I love homemade ice cream but never have the time to make any. My roommate is a whiz and bought this book and I've reaped the benefits! I got online just to find the recipes and thank Karen Pettine for her delicious contributions to the dessert world. It's an inexpensive book with lots of return on investment!
Plenty ice cream recipes for us to try. I like trying different recipes, especially desserts. Free is an excellent price!
The Sea Salted Caramel Frozen Yogurt was an immediate hit with my family!

I found the recipes in this book to be genius in there simplicity and yet delicious to taste. With this summer looking to be one of the hottest I have lived through I am glad I got this book.

Recipes That got my attention include
Mint chocolate chip ice cream
banana frozen yogurt
Stracciatella gelato
tiramisu gelato
and last but not least blueberry sorbet.

The blueberry sorbet tasted great and has me wanting to make more. I highly recommend this for anyone with a ice cream maker and who knows how rewarding it can be to make your own food.

Homemade ice cream has a special place in our family. One memorable summer all the teens in my family spent the entire summer with me out in the High Desert country of Arizona. Six teenagers, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 litters of kittens, 14 puppies that magically appeared . . what fun we had! At first things were a bit tough. I came in from work every night to find beds unmade, dishes undone, nothing in the works for dinner and six teens sprawled in front of Dances With Wolves (the only video we happened to have) or a video game. It was a bit like pulling teeth, but with the help of a chore list, a white board and a stern insistence that everyone take a turn at everything (even the stuff they didn't like), the kids got it together (it took them till 1 am , but the kids figured it out for themselves while Grandpa and I sipped iced tea under the stars) and earned a daily reward - Homemade Ice Cream. After everything was done for the day, Grandpa would drive whoever it was who had a turn at the ice cream maker that day down to the store for supplies and heaven would ensue. (Even nearly 20 years ago a half gallon of ice cream was over $7 at the one store in town - and wouldn't have lasted that crew 5 minutes!) They still talk about that wonderful ice cream to this day and even turn their hand at making a bit now and then themselves.

It's looking to be a real scorcher of a summer and Karen Pettine's Summer's Favorite Dessert Cookbook 30 Best Homemade Ice Cream Recipes of All Time is right on time for the Fourth of July! With 30 recipes for various, often enticing, flavors of classic ice creams, frozen yogurts, gelatos, sorbets, and sherbets you'll find something here for every taste or pocketbook and may not even need to make a trip to the store.

The book is nicely laid out and features an interactive table of contents. Recipes are easy to follow and the directions are clear.

I do have just one quibble. Back when my houseful of teens was making a batch of ice cream every afternoon ice cream makers came in just one size - one gallon (four quarts), though you can get away with making only 3 quarts. These days there are a couple of different kinds of ice cream makers - the "old fashioned" model that I still keep around where you need to add ice and salt to produce about a gallon of ice cream and a "modern" version where you freeze a container overnight, then make a much smaller amount of ice cream, usually in the 1 to 1.5 quarts range. Summer's Favorite Dessert Cookbook 30 Best Homemade Ice Cream Recipes of All Time contains recipes for both, but Karen did not think to specify the volume that each recipe produces. Here's a general guide, but you should double check the particular recipe you want to use by adding up the cups of ingredients and then dividing by 4 to get the number of quarts.

Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Butterscotch Ice Creams are sized for a 1 gallon ice cream maker.

Peach and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream will make about 1/2 gallon of ice cream.

Frozen yogurts are mostly sized for a 1.5 quart counter-top model, but a couple of these recipes will make about a half gallon of ice cream.

The Gelatos (the plural is really gelati but it looks weird) are all just the right size for a 1.5 quart ice cream maker.

Apricot, Watermelon & Raspberry Sorbets are sized for a 1 gallon ice cream maker.

Key Lime, Lavender Lemon and Blueberry Sorbets and all of the Sherbets are about the right size for a 1.5 quart counter-top model.

In a letter to the reader at the beginning of Folly du Jour, the seventh installment of the Joe Sandilands series, Barbara Cleverly confesses that is she could travel in time she would choose to go to Paris during the 1920s (in case she couldn't get back, she'd wouldn't mind being stuck there).

To that end, there is a bit of wish-fulfillment in this installment and I don't think I'd recommend it as an introduction to the series. But I would recommend reading it.

Folly du Jour serves as a wonderful, glossy tour of Post World War I France. In its pages we witness Charles Lindbergh's landing in Paris, hear tantalizing comments about Josephine Baker's banana dance (and get to see one of her performances!), hear all about how Louis Armstrong is playing at a jazz club and even get treated to a possible resurgence of the French apache street gangs (pronounced apachu).

Fortunately, Cleverly is a skilled enough that none of these events seem too forced and all eventually become credibly relevant to the mystery at hand, with the exception of Lindbergh's landing (but who can blame a historical fiction writer of any genre for including that event? After all, it's Lindbergh's landing in Paris! And when in Paris...).

Cleverly's plot includes a femme fatale, a mastermind that surprised even me, a veteran armchair sleuth, and a fantastic, satisfying ending confrontation. Sandilands is joined by his friend and French counterpart, a character I wouldn't mind seeing more of in the future.

The gentleman diplomat who is wrongly accused of murder, Sir George Jardine, is equally affable company.

Where most authors would run a risk of doing too much with too many people, Cleverly manages to create a smooth, but engrossing, read. But be warned -- it is somehow lighter, more "fun" than some of the earlier books in this series, although the murder and cause are brutal. One glimpses some parts of the seedy Paris underground, but doesn't get to be in it. Everything feels like it has been polished to a bright shine and airbrushed with the author's own nostalgia.

And, oddly, Cleverly seems positively obsessed with the word "louche." Don't get me wrong, that is a great word that Cleverly has perfect opportunity to use. But it seemed to crop up at least once every few chapters. It's was such a surprising, rookie mistake it was a tad distracting.

Again, however, the story doesn't suffer for this. That being said, I would like to see more on the character development, long-term plot arc front. There was an awkward coffee with a certain lady in the last book...

But then, I suppose that's why we read mystery series, isn't it?

Barbara Cleverly gives us another wonderful read with Joe Sandilands. Her delightful character Joe Sandilands is now in France. He is called to the aid his old friend from India and the plot unfolds. Her historical setting is so believable that the reader is transported back to the days of Apollinaire in France. Once you read one you will need to read them all. I hope she is busy writing as I need another Joe Sandilands fix.
I have enjoyed this whole series. Good writing, good period research, and great stories. I had to buy this one, even before it went to paperback, because I have enjoyed the series so much.
I've mostly enjoyed the five or so Sandilands I've read so far, but this was overdone, overlong, and a real slog. Have already bought book 8, so may give it a try
The first book in this series was fascinating--set in India with an intriguing mystery.
Although the Paris setting of Folly du Jour was interesting, the plot was less so. It plodded & I had to force myself to finish.
Characters still unusual enough but not enough to make this a highly recommended story.

Please don't start your reading of the Joe Sandilands books with this one -- you will not enjoy it nearly as much as you would if you read Cleverly's earlier novels starring the Scotland Yard commander. At least read "Ragtime in Simla". Otherwise you may not appreciate this book fully. Cleverly writes outstanding thrillers and this is no exception. This one is laid not in India but in Paris during the late 1920s when Josephine Baker and jazz ruled. Into this setting enter Joe, Sir George Jardine and the fascinating Alice Conyers -- all old India hands. And they become involved, one way or another, with a series of bizarre, exotic murders. It ends as do Cleverly's other books -- very cleverly. If you like historic police procedurals set in interesting times, you will thoroughly enjoy "Folly du Jour."
Joe arrives in Paris ready to attend an Interpol conference and deliver a paper, but his plans are immediately changed when his friend Sir George Jardine is accused of murder. Now acting as Commander Sandilands and assisted by the familiar Bonnefoye, Joe must find the murder before Jardine pays the price for a crime he didn't commit. I simply adored this book ! The battle of wits between Gabriel Scott, aka Sunshine, and Sophie Darling, aka chatty girl, was total bliss! Sophie’s radiant and lively personality was in total contrast to Gabriel’s “Ice-Man” character. I enjoyed their interactions, their witty banter, the dynamics between them was so much fun! And frankly, I fell head over heels for these two irresistible characters.

Sophie works as a social media liaison, in charge of creative contents. She has been hired to help promote the biggest rock band in the world, managed by Gabriel. He is dedicated to the band, Jax, Killian, Whip and Rye are more than his long-time friends, they are his family. Gabriel is the picture perfect alpha hero, charismatic, in control and exacting. His kind of woman is quiet, dignified and discreet, definitely not Sophie’s temperament. In fact, they are perfect opposite. Sophie is a natural-born talker and a free spirit. She enjoys provoking and teasing him. He enjoys shocking her. Their relationship is complicated, but they have a natural connection that can’t be denied. I loved their interactions, the flirtation, the teasing and the realistic way their relationship progressed from cautious friendship to much deeper feelings.

Gabriel is convinced he has no capacity for relationships. But he needs Sophie to help him live for the moment. He lets her see his vulnerabilities, his loneliness. She brings him comfort and understanding. Together, they are a match made in heaven!

After reading Idol, the first installment in the VIP series, this book was one of my most anticipated read of the year. And it simply blew my mind! This is testament to Kristen Callihan’s masterful storytelling and characterization. "Managed" was such a great rollercoaster ride of emotions, perfect of sweetness and genuineness! I loved it and I can’t recommend it enough. Although it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. But I definitely recommend reading the whole series!

4,5 stars! I love this series. All characters are to fall in love with! Great story, damaged hero, smooth-tongued and funny heroine. What's not to love? Probably just the wait for the next book!

About the plot It started with a flight from hell. Sophie Darling is flying to London for a job interview with a small amount of information for who she will be working. She is a photographer and works in social media. When she gets upgraded to first class, couldn't believe her luck. Until the moment she has to sit next to incredibly handsome and not so happy with the company suit wearing snob.

Gabriel Scott is a manager of the biggest rock band on the world, Kill John and he hates to fly. When the seat next to him instead of being empty is occupied he is ready to explode. But the long flight gets more and more interesting when annoying woman works as a great entertainment and distraction. Who would have thought that this is just the beginning.

My thoughts When everyone has been waiting for a book about another member of the band, Kristen Callihan gave us a book about their manager. And guess what? It was a hit!

First of all the characters. Separately and together, totally amazing. Sophie is smart, sweet but also so goofy. Her inner monologues and banter with Scottie are highly entertaining and funny to tears. Gabriel Scott is a man of control, a professional, ambitious and keeps everybody at a distance. He also frequently deny himself what he wants. But under that whole crust is loving and devoted man.

Sophie and Gabriel are making very small steps to be together, you will have to be patient. But everything is wonderfully built and developed. They have a lot interactions and slowly burn with sexual tension. The waiting for the final shot will wore you out, but they are so good together, you will not regret it. You get caught in their story from the first pages to the last.

It was also good to be part of the band again and get to know even closer members of Kill John. You can be sure that you will find out what's new with Libby and Killian and the whole gang. They all enrich the story and I can't wait to read more books about them.

My favorite thing is as Gabriel said to Sophie, Darling. She doesn't know whether he uses it as her name or endearment, but you feel it immediately. This is adorable and sensational idea. And of course Sunshine, but that you'll have to read yourself. What I highly recommend.

I was confused when I read Idol (VIP Book 1) since I pretty much detest contemporary "rock band" romances but it just captured my imagination and was well written and had a great multilayered plot.

This book while the first 25% was some of the most entertaining reading I have done in years could not hold that level of excellence for the whole book but was still addicting and had me reading it from morning until late tonight to finish it. Scottie and Sophie were one of the most perfectly matched couples in any type of romance that I have ever read, they played off each others weaknesses and the story was written in such a realistic way that it was not one of the "insta-love" novels that less talented authors use because they can't write a decent slow burn romance.

The development of this story was almost perfect and even with the very minor shortcomings I might have still given it 5 Stars but i have a rule that if any author uses a plot device of "character A causes a fight/argument because he/she does not tell character B some secret" loses a Star off the rating.

Bottom Line The first 25% of this novel had me laughing out loud and several surprises make this great reading and the romance develops almost perfectly, highly recommended 4 Stars

Viper Moon A Novel of the Earth Witches Lee Roland 9780451233769 Books

I bought "Viper Moon" because I found it for a good price and I am slightly obsessed with paranormal and Urban Fantasy books. I don't know what made me read this book as soon as it arrived as I have a horrendously big TBR stack. I am so glad I did read it right away because I was shocked by how much I enjoyed the book, especially its vibrant and unforgettable characters.

This story takes place in Duivel Missouri. There is a portion of town called the Barrows. There is a part of the Barrows that no one seems to consciously notice. In fact, its almost impossible to find on a map. 'This" Barrows if full of seedy mob-like criminals, gangs and people-eating monsters. The Barrows is ruled by an entity called The Darkness. Only the Earth Mother keeps the evil of the Barrows from coming into the rest of Duivel and attacking people.

