And the choice you have is immense. From the big names like Norton to free software like AVG. But one product that has quietly been making a name for itself is NOD32. Is this software as good as many people say? Here's our review.
The company behind NOD32 is ESET. This Slovakian company was formed in 1992 as an Internet security company and NOD 32 remains their flagship product.

The product has a number of claims to fame. First it is a very fast piece of software to use. It does not need much in the way of memory or CPU resources so it will not slow your machine down. Secondly it is very effective. It is the only piece of software that has never missed an 'in the wild' virus since 1998.

Using the software is very simple. Once configured, you can just leave it to do its thing quietly in the background. You will see periodic messages to let you know that the software has performed an update to detect the new viruses. This all happens without you having to get involved so there is no chance of you forgetting to update your software.

You also have access to an on demand scanner. I find this useful for checking every new file that comes onto my computer before I open it. This may be a file passed from a colleague or something that is downloaded from the Internet. The interface used to be one of the letdowns of this software but this has been improved with the new version 3.0.

You'll be glad to know that your email is also protected so you won't have to worry about malicious programs getting through. Still, it is good practice to be wary of any emails from people that you don't know especially if they have an attachment.
This is a very useful piece of software that is ideal for home and business users. Hot or Not? This one's definitely hot

This article will be a Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 Review. I spent the $40 bucks to get a copy not only to test it but what I thought was going to be my Virus Software for the year to come. I might have been counting my eggs before they were hatched if you know what i mean. I installed this program on my backup Dell laptop computer running Windows XP.

Just like all of the previous, non beta, releases of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, this version was very good at detecting malware and viruses of the sort. I would systematically go to websites I knew contained viruses or spyware and I would purposely let the computer get infected. I noted all the sites and in what order so that I could run comparison tests on other anti-virus softwares like AVG later on.

Once I finished installing Kapserky Anti-Virus 2009, which was not such an easy task. After installation it would tell me I had a conflict with another software that we all know as Norton. This software had not been on my computer in a very long time and not sure why it was still installed, probably something in the registry. Needless to say, a false alarm. It made me manually enter the product key that they emailed to me by hand, not the worst thing in the world but just very annoying. I am a big fan of the copy paste for these types of keys for various programs.

Moving on in the Kaspersky Anti-Virus review, lets discuss how it performed in the actual scanning for malware or viruses. I was pleased with the time it took to do a quick scan, but I was not pleased with how was notified of these results. I really was not notified of the results whether they were cleaned or sent to the vault. I later learned I had to click a very small button called "Reports" which would tell me all of that information. I would of liked to be notified on each removal of a piece of spyware, maybe one piece I wanted to keep, the point is I just like being in control and choosing what goes on my PC.

Like I said it did the normal full scans and quick scans rather quickly like the old versions of the software. It did remove all of the infections that was able to get while browsing lets say not G rated sites. So it did perform well in that regard.
In all it is a very solid working anti-virus software for most people. However it does need some work to its actual functionality and usability. Many computer users are not as technical savy as some others, and they need to remember this when they start to develop their next years software. After this Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 Review I will be doing a complete comparison to AVG Anti-Virus so we can know what to use in the new year

Read here to decide if Norton Internet Security Suite is just what you need or the last thing you need.

Features of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009:

- Antivirus
- Spyware protection
- Two-way firewall
- Identity protection
- Antiphishing
- Network security
- Botnet protection
- Rootkit detection
- Browser protection
- Internet worm protection
- Intrusion prevention
- OS and application protection
- Web site authentication
- Pulse updates
- NortonTM Insight
- SONARTM behavioral protection
- Antispam
- Parental Controls & confidential information blocking
- Norton Protection System

System Requirements:

- Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate**Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 Home/XP Pro/XP Media Center Edition300 MHz or faster processor
- 256 MB of RAM (*512 MB RAM required for the Recovery Tool)
- 200 MB of available hard disk space
- Standard Web browser
- Email scanning supported for POP3- and SMTP-compatible email clients.Support for AntiSpam feature Microsoft Outlook® 97 or later
- Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 or later
- Supported instant messaging clientsAOL®
- Yahoo!®
- Microsoft®
- Trillian™
- Browser support for Browser Defense and Phishing Protection featuresMicrosoft Internet Explorer® 6.0 (32-bit only) and later
- Mozilla Firefox® 2.0 and later

Awards for Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009:

- October 2008 PC Pro: PC Pro Recommended Award
- October 2008 Computer Shopper: Editors' Choice Award
- September 2008 PC Magazine: Editors' Choice Award
- July 2008 LAPTOP Magazine: Editors' Choice Award
- PC World 100 Best Products of 2008

Advantages of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009:

It has a high detection rate, as high as Kapersky, and higher than some other services.

