Moreover, and incredibly, after all the aforesaid, God also created man, both male and female, and then declared that creation was "very good".

It is also rumored that somewhere along the line, man and woman messed things up, and as a result God cursed his creation, subjecting man to hard toil, woman to pain in child birth and a punitive yearning for husband, and moreover that all creation would be subject to frustration and decay.

In short, God's curse pervades the universe.

Now God is a God of mercy and he never revoked a seventh day of rest, and we see that his own son took periodic respites from his labors.

But, living under a curse is not something many people are inclined to accept lightly. Many people rebel at the way the world is, seek to get out from under God's yoke and create something new; a new life for themselves, and perhaps if ambitious enough, try to remake the whole world.

In vogue among the young people these days is a new phrase that expresses their philosophy of life; that phrase is "It's all good". This phrase captures the spirit of the age. As Alfred E. Newman likes to say, "What, me worry?"

Not a member of this new generation, I will not claim to fully understand the origins of this new philosophy (or more accurately, coping mechanism) but I suspect it has something to do with the fact that this new generation cannot comprehend the origins of all the conflicts raging about them that they encountered as they matured into young adults. And rather then educate themselves about these conflicts they decided it is better to dismiss them, refuse to get involved, and simply declare that the world is "all good".

Now I don't know about the reader's world, but the world that I inhabit is manifestly not "all good", and so this new philosophy of young is a source of consternation to me, and has been much on my mind.

Well, it so happens that I recently began a history of the Korean War, a conflict that is, I think, to most Americans, shrouded in mystery - How did the war begin? Why did it begin?, etc. I was very much surprised to learn in this history that in the beginning stages of this war the American ground forces a took a real shellacking from the enemy. From the very first engagement in early July 1950 until late August the Americans suffered defeat after defeat in the most ignominious manner, often fleeing the enemy virtually naked - leaving behind clothes, boots, provisions, ammunition, weapons, motor vehicles, and their wounded friends. Probably because, once again, this unpreparedness came under the leadership of a Democrat, in this instance President Harry Truman, the media and our schools, who invariably favor Democrats, like to keep the truth about the Korean War suppressed. Nevertheless, American forces were nearly swept into the sea by the enemy and a military historian and veteran officer of the Korean War summed up what made such humiliating, bloody, and almost catastrophic defeats by American ground forces inevitable in Korea - it was the attitude of the young people on the ground:

   The(se) young men...carried Regular Army serial numbers, but they were the new breed of American regular, who, not liking the service, had insisted, with public support, that the army be made as much like civilian life and home as possible. Discipline had galled them, and their congressman had seen to it that it did not become to onerous. They had grown fat.
   They were probably as contented a group of American soldiery as had ever existed. They were like American youth everywhere...They were cool, and confident, and figured the world was no sweat. [1]

At about the same time I was reading this book I happened to pay a visit to local brewpub. where long tables have been installed to facilitate, not only large groups, but that strangers might sit with one another. This practice has it roots in Germany; Munich, Germany to be precise. In olden days in Munich kindling fires to brew beer presented a considerable hazard to the general welfare, particularly during the warm, dry summer months. So in 1553, Albert V decreed a limited period, from 29 September to 23 April, for beer production. But, of course, beer consumption continued uninterrupted. So how to store the needed beer all summer long in Munich? Large breweries dug cellars in the banks of the River Isar to keep their beer cool during storage. To further reduce the cellar temperature during the warm seasons, 19th century brewers covered the river banks with gravel and planted chestnut trees for their dense spreading canopies. Soon after that, serving cool beer in a pleasant shaded setting emerged. Simple tables and benches were set up among the trees, creating the popular "beer garden". Breweries would later add indoor spaces, beer halls and cellars, to accommodate more people and to enable them to serve beer and food year around on premises. Communal tables were common. Beer gardens, halls and cellars became a place of refuge in Munich, taking on quasi-religious significance. A word emerged to describe the experience of the beer garden - gemütlichkeit.

Gemütlichkeit derives from gemütlich, the adjective of Gemüt, which means "heart, mind, temper, feeling". It describes a space or state of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer. Other qualities include coziness, peace of mind, belonging, well being, and social acceptance. The current meaning of the word derives from its use in the Biedermeier period in Germany and we will explore this momentarily.

