The Importance of pH Balance in Your Body

Correct acidity and alkalinity levels within your body are important for staying healthy. Our cells thrive in an alkaline environment. It is only in certain parts of the body, such as the digestive tract, that acidic conditions are required – in this case, for the breaking down of food.

The pH scale is used as a measure of the acid-alkaline level in the body. The scale runs for 0 to 14. Body fluids are considered acidic if the pH is below 6.4 and alkaline if it is above this level. The exception is blood, which has a normal pH of 7.3. The aim is to keep our alkaline level between 7.3 and 7.4.

The metabolic processes carried out by cells result in an acidic environment. We need to ensure that our bodies are functioning sufficiently and obtaining the correct nutrients in order to counteract this acidity and maintain a healthy environment. If we don’t, not only do our cells underperform, but also these conditions are ideal for disease. Specifically, we must not contribute to increased acidity in our systems.

The typical symptoms of acidity include: lack of energy, various skin conditions, depression, poor immunity and reactivation of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure. We can experience acute attacks of acidity or it can become chronic. Ongoing, severe acidity is called acidosis. In this instance one can experience a weak immune system, poor digestion, disorders of the digestive system and muscle aches and pains. In very severe cases, acidosis can lead to blood sugar and cardiovascular issues, obesity, circulatory problems and fertility issues.

Firstly, let’s look at preventing further acid build-up in our bodies:
What we eat is a significant factor in determining acid-alkaline levels. Sugar, coffee, alcohol and large amounts of animal protein (meats, fish, poultry, eggs etc.) cause acidity so, if we have problems with acid levels in our body, we should try to reduce our intake of these foods. Stress and nicotine also contribute towards acidity. The obvious solution here is relaxation and to stop smoking.

Now, what we can do about improving alkalinity?
The first course of action is to increase water consumption. This is required to stimulate the de-acidification process in the kidneys. (A general healthy living tip is that your daily water intake needs to be enough for you to pass clear urine at least once a day.)
There is much debate over which foods are alkaline and which are acidic. Suffice to say that most fruit and vegetables will assist with sustaining alkalinity. As always, the advice is to maintain healthy eating habits. What we need are the alkalizing minerals, which are calcium, magnesium and potassium. In severe cases of acidosis, you can take alkaline powder.

Finally, digestion is an important factor. Acidity is synonymous with poor digestion. Chew food adequately and be aware of when and how much you are eating. Also, don’t drink with meals as this hinders the start of the digestive process in the mouth.

At the end of the day, you need to be attuned to the requirements of your own body. Become aware of what causes and what relieves excessive acidity in your body. PH levels vary naturally, but you have the ability to adjust them for staying healthy.

Them stubborn, stubborn abs. They haunt men and women a like during swimwear season when the gut can no longer be hidden by layers of clothing. Even outside of hot weather seasons, it’s there to roll over your jeans and remind you that the second piece of cake was a bad idea. The skinniest people will complain about their stomach being pudgy from time to time—but it usually comes with little sympathy.

Most people have become fed up with their stomach to the point of doing hundreds of sit-ups and crunches, but this doesn’t last long because it rarely shows results in the mirror. Most people are motivated by results and let’s face it, the abs are stubborn and take time to shape. However, follow my advice and you will see your abs start to transform. I’m not promising you a six-pack next week, but over time, you will notice a difference not only in your abs, but in your overall health.

Your first step to great abs is a healthy diet. Unless you’re going through the drive-thru window and ordering a grilled chicken salad with low fat dressing, apple slices, and bottled water—skip the fast food for good. In order to build muscle in your abs, you’ll need to increase your protein intake. Make sure you’re eating low fat protein such as skinless chicken or turkey within a half hour after your workout. Protein is beneficial in building and repairing muscles.

Make sure to eat a small snack about a half hour before going to the gym. This will keep your energy up during your workout and lower the chance of feeling lightheaded. The snack will need to consist of fast-burning carbohydrates and be low fat. Carbohydrates are an important part of your diet because you’ll need energy for your workouts. I know carbs are supposedly “bad”, but that’s not the case. You need carbs to have a successful workout. Fruit smoothies or energy bars are a good choice for a pre-workout snack. Also, make sure you’re equipped with water or a sports drink to stay hydrated.