It is incredibly easy to complete your purchase online, and quickly download, install and configure. Even those not computer literate can easily set up their preferences and the helpful tutorial starts up with your first use, teaching you how to use the features.

An amazing array of features! My personal favorites include: the identity theft protection, spyware, anti phishing, adware detection, web browsing and image protection, as well as the parental controls. Others may like the user name, password and credit card storing and protection.

Easy to read tool bars indicate that it is working in the background. There are easy to read, use and ignore "approval" of websites before you visit them. The identity theft protection utilizes not only the firewall, and spyware protection but also a storage system for log ins, passwords and credit card numbers eliminating the need to store them anywhere else and allows for ease of use.

The Price is Right:

It is reasonably priced at $69.99 or you can get the two year download for a discounted price of $114.99. This download is available for up to three computers in your home.

The Disadvantages of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009:

The most frustrating thing about the Symantec Norton Internet Security suite is that it drags my computer down. I type over 80 wpm, I have several windows and systems open at a time and need to be able to access these windows, systems and images quickly and easily, for both personal and professional use. This antivirus program makes the computer run so slow that I am sitting and waiting for access to what I need. Just opening my computer for the day with this system causes a delay of more or less than 6 minutes just to open my first window.

Customer support is only free if you use the telephone, and it is suggested to purchase the on-line support. I would prefer free customer support for the service, after all not everyone is born with a hard drive for a brain and this may keep some people from investing in a quality antivirus system.

The more I use Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 the less I like it, I have to walk away before I get mad at how long it takes to use certain systems on my computer. As long as my computer is open, and I only do one thing at a time, it runs slower, but not a complete stop. However, with more than one window open I consistently get a delay that is so long that I get a "not responding message" while I wait for everything to get in "sync."

The Maddening about Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009:

After weeks of the "bad" it gotten down right maddening. Since I can't have more than one application and browser window open, and my last attempt was for two hours, I uninstalled the system. The advantage don't outweigh the disadvantages for what I need. I want an all in one service package for more than one computer that doesn't limit my ability to work.

Bottom Line:

While Symantec Norton Internet Security Suite 2009 does what it says and is easy to use for scanning, other features are a little too confusing and the computer slow down would make it prohibitive for those who daily depend on their computer for many tasks including work. The fact that this slows it so much while "protecting me" was starting to feel like going through airport security and getting strip searched because my underwire bra is setting off the machine. I am told that's for my own good, but I don't want to do it either.

Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009 may be just right for computer users who are generally just surfing, shopping and using e-mail and want dependable anti-virus, phishing, spyware and identity theft protection.

Unmountable hard drive and data inaccessibility are the two major causes of concern for any computer user after the STOP error message appears. An ideal solution to overcome STOP error message is by restoring the data from an updated backup. However, if you have not maintained any backup or backup fails to restore the desired information, then you will need to opt for advanced Partition Recovery software.
As a practical instance, you run a program that runs NetBIOS functions. A NetBIOS function is primarily executes and interprets a specified network control block. The program runs for a long time and your system freezes or stops responding while the program still continues to run. After some more time, you encounter the below error message:

"STOP 0x00000041 MUST_SUCCEED_POOL_EMPTY (0x1000, 0x440, 0x2E, 0x1)" The four parameters in the above STOP error message vary due to system's configuration.

Parameter 1: The size of the request that could not be satisfied (0x1000) Parameter 2: The number of pages used of NonPaged pool (0x440) Parameter 3: The number of > PAGE_SIZE requests from nonpaged pool (0x2E) Parameter 4: The number of pages available (0x1)

After the above error message appears, all the hard drive data becomes inaccessible. Additionally, you encounter the same error message every time you attempt to boot your computer system.

Cause:

The above STOP error message primarily occurs because of a pool memory leak in the Netbios.sys driver.

Resolution:

To troubleshoot and resolve the above error message and access the data, you will need to follow the below measures: * Install the latest service pack 4 (SP4) for Windows 2000. * Apply the Hotfix solution provided by Microsoft. * Restart the computer system.