Now, it is this rare commodity called Gemütlichkeit that my local brewpub is trying to conjure up with it's communal tables and other interior appointments. To a large extent they have succeeded. Gemütlichkeit is akin to what this new young generation of Americans is trying to conjure up with it philosophical worldview that, "It's all good".

So what could be wrong with putting aside all our differences and having a beer with a stranger and declaring that life and the world is all good?

Well, for starters the reader would do well to remember that Adolf Hitler had an intimate association with Munich and beer halls. Most of his early speeches were delivered in beer halls and his first overt act to seize power had it's genesis in a beer hall - the infamous Beer Hall Putsch. In short, beer halls became, in time, hotbeds of sedition and revolution in Germany. And not only under Hitler. The Biedermeier Period, touched upon above, was an era in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848 during which the middle class grew and arts appealed to common sensibilities. It began at the end of the Napoleonic Wars and ended with the onset of the European revolutions in 1848. In short, it was a time of relative peace in Europe after the horrific Napoleonic Wars which had lasted thirteen years. These wars revolutionized European armies and played out on an unprecedented scale, mainly owing to the application of modern mass conscription. In other words, these wars were not fought by professional armies as had been the norm, but instead every able body man was dragged in. After these armies, men were delighted to sit down and enjoy a beer, even beer with a stranger, and pretend, for while at least, that, "It's all good". Of course, it couldn't last. The Biedermeier Period ended with the Revolutions of 1848 that swept all of Europe. These uprising remain the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history. The uprisings were led by shaky ad hoc coalitions of reformers, the middle classes and workers - in other words, the type of persons who frequented beer halls.

So it seems that no amount of Gemütlichkeit, or philosophizing about "it" being "all good" is able to overcome the curse. God express purpose in the curse was to punish mankind so as to bring mankind into a state of dependence upon Him for contentment and salvation. After announcing the curse and expelling Adam and Even from paradise he placed cherubim at the entrance to paradise to prevent any man or woman from gaining access, ever again. We cannot defy God by seeking paradise in another kind of garden, a beer garden. It seems God turned the beer garden concept on its head. These supposed paradises of Gemütlichkeit became, ironically, hotbeds of hatred and sedition. Nazism, Hitler, and the Holocaust were nurtured and hatched in these very German "paradises".

Indeed, the producers of this film seemed to understand it would be Wayne's last, or close to it, because they attempt to sum up his western film career in this work by employing clips from earlier westerns, and by having a character in the film, Gillom Rogers (Ron Howard), declare the credo by which Wayne's character, J.B. Books, is supposed to have lived - namely: "I won't be wronged; I won't be insulted; I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I demand the same treatment from them."

This credo is music to the ears of millions of moviegoers (especially men) who want their film heroes to live life as they wish they could - enduring no injustice, and meting out plenty of their own.

However there are serious problems with J.B. Books credo.

First, it runs contrary to God's counsel - In Proverbs, men are advised thus:

A fool’s wrath is quickly and openly known, but a prudent man ignores an insult.

Also, everyone knows that Jesus counseled men to turn the other cheek.

Of course, not everyone, not even all Christians, accept and/or live by Christ's teaching. So, how us does Book's credo fail apart from Scripture?

Well, it just so happens that Book's fails to live up to his own professed standards all throughout The Shootist. He insults many whom he deems worthy of insult and lays hands on many he deems worthy of a thrashing. So, apparently insulting others and smashing other's jaws is perfectly okay as long as you have concluded that you have right on your side. This ignores the fact that Hitler's Nazi's insulted and beat the Jews completed convinced that they had right on their side.

Also, Book "wronged" Lauren Bacall's character, boarding house owner Bond Rogers, by lying about his true identity (notorious gunman) so he could lodge in her house, and after his identity was known, refusing to leave because he was terminally ill with cancer - his refusal costing Rogers the patronage of all her other lodgers.

Yet this is the kind of drivel the movie-going public laps up. I wonder how many people, especially men, have paid dearly in their lives by trying to live by J.B. Books credo - never allowing themselves to be wronged in any way, while exempting themselves from their own lofty standard. I suppose most people who wrong others, expect to be forgiven when called to task, not punched in the face, not thrown through a window or shot. Indeed, at the end of this movie Books shoots three "enemies", none who have actually harmed him in any way, except in the case of one, who insulted him.

Nevertheless, millions prefer to get wisdom for living from Hollywood script writers, than from the mouth of God.