Cassandra Archer is called by the Earth Mother to rescue children, many of whom are found in the Barrows. Then one day a prominent citizen asks for help finding his son. And a local detective needs her to help find his younger sister. This leads to all kinds of excitement as the reader gets introduced to Cass, Flynn, and the supporting characters. Many of these characters are not black and white but made up of shades of gray. There isn't always a clear good or bad guy. I especially liked a character named Michael who is charming but you never really know what is going on with him. Cass is a wonderful, strong, heroine and she made it impossible to not root for her.

The plot was a little confusing at first until all the characters and backstories gelled together. Then it was non-stop action amid several different intriguing mysteries. The book was well written and kept my interest. I had a problem like I said, at the first part of the book and then again at the very end. The ending is most of the reason why I am rating this book as four stars rather than five.

Yes, several big mysteries are answered satisfactorily. We end the book knowing where Cass's professional and personal future is headed. But there is a big (like huge!) situation left unresolved. Which would be okay except it is apparently being resolved by an entire cast of different characters being introduced in the next book. I am certainly in love with this story enough to pick up the next book but because I loved these characters so much, I am truly disappointed Cass won't be the lead of future stories.

Viper Moon A Novel of the Earth Witches Lee Roland 9780451233769 Books Reviews

For the first in a series this book is pretty good. Usually the first book sets up the world and the magic system (if there is one) and skips the characterization or skimps on it, same with story. Viper Moon however did not do that.

Cassandra is a Earth Witch (okay so it never really says that, she is called Huntress but the series name is Earth Witches so I assume that's what she really is, I could be off base here) Anyways, she has been given powers by The Mother and tracks down children that go into the Barrows, a place that normal people can not see beyond a certain point. It is also a place children defiantly do not belong, there are gangs, monsters and all sorts of nasties just waiting to corrupt and/or kill them.

Cassie is given a certain child to find (two actually) that leads her into the Barrows and into some sticky situations, explosions, crime lords, beautiful angelic-looking guys and a kick-butt cop are a few things she encounters. She also has a very cool little menagerie of pets, 2 snakes and a very disgruntled cat who all seem to be smarter than your average animals.

The characters were good, they all played their roles and fit their personas well. Cassie was strong, vulnerable, witty and proud, I liked her. The others were good as well, even the snakes and cat had personality. What I did not like? Insta-love.. yup, Viper Moon has it. I can't stand it, although it was not a deal breaker, it was certainly not my favorite part, in fact it was my least. But oh well. Viper Moon is a great book non-the-less and I hope to read the second book soon.

Watch the kiddies with this one though, there are moments of F-bombs, and some sex scenes.
Another nice urban fantasy series, suggested by as similar to others I've read. I am looking forward to more by this author.
I like this series. The three books overlap but aren't about the same characters. It gets a bit slow in places, but the overall book is a good one and well worth reading. I recommend reading the books in order. Viper, Vicious, and Vengence.
Pretty good for an urban romance fantasy. Very descriptive with regard to the sketchy and scary side of urban developments.
I like the whole fantasy genre of persons with special abilities doing battle with evil, especially when meshed with mainstream faiths as well. Jim Butcher is the master of this. "Viper Moon" was great in character development, and was just an interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and there were significant plot twists that added much to my enjoyment. Great first effort, and I look forward to more books.
The book starts out a bit draggy but picks nicely. Interesting twists...saving kidnapped kids...being THE HUNTRESS, you know, that kind of thing. The main squeezes are both pretty cool but Cass does choose one over the other. All of the men, crime lords, gang bangers, etc., respect, fear or like Cass in one way or another. Abby, the Mother's life-long agent, heals and sees into the future, makes potions and is always there to help those who need her. The sewers and monsters who live in them, are believable enough to keep the story moving. Cass is a woman who knows how to take care of herself and get the job done. She has wonderful roommates/partners, two very nice snakes and a hissy cat who, like many furry beasties, would rather claw you to shreds than look at you, unless, of course, you have caviar. The snakes play an important roll in the story and it's easy to fall for them. Another fuzzy one joins up in the final pages. I liked the book. I liked the characters and I liked the fact that Cass got rid of the bad guys without wasting time thinking about it. Nice. Looking forward to a long and enjoyable series.
I bought "Viper Moon" because I found it for a good price and I am slightly obsessed with paranormal and Urban Fantasy books. I don't know what made me read this book as soon as it arrived as I have a horrendously big TBR stack. I am so glad I did read it right away because I was shocked by how much I enjoyed the book, especially its vibrant and unforgettable characters.

This story takes place in Duivel Missouri. There is a portion of town called the Barrows. There is a part of the Barrows that no one seems to consciously notice. In fact, its almost impossible to find on a map. 'This" Barrows if full of seedy mob-like criminals, gangs and people-eating monsters. The Barrows is ruled by an entity called The Darkness. Only the Earth Mother keeps the evil of the Barrows from coming into the rest of Duivel and attacking people.

Cassandra Archer is called by the Earth Mother to rescue children, many of whom are found in the Barrows. Then one day a prominent citizen asks for help finding his son. And a local detective needs her to help find his younger sister. This leads to all kinds of excitement as the reader gets introduced to Cass, Flynn, and the supporting characters. Many of these characters are not black and white but made up of shades of gray. There isn't always a clear good or bad guy. I especially liked a character named Michael who is charming but you never really know what is going on with him. Cass is a wonderful, strong, heroine and she made it impossible to not root for her.

The plot was a little confusing at first until all the characters and backstories gelled together. Then it was non-stop action amid several different intriguing mysteries. The book was well written and kept my interest. I had a problem like I said, at the first part of the book and then again at the very end. The ending is most of the reason why I am rating this book as four stars rather than five.

Yes, several big mysteries are answered satisfactorily. We end the book knowing where Cass's professional and personal future is headed. But there is a big (like huge!) situation left unresolved. Which would be okay except it is apparently being resolved by an entire cast of different characters being introduced in the next book. I am certainly in love with this story enough to pick up the next book but because I loved these characters so much, I am truly disappointed Cass won't be the lead of future stories.

This book was so close to 5 Stars for me but their were a couple of things that kept bothering me.
Let's start with what I liked:
Royal: Royals family life was not idealistic but he seemed to push through all the bad because he felt like he had become part of the Rosewood family by meeting Demi's brother. Royal seemed that he knew from an early age that Demi was his girl, it's just that he had to convince Demi. It didn't take long for Demi to come around. Their love was everything that young love is, all consuming, until Royal just left with no word for 7 years.

Demi: Royal had been Demi's first love and it had taken her a long while to move on but she did with Brooks, her fiancé. It was after Brooks was in an accident that she realized she hadn't really moved on very much at all.

I really enjoyed Demi and Royals journey and loved the epilogue but their were two, make that three things that stopped me from a 5 Star rating.

Demi: It got a little old that she was trying to keep up appearances with Brooks, enough already.
Royal: How quickly he forgave Demi's Dad, I felt the man should have done a little more groveling.
Pandora: Ugh, could have done with a little less but...

Would I recommend this book YES! Please read, I think you'll enjoy it, I definitely did.

First book I have read by this author and could not put the book down. I liked both Royal and Demi and their story of love for each other. The contrast in their background, Royal coming from a bad home environment and foster care system and Demi in a loving and stable home, is such an important part of the plot and why things happened the way they did. I love how Royal doesn't give up his hope for restoring their relationship and it shows the influence her family had on him while growing up. One mistake changes their life for seven years and now its all about getting back what they had. I did not guess what horrific thing Royal did that Demi's father banned him from their family and it was a shock. However, there is always 2 sides to a story and he has it. Good book with no cliffhangers and having to buy the next book to find out what happens. Will read more books by this author.
Smiling to myself from the very beginning, I went back and read it out to the wife, read a little more, and then read still more. In the end I read the whole thing to her in the space of two days.

Royal Lockhart is the foster kid that Demi's older brother befriends and brings over to visit who rapidly becomes a regular fixture in the Rosewood home, and a thorn in young Demi's side. Over time their relationship evolved from one of antagonism to young love and then ... he's gone. No word of warning or explanation. Nothing but a hole left behind that he once inhabited in the lives of the Rosewood family and that of Demi in particular.

Seven years later Demi still has nothing but guesses and suppositions that she tries to push from her mind as she moves on with life, a life that is tossed into chaos by the events of one night, and then upended once again when Royal suddenly shows his face once again.

The way Winter draws the readers into the lives of two children who grow into lovers was mesmerizing. Even knowing that much of what was coming from the blurb, the playfulness and whimsy with which those opening scenes are written served to draw the reader into the lives of both major characters and beyond them, the other members of the Rosewood family.

Having established that connection, she then throws in a handful of twists all in one go. From there she taunts and teases the reader as the story unfolds and Demi in particular is caught between a rock and a hard place dealing with a hospitalized fiancee, an overbearing prospective mother-in-law, worried family members and the man she never really stopped loving returning almost as if from the dead.

While I found a fair few of the plot elements that came up in the latter part of the story to be somewhat predictable, I thought that the way the story was written, both in terms of writing style and how the elements of the story were woven together, were just so good that I really didn't care. I loved reading it anyway (and the wife enjoyed having it read to her)

I'll surely be buying more of Winter's books in the future.
I will admit, like other readers, this was frustrating to read. The Demi-character was wishy-washy, fiery one moment and wimpy the next. The I hate you and then I love you type person. Her hoarding all those secrets was dumb. After her family judged her like Royal, she forgave them way too easily. Royal was a good character, more solid and level in his beliefs. He also was a determined person.

The other thing that really bothered me was the author's lack of knowledge regarding law. It was ridiculous that police would believe a young man traveled all that way to do what he was charged for to his own sister when she wasn't even where she was supposed to be living with her foster family, but instead was with a drug user staying in a shack. Also, another person who does not have your power of attorney cannot quit your job for you. That's illegal and stupid and the union would have made sure that job was restored. The story did wrap up nicely, EXCEPT for Demi not getting the last word where that horrible Mrs. Abbot was concerned.

And she wasn't given a rulebook in how to dispense justice with her newfound "gift."

She lives in an area referred to as The Zone, an area affected by an accident from Acme, a chemical plant. The Zone is a place where strange things are now commonplace and only those affected by the chemical flood, or are too poor to move, stick around. Well, there are a few others that stick around but they've got their own reasons for staying.

Tina had just passed the bar and is now officially a lawyer working as an intern for a judge when Acme appears to have another accident and green and pink chemical clouds cover the area putting a number of affected people into a coma. They can't let Acme sweep this one under the rug.

There is plenty going on in this second book that pits the inhabitants of The Zone against the Vanderventer family that owns Acme. Fighting, kidnapping, breaking and entering, sexual tension, humor, plenty of emotions and a great deal of moral contemplation, especially as Tina attempts to work out just what she should and shouldn't do.

The author does a great job with building an interesting world in the Zone, as well as some unique characters. We learn more about Andre in this book and a number of things occur to advance the overall storyline. And for the most part I really like the morality angle which comes to play not just in Tina's personal life, but with what Acme is attempting to do.

But I've got to say that I'm downgrading my review to a 3 star because so much of the story is spent on Tina's personal struggle with what she should or shouldn't do. Is what the person she's judging really being evil or just doing what they're told? Do they deserve to go to Hell or could another punishment be appropriate? And since she gets rewarded--in either a good or bad way--for each one she does, she's got to be really careful on what she wishes for. Now all of this makes sense and is important as she grows and learns from it, but it can be a struggle to read as this occurs a great deal throughout the book. I would expect to see less of this as the series progresses.

Overall I liked the story and thought it was a good sequel to Boyfriend From Hell, leaving me anxious to see what's going to happen next.

Damn Him to Hell was a wonderful continuation of Tina’s story. I thought it was better than book one. This was a hard book to put down!

The opening of the book is great; it captures the reader’s attention in the first line.

Jamie Quaid makes it easy for readers to jump into the series, even if they haven’t read the first book. Even with the history and setting descriptions she injects into the story, it doesn’t lag. She tells you what you need to know and quickly moves on with the story.

A few times, I had a vague feeling that something was missing or contradictory, but I couldn’t place my finger on it. Since I couldn’t figure it out, I’m not letting that affect my opinion of the book.

I was confused at times about Milo, Tina’s cat. He was sometimes big as a bobcat, and other times he was small enough to put in her pocket or messenger bag. If he can change his size, that’s fine (and actually cool) but it wasn’t clear to me if that was the case. This is such a small thing, though, and I can overlook it.

I enjoyed the sexual tension between Tina and Andre. I was surprised at Tina’s restraint. I guess I’m used to paranormal romance where they jump into bed after a day of knowing the person. Don’t expect that to happen in this series. Tina has urges and needs, but she doesn’t let herself act on them.

There’s a lot of action in this book. There’s also a lot of Tina deliberating the morality of her decisions and behavior. Some people might be put off by how much she dwells on whether she will be rewarded or punished for her actions.

The best thing, in my opinion, is the novelty of the story. It’s a mix of science fiction and supernatural contemporary fantasy. This is one book where you can find a mad scientist and a demon pages apart from one another. It’s also very original in that Tina isn’t a creature. Her power comes from her father, Saturn. I’m not sure how a planet fathers a child, but that’s okay, because Tina doesn’t understand it either.

