AsyncImage is a built-in SwiftUI view introduced in iOS 15+ to asynchronously load and display images from a URL.

It provides a simple way to load images without writing URLSession code to download data in background and set it to ImageView on Main thread.

PickerView In SwiftUI

As we know to PickerView is similar to a Dropdown in iOS. You can select from a set of provided items within a PickerView.
So let's get started and add a simple PickerView where user can select a Number from 1 to 10.

Explanation:
Picker takes two parameters here, selection and label.
selection means the item which you want to be selected by default (number 5 here).
label means the Title of Picker (Select Numbers here).
Inside PickerView I have passed TextView's with each having number indexing 1 to 10.
Hence this PickerView will display numbers 1 to 10.

Alert & Action Sheet in SwiftUI

Alerts & Action Sheets do work in similar fashion as they do previously in Swift or Objective C.

In previous posts we have worked on TableView (List), now you would be curious to know about the CollectionView or Grid in SwiftUI.

So there is no such thing as CollectionView in SwiftUI. Oh.. noooo...

Lets discuss how to get a Grid in SwiftUI.

Explanation of Code:

For this we have to take two ForEach Loops, one for drawing Rows and the other one for columns.

Steps:

1. Take a List.

2. Inside the List add a first ForEach Loop for drawing the Rows.

3. Now to add Columns in Horizontal manner add a HStack.

4. Inside this HStack add the second ForEach loop for drawing the Columns.

5. To place Text above Color I added a ZStack.

6. Inside this ZStack add the Color (and set its properties) and add the Text (to display the Row and Column number).

That's it guys we have our Grid ready. Hit the Cmd + Opt + p combination to see the preview.

Button in SwiftUI

Lets learn how to work with a Button in SwiftUI.

Let me explain the code snippet:
1. Two private variables, one is buttonClicked which is a Bool that will toggle on button click action and the other is textOnLabel is a String with a default as BLACK.
2. In body I have a VStack with spacing 50, it will add a spacing of 50 between UIControls added inside the stack.
3. Inside this VStack; I wanted to have a Text (to display the Background Color of Button) and a Button.
4. Inside Button's action closure I toggled the bool value of var buttonClicked and made a call to method buttonAction().
5. Inside this buttonAction method I just changed the text of textOnLabel based on the buttonClicked bool value.
6. To make Button UI better I added padding, background color, foreground color and cornerradius to it.

Stack in SwiftUI

In previous post we have used Stack but i have not explained it there.
SwiftUI allows us to add nested Stacks too means you can have a HStack inside a VStack or vice-versa or any other combinations.

SwiftUI has categorized Stack into 3 types:
1. HStack - Horizontal Stack
2. VStack - Vertical Stack
3. ZStack - Z Index Stack

1. HStack - If you want to place UI horizontally use this type.

Explanation - Here i have created a HStack and added two Color's namely red and blue.
Now you would like to ask me how you can add a Color instead of a View!!!
So in SwiftUI we can treat Color also as a View, let me elaborate it.
It will draw a View within a provided space by the HStack and fill it with the provided Color and returns it as a View.

2. VStack - This will add a Vertical Stack to your View.

Table with Dynamic Cell in SwiftUI

In previous Post I demonstrated the ways we can have a Table in SwiftUI.
Now lets get started to a simple demo where we can load dynamic info in table cell.

I am creating a snippet where I want to load Roll Number and Name of students of a class in Table.
For this I used List which will create rows equal to rollNosArray count (i.e. 4 for now).

1. Lets have two arrays, first for names and the other for roll numbers.
2. Iterate List through the rollNosArray, so we will have 4 rows/cells.
3. Now create a new Struct named DynamicCell. This is our custom dynamic cell.
4. As per my need I wanted Two Labels to display info inside a row horizontally.
5. So I took a HStack and inside it added two Text.
6. For a clear separation between two Text's I added a Divider.
7. Back to our ContentView Struct, inside List call this DynamicCell and pass the value to the two variables declared in DynamicCell Struct (name and rollNumber).
8. Execute the code and we have our expected Table with dynamic rows.

In many apps we require list of items in a scrollable format, for this we used UITableView as of now.

In SwiftUI we have many ways to create a Table. I will try to cover a few ways here.

1. ForEach Loop with List:

Binding & State of Variables in SwiftUI

All apps take some user inputs, display output by reflecting the correct changes and modifications. Suppose I have a login screen, until the user has entered the Username and Password I wont enable the Login button. Once the users satisfies this scenario I should reflect the change by enabling the Login Button.

So as to make this possible in SwiftUI we have to use @State attribute while declaration of a variable. So now SwiftUI will itself keep watch on any changes occurring with this variable and update the UI where it has been used.
Now you would ask why I have used that $ sign with these variables while using them with TextFields. It is because SwiftUI tries to refer to the actual data rather than the properties current value. Here $ is for Two Way Binding. It is required to show the data of the property here and write it back to the property.
In above code snippet I have two TextFields and two Texts (you can say Labels), now as user tries to enter name and age character by character the name and age will be reflected instantly to the Texts.
Give it a shot and you would find this very helpful.