Barack Obama and the National Hussy

In the winter of 2012 feminist activist and Georgetown University Law Center law student Sandra Fluke managed to garner national attention, and heroine status in the Left, with her call for American taxpayers to supply her free contraceptives. Fluke, an unmarried woman, asserted that she and other law students at Georgetown University Law Center were having so much sex, that the resulting expense for contraceptives was impeding their ability to afford college tuition.

Now the holy Bible refers to times when society will honor what is vile - "The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men" (Psalm 12:8).

It occurs to me that the chasm in America between the god-fearing and the god-hating has reached an unprecedented and dangerous value. One day, the god-fearing are walking along minding their own business, and the next day they discover the god-hating had arrived at such a state of depravity that they treat sexual intercourse as if it were a human health condition equivalent to making sure hand sanitizer is available at the entrance of every grocery store for wiping down shopping carts. For Sandra Fluke, aged 30 at the time of her notoriety, engaging in wanton sex is taken for granted, as if it were the equivalent to taking in a movie, or going on a shopping trip. To Sandra Fluke, sex outside of marriage for pure gratification is so normal, so much a part of the fabric of her everyday life, that she can't conceive of a health insurance provider not covering contraception, any more than she can conceive of being denied coverage for having her appendix removed.

So this is the state of affairs - Sandra Fluke is a hussy by the standards of any sane and moral people, but America appears to no longer be a sane and moral people. In our society today, Sandra Fluke warranted, and received, an encouraging phone call from the President of the United States.

Ann Coulter on Liberals Stinginess in Charitable Giving

Click on link: Scrooge Was A Liberal and Liberals Give 'Til It Hurts (You)

Yesterday's Truth As Tomorrow's Lie

The other night the author was watching the 1984 American science fiction action film The Terminator in which one of the characters seeks refuge in a nightclub in which freestyle dancing is the obvious chief entertainment. The author was in his twenties in 1984, and he remembers well the social pressure to participate in nightclub dancing.

Actually "pressure" describes the expectation mildly - reluctance or refusal to dance spasmodically to loud music in a smoke-filled room, on a overcrowded dance-floor, classified one as a stone loser, likely beyond redemption. Now the author has two teenage daughters, and while dancing still goes on, one has to drive a pretty fair distance to find a nightclub where dancing is a chief feature of the entertainment. Raucous freestyle-dancing is simply not a big part of my teen daughters lives, despite that one of my girls has had years of formal ballet and jazz-dance instruction.

As I watched the nightclub scene in The Terminator, I had some painful memories of being marginalized by female friends and acquaintances during the 1970's and 1980's over my preference to sit at table, or perhaps stay home altogether, rather than make like a wiggling smoked-sardine. Suddenly it occurred to me that just as it was essential and hip to dance at nightclubs in the 70's and 80's, and just as it was essential and hip to frequent coffee shops in the early 2000s, mankind is forever embracing cultural fads as transcendent truth. I recalled the images I had been seeing on a DVD series about the Nazis. Prominent are filmed scenes of mass gatherings of all ages and genders rallying to the Nazi cause. It occurred to me that resisting a call to a Nazi rally must have been just as unpleasant for some Germans as it was for me to resist the call to nightclub dance.

The author's conclusion is thus: that the only thing we can truly know to be true is what God tells us is true, not what the passing passions and fashions of man tell us are "true" and imperative.

People are sheep, and deserve the fate their unthinking conformity begets.

Anyone who has read the The Grapes of Wrath, a novel published in 1939 and written by John Steinbeck, who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962, will remember how the humble goodness of the poor family of sharecroppers, the Joads, is contrasted to the arrogant indifference of wealthy businessmen. Well, in the midst of the new "worst recession since the Great Depression" it seems there is a new elite, indifferent to the suffering of FDR's "forgotten man":

The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data.

Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector. [1]

It was a pleasant place to be and there was no suffering and tears in it. When God kicked man out the Garden, and subsequently altered the world through the Flood, man found himself in very unenviable position.

There is much injustice in the world, and there are basically - at least within the Western World - two ways man man copes with that injustice. One man sees injustice and seeks to remedy it insofar as within his power, but understands that in a fallen world despite man's best efforts, the innocent will be trampled upon and the wicked grow prosperous and secure. The other man sees injustice and his blood boils and he determines to root it out - all of it - at all costs. The more he tramples out injustice the more it seems to pop up elsewhere, and his mounting rage and frustration are eventually directed at God who seems to be asleep. This man eventually abandons all hope in God and turns to faith in numbers; faith in numbers of his fellow citizens whom he hopes collectively will number enough feet to trample out all the injustice in every corner of the globe. Any person not willing to lend his feet to the trampling cause is, to the injustice-crusader, an "obstructionist", a "reactionary", and a person not worthy of justice.

