Reference Manager 12 – no longer available after 27 November 2013

Reference Manager is a software package which allows you to store bibliographic references, to insert citations as you write a document, and to generate a bibliography.

As from, 27 November 2013 Reference Manager 12 will not be available to download from the University of Surrey Software Portal.

Users are advised to back up their data and move it to another bibliographic reference software platform such as RefWorks or Endnote.

This helpsheet explains how to backup your Reference Manager data and import it into RefWorks.

Advance warning – noisy building work outside the Library from Monday 17 June

Work to clad the outside of the old Library building, to improve temperature control and air circulation, begins in earnest on Monday 17 June and we are expecting some particularly noisy construction work in the first 2-3 weeks. This noisy work may affect you if you are planning to use the Library between 17 June – 5 July – worse affected areas will be outside the old Library building. Library staff will be on hand if you need help finding a quieter place to study but if you have any concerns about using the Library over this period please contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

Library building improvements for Autumn 2013

The next phase of the Library redevelopment project begins summer 2013 with refurbishment of Levels 4 and 5 of the old Library building – Level 5 work taking place this summer and Level 4 in summer 2014.
Externally work also begins soon to clad the old building in line with the look of the new Learning Centre. This is not just cosmetic but will also help to keep out the leaks and cold!

New Level 5 facilities

There are some great new facilities planned for Level 5, building on the successful learning spaces which are so popular with students in the Learning Centre and providing some dedicated training and networking facilities for PGRs:
• A new silent study room (similar to the one in the Learning Centre), to provide insulated silent study space
• Additional computers in the open plan areas with new, modern furniture
• Flexible and dedicated PGR training room to support the extended researcher training programme
• An informal collaborative space for researchers to meet and network with other researchers across campus

We look forward to welcoming you to this much improved space in the Autumn, and to bear with us during some unavoidable noise and disruption in the summer. We will be providing regular updates about when noisy work is planned and Level 5 stock relocations, but if you have any particular concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

We have a trial of the full collection of Oxford Handbooks Online during May 2013. Subject areas covered include Criminology/Criminal Justice, Economics and Finance, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Music, Politics and Psychology.

Access is via the databases pages. Use Institutional log in for off campus access

NEW TRIAL! ProQuest Historical Newspapers Online

ProQuest Historical Newspapers is the definitive newspaper digital archive offering full-text and full-image articles for significant newspapers dating back to the 18th Century. For the trial we have access to:

– Boston Globe (1872-1981)
– Chicago Tribune (1849-1989)
– Los Angeles Times (1881-1989)
– New York Tribune / Herald Tribune (1841-1962)
– The New York Times (1851-2009) with Index (1851-1993)
– The Washington Post (1877-1996)

The trial can be accessed via the Online Library / Databases on the library webpages with Institutional Login.

The trial will run until 22nd March 2013. So try it out and let us know what you think.

The Academic Liaison Librarian team are continuing to hold drop in sessions during Semester weeks between 11.00am – 3.00pm, Monday – Friday.

Find us in the Advisory Zone in SPLASH on Level 3 of the Library where we can provide support on finding and using information sources. No appointment needed.

JSTOR access off-campus

There is currently an issue with logging into JSTOR off campus. We are investigating this.

In the meantime, please use this workaround to get into JSTOR off campus:

Use our Secure Web Access from Anywhere service: http://remote.surrey.ac.uk/
Log in with your University login and password
From the list of links that appears, select ejournals @surrey and search for the journal title
Click on the link to JSTOR in the results list to open the website
Alternatively, you can access JSTOR via the link to the online databases page which is also available in the list of links.
You should be able to open any article that we have access to
