I currently have a server with Surpass. I can't really justify the cost at this time and was pondering moving to a level 2 vps (about a $45 / mo savings). I would actually get more memory with the VPS but with perhaps a little more limited resources - but at this time, I don't have any high usage sites. Question: I have two sites I would need moved to the VPS. I assume I pick a new domain name to initiate the vps service and then after the sites are moved, I change the DNS name on the sites I currently have to reflect the vps DNS - right? Is there a way to keep the server name I have now? My main site is simplycomp.com and my current server is srv.simplycomp.com

Website Issues

Hello all, I...

Hello all, I recently decided to undergo an update to my site. I have made some fairly major changes and I would appreciate any feedback you might be able to give me. A few specific issues that I am aware of, and would love to have some help with:

1. For the the div on the left titled Latest Event Photos, I would like this to automatically expand the main content div, such that this div is fully inside the content div. What is the best way to do this?

2. I cannot get the nav bar at the top to be the proper width. I would like it to be the width of the content div and the header image, but currently in IE9 it runs over, and in chrome it is too short. FF leaves it just right.

3. Color Scheme: Does anyone have suggestions for the color of the little overlay on the left of the homepage and the guestbook entries. I have played around with Adobe's Kuler tool, but I can't find anything that looks quite right with the bgcolor.

4. I have contemplated doing a random image for the header ie. the text would be the same but the image would change. Is this a cool idea, or will it make the site look disjointed?

5. Finally, my current structure has all of the sub pages in folders in the root of my site (ie brennanu.com/goodguys09). This clutters up my root directory a little. Would it be better to move all of these to some subfolders (brennanu.com/goodguysnats/goodguys09) to make it more organized? Will this mess up my search engine listings (Not that they are great in the first place)?

Thanks everyone! Any or all suggestions or comments are very much appreciated.
To that end, pet owners are typically inclined to take pride in tending to the never-ending needs of their furry companions. As the years have gone by, advancements in technology have become the norm, and practically every aspect of today has been touched by some form of technological encroachment. Pets are no exception. Microchips, similar to the ones that some consumers may find in their trusty iPods or reliable Kindles, can also be found in several household animals. Although they do have their practical purposes, some individuals wonder whether or not these chips are beneficial or detrimental to health of their pets. Let’s weigh the odds, shall we?

ticket 359771 -...

ticket 359771 - entire vps down. everything. I got a response saying the node was 'recovering from a short disturbance' however my client (the only one on the vps) reports 3 hours of no email. My ticket says the vps's are restarting now, and that they should be online 'within the hour'. If not, let them know.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but 'wait an hour and try again' isn't exactly something that I can get away with telling my client when they've been down for all this time. Nor do I have any sort of concrete reason why we're having the problem.

the ticket sounds like you guys are working on it, but I don't have anything to go on, and i'm going to really have issues if i have to wait an hour (which we're 25 mins into) and then it's still not up.

Can I get some more concise info and a real timeline? Something I can actually tell a client without looking stupid. I love surpass, but I hate it when stuff happens like this (although it happens very rarely so that's a plus)

When it comes to cellular phones, this gem of wisdom certainly holds true. Once upon a time, being able to send and receive text messages was the big thing. Later, video messaging was the norm. Flip phones became sliders and Razors were replaced with Androids. Needless to say, a revolution was on the horizon. After the smart phone boom, individuals started to embrace the next major technological craze...apps, nifty software applications that have essentially changed the way some of us entertain ourselves and conduct business. The fact of the matter is that apps are booming, and practically everyone with a smart phone or tablet has downloaded the software.

Today, while I was...

Today, while I was out doing my grocery shopping, a spam-bot attacked an older (legacy, disused) website on my account. I was suspended for this, and urged to upgrade because I had "outgrown shared hosting".

I have responded to the ticket opened about this, explaining the source of the issue and my willingness to simply take down the legacy website. Unfortunatly, this incident has also suspended (and put up a very unprofessional looking message) in place of my professional, work website. Even worse, I have been waiting all afternoon for a response that I simply have no received

It is not acceptable that a company that only offers ticketed service leave what I can only assume is a 24-7 service (given that no hours are listed anywhere) leaves a person hanging for hours waiting for a response to a high sensitivity issue. Given that the wording of the suspension notice makes it impossible to continue hosting my business with surpass. I can't have an automated attack for which I was not the origin end up posting messages for half a day that imply I didn't pay my bill. (I suggest rewording the message to not include the words "suspended" or "billing", just in case it's a situation beyond the control of the Admin).

I'm actively exploring my opinions to leave surpass because of this sub-par response. Surpass needs to get its act together quick or continue to loose customers over things like this.

I worked from home for six years before migrating my way back into a nine-to-five position. I’m happy to report that the shine of the corporate world hasn’t worn off and I enjoy getting up and heading downtown every weekday. How is this possible, you ask? Easy. Working from home, as glorious as it seems, can really make you crazy.

Megaupload and Piracy

Ok, so many of you...

Ok, so many of you probably know about the deal with Megaupload. If not, basically what happened is that the guys who run the site got charged with piracy, and the site has been confiscated and shut down by the DOJ. This is of course because people uploaded copyrighted material to the site.

Here's my problem with this....

The guys who run the site are the ones who got in trouble for it, not the people who uploaded the material in the first place. Essentially this means that I should be able to go to a competitors website and dump all kinds of pirated junk on their site, and poof...they are not only shut down but the owners are arrested as well. Meanwhile, I run off to do the same to another site I don't like. That makes no sense to me.

Something that makes less sense to me is that Youtube is still in existence. If Megaupload can go down, Youtube should have been gone a long time ago. People dump all kinds of stuff they don't own the rights to on that site all the time, yet it's still around and thriving.

A couple years ago, TVShack suffered the same fate. I thought this was a little ridiculous because TVShack didn't actually host any pirated material. They linked to video sites--TONS of video sites with TONS of material. So the DOJ knocks them out. That was beyond dumb. They basically said "Ok, we have a map of tons of illegal material that we can go after...so let's set it on fire."

But back to my original point. They went after the wrong people. It's not Megaupload who should have been held responsible. It's the content uploaders who should have and should always be the ones held responsible. The way this is rolling now means that if I wanted to, I could go upload a few copyrighted movies and TV shows to ANY website and get it shut down. And why the hell is Youtube still around if this is the case?

So yeah...thoughts?

I'm running a website that is growing by the day in website hits. I'm wanting to plan for the future and was wondering what the best plan would be. I'm currently using the Power plan, for $7/mo. However; I have been experiencing a slow load on my website.
I was wondering if it would be better to go with the Developer plan because it is on a low population server. Or if there is an option out there somewhere to have my website put on a lower population server?
