We have now gained access to the Inspec Archive which features: fully searchable electronic access to over 837,700 records covering 70 years of international scientific literature from 1898; tables, graphs and figures from the original source document in many cases; the original value-added indexing and classifications; enhancements in the form of the nearest equivalent current Inspec Thesaurus Terms and Inspec Classification Codes; longer abstracts, varying in length from half a page to several pages and including diagrams and complex mathematical proofs.
To access go to: http://www.engineeringvillage.com/search/quick.url
The Inspec Archive, the fully searchable electronic backfile to the Inspec Database, is far more usable, flexible, durable and more readily available than the 176 volumes (and over 140000 pages) of the printed Science Abstracts Journals. It is now easier to locate references to historic research or engineering breakthroughs from hundreds of scientists and engineers such as Albert Einstein, Guglielmo Marconi, Max Planck, Ernest Rutherford and Marie Curie.
Not only does the Archive give access to the work of famous scientists, it also gives access to the often forgotten works (sometimes known as “sleeping beauties”) that may be of use in assessing the validity of current patents. An idea suggested decades ago that did not develop then, may be of relevance today.
The Archive is being used by contemporary researchers because it is rich in the early research for some of today’s current ‘hot’ topics, including frugal innovation, fuel cells, regenerative braking, energy harvesting and wireless power transfer.

The next phase of the Library redevelopment project begins summer 2013 with refurbishment of Levels 4 and 5 of the old Library building – Level 5 work taking place this summer and Level 4 in summer 2014.
Externally work also begins soon to clad the old building in line with the look of the new Learning Centre. This is not just cosmetic but will also help to keep out the leaks and cold!

New Level 5 facilities

There are some great new facilities planned for Level 5, building on the successful learning spaces which are so popular with students in the Learning Centre and providing some dedicated training and networking facilities for PGRs:
• A new silent study room (similar to the one in the Learning Centre), to provide insulated silent study space
• Additional computers in the open plan areas with new, modern furniture
• Flexible and dedicated PGR training room to support the extended researcher training programme
• An informal collaborative space for researchers to meet and network with other researchers across campus

We look forward to welcoming you to this much improved space in the Autumn, and to bear with us during some unavoidable noise and disruption in the summer. We will be providing regular updates about when noisy work is planned and Level 5 stock relocations, but if you have any particular concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).
