Productivity Problems

It doesn't matter how many "Getting Things Done" or "7 Habits" books you read, follow and try the facts are the invasive mindset of the latest, youngest, and precious programmers will thwart you with their stupidity.
For example.. all I wanted to do was write a short blog concerning some OTHER issues in technology and browser capabilities. That's it. Log in. Write. Get out.

But instead I'm met with popups concerning the new 'dynamic view' of blah blah blah, and more trash pushed at me by these overpaid, pompous assholes. After closing it down three or four times, I finally decided.. screw it and move on. But.. that didn't really work either. It looks like after writing this I'm probably going to have to spend 30 minutes or more just looking around to see why I'm getting the message and how to stop it. That wasn't on my GTD list today, but it will have to be addressed.

The reason these programmers do this is simple. They haven't been able to make the connection between the number of hours spent on this kind of stuff for the users...and their income. All they know is that they are Google/Microsoft/Facebook/ whatever employees and their future is secure. At least they think it is. What they can't put their heads around is that while they are wasting the users time with these invasive tactics...their users productivity is being driven down. Since their users productivity is being effected, so is their users income. Because the users income is less, they won't be able to spend the money necessary to support these programmers products.

I'm no longer going to waste my breathe/life trying to explain this. If you don't get it..so what. My plans are to take the steps to protect myself from them, ie: dropping services from companies that insist on these tactics.

Change JomSocial Latest Groups Background

Project: Change the Latest Groups background color on a JomSocial website?

Description: If you install JomSocial on the Rocket Theme Panacea - you will get an issue with the color and size of the fonts in the 'Latest Groups" area on the right hand side of the FrontPage when logged into JomSocial. You will have white fonts on a white background, which makes it impossible to read.
I'm sure there are many fixes for this… however this is my solution.

Disclaimer: One of the things we presume in this example is that you have FTP access via an FTP application, or via some sort of explorer application your hosting company provides you via a GUI. If none of the previous sentence makes any sense to you, then you probably shouldn't be trying to do this anyway, so please consider hiring a professional to do this for you. Project Goals: Create a step by step explanation of how to manage the colors and sizes of the fonts in the 'Latest Groups" area of a JomSocial installation. Even though this example is for Rocket Theme's Panacea template, the files you would change on any installation would remain the same.

Step by Step

In order to accomplish this you will have to change the code for the display of Latest groups in two files. You have to change the components\com_community\templates\blueface\css\style.css and the \components\com_community\templates\blueface\frontpage.latestgroups.php files . Make copies of those files and put them in a place where you know you can get to them if you need them
First we are going to add a background color to the text area by opening the style.css file…find the code below around line 613. You will need to add the 'background:#eceff5;' to the file. When you're finished, it should look like the area below.

Now go to somewhere around line 27 and look for the line that says <h2 class="title"> and change it to say "<h4> (removing the class tag). Then go to the line that says </h2> and change it to <./h4> . Basically that area should look like the area below when you've finished.

Now save both files and upload them to your server… over writing the ones that are there.
That's it.. It may not be the way a hard coder would do it… but it does work, and as far as I know it doesn't break anything. If you have a better way, please share.

Removing Spyware/Malware and Viruses is a tricky business. The people that write the stuff have criminal, devious minds…and this is reflected in the way that they attack your machine. You will notice that I didn't say 'smart'. Most of the stuff that they do is actually very simple, but the results can wreck your day, week, month. In the beginning there was really no reason for them to do these kinds of things. All that has changed in the last few years.

With the popularity, easy access, and total obliviousness to reality that the Internet has brought us… these deviants can now attack your wallet from the comfort of their mom's basement. All they have to do is write a virus… then charge the unsuspecting victim to remove it. It's called Ransomware. What it means is that your machine is held for ransom, until you pay them for their removal process.

Don't ask who would pay for their services. Plenty of people pay them or else they wouldn't engage in this type of activity.

At any rate… here are my notes on a few things you can do to remove Antispyware from your machine. Each version is a little different, so some of these may not work on your actual installation. If none of this works, then contact me through the comment section of this post and I'll provide you with other options.