Now it’s time to start your workout. First, you’ll need to come up with a cardiovascular routine whether this is running, jogging, bicycling, swimming, aerobics, speed walking, playing sports, or getting on the elliptical at the gym. If you’re a person who prefers the outdoors, don’t torture yourself by getting on a treadmill for 40 minutes. You’re the judge to what cardio routine you’re going to benefit the most from and what you’ll be most motivated to do. No matter how much you hate doing cardio, you really don’t have a choice if you want to see results. Cardio burns fat and you’ll need to rid yourself of the excess fat before the muscles of your abs will show. You can do as many sit-ups as your body will allow, but until something is done about the outer layer, nothing will shine through. You’ll want to do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio, five times per week.

Here are workouts for your abs that you should do every other day.

First, is the bicycle:

• Lie flat on your back with your head and shoulders lifted slightly off the floor.
• Bring your hands to the side of your head (either cup your ears or place hands slightly behind ears)
• Keeping your left leg straight and approximately 6 inches from the ground, bend your right leg at the knee and have your left elbow meet with your right knee.
• Alternate so your right elbow is now meeting your left knee (your right leg should now be straight and approximately 6 inches from the ground).
• Your legs should be doing a pedaling motion, just as they would on a bike. Your body should twist as your knees and elbows meet.
• Repeat with slow and controlled movements.
• Complete four sets of twelve. To add resistance, add ankle weights.

Next are traditional crunches:
• Start by lying on your back.
• Bend your knees and keep your feet flat on the ground at all times. Your feet should be approximately 10 inches from your rear.
• Cross your arms in front of you and bring your crossed arms to your chest.
• Inhale and in a slow, controlled movement, use your abs to lift your body from the floor while keeping your lower back pressed firmly to the floor. Your butt, lower back, and feet should not leave the floor. (While bringing the top portion of your body up, make sure your chin is not tucked into your chest. Imagine an invisible tennis ball between your neck and chest or place your fist under your chin).
• Exhale once the top part of your body is off the floor. Inhale as you lower your body back down to the floor (keep your head about two inches from touching the floor).
• Repeat for four sets of twelve. Remember to use a slow and controlled rhythm. For a more intense workout, bring a medicine ball or dumbbell to your chest.

Next are side crunches:
• Lie on your side with your needs bent. The side of your inner right knee should be on top of your inner left knee.
• Place your right hand to your head, touching behind your right ear (or you can cup your ear with your hand).
• Place your left hand onto the right side of your waist.
• Same rules apply as they did to the traditional crunches. Lift the top portion of your body while your left hip stays on the ground.
• Do your best to keep your legs on the ground. You should not be swinging yourself up with your legs. The resistance should be in the side of your abdominals.
• Complete four sets of twelve. Add resistance by holding a dumbbell with the hand behind your ear.
• Switch sides and complete four sets of twelve again.

Finally, the reverse crunch:

• Lie flat with your back on the floor and your hands to your sides. The palms of your hand should be facing the floor.
• Bring your legs up to a 90 degree angle and bend your knees slightly towards your chest. You can cross your feet or keep you feet together.
• Using your abdominal muscles, bring your hips off the floor so your feet lift towards the ceiling.
• Do not use your legs to swing your hips off the floor. This is a slow and controlled movement.
• Bring your hips back down to the floor.

These are a few of my favorites because they work the upper, lower, and side abdominals.

In a dream world, we can all get rock hard abs by keeping to our current lifestyles and popping in an 8 Minute Abs workout DVD. In all actuality, it takes hard work and commitment to get the stomach results you are looking for.

In the past decade, yoga has emerged as a popular fitness choice for those looking to increase their relaxation and balance the mind, body, and soul. Yoga is more than just trendy pants and mats; it’s a discipline with many rewarding health benefits.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine explains yoga as a mind-body practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. The many poses that yoga offers allows the body to bend in ways it normally wouldn’t while stretching muscles and balancing the body. Although there are beginner poses, the more advanced poses are very difficult to do without falling over, so it’s best to start easy and work your way up.

