Now, let me introduce you the very unique frame clutch made from mosaics. The designer is one of our customers, Frederic Lecut, a French mosaicist currently living in Alabama, USA.

This beautiful handmade mosaic clutch features an attractive starry sky and a romantic moon night. The clutch body is made from different irregular mosaic tiles and it matches amazingly well with the rose gold hollow clutch frame.

Frederic Lecut worked as an engineer for many years in several countries. In 2000, he decided to get out of the corporate world and try to live out of what he really liked, Mosaics and Martial Arts.

According to the original design, the Christine clutch is made using one piece of fabric for the exterior. To make this clutch in different style, you can use many pieces of fabric sewn together and treated as one for the exterior.

In this blog, we will share a new idea on how to create a stylish clutch in patchwork design with our Christine clutch pattern. Choose a print fabric for the center and a matching solid colored fabric for the sides.

Download and print out the patterns

Cut out the shapes and tape together along the center dotted line

MAKING THE PATTERNS FOR THE EXTERIOR PATCHWORK

Refer to the below diagrams, create 3 patterns for each panel of the exterior from the Christine clutch pattern A

CUTTING THE FABRIC PIECES

Transfer above 3 patterns to the fabrics, cut one piece for the center panel, and cut two pieces for the sided panels.

SEWING THE EXTERIOR PANELS

Put the left panel to the center panel along the side along the 8 ½” side, right sides together, using ½” seam, stitch and backtacking at both ends, press the seam. Then sew the right panel to the other side of the center panel.

FUSING AND ASSEMBLING THE EXTERIOR AND LINING

GLUE THE METAL PURSE FRAME INTO THE CLUTCH

Once you learn how to make the patchwork, you will love the effect it adds, and it’s easier than it looks.

Excellent as a travel wallet as a passport will fit in the centre of the clutch wallet.

Most important, our metal purse frame will hold the wallet tight and secured!

WHAT YOU NEED

Fabrics

• Patterned fabric for the exterior - 9 x 10 inches
• Solid colored quilting fabric for the interior - 9 x 22 inches

Other Supplies

• 8 1/4 x 3 inches metal purse frame ( SILVER | ANTIQUE BRASS )
• 1 Fat Quarter of fusible light weighted interfacing
• 1 tube of permanent glue (such as UHU, E6000, Gutermann HT2, etc)

Tools

• Sewing machine
• Iron and iron board
• Scissors and ruler
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Purse crimper or a pair of pliers
• Fabric pen and uni-ball pen

CUTTING THE FABRIC PIECES & INTERFACING

1) Cut one rectangle patterned fabric in 9 x 10 inches for the exterior.

2) Cut one rectangle interfacing in 8 ¼ x 9 inches.

3) Cut one solid colored fabric in 9 x 22 inches for the pocket and card holders of interior.

FUSING

1) Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of exterior fabric. Then press down the iron with slight pressure, lift and glide till all fabric is fused.

MAKING THE POCKET AND CARD HOLDERS

1) Fold the interior fabric in half along the market fold line 3, right sides together and press.

2) Referring to above pocket and card holder diagram, fold the pocket, wrong sides together, alone Fold Line 2, and press.

3) Then, fold along the Fold Line 1, right sides together and press.

4) Turn the fabric to other side, fold along the Fold Line 4, wrong sides together and press.

5) Then, fold along the Fold Line 5, right sides together and press.

6) Topstitch the Fold Line 2 and 4, 1/8 inch from the edge.

7) Stitch a line down the center of the cardholder to make 2 card-size pockets, backtacking at both ends.

8) Top stitch the side seams to secure it, leaving a 1/8 inch seams allowance.

SEWING UP THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR

1) With the exterior piece and interior piece right sides facing together, line up the edges.

2) Sew along the edge of the fleece, leaving topside unstitched.

3) Trim off the excessive fabric and four corners.

4) Pull the exterior out through the unstitched side, now the bag is right side out, then press.

5) Stitch the top opening 1/8 inch from the edge, then topstitch the exterior fabric along edges using 1/8 inch seam

GLUE THE CLUTCH WALLET

1) Spread a thin line of the glue along the channel from one hinge to another. Let the glue to dry for a 3 – 5 minutes. Then push the fabric edge into the channel of the frame, a flat-head screwdriver will be helpful to work the way around.

2) Repeat same step for the other side of the frame channel. Allow for 30 minutes for the glue to dry thoroughly, gently use the frame crimper to press along the frame for a more secure finish.

• 7 x 5 inch Metal Clutch Frame with Lock

Tools:

• Mat & Ruler
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Iron
• Brush

Step 1. Making the Cover for Book Clutch

1). Draw a 12 ¼ x 7 ½ inches rectangle shape on the thick cardboard.

2). Cut out the rectangle shape cardboard for the book clutch cover.

3). Center the metal frame on the cardboard, and fold both sides.

4). Trace the metal frame on the fabric, add about a 1 ½ inches seam allowance to the edges of fabric, cut 2 pieces for the front and back.

5). Iron the fabrics to ease any wrinkles, put two pieces with right sides together, then draw a parallel line about 1⁄4 inches from the edge.

