Long Beach Lawn to Garden Tour

Next Saturday, May 19th, Surfrider Foundation-Long Beach Chapter will be tabling at the home of Chelsea Mosher & Joshua Frank(526 E. 8th St.) as part of the Long Beach Water Department’s Garden Tour of L2G Homes. This is one of the homes where we have helped to create an Ocean Friendly Garden. Anyone interested in helping with tabling, please contact me. The event is 10am-2pm.

Chapter General Election June 2012

This year’s chapter general election will be held on June 6, Wednesday, 7pm at Beachwood BBQ (210 E 3rd St., downtown Long Beach). There are 4 open positions in the executive committee (EC). We really need your help and want new blood in the group. Joining the EC is a great way to get actively involved in Surfrider and your community. Here are the qualifications to be a nominee for an EC member for the 2012-2014 term:

Must be a current Surfrider member.
Must have participated in at least 3 Surfrider events in the past year, one of which was a Long Beach Chapter EC meeting. This requirement is so that you know what you’re getting into.
Must be available to participate in the EC meetings, held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7PM in Long Beach.

If you want to join the Long Beach Chapter Executive Committee, send your name to Emiko by June 1. To simplify the paperwork on our end, there will be no last minute write-ins on the ballot. For Surfrider members, we will have food and drinks so come by to vote, and mingle with the fellow Surfrider members!

Ocean Friendly Gardens G.A.P. Work Days at Becky & Jose’s

Members of the Surfrider Foundation~Long Beach Chapter and other friends & neighbors joined together to assist with the transformation of a grass yard into a garden of native, drought tolerant plants. Utilizing the principles of CPR, this garden will Conserve water by Preventing run-off and Retaining water in the planted area. Anyone in the LB area interested in assistance with converting their yard can contact the Chapter at ofg@lbsurfrider.org. Watch the video below and you can see more images here.

Join Us for a Garden Assistance Party Workday!

Learn by doing, turning a typical lawn into an Ocean Friendly Garden (OFG)! We will be removing any remaining turf grass the host missed, contouring the yard to create plant beds, adjusting the irrigation system, plus installing native and climate-appropriate plants. Lite food and drinks will be provided.

Date: March 3 (prep day) and March 10 (planting day), 9 am-1 pm
Location: 2126 Cedar Ave, Long Beach
Bring: Re-usable cup, sunscreen, and gloves.

Looking to get involved in the Surfrider activities? This is a perfect place to learn about the chapter’s programs so that you can start helping us with public outreach! Our focus this year is:
- to receive federal funding for the Long Beach Breakwater Feasibility Study (“Sink the Breakwater, Bring Back the Waves” campaign)
- to support the State Senate Bill 568, banning styrofoam carry-out containers from restaurants (“Rise Above Plastics”)
- to expand the Ocean Friendly Gardens program

Currently, California legislators are addressing another prevalent form of plastic pollution – Polystyrene Food Containers – with a bill introduced by Senator Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach. This bill would prohibit a food vendor or restaurant, on or after January 1, 2013, from dispensing prepared food to a customer in a polystyrene foam container (aka Styrofoam™).

This meeting is free to the public.

The Long Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will hold a presentation about what Surfrider is and the ongoing efforts to Sink the Breakwater. This will be followed by a screening of the new movie “Know Your H2O,” about our water cycle.

Surfrider Long Beach Preaches AND Teaches CPR

Not the kind of CPR you were expecting though. In an effort to reduce harmful runoff from the land, into the ocean The Surfrider Foundation designed a global program called Ocean Friendly Gardens. The Long Beach Chapter, with the assistance of Paul Herzog, OFG Program Coordinator, has transformed several gardens in the city based on the principals of CPR, Conservation, Permeability and Retention and here’s the latest evidence of what happened when volunteers, city officials and Surfrider worked together on Josh and Chelseas garden .
Did you know that urban runoff is often the primary source of ocean pollution? Did you know there are ways to combat this runoff and make our oceans healthy again? It’s one way you can make a difference so grab your friends and neighbors and start transforming YOUR neighborhood.
Breathing life back into our oceans and waves, one garden at a time!

2011 Volunteer Party

On December 4th over thirty Long Beach Surfrider volunteers gathered to celebrate their efforts to make their community a better place. Emiko Innes, Chairperson of the Chapter welcomed everyone with a slide show of the years activities and an inspirational clip from the recent TED conference which puncuated the importance of ‘movements’. Nancy Hastings, Southern California Field Organizer for the Surfrider Global said a few words of thanks after which awards were given, stories were shared and great food was enjoyed.

Huge thanks to The Local Spot at Pacific Coast Highway and Loynes for hosting the event. They are a local family with a local eatery and it was a perfect example of the community coming together for a common cause….through local efforts great global movements are born. Please consider The Local Spot as your first stop for great food and don’t forget to tell them that Surfrider sent ya!