Check for any files in windows/system32/drivers with 0KB file size and delete them.
- The way I do this is to boot the PC using a PE disc, use the command line to browse to the system32 directory… then run 'dir' and physically look for a file with a 0KB size…then delete it using the del command. If you have a better way, please let me know.
If that doesn't work...You can try the following method.
- 1. Insert you're windows installation disk.
- 2. Type R in XP installation disk or select recovery mode in vista installation disc
- 3. Select command prompt
- 4. Type this command -->
  cd %windir%
  sfc /scannow
(this will scan your registry and Windows will attempt to fix any corrupt files by extracting them from your original CD)
If it's attempting to scan every three seconds… then copy the below into a text file…save it to your desktop as 'fix.reg'… double click it…and hope it stops the scanning.

About /robots.txt
In a nutshell
Web site owners use the /robots.txt file to give instructions about their site to web robots; this is called The Robots Exclusion Protocol.
It works likes this: a robot wants to vists a Web site URL, say http://www.example.com/welcome.html. Before it does so, it firsts checks for http://www.example.com/robots.txt, and finds:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
The "User-agent: *" means this section applies to all robots. The "Disallow: /" tells the robot that it should not visit any pages on the site.
There are two important considerations when using /robots.txt:

robots can ignore your /robots.txt. Especially malware robots that scan the web for security vulnerabilities, and email address harvesters used by spammers will pay no attention.
the /robots.txt file is a publicly available file. Anyone can see what sections of your server you don't want robots to use.

So don't try to use /robots.txt to hide information.

How to create a /robots.txt file
Where to put it
The short answer: in the top-level directory of your web server.
The longer answer:
When a robot looks for the "/robots.txt" file for URL, it strips the path component from the URL (everything from the first single slash), and puts "/robots.txt" in its place.
For example, for "http://www.example.com/shop/index.html, it will remove the "/shop/index.html", and replace it with "/robots.txt", and will end up with "http://www.example.com/robots.txt".
So, as a web site owner you need to put it in the right place on your web server for that resulting URL to work. Usually that is the same place where you put your web site's main "index.html" welcome page. Where exactly that is, and how to put the file there, depends on your web server software.
Remember to use all lower case for the filename: "robots.txt", not "Robots.TXT.

What to put in it
The "/robots.txt" file is a text file, with one or more records. Usually contains a single record looking like this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /~joe/
In this example, three directories are excluded.
Note that you need a separate "Disallow" line for every URL prefix you want to exclude -- you cannot say "Disallow: /cgi-bin/ /tmp/" on a single line. Also, you may not have blank lines in a record, as they are used to delimit multiple records.
Note also that globbing and regular expression are not supported in either the User-agent or Disallow lines. The '*' in the User-agent field is a special value meaning "any robot". Specifically, you cannot have lines like "User-agent: *bot*", "Disallow: /tmp/*" or "Disallow: *.gif".
What you want to exclude depends on your server. Everything not explicitly disallowed is considered fair game to retrieve. Here follow some examples:
To exclude all robots from the entire server

This is currently a bit awkward, as there is no "Allow" field. The easy way is to put all files to be disallowed into a separate directory, say "stuff", and leave the one file in the level above this directory:

Alternatively you can explicitly disallow all disallowed pages:

Why am I receiving the message "This Phone Belongs To" when I power up my phone?

This message is part of a third party application called Antivirus Free.
When you power up your phone it will display:
This phone belongs to
protected by antivirus
You do not have the ability to disable this feature within the app, however you can add your name.
To add your name:

From the applications menu, touch antivirus
Touch Menu
Touch Settings
Touch Remote Management
Touch Lost Message
Touch Text before to change "This phone belongs to"
Touch Contact Information to select a contact. (This is the name and number that will display)
Touch Text after to change "protected by antivirus"

The only way to remove this from the screen is to uninstall the application.
To uninstall:

From the applications menu, touch Market
Touch Menu
Touch Downloads
Touch antivirus free
Touch uninstall
Follow the on-screen prompts to uninstall.

Removing Internet Explorer 9

Title: How do I remove Internet Explorer 9?

While logging into a website, I got a message that my 'browser was too old'. I was a little miffed, and confused because I was running IE8 and didn't think that qualified as 'old'. At any rate, I made the mistake of installing IE9. Here's what I did to remove it.

Content: IE9 is currently a pre-release software and you may need to remove it to get back to a production environment. However, when they try to uninstall through add/remove programs, IE9 is not in the program list but listed under Installed Updates.
You can remove IE9 Beta using the following steps.

1. Close all programs.

2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

3. Click Uninstall a Program under the Programs category

4. In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.

5. In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 9.

6. In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes.

Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

7. Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 9.

8. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

9. After you restart your computer, open Internet Explorer.

10. Click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. If Internet Explorer 7 or 8 appears in the About Internet Explorerdialog box, then you have successfully completed the uninstall.

