Most people are interested in both cutting energy costs as well as their carbon footprint. Little things add up – find out how you might want to include what kind of kettle you’re using as well as making sure you shut off the lights when you leave the room.

Eco 3 Kettle- What’s It All About?

We’ve all heard the euphemism, “Every little bit counts”, but can a humble little kettle really make a truly significant contribution to conserving energy resources and reducing the carbon footprint of both individuals as well as entire nations? Seems unlikely.

But, before you put the kettle on, consider that in the United Kingdom it is estimated that at least 165 million cups of tea are poured per day. Across the pond, at least 154 million Americans drink a cup of tea per day – a number that is steadily increasing. So maybe that cup of tea you might just be enjoying as you read this does have a much greater impact on the environment than most of us thought possible – if we ever thought of it t all.

My kettle uses that much energy?

The amount of energy used to boil a litre of water (approximately four large cups of tea) is comparable to that used to run your refrigerator for about 7 hours. Add to that the statistic that most British households heat the kettle up approximately four times a day, meaning a family of four uses about the same amount of energy to enjoy their daily tea as they do keeping their food refrigerated for an entire day.

Now, multiply this by the at least 26 million British households (as reported in 2010.) What we get out of that equation is astounding – even if you cut the number of times Brits boil a litre in the kettle to once per day, the energy used is essentially equivalent to what one household would require to run their refrigerator for 182 million hours. You can do the math as to how many years that represents (doing so will absolutely convince you to re-think your kettle.)

The Eco Savvy Kettle

It begins to dawn on us that it is a certainty that the humble little kettle can, in fact, make a significant contribution to conserving and protecting the environment- at least when we choose to purchase an eco savvy kettle.

This is exactly what British inventor Brian Hartley had in mind when he designed the Eco 3 Kettle, which can save up to 30% of the energy required to fuel traditional kettles. In addition to energy savings as they relate to fuel, the Eco 3 also provides the opportunity to save water with their patented dual reservoir and measuring button that allows one to heat up the entire 1.5 litre capacity – or just one cup. Of course, being able to heat just one cup saves energy as well – but, once again, we’ll let you do the math!

Utterly Eco provides sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to the things we buy every day. Buy products such as an eco 3 kettle from our online store.

With any product that you buy you will always have a choice when it comes to brand names, types, makes and models and so it is wise to shop around and find the best one for you and your needs. …

With any product that you buy you will always have a choice when it comes to brand names, types, makes and models and so it is wise to shop around and find the best one for you and your needs. When it comes to a purchase of solar panels this really is no different and because it is such a large and important purchase it is even more vital that you find the supplier that is going to work best for you.

There are several hints and tips you can follow to make sure you are using a reputable company and by noting these you can help to insure that you get the best quality solar panels and the right installation for you.

Accreditation

One of the most important factors to bear in mind is that there are several schemes and certifications that your solar panel supplier should fall under before you consider working with them. For starters they should be a part of the REAL Assurance Scheme and the company should be registered under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. This helps to reassure you that the companies are certified and that they know what they are doing. A visit to www.uk.solarcontact.comcan provide you with more information on solar panels and find the nearest certified installer in your area.

Value for money

Shop around and don’t be afraid to get quotes from more than one place. That way you can compare between different companies and make sure you are getting the best value for money – although you shouldn’t always go for the cheapest. You should expect a solar panel supplier to be able to provide you testimonials and details of previous projects as part of their portfolio so you can be sure that they have the skills to do what you need them to do.

You should also expect to receive a full break down of any work they intend to do at your home before you part with any money or sign a contract. Make sure that this is a full and final quote and that you are happy with everything that they have included before you go ahead and commit. They should be happy (and able!) to answer any questions you may have regarding solar panel installation and the services that they are going to provide to you!