I thought Damn Him to Hell was an excellent book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Both books in series are great- buy it and you are in for a treat, what more can I write?
The book was entertaining. The characters have personality. I have read all of the books in the Saturn's Daughters series and loved them all.

A little out there, but Baltimore is a little strange in places. You have to suspend all belief in the real world.

Plot: The struggle with all sequels is not being able to remember what happened in the first book. Luckily, Libba Bray thinks of everything and feeds the reader small snippets of what happened in The Diviners to help jog memory.

Libba Bray introduces a new paranormal mystery that unravels little by little. Libba Bray never fails to get me invested in one of her unique mysteries and the tale of the Sleeping Sickness is no different. I will say that Lair of Dreams lacks the creeptastic gore that I came to love in The Diviners. Instead, I connected with Lair of Dreams on a more emotional level.

Along with the Sleeping Sickness mystery, Lair of Dreams hints at the overall conflict which leaves the reader with nothing but questions as the novel concludes.

Characters: Everyone that you know and love from The Diviners is back, and then some! We are introduced to Ling Chan, the Chinese-Irish-American girl with a love for science and a knack for dream walking. I abso-tive-ly adored her spunk and the amount of love and attention that Libba Bray put into her character.

Along with some new faces, the gang reunites and digs deeper into their Diviner gifts. While The Diviners was Evie-centric, I felt that Evie was barely present in Lair in Dreams. Instead, we follow Henry's desire to become a musician and explore his emotional past. My main obsession with this series is Bray's dedication to her characters. Each person that makes an appearance in Lair of Dreams is breathed into life with enough backstory to make you empathize or want to learn more. Evie is clearly going through a rough patch after the events of The Diviners and we are able to see how Naughty Jon affected her and her relationships with others.

The love triangle that played second fiddle in The Diviners comes more to light in Lair of Dreams and rips my soul into little pieces. I lost a lot of hope for my ship, but I'm not giving up! NEVER.

World Building: While reading this book, I had to actively stop myself from using 1920s slang when talking to family and friends. This world is so engulfing that I physically had to pull myself back to the 21st century. One thing that makes Libba Bray's 1920s so perfect is that she doesn't shy from its brutal history. The KKK rears its ugly head, the Chinese citizens are threatened with deportation, and African Americans have to watch their music stolen from the streets of Harlem and paraded as a White invention. It is also fascinating that the characters remark on The Great American Future and Exceptionalism while damning minorities in the same breath.

Short N Sweet: Lair of Dreams is posi-tut-tely thrilling and will have you obsessively refreshing GoodReads for an update on the third installment.

Lair of Dreams A Diviners Novel The Diviners Libba Bray Books Reviews

This second Diviners novel does not disappoint. Libba Bray breathes life into her clutch of main characters, who are as complex and complicated, conflicted and confused, as the readers who immerse themselves in this brilliant and terrifying landscape she has created. Nothing in Lair of Dreams is pat or hackneyed; the young adults at the center of the series are fraught with insecurities and caught in a web of life and death --and what stalks between-- but they are also relatable, familiar in their yearning for love, closure, understanding, and recognition. I love that the larger than life supernatural rush of the plot never takes away from the basic humanity of the characters. The horror of nightmarish evil Bray's characters must work against in Lair of Dreams certainly got into my head, and I read through the wee hours of the night, unwilling to sleep when so much in the novel's world was at stake. I take some comfort in the novel's underlying promise of hope, of good prevailing over evil. The next book in the Diviners series will reveal whether I am right or wrong; either way, I cannot wait to dive in!
I had the perfect plan, I started the audio book right at the beginning of September, and since a 20 hour audioboook usually takes me a month to listen to, the timing of me finishing this would be perfectly timed for when the 3rd book came out. Well, it is only September 6th, and I have already finished it. As far as being a sequel, I can say that I enjoyed this one almost as much, if not just as much, and the first book. There were definitely things I liked more about this book and there were things that I enjoyed more in the first book.
The thing that disappointed me a little about Lair of Dreams was that the plot/big mystery/the villain of this book was far less interesting than Naughty John. Pretty early on I was able to figure out who the villain was, and the fact that the our main characters couldn't figure it out just made me frustrated, because it was SO obvious. Also, The dream world was far less interesting to me than a serial killer.
What I did love more about this book that The Diviners was that we got more Evie and Sam. I just love those two so much, and one of my favorite tropes in the fake relationship one, so I was living every time I read their parts. Like I was at the end of The Diviners, I am still worried that Libba Bray might make the whole love triangle a huger part in the next book, which while it wouldn't completely ruin the book, it would definitely knock it down a start or two.
One thing that I loved about the first book that carried on into this book was the atmosphere of the 1920's. Libba Bray continued to just be amazing and make the reader actually feel like you are in that time period. I also, well I wouldn't say enjoyed, but appreciated the emphasis on immigrants in this book and the prejudice/racism during the time period. The one part that got me the most angry was "The Wolf Among Us" chapter with Sarah Snow. I had to stop listening for a second, because I was so angry that people once (and some still do) think like that. While it was hard to listen to parts like those, I think they are important, and the impact is important.
One final thing because I am pretty sure I forgot to put this in my Diviners review, CHECK OUT THE AUDIOBOOK. Libba Brays writing with January LaVoy reading it is just AMAZING.

Plot The struggle with all sequels is not being able to remember what happened in the first book. Luckily, Libba Bray thinks of everything and feeds the reader small snippets of what happened in The Diviners to help jog memory.

Libba Bray introduces a new paranormal mystery that unravels little by little. Libba Bray never fails to get me invested in one of her unique mysteries and the tale of the Sleeping Sickness is no different. I will say that Lair of Dreams lacks the creeptastic gore that I came to love in The Diviners. Instead, I connected with Lair of Dreams on a more emotional level.

Along with the Sleeping Sickness mystery, Lair of Dreams hints at the overall conflict which leaves the reader with nothing but questions as the novel concludes.

Characters Everyone that you know and love from The Diviners is back, and then some! We are introduced to Ling Chan, the Chinese-Irish-American girl with a love for science and a knack for dream walking. I abso-tive-ly adored her spunk and the amount of love and attention that Libba Bray put into her character.

Along with some new faces, the gang reunites and digs deeper into their Diviner gifts. While The Diviners was Evie-centric, I felt that Evie was barely present in Lair in Dreams. Instead, we follow Henry's desire to become a musician and explore his emotional past. My main obsession with this series is Bray's dedication to her characters. Each person that makes an appearance in Lair of Dreams is breathed into life with enough backstory to make you empathize or want to learn more. Evie is clearly going through a rough patch after the events of The Diviners and we are able to see how Naughty Jon affected her and her relationships with others.

The love triangle that played second fiddle in The Diviners comes more to light in Lair of Dreams and rips my soul into little pieces. I lost a lot of hope for my ship, but I'm not giving up! NEVER.

World Building While reading this book, I had to actively stop myself from using 1920s slang when talking to family and friends. This world is so engulfing that I physically had to pull myself back to the 21st century. One thing that makes Libba Bray's 1920s so perfect is that she doesn't shy from its brutal history. The KKK rears its ugly head, the Chinese citizens are threatened with deportation, and African Americans have to watch their music stolen from the streets of Harlem and paraded as a White invention. It is also fascinating that the characters remark on The Great American Future and Exceptionalism while damning minorities in the same breath.

Short N Sweet Lair of Dreams is posi-tut-tely thrilling and will have you obsessively refreshing GoodReads for an update on the third installment.

He needed to travel across America again (from Maine to California and back home to New York), not as a tourist, not to see the sights--but to engage with people, Americans--see what they were thinking, hear what they were talking about. Steinbeck was the kind of man who could walk into any bar or hardware store or gas station and engage with and maybe even make a friend for a moment or a lifetime of the person he encountered. To be sure, whisky often seemed a catalyst to his socializing. Certainly he was a charming man. To make it even more charming he traveled with this poodle, Charley. Steinbeck didn't give out his name, didn't want to be treated as the big writer. Thus he gathered a very honest, undistorted view of 1960 America. I also didn't know Steinbeck didn't live very long. He died in 1968 at the age of 66.

This has quickly become one of my favorite books. It reads like a novel, despite its classification as nonfiction. This book is charming and fun, yet beautifully written without being overly poetic. His journey and experiences are truthful, playful, and at times, raw and challenging to read. The parallels of Steinbeck's journey throughout the United States in 1960 in comparison to today's challenges in this same country are eye opening. This is a book I already want to read again after just finishing.

Mr. Steinbeck's intention of his travel with Charley, his old poodle, in Rocinante, a noble camping truck named after Don Quixote's horse, was two folds first, his innate wanderlust had grown bigger as his ages advanced. He defied the senility of mind and body as a man who could still be a manly husband to his wife and function as an able-bodied man in society; second, Mr. Steinbeck wanted to see America as he had known on a personal level and to ascertain what could define true American identity and character. What he experienced in his own eyes across the land was part rhapsody of begone days he used to remember and part treatise on American national characteristics. Mr. Steinbeck was indeed a Don Quixote in his pursuit of finding America as portrayed in his novels and as remembered in his memory. But most of all, Mr. Steinbeck was a quintessential American writer in his tough-guy demeanor smeared in the narrative who had a deep affection for his country despite its foibles and imperfections.
For a travel story written 60 years ago, it is remarkably like road trips in the US today. The story is compelling with a great partner Charley, the delightful French poodle. Descriptions are inspiring, characters along the way are appealing. It is such a real journey, so fascinating to travel along. The last chapter is so disheartening, it clearly shows this country has made no progress in the dream of democracy.
Being well aware of the recent challenges of the historical authenticity of the writings of the book, I plunged into this travelogue with the same fascination of reading Mr. Steinbeck’s other books. It presents itself as an intriguing look of America in the early 1960’s. Mr. Steinbeck reflects upon how we as Americans were beginning to change in this country, for example our speech patterns melding after “20 years of television and 40 years of radio,” only after 20 and 40 years of these inventions? He searched out the common people among the roadside diners and campsites and gave us a glimpse of the common American of this time period. You’ll be surprise how much has and has not changed over the past 65 years. A good read. I would love to make the same journey he did.

I have been looking for a collection this complete for all the works of H.P. Lovecraft and this is it!!! There are a total of 100 Novellas, Short Stories and Collaborations and Rare Stories from this genius. Comparing to Wikipedia Bibliography List, there are very few (less than 5 I think) stories that are not here, but you can't get any other collection that offers more than this one. From 1897 when he wrote his first (published) short story (at the age of 7) until his lastest collaborations with other authors, it gives you everything a fan/collector can wish for. I was in doubt about purchasing this one, but after a thorough comparison I went for it, and at $2.99, instantly delivered to your Kindle, via Wi-Fi or 3G, you can't go wrong.

I took the time to make a list of the stories on the order they were written (because some were published several years after). The stories on the book are listed alphabetically, but although most of the stories are independent and not related to others, some might actually include small references to places, characters or events that occurred on another. This is by far the best collection of lovecraft I have ever seen. I even compared the table of contents (that you can view by clicking on the image) to the one on wikipedia and found that only these stories from his collaborations were missing- Bothon, Four oclock- Relic of a forgoton world- and the Sorcery of Aphlar are the only missing peices.
This collection even has his juvenilia work as well. (The other juvenilia listed on wikipedia says that its never been put out in print form.) This collection covers all of his fiction work with the exception of the ones mentioned above.
None of his poetry philisophical or scientific work is here but for most die hard fans its the horror fiction that every one gravitates towards at any rate.
These stories are listed in alphabetical order- they are not listed by timeline. Some die hard fans may find that a little frustrating but with the amount of material for the price you cant do much better- for those who want nearly all of lovecrafts work in one place look no further.
NOTE Before I went to review this collection, I was unaware of the controversy surrounding it -- apparently it was compiled by a Lovecraft fan and posted online for free, and someone else is publishing the compilation on to make money off her hard work. If this is true, then shame on whoever's trying to profit off someone else's work... but not only did I get this collection for free via a free e-book program, but it appears this volume is no longer available to purchase on , so at least the thief isn't getting any more money for their theft...

I've been curious about the works of Lovecraft for some time -- while not terribly successful during his life, and while his racist views have made him an uncomfortable figure today, his mythos has seen a revival in recent years, with his take on cosmic horror reverberating with many readers and inspiring many other writers and artists from Stephen King to Guillermo del Toro to the webcomic artist Wayward Martian. This collection gave me a chance to become acquainted with his work, and while his writing isn't superb, his imagination is vivid and chilling, and the universe he created is one that won't soon be forgotten.

Many of Lovecraft's most famous works are here, as well as some of his more obscure stories. Of these stories, "At the Mountains of Madness" would have to be my favorite, though I also highly recommend "The Color Out of Space," "Shadow Over Innsmouth," "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," "Cool Air," "The Horror of Red Hook," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Music of Erich Zaan," "The Shadow Out of Time," "The Thing on the Doorstep," and the non-horrific and actually rather hilarious satirical "Sweet Ermengarde." In all but that last story, Lovecraft manages to build a real sense of horror and suspense, and while sometimes the climax/twist can seem obvious to the reader, the payoff is still satisfying in most cases.