Pros:

There was plenty of information in this webinar for people looking for a blogging platform.
The process that they use for creating blogs is very well structured. It's similar to what I do.. Except they actually practice it.

Cons:

Their surveys were confusing and didn't match what the narrator said they were talking about. Yes…they were close, but they sometimes referred to numbers that didn't match what the survey was actually about. At least that was my take on them.
For example: The numbers of blogs posts per month and the number of customers they got from the posts was sort of 'mashed' together and used to prove two points that were really unrelated to the polls.

Summary: This was as informative webinar with plenty of information concerning starting a blog. It may have 'been there'…but I didn't find enough 'how to' meat in the webinar. That could be because I'm not really a newbie in the arena, and was looking for something a little different. I was looking for some 'wow' factors. About the only 'wow' factor I got was 'WOW… I do it very much the same way this guy does…and he's rich!"
If you're pretty new at the concept of blogging, and you're looking for a good webinar to watch at your own pace and take notes….this is one that you'll probably enjoy.
It simply wasn't my cup of tea.

Title: Word Can Not publish this Post - Solved

It always happens when I'm in a hurry. I spend my 10 minutes in the morning following/creating various posts to different blogs that I post info to. After spending 10 minutes to create the blog entry in OneNote (I use OneNote because of the link to the online tools) I was ready to right click and "blog this'. When you publish this way, OneNote sends it to Word, and you use the Blog Tab to manage/publish your entries. I like it. It's easy. And it works. ALL of the time…no problems in over three years. But this morning.… something went wrong. I couldn't publish… and I had no time to figure it out.

I Googled for a solution, planning on fixing it pronto.. And moving on. But that wasn't to be. I wound up spending about an hour on it, trying all the solutions I found.. But nothing worked.

There are over 15 blogs in my MS Account Manager, so I didn't REALLY want to do it… but all of the solutions kept leading to 'you have too many categories, blah blah blah' in your blog. Well, needless to say that wasn't the problem.

After thinking about it for a few days, I remembered that I had added a secondary email address to my Google Profile. For some reason I decided I would remove that secondary email address and try again.

Problem solved. So… if you have the message " Word Can not publish this post" and you have a secondary email address on your Google Profile…. Remove it.

Hopefully it will fix your issue too.

On the other hand, sometimes devices can be too small, and I am kind of starting to think that this is a case in point. For example, I really want some sort of battery level indicator. Is the device 90% charged or ten minutes away from being completely dead? It'd be nice to know.

There are two indicator lights on the mifi 2200: the button light (which is how you turn the device on and off) and the status light on the edge, adjacent to the micro-USB connector.

Each of these can have multiple different colors, as shown in this handy table:

LED Color	Meaning
LED not lit	No Power
LED BLUE - Solid	Device is Powered on and Roaming
LED GREEN - Solid	Device is powered on and fully charged
LED GREEN - Glowing	Device is in hibernate
LED RED - Blinking	Battery is Critically Low.
LED AMBER - Solid	Battery is Charging
LED AMBER - Blinking	Error, see Troubleshooting

Got it? Four colors, flashing or not flashing, they could actually have eight messages, so Verizon showed a bit of restraint, right? :-)

Now, the status light can also have a couple of messages for you:

Quickbooks Online Connection Problems

So you're trying to login to your Quickbooks Onine, using TimeTracker to sync your client, product, and services lists, as well as upload your TimeTracker file. And what happens?? You get greeted with some message about not being able to connect.. .-214blahblahblah Failed to Connect yada yada yada.

If you turn on verbose logging (don't bother with this yet)… then you will find something in the log that says:

<SignonDesktopRs statusCode="2020" statusSeverity="ERROR" statusMessage="Session Authentication required">

I searched for it on the Internet and found the following information from other ISV:

This error message means that you have login security turned on in QuickBooks Online Edition. Login Security prohibits automated access to QuickBooksOnline Edition programatically. If you want to be able to access QuickBooks Online Edition programatically, you have to turn this off.

To do this, you can:

Log in to your QuickBooks Online Edition account
Go to 'My Account'
Click on 'Connection List'
Choose the appropriate connection and click the 'Edit' button
For programmatic access to QuickBooks Online Edition, this option must be chosen: "Login Security: No. Anyone who can run {your application name here} can use the connection."
If it is not selected, select it.
If it is un-selectable, you must create a new connection to your application, making sure to turn off login security when creating the connection.
- When I tried this, I still couldn't connect. So Gary at RFCons kept looking for a solution…and this is what he found.
- Remove the registry value: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Intuit\QBOEQBXMLRP\<your application name>\ConnTkt
- If you don't know how to do this, I'm not sure you should be trying it. You can always 'contact me' and I can connect to your machine and do it for you. For less than $50 you can be back up and running!

