Asterios Polyp is the first graphic novel by David Mazzucchelli. He has been making comics his whole life. A super beautiful book.

The main character in the story is an architect. During his life his aim for simplicity / reduction is confronted with a holistic way of going.
In the book a figurative graphical style (like movie stills showing a situation) is mixed with a diagrammatic graphical style (like a presentation explaining a situation).

This advertisement card was dropped into our letterbox this week. Sale strategies in the housing commerce seem to become more close to car business where accessories form an important tool in convincing buyers. Free Radio's. New model of rimes for half the price. An extra line of striping on the car it's body.
In the advertisement of this new housing project (all ready build) is stated in the red box:"Uitbouw Gratis!" which means more or less: "Free annex!".

In the fashion industry it seems more natural to accomplish a design with accessories. Wikipedia says about 'Fashion accessory': Accessories add color, style and class to an outfit, and create a certain look, but they may also have practical functions. Handbags are for carrying, hats gloves protect the face from weather.
Maybe windows, balconies, chimneys and skylights should be seen more as accessories after all? Maybe architects do this all ready, but are buyers aware of this? Try your style in the nice cleaned up project below!

Madurodam is a huge model (build in scale 1:25) composed out of existing Dutch iconic fragments, organised in an imaginary urban plan.
A new context. The Rijksmuseum is directly connected to the Paleis op de Dam. And the Rietveld Schröderhuis seems to be reversed enclosed by historic city center development.

This program is invented by the Amsterdam based company: Frontier. The program is called "Casper". The data is coming from an ADS-B receiver on the roof of their office, enriched with public data from the Internet. This data is made visible with the help of Google Maps.

Parque Joan Miro / Parque de l'Escorxador in Barcelona has at it's entrances this beautiful tactile map for people with a visual handicap.
Like a common 2D drawing there are lines and hatches. But in this case these are three dimensional. The legend at the bottom of the map uses the international Braille system.

Looking around while driving one can see a lot of car navigation screens in adjacent cars. Who doesn't have one yet? Maybe not so strange: the images presented on the screen are amazingly appealing. The slightly higher perspective than regular car view, no buildings that block the view, only simple lines and surfaces*. *and the car that you really like!

This overview of current villa's for sale is taken from one of the latest more critical progressive Dutch newspaper (NRC Handelsblad).

According to the movie 'Oscar Niemeyer, A vida et um sopro' (2007) from Fabiano Maciel it's obvious: The master brings up an anecdote of a journalist asking him how he can project such modern buildings in such an old context of Brazilian cities. "What weapon would you choose when you would go into war" he counters..."an old version or a modern one?"

In Rotterdam the 5th edition of the Architecture Film Festival (AFFR) is finished again. This weekend a program of more than 100 movies related to the field of architecture were shown.
We only watched 4 of them (unfortunately)
"Infinite Space, the architecture of John Lautner" from director Murray Grigor was one of them. A super beautiful movie made in 2008 which was also possible by the contribution of architect Jan Richard Kikkert. He together with friends visited all of Lautners villa's. Google Earth turned out to be a very helpful tool for finding all addresses. In the movie a beautiful shot is when villa Elrod reveals it's position on the globe by the image of it's beautiful roof.

Nowadays, actually only 2 years later Villa Elrod from John Lautner, is easy to find with Google Maps. First hit! Let's hope the Streetview cardriver will do an architectural tour soon...

Yesterday we received from a Chinese colleague a Mooncake. This is for celebrating Zhongqiu which is also called the Mid-Autumn Festival and which was held this weekend (October 3rd and 4th).

It falls together with one of the Equinoxes of the solar calendar. In the Chinese calendar this is the 15th day of the eight month, when moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. Day and night are of equal length.