All in all you should expect a decent and upfront service just as you would with any product or service that you buy. You should know what is going to happen and when it will and what will happen in the event of delays or problems. You should know exactly what you are going to pay and what this covers. The most important factor is making sure you deal with someone who knows what they are doing so make sure that they are registered under the relevant schemes before you go ahead with committing to them for an installation.

A classroom is a social group that is constantly exposed to the educational influences of the school. The students make up a very specific social group that is governed by educational relationships. These relationships are based on the interpersonal relationships between the students but also on the relationship between the students and their teacher.

Even though the teacher – student relationship is strictly a didactic one, it is influenced by the other interpersonal relationships inside and outside the classroom. That is why the teacher has to be able to get to know the group (the classroom) as dynamic group of interpersonal relationships.

It is known that usually a teacher can not choose his or hers students and vice-versa, but the teacher has the task of building the group or the team if you will, and also integrate himself/herself into that group.

The role of the teacher inside such a complex group occurs on all levels involved by the educational activity:

Observes the actions and the behavior of the students inside the classroom, but also during their extracurricular activities. A teacher’s teaching technique should be aligned with the specific group he/she is addressing, which requires a careful observation of the group as a whole but also of each student inside the group.

Communicates scientific facts, moral and cultural values and takes notes of the student’s feedback. This communication is based on the curriculum but it can also be adapted to the interests and concerns of the students.

Conducts, guides, controls and evaluates the activity of the classroom.

Works on setting the student – science relationship.

Communicates with the classroom. The teaching activity involves a continuous and varied dialog with the students.

Cooperates with the students in achieving the tasks that are assigned to the group, such as homework, extracurricular activities or making decisions.

Stimulates the activity of the students by appreciating their work and efforts and guide them when they are having difficulties completing their tasks.

Coordinates interpersonal relationships inside the classroom, with the goal of building a strong and united community.

Guides the actions of each individual with the goal of helping students finding their purpose in life.

Characterize the classroom as a group, outlining its main characteristics and its development plan.

The teacher has to adapt is pedagogical behavior to the group he/she is addressing to. This behavior should blend nicely with the teaching activity and must make the students feel comfortable but also interested during the classes.

If you want to get your kids excited about learning, why not encourage them to enter their very own projects in a science fair? Science fair projects are fun and interesting for kids to create, and children take great pride in exhibiting what it is they’ve learned from their experiences.

If you’re looking for some suggestions to get your kids on board, check out the following biology related science fair project ideas. They’re projects your children are sure to love.

Moldy Bread

This easy science fair project is one that children of all ages can do. Using a few simple items, your child can demonstrate what conditions are ideal for mold growth on food, and document and explain the different stages and parts of mold and its growth. To do this project, dribble a tiny bit of water onto a piece of bread and place it in an air-tight container or a sealable plastic baggie, and make sure it’s completely closed. Find a dark, warm spot such as a cupboard or pantry, and stow away the slice of bread. Check the bread on a regular basis–at least once a day. Examine it carefully using a magnifying glass, and write down what you see. To enhance this demonstration, take photographs of the mold as it changes. Identify and label the parts of the mold and use notes and photographs to show what you’ve learned.

Balloon Trick

If yeast can make bread rise, why can’t it fill up a balloon? It can! This fun project can be used to show just how it can be done. In an empty plastic water bottle, pour in one packet of yeast. Fill the bottle up about 1/4 of the way with water. Add a spoonful of sugar, and gently mix the contents together by moving the bottle in a circular motion. Take a balloon and place it over the top of the open bottle making sure it’s secure. Place the bottle in a bowl of warm water, and let the yeast work its magic. The carbon dioxide produced by the yeast will fill the balloon up with air right before your very eyes!

Hyper Plant

Another great science fair project is to use two small potted plants and some caffeinated coffee grounds to show whether or not the caffeine makes plants grow faster. Add some caffeinated coffee grounds to the soil of one plant, and just add water to the other. Photograph the plants as they grow and date them so you can show their progress.

