Debugging in Dynamics 365 Business Central Production Cloud Environment

Hello Everyone,

In this article, we would discuss Debugging in Dynamics 365 Business Central Production Cloud Environment.

Normal debugging is not allowed in a Dynamics 365 Business Central Production Environment as,

a) Cannot accept halting execution/stopping session on shared NST

b) Performance impact

c) Too powerful endpoint (e.g., deploy)

d) Common limitation for SaaS services

Snapshot debugging allows a delegated admin to record AL code that runs on the server, and once it has run, debug the recorded snapshot in Visual Studio Code.

For a delegated admin to create and download a snapshot file that exists on the server on behalf of an end-user, the delegated admin must be part of the D365 Snapshot Debug permission group.

1 - User Permissions

To enable snapshot debugging it is very important that the symbols on the tenant match the symbols on the server.

There are two template configurations for a snapshot, which are accessed by selecting Add Configuration in Visual Studio Code.

a) AL: Initialize a snapshot debugging session locally

b) AL: Initialize a snapshot debugging session on cloud

2 - Initialize a snapshot debugging

Choose whether to run the session on a cloud service or locally. The configuration file will now contain the following information:

userId: The GUID of the user on whose behalf a snapshot debugging will be started. For on-premises, this can also be the user name in user password authentication scenarios. The user must be able to start, or have a session type opened that is specified in the breakOnNext parameter.

sessionId: A session ID for the user specified above in userId.

snapshotVerbosity: Determines how much execution context to be recorded. If SnapPoint is specified, then only methods that hit a snappoint will be recorded.

When a configuration is defined, a snapshot debugging session can be initialized by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P and then selecting AL:Initialize Snapshot Debugging or by pressing F7.

To record the AL execution, the server will now wait for a connection to happen where the following rules apply:

a) If a sessionId is specified for a userId for a given tenant then it will be that session that will be snapshot debugged.

b) If only a userId is specified for a given tenant then the next session that is specified in the breakOnNext configuration parameter is snapshot debugged.

c) If no userId is specified then the next session on a given tenant that validates the breakOnNext parameter will be snapshot debugged.

Once a snapshot debugging session is initialized the snapshot debugging session counter on the status bar will be updated and look like this:

Clicking on the status bar icon or pressing Shift+F7 will bring up a list of all available snapshots.

The status list will show the state of a snapshot-debugged session.

A snapshot debugging session can be in the below states:

a) Initialized - A request is issued and the server is waiting for the next session to be snapshot debugged based on the above rules.

b) Started - You have attached to an end-user session to snapshot debug.

c) Finished - When the snapshot debugging session has finished.

d) Downloaded - When the snapshot file is downloaded.

You can finish a snapshot debugging session by pressing Alt+F7. This brings up all snapshot sessions that have been started. Choosing one will close the session debugging on the server and download the snapshot file.

The snapshot is downloaded as a ZIP file to the .snapshots folder in your VS Code project. And the debug icon on the status bar will be orange now.

Downloaded snapshot session can be debugged offline also using Shift + F7 or click debug status icon.

17 - Select the snapshot and start the Snapshot Debugging

It is based on call stack sequence, not real time execution.

Triggers may not be stepped to in the right order in "playback".

Breakpoints can be added and removed and they will be hit if given a breakpoint; the breakpoint is in the execution context of a recorded state. This means that if walking the execution stack for a breakpoint and the next stepped line is reached, then the code will break on the breakpoint.

You can investigate code and set snappoints in symbol AL (.dal) files

Snapshot Timeout

a) Initialized session closed if not started within 30 minutes.

b) If on a frame data to be serialized grows over 100 MB, it will not be collected.

c) Captured snspahsots are removed from BC server after 8 hours (periodic scheduler)

You can download Business Central 17.0 Indian version preview image from Docker Container. Indian version will be available from October Release 2020 as preview, since the October 2020 release itself is in Preview state. We cannot directly create the Sandbox environment from Business Central Admin Center for IN version but the IN version preview image is available to download from docker.

Socket Programming in Navision and Business Central On-Premises

In this article, we would discuss about Socket Programming.

Socket programming is a way of connecting two nodes on a network to communicate with each other.

A Socket is an End-Point of To and From (Bidirectional) communication link between two programs (Server Program and Client Program ) running on the same network.

A Server Socket Program running on a computer has a socket that bound to a Port Number on the same computer and listening to the client's incoming requests.

A Client Socket Program have to know the IP Address (Hostname) of the computer that the C# Server Socket Program resides and the Port Number assign for listening for client's request .

Communication protocol used for Socket Programming is TCP/IP ( Transmission Control Protocol/Internet protocol).

Migrate Data from Business Central On Premises to Business Central On Cloud with Extensions

In this article, we would discuss about migrating data from Business Central On Premises to Business Central On Cloud using Intelligent Cloud with Extensions.