Lovecraft rarely resorted to the creatures of horror that were mainstays back in his day -- vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc. His creatures were bizarre, ones with strangely shaped bodies, eyes and tentacles in odd places, and biology completely unknown to science. He seemed to understand that the most horrifying thing of all is things of the unknown, and tapped into this quite frequently. And notably, many of his stories share a universe, with elements and creatures and events of one often being referenced in another later on. This is a tactic that provided a sense of continuity to his works, though it wasn't necessary to read all of them to understand what was going on... and seems to have inspired the "shared universe" that other authors have indulged in, such as Stephen King.

I wasn't as fond of the "Dreamland" stories in this collection as I was of his others -- "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath," "The Silver Key," "The White Ship," etc. I did enjoy his "Cats of Ulthar," which is set in this universe, but it's the exception.

And yes... Lovecraft was infamously racist even for his day, and it leaves its uncomfortable mark on many of these stories. One character owns a cat whose name would be considered a racial slur today, and his disdain for not only people of color but people of different social strata and ethnic backgrounds will make the more politically correct reader squirm and squint. Some people may have trouble overcoming this as they read, which I can fully understand.

While a controversial writer, Lovecraft has left his mark on the literary world, and his mythos has become beloved to a new generation of readers. His work is worth a look if you enjoy horror that's far more than the standard "monster hunts a group of teens/young adults" that's pretty much defined modern horror, and if nothing else it's a nice look at the origins of the Cthulhu mythos.

Luckily, Sebastian who is in France manages to rescue the nephew of Robert Fulton and send him to Stranje House where he works to create a steamboat and other weapons to help England in its fight against Napoleon. However, this brash young American manages to really rub Lady Jane the wrong way (leading, I hope, to the romance in the next book.)

I liked Tess and thought she was a great character. Her fears of coming madness weren't so much about herself as they were about what they would do to man she loves. She was an outwardly combative person who hid a very loving nature. Gabriel was also a great hero who is overcoming a difficult childhood. The only problem is that, every time he turns around, he seems to gather a new injury or two. Tess is as determined to keep him from harm as he is to protect her.

This is a fun alternative history series with all sorts of great characters.

This series is so wonderful! It is full of suspense, intrigue, loving relationships, and what can be considered a family. A beautifully thought out story that was wonderful.
An intriguing, fun-filled, Regency romance, with the Stranje House women falling in love with men, who shockingly accept their talents and skills while adoring and enduring their independence. So far Tess and Lord Ravencross are my favorite couple released thus far!
I love these books. I've read the first 2 so far and I'm hooked. I love the characters, every single one. The girls are brilliant and Mrs Stranje is wonderful! I love the men who are introduced into their lives! I am really enjoying the timeline she has written for the stories! Wonderful books! Can't wait to read them all.

Exile for Dreamers by Kathleen Baldwin

This is the second book in a young adult historical fiction/mystery series with a gothic feel to it. I enjoyed this book much more than book #1, which I liked but was a bit slow for me. In this book, the main focus is on Tess and her dreams, as well as his complicated relationship with Lord Ravencross. There is of course a storyline that involves political intrigue and danger for Tess and her friends. This was a very good read. I recommend this series.
Although Miss Stranje's Home for Girls appears on the outside to have promise to reform young rebels into well-behaved ladies, little do the British know that these girls are being groomed as spies to fight Napoleon and his henchmen. This second book in the Stranje House series features Tess, a smart athletic young woman who is learning all the tricks of the spy trade, and her dreams which reveal possible future events can aid the war effort--if she can live through the horror of them. Then, the affections of Lord Ravencross add heart-throbbing romance into this spy's life.
Baldwin has made her characters into living people. The dialogue is real and captures emotion and sometimes even brings laughter. The descriptions of lifestyle, inventions, clothing, books and food during Napoleon's time are vivid and based on good research. Well done, Kathleen! Can't wait for the next book!
Couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. No sophomoric slump with book #2. In fact, I thought it was better than the first book. The way the situations were dealt with seemed much more realistic. I loved the tension between Tess and Ravencross. Characters from the first book are back and a new character is introduced. Its the perfect blend of action, suspense, and romance. I very seldom read a book twice, but that is not going to be the case here! I highly recommend reading it.
Oh wow! This book was amazing. It is told from Tess Aubreyson's point of view and it has so many twists and turns that I had a hard time putting it down! In this story Tess is a "student" at Stranje House. She is supposedly at the boarding school to learn proper etiquette and such. In reality, she is there being trained as a spy. The ladies of Stranje House must keep Napoleon's spies from getting their hands on certain information and documents. Tess has the uncanny ability of prophetic dreams, which she rejects throughout the story. Lord Ravencross (Gabriel) is the hero of this story and I felt their connection was genuine. I loved watching Tess develop as a character, she softens up a bit, but still keeps her toughness. I am looking forward to the next novel in this series!

First, the genre. It's being marketed as romance. If you don't like romance, but love time-travel books, you still need to buy it. I'd call it sci-fi and romance.
If I'm counting right, this is Melissa Lee's fifth novel. Her first few were good, and they keep getting better and better.
I love everything about this book. The romance is just right. Once again, Melissa Lee paints a picture of romance that is accurate and beautiful, and, better yet, isn't confused with lust. Parts of it get a little weird.... but if they didn't, it wouldn't be a time-travel story ;)
Speaking of which, I generally don't like time travel stories. I've been a sci-fi fan forever, so usually the bad physics and lack of thought in a story ruins time travel stories. Pick a Star Trek episode with time-travel. Most of have you thinking "Why didn't they just...."
Forever Layla avoids all these pitfalls. The story is solid, and it had me thinking about it for days. It's beautiful how all the parts fit together, even when you mentally re-construct the timeline from another characters point of view. I could go on and on about the great stuff in here, but it'd all be spoilers... on the one hand, it wouldn't matter too much, because one of those books, you know the kind, the ones that you can re-read again and again and delight in noticing little hints and things you didn't see, or wondered about the first time through. But people don't like when I do that, so I won't. I'll let you discover them on your own. Go read this right now.
How would I rate Forever Layla? Well, let's put it this way. It's easily in the top five books I've reviewed here so far (and that's facing some pretty stiff competition.... including Armored Hearts... also by Melissa Lee (and Pauline Creeden....))

OK, so here's the deal At the beginning you will think you made a mistake because this book almost feels like it was written for 12 year olds. A couple of times I almost quit so I could then move on to something with more substance. But, I continued reading because of the great reviews. THEN something happened.... the book started getting amazing! The beginning isn't badd- just to make that point clear. It's just that the rest of the book is so good with so much quality, depth and wonderful twists and turns that it will amaze you in comparison. I cried and cried at one point and then was amazed at the surprises in the plot that revealed themselves to both the characters and the reader. The love story within the book reminded me at times of "The Time Traveler's Wife" which also had such hearfelt moments between a couple that loved thru time. I almost gave it 5 stars but the start of the story didn't merit it. But the second half is so good- who cares. So yes, yes, yes- you must read this book!
Melissa Turner Lee did amazing job with this storyline. The characters in this story will have you to fall in love with them as soon as you meet them. The love from the two main characters stand the test of time, literally. They find each other over and over in many decades through time travel. I was in tears many different times with this story. It had me hooked from the first line in the book until the last word. I absolutely I loved this story. It will keep you hooked until you read the last sentence. This romance is a one of a kind love and you will only find it in this book. Thanks to this author for making me enter her world of time travel and fall in love with this story.
I really enjoyed this book. I've always been intrigued by time travel. Like "The Time Traveler's Wife," this book talks about forever love between two people who at first seem like they were matched to even be a couple. This book kept me hooked and before I knew it, I'd reached the end. Like most time story stories, I'll have to re-read portions of this one over again to help me finally grasp the realities that float and intersect in this story. I also really appreciated how the author made these characters with character. They weren't falling in and out of bed. They wanted their love to be pleasing to the Lord, as they were each taught by their grandmothers. There was obvious passion between the two, but both characters chose to honor their grandmothers who wanted them each to wait until marriage. A good love story.....stories. I recommend this.
I Just finished reading Forever Layla and to be honest im rather speechless. Coherent thought has all but shut down. I want to see Forever Layla on the big screen. I see it so beautifully in my head.

When I first began reading Forever Layla I groaned inwardly. Im sure when I signed up for this tour that I looked at the cover and liked it well enough to sign up. But as I began reading I was so confused I didnt know which was up and thought I would never make it through to the end. Clearly I was super wrong. Somewhere in there I got hooked! Probably around 30%.

Layla as we call her travels from 2014 to 1994. And meets David who shes had a crush on forever shes 24 hes 17 going on 18. They meet, she refuses to tell him her name so he begins to call her Layla. Shes basically heartbroken over this. The Epic love story that is David and Layla ends in heartbreak. Eventually she comes to accept that she really is Layla and they build a life together.

There is a weird kinda instalove, im actually quite on the fence about the instalove. When you read it please share your thoughts with me Id love to get another persons opinion. The characters are likeable. The brilliance (at least to me) is all in the storytelling. You are given tiny bits of info just in passing that later play pretty big parts in the story. Im pretty sure I uttered OooOOhhh more than 3 times while reading. Melissa Turner Lee is nothing short of an amazing storyteller, Forever Layla completely captured me as a reader I couldnt help but smile, laugh and cry with the characters.

I loved this book. It reminded me why I like children’s books so much. There’s always hope in children’s books even if the story is a little darker. And the children in these stories always have spunk - a “you can do anything” attitude - even if they aren’t allowed to leave their house. Sometimes you miss that in adult books.

I think both children and adults would enjoy this book. It has a little bit of everything — a little mystery, a little magic, a little adventure, and a friendship based on a little mischief. And the writer is a good storyteller, which is what matters most to me. She develops a good sense of place while keeping the story moving at a good pace.

One thing to keep in mind for children is that the story line includes topics such as death and kidnapping. Some younger children may not enjoy that as much, but for those kids who like a little mystery and maybe even a little more depth in their tales, they will enjoy it. It’s a simple story with only a few characters mostly taking place in one house - so it’s not a vast world like a Harry Potter. That doesn’t mean it’s not intriguing, just a smaller scale story. It’s more intimate, if you will. But who can resist a mystery about magical birds?

The Aviary went far beyond my expectations. Even though it is marketed towards a tween YA audience, it easily held my attention at 26. It had just the right amount of spook to keep me reading nonstop and trying to guess what had happened to make the birds want to talk so suddenly. Don't start reading it unless you have a few hours because you won't be putting this down!
I bought this book because the cover enticed me and the excerpt was relatively more impressive than the other books that I had gone through. I was happily surprised that this book turned out to be a really good read.
it started out a little slow, but the backstory was needed, so I understand after reading on. once it picked up, it really picked up. The writing is strong and I appreciate the easy read without feeling bored by repeated or simplified language.
Overall a good read for anybody who likes a fun paranormal twist to a good book!
I enjoyed this book a lot! The only reason why it is getting 4 instead of 5 stars is because I figured out the plot twist well in advance. But I should also point out I am 23, and still reading Y.A novels.... Anyway, the book was great. I enjoyed it. It was slow at some points, but very easy to follow along with and understand.
Twelve-year-old Clara Dooley has spent her whole life in the Glendoveer mansion, where her mother is a servant to the kind and elderly matron of the house. Clara has never known another home. In fact, she's confined to the grand estate due to a mysterious heart condition. But it's a comfortable life, and if it weren't for the creepy squawking birds in the aviary out back, a completely peaceful one too.
this was a book i couldn't put down. O'Dell is a great storyteller in that the plot just flows easily. i like an element of the fantastic in novels, and this story had that element. it was quite unique. this could be appropriate for juvenile fiction - fitting for a young teen reader - or any age. that is not an insult! it's a testament to the focus on the storyline, which makes the book accessible, and not other literary elements that can bog a book down if not done well. i would recommend this book highly, but it wouldn't make it to my top recommendations this year.
At first I was a little bored at the beginning. It was kind of slow. But it did pick up and it was good! Made me get a little teary eyed at some parts but to me that's just a sign that it's a good read! Really wasn't what I was expecting, thought it was going to be a little but scarier and it wasn't at all. Was more of a heart felt book with a little suspense but I kind of predicted everything while I was reading it but was still a good book!
A great , classic kids' novel, written with great suspense and creativity here. I thoughts the many twists and turns were wonderful, and the many kids I have known have loved this book as well.

Meg Cabot is a gifted writer, especially of young adult beach books. This is a mostly fun read for anyone who enjoyed the Princess Diaries, which I loved.

A washed up pop star is scraping by after her mom ran off with her money, and keeps solving murders. It's a fun bubbly read with enjoyable characters. Mostly. But there are also things that make me want to book her time with a therapist.