Project: Google Accounts

Description: Why do we setup Google/Gmail accounts?

Project Goals: To clear up any questions on what we are trying to achieve by setting up Gmail accounts for customers. It's clear that there is some confusion about why the customers even need it, since they have email accounts that they can use. Why would anyone want to add another email address they would have to check, when it's hard enough to keep up with the ones they already have.

It's because of the services that Gmail offers… for free. It's not possible to compete with these services, so we might as well take advantage of them. Plus, these services also help the users participate in promoting their business, collaborating with partners, and have fun while doing it.

It is not possible to give all the benefits (SEO, SEF, Profiles, Blogs, etc) of what comes with the creation of the accounts… so we will narrow it down to ten things(services) that we are going to use the accounts for.

Please read them carefully, do the research where necessary, ask questions when you need to, and take tutorials/lessons if necessary. The worse thing you can do is give a client misinformation about what the overall goals are with the services we provide. Our only goal is to provide services that help them promote their businesses and increase their services to their current clients. In other words… the same thing we are doing for them.

10 Services and some of their benefits

'Google Account" …not to be confused with Google Apps. Their Google account is what will allow them to use the other services. If it is ENABLED on their website…this Google account can be used to login to the websites that we build for them. This means they only need one username and password for all the services.
Google Profile - This is where they can control who sees what information about them on Google. If they just setup stuff without learning how to handle their profile, then they are basically leaving it in the hands of others. They will upload their avatar, put in their website info, company information, and other services from here. It is important that they learn what this is, and how to use it. It is part of their Google Account.
Gmail - an email application that allows them to send and receive email. The amount of space, as well as the ease of setting up phone services is one of the main attractions to the Gmail account.
Google Analytics - Google Analytics shows you how people found their site, how they explored it, and how they can enhance their visitor experience. With this information, they can improve their website return on investment, increase conversions, and make their site more visible and therefore more effective. We set this up on every site, but most of them don't do anything but read the reports. We give them 'permissions' to view it by providing access to their Google Account.
Google Calendar - This is where they can share their calendar with others… sync with it on their blackberry's as well as Outlook on their desktop. It is tied to their Google Account.
Google Blogger - want to know how they can add content to their site without having to teach them new tricks? This is the answer. Using blogger, they can use their current word processor to write their website content..and post it to a blog… which then shows up on their site. We use all sorts of things such as Feedburner, RSS Feeds, and DNS to make it happen. If they want to know how we make that happen, we have a course I am designing. It will not be a free course, and is not included in what we do.
Picasa - This is an easy way to share, organize and publish pictures to the web. The thing they must understand first, is that Picasa is not the same thing as Picasa Web Albums. Picasa is used to take the images off of their camera and store them to their computer. It is an image storage and management application. They use Picasa to publish pictures to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, blogs, and Picasa Web Albums. They use their Google ACCOUNT to do this.
Picasa Web Albums is the online publication tool where they can share their images. We are going to focus on how they can share them with US. How they share them with others is something they can get assistance with, on an individual support basis. This is why we must setup a Picasa Album for all clients under the Admin@salestrainingandnetworking.com Google Account. (Not to be confused with the Admin@salestrainingandnetworking.com Google APPS account.) If we set the account up under THEIR Picasa account, then we become responsible (in their minds) of helping to manage that account… when in fact, the only account WE need is the PICASA WEB ALBUM created for them under our account. We provide them access, as well as maintain those images.
Google Docs - This is a way for them to be able to upload and share documents (not images) with people that they are collaborating with. It works much the same as Picasa Web Albums, except it is for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings. Think of it as being a 'Microsoft Office" online.
1. Documents = Microsoft Word - a word processor
2. Spreadsheets = Microsoft Excel
3. Presentations = Microsoft Power Point
4. Drawings = Microsoft Draw ( no longer supported) it is a DRAWING program, that allows collaboration between people with the correct permissions.
All of the above is tied to their Google Profile.
IGoogle - This is basically the home page for where they can control what they see, what they keep up with, and general navigation of their Google services. It is tied to their Google Profile.