6). Sew the fabrics together and iron flat the seam allowance.

7). Apply the craft glue to the surface of the cardboard. Make sure that the cardboard is covered with the glue evenly. Gently place the wrong side of the fabric onto the glued side of the cardboard.

8). Cut diagonal line at each corner which would fit together to form a crisp square edge. Apply craft glue to the edges of the cardboard and fold the fabric edges.

Now the book clutch cover is created.

Note: If you are using an old hardback book for making the book clutch cover, please make sure the book you choose is big enough to hold the 7 x 5 inch metal frame, and it has a 1 ¼ inch thick spine.

Step 2. Assembling the Metal Hollow Frame to the Book Cover

1). Apply the UHU glue all over the edges of the frame, let the glue dry for a while. Glue the edges of the frame on the book cover, then press the frame firmly.

2). Spread the UHU glue to the bottom of the metal frame, and glue the spine with the frame together. 

Step 3. Assembling the Frame Clasp

1). Cut a rectangle shape cardboard measuring 6 ¾ x 4 ¾ inches, which is a bit smaller than the frame.

2). Draw a central line on the cardboard and position the clutch clasp.

3). Cut a piece of lining fabric, which is a bit larger than the rectangle cardboard above. Spread the craft glue all over the cardboard. Let the glue dry for a while, gently place the wrong side of the lining fabric onto the cardboard. Then fold and glue the edges of fabric to the wrong side of the cardboard.

4). Apply the UHU glue on the end piece of the clasp, put it into the wrong side of the cardboard, and make sure it is aligned with the centre line and positioned in the correct direction.

Step 4. Making the Gussets for Book Clutch

1). Cut two pieces of triangle shape fabric to make the gussets for both sides. Apply UHU glue on the edges of wrong side of the cardboard and have the two gussets glued on.

2). Spread the glue over the wrong side of the cardboard, let the glue try for about 3 – 5 minutes, gently place it onto the book cover, align and ensure they stick together well.

Step 5. Making the Lining for the Book Clutch

1). Trace the above template onto the lining fabric,  cut it out.

2). Spread the UHU glue over the wrong side of the book cover, allow the glue dry for a while, then put the lining piece into the metal frame.

3). Apply UHU glue to inner sides of the frame, put the other side of the two gussets onto the inner side of the frame. Use a flat-head screwdriver to assist in gluing the edge area firmly.

All finished! All that’s left now is to style it up with some super outfits!

Now, I will share another enhanced skill with which you can make the clamshell clutch with the naked flex foam resulting in a soft touch.

The naked flex foam is great for clamshell clutch making, bookbinding, journal making, crafts, sewing and so much more.

What I like about this foam is the fact that it ends with a very soft touch on top of the plastic covers.

Materials

• Clamshell Clutch Frame
• Naked Flex Foam
• Exterior & Interior Fabrics
• Craft Glue
• UHU Glue

Tools

• Scissors
• Cutter
• Brush
• Iron

Step 1. Cut out two pieces of the naked flex foam, they should be large enough to cover the plastic cover

Step 2. Spread the craft glue all over the surface of the plastic covers

Step 3. Let the craft glue dry for a while, place the naked flex foam on the plastic cover and smooth out any air pockets carefully

Step 4. Trim off the excessive foam

Before the glue gets fully dry, trim off the foam along the edge. (Only applicable if you are using the thick fabric such as leather)

Step 5. Making the clutch exterior

• Cut out two pieces of fabric, iron flat;
• Spread the craft glue all over the surface of the naked flex foam;
• Spread the UHU glue around the edge of the plastic covers;
• Let the glue dry for a while, then wrap the fabric over the foam-covered plastic covers.

Step 6. Making the clutch interior

• Cut out two pieces of lining fabric;
• Spread the craft glue all over the surface of the plastic covers;
• Gently press the lining fabric onto the plastic covers;
• Trim off the excess lining fabric all around the frame.

Tips for Sewing Clutch with Lace

Sewing lace onto clutch for a decorative finish is not too difficult, here are some tips to keep in mind when sewing with lace :

• Trace the pattern on lace fabric, cut each piece individually so you can see the motif, and can match it up if required;

• Put the wrong side of the lace to the right side of the underlay fabric;

• Top stitch the side seams to secure the lace and underlay, 1/4 inch from the edges;
  

• Sewing up the exterior and interior of the clutch.

In this blog, I will share a tutorial on how to add a gusset and bottom edge cover for the rectangle shape clamshell minaudiere in right angle.

PATTERN PREPARING

1. Download the Minaudiere Gusset Pattern PDF file ( Click HERE to download ), then print out the pattern on the A4 paper at 100% print scale, and cut out shape.

2. Open the frame in V-shape, and place it onto the pattern as below picture.

• The frame bottom edge should align at the bottom line of the pattern.

• Both sides of the frame should align at the V shape dotted line of the pattern.

3. Mark the horizontal dotted line with the frame top edges, then remove the frame and fold the pattern along the horizontal dotted line.