Grass House

As long as moisture is constantly present, grass can grow just about anywhere. Using sponges, children can demonstrate just that. Place sponges in bowls of water, and sprinkle them evenly with grass seed. You can use an eating utensil to press the grass seed deeper into the sponge. As the water is absorbed by the sponges or evaporated into the air, add more water to the bowls. In two weeks or so, the sponges will be sprouting lots of grass! Children can use the grassy sponges to build grass houses or any other type of structure they want to make their project even more fun to exhibit.

Ant World

A classic science fair project that always captures attention and interest is an ant farm. Ant farms can be built or bought, and kids can use them to demonstrate how an ant colony works together to survive. An addition, comparisons can be made between the ant colony and our human society to display the many similarities and differences.

Magical Webs

Usually when we discover a spider web, the first reaction is to quickly wipe it away in disgust. If you’ve never closely examined one, you probably don’t realize the work that went into them, and how they help humans by eliminating unwanted insects in and around our homes. Gently remove a spider web at the points where it’s connected to a surface, and carefully spray it with spray paint. Lay the painted spider web on a piece of black-colored paper that has been coated with a layer of hairspray, and allow it to adhere to the paper as it dries. The painted spider webs will allow their intricate patterns to show through, demonstrating just how effective they are in catching a spider’s prey. This in turn might give some onlookers a new appreciation for spiders since their webs help control the bug population.

Life of an Egg

Under the close supervision of a responsible adult, kids can demonstrate the growth process of a fertilized egg. A few fertilized eggs and an incubator are needed, as well as some general knowledge on the use of the incubator. Each day, have your child document changes as they closely monitor the eggs. This project is an exciting one for kids as they observe the growth process of the eggs until they are ready to hatch. Just remember to be prepared to care for the chicks as they hatch by making sure they have the proper environment to thrive.

These biology related science projects will undoubtedly motivate and inspire your kids to seek answers to the questions they have about living things and how they grow and survive. Displaying what they’ve learned at a science fair will give them an exciting opportunity to share their newly acquired knowledge with others.

How we use energy and how we view it is changing. The era of fossil fuels is drawing to an end and in its stead stands solar power, a revolutionary technology, which is illuminating the future and leading the way …

How we use energy and how we view it is changing. The era of fossil fuels is drawing to an end and in its stead stands solar power, a revolutionary technology, which is illuminating the future and leading the way in green and renewable energy.

At the core of solar power lies photovoltaic technology, which converts sunlight into the electricity needed to run our homes and businesses. The theory behind photovoltaic technology is simple but very effective, let’s take a look at how the process works, the products which use it, and its implications for the future of solar panel energy.

The Photovoltaic Effect

Photovoltaic technology works by turning solar radiation energy into electricity. A solar panel consists of a number of Photovoltaic (PV) cells (usually 40 in number) which together form solar modules. These cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material such as silicon. When light hits these cells and create an electric field across the layers. This process is called photovoltaic streaming. The amount of electricity generated is dependent on the strength of the sunshine.

The Power of Photovoltaic

The power of a PV cell is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). Usually, PV systems consist of panels which are installed on an existing roof, but solar tiles can also be used. Predominantly photovoltaic technology is used to provide electricity to homes, but environmentally friendly factories are also taking advantage and many of the street lights which illuminate our streets use photovoltaic technology. Electronic gadgets such as watches and calculators also use the photovoltaic effect and mobile phones which operate solely through solar power have also been produced.

The Future of Photovoltaic

The UK Prime Minister David Cameron has sincerely expressed his desire to make his Government the greenest and most environmentally aware in history, and he is not alone. All over the world, countries focusing on green energy are working together to improve photovoltaic technology. It is hoped that by 2050 the world will be unified in its effective use of clean energy.
This is possible because photovoltaic technology can not only generate electricity, it can also store it in a range of batteries which enables remote rural electrification in areas which are without a main electricity grid or where the cost of connection is prohibitively high.

