Unlike the night before I was able to fall asleep on my own last night. I got about five hours of sleep. No word from the vet so I believe Rhett is still ok and am hoping I can bring him home today.

I woke iris early and am ready to start the day! I have work to do at home and for mom, then relax with friends this evening.

I think he is looking better. I was only able to sneak in a few peanut butter treats while the attendant wasn't looking, but I am crossing my fingers that Roo is better enough to come home with me tomorrow.

Iris and I kept him company this morning and he looks a little better. At least he is sitting up. He also tried to eat a little. He will stay at the hospital another night and hopefully be better tomorrow to come home. I will visit him later today - maybe bring a toy for him to snuggle with and some chicken broth with rice. He has been so strong. I'm a proud mom.

an update on RhettyRoo

Roo fell very ill this morning at 7 a.m. I took him to the vet and he started to vomit and involuntarily poop blood. He is still at the vet, where he will be monitored overnight. He was feeling fine last night and in a good, playful mood. Just this morning he looked sad and despondent.

I'm trying to keep it together since visiting the vet. The doctor told me that he might die. (Do they mean to scare us or just warn us just in case?) It makes me sad, but I know that RhettyRoo is strong and will try to fight this illness.

This is the period when the dead heartworms leave Roo's body, which can cause severe clots. It looks like this is the effect of the serious injection he received two weeks ago.

My friends and family have been really supportive today. I had lunch with my friend Jesse, have class in an hour, and will have dinner with Bret and Johanna to distract myself.

Iris is doing fine. She seemed a little concerned about Rhett this morning and I think she's wondering what happened to him...

I'll update this when I hear about Roo's progress. Please keep him in your prayers!

Pyramid Rock on Friday

the past week has been full of visitors that have come and now are gone. both Lena and Melissa were in town. i was able to see them a few times. Irene and family just left this morning, but i managed to see them quite a bit during their 3 week visit.

honestly, it's been a bit of a blur. i've been helping mom with year-end accounting. i finished my Heald classes and started my UH classes. i like my two new classes: one is writing intensive and the other focuses on rhetorics.

i've also been hanging out with a new friend, which has been fun.

there were south winds all weekend, so i went surfing on the eastside. i love it when that side is head high and glassy. :)

this week is a bit more mellow. no Heald, no visitors except for my friend Kelly who arrives today, less accounting for mom, and not too much UH work yet.

A new year with a new outlook

This will be a short entry, but 2012 started out pretty good in my book. I've been surfing a lot and now my back hurts. Will take it easy til Thursday I think.

I did really well in my classes last semester! I got my first A+ ever in food and culture and an A in globalization. I start my two new classes this week - am taking techniques in creative nonfiction and writing in globalization (focused on rhetorics). I'm excited about both!

For the next few months I'll be teaching 2-3 classes, so my workload will be about the same as last semester. Oh boy!

So we'll see how all this goes. :)

RhettyRoo has gone through his first round of treatments and seems okay -- a little less energetic. He will need a month of solid rest.

Irene and family are in town as well as a some friends visiting, so things have been good and busy. I need to do some work with mom now, so I'm off. More later!

AH YESSSS!!! a new year, a new day. i have a feeling 2012 will bring some good, dramatic changes. so, now i can think back and reflect on my last year and what resolutions and goals i set. here's my post from a year ago:

What to look forward to in the new year:

surfing - of course!

spending time with IRIS

an iPad: my parents' Christmas gift to me - but I'm waiting for the new version, which should come out in April

reading books: on my list - Sex Lives of Cannibals, Getting Stoned with Savages, Shadow of the Wind, Mercy, Three Cups of Tea, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Through a Glass Darkly, American Wife

reunions and weddings: Punahou #15, Colby #10, Jesse's wedding in Portland, Jason's wedding in Colombus

travel: more trips off island!; write for Viva in El Salvador (maybe!)

food: garden and new patio in progress!

so i definitely surfed (check!); spent a lot of time with IRIS and got her a new little brother Rhett (check!); my iPad is AWESOME (check!); i haven't read any of those books but they're still on my shelf - i'll hope to get to them this year; the reunions and weddings were attended except for Jason's in Columbus (check!); travelled to El Salv but didn't write for Viva (check minus); no food, but the patio had an upgrade complete with patio set and green Bermuda grass (check!)

this year I'm going to keep it simple:

finish reading those books (see above)
make the best decision possible for grad school
do well in grad school
write/journal at least once a week
make sure Iris stays healthy and active
bring Rhett back to full health and take him surfing at least once a month
travel abroad in the spring (for a week) and the summer (for a few weeks)

stoked for 2012! i have a good feeling about this year!

i think i got a cold for christmas! thanks a lot, santa. i was going to go surfing, but i think all my insides would come out in the water. instead, i'm going to read a book, have lunch and a movie with my parents, and then go to a christmas party with friends. not a bad way to celebrate! :)

WOW. i watched "I'm Still Here" a few months ago and was so disgusted by Joaquin's character. Now they're saying the whole film as a mockumentary and all of that stuff was contrived! BRILLIANT - yet troubling! Casey Affleck really got me.

Rhett's Heartworm Fund

It's almost my bedtime.

Hello-Woof! My name is Rhett Roo Yun. Rhett because that's what the Hawaiian Humane Society named me; Roo because my mommy thinks I look like a kangaroo when she takes out the leash to go for a walk (I get excited, what can I say); and Yun because Mommy officially adopted me a week ago. I'm so happy to have a warm, loving home! I also love my older sister Iris (the pug) and my other great friends, Bandit and Tubby.

I met Mommy in October because someone found me as a stray. She was only supposed to foster me for a week, but I guess she really liked me 'cause I'm still here and now part of the family! I'm a three-year-old dachshund mix and though I love to play I also love to give kisses and curl up for a nice nap. Everyone says I'm a good boy.

So I was diagnosed with heartworm disease, and don't know how long I've had it. It's a possibly fatal disease, but I don't let it get me down because it's treatable. My vet said that I have really high levels of it, so I'm taking antibiotics to weaken my system. On January 2nd, I'm going to have a pretty important injection at the vet, where I'll be kept overnight. Then, a month later, I'll go back in to get a final injection and be monitored overnight to pretty much cure my disease. Mommy is already committed to this intensive treatment, which costs $850. I guess she really loves me!

I feel really lucky to have a comfy home and a mom and sister that care about me and want to see me back to full health. Since it's the holiday season and all Mommy wants for Christmas is for me to be happy and healthy in the new year, she's hoping you all might be willing to contribute a little to my heartworm fund. Whatever you can chip in would be swell. If you're tight for cash, then some well-wishes would be great too, 'cause I'm not allowed to play too much now that I've started my treatment.
