Vodun release video for new single, “OYA”, out now on Superhot Records

London heavy-psych-soul trio Vodun have released a mind-bending video for their new download-only single, OYA, released today through Superhot Records.

The single follows the band’s self-released Eat Up the Sun EP from earlier this year. While the technical, heavy riffing can still be heard, there’s a stronger focus on powerful, soaring vocals than the guitar driven EP.

Featuring two members of one of London’s finest underground bands, Invasion, who disbanded in 2011, Vodun have taken the basic blueprint of that band, added a huge West African voodoo influence and ramped up the intensity across the board. Chan (vocals) and Zel (drums) found a kindred spirit in Oli (guitar) and emerged as a more technically accomplished, musically aggressive and energetic band.

Vodun are touring the UK with fellow Londoners Ghold in June. Catch them live on the following dates for a truly spiritual live show.

Vodun Sign with Superhot Records for Single Release

Vodun, the ex-Invasion heavy-psych-soul trio from London have teamed up with Superhot Records to release their upcoming single OYA, on 10th June 2013. The band are hosting a release party on 7th June at The Victoria in Dalston, London (FB event here) where they will also show an exclusive screening of the video for OYA. The video and digital single will be available direct from Superhot Records, Vodun, iTunes and Spotify from Monday 10th.

Gurt - You Ain't From Around These Parts EP

Any follower of GURT's actions will have noticed that this year has meant a significant line up change within the band with Jamie McCathie (Guitar) and John Hughes (Bass) exiting the band at the end of 2011 to travel to foreign pastures to live. This has meant that new recruits in the form of Rich Williams on guitar (of Sedulus fame) and David Blakemore on Bass (who has filled in on previous gigs) have taken up the challenge of replacing 2 of the founding members…. And WHAT A JOB THEY HAVE DONE!!

Anyone who has had the chance to see the new Version 2.0 of GURT will now see how well the 4 have connected and a new found energy has been used into producing a brand NEW EP for all to hear before 2012 is over! In order to complete the transition in an interesting way this recording of songs will feature both Jamie and Rich on guitar duties and will feature 5 members on the songs featured...

Trippy Wicked - I Want Another Drink Beer Glass Pre-Order

I threw the usual questions at Craig from the band and this is what he had to say.

Give us a brief history of the band
Me & Trav we're in another band together, and when we decided to put an end to that, we knew we wanted to do something else together. So we started Wizard's Beard. I knew Dan from being out & about at gigs, and despite never really doing much doom style drumming (Dan's naturally a death metal drummer), he's very much in to that kind of music and wanted to give it a go. Once the 3 of us started to gel, I got in touch with Chris. I was a fan of Chris' from his days in Agent of the Morai.

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
There's been plenty of hidden gems over here. Although at the moment, there is definitely some not-so-hidden ones. Conan & Slabdragger are absolutely destroying at the moment. Me, Chris & Trav are also massive long time fans of Palehorse.....what a band! Undersmile, Khuda, Tree of Sores and the ever bizarre Sloth Hammer are a few others you should check out. Although they have now left us, Wiht were awesome. One of the biggest influences on all of us are Iron Monkey, a band that is sorely missed.

What are your plans for the future?
Originally I planned on us recording around October time. But now Trav has a little Wizard on the way, due around then. So I think we'll just relax and enjoy the process of working on new stuff together, and maybe look to record again early next year. There's nothing sorted with a label or anything so we don't know how we'll be putting it out, but we'll see. It'd be nice to get a few festival dates in next year too, so any promoters, please get in touch!

Where's the best place people can keep up with what you are up to?
To be honest, we've not being the best at keeping people up to date recently. However the website (Wizard's Beard Website) will be sorted in the next couple of weeks and we'll get the Facebook updated (Wizard's Beard on Facebook). So they'll be the places to look for info. If anyone has any questions, they can always drop us a mail.

British Underground 004: Black Moth

Black Moth; garage, punk and stoner all rolled into one mighty sounding mess. May 7th 2012 saw the release of The Killing Jar on New Heavy Sounds. Check out a track from the album below.