One of the most powerful things that the Google Account brings to them, is that they can access ALL of the above from ANYwhere in the world. They do not have to be on any specific computer, network, or device in order to use these services.

The other thing to take note of is that there is a lot of ground to cover with these apps. In order to cover these apps, we need to make sure that we have customers that understand a few basic principles.

We can't cover all of this in one day, much less an hour. The time spent showing them these skills are taken from the allocated hours that they have on a monthly basis… there fore they are not 'free'. If they should decide that they do not want to learn these skills… they are free to pass. However, they will be charged for any tasks that we have to perform for them, because of their inability to perform them on their own.
They are free to learn, explore, and create stuff using the Google account on their own. We only support those items that are integrated into the overall services that we perform for them. A good guage of what that means is to ask the question 'is this business related?" If it isn't, then it's definitely not covered.

Other Notes : Some of the things that we are going to cover include "Webmaster Tools, KNOL, Maps, Checkout, Alerts, Friend Connect, Orkut, Page Creator, Notebook, Notes, Sites, Google Voice, Google Talk, Web History, Wave, YouTube and more. ALL of them use the Google Accounts we have been discussing….

Removing Spyware

Don't ask who would pay for their services. Plenty of people pay them or else they wouldn't engage in this type of activity.

Check for any files in windows/system32/drivers with 0KB file size and delete them.
- The way I do this is to boot the PC using a PE disc, use the command line to browse to the system32 directory… then run 'dir' and physically look for a file with a 0KB size…then delete it using the del command. If you have a better way, please let me know.
If that doesn't work...You can try the following method.
- 1. Insert you're windows installation disk.
- 2. Type R in XP installation disk or select recovery mode in vista installation disc
- 3. Select command prompt
- 4. Type this command -->
  cd %windir%
  
  sfc /scannow
(this will scan your registry and Windows will attempt to fix any corrupt files by extracting them from your original CD)
If it's attempting to scan every three seconds… then copy the below into a text file…save it to your desktop as 'fix.reg'… double click it…and hope it stops the scanning.

Project: I have a client who can't retrieve email. The message they are getting is "An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Their.ISP.domain.com', Server: 'their.isp.domain.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C0133

Description: This is usually caused by a corrupted inbox. They get corrupted more than most people realize. It is easy to fix, IF you can still access it from within OE.. And IF you KNOW what you're doing. If you don't know..then contact us, and we can fix it remotely for about $50. If not… then follow the steps below

Project Goals: Get email account up and running again… by replacing the inbox and fixing the conditions causing the Error Number 0x800C0133 issue.

10 Steps/Points:

Run Outlook Express
Create a folder in Outlook Express - call it whatever you want.. It doesn't matter.
Move all the email from your inbox into the folder you just created.
Go to <Tools/Options/Maintenance/Storefolder> to find out where your inbox is located.
Close OE and go to the folder you just found in Step 4
Copy the Inbox.dbt file..and the inbox.bak file to another folder .. Just for safekeeping.
After they have finished copying… rename the file inbox.dbx to inbox.old, and rename inbox.bak to inbox.bak.old
Close Windows Explorer
Run Outlook express and check your mail.
Everything should work find now.

Basically your inbox got corrupted, and you needed a new one. When you changed the filename, Outlook Express figured you wanted another one, and it created it automatically for you.

Project: Google App Bake Off

Description: To create some sort of evaluation method for all the applications being thrown at the market today. The seem to be like viruses in that they appear to self replicate, and have a tendency to crash a lot. :-) I don't see as much planning going into these applications, and I don't see much customer service. From my viewpoint, it appears to be all about 'first to market' rather than the stability and value of the solution the application provides.

What I'm interested in is creating a framework using stable online applications to test, evaluate, and rate these applications. In order to do that there must be a 'standard' created to allow for fairness for all the applications.

If you're wondering what the benefit of being part of this project, then consider this. There are certain 'core' applications that must be implemented in order to manage this project. This in itself presents a few challenges as well as opportunities. For example, are you good at Picasa? What about all the mapping portions of Picasa? Have you pulled in your contacts in a way that you can use them to create Google Maps of your clients, and possible have them in your Google Voice or Wave contact list?

The point is all of these applications require expertise that very few people can master ALL of them. Yeah, you might be good at it.. But good doesn't seem to be good enough in today's market. You need to excel.

So, why not put together a team of people…all working towards one goal…and each focusing on their strong points? Have that team focus on using Google Apps to manage collaborative projects that they wouldn't be able to pickup, or handle as individuals.