Yoga improves physical and psychological conditions because it helps relieve tense muscles, decreases the chances of someone developing cardiovascular disease, reduces stress and anxiety, improves flexibility, and decreases breathing and heart rate. This practice is also known for massaging the body’s organs, toning muscles, improving posture, and increasing lung capacity.

When I first became familiar with yoga, it was the extreme flexibility that really stood out, such as the pictures of women putting the bottom of their foot on the back of their head. Increased flexibility is definitely one of the main benefit and you’re never too old to improve your flexibility. According to the American Council of Exercise, flexibility training allows for greater freedom of movement, releases muscle tension and soreness, as well as reduces the risk of injury. There are so many ways of stretching your muscles that you learn with yoga and it feels great when they’re stretching.

Although yoga has risen in popularity over the past decade, it’s not a new form of exercise. Yoga was written more than 2,000 years ago, but has been practiced as early as 5,000 years ago. The early written descriptions are written in Sanskrit which is a classic language of India. Yoga was originally developed as a method of discipline to help people reach spiritual enlightenment, which is still one of the uses today.

Yoga is readily available in most cities with more than 50,000 citizens, but if you’re from a smaller community, you may find the classes are nonexistent. On the bright side, there are numerous yoga DVDs and even television shows that give you the opportunity to do yoga at home. There are also plenty of websites dedicated to the practice, so you’re able to find poses, as well as demonstrations online. Even if your local gym doesn’t offer classes, sometimes the local YMCA or YWCA will have yoga classes available.

So, next time you’re tired of your workout routine and looking for a change, give yoga a try. It’s never too late to learn how to breathe.

It has been one of those weeks that could make a person curl into a ball and shut out the world. Maybe it’s been a hard day at the office or a significant other has suddenly lost interest. Whatever the problems are, they can seriously hurt a person’s outlook on life and cause a lot of stress. For some, this would be the time to call a counselor. For others, it’s time to make an appointment at their favorite salon.

According to Queensland University of Technology, counseling gives people someone to talk to about stress, personal development, relationship issues, and finances. Basically, a counselor gives you a professional to talk to about personal issues in a safe environment. The professional benefits of counseling seem quite similar to why people enjoy going to cosmetologists.

In a salon setting, if a client gets a stylist they are comfortable with, not only are they getting a confidence boost by improving their self image, but they also have somebody there to listen to their problems. Self-confidence, improved self esteem, less stress, and just an overall satisfactory view of life are just a few of the benefits offered from both counseling and a salon visit.

There are a lot of reasons people talk to their stylists, but each client may have a different rational. Many go to their hairstylists about once a month because the pampering makes them feel better physically and emotionally. Since stylists are not around all the time, opening up is easier because the stylist is not going to pick sides to a topic. People may be more comfortable talking to their stylists because of this objectivity. Letting feelings out, relieves stress and just makes a person feel better. There are times a person should skip the stylist and seek professional help from a licensed therapist.

If a person feels they need some type of response, reassurance, or is having severe mental issues then a trained professional will be needed. Light issues can be talked to with a stylist, but heavy issues need to be discussed with a therapist. A light issue could be boyfriend troubles, arguments with friends, and spending issues, but heavier issues refer to trouble with substance use, trouble with the law, deep emotional family issues, depression and other mental health problems.

Confidentiality is also something people should be mindful of when talking to a stylist. If the stylist and the client share any friends or social life, then that intimate discussion may come back to haunt them. When people share personal things about their life to anyone, excluding therapists, they run the risk of having that person tell someone.

Although there are topics that a therapist may be a better option for, being able to share your feelings openly is a great mental tool. So next time you’re feeling a bit under the weather, try making an appointment at your local salon. Based on others experiences, you may find a little pampering and a person to vent to was just what the doctor ordered.

You love him, but you would also love to fit into your bikini this summer. You hate missing your Tuesday night spinning class, but it’s the only day he has off to spend time with you. If these scenarios sound familiar, then you’re experiencing a dilemma many women face: the challenge of balancing their love and fitness life. Perhaps sometimes the two seem at odds with each other. Your significant other wants to eat pizza and stay in, you want to grab a cucumber sandwich and follow it with a brisk walk. Overall, you adore your significant other, but you would like to keep your figure also without jeopardizing your relationship. Lucky for you, leading a healthy active lifestyle does not necessarily mean having to sacrifice your relationship. In fact, both your fitness life and your love life can exist in harmony, just try to incorporate the tips below to achieve relationship and fitness accord.