 (Note: the horizontal line will be different in other frame)

4. Now, you have created the gusset pattern in an upside down triangle shape.

CUTTING THE GUSSETS PIECES

1. Trace the gusset pattern on the fabric and mark a symmetrical shape as below.

2. Cut two pieces for the both sides of the frame.

SEWING THE GUSSETS

1. Fold under and iron the gusset bottom edge seams ¾ inch (1.5 cm) to the wrong side. Repeat with the other gusset piece.

2. Fold the gusset fabric in half to match the edges, and iron it.

3. Stitch the top and bottom of the folded gussets, ¼ inch from the edges.

4. Place the gusset piece into the open frame, trim off the excessive fabric if needed.

5. Repeat with the other gusset piece, and stitch the both sides, ¼ inch from the edges.

GLUE THE GUSSETS INTO THE FRAME

1. Working with one side of the frame at a time, apply glue to the inner side of the channels, then let the glue dry for about 3 - 5 minutes. Toothpick is very helpful to spread the glue in the frame channel.

2. Put one side of the gusset piece into the frame channel, make sure to press firmly against the inner channel to make enough room for the plastic covers to fit in later.

3. Repeat with another gusset piece.

4. Glue another side of the gussets onto the frame channel.

5. Use the flat-head screwdriver to work the way around.

GLUE THE BOTTOM EDGE COVER TO THE FRAME (OPTIONAL)

To cover the metal on the bottom of the frame, you need to cover the inner frame bottom edge lip only.

1. Measure the bottom edge inner frame lip, cut one piece of rectangle shape fabric.

2. Fold and iron both short edges, 3/8 inch to the wrong side. Stitch along both folds 1/8 inch from the edge.

3. Apply glue to the bottom channel of the frame, then glue long side of the fabric onto the bottom channel.

4. Glue another side of the fabric onto the frame channel. Use the flat- head screwdriver to work the way around. Press firmly against the inner channel to make enough room for the plastic covers to fit in later,

5. Finished clutch gussets and bottom cover.

Gussets Making for Curved Shape Frame

After topstitch around the edges of the gusset, notch the both sides. Make it easy to glue into the curved shape frame channel.

The gussets and bottom edge frame cover needs to be added to the clutch frame BEFORE adding the plastic covers to the frame :)

In the earlier of this February, we had a tropical holiday to this pacific paradise.

The first day of the trip, we arrived in Rarotonga, where the capital of the Cook Islands lies in, the people said greeting with us “Kia Orana”, which means that “may you live long”! It is a unique first gesture of friendship from a special Polynesian people, renown for their hospitality and warmth.

Visiting in the Cook Islands, I found that the style and fashion is about color, patterns and prints from the tasteful Island dresses or muumuu to the hand printed pareu or sarongs.

Cook Islands’ fashion draws from culture, environment and community. The splash of color embodies the colorful life on the islands with their vibrant flora and fauna, the limitless ocean and the omnipresent Kia Orana spirit!

As a craft lover, I have found many inspirations when visiting the Avarua’s Punanganui Market, on every Saturday, this place is buzzing with lots of local craft outlets, including traditional pacific fabric arts, wood craft, coconut shell craft and last but not least, the Polynesian black pearl jewellery.

Step 1. Making the Cat Box Clutch Exterior

• Cut out two pieces of fabric, they should be large enough to cover the box, and allow for about 1 - 2 inches on each edges.

• Spread the glue all over the surface of the plastic covers, be sure to cover all parts of the plastic covers, especially the edges. Place the plastic cover on the center of the fabric, carefully smooth out any air pockets.

• Trim off the excessive exterior fabric once the glue is fully dry.

Step 2. Making the Cat Box Clutch Interior

• Spread the glue all over the surface of the interior of plastic covers, gently press the lining fabrics, especially at corner and edge, ensure the fabric stick well and smoothly onto the covers.

Step 3. Making the Gussets

• Cut 2 pieces of patterned fabric and 2 pieces of solid color fabric, each one measures 6 inches x 3 ½ inches, pair up each patterned fabric and solid color fabric and have them placed right side together. Now we have 2 pairs of gusset pieces.

• Draw a line along the edges and top stitch using 1/4 inch seam.

• Turn the gusset piece right side out, iron flat, and top stitch along the both edges using 1/8 inch seam.

• Position the cat frame on the gusset piece, mark two diagonal  lines.

• Cut the two gusset pieces into trapezoid shape.

• Top stitch the both sides using 1/4 inch seam, then notch the seam.

• Working with one side of the frame at a time, apply glue to the inner side of the channels, then let the glue dry for about 3 - 5 minutes, only when you find that the glue is sticky should you glue the gussets onto the frame channel, and make sure to press firmly against the inner channel.

• A flat-head screwdriver will be helpful to work the way around.

• Apply glue to another side of frame channel, put the other side of gusset piece into the frame channel.

• Again, apply glue inside the frame channel, be careful not to drip any glue onto the gusset fabrics. Put the covers into the metal frame, be noted that the indented cover goes into the side with the locking mechanism. Once the covers are put into the frame, weigh the whole clutch down with a book or other object to ensure that the covers are fully immersed in the glue filled channel.

Now the clutch is finished !!!
