Summer on the South Shore of Oahu

A trolley painted to look like a whale is packed with Japanese tourists as they extend their arms out of the side toward the ocean holding cameras. A family wearing matching Aloha shirts j-walks in front of the bus- the screeching sound of worn out brakes and the smell of burnt rubber, but everyone unscathed. A few cute girls in skimpy bikinis sip on tropical drinks with umbrellas in them, disinterested in the near fatal collision. Everyone’s attention is toward the ocean, where there is solid double overhead surf avalanching throughout a string of picture-perfect peaks as far as the eye can see. It’s summer on the South Shore of Oahu. The first solid South-SSW groundswell arrived during a time of limbo, where spring meets summer, as students crammed for finals with the waves on their mind, regurgitated their disposable knowledge, and flooded out of the hallways and into the ocean. Townies went from stoked to surfed out, back to stoked to surfed out, and over and over again. Workers recounted stories of deep barrels at bowls-which by the way, could’ve been better with more west in the swell- in the dawn sun over their big plate lunches, lunch breaks were personally extended for more time in the water, and the inviting scent of charcoal, salt and beer increased with the setting sun. When it was all said and done, the South Shore received 8 straight days of 6’+ waves (peaks of 10’ at select reefs) with reinforcement from 4 separate pules which hasn’t occurred in more than 40 years and favorable conditions according to Surf News Network. “A Hundred Miles To The End” // A Long Island Surf Film

Surfers are amazing creatures. No matter what life throws their way, surfers are characteristically unfazed by setbacks and they never give up. Long Island native John Beattie was a lifelong surfer up until 2007 when he suffered a stroke. Due to residual weakness in his arms and legs, Beattie had to retire his surfboard. Instead, he picked up his camera and began to document his irrevocable love for surfing. “As a way to remain connected to the sport I love so much I began filming others surfing,” Beattie said. “I decided that I wanted to give something back to the Long Island surfing community for all the good times and all the people I met and places I’ve been over the years.” From Long Beach (NY, not California) to Montauk, Beattie set out on a journey to recount all of his favorite surf spots, hence the film’s title, “A Hundred Miles To The End.” Beattie said, “I began a journey to visit as many of the spots I used to regularly surf at as I could and rediscover the people and the community that exits there today. I began filming and interviewing the surfers that I met along the way. Starting in Long Beach in the West and working my way East to Montauk.” The film will be debuting at the SMASH Surf Film Festival in July, and playing in select theaters. It will feature local surf heroes, such as Mikey DeTemple, Will Skudin, TJ Gumiela, Balaram Stack, Trip Patterson, Jesse James Jockel, Chris Tomlin, Alex Fawess and more. After filming for over two years, Beattie is in the final stages of production, but needs some help to complete the movie. He launched a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for DVDs, BluRay discs, posters, digital downloads and other promotional materials needed to make the film a success. Heather Brown Wins Verizon 4G for Hope

As a renowned surf artist, it’s no surprise that Heather Brown’s passion for nature and sustainability helped her win the $10,000 grand prize for the Verizon 4G For Hope competition on behalf of the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. As she stood on stage at The Republik in Honolulu, HI, Heather hugged the over-sized check and expressed her joy for winning the grand prize for a foundation she has been involved with since 2008 when she was one of the poster artists for the Kokua Festival. “I am so beyond stoked,” Heather said as she fought to contain her contagious smile. “It’s amazing and I know this money is going to a great cause and will teach the kids who are the future of our planet.” The Kokua Hawaii Foundation specializes in sustainability in Hawaii and engaging students in an outdoor learning environment that will help them be stewards of the planet. Natalie McKinney, Director of Program Development for the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, couldn’t e happier with the support and awareness Heather has helped raise throughout the years. “We’re so honored to have Heather’s support through a variety of different ways like her environmental initiatives she does through her art and products,” Natalie said. Although Heather won the grand prize, which was decided through an online vote, three other Hawaii celebrities “battled it out” for the past month with the overall goal of raising awareness for their respective causes. Each foundation was awarded $4,000. Kala Alexander, Vice President of the Mauli Ola Foundation, was in attendance on behalf of professional surfer Jamie O’Brien who couldn’t make the event. The Mauli Ola Foundation began as a group of surfers with the goal of introducing surfing as a natural treatment to people with cystic fibrosis. “I think Jamie chose Mauli Ola because basically he is Mauli Ola, he’s one of the first surfers that actually helped us do what we do,” Kala said. “We found that after we teach them how to surf, not only are they smiling more and having fun, they’re also more motivated to do their treatments.” Musician Jake Shimabukuro, regarded as one of the best ukulele players in the world, began the evening with a unique cover of George Harrison’s While my Guitar Gently Weeps. Shimabukuro accepted $4,000 on behalf of H.U.G.S, an organization that provides programs designed to improve the quality of life for families as they deal with the emotional and financial hardships of caring for a seriously ill child. Actress Kristina Anapau was also awarded $4,000 for Stand Up To Cancer, a charitable organization that encourages teamwork rather than competition to accelerate innovative research among the entire cancer community. As the four celebrities exchanged smiles, hugs and high fives on stage, it was clear they were representing causes bigger than themselves. The Verizon 4G4 Hope wasn’t “competition” as much as it was a collaboration to raise awareness for the more important things in life.