Like many rom-com books, she searches for a fun quirk, and Cabot then overplays it until it starts to feel like really therapy is in order. (Like Kinsella's Shopaholic series) Here, food. Heather eats compulsively and all her songs are about food - it seems like she needs a therapist and eating disorder specialist stat, making me sad rather than wanting to chuckle.

Then there are the men (who talk down to her and use her), the way she has no boundaries, and demands for her emotional labor. The detective who doesn't respect her instincts even after she singlehandedly solves 3 murders, and the cops who openly mock her. The ex boyfriend who continually stalks her, demanding she ignore his cheating (that he doesn't apologize for), betrayal and drunkenness, and help him process his feeeeeelings... then leaves her to continue his charmed life with his actual partner. There's the dad, a stranger after decades in prison, who moves in to her house and then orders her around and allows her ex in to demand more emotional labor (instead of, you know, refusing). I just keep thinking how much she needs boundaries, and how being a pushover isn't 'nice'.

Then there's the physical stuff. The love interest regularly forbids her from detecting (ironically, given that he's a detective and could instead teach her), and makes his point by grabbing her shoulders, her arms, and pinning her against the wall with his body. Heads up for those of us who find that kind of thing difficult to read about, especially from the love interest.

I have been trying to get an opportunity to read some of Meg Cabot's work. She is a prolific writer and I have always heard good things about her books, but haven't been able to find the time to read any of them, while trying to get Misfit McCabe launched, write the sequel, read material and write reviews for the Lulu Book Review, and oh, there's that little thing called the full time day job (which usually ends up being full time and a half). With a title like Size 12 Is Not Fat, I decided that I had to start there because the title just grabbed me. For someone who struggles daily battling the weight issue, I was looking forward to reading a book with a heroine who was not built along the lines of a toothpick. Not that toothpicks are bad, but they are much more prevalent between the covers of our favorite books than they are walking the streets. Also, I figured that with only 3 books in the series so far, I could catch up much more quickly than with The Princess Diaries series, which is getting ready to launch book number 10. Plus, I like mysteries and the bulk of my "for pleasure" reading is light weight mysteries.

On page one, Ms. Cabot had me. The story opens with Heather Wells in a dressing room struggling into a new pair of jeans she wants to purchase. In another dressing room, a girl with a voice like a chipmunk inquires as to whether there is a size smaller than zero. Heather immediately dubs chipmunk voice "Less than Zero" and continues to refer to her by that name. I could feel the giggle starting from my toes on that one. To come up with a character named Less Than Zero and take a dig at vanity sizing at the same time was brilliant. For that reason alone, I was ready to dive into the life of Heather Wells and see where I ended up.

The character of Heather Wells is modeled after Britney Spears in a what if fashion. What if a pop sensation lost her recording contract, her boyfriend, gained a dress size or two, and her mother ran off with her manager to another country stealing all of her money, while her father was in jail? Oh, and because she was performing for much of her teenage years, she didn't have any formal education to fall back on when everything blew up. Heather somehow wangles a job working in a primarily freshman residence hall for New York College, and lives a couple blocks away with her ex-boyfriend's brother, Cooper Cartwright. She helps organize and keep track of Cooper's expenses and does his billing, for which he lets her live in his 3 story pink stucco brownstone in the Village. The back drop of the residence hall is filled with realistic detail which comes from Ms. Cabot having worked in a New York freshman residence hall after graduating with an art degree, and finding no jobs that would pay the bills. Like Heather Wells, one of the main draws to the job was the offer of free tuition, so she could get a degree in something that would enable her to earn a living.

The character Heather Wells is portrayed as a 28 year old of arrested development and self-esteem issues due to the circumstances surrounding her formative years. Her maturity level is much younger than her years, and is closer to the level of the freshman residents of Fischer Hall. As we have seen through the eyes of the media and all of the attention on Britney Spears, that Britney certainly does not operate at the maturity level her years would lead you to expect. Neither does Heather Wells. She has a major, adolescent crush on her landlord, boss, and ex-boyfriend's brother, Cooper and fantasizes about him throughout the book, but is unable to communicate her feelings for him in adult manner. She also doesn't seem to know how to handle the attentions of Jordan Cartwright, the ex-boyfriend, who keeps coming around trying to reconcile with her, which confuses Heather because he just announced his engagement to someone else.

Against this background, the female students of Fischer Hall seem to be dying off at the rate of one a week, doing something so unfeminine as elevator surfing. Heather is especially suspicious because it would appear that the girls were elevator surfing alone, which never happens, and the girls in question would seem to be the least likely people on the planet to take up elevator surfing. And of paramount importance to Heather, one of the girls liked Ziggy, and no one who liked Ziggy, the uncoolest cartoon character of all, would EVER elevator surf. Of course, when no one else thought that there was anything to investigate, Heather decides to investigate events on her own. Move over Nancy Drew, Heather's on the case now and she doesn't like anyone killing her girls.

Size 12 Is Not Fat is an easy and fun read. Meg Cabot draws colorful characters which surround Heather and provide her with a sense of family, albeit an odd one. Through the dint of not being able to let go of the mystery surrounding the deaths of the freshman women of Fischer Hall, Heather ultimately prevails in solving the mystery, and in the process nearly gets Jordan Cartwright killed as well as herself, but learns something about herself along the way.
I bought Meg Cabot's "Size 12 is Not Fat" yesterday and only put it down for absolute necessities, like Fritos and that mini-butterfinger I'd been saving. What a pleasure it was to meet her heroine Heather Wells, a has-been teen singing sensation reduced to working in a college residence hall (don't call it a dorm!). She's got enough on her hands fending off her ex-boyfriend's inept advances while desperately trying to catch the attention of his oh-so-much hotter older brother, Cooper, when co-eds start dropping like flies. Literally! They're dropping down the elevator shaft. With nothing to go on but a hunch and an emergency Kit Kat, Heather sets out to prove that these "accidents" weren't accidents at all, and in the process makes HERSELF the killer's next target.

I loved every minute of Meg Cabot's book. I've been looking for a pure pleasure read, and "Size 12" more than fit the bill. Action, romance, and intrigue all had their place in this well-paced tale. And Heather is just a great all-around heroine. Despite her unique past, she reads like "every woman" and I was drawn into the story immediately. Just what I was hoping for! Loved it so much, I went ahead and purchased the next in this series. Can't wait to see what lies in store for Heather (and Cooper...PLEASE let there be more Cooper).

If you're looking for a fun beach read or just something to help you get out of your own head and into someone else's, you won't regret this purchase.

I like it...but somethings...missing. This book was mediocre, same with the first one. A bit corny both of them but once i start a series I have to know how it ends. I do like the fact the editing is good, the storyline wasn't bad either. The thing is I just don't have a connection to the characters really, or not enough of one. I like love interest and the female lead but at times I wish there were more with them to get a better insight on their relationship, even in the zombie world. The thing this author doesn't do well enough, maybe is making me feel the loss of characters. Even with the first book with Viv or whatever, I probably mixed up the sister's deaths but it was kind of like oh...that sucks, well back to the love story, maybe we will get a nice heated kiss scene! Note that I felt nothing for the loss and my mind went naughty for other things, which I didn't get. And the ending death scene could have been heartbreaking but i didn't even shed a tear, which says a lot because I'm a big baby when it comes to sad parts in books/deaths. Good story overall, maybe the third will be better. I have hopes it will and I do think the author is good at her job she just needs to make me feel the pain a little more.

Wow... I saw this was available for purchase late last night and had to buy it (and finished it). I wanted so badly to see what happened after the ending in Love & the Zombie Apocalypse. I did not regret it! The next book is to be released later this year, and I can't wait. Awesome series.
Read the first book in the series Love & the Zombie Apocalypse and loved it..and read this one as one..the second jn the series and loved it as well. The series so far has kept my interest and i am waiting for the third book to come out. I would reccomend this series to zombies lovers!
I have been waiting for this and was so excited it was released. WOW, it was just Amazing, If you like the Walking Dead, you will Absolutely Love this Trilogy! I was out of breath reading this, I felt like I was right there in the Zombie Apocalypse with the characters! On the edge of my seat throughout the entire book! This one had a twist, I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but WOW the little twist has really thrown a curve into the story! I cannot wait for the last book. Chelsea has done yet another fantastic job! My favorite Author.. Hands down!
I loved the first book so the moment I finished it I picked up the second one. Where the first book gave me chills and made my heart race, this book had me crying. I loved loved loved it.
This is a great fast paced series. It is NON stop action from the first page to the last. The author doesn't pull punches. Good, important characters die. It's seemed that everyone would fall into pairs and be madly in love, but like love, things get messy and people change. I like that nothing is set in stone. I am really looking forward to the final book in this great series!
Good stuff. An entertaining, easy read. Some off kilter, common sense stuff - I mean who wears shorts or a mini skirt during the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? I mean, seriously.

The author is kind of like George R.R. Martin in that she doesn't have an issue killing central characters. Phew! Don't get too attached here people!

All in all a great read. Distracted me from a 4 hour flight.
Chelsea Bellingeri NEVER disappoints. This book had everything suspense, horror, romance, humor, and some amazing twists and turns. I could not put this book down. I had to find out how Cage, Rachel, Nicky, Adam, and the whole crew made it out next. Chelsea has a unique way of describing events so that the reader feels like they are right there with the characters. She is an extremely talented author, and I look forward to her next book.

Megan has crafted an extremely amazing sequel that easily surpasses her debut novel, and sets the stage to what should be an epic conclusion to this fantastic series.
Everything about this book is well done, from the astoundingly beautiful cover to the engrossing writing, the well-written characters and the carefully thought out and developed plot that will keep you entertained the whole way through.
This won't be a long review, I say that because I don't want to give away any spoilers and in discussing this book I'm afraid I'll do just that, there's just so much I want to write about that happened in this story, but I want people to read this book themselves and discover everything without any warnings beforehand, and trust me, it's all good!
The book opens after the conclusion of the last one, Juliet is back in London, secretly trying to find a cure for her condition now that her drugs aren't working that well anymore, there have been murders occurring by a serial killer nicknamed the "Wolf Of Whitechapel", these murders are all linked and once Juliet figures out just what that is, she then discovers just who it is, it seems someone/something has followed her from the island to London, and the one thing they're after is Juliet!
I can't praise this book enough, it's just fabulous and the fact that it's loosely based on the 'Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde' story adds another layer to the tale.
For those of you who like books featuring: action/adventure and suspense all put together in a historical setting then this is the series for you.
I'm highly anticipating the third and final book in this series, I'm desperate to know how this will all end.

Megan Shepherd did it again! Dark, romantic, exciting carryover from Madman's Daughter. Pacing is great, characters are interesting, and of course I'm left eagerly awaiting the final installment. She writes beautifully and is a great storyteller.
Megan Shepherd writes a compelling story for sure. This book was a page turner and kept me interested until the end. There was an unfortunate quest for a cure unfulfilled. It seemed like the author was not sure how to end the book and opted for an abrupt finale in which questions still loomed. Maybe this is due to the fact that a third installment is planned...
It completes the first book just right. And it made me want to hurry and read the next book. Really enjoyed it.
Loved this story...may have enjoyed it better than book 1! I love love love Edward. Such a fun twist on a classic story!
So much drama was dropped in the last chapter. I loved this book as much as the first. I'm still torn between Montgomery and Edward. They both have good traits and flaws and that makes it hard to pick.
I read this as a follow up to book 1. It started out strong but mostly meandered all over the place. The plot lacked focus as much as the leading character, really. I realize the character is 16 and discovering herself, but she had resources she didn't seem to trust or utilize until the end of the book. Not sure I'll make it to book 3.
This book is mostly just filler to get to the third book and resolves very little. The amount of attention focused on the love triangle to advance the plot was tedious, and made the heroine less likable in this installment. I hope the third book doesn't stray further from the brilliance of the first.

Memory Man is the first book (of two so far) in Baldacci's newest series featuring a rather unique character named Amos Decker. As a 22 year old playing his first NFL game, Decker, on his very first play, suffers a traumatic head injury that not only ended his football career, it induced hyperthymesia and synesthesia -- resulting in his never forgetting anything and his counting in colors and seeing time as pictures in his head.

I won't provide a plot description as this can be gotten from the Amazon Book Description above. Rather, I'll provide some of my feelings about Memory Man which, hopefully, will be of help in deciding if it is a book you'll want to read.

Overall, there several key positive aspects that far outweigh what I consider to be its one, but not insignificant, key flaw.

On the positive side, Baldacci writes in a brisk narrative style and composes dialogue that is realistic for the characters speaking it. The plot is multi-faceted, interesting, fast-paced and has an above-average amount of twists and turns. And, perhaps, most importantly, Baldacci's main character and more secondary "good guy" characters are pretty well-developed and likeable enough to make me interested in going along with them on their next case. Further, you're not likely to forget a villain in this book anytime soon.

For me, these aspects override a number of the actions of Amos Decker and some of the motivations of a villain that I consider to be far-fetched enough to almost push me to the very edge of my ability to suspend belief. This flaw resulted in my deducting one star from my overall rating.