If you encounter the same error message even after applying the Hotfix solution, then you will need to perform a clean reinstall of Windows. A fresh reinstall of Windows will completely erase the data stored in the hard drive partition. To recover the data in such situations, you will need to use advanced partition recovery software. These File Recovery applications are built with interactive user interface that makes them easy to understand and implement.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a powerful and reliable file recovery application. The software provides recovery of lost data from corrupted, deleted, formatted or lost hard drive partitions. The read only utility supports 185 different file types that can be further extended. It is compatible with FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. The software supports Windows 7 (Currently in RC1), Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000.

It not only provides the only frame of reference between all devices, it is critical in everything from securing, planning and debugging a network to providing a time stamp for applications such as data acquisition or email.

Microsoft Windows XP has a time synchronisation utility built into the operating system called Windows Time (w32time.exe) which can be configured to operate as a network time server. It can be configured to both synchronise a network using the internal clock or an external time source.

For many applications, an internal clock can be quite adequate, although, on a network, problems can arise with applications such as sharing network files or in some environments even fraud, so it is vital for security reasons to use an accurate timing source for your network.

NTP (Network Time Protocol) is a protocol already installed on Windows XP and is used by Windows Time to keep machines synchronised to the single time source. There are several timing sources available on the Internet but Microsoft and others strongly recommend that you configure a time server with a hardware source rather than from the Internet where there is no authentication.

Specialist NTP servers are available that can receive a reliable time source via the GPS signal or specialist radio transmissions that get their time from atomic clocks.

If you wish to configure Windows XP to operate as a time server then first thing is to locate the Windows Time subkey. To do this: Run Regedit (Click start/run/then type REGEDIT/and click enter.

Note: editing your system registry can cause problems with your system. It is advisable to back up your system before editing the registry.

Now locate the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeparameters Right click the right-hand side and click Modify. In the Edit Value box, under Value Data, type NTP and then click OK. Now go to the Config folder and right-click AnnounceFlags, Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Value Data, type 5, and then click OK.

Locate this subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpClient

Right-click in the right-side window and Modify. Edit the DWORD value box and type the number of seconds you want for each poll under Value data, i.e.: 900 will equal 15 minutes. The poll field represents the polling interval between NTP poll packets.

To enable the NTP server locate the subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32TimeTimeProvidersNtpServer Right click enabled (in the right-hand window) then Modify. Edit the DWORD Value and type 1. Right-click NtpServer, then Modify and in the Edit DWORD Value under Value Data type Peers, then click OK.

Locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig In the right pane, right-click MaxPosPhaseCorrection, then Modify, in the Edit DWORD Value box, under Base, click Decimal, under Value Data, type a time in seconds such as 3600 (an hour) then click OK. This adjusts the connection settings.

Now go back and click: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Timeconfig

In the right pane, right-click MaxNegPhaseCorrection, then Modify. In the Edit DWORD box under base, click Decimal, under value data type the time in seconds you want to poll such as 3600 (an hour).

Exit Registry then restart windows time service by clicking Start/Run then typing: net stop w32time && net start w32time. on each computer, other than the domain controller, type: W32tm/resync/rediscover. The time server should be now up and running.

This feature is accessible from Control Panel in the User Accounts applet. To create a password reset disk, click on the user account and click "prevent a forgotten password". You will need one blank formatted floppy disk to complete the task. Keep the floppy disk in a safe place for use in case of a forgotten password.

Most computers running Windows XP do not have a password set for the hidden administrator account that is accessible only in safe mode. You can access safe mode by pressing the F8 key just after the first screen(sometimes know as the BIOS screen). Windows gives a list of options after the F8 key is pressed. Choose the "Safe Mode" option and press Enter. Log on the account called "administrator" and open control panel. Navigate to the user account applet and click on the user account with the forgotten password. Click "remove password" and the account will be password free. This only works when there is no password set on the hidden administrator account. This method works only in Windows XP. The hidden administrator account is not accessible via safe mode in Windows Vista.

Third party tools have been developed that help you reset your Windows password. My personal favorite is "Active @ Password Changer". The software finds the registry key that contains your passwords and gives you the option to remove the password from any user account. Moreover, the software works for almost every version of Windows out there both 32-bit and 64-bit. It has both DOS and Windows versions. I prefer the Windows version since it uses a simple graphical interface and it is a lot easier to use than the DOS version.

Other third party tools such as EBCD (Emergency Boot CD) and Spotmau Password Finder can also help recover or reset Windows Passwords. Active @ Password Changer is by far the simplest way to remove a forgotten password and there is no fear of losing data.