One painfully reality of existence is that many persons live much of their lives feeling unloved. This is true for both men and women, but when the experience of feeling unloved is compounded for a woman by the absence of the physical presence of a man; a man to at least present the outside world with the illusion that a woman is loved, the pain can become almost unbearable. In any given generation there has been, is, and always will be a certain percentage of women who, for a variety of reaons, will fail to attract a man. A woman may be physically unattractive, she may be more carrer-oriented than family-oriented, and so on and so on and so on. Place all of these realities within the context of a culture that places a premium on woman who marry and raise a family and inevitably a percentage of women within that culture are going to be resentful. When God can be pinpointed as the agent most responsible for women feeling pressure to marry and bear children than is also inevitable that God will become the special target of resentful women.

It is truly a tragedy that any culture has so distorted God so as to make any women feel that she is a failure if she fails to attract a husband. It is a worse tragedy when women, alienated from her fellow man because of man's error, compound their womanly mistake by becoming alienated from God.

Life is filled with injustice and the best remedy for any person is found in the person of Jesus Christ -

O LORD, you are my God;
I will exalt you and praise your name,
for in perfect faithfulness
you have done marvelous things,
things planned long ago.

You have made the city a heap of rubble,
the fortified town a ruin,
the foreigners' stronghold a city no more;
it will never be rebuilt.

Therefore strong peoples will honor you;
cities of ruthless nations will revere you.

You have been a refuge for the poor,
a refuge for the needy in his distress,
a shelter from the storm
and a shade from the heat.
For the breath of the ruthless
is like a storm driving against a wall

and like the heat of the desert.
You silence the uproar of foreigners;
as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,
so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare
a feast of rich food for all peoples,
a banquet of aged wine—
the best of meats and the finest of wines.

On this mountain he will destroy
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations;

he will swallow up death forever.
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears
from all faces;
he will remove the disgrace of his people
from all the earth.
The LORD has spoken.

In that day they will say,
"Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the LORD, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation."

The hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain;
but Moab will be trampled under him
as straw is trampled down in the manure.

They will spread out their hands in it,
as a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim.
God will bring down their pride
despite the cleverness of their hands.

He will bring down your high fortified walls
and lay them low;
he will bring them down to the ground,
to the very dust. - Isaiah 25

Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, a leading intellectual of the Progressive Era, and political mentor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt had this to say about hyphenated Americans, :

Any (American) who carries a hyphen about with him carries a dagger that he is ready to plunge into the vitals of this Republic whenever he gets ready. [1]

Imaging themselves as The Little Engine That Could, American liberals believe collective progressive willpower will transform America into the rainbow of multicultural diversity they so ardently hope it is, or will become.

"If I just close my eyes, and hope and hope and hope...."

Well, for you liberals I've got news - hope does not disappoint for Christians (Romans5:5), but for godless liberals there is another reality:

At about the time of ratification of the United States Constitution the population in America was 80 percent white; over 200 years later, in 2006, 80.1 percent of Americans self-identified as "white". [1]

Tell me, Mama, is this an how progressives define "progress"?

And the more, literally, the merrier....The study, published in the Oct. 14 online edition of the Journal of Happiness Studies. The findings contradict previous research that suggested that having more offspring doesn't lead to greater happiness and might even make people less satisfied with their lives. One theory behind the conclusion is that parents don't receive many rewards in return for the hard work of raising children. The new study, however, notes that parents say children are one of the most important things in their lives, if not the most important. The study found that life satisfaction for married people -- women especially -- goes up the more kids they have. Single, separated and co-habiting people, by contrast, report negative experiences. [3]

Citations
[1] Cited in Betty Friedan's, The Feminine Mystique (1963)

[2] Robert Thompson, "Barefoot and Pregnant: The Education of Paul Van Dalsem", The Arkansas Historical Quarterly, Volume LVII (Winter 1998); cited in Wikipedia, "Barefoot and pregnant" (accessed 11/9/09)

[3] "Married With Children Paves Way to Happiness, Satisfaction with life goes up as family size increases, study finds.", Randy Dotinga, MSN Health and Fitness (http://health.msn.com/kids-health/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100248065>1=31036; accessed 11/9/09)

Cultural degeneration? Yes, it seems that Vinton, who served in the Army as a chaplain's assistant before launching his post-college career [2], is living proof that one didn't need to be a godless, drug-dazed, draft-dodger to fare well in the Conservative Decade.