If you can accept a plot that while fun and interesting has some credibility issues, than I think Memory Man is a book worthy of your consideration. I, for one, found Memory Man to have enough merit to make me interested enough to read the second book in the Amos Decker series, called The Last Mile.

Love Baldacci...you're always afraid that,as with many, too many other 'Branded' Authors, that he/she will start to write to fulfill their contractual obligations. I am extremely pleased to tell whomever reads this review that this is absolutely not the case with "MEMORY MAN" By David Baldacci!
I could go on and write a review of this great book, but I will spare you my story review, because all I will tell you is that you will not be disappointed, at all, with this latest book by Mr. Baldacci. I read a lot, by probably most/all the so called 'branded' Authors and I was concerned that this Memory Man would be a let-down...it's not.
The first half of the book tells the base story Nd then goes into a tremendous building to a 'fire-burning', turning, last half of the book.
You don't know me...I don't know you, but, as an avid reader, or for a great summer read, most definitely buy this David Baldacci "Memory Man'...it's truly worth whatever you have to pay for it. Enjoy it!...You will.
Other reviewers complained about the ending and motive for the crime. They were not nearly forceful enough. This is easily the worst wrap up I've ever read. The whole book is fairly farfetched, but the motive was a flat out insult. I promise it will make you angry, so consider yourself warned.
I don't know how this book got a good review. The plot just rambled on and on. I've pretty much read all of Baldacci's books and this is the first one I did not like. I read The Last Mile, second book in this series, which is enjoyable and doesn't ramble on about the little our trivial. I guess this book being in the first of a series is about the development and back ground of Amos Decker. If I had read this book first, I would not have bothered with the other book in this series. If this is your first Baldacci book and you do not like it, I'd advise you to try one more of his books, he is one of my favorite authors and one I'll continue reading.
I liked it. Not the best Baldacci book I've read but certainly entertaining enough to make me want to buy the next in the series. The hook is Amos Decker's incredible memory and ability to see colors when others would feel emotions, a condition caused by a traumatic head injury. Using these abilities, Decker solves the mystery of his wife and child's murder along with several others by the same killer. The pace of the story ebbed and flowed throughout so it was not the fastest read ever, but it built to a climax that though not the greatest did pull the reader along quite well. I enjoyed Decker's deductive reasoning as he pursued the killer, tapping into his exceptional memory for clues no one else had the ability to find. The secondary characters and villain are well drawn and work well in the story. One flaw in this, and many other books, is that at the climactic moment the villain is willing to talk and explain, or allow Decker to do so, rather than act. I've always had a hard time with that. Otherwise I enjoyed the book and recommend it to murder mystery lovers.
Baldacci's novels are well written and full of detail. The details in this book are so vivid that one can actually get in the scene and feel like one is a witness to what is transpiring in the novel. Such is the way I felt while reading Memory Man. It's quite believable that a vicious NFL tackle can either kill you or make you a genius savant - which in this case happened and eventually helped the main character as a top notch detective. He is able to remember every detail of everything he sees like a video recorder so it's quite helpful in his profession. However, his family gets killed and so a novel is started with this devastating loss.
The story unfolds ever so slowly and at times, painstakingly slow but there is enough detail there to get one keep reading. The reward is satisfying. If you have read other Baldacci novels, they are always full of minute details and the characters are more nuanced than most. You get to know them as much as you want to know the character in a book.
All in all, it's a great book to read. I have ordered the other 2 books in the series and regretfully, I have not started reading the second book yet. I have a lot to read before that but there is always that book to look forward to.
Memory Man is the first book (of two so far) in Baldacci's newest series featuring a rather unique character named Amos Decker. As a 22 year old playing his first NFL game, Decker, on his very first play, suffers a traumatic head injury that not only ended his football career, it induced hyperthymesia and synesthesia -- resulting in his never forgetting anything and his counting in colors and seeing time as pictures in his head.

I won't provide a plot description as this can be gotten from the Book Description above. Rather, I'll provide some of my feelings about Memory Man which, hopefully, will be of help in deciding if it is a book you'll want to read.

Overall, there several key positive aspects that far outweigh what I consider to be its one, but not insignificant, key flaw.

On the positive side, Baldacci writes in a brisk narrative style and composes dialogue that is realistic for the characters speaking it. The plot is multi-faceted, interesting, fast-paced and has an above-average amount of twists and turns. And, perhaps, most importantly, Baldacci's main character and more secondary "good guy" characters are pretty well-developed and likeable enough to make me interested in going along with them on their next case. Further, you're not likely to forget a villain in this book anytime soon.

For me, these aspects override a number of the actions of Amos Decker and some of the motivations of a villain that I consider to be far-fetched enough to almost push me to the very edge of my ability to suspend belief. This flaw resulted in my deducting one star from my overall rating.

If you can accept a plot that while fun and interesting has some credibility issues, than I think Memory Man is a book worthy of your consideration. I, for one, found Memory Man to have enough merit to make me interested enough to read the second book in the Amos Decker series, called The Last Mile.

She’ll be sent to prison instead. When a woman offers her an alternative, one that will see Maggie placed in better care and will erase Selina’s criminal record, she realizes that she really has no other option. For her sister’s sake, and understanding that she likely won’t see Maggie ever again, Selina accepts Talia al Ghul’s offer.

I have long been a fan of the DC comics Catwoman character and have seen numerous origin stories describing how she started out and how she became one of the more recognized of Batman’s foes. Those seeking a book that follows the traditional DC comic book origin story for her probably won’t appreciate this one. While all the expected characters appear in the book, Catwoman’s origin story as told here is rather different than what one would expect, and it is certainly different than what is told in the various comic book versions.

Personally, I loved it. This book kept me so entranced that if there were any typos, I never noticed them. (Any book that can keep me that interested in just reading & not watching for errors is a rare thing these days.) Parts of this story even had me tearing up and wanting to cry. I am very glad that I picked it up. I will definitely be reading the other books that are out about the DC comic book characters and hoping they are just as amazing as this one. I strongly recommend reading it.

The story continues two years later when she returns to Gotham City with a plan. That plan is kept under wraps by the author until well in the book, and I refuse to tell or give spoilers. When the plan is finally revealed, readers realize that everything Catwoman has done had a specific purpose. In the exciting conclusion, it all comes together and I am left grinning like an idiot. *****

This was such a fun ride and I did not expect it to pack the punch it did. I am a big Sarah J. Maas fan and I was so looking forward to Catwoman to see a different side of her writing and I was not disappointed. She delivered an action packed anti-heroine story with a ton of heart and some romance to boot.

I absolutely LOVED Selina. She is so fierce and strong and smart and tough and she also has so much heart. At the base of it all her heart is what drives her. She is so easy to root for, even as she is robbing people left and right and causing general chaos. She is simply likable and at her core she’s a good person who just does bad things sometimes.

And then we had Ivy, who in a lot of ways stole the show. I truly loved her and loved the friendship that formed between Ivy and Selina. Forever a fan of strong and positive female friendships. Loved Harley too, she’s such a loose cannon and brought so much fun and crazy to the story. And of course I have to mention Luke, aka Batwing. Adored him as well. He is such a good guy and just wants to do right and do something meaningful. And of course I loved Selina and Luke together. It was fun watching them dance around one another and seeing how both sides of their personalities intertwined.

I feel like I need to mention though that I am not a comic book reader, it’s just not a medium I ever got into. But I love superheroes and villains as characters and I adore the genre when it comes to movies and other mediums. I mention this because if you are looking for a strict canon Catwoman, this probably isn’t the book for you. This is a new take on Catwoman, and I personally love her, but I recognize that those who are very attached to their version of Catwoman may not love this version. Personally I think the world has enough room for multiple versions and takes on classic characters, but I also get why some people don’t like to see their favorites messed with.

I loved these stories so much, that I wanted to name my only daughter, "Ayla", after the central character. However my husband was not a fan, so we compromised on Maya. This is one of my all time favorite book series, and I am a prolific reader so that is saying something! I was an anthropology major in college, and I find the way that she wove human discoveries, inventions, and herbal medicine - into the story of complex hierarchy and cultural relationships present in societies (small and larger groups of people) fascinating. This book takes you on hunting trips and the experience of learning new languages, falling in love and having your heart broken. Having a child, losing a child. Learn about the good in people and the bad. It teaches about respecting women and how different societies have different expectations on that front. Wonderful wonderful books <3

There are books which mark an entire era in your life, and this one (as well as the subsequent series) have definitely marked mine. As a parent and teacher, this is the kind of a book I would love young people to read, not only to fall in love with fantastic characters and historical fiction, but also to learn to imagine and visualize, in quite a life-like way, what it meant to live in a place and time with no electricity, no technology, no politics. Life stripped down to survival, emotions, learning and communication. Reading it, I went through a range of emotions from compassion, fear, awe, empathy, sadness, fury, frustration, admiration. It wasn't a question of when I would finish it. The only thing that mattered was how fast I could read the second part, what would happen and how they would grow. An epic adventure and lesson on the power of spirit and mind!
.....Jean Auel has created an entire world in which our cousins, The Neanderthals, have once again come alive. Their ancient world is primitive and wild, yet this vigorous breed of human survived and thrived for millennia in one of the harshest climates possible. Ms. Auel has written a fascinating story replete with interesting characters and sub-plots and filled with incredibly complex herb lore, survival techniques and the explanations of the intricacies of making clothes, tools and implements during the stone age. Her descriptions of long-extinct animals and plants will keep you turning the pages and marveling at the ingenuity of a species that lack our imaginations. She has definitely done her homework. I have seen reviews complaining about the pages "wasted" on these details, but I found them fascinating.
This is the first book in a 6 book series that tells the story of Ayla, a 5 year old orphan of OUR species, who is found by the traveling Neanderthal clan. She tries desperately to live within with the customs this ancient race and it is her story of trials, troubles, tenacity and triumph that makes this series unforgettable. It is necessary to read the books in order to understand the story and I'm sure that from the first, you will be as riveted as I was.
I read The Clan of the Cave Bear because it had received incredible reviews, yet it had been banned from so many schools. I decided I just had to discover the reason for this paradox and I did. There are graphic depictions of sexual activity and gory descriptions of hunting. I would not recommend this books for anyone under 14 years old.
The only (minor) complaint I have is that the version does not label the map to let you know that the story is taking place approximately 35,000-25,000 years ago. It does show the area where it takes place, the change in coastlines during the ice age and the routes taken by the clan as they traveled to the Clan gathering, the mammoth hunt, etc.
I know I'm decades behind in picking up this title, but I'm so glad that I did. In the first of Jean Auel's "Earth's Children" series, we get a first-person perspective into what it would be like to live as a Neanderthal person more than 25,000 years ago, and I was fascinated at every turn. Auel has created such a believable and historically viable story, that the reader can't help but fall into the lives of these people, who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear.

What I think I loved most about this story was the gender dynamics of the Clan. We get a glimpse into a society radically different from those of modern times and yet one that can also be strikingly familiar at times. In the Clan, women are second-class citizens they are submissive to the men, they depend on the men for leadership and guidance, and they are happy with their roles in life. In part, this dynamic is driven by the developmental limitations of the Neanderthal people -- individuals are incapable of free thought and everything they "know" how to do is genetically pre-programmed into their brains. Men are genetically the hunters and leaders with their stronger bodies and dominant minds. Women are genetically the gatherers, caregivers and mothers. These societal roles are immutable, with change being beyond the capacity of their brains to even comprehend.

The starkness of this dynamic is very well illustrated when Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl, comes to live with the Clan. Because her brain is wired differently from that of the Neanderthals who rescue and take her in, she constantly finds herself at odds with the Clan's way of life. She questions. She challenges. She desires independence. She struggles with the gender restrictions that the Clan has placed on her to the point of causing her great hardship in the early years of her life.

This hardship, and Ayla's perseverance through it, is also one of the spectacular aspects of this book. Ayla loses her birth parents at a very young age to a natural disaster. She is alone in an unfriendly wilderness as a toddler -- without shelter from the elements or wild animals, without food, without guidance or care. When she is discovered by the Clan, she must learn a new language and fit into a mold in the Clan's society for which she is not physically or mentally suited. She is constantly seen as ugly for her physical features that are unlike those of the Clan and she is constantly being chided for her boldness and independent way of thinking, despite her desperate attempts to fit in.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Ayla's story, much like the future of the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons, is not one with a happy ending. In spite of all of her struggle and hardship, she finds herself alone again at the end of the book, hardened and wizened, having lost her adoptive parents to death and having lost her son as well as the camaraderie of a people and culture due to her inability to completely submit to the Clan's way of life.
This book was such a fascinating and heart-wrenching experience for me; I am anxious to continue reading the series and hope to see Ayla rise above her hardship and thrive.

Or spending all your free time helping at an animal shelter. Or walking around building sites in jeans, sassy tee-shirts, and mud. But Madeleine McGuire isn't the typical First Daughter. She knows how to play the political game, and does it grudgingly, all while being her off-beat, big-hearted self.