SwiftUI - Form

Many a times we need to design a User Interface where we need to take users inputs in TextFields, Date Pickers, Pickers, Toggles. As of now what we followed is we either used a ScrollView for a fixed set of inputs or TableView for list of inputs. SwiftUI provides us with a simple solution called Form for this.
Form is a container or a collection of user input controls. Forms can contain Sections which can group input controls. Also keep that in mind that forms are scrollable, we don't need to worry about what will happen if we add multiple items and it gets out of the screen.

Lets see following example:

I know this is not a complete list; I am too exploring it.

ContentView.swift is the file where we are going to code. By default we get a Text as Hello, World!

Let's see what this file actually means and what it does.

So here we have two structures:

ContentView struct - This is the place to code or design.
ContentView_Previews struct - From here your canvas renders your code.

1. ContentView struct - Here we are returning a Text as some view. some view means any view here, we can return a Text, TextField, NavigationView, List, etc.

Now you will ask what I wish to add multiple Text?

For this you need to club it using either List, Group, VStack, Hstack, etc.

2. ContentView_Previews struct - Here too we are returning some view, but now we are returning the complete ContentView() as some view.

Intro to SwiftUI

As we all know SwiftUI is here and it has completely changed development of apps, not only the UI but the way we code.

Basic Requirement For Development and Deployment:

Xcode 11 or above
iOS 13 or above

Here I have created a new project selecting SwiftUI as User Interface.

As we can see now the Left Pane consists of some new files like:

1. SceneDelegate.swift

2. ContentView.swift

On exploring AppDelegate.swift you will notice it has some methods we are not been aware of in the past like

Heading towards the SceneDelegate.swift, this file is the place where we are connecting our scenes to the main window.

ContentView.swift has our scene for now, so the project has automatically linked it to window as shown in the screenshot.

Open the ContentView.swift file here you can see two "struct"s. To launch Automatic Preview Window click on right hand side Adjust Editor Options button, you can see a dropdown popover, out of this choose Canvas. Canvas will be launched and you may get to see "Automatic preview updating paused" with a button to Resume. Click this resume button and there we go.

Automatic Preview Window is the place where we can get instant reflection of our

code.

By default there is a Label known as Text in SwiftUI with text "Hello, World!" and you can see it in Automatic Preview Window without running your simulator.

Try changing the text to something else like "This is my SwiftUI Intro App" and the Xcode does the magic to reflects the textual change to the Canvas.

Communication between iPhone & Watch OS2

In this tutorial we will cover communication between iPhone and Watch using WatchConnectivity framework (available for Watch OS2 & onwards)

1. Create a Single View Application (you can use other application type too).

2. Click File -> New Target -> WatchKit App (Do not choose WatchKit App for watchOS 1 as it does not support WatchConnectivity framework).

3. So we do have two Targets viz. App and App Watch Extension.

4. Import the WatchConnectivity framework to both the targets.

5. In our App's ViewController.h file

add protocol <WCSessionDelegate>

6. Now in our App's ViewController.h file's viewDidLoad method:
check if WCSession is supported by our iOS, if yes then do initailize WCSession, set its delegate and activate the session as shown:

7. In order to send data to Watch we need to use updateApplicationContext method of WCSession.

1. Create a new iOS Objective C app in XCode.

2. Open Main.storyboard in you app.

Test Environment:

Recently, payUmoney has done some modifications in test environment due to which test key-JBZaLc and salt-GQs7yium will not work anymore.

In order to test the gateway using a test key and salt, kindly follow these steps:

2 - Sign up as a merchant - use any of your valid email ids - kindly do not use a random email id.

8. payUmoney requires some mandatory fields to make a web-call:

txnid, key, amount, productinfo, firstname, email, phone, surl, furl, hash, service_provider.

9. We have to create a Transaction ID which must be unique SHA512 encrypted value.

10. Take all values from user except txnid, key, surl, furl, hash & service_provider.

11. Create a NSString by appending all the values in sequence as below:

Declaration of iVar:

Let's start with declaring iVars in Swift

In Swift we can declare an iVar using keyword:
1. let - it declares an immutable iVar
2. var - it declares a mutable iVar

let myLetObject = "My immutable iVar"
So now i cannot change the value of myLetObject after it is once assigned.

var myVarObject = "My mutable iVar"
myVarObject = "Changed the value of iVar"
I can change its value at any instance.

Youtube Video Player

To play Youtube video within the app we have 2 ways:

1. Open Youtube App (if installed) or launch Safari to play video:

In this case we don't have a choice to bring back the user to our app.

So we better use the 2nd way.