Project Goals: Create a site to test, evaluate, and rate the various applications, as well as provide opportunities for individuals to increase their knowledge in their selected applications.

Suggested Steps:

Define the core applications that warrant individual focus. Those that I have defined so far are:
1. Adsense, analytics, Checkout, Gmail, Friend Connect, Maps, Page Creator, Talk, Webmaster tools, Adwords, Blogger, Docs, Groups, Knol, Picasa, Sites, Voice, Calendar, FeedBurner, Affiliate programs, Health, Local Business Center, Orkut, and Profiles. There are more, but this is a good start.
Find interested, creative, self-motivated people to help create the site, environment, and methods.
Setup the collaborative, protected site (or application) using Google Apps to allow for the collaboration between those involved.
1. Use Google's deployment checklist to create this environment.
Setup the method by which ALL contributors can easily participate in the project.
Create the framework/requirements for selecting more participants.
Setup an external site for posting results
1. This includes rss feeds and other techniques to create the site content.
2. Take a look at sites like Mashup, HolyKaw, Squidoo and others to glean ideas.
3. Use Google Doc Forms to collect the data, subscriptions, and feedback.
Use the site itself for a demo/test model of the applications.
Document as much detail as possible concerning the process and create SME's along the way.
Sell the concept
Retire to the Bahamas

Ok… maybe the last two steps were tongue in cheek. At any rate, I'm interested in USING ManyMoon, SocialWok, Wave, Voice, and the other applications in this project.

My Cell Phone Got Wet! What should I do?

So you dropped your cell phone in the water. Or you put it in the washing machine. Or maybe it fell out of your pocket in a snowball fight and it stayted there over night. It really doesn't matter how it happened... the facts are:

It got wet.
It doesn't work.
You don't know what to do.

Well... nobody really does. I mean, maybe there are some geeks out there who's entire existence is to experiement and figure out what to do if your bubble gum loses it's flavor on the bedpost every night...but I don't know any of them. So let's just do the basic stuff to see if we can get your phone working again. I do just about everything in '10's:... so let's narrow this down to the top ten things you can do.

Get it out of the water as soon as possible. Even on the most airtight phone, you have about 20 seconds before the insides get wet. If it talkes longer than that, then try to remove the battery while it is still under water. There's a technical reason for this, having to do with conductivity and heat... but what's the use of explaining it. Just do it.
Panic does no good. If you get to it in time, and follow instructions, you have a 75% chance of your phone still working. .
Remove the battery. Don't think about it, just do it. Electricity and water do not play well when it comes to circuitry. Cutting power to your phone is a 'have to'.
Remove your SIM card. Alot of your contact info is on those cards.
Do your best to dry the phone. Shake it out without dropping it, then use a towel or paper towel (ideally trying not to clog the wet paper in the gaps and grooves of the phone) to gently remove as much of the remaining water as possible. It may make you feel stupid... but if you can make big circular motions with your arms... that will help force some of the water out.
Remove any covers and external connectors, so that water can drain from those as well.
Use a vacuum cleaner if possible. Do not use a hair dryer. Vacuums will suck the water out... blow dryers push it back in.
Leave the phone in a bowl or bag of uncooked rice overnight. This should draw the water out. If you have something like "BHEESTIE Bag™" "DRY-ALL" "Damp Rid" or "Dry Right"...even better
Set the phone on absorbent towels, napkin, or other paper. If there's still water there after about 4 hours... repeat steps 7 and 8.
Put the battery back in and test it after you have waited a day or two. If your phone does not work, try plugging it into its charger without the battery, if this works, you need a new battery. If not, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it, sometimes they can't. Don't try to hide the fact that it has been wet. There are internal indicators that prove moisture.

Fix Windows BSOD after Feb. 9th, 2010 Updates. (stops at mup.sys)

After Feb 9th updates, an XP machine may BSOD (blue screen of death) on restart. If you try to start in Safe Mode, the machine quits at mup.sys.
To repair... Follow these steps:

Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console (instructions are here : Microsoft) Once you are in the Repair Screen..
Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB978262$/spuninst
Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt
Type this command: systemroot
Repeat steps 2 - 4 for each of the following updates

KB977165
KB975560
KB977914

When complete, type this command: exit
Restart the machine.. should start fine.
If auto updates are enabled... diable them and 'download only'... so you can disable those updates.
You 'could' do the updates one by one to determine which one caused the BSOD. On my client's machine... it was KB977165

Simply pour two cups of CLUB SODA (carbonated water) directly in the center of a fire ant mound. The carbon dioxide in the water is heavier than air and displaces the oxygen which suffocates the queen and the other ants. The whole colony will be dead within about two days.
Besides eliminating the ants, club soda leaves no poisonous residue, does not contaminate the ground water, and does not indiscriminately kill other insects. It is not harmful to your pets, soaks into the ground. Each mound must be treated individually and a one liter bottle of club soda will kill 2 to 3 mounds.