The Benefits of Photovoltaic

In comparison to fossil fuels and nuclear power plants, Photovoltaic technology affords everyone a pollution free source of energy. It is a clean and green energy which is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. With solar energy nothing is wasted. Any surplus energy produced can either be stored or sold, and the panels themselves have a very long life and require zero maintenance.
Our old ways of using and viewing energy are self-destructive and need to change. The more people who become aware of the power of solar energy and chose to install photovoltaic technology in their home, then the more affordable it will become, enabling universal access to this cleanest, greenest and most revolutionary form of energy in existence.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to make the switch and go solar.

Solar Contact, experts in solar energy provide up to date information on UK suppliers and installers of solar panels.

The main reason why many people have started to grow their own produce is due to the fact that they will know that the produce that they are consuming is 100% organic. I am not questioning the various producers of organic produce on the authenticity of their products, but I prefer to be 100% sure that my produce is organic and not a marketing ploy.

Gardening tips – new method

While surfing the internet, I came across a fascinating “new” method of organic gardening called aquaponics. This method of gardening makes use of a combination of hydroponics and fish farming. This system is based on the natural relationship between plants and animals, which has worked since the beginning of time. The plants rely on the nutrients deposited into the water by the animals, in the form of the expelled waste. These nutrients are then absorbed by the plants, thereby eliminating the need for fertilisers. This process also benefits the fish, in the fact that the water is being filtered and their environment is kept clean.

Benefits

One of the biggest benefits of this new method of farming is that it requires very little maintenance and thereby reduces the capital outlay. The amount of produce that can be harvested is greatly increased and growth time is shortened. Weeding and tilling of your garden is no longer an issue, as there is no soil involved. From what I have read on the internet, by using this method, you would be able to increase your yield by 300%. The main factor that you will have to keep an eye on is the level and quality of the water. If these two factors are kept in a healthy state, then you can rest assured that your system will work.

How it works

The fish are placed into the water solution in which the plants are growing. This is the basis of your entire system, which is why you will have to ensure that the water levels, as well as nutrient levels, are kept in check. As the fish go about their normal business, they will provide additional nutrients for your plants. The plants, in turn, will provide shelter for them to reproduce and your “ecosystem” will thrive.

Materials

The easiest method by far of obtaining all of the correct materials would be to search and shop for them online. This method is quickly gaining in popularity and there are even a few courses being offered online to ensure that you start off on the right foot and enjoy the full benefits of what aquaponics has to offer.

Aquaponics can be done on a small scale in your backyard or on a large scale. With the correct training and equipment, you will be able to enjoy the organic fruits of your labour.

Saving Energy With A Programmable Thermostat During Winter MonthsBy properly programming your thermostat in winter months you stand to save a substantial amount of money on your energy bill. This is especially true for single family dwellings, though these principles will surely save condo and apartment owners energy as well.

The basic principal is to minimize the amount of heat that is produced when you’re not home or when you’re fast asleep and being warmed by blankets or maybe a spouse.

Programmable Thermostat Settings

The best type of thermostat is one that you can program to turn the temperature down automatically while you are away at work or snuggled fast asleep under the covers. If the last person in your house leaves at 8am then set the thermostat to a few degrees lower soon after they leave. Mine turns down from 68 degrees while we are at home, to 63 degrees between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30 while we are at work. Our pets are still comfortable at 63 degrees since they wear a fur coat all day long. They might even prefer it since we often find our dog laying on the cold kitchen floor all year round.

Don’t wait until just before you get home to turn have the heat come back up to 68 degrees. It can take an hour for even a small house to heat back up five degrees.

Using Sleep Mode

We are fairly religious about what time we head to bed, so we are able to set the thermostat to turn down to 62 every night at 10. When we feel the drop in temperature we know it’s time to head off to bed. Not everyone is as particular about bed time as we are, however. You’ll find a one button command on your thermostat that will allow you to put the heating system into “sleep” mode.