Tip #1: Exercise Together

You and your beau will find that quality time together can easily come in the form of working out. Take turns coming up with fun activities to try out together and be sure to pack healthy snacks for any outings you may have planned. Be sure to vary the activities to ensure boredom doesn’t occur, and spice things up a little with a few extreme sports adventures or an eco-trip to an exotic locale where bike trails and scuba diving reign supreme.

Tip #2: Cook Together or Cook For Each Other

Cooking a nutritious meal together can be both romantic and delicious. Try out healthy recipes and create a signature dish that belongs to just the two of you. Incorporate foods that are both sexy and healthy such as dark chocolate covered strawberries that are all around great for your heart.

Tip #3: Learn to Say “No”

Yes, it may hurt his feelings and yes, it may start an argument, but tell your significant other that you would rather not go with him to the chili dog or the beer tasting festival. If he insists, then try the following tip…

Tip #4: Clearly Communicate Your Goals and How He Can Help You Meet Them

Believe it or not, your significant other may be completely clueless about your workout regiment and eating habits. He may just believe that you’re naturally toned with flawless skin: He most likely hasn’t even noticed that you work out an hour everyday to prevent yourself from gaining weight and that you refrain from eating sugar and simple carbohydrates, because sugar breaks out your skin. Well, it may be time to confess. If he knows that you work hard to keep your figure and that you need his help by not tempting you with chocolates and junk food, then he’ll change his behavior accordingly to respect your needs.

Tip#5: Be Flexible and Willing to Compromise, but Stand Firm

Maybe your significant other is a world famous Southern chef, with a knack for making delicious dishes with butter and pork, and as long as you don’t have any religious reservations, it’s OK to indulge him now and then, as long as you truly don’t mind. Relationships after all are about compromise and a fat-laden bite or two will not greatly affect your overall health in the long-run.

Keep the above tips in mind as you balance your relationship, diet, and exercise routine, and above all else, try to meet each other at least half way.

Fad Dieters and Compulsive Exercisers

As Americans, we are exposed to thousands of healthy eating and exercise tips every day. Nearly all daytime talk show hosts have aired episodes instructing viewers on how to lose weight, choose healthy foods, exercise, and follow a multitude of other healthy living tips. Unfortunately, some of us tend to take healthy living too far. You may be asking yourself: How can you go too far when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle? Well, in answer to that question, the two most common examples of going too far include fad dieting and compulsive exercising.

Fad-Dieting and Yo-Yo Dieters

Let’s begin with the first group: the fad and “yo-yo” dieters. As the name implies, these are individuals that jump from one diet to the next. You know who they are. They’ve tried every diet in the book: Atkins, Mediterranean, South Beach, Acai Berry, etc. They are those individuals most likely waiting for the next big diet craze to hit the media, so that you can try that one also. These individuals are diet trend followers and the problem with following trends is that they change and unlike a fashion trend where you’re just stuck looking slightly awkward if the trend doesn’t suit you, in the fitness world, you’re stuck with a slower metabolism as a result of following a “diet” trend.

Moreover, fad dieting deprives your body of what it needs to survive. Many of the diets out there ask individuals to give up healthy foods and healthy eating habits in order to lose weight. Isn’t that counterintuitive? In order to be healthy, shouldn’t you eat healthy foods? The answer is yes, but too many diets tell individuals to give up eating green vegetables, carbohydrates, and foods full of cancer fighting antioxidants just to lose a few pounds a week. Your body needs carbohydrates; in fact, glucose which is found in carbohydrates, is the only form of energy your brain uses to function. Ever wonder why you’re not at your best when you’re hungry? Blame the diet you’re on and do yourself a favor: exchange the diet mentality for a healthy lifestyle mentality and you’re bound to reap all the health benefits that come along. And now on to villain number two: over-exercising.

Compulsive Exercisers

Although the concept of compulsive exercising is relatively new and understudied, it is not a new phenomenon. Individuals with certain eating disorders are known to be compulsive exercisers, but someone without an eating disorder can also be identified as a compulsive exerciser. A compulsive exerciser is an individual who allows their exercise regiment and desire to work out to take over their life. These over-exercisers work out despite afflictions from pain and injuries with a single mindedness that leaves no room for any other options. As a result, being a compulsive exerciser can lead to further injuries and other health problems and is associated with a poor body image.