Important Notes:

1) Before setting up the connection to the intelligent cloud, ensure that at least one user in the system that has SUPER permissions. This is the only user that will be allowed to make changes in the Business Central tenant.

2) The amount of data that can be replicated for any tenant is limited to 150 GB. If your database is larger than 150 GB, try reducing the number of companies you are replicating data for. (Current Limitation)

In this article, we would discuss about Data Upgrade from NAV 2013 to NAV 2018 CU5 (Build 21836).

Task 1: Prepare the old database

1) Use the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Development Environment to build all application objects

2) Unlock all application objects

Filter - Locked True in object designer.

Select all Locked Objects and From File Select Force Unlock.

3) Synchronize the database schema by compiling all Objects

Task 2: Create a full SQL backup of the NAV 2013 database on SQL Server

Task 3: Uninstall all V1 extensions

As it is an NAV 2013 database there are no Extensions so skip this step.

Task 4: Upload the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2018 license to the NAV 2013 database

- In the NAV 2013 development environment, on the File menu, point to Database, and then choose Alter.

- In the Alter Database window, choose Integration, and then select Save license in database.

- Restart Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Server instance

Task 5: Delete all objects except tables from the NAV 2013 database

- Select All Objects in Object Designer and Mark All Objects.
- Select Tables in Object Designer, Select All and UN-mark all tables.
- From View Select Marked only and select all in Object Designer.
- Delete all Objects (marked Objects).

Task 6: Uninstall (optional) the old product (NAV 2013) and install the new product (NAV 2018 CU 5)

- Along with Installation of NAV 2018 CU 5, create a service for NAV 2018 CU 2
- Increase the SQL Command Time Out from 00:30:00 to 20:00:00 for both Services (One Service for NAV 2018 CU 2 and one Service for NAV 2018 CU 5)

Task 7: Clear Dynamics NAV Server instance and debugger breakpoints records from NAV 2013 database

1) Stop NAV 2013 Service

2) Using SQL Server Management Studio, open and clear the dbo.Server Instance and dbo.Debugger Breakpoint tables of the NAV 2013 database

DELETE FROM [NAV2018_TEST].[dbo].[Server Instance]

DELETE from [NAV2018_TEST].[dbo].[Debugger Breakpoint]

- Follow the conversion instructions
- Important: Do not run schema synchronization at this time.

Task 9: Import the upgraded application objects (NAV 2018 CU 2) and upgrade toolkit objects into the converted database

- Import Merged objects from NAV 2018 CU 2 Object Merge in the database. (Select Replace all)
- Do not run table synchronization (Select Later if asked)
- Import Upgrade Toolkit Objects (Upgrade7001100.fob) in Database
- Do not run table synchronization (Select Later if asked)

Task 10: Connect a Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2018 CU 2 Server instance to the converted database

- Connect to NAV 2018 CU 2 service that we created in Task 6

Task 11: Compile all objects that are not already compiled

- Filter Objects with compiled false.
- Compile objects with Synchronization Schema Later.

If you get errors on the following table objects, use the Object Designer to delete the objects because they are no longer used.

Task 19: Delete the upgrade objects

- At this point, we have upgraded the database to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2018 CU 5.

- Now, you can delete the upgrade codeunits and upgrade table objects that you imported in task 9. This task is recommended but not required.

- Filter Objects with Version Tag - UPGTK11.00.00 and delete objects with Force

NAV Object Permissions Limit

Hello Everyone,

I was developing a Dimension update solution for one of our client and found one interesting thing about NAV Objects Permissions limit.

Yes, NAV Objects Permissions do have a defining limit. We can define maximum 80 Tables permissions in Object Permissions.

Kindly refer below snapshot for reference.

If any Developer tries to Define more than 80 Tables in Object Permissions, Developer would get warning "You have reached the allowed number of permissions".

NAV considers first 80 Tables defined Object Permissions and would delete rest if are defined more when OK button is pressed.

NAV 2017 - View Standard and Extension Objects Code in RTC

Hello Everyone,

We can view NAV Standard Objects Code and Extension code in RTC and below is the detailed information for same.

Prerequisites

Point 1: View Standard Objects Code in RTC

CAL Language is used in Dynamics NAV Objects. CAL is converted into C# at Compile Time. The converted C# code is then handled by DotNet Framework when object is ran and the appropriate result is displayed.

NAV save this code in table 2000000071 Object Metadata.

2 Blob Fields:

- User AL Code contains the C/Al code of the object.

- User Code contains the C# code of the same object which is generated when the object is compiled.

This would also allow us to see code of objects which are not in our License range.

I created a simple Page “RTC Standard Objects Code” in NAV 2017 to see this code in RTC. Please see below snapshots for details.

- Select Code Type (CAL, DotNet)

Once an extension is installed for a tenant you cannot see the objects in Developer environment. NAV stores these objects in table 2000000150 (Nav App Object Metadata).