2. Embed Youtube iOS Player Helper:
I have used youtube-ios-player-helper Version - 0.1.3

Select YTPlayerView.h, YTPlayerView.m, and the Assets folder from my Github repository CODE.
Drag these files and folders into your project. Make sure the Copy items into destination group’s folder option is checked. When dragging the Assets folder, make sure that the Create Folder References for any added folders option is checked.
Drag a UIView the desired size of your player onto your Storyboard.
Change the UIView's class in the Identity Inspector tab to YTPlayerView
Import "YTPlayerView.h" in your ViewController.
Add the following property to your ViewController's header file:

Check Internet Connectivity Using AFNetworking 2.0

I have created NetworkRechabilityMonitor class to get the Internet Connection status in my app using AFNetworking 2.0 library.

1. Create an NSObject class naming NetworkRechabilityMonitor, add below code in respective Header & Implementation files.

iOS 6 Grouped Style UITableView in iOS 8 App

I came across a requirement where i have to show iOS 6 grouped style UITableView in iOS8 App.
So i did some workaround and it really works.

Steps:

I added a UITableView on UIViewController (Scene) in UIStoryboard.
I reduced the width of the UITableView and centre aligned it (eg. UIViewController width - 320px so i take 300px UITableView).
Add & Import QuartzCore framework.
In cellForRowAtIndexPath method make the cell layer corner round as per requirement and set masktobounds as shown below.

Text to Speech in iOS7

iOS7 makes Text to Speech really easy and that also in multiple languages.
iOS7 has added two new classes for Text to Speech functionality:
1. AVSpeechSynthesizer
2. AVSpeechUtterance

First Link AVFoundation and AudioToolbox Framework from Application Target -> Build Phases -> Link Binary With Libraries.

Import both frameworks in Header file (.h file)

Display HTML in NSAttributedString in iOS7

iOS7 has really added some best things like displaying HTML in NSAttributedString.
Suppose in a case you want to display some HTML in your UITextView from any website.
Just pass the HTML to NSAttributedString and set this attributed string to the UITextView and that's it, you are done.

In below snippet i have passed the html string from my blog site to NSAttributedString and this NSAttributedString is set to UITextView.
Now the html from my blog site will be displayed in the UITextView along with clickable links.

Calculating Height of UITextView in iOS7

Many times in application we need to calculate height of UITextView to make it grow and shrink according to the text contained within it.

Now many of you will say calculating height of UITextView is not a big deal.

Yes its true for iOS6 and below version. But not true from iOS7 and higher.

In iOS6 we can get height of a UITextView simply using the contentSize.

eg.

[myTextView setText:@"here goes my text"];

CGFloat heightOfTextView = myTextView.contentSize.height;

In iOS7 may be it's a bug or due to deprecation, contentSize does not provide you the accurate height of the UITextView.

So below is the code snippet i used in my application for getting the height of UITextView:

Just set text NSString to UITextView and call this method sending UITextView as parameter

Hyperlinks in iOS App by detecting Links, Phone Number, Address and CalendarEvent in UITextView

In many scenarios we have to detect Links(URLs) and Phone Numbers from given NSString and make it similar to hyperlink in HTML.
Suppose you have a string with multiple url's and you want to make it clickable, so as to be able to open it in Safari browser.

In below code i have taken a string which consists of two url's and i want to make it clickable.
So i take a UITextView "txtViewClickableHyperLink" and assigned the NSString "strText" to it.
Now i have used a magic line to setDataDetector of UITextView, this line has power to recognise my url.
By changing type of DataDetector we can recognise:
UIDataDetectorTypeLink - URL (Link)
UIDataDetectorTypePhoneNumber - Phone Number
UIDataDetectorTypeAddress - Address
UIDataDetectorTypeCalendarEvent - Calendar Event
UIDataDetectorTypeAll - Detects all types

Placeholder text in UITextView iOS

As we all know UITextView does not have a Placeholder unlike a UITextField.
So it is really a painful job to have a placeholder text in a UITextView.
I got stuck on the same issue and did some work around.
This trick will make you think that you are actually having a placeholder text inside a UITextView.

So here we go:
1. Place a UILabel on nib (xib) file at the position where you want UITextView.
2. Now set text what you want on the placeholder and change it text color to lightGraycolor.
3. Take a UITextView and place it above the UILabel and set its background color to clearcolor.
4. It will appear as a placeholder inside UITextView.
5. Set delegates of UITextView as follows:

In Header file:

Unique Identifier UUID - iOS

UDID is a hash value composed from various hardware identifiers such as the device serial number.
It is unique for each device.
The UDID is independent of the device name, SIM card.
It is really easy to get it from the device programmatically:

NSString *uuid = [[UIDevice currentDevice] uniqueIdentifier];

But UDID is no longer available onwards iOS 6 due to security / privacy reasons.
UDID is deprecated by Apple; developers can not make use of it in any iOS application.

So what now? How can we identify the device?

I found many solutions on searching over internet like identifierForVendor or advertisingIdentifier or generate our own UUID (store & persist it on your own).

Many examples show how to generate UUID and store it in NSUserDefault:

But if you store the UUID in NSUserDefaults you would loose it as soon as the app gets uninstalled from the device.

So the better idea is to store it in Keychain. In case the app is uninstalled Keychain will preserve the UUID and on next installation we can fetch it from there.