Jake Simmon knows how to play the game, too. When your mother is the current VP, with sights set on becoming the next president, you have to walk the walk. As a wounded warrior, Jake is happy to give back to other veterans, but what he wasn't counting on was Maddie. Frenemies for as long as they can remember, Jake and Maddie have an edgy sort of relationship. Except, suddenly Jake is looking at Maddie with new eyes, and Maddie is seeing him in a different way, too, and, well, chemistry.

BEDMATES by author Nichole Chase is a sweet, heartwarming, and, yes, sexy read. Although I tend to steer clear of the NA trope these days, there is something refreshing about this one. Maddie is a bit of a wild child, having inherited her free spirit from her mom. Although she tries to toe the line, well, life happens. When Maddie and Jake are forced to work together to promote a housing program for veterans, they have to make nice for the cameras, and, soon enough, find that they're interested in spending more than just air time together.

Nichole has managed to capture the tenor of a life lived in the public eye, and what it must be like to always have to be 'on.' At the same time, she's written Jake, Maddie, their famous families, and the people that make Washington, D.C., what it is, in a way that makes them more likable and approachable.

I really enjoyed that the storyline involves current events, things that will resonate with many different types of people. The animal rights issues, the wounded warrior issues, the political games, all add up to make a book that I liked very much. I would happily recommend BEDMATES, and rate it 4 stars' worth of love, laughter, and steaminess, with the added bonus of political celebrity thrown into the mix. Definitely a nice addition to your TBR.

If you likes the suddenly royal series you will love this book. We get to visit with Alex and his quirky love able family as well as meeting a new family with very wonderful characters. Great book and I can't wait to see the next book in this family!
In a genre currently filled with repetitive storylines and cardboard cutout men, Bedmates is a fresh of breath air. Chase's characters are genuine, the story flows well, and the dialogue is realistic. There is normally a longer wait between her books than other authors in romance but the quality more than compensates !
I have been waiting for this novel for what seems like forever and Nichole so didn't disappoint me. It was such a wonderful story full of emotion, Heart warming yet heart wrenching at points. Full of characters you wish you could actually meet and we can't forget the romance and steamy sex!

I was happy Sam and Alex made the trip to the States. It always nice to check in with them.

It really is nice of Jake to look past things, “yeah. Girlfriend.” He tipped my chin back so he could look me in the eyes. “You’re a little mean to me, but that’s okay, because you’re effing awesome in bed.” I loved the playful banter between Maddie and Jake, "I reached down and smacked his ***. “Oh, yeah.” He chuckled. “You know what I like, baby.” I really loved this book, the characters were relatable, and down to earth.
The story was an interesting idea, but the writing wasn't stellar. The prose was somewhat repetitive, and there were typos and grammatical errors. There were also inaccuracies regarding White House protocols and Washington political life that could have been easily researched. The main characters' personalities changed from page to page and secondary characters seemed flat. I think the author could benefit from a better editor.
I was cautiously optimistic when I heard about this book, because I really loved The suddenly royal series and so I was excited but not sure what to expect I am happy to report it was a great book. It also dealt with some real topics that just added to the goodness in this book.
Maddie is the first daughter, she is very passionate about her causes, which has landed her in jail and community service
Jake is the VP son, he is dealing with his demons the best ways he can as well, and trying to work on a project that he's passionate about.
Maddie and Jake were great together, first Maddie, loved her character, always love strong heroines; she gave as good as she got. The real ness of Jakes character and the things that he was going through even as he and Maddie embarked on their relationship added another layer to the book. I'm glad I gave it a try.
Oh, my goodness!! I loved this book!!! So many emotions were running thru my head while reading but then the first time Maddie and Jake make love, I wanted a Jake!!!! He worshiped her body and she - his. They had grown up together and had to overcome so many problems. Or so they thought but nothing compared to what he had to work out himself. Maddie may have been the Presidents daughter but she didn't use it to get ahead. She was a hard worker, independent, strong willed but the most loving,patient person you could have on your side. When she felt like there was a cause for something she didn't stand down she fought. I felt so in touch with these characters and their story. It felt so real. I felt like the story line couldn't have been greater, the timing of events to happen. I also feel that this was about helping our veterans who have served our country by choice or draft that don't want to ask for help and don't want to be different but aren't sure how to adjust or deal with "normal life" after they are back. There needs to be more done for them and this book showed some of that. I can't say enough about this how good this book made me feel about providing homes for them and seeing that they need help and they suffer but try to hide everything.
When you're father is the president of the United States, people expect you to behave a certain way. Like, maybe not breaking into a lab to free test animals. Or spending all your free time helping at an animal shelter. Or walking around building sites in jeans, sassy tee-shirts, and mud. But Madeleine McGuire isn't the typical First Daughter. She knows how to play the political game, and does it grudgingly, all while being her off-beat, big-hearted self.

Jake Simmon knows how to play the game, too. When your mother is the current VP, with sights set on becoming the next president, you have to walk the walk. As a wounded warrior, Jake is happy to give back to other veterans, but what he wasn't counting on was Maddie. Frenemies for as long as they can remember, Jake and Maddie have an edgy sort of relationship. Except, suddenly Jake is looking at Maddie with new eyes, and Maddie is seeing him in a different way, too, and, well, chemistry.

BEDMATES by author Nichole Chase is a sweet, heartwarming, and, yes, sexy read. Although I tend to steer clear of the NA trope these days, there is something refreshing about this one. Maddie is a bit of a wild child, having inherited her free spirit from her mom. Although she tries to toe the line, well, life happens. When Maddie and Jake are forced to work together to promote a housing program for veterans, they have to make nice for the cameras, and, soon enough, find that they're interested in spending more than just air time together.

Nichole has managed to capture the tenor of a life lived in the public eye, and what it must be like to always have to be 'on.' At the same time, she's written Jake, Maddie, their famous families, and the people that make Washington, D.C., what it is, in a way that makes them more likable and approachable.

I really enjoyed that the storyline involves current events, things that will resonate with many different types of people. The animal rights issues, the wounded warrior issues, the political games, all add up to make a book that I liked very much. I would happily recommend BEDMATES, and rate it 4 stars' worth of love, laughter, and steaminess, with the added bonus of political celebrity thrown into the mix. Definitely a nice addition to your TBR.

THIS. BOOK. WAS. OUTSTANDING.

I could just leave it there, but where’s the fun in that? No joke, though. Furyborn was an amazing and exhilarating read, and it was so difficult to put this book down when I had to work or clean or do something else. I’d literally be cleaning, and either be staring at the book sitting on the kitchen table or thinking about the characters. That’s how addicting I found this book. Like Lisa Maxwell’s blurb says below, this book was utterly breathtaking and has left me impatiently waiting for the sequel.

Furyborn follows the path of two girls, both centuries apart, but somehow connected. There’s Rielle, who can manipulate all seven types of powers. And there’s Eliana, a girl set on finding her kidnapped mother and protecting her younger brother while getting caught in the middle of a centuries-old war (and did I mention she’s hiding something that could make her a valuable asset in the war?). Both these characters are fierce, strong, and undoubtedly charming. I loved reading both their stories and seeing each character progress as a person. Legrand did an incredible job bringing these two characters to life. I highly enjoyed reading Eliana’s story just slightly more than Rielle’s, mainly because I could relate to Eliana’s fierceness, her snarky and sarcastic replies, and her overall protection toward her family.

The world building was phenomenal. Claire did a wonderful job describing both parts of the world (one for Rielle and one for Eliana). There was not a single moment where I got lost in the world building or got bored; actually, there was never a dull moment in this book, in my opinion. There were tons of satisfying action scenes to keep the pace going and to keep the readers engaged. Though, I will admit, there were times where I secretly wanted to skip a character’s chapter just so I could continue the other character’s story. But I didn’t (now that I think about it, though, I might go back and re-read Furyborn, just to see what it’s like when you read each character’s story separately).

Overall, I was very impressed with Furyborn. I had high hopes and expectations for this book and I am happy to say that Furyborn did not let me down. The book exceeded my expectations in every possible way. I know the sequel does not come out until next year, but that does not mean I will stop wishing I had it in my hands at this very moment. Furyborn was one of my favorite fantasy reads of all time!

Furyborn The Empirium Trilogy Claire Legrand Books Reviews

I feel like I've been doused in cold water, because Furyborn by Clare Legrand is refreshing AF. I say "refreshing," because it's technically labeled as young adult, even thought it reads nothing like most of them. This is definitely my kind of YA book complicated and immersive word-building, major bad-assery, heady sexual tension, and a fantastic, intricate plot.

What I loved about Furyborn
1. First of all, this book has a world that is awesome, and truly difficult for me to describe. When I close my eyes, I think of the Ancient Greeks and Gotham City, of castles on steep cliffs and dilapidated towers scraping the sky. I can't even begin to piece this world together for you it's bizarre and wonderful and confusing and unique.

2. I loved both of our main characters Eliana and Rielle. A lot of people said that they found one or the other unlkeable. While I agree that they had their issues, I appreciated that they weren't perfect. They had well-crafted and nicely fleshed out personalities.

3. The sexual tension in this book was a big HELL YES and had me tearing through the book like I needed the wind from the turning pages to cool me off.

4. The magic in this world was fantastic, epic, and larger than life. I adored how it was described and how it was implemented in this story.

5. Sort of superficial, but I really appreciated the uniqueness of the names that Legrand had in this novel (other than Eliana, the rest of them were not names I've read over and over in fantasy novels).

What Furyborn wasn't 5 stars
1. I felt like Eliana's narrative was a little TOO action-packed and overall less interesting for me. Sometimes it got exhausting. (view spoiler)

2. There are A LOT of names and places to digest in this book. This is only a minor negative for me, because honestly, I don't feel like understanding the exact name and place of everyone/thing was that important for comprehension of this novel. But I do know that there were a number of complaints about this.

I would recommend this book to any fantasy lover. I think this book's hype is well-deserved and I'm excited to see it soar to the top of the NYT best-seller list, as I'm sure it's bound to do!

I just finished Follow Me Down and I'm very sorry it's over. I loved Mia, her snarky attitude and her way with words. I was rooting for her from the first page to the last page. She was a fully fleshed character and I so enjoyed being in her head for the whole of this book.

And I also liked getting to know the cast of characters who populated this story all of whom walked to the beat of a very eccentric drummer. From the drunk caretaker of the Terrace Apartments (the town's version of a skyscraper) to the Guidance Counselor Mia crushed on in high school to the Wilkes family, the local version of the landed gentry, everyone felt very real.

Sherri Smith has found a new fan who is already waiting eagerly for her next book because Follow Me Down is the real deal and it's very highly recommended!

Sherri Smith has written two historical novels, but her newest book, Follow Me Down, is a thriller. (And I have two copies to giveaway!)

Smith takes us to Wayouta, North Dakota. Mia and her twin brother Lucas could not wait to escape this small town, their drunken mother and the claustrophobic nature of everyone knowing you - and your business. Mia has made a life for herself in Chicago and works as a pharmacist. A pharmacist who tends to sample the product too much. Her brother went back though and works as a teacher at the local high school. Mia ends up back in Wayouta as well - but only after her brother is accused of killing the high school girl he was allegedly sleeping with. There's no way her brother could do such a thing....could he?

Smith has created one of those insular towns and filled it with people who happily jump on the bandwagon of popular theory. Lucas is guilty - they just need to find him. The police are sure that Mia knows where he is. Mia, for her part is just as determined to find him and prove his innocence. Wayouta is filled with a plethora of suspects, odd ducks, a dark underbelly and a questionable police department.

Mia is the narrator of the book, but she is distinctly unreliable."My face was splotchy; grass was in my hair. And I did look crazy. I did. For a full minute, I wondered if I was. If the pills had made my brain go runny and soft. That maybe I couldn't trust any of my own memories. That for me, reality was a multiple-choice questionnaire." Her tenacity and bullheadedness are appealing. And she has a wicked sense of humour. I quite liked her voice.

Relationships - especially those between a mother and child, play a large (and heartbreaking) part in the plotting. Sibling ties are also a focus of Follow Me Down.

I found Follow Me Down a bit slow to get started, but the story picked up speed after the initial characters were introduced and the time and place were set. Smith gives us lots of suspects and throws in some red herrings along the way. The final whodunit? Didn't see it coming! If I had to describe the feel of the book, I would say modern Gothic with a psychological twist.
I’m fully confident this will be one of the most talked about book of the Spring 2017 season, and why shouldn’t it be? It was a deliciously compulsive read, has an attention grabbing cover, and even the title hints at dragging us down the rabbit hole of deceit and despair alongside the characters. It’s almost as if it taunts the reader to come along for the ride, if you dare. Anyone who knows me well knows that I love dark and twisty psychological thrillers, yet it’s been really hard to find ones that tickle my fancy since the Gone Girl frenzy of the 2010’s. RIP unique and original books. While I cringe at even making this comparison, I must admit this book is the first in awhile to give me the same feeling I received when stumbling upon Gone Girl many years ago. The plot is entirely different; it had that dark feeling of spiraling down a funnel where you start out slow and steady on the wide brim and gain momentum as you draw closer to the grand finale. I love stories that are structured this way and think they are a staple in suspense fiction; while it seems mostly police procedurals are tailored this way, I found it refreshing to happen across the formatting in Follow Me Down without all the cumbersome details from the law enforcement side of things.