Give us a brief history of the band
Black Moth are Harriet Bevan - vocals, Jim Swainston - guitar, Dave Vachon - bass, and Dom McCready – drums. We formed in 2010 from the ashes of Leeds-based garage rock band. Increasingly seduced by the brutal and hypnotic lure of the riff, we emerged translucent-skinned and bleary-eyed from our cocoon in a sinister new amalgamation of stoner rock, proto punk, grunge and doom. We put our first single out on a DIY label called High Magick Records that we set up with James Atkinson of the mighty Gentlemans Pistols (who also produced the record) and then we met the guys from New Heavy Sounds. We initially did a split single with them, and had a track featured on one of their brilliant compilations. We have just recently (May 7th) released our debut album The Killing Jar, which was produced by Jim Sclavunos of Grinderman, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Sonic Youth, The Cramps, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, etc.

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
It’s hard to define what "underground" means but if we're talking anti-mainstream, Electric Wizard are about as unfriendly as it gets! Plus our good friends Blacklisters and Normal Man from Leeds, who kindly supported at our album launch, are relentlessly unpleasant and decidedly lacking the "X-Factor" whatever the hell that means. And for DIY ethics, hats off to Gentlemans Pistols, That Fucking Tank, Nope and Gum Takes Tooth - all killer pop groups.

What are your plans for the future?
We will be touring all over the UK this summer as well as playing a couple of festivals including 1234 in Shoreditch and Tramlines in Sheffield. We'd like to take the show to Europe again later this year as well as frankly, we've had the most fun in our musical lives on the road in Germany!

Alas, it's probably Facebook for most up to date info. But if you can't hack that, we have a website which we are rubbish at updating.

British Underground 003: Steak

London stoner fuzz outfit have recently self released their first EP, Disastronaught. One of the awesome things about this is that while the musical influence is straight from the desert, there is a futuristic kinda post-apocalyptic concept running through it. You'll need to pick up a hard copy from the band to read the full introduction to this story though.

Give us a brief history of the band
It seems like a lifetime ago when we started the band, but probably formed in around 2007. Me, Kip and Cam discussed the idea a few years before and every time we would get drunk we would say we would get it together. Anyway, we finally got around to a band practice minus a drummer. We started doing covers and our very first practice was spent doing a couple of really bad Sabbath covers. We realised we needed a drummer to try and hide the horrible noise we were all making. Large had agreed to drum for the band and we were off and The Ebbs were born (bad name choice and I am not explaining the meaning!) We did have another guitarist for a while but seemed to work out better with the 4 of us. We done one gig, butchering covers and then moved on to butchering our own songs... We had a name change and a batch of new songs and things have started to go the right way. We have released our first E.P since we started in 2007 so that says it all!

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
Orange Goblin are an obvious choice for us. They just seem a bit like a Stoner Rock Motorhead to me and long may it continue. Ben Ward is like the godfather of the British Underground as far as I'm concerned. There seems to be a real buzz about the stoner/doom scene in Britain at the moment. There are so many talented bands around and when you look at the Desertfest 2012 line up you can see what I mean, Trippy Wicked, Dopefight, Sedulus, Diesel King, there are too many to name and all great British bands. I personally listened to a lot of early Pink Floyd years ago and loved the obscure shit they would do. The double album ummagumma is just ridiculus.

What are your plans for the future?
We are recording our second E.P this winter for release early next year. We have been really happy with the response from Disastronaught and think it's motivated us. The new stuff I feel is another step up. We are using the same artist and expanding on the whole comic book story of STEAK. Each E.P will be another edition of the story. We are thinking about releasing both E.P's on a 12" record which will give the artist more space to create a comic or maybe an actual comic with the double E.P. We are hoping the physical records will be really collectable items.

Superhot Sessions 001: Stubb

In March 2012 Superhot Records invited resolvefilm to come and film Stubb performing a live and slightly reworked take of Hard Hearted Woman. This is the first of the Superhot Sessions.

Every now and then we're going to invite one of our bands or a just a band we really dig to come and perform live for us. We'll film it, record it and throw it out there so anyone, no matter what corner of the planet they're on, can see what that band is really about. Give us a brief history of the band
We formed in 2008 in coming out of our previous band Nable, we had a few lineups including different members on different instrements, but then we found our bass player rob in 2009 he was only 16 at the time and we haven't looked back. since then we have gigged up and down the country, released our self titled ep in 2010, and have just released our debut lp "Out Of The Dust" on our own label Button Mushroom.

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
Desert Storm, Undersmile, Agnes Pike, Komrad, Dopefight, Trippy Wicked, Gurt, Diesel King, Steak......and in the past......Acrimony, Electric Wizard, Sextodecemo, Jor, Orange Goblin, Cathedral.....there are lots and lots!!