The CDC recommends two hours and a half of moderately intense aerobic activity, such as speed walking, but besides this recommendation there really isn’t a range or scale that measures “too much” exercise. Frankly, if working out is all one can think about or commit to, then the boundary between a healthy fitness routine and an obsession has been crossed.

Overall, it’s about moderation. Watch what you eat, but do not live on and off of diets. Be sure to exercise, but not to the point where exercise is controlling your life. A healthier you will mean some sacrifices, but none of them should be detrimental to your health!

After running a 7 minute mile, or blasting through a super exhausting kickboxing session, you’re probably congratulating yourself on a job well done. And well, you should. Perhaps you’ve worked strenuously to get to the point where you were able to run at all, let alone run a mile in less than ten minutes. And let’s face it, kickboxing most likely used to leave you gasping for breath and thirsting for a sip of water, but now you’re a kickboxing powerhouse with endless energy. But before you completely rest on your laurels, keep in mind that your body constantly needs to be challenged, especially if you have yet to reach your weight loss goals. So how do you know when it’s time to take fitness to the next level? Well, below are examples of a few signs that it’s time to “up the ante.”

Sign #1: You’ve improved your completion time by several minutes

Remember when it took you 25 minutes to complete 5 miles on a stationary bike, but now it takes you 15? This is a sure sign that you’re ready to move on to the next level, either by adding distance to your workout routine, making it more challenging, or a mixture of both. So celebrate your victory, but also look for ways to further challenge yourself.

Sign #2: Before, you pushed yourself through exhaustion to finish, but now you push yourself through boredom to just stay awake

If a forty five minute spinning session used to test your endurance and stamina, but now you find yourself just trying to keep your eyes open while pedaling, then it’s a sure sign it’s time for a change. If your workout is no longer challenging or if it becomes boring, then by all means, try something new. Perhaps for now you’re content with one type of activity, but staying healthy is easier when you’re motivated by your workout and not complacent with it. Fitness for life means stepping up and facing a challenge head on, and not hiding behind what you already know.

Sign #3: “Ten push-ups? Twenty? I can’t feel a thing.”

As mentioned in the previous signs, once your body starts to become accustomed to a specific exercise or routine, it’s time to make a change. This is especially true if you lift weights. Instead of twenty tricep dips, try thirty. Instead of using your 5 pound weights for your bicep curls, attempt 8 pounds. To see results, especially when it comes to weight training, the muscle fiber must be broken down and built back up, for you, this may mean more weight, or more repetition.

Sign #4: You’re no longer seeing results

Perhaps the most obvious sign of them all, if you’re no longer seeing results, then it’s definitely time to take your routine to the next level. After a while your body learns how many calories it needs to expend to perform a certain task. Exercise is no exception. The amount of calories you burned when you first started jogging months ago versus how much you burn now will definitely be less. And how are you going to continue to lose weight if you aren’t burning as many calories? So if you want to see results, add intervals to your exercise routine or modify your routine enough that your body will be forced to move outside its comfort zone and continue to be a fat burning machine.

Food: Getting Rid of the Good vs. the Bad Mentality

How annoying is it when a family member approaches you and gives you a long lecture on why you shouldn’t be eating a muffin, a chip, or countless other “bad” foods? You’re probably already familiar with this story: You’ve lost weight, always exercise, but individuals are always monitoring what you eat or how hard you work out only in order to criticize you. Well, take a deep breath, and before you let them have it, pass them this article. For food doesn’t have to fall into the category of the forbidden versus the permissible, in fact most foods are perfectly fine for you, especially in moderation. But if you find yourself falling into the “bad foods” vs. the “good foods” trap, then read on, because it’s time to get rid of the love/hate mentality when it comes to food and just embrace overall healthy eating habits.