After converting your database to NAV 2018, when we try to connect NAV 2018 service it gets stopped automatically due to below reasons,

Control Id 207 is used in Page 30 once still while starting service it throws Error.

Solution - Change Control Id from 207 to 1207 for field "Net Invoiced Qty."

Point 2 - Page - 31 - Item List - Action - "Show/Hide Power BI Reports" - Id - 141

Error - Action - Id 141

Action Id 141 is used in Page 31 once still while starting service it throws Error.

Solution - Change Action Id from 141 to 1141 for Action "Show/Hide Power BI Reports"

Point 3 - Page - 50 - Purchase Order - Field - "Ship-to" - Control Id - 84

Error - Control Id 84

Control Id 84 is used in Page 50 once still while starting service it throws Error.

Solution - Change Control Id from 84 to 284 for field "Ship-to"

New DataType FILTERPAGEBUILDER - Navision 2016

Hello Everyone,

There is a new datatype introduced in NAV 2016 and it is called FilterPageBuilder, this datatype can be used to create a filter page that enables users to set filters on multiple tables. The page can have multiple controls i.e. multiple records and you can use that to capture filters on the records.

Following is an example how it can be used

Sample Code:

Variable - FilterPageBuilder ---- SubType of FILTERPAGEBUILDER

FilterPageBuilder.ADDTABLE(‘Customer Table’,DATABASE::Customer);

FilterPageBuilder.ADDTABLE(‘Item Table’,DATABASE::Item);

FilterPageBuilder.RUNMODAL;

The above code will open the following page

You can also specify the field like we do using ReqFilterFields property on the request page of the report using ADDFIELD function below is another example
Customer is the record variable of Customer Table

FilterPageBuilder.ADDRECORD('Customer Table',Customer);

FilterPageBuilder.ADDFIELD('Customer Table',Customer."No.");

FilterPageBuilder.RUNMODAL;

As you can see the first parameter should match with ADDRECORD to let the control know which field to show.

Once the user sets the filter on the page, we can get the filters from the page using GETVIEW function of the FilterPageBuilder and then set that to another record.

Example:

Customer2.SETVIEW(FilterPageBuilder.GETVIEW(Customer));

Where Customer2 is another customer record variable.

And its done.

Defining Automation Variables - Problem - Navision 2009 R2

Hello Everyone,

I was working with one of our clients for requirement that uses Automation Variable in Navision 2009 R2.

I had observed a very strange behavior while defining an Automation Variable.

I got the error shown in below snapshot while I was defining Automation Variable.

I found the solution for this very strange thing.

Solution Details
1 - For using Automation variable, we must upload developer license in database. Then we can define the Automation variable datatype and use that.

2 - Even if we change the license to developer license then also it won’t work. We must upload the developer license.

Note – Navision would not give any compilation error if we define Automation variable using developer license and then upload back client license again and compile objects.

Dll register and Unregister - Automation Variables - Navision 2009 R2

Hello Everyone,

I was working on one of the requirement form client regarding FTP in Navision 2009 R2 using Automation variables.

General Approach – To register a dll - Using cmd

1 – Run cmd as administrator

2 – Go to main C: by using command – cd\

3 – Go to Folder FTPFileManagementWithSSL where your dll is located using command - cd FTPFileManagementWithSSL

4 – Execute Command - tlbexp FTPFileManagementWithSSL.dll /out: FTPFileManagementWithSSL.tlb

5 – Execute Command - "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\regasm" /tlb: FTPFileManagementWithSSL.tlb FTPFileManagementWithSSL.dll

6 – Execute Command - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin\gacutil" /i FTPFileManagementWithSSL.dll

Dll Registered successfully – Only in those cases where Microsoft SDKs are installed.

But even using above approach I was getting error – “Automation Control was not registered Successfully” when I used Automation variable in code.

Pad Char - In RDLC Report

Hello Everyone,

I was upgrading report from Nav 2009 R2 to Nav 2016. I found an interesting feature that I did in RDLC in correspondence to section property.

For one of the text box in Nav 2009 R2 I saw that a Pad Char property set to * as shown in snapshot 1. There is no such property in RDLC.

So I found a way to do this.

Navision 2015 and Above - Maximum Length of Text Variable - Filter String

Hello Every One,

I would like to tell an interesting feature in Navision regarding Text variable used as filter string.

What is the maximum length of a Text Variable used as filter string?

Maximum length of a Text Variable used as filter String is 41,94,304 Characters = 64KB.

I came to know this when I created a Code-unit and got compilation error when my filter string exceeds its limit.

I have got the error as shown in below snapshot when size of my variable Filter exceeded its length.

1) Compilation Error - Give Static Value in variable exceeding its limit.

2) Run Time Error - A variable is assigned values based on certain logic and its limits exceed.

So if we are using a Text variable without specifying its length we can filter out almost maximum number of records.

If we want to refresh a page after some action here is one of the simplest way to do it.

First of all create a function called RefreshPage as shown in below snapshot..