Dr. Krauthammer is on Fox News. He is an M.D. and a lawyer and is paralyzed from the neck down. A friend went to hear Charles Krauthammer. He listened with 25 others in a closed room. What he says here, is NOT 2nd-hand but 1st. The ramifications are staggering for us, our children and their children.
Last Monday was a profound evening, Dr. Charles Krauthammer spoke to the Center for the American Experiment. He is a brilliant intellectual, seasoned & articulate. He is forthright and careful in his analysis, and never resorts to emotions or personal insults. He is NOT a fear monger nor an extremist in his comments and views. He is a fiscal conservative, and has received a Pulitzer Prize for writing. He is a frequent contributor to Fox News and writes weekly for the Washington Post.
The entire room was held spellbound during his talk. I have summarized his comments, as we are living in uncharted waters economically and internationally.
Even 2 Dems at my table agreed with everything he said!
Summary of his comments:
1. Mr. Obama is a very intellectual, charming individual. He is not to be underestimated. He is a cool customer who doesn't show his emotions. It's very hard to know what's behind the mask. The taking down of the Clinton dynasty was an amazing accomplishment. The Clintons still do not understand what hit them. Obama was in the perfect place at the perfect time.
2. Obama has political skills comparable to Reagan and Clinton. He has a way of making you think he's on your side, agreeing with your position, while doing the opposite. Pay no attention to what he SAYS; rather, watch what he DOES!
3. Obama has a ruthless quest for power. He did not come to Washington to make something out of himself, but rather to change everything, including dismantling capitalism. He can't be straightforward on his ambitions, as the public would not go along. He has a heavy hand, and wants to level the playing field with income redistribution and punishment to the achievers of society. He would like to model the USA to Great Britain or Canada .
4. His three main goals are to control ENERGY, PUBLIC EDUCATION, and NATIONAL HEALTHCARE by the Federal government. He doesn't care about the auto or financial services industries, but got them as an early bonus. The cap and trade will add costs to everything and stifle growth. Paying for FREE college education is his goal. Most scary is his healthcare program, because if you make it FREE and add 46,000,000 people to a Medicare-type single-payer system, the costs will go through the roof. The only way to control costs is with massive RATIONING of services, like in Canada . God forbid!
5. He has surrounded himself with mostly far-left academic types. No one around him has ever even run a candy store. But they are going to try and run the auto, financial, banking and other industries. This obviously can't work in the long run. Obama is not a socialist; rather he's a far-left secular progressive bent on nothing short of revolution. He ran as a moderate, but will govern from the hard left. Again, watch what he does, not what he says.
6. Obama doesn't really see himself as President of the United States , but more as a ruler over the world. He sees himself above it all, trying to orchestrate & coordinate various countries and their agendas. He sees moral equivalency in all cultures. His apology tour in Germany and England was a prime example of how he sees America , as an imperialist nation that has been arrogant, rather than a great noble nation that has at times made errors. This is the first President ever who has chastised our allies and appeased our enemies!
7. He is now handing out goodies. He hopes that the bill (and pain) will not come due until after he is reelected in 2012. He would like to blame all problems on Bush from the past, and hopefully his successor in the future. He has a huge ego, and Dr. Krauthammer believes he is a narcissist.
8. Republicans are in the wilderness for a while, but will emerge strong. Republicans are pining for another Reagan, but there will never be another like him. Krauthammer believes Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty & Bobby Jindahl (except for his terrible speech in February) are the future of the party. Newt Gingrich is brilliant, but has baggage. Sarah Palin is sincere and intelligent, but needs to really be seriously boning up on facts and info if she is to be a serious candidate in the future. We need to return to the party of lower taxes, smaller government, personal responsibility, strong national defense, and state's rights.
9. The current level of spending is irresponsible and outrageous. We are spending trillions that we don't have. This could lead to hyperinflation, depression or worse. No country has ever spent themselves into prosperity. The media is giving Obama, Reid and Pelosi a pass because they love their agenda. But eventually the bill will come due and people will realize the huge bailouts didn't work, nor will thestimulus package. These were trillion-dollar payoffs to Obama's allies, unions and the Congress to placate the left, so he can get support for #4 above.
10. The election was over in mid-September when Lehman brothers failed, fear and panic swept in, we had an unpopular President, and the war was grinding on indefinitely without a clear outcome. The people are in pain, and the mantra of change caused people to act emotionally. Any Dem would have won this election; it was surprising it was as close as it was.
11. In 2012, if the unemployment rate is over 10%, Republicans will be swept back into power. If it's under 8%, the Dems continue to roll. If it's between 8-10%, it will be a dogfight. It will all be about the economy. I hope this gets you really thinking about what's happening in Washington and Congress. There is a left-wing revolution going on, according to Krauthammer, and he encourages us to keep the faith and join the loyal resistance. The work will be hard, but we're right on most issues and can reclaim our country, before it's far too late.