[1] The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Sixties, Jonathan Leaf (audio version)

[2] Bobby Vinton, Wikipedian (accessed 8/0/09)

Lies women live by

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rQiPsQwK30w/Sosn4GRBg5I/AAAAAAAAAFA/Uisr8SSOWdk/s400/anguish+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371430825277621138" />
It has already been shown on this blog that women are less happy today than they were at the onset of the modern feminist movement kicked off by Betty Friedan (see post entitled "Women's Lib - The Payoff", Tuesday, May 26, 2009).

Now, more bad news for women -

Anyone who was around in the 1990's and who has a good memory will recall the feminist's attacks on American society in general, and the medical profession specifically, for allegedly neglecting breast cancer in favor of focus on illnesses more likely to impact men. That decade marked the emergence of so-called 'breast cancer awareness', a program still going strong a decade later.

Setting aside the simple fact the incidence of breast cancer has been steadily declining in the United States ever since data began to be collected, it is ironic that male chauvinism should have been implicated in breast cancer - at least the prevention and treatment of it.

Ironic because perhaps no single factor science is aware of contributing to the incidence of breast cancer is greater than those factors which stem directly, inescapably, from feminism.

New research [1] adds to the pile of growing - actually overwhelming - evidence [2]that abortion is linked to higher incidence of breast cancer. In case the reader has lived her life in a cave, the reader should know that the landmark decision allowing unrestricted access to abortion in America (Roe v. Wade) was entirely orchestrated by the feminist left.

If all this is not enough, it is also apparent - except to most women in American since they aren't told the facts - that 'the Pill' causes breast cancer -

Dr. David Longfellow, head of the Chemical and Physical Carcinogenesis Branch at the National Cancer Institute complained that "It’s been an uphill battle to convince the mainstream that estrogen initiates cancer by damaging DNA." [3]

In fact:

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes combined oral contraceptives and combined menopausal therapy as "carcinogenic to humans." [4]

One of the great tragedies of our age is that women have, en masse, "exchanged the truth of God for a lie...(and) receive()in themselves the due penalty for their (actions)" (Romans 1: 25, 27)

[2] "The vast majority of scientific studies have shown that abortion causes an increase in breast cancer, including 16 out of 17 statistically significant studies." This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004. The 21% calling themselves liberal is in line with findings throughout this decade, but is up from the 1990s.

These annual figures are based on multiple national Gallup surveys conducted each year, in some cases encompassing more than 40,000 interviews. The 2009 data are based on 10 separate surveys conducted from January through May. Thus, the margins of error around each year's figures are quite small, and changes of only two percentage points are statistically significant. [1]

Confirming this data is polling done by the Washington Post and ABC News [2]:
Respondents asked whether they considered their views on most political matters liberal, moderate or conservative -

Date/                            Liberal/              Moderate/        Conservative

7/18/09 -                        20%                 39%                 38%

(Moreover), (c)onservatives outnumber liberals in () every state. [3]

[1] )http://www.gallup.com/poll/120857/conservatives-single-largest-ideological-group.aspx; accessed 8/10/09)

[2] "Conservatives Now Outnumber Liberals Almost Two to One in America, According to Washington Post Poll; Friday, July 24, 2009, by Terence P. The paradox of women's declining relative well-being is found across various datasets, measures of subjective well-being, and is pervasive across demographic groups and industrialized countries. Relative declines in female happiness have eroded a gender gap in happiness in which women in the 1970s typically reported higher subjective well-being than did men. These declines have continued and a new gender gap is emerging -- one with higher subjective well-being for men. [1]

The "paradox" cited by the authors is akin to a cat chasing it's tail. The faster the cat runs, the more the tail eludes the cat. Women could have saved themselves a great deal of tail chasing by reading, and applying to their lives, the Bible.

Here is how Paul said women should conduct their lives for maximum satisfaction:

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. [2]

Of course few modern women in Western culture are likely to take Paul's advice anytime soon. The cat has not yet exhausted itself. These things take time. Keep running ladies!

[1] http://papers.nber.org/papers/w14969 (accessed 5/26/09)

[2] Titus 2:3-5