Many thermostats will allow you to set up the sleep function for whatever temperature you want for however many hours you want the system to maintain that temperature for. We have the sleep mode set for nights that we head to bed early to bring the house down to 62 degrees for the next 7 hours after we press the button. If we need it to kick back up to 68 degrees before the 7 hours are up we can press the “wake” button.

Turning The Heat Off Completely While On Vacation

I’d stay away from turning off the heat completely when you are away from home, during the winter. Even during a week long vacation we still leave the heat on, set at a very chilly 58 degrees. The common fear is that pipes will freeze but that’s probably a non-issue for most people. It takes an extended period of very cold temperatures for that to happen. Your house also has to be set up in such a way that it may allow for pipes to get cold. If you’re not sure then leave the heat set to at least 58 degrees.

Using sustainable energy not only reduces your carbon footprint by using renewable sources but can also provide you and your family with financial benefits. Governments will often pay those who use sustainable energy sources and sell some of that electricity back to the grid.

We take a look at some of the most readily available to those who wish to take advantage of the money saving benefits.

Solar Power

Solar Panels, also known as Solar Photovoltaic Cells (PV) convert solar energy directly into electricity. Solar panels do not necessarily require direct sunlight to produce electricity, but the more direct sunlight there is the more electricity they will produce. Solar Panels can be used to run all common household items which rely on an electrical current such as lights, kettles and fridges.

The size of your solar system will only be limited by the space on your roof or land and by the amount of capital you have available to invest. The larger your system the more electricity it will generate but the more potential it has to save.

You will typically be paid for the amount of energy you generate and use; any energy you don’t use can be sold back to the grid for a profit, depending on the government schemes available.

Solar panels do not require much maintenance and should just be kept clean and out of the shadow of surrounding objects such as trees and buildings. They should last around 25 years and the only thing that may need replacing in that time is the electricity inverter.

Wind Turbines

Wind turbines use the power of the wind the generate electricity wind turbines offer a good alternative to those who do not live in areas with intense sunlight.

Much like solar energy wind energy is free so once the installation of your wind turbines has been paid for you can start to reduce the cost of your electricity.

Again like solar energy many schemes are offered by governments so that excess electricity can be sold back to the grid.

In terms of efficiency you can have wind turbines attached to roofs or mounted on poles. Turbines mounted on roofs tend to cost less to install but the size and subsequent amount of electricity they can produce is limited in comparison to pole mounted turbines.

Wood-fuelled Heating

Wood-fuelled systems are also known as ‘biomass systems’ burn wood to allow you to heat a single room, provide energy for your central heating system or heat your water system.

Burning wood is carbon friendly because the amount of carbon dioxide it produces is the same amount the plant would have absorbed when growing. To reduce the carbon footprint of the wood it should be sourced from local suppliers.

In terms of savings there isn’t much difference between wood and gas, but if you are replacing an electric systems the savings can be significant.

Whichever system you choose there are many alternatives available to suit your lifestyle and geographic location so that you can get the most from your chosen energy source and start saving money.

I remember a lot of things from 2009. There was, if I’m not mistaken, a recession of some kind.

Avatar came out in theaters, and Ellen DeGeneres replaced Paula Abdul of the TV show American Idol. Swine Flu went from minor annoyance to nationwide health scare (and then back again) in record time, and Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both regrettably shuffled off this mortal coil.

Also of note was the tale of the unfortunate Madison County resident Ronald Ball, who claimed to have found a (presumably) dead mouse in a can of Mountain Dew he purchased from a vending machine.

I’ve read a lot of weird news, but never have I had a bigger spit take than after coming across this little gem (I’m not kidding here; I was holding the can). After a hurried inspection of my beverage to verify that it was in fact rodent-free, I continued reading. Apparently Pepsi has just adopted this defense in an attempt to refute Mr. Ball’s claim: according to a scientist (who presumably had nothing better to do that weekend), there was no way that he could have found a mouse in this particular beverage. Why? Because over the course of several days, a mouse so hell-bent on ‘doing the Dew’ would dissolve into a “jelly-like substance”.

