The Vogue Archive contains the entire run of Vogue magazine (US edition), from the first issue in 1892 to the current month, reproduced in high-resolution color page images. Every page, advertisement, cover and fold-out has been included, with rich indexing enabling you to find images by garment type, designer and brand names. The Vogue Archive preserves the work of the world’s greatest fashion designers, stylists and photographers and is a unique record of American and international fashion, culture and society from the dawn of the modern era to the present day.

Reference Manager 12 – no longer available after 27 November 2013

Reference Manager is a software package which allows you to store bibliographic references, to insert citations as you write a document, and to generate a bibliography.

As from, 27 November 2013 Reference Manager 12 will not be available to download from the University of Surrey Software Portal.

Users are advised to back up their data and move it to another bibliographic reference software platform such as RefWorks or Endnote.

This helpsheet explains how to backup your Reference Manager data and import it into RefWorks.

New edition of Cite Them Right Harvard Referencing Guide

The new 9th edition of Cite them right the Harvard referencing guide by Pears and Shields is now available in the library and online. The online version of the book is available both on and off campus and is easy to search.

The main changes are how to reference eBooks and ejournals which is now much simpler.

Links to the online book, as well as updated examples, can be found on the Referencing page of the Library website http://www.surrey.ac.uk/library/subject/bibref/index.htm or via the Library catalogue.

Students using the previous Harvard referencing style on a continuous piece of work e.g. dissertation can continue to do so.

Advance warning – noisy building work outside the Library from Monday 17 June

Work to clad the outside of the old Library building, to improve temperature control and air circulation, begins in earnest on Monday 17 June and we are expecting some particularly noisy construction work in the first 2-3 weeks. This noisy work may affect you if you are planning to use the Library between 17 June – 5 July – worse affected areas will be outside the old Library building. Library staff will be on hand if you need help finding a quieter place to study but if you have any concerns about using the Library over this period please contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

Library building improvements for Autumn 2013

The next phase of the Library redevelopment project begins summer 2013 with refurbishment of Levels 4 and 5 of the old Library building – Level 5 work taking place this summer and Level 4 in summer 2014.
Externally work also begins soon to clad the old building in line with the look of the new Learning Centre. This is not just cosmetic but will also help to keep out the leaks and cold!

New Level 5 facilities

There are some great new facilities planned for Level 5, building on the successful learning spaces which are so popular with students in the Learning Centre and providing some dedicated training and networking facilities for PGRs:
• A new silent study room (similar to the one in the Learning Centre), to provide insulated silent study space
• Additional computers in the open plan areas with new, modern furniture
• Flexible and dedicated PGR training room to support the extended researcher training programme
• An informal collaborative space for researchers to meet and network with other researchers across campus

We look forward to welcoming you to this much improved space in the Autumn, and to bear with us during some unavoidable noise and disruption in the summer. We will be providing regular updates about when noisy work is planned and Level 5 stock relocations, but if you have any particular concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

ProQuest Historical Newspapers™ is the definitive newspaper digital archive offering full-text and full-image articles for significant newspapers dating back to the 18th Century. For the trial we have access to:

– Boston Globe (1872-1981)
– Chicago Tribune (1849-1989)
– Los Angeles Times (1881-1989)
– New York Tribune / Herald Tribune (1841-1962)
– The New York Times (1851-2009) with Index (1851-1993)
– The Washington Post (1877-1996)

The trial can be accessed via the Online Library / Databases on the library webpages with Institutional Login.

The trial will run until 22nd March 2013. So try it out and let us know what you think.

New version of Write-N-Cite for RefWorks

There is a new version of Write-N-Cite for RefWorks and you can download it on your pcs. To find it log in to RefWorks go to Tools and then Write-N-Cite and Downloads

The new version will be available in the University pcs over the summer. The old will phase out in December 2013.

Disruption on Library Level 2

From Monday 29 April and lasting for several weeks there will be work being carried out on Level 2 of the Library. This will involve the respacing of the journals collection and movement of the Law collection in readiness for the summer building work on Level 5. We apologise for any noise and disruption on Level 2 which we will try to keep to a minimum.

Please ask at the desk on Level 1 if you cannot find anything.
