware, and much quicker acceleration.

Of course there were other small details, and continuous over-the-air software updates to improve the car.

But after Tesla introduced ludicrous mode, in the 100 kilowatt hour battery charge time pack in late Tesla's in late of 2016, Tesla is focus shifted to model 3, and that much happened to the Model S until the Raven refresh.

Elon Musk has tried to simmer down the fact that the Model S and X won't be receiving a refresh, and that Tesla just rolls out incremental updates.

However most people would agree that something big is coming soon, or at least has to come soon.

If not, Tesla needs to find a better way to explain why the Model S of today is better, especially when there are changes, it's hard for people to tell when the car looks the same, and has the same name.

Even Apple introduces colors for mid-cycle refresh, is like the gold iPhone 10's, so that people can flex about owning the latest iPhone model.

Even the Honda Civic, got new colors, different rims and chrome deleted the 2020 model, even though it's same car as the 2016 Civic. if it's going to be a better car that looks and sounds the same, maybe Tesla should create more videos about the Model S or start running ads.

I know that I just write an article on why Tesla doesn't advertise, and I know that word of mouth is great. but in this case, it may be working against them, because even I would tell you to buy the Tesla Model 3 over the Model S specs.

According to the tests done by the manufacturer Hennesey, this monster can hit 484.4 kilometers as top speed per hour. The Hennessey Venom F5 was unveiled at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 1th 2017. It is expected to be available in 2019 as the world's fastest car with 24 units and 1.6 million dollars price.

To conclude Hennessey Venom F5 and SSC Tuatara have yet to confirm their top speed with the Guinness Book of World Records, so the Koenigsegg Agera RS remains the official fastest car in the world for now.

With the help of Thatcham Research - the people who carry out some of these tests - we’re going to tell you.

When the Tesla Model S and Model X were previously crash tested, they were good, but not state of the art.

But now, with an outstanding set of crash test results, Tesla has really shown evidence of its super safety technology with the Model 3.

Tesla Model 3 Passive Safety

Let’s talk about Tesla Model 3 passive safety first - that’s the level of protection in the event of a crash, so it mainly focuses on things like seatbelts, airbags and the structure of the car.

In the frontal offset test results safety, you can see just how good the structure of this Electric car is.

Looking at the side and overhead view, you can see how the front of the car crumples to absorb the impact rather than transferring the shock to the occupants inside.

A big advantage here is the fact that it doesn’t have an engine, so the front of the car can absorb the worst of the impact without having to worry about a big engine getting in the way.

You can also see the occupant compartment is completely undamaged.

Naturally, there are restraints all the way around, along with side curtain airbags, and it’s resulted in one of the best occupant protection scores Euro NCAP crash test has seen.

The colors of the crash test dummies is green across the body for both driver and passenger - which is rare - and shows they were brilliantly protected in the crash.

But the active safety is where the Model 3 really stands out from the crowd with a score of 94% overall.

Passive safety covers what happens in the event of a crash, but active safety is about the systems which help the car to avoid a collision in the first place.

Tesla Model 3 Autonomous Emergency

The Tesla Model 3 Autonomous Emergency Braking system performed excellently.

Whether it’s detecting and protecting collisions against cyclists, adults or children - Tesla has all of those things covered with very high levels of performance.

There’s also an emergency lane keeping test, where the vehicle crosses over a white line and goes towards a vehicle coming the other way.

If the system didn’t intervene you would have a head-on crash.

But you can see the Model 3 pulls itself back into the lane, avoiding one of the most common and most serious crashes.

There are still some areas to improve though. In the pole test, the driver dummy has an orange chest, which is partly why it scored 96% instead of 100%.

It might not be perfect, but it’s still very safe.

In Thatcham Research’s opinion, it’s definitely one of the most impressive cars ever tested.

Especially considering the crash tests are so much more exacting now than they have ever been.

Compared to the Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace - both of which are rivals to the Model 3 - they also received 5 stars.

Why Tesla Model 3 Outscores the other Electric cars?

However, the Model 3 outscores them both in all areas, especially for Safety Assist. But it wasn’t only the Model 3 that was crash tested in the latest round of results.

The impressive thing about the Scala is that it’s billed as a value car in the family car class.

But even though it undercuts many of its rivals on price, it’s still great at protecting those inside during an impact, the other cars tested were all 5 stars as well.

The Kia Ceed had a good performance overall but only scored 88% on adult occupant protection.

That is still good considering the stringent levels of testing, but not a star performer.

Plus, it only gets the full five star result with the optional safety pack - it’s a shame that isn’t standard. Two Mercedes - the B-Class and GLE - both scored 5 stars.

And the DS 3 Crossback also scored 5 stars but - like the Ceed - it only gets that score with the optional safety pack.

Considering DS is trying to be a premium brand, you’d expect that to be 5 stars as standard.

So there you have it - another set of very impressive crash test results.