“The past was crammed down your throat everywhere you turned here; you could never escape it.”

The entire premise and plot surrounding this story is dark. The characters are unlikeable and there are copious amounts of drinking alongside the recreational use of prescription drugs. Without getting spoilery, there are dark subjects riddled throughout this book from just about every angle imaginable. My point is, many times I just can’t connect with a book that has so many unlikable and heavy aspects; most books that sound similar from the points mentioned above I have ended up not finishing due to the distracting nature of being bombarded with so many unpleasant details. Not so with this book! Even though she was flawed and highly irritating at times, I found myself cheering Mia on in the search for answers regarding her brother and poor Joanna. Smith infused just enough snarky attitude and dark humor into the narrative to lighten the mood where I could fully relax into this mid-western world that almost featured a noir-like atmosphere. I think Mia was purposefully written this way to give her flesh and bones, allowing her to come alive and walk alongside us instead of just sitting as another two-dimensional wilting flower we want to throw a book at. Maybe also a shoe. My point is, these characters are massively flawed and highly dysfunctional and all my dark tingly recesses LOVED IT.

“Mimi would go around, ice clinking in her glass, saying she was estranged from her family, drawing out the word “estranged” like it was a sophisticated, glittery term.”

I completely and unashamedly adored Mimi’s character! I know she was rotten and all kinds of screwed up (and clearly a full on narcissist as gleaned from above), but there’s something refreshing about a character who takes her issues and plays them up for the sheer drama of it all. While there is the overall big mystery surrounding the disappearance of Lucas, there were tiny nugget mysteries as well surrounding Mia’s mother, Mimi, and the question of who the twin’s father really is. I’ve always enjoyed novels that contain a family tree of secrets, so when this one revealed itself as such, in part, I became elated at the possibilities of the who’s, the why’s, and how it would pertain to the bigger picture. I really enjoyed how everything wrapped up in the end; the major questions were answered, but things were left a little messy in places and everything wasn’t magically fixed to perfection.

Again, I truly believe we’ll be hearing lots of buzz surrounding this debut throughout 2017. What more do you need besides an endorsement from both Chevy Stevens and Diane Chamberlain on the front cover? I’d highly recommend this to fans of the psychological thriller; this truly had the feel of a classic whodunnit while adding in fresh, modern, and unique traits to separate it from the traditional suspense novels that are being touted left and right. I want to emphasize that while there are twists and turns, the brilliance of this novel isn’t based on a single plot element; this was a well rounded read that is fully capable of standing on it’s own without being compared to other books or marketed as the next (fill in the blank). The cover only begins to touch at how haunting and disturbing of a read this was; you’ll want to go ahead and snag your copy to discuss with your friends so you aren’t the last one in on what a highly delectable book this was.
This was an amazing book and very well written. If you love mysteries, then this is a must read.

I was only reading this book to get to the end. The protagonist was pretty unlikable and the end was a crazy disappointment. 120 pages in and I still did not know anything new about the plot which made it a hard read.
A compelling novel in the same vein as "The Girl on the Train" with a protagonist attempting to piece together the events of a suspicious and unexpected murder. Fast paced with engaging characters that have you chastising them for decisions at certain points and commending them for their tenacity at other points. Love that this is a local author as well. Great job Sherri!

I can always count on Jennifer Crusie to give me a true break from everything. A bit old-fashioned in a sweet, rather than dated, way (though the love scenes are wonderfully steamy without ever being crude). Hard to put down, missed it whenever I wasn’t reading. Nice and long and full, with an incredibly satisfying ending, which still managed to make me want to pick up the next book right away (something I almost never do). Sophie and Phin are a wonderful pair, Phin is a to-die-for lover with tons of class and integrity yet he has his issues. Sophie is intelligent, hard-working, and such a good person, but she makes mistakes too. Their conflicts are totally believable. I never once shook my head or rolled my eyes. The rest of (quite large) cast is fully drawn and includes more than one additional romance. The mystery is a good one, including, you-guessed-it, more than one whodunit. Book heaven.

Welcome to Temptation Jennifer Crusie Books Reviews

I made the mistake of reading "Faking It" first. That one took so long to get into, that I was not sure I wanted to invest any time in "Welcome to Temptation," which intorduces readers to the Dempsey family. I am sure glad I decided to throw caution to the wind. I just loved this book! It is the story of two sisters who come to town to make a documentary, and end up unwittingly making a porno film and falling for upstanding pillars of the community.

The characters of Sophie and Phin are so well drawn out and sexy, that they jump from the page. There's also a lot of attention to detail for the secondary characters - they are all so well fleshed out. The initial "romantic" encounter between Sophie and Phin is the stuff that romance dramas thrive on, and I had misgivings at first (I thought I was reading a Harlequin romance novel), but then Crusie hooked me in with her inventive prose (and more inventive imagination). And she has a great knack for Dusty Springfield and goofy movie quotes (I found myself trying to guess the movie too!)

Crusie brings a mixture of romance, emotion, mystery and plotting to tell an engaging story of how two lost people manage to find each other in a storm of controversy. And let's face it, porn, pool, phallic symbols, and politics make for good storytelling.

I don't understand why Hollywood has not discovered her stories instead of churning out remake after remake of really bad television shows.
I discovered Jennifer Crusie books about 6 or 7 months ago.... and fell in love with her funny, nutty, zany, witty (and steamy) characters & scenario's.
I have now (purchased from ) read about 6 of her books... and so far, "Welcome to Temptation" is my favorite.

I have written "no spoilers" here .... (Just my 2 cents worth of my opinion about this book).

There are at least three chapters where I laughed so hard, I had tears in my eyes.
One in particular was so funny... I had to stop reading.... take off my glasses... wipe my eyes... while I continued to snort and giggle for nearly 3 minutes.

Other chapters, I had a lot of laughs and smiles. Jennifer Crusie also writes "great hot sex" chapters.... (which steamed-up my glasses).

I have read dozens of "funny romance" novels by other authors. But, Jennifer Crusie is my favorite.

Besides the great humor, and steamy sex... I love how she makes each character so unique from each other. (even secondary characters).
If you've never read one of Jennifer Crusie books... buy this one.
I am constantly amazed by Jennifer Crusie's writing talent. Although I have long known that she produces some of the greatest dialogue around - such as in "Bet Me," I wasn't yet aware of her range in characterization and plots. "Welcome to Temptation" reveals this talent thoroughly.
Sophie Dempsey is the eldest daughter in a family of "gypsies." As a child, her family made frequent moves and engaged in constant con jobs. Sophie is the one member of the Dempsey family that does not have a police record. As the eldest, she has spent a lifetime of sacrificing her needs to look after her siblings - Amy and Dave. They are a close family who believe that "family comes first."
When Amy gets her involved in filming a porn movie in Temptation, Sophie is divided. She has met the sexy new mayor, Phineas Tucker, but for the first time is torn between loyalties. When she meets his beguiling daughter, Dillie, Sophie doesn't stand a chance.
Like all small towns, Temptation is not one to easily embrace new comers. It is a town where gossip travels like the wind and tradition is to be carried on at all costs. However, Temptation has never met a woman like Sophie, a dichotomy of innocence and predator.
I loved Sophie's "Five-Step Program"
1. Make the Mark smile.
2. Get the Mark to agree with you.
3. Make the Mark feel superior.
4. Give the Mark something.
5. Get what you want and get out.
The characterizations in this book were magnificent. Rachel, Rob, Frank, Virginia, Liz, Leo, Wes, Amy, and Davy - they were just so well defined.
I loved the ending to this book with Sophie's thoughts on the political posters. It was just hilarious and hopeful and you truly got the sense that this could work....
OMG. I discovered Jennifer Crusie years ago and decided to listen to this audiobook, which I've had forever. I remembered vague plot points, but quickly became engrossed and obsessed with finding out the story all over again. I actually bought the version! Agh! Crusie has a way of describing the ludicrous and sometimes monotonous into something fascinating. I love the way she does her sex scenes. They're super realistic and raw.

I didn't know what to think of Phin in the beginning. He kind of came off as a pushover and I was thrown off because I didn't remember that he had a kid. I mean, who would want a guy who doesn't get emotional over anything?? But, of course, Phin ends up drool worthy and I laughed myself silly when she hustled him at pool. Very much looking forward to delving into her work again!
I can always count on Jennifer Crusie to give me a true break from everything. A bit old-fashioned in a sweet, rather than dated, way (though the love scenes are wonderfully steamy without ever being crude). Hard to put down, missed it whenever I wasn’t reading. Nice and long and full, with an incredibly satisfying ending, which still managed to make me want to pick up the next book right away (something I almost never do). Sophie and Phin are a wonderful pair, Phin is a to-die-for lover with tons of class and integrity yet he has his issues. Sophie is intelligent, hard-working, and such a good person, but she makes mistakes too. Their conflicts are totally believable. I never once shook my head or rolled my eyes. The rest of (quite large) cast is fully drawn and includes more than one additional romance. The mystery is a good one, including, you-guessed-it, more than one whodunit. Book heaven.

I can’t believe that I haven’t written a review of this one. That seems so foreign to me, especially since I just re-read it a little over a year ago. But, I guess that gives me time to write my review now.

I’m not sure I love it quite as much as my original thoughts below, but I do love this book still. Mercy and Adam are, as always, amazing. And we even get a couple of chapters from Adam’s point-of-view! He’s much calmer in his head than I might have expected, but Mercy gives a very good reason for that in this book, and it makes sense. I love Adam, completely.

There’s not a whole lot of a chance to figure out who the baddie is in this book until it’s revealed to you – and that’s probably my only complaint. I like to have the opportunity to determine what is going on, and who is calling the shots. Even if I never can figure it out (and there’ve been a few books out there that have thoroughly stumped me – I love those the best), being able to see the breadcrumbs on re-reads is a real pleasure for me.

I didn’t remember as much of this book as some of the previous books in the series, and that’s probably because this is only the third time I’ve read this book. Still, I didn’t see the clues I was hoping for throughout the story.

Even despite that, I love this book. The first obstacle (as Mercy calls it, her ‘triage’ of the situation) is fraught with suspense. I love this part of the book even though there’s a ton of worry in my head for all these characters that I love. And there’s a huge heartbreak that I can feel in my chest, still. The second, and in truth – real, obstacle is … scary. I can’t say more than that for fear of revealing any of the truth, but it scared the hell out of me. And scared me more that Mercy decided to fight that fight. She speaks the truth when she says that all that is required for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing, but she’s so damn vulnerable! I don’t like my heroines invulnerable, but I’d love it if Mercy could find some mithril armor or something.

Also, I loved all the geekish references throughout the book. They added some much-needed levity in very scary and wrenching moments.

This book is another excellent addition to the series, and I can’t wait to continue my re-read.

I have two minor complaints as a whole with this series:
1. Patricia Briggs ends the books REALLY abruptly. It’s not cliff-hanger-abruptly, usually, but I always feel like I could have used a couple extra pages of denouement to bring me down off the high of the climax.
2. In order for Mercy to fight the ‘big-bad’ at the end, Adam is ALWAYS taken out of commission somehow. Probably because he’s so much stronger, physically, and able to take on damn near anything. But after several books it just starts to … become noticeable.

Still – an great book in a series that I absolutely love.

As much as I enjoy the Mercy Thompson series as a whole, Frost Burned felt a bit...lacking to me. In the previous book, the supporting cast was almost completely absent, but the story was so rich and full of lore that it kept me interested. In this book, the cast is there, technically, but we don't get to see much of them or hear much from them. I was happy to see more from Tad and see his character take on more life, as well as learn a bit more about Zee. I hope both will appear more frequently, as they are two of the more interesting supporting characters. There is also a cameo from a member of the Marrok's pack that was a pleasant surprise and interesting to see from a different perspective than we see in the Alpha & Omega series.

The pacing of the book was strange to me as well. The action that occurs mid-book felt more climactic than the actual climax. After that, everything just felt off. The last half of the book felt more like a wrap-up until the second to last chapter. We also don't meet the Bad Guy until that second to last chapter, although we know there's someone pulling the strings throughout the whole book, so the end felt a bit unsatisfying. I didn't have time to hate the Bad Guy or really develop any kind of feeling at all toward him. It was just some flat character that needed to die. The very end of the book, after the action, was very weird. We get several chunks of about 3-4 paragraphs detailing what happens in the weeks that follow, and then all of a sudden we're back to right after the last fight. It seemed the author wanted to end on a particular scene, but she also wanted all this other information in there, and the flow was just all wrong. I would have rather had the bits of information about the following weeks at the beginning of the next book.

On a positive note, we do get to see Mercy grow in her abilities a bit more, which is something I hope continues. I don't want for her to gain ridiculous overpowered super abilities that was one of the downfalls of the Anita Blake series, but I have enjoyed learning more about what she is and what she can do that has built on the previous book.