What are your plans for the future?
To get bigger gigs! We have paid our dues by playing empty pubs and stuff, so now we want to just throw our selves out there and get bigger shows. We have a gig in September at the Anvil in Brighton supporting Karma to Burn which shall be killer!!!

Where's the best place people can keep up with what you are up to?
At the moment it will probably be Facebook just due to the fact that every mother fucker is on there!! but we are always doing gigs out and about, come to a show and have a beer with us! our gigs are like parties and that's the way it should be!

British Underground 001: Dopefight, Gurt

To some Britain is just another bunch of islands the other side of the world, some closer to home see it as an opportunity for looting and pillaging their own lands, to touring bands a routine stop off when trekking around Europe and to many Britain is the birth place of modern stoner, doom and all related genres.

To some of us here, Britain is the site of an incredible underground heavy music scene. It's a scene that seems to grow stronger and more diverse every day with both long established bands and brand new ones, raw and hungry as hell. There are many awesome underground labels as well.

This series will mainly focus on the new blood. They deserve more attention than our idols locked in contract disputes and legal matters and to be blunt they are now more important. They are sweating it out because they HAVE to. They are driven to do it, to keep exploring the riffs, the sounds and to create a connection between themselves, their peers and this earth.

Enough waffle, on with the music. First up I'm starting with a double; Gurt and Dopefight, two insanely heavy bands floating around the stoner sludge realm. They have recently self released a split 7" with name your price digital versions. Listen here:

Give us a brief history of the band
Dopefight is a Sludge/Stoner/Doom band and was formed in early 2009 by Owen, Paul and Ant and is based in Brighton, UK. To date Dopefight has 4 releases out and many more to come.

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
Fudge Tunnel, Ramesses, Orange Goblin, Dead Existence, Gurt, Trippy Wicked, Hang The Bastard, Witch Cult, Stubb, Astrohenge, Enos, Slabdragger etc...

What are your plans for the future?
We have a short European weekender with Your Highness next weekend (11th-13th May) and then a UK Tour in July and then the EyeHateGod UK tour in August. After that we will look into recording our second album and in the meantime a split 7" with Trippy Wicked will be released.

Give us a brief history of the band
Everyone but Gareth (vocals) played in a blues band called Rowse (think Gentlemen's Pistols, but the farmer version) and when on tour in 2009 whilst Gareth was filming the shows it was decided to try a horrible filthy side project which was first going to be called 'Gunt' but soon became 'GURT' to link in with our west country origins. From there we played the odd few gigs at places like the Gaff until we started putting our own Doom/Sludge themed evenings on at the Windmill in Brixton. It was then that we starting meeting all our peers in the local area and beyond playing same/similar style music and it really helped get GURT its name and build on a blossoming genre and scene! We have recently had a line up change due to John (Bass) moving to Singapore and Jamie (Guitar) moving to San Francisco so we have recently added 2 very close friends in David (Bass) who has played with us before and Rich (Guitar) who also plays for the mighty Sedulus.

What are some of your favourite British underground bands, past or present?
Past = Iron Monkey, Earthtone9, Medulla Nocte and many more form the late 90s when British metal was really in a good place!

Present = Dopefight, Trippy Wicked, Sedulus, Diesel King, Dead Existence, Slabdragger, Iron Witch, The Bendal Interlude, I could be here all day there is WAY too many to mention!!

What are your plans for the future?
Certainly not World domination but we have intention of getting new material out quickly in the form of a small EP or another Split. There are 2 songs that we have that we want to do something with but more importantly with our new line-up it's time to get writing some new stuff! Our plan first is to get some gigs under our belt and get settled as GURT Version 2.0 then see where we are at then….. It's all very exciting!

There will be a new Mix Eclectic up soon and also a page of recommended bands and albums to check out but for now there is Windhand.

This album is getting a lot of plays on Bandcamp from me at the moment and the more I listen to it the more I like it. The sound these guys create is absolutely gigantic and that wall of sounds is topped off by a voice that really sets them apart from their peers.

The vocals may be fairly subtle in the mix but you tell can straight off the bat that Dorthia Cottrell knows what she's up to. The melodies do a lot more than just follow the riffs and there is a character to her voice that is clear even in this setting. There's some conflicting information about when the album is out (1st March 2012 or 21st March 2012) but either way you'll be able to get hold of the record via Mordgrimm in the UK and Europe and Forcefield Records in the USA and presumably rest of the world. The self-titled LP was cut to tape at Dropout Studios in South London with Tim Cedar of Part Chimp.