First of all, you need food. Your body needs food to function, so do not make food the enemy. To sound like a kindergarten teacher, “Food is our friend.” And gasp, even carbohydrates, especially complex carbohydrates are also our friends. So the next time when someone tries to give you a lecture as to why you should not eat your tuna with whole wheat bread, because bread is just “full of carbs”, just give them the evil eye and be assured that you’re doing something good for your body one bite of whole wheat bread at a time. Feel free to stock up on all the fruits and vegetables you could ever want. Be wary of the doctors who tout the benefits of diets that restrict your fruit and vegetable intake and run from the personal trainers that insist on putting you on cleansing diets of lemon juice and cayenne pepper. When you’re taught that so many things are bad for you and restricted to so few food choices by individuals that are said to be the experts, it’s easy to see why many individuals develop such bad relationships with food and eventually fall for the good versus bad food mentality.

Secondly, there are bad foods, and there are definitely foods that you should not eat in excess. Foods with too much saturated fat or laden with cholesterol are definitely on the “Don’t Eat Too Often” list. These foods tend to contribute to conditions that are associated with heart disease and metabolic disorders. Try to refrain from consuming too much beef or baked goods, as well. Products that are straight refined sugar should be avoided at all costs. Processed foods that are usually served in quick service restaurants are also best left for a once a year foray.

Finally, it’s not tricky or complicated: a healthy diet is part of the healthy living equation. To be healthy you have to eat. Are there foods that lend more to healthy lifestyle than others? Sure. But does that mean that cupcakes are the devil and bean sprouts are a gift from heaven? No. In order to stay healthy, it’s important to achieve a balance and to remember that moderation is necessary and excess is never sensible, even when it comes to consuming said “healthy foods.” So please eat your broccoli, but hey, be sure to help yourself to a slice of cake on your birthday (and Thanksgiving too)!

Exercising with a Pet

Does this scenario sound familiar? It’s 6:15am and you feel a little nudge on your hand courtesy of a cold wet nose. You turn over, only to have that nudge coupled with a whine and then a high pitched bark. Yes, it’s time to walk the dog again, but the bright side is that pets are great for holding you responsible when it comes to being active. Yes, he’s waking you up to get you to do him a favor. But in actuality, Rover is doing you a favor. Many studies have shown that pets not only have a positive impact on their owners’ mental health, but can also play an important role in maintaining the physical health of their owners as well. That being said, below are the top 5 reasons as to why exercising with a pet is a great way to lose weight.

Reason #1: You Won’t Even Realize That You’re Exercising

If you’re a dog person, then you already know how much energy you can expend just playing tug-o-war with your furry friend. You probably also know that you can spend hours playing with your dog without even noticing. Try extending your morning or evening walks and you’ll keep your pet happy as well as your body. Toss in a game of Frisbee and the pounds will be melting off, just from having fun with your pet. Most importantly, you’ll be more likely to maintain any weight loss if working out becomes your routine, and if Rover is part of that routine, keeping the pounds off is a guarantee.

Reason #2: The Company is Always Good

Unless he eats your shoe or forgets that he’s house trained, your dog is always great company. Imagine having an exercise partner who just wants to exercise and that’s it! That’s a pet for you: He’ll run with you for miles on end, without complaining or tiring. You’ll never get into a fight or a petty squabble! And when you’re tired and want to quit, he’ll be there to nudge you to keep on going. You can’t go wrong with Rover as an exercise buddy.

Reason #3: Better Yet, the Company is Always Reliable

Unlike the co-worker who promised to meet you for a game of racquetball and then disappeared or your spouse who refused to get out of bed to go speed walking with you this morning, your pet is always willing and able. Above all else, your pet will always be the reliable one. Do you have trouble getting up early in the morning? Consider your dog the most dependable and persistent alarm clock ever known to man. Trust that you will not miss another workout with him as a partner.

Reason #4: The Activities are Endless

Running, walking, Frisbee, swimming: These are all activities that you and your pet can do together. You’ll never get bored with your fitness routine if you’re constantly changing your fat blasting activity with Rover at your side.

Reason #5: Working Out with a Pet is Great for the Whole Family

Staying healthy as a family is easier when a pet is involved. All the activities mentioned earlier can easily be adapted to family activities. Walks in the park or Frisbee are great activities to get the whole family involved in healthy living while having fun with your pet.

Overall, exercising with your pet is an easy way to lose weight and is guaranteed to help you stay motivated to reach your weight loss and fitness goals.