After another spit take and a serious reevaluation of my drink choice, I learned that the case itself hasn’t been resolved yet. Nor is there any word on whether the scientist in question (who yet remains unnamed) was making the whole thing up or had actually attempted to dispose of a test subject in a bottle of soda pop, though it seems like the kind of thing that you’d be hard-pressed to fake.

Terrifying though it may be, this isn’t the first time that weird news concerning soda of one form or another has made headlines. The fact that no one really seems to care enough to stop drinking them is a question for the social sciences; I’m not really equipped to question it. However, Mountain Dew was the victim of yet another specious rumor when it was widely reputed to lower sperm count in males for a long time (a myth that was later disproven). Rat urine on soda cans was a big concern for a long time, though no cases of serious disease were ever reported. Presumably the rats in question knew the mouse mentioned above.

Coca-cola especially was given a particularly heinous reputation after a nasty e-mail began circulating that the acid in the drink could dissolve a t-bone steak in two days and an iron nail in four, no doubt prompting a few moments of spewed horror similar to my own. This too was eventually disproven; the acid in Coca-cola is called citric acid, but is so common that it’s practically not worth mentioning. The concentration of citric acid in Cocoa-cola is actually dwarfed by that of common orange juice, which no one claims is unhealthy.

Given the number of claims that were found to outright false or at least wildly inaccurate, I’m not quite willing to give up my Mountain Dew just yet. I’ve yet to find any lost pets in my drinks, nor have I ever come across a can full of rodent-flavored Smuckers.

James Moore

Using solar energy and installing solar panels has been around for several years but has been getting more and more popular in recent years. The green movement has sparked people to start utilizing cleaner forms of energy. Green energy is not only better for the environment, it is also cheaper. For most people solar energy is not the only solution for energy. Some areas around the world do not get enough sunlight to sufficiently light their home. Solar power used with electricity with help lower the electrical bill and residence can still be assured that they will have electricity during the winter months.

Are Solar Panels Right for My Home?

There are a few items to consider in order to determine if solar panels are right for a particular home:

1.) The cost of purchasing or renting a solar panel

2.) Government rebate programs available

3.) If the home receives southern exposure

4.) Usable roof surface

5.) Amount of sunlight in the given area

The cost of purchasing a solar panel is a huge expense. However, due to the benefits and interest of this product, the price has been going decreasing over recent years. People can even rent a solar panel if they cannot afford the cost. Renting a solar panel is also beneficial because maintenance and repairs are done by the owners of the equipment rather than the individual leasing it.

There are many government rebates available for individuals who want to use solar panels. These rebates can reduce the price by a considerable amount. The rebate amount available each year can change and depends upon the location of the solar panel.

If the home being considered to use solar energy does not receive southern exposure then it is not beneficial to install solar panels. Also installing solar panels in an open field next to the house will increase the cost of installation. The financial benefits will need to be weighed over the initial set up fees to determine if this will be a valuable investment.

The roof needs to have enough surface area to be able to install solar panels. Solar panels are installed by using a solar panel support. Solar panel support structures can stabilize any type of solar panel to the roof without penetrations, flashings, and they do not cause damage to the roof. As long as there is enough space, a solar panel support frame can support the panel even if the roof has a steep slope.

Some areas do not get enough sunlight during the day. There are other places that do not receive a sufficient amount of daylight during the winter months. For many of these areas, it is not beneficial to install solar panels because it will take too long to see the benefits. There are many places that see several hours of sunlight all year round that would benefit greatly from solar energy.

Solar panels are a great investment, yet they might not be for everyone or every home. Determining the benefits over the costs needs to be determined to decide what solar energy can do for your home. Not all of these tips will directly affect all homes so each home owner will need to do their own research for their home and location.

PHP Systems/Design is the source for roof solar panel support Structures and solar panel support frame. We engineer Solar Panel Support Structures with code-compliant design and high integrity.