Crock Pot Cube Steak and Gravy Recipe

I found a recipe that was sorta/kinda like this one, but apparently it was written by a woman, and it had things about recipes that women care about, but that make no sense to men. There were all sorts of measurements in it.. 1 lb this, 1 can that... cook this long, simmer for WHATEVER. Anyway... there were just too many dang instructions for a real man to follow.
So.. I modified it and wrote it up so a real man can cook it, use real men terms, and measure it in ways that make sense to men. So if you're the kind of man who wants to know how you cook cube steak in a crock pot without worrying about whether your stockings were going to choke off your air supply... here it is.

Things you're going to put in it:

Some cube steaks you bought and froze because they were on sale and cheap.
Some mushroom soup that your girlfriend/wife bought to make something else with.
Some water. Not that fancy kind from a bottle... .you can get it from the tap.
those little cubes of powder beef. Beef bull-onions or something like that.
Some onions. If they have tops growing out of them... just cut that off. They are still good.
Pepper and Garlic Salt

Directions

Wash the cubed steak and put it in a bowl. Plastic, tin, ceramic... it don't matter. It's just a bowl.
Pour the mushroom soup in the bottom of the crock pot. Then fill up the can with water and swoosh it around, or use a spoon to get that stuff on the side of the can, then pour it into the crock pot.
Sprinkle some garlic salt and pepper on the cubed steaks that are on the top in the bowl, and put the steaks with the side you seasoned face down on the bottom of the crock pot and on top of the mushroom souip.
Sprinkle the cubed steaks in the crock pot with garlic salt and pepper then put sliced onion on top of them. You want the onions in there so that the steaks won't stick together while they are cooking. As an added bonus, you can use onion breath on Billy Bob to get him to leave after dinner.
Repeat steps 4 - 6 until you have all the cubed steaks in the Crock pot.
Wash some carrots and put them on top of the whole getup.
Set the crock pot on high and go do something important for an little while. A few suggestions are:

Go hit some balls at the driving range.
Surf the Internet for the phrase "Watch this!"
Clean your gun(s).
Watch your kids cut the grass, wash the car, clean the garage or anything else you need them to do.
Talk to your wife or girlfriend about stuff they like. That way you won't have to do it during the game or during Star Trek, Die Hard, Terminator, or the Matrix.
Or you can just watch a game on tv, and move to step 8 at half time.

Reduce to low and cook for a while. There's really not a time set in stone for this because, the meat is pretty much cooked after the first hour. It's all a matter of taste and stuff after that. Do you want to be able to cut it with a fork (requires four quarters of football) or do you prefer a knife? (you can eat it at halftime)
Put it on a plate and eat it.
Put the crock pot in the sink so your girlfriend/wife can clean it. After all...you talked to her for an hour earlier in the day...can't she help out a little bit?

Notes: You don't have to use garlic salt and pepper. You can put barbeque sauce and beer in it if you want to. Salsa, chili pepper and cayenne if you want. It won't matter. If you let it cook long enough, the smell gets all over your house, and nobody will complain about it anyway.

Sugar Coated Pecans - Sugared Pecan Recipe

"Pecans are coated with brown sugar and egg white batter, then baked. Scroll down to see more pecan snack recipes.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
1 egg white
1 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 to 3 cups pecan halves
Preparation:
Beat egg white until foamy; slowly beat in the brown sugar mixed with flour. Add salt and vanilla flavoring, then fold in pecans. Transfer pecans to a greased baking pan and bake at 250° for about 45 minutes"
