Important new resource for Law – JustCite – a legal search engine

JustCite is a legal search engine, that focuses on case law and legislation from common law jurisdictions around the world. You can search for a case or piece of legislation and the search engine will link you to the fulltext of that information via LexisLibrary, Westlaw, BAILII or i-Law.

Criminal Justice Abstracts – full text trial

Reference Manager 12 – no longer available after 27 November 2013

Reference Manager is a software package which allows you to store bibliographic references, to insert citations as you write a document, and to generate a bibliography.

As from, 27 November 2013 Reference Manager 12 will not be available to download from the University of Surrey Software Portal.

Users are advised to back up their data and move it to another bibliographic reference software platform such as RefWorks or Endnote.

This helpsheet explains how to backup your Reference Manager data and import it into RefWorks.

Advance warning – noisy building work outside the Library from Monday 17 June

Work to clad the outside of the old Library building, to improve temperature control and air circulation, begins in earnest on Monday 17 June and we are expecting some particularly noisy construction work in the first 2-3 weeks. This noisy work may affect you if you are planning to use the Library between 17 June – 5 July – worse affected areas will be outside the old Library building. Library staff will be on hand if you need help finding a quieter place to study but if you have any concerns about using the Library over this period please contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

Library building improvements for Autumn 2013

The next phase of the Library redevelopment project begins summer 2013 with refurbishment of Levels 4 and 5 of the old Library building – Level 5 work taking place this summer and Level 4 in summer 2014.
Externally work also begins soon to clad the old building in line with the look of the new Learning Centre. This is not just cosmetic but will also help to keep out the leaks and cold!

New Level 5 facilities

There are some great new facilities planned for Level 5, building on the successful learning spaces which are so popular with students in the Learning Centre and providing some dedicated training and networking facilities for PGRs:
• A new silent study room (similar to the one in the Learning Centre), to provide insulated silent study space
• Additional computers in the open plan areas with new, modern furniture
• Flexible and dedicated PGR training room to support the extended researcher training programme
• An informal collaborative space for researchers to meet and network with other researchers across campus

We look forward to welcoming you to this much improved space in the Autumn, and to bear with us during some unavoidable noise and disruption in the summer. We will be providing regular updates about when noisy work is planned and Level 5 stock relocations, but if you have any particular concerns or queries please don’t hesitate to contact Clare West, Customer Services Experience Manager (clare.west@surrey.ac.uk 01483 683951).

Law Collection move on Level 2

The Law Collection (books at 34-, journals and law reports) is moving. The move will take place between Wednesday 12th and Friday 14th June. The new location of the Law collection will still be on Level 2 of the Library but at the far West end of the floor. You will still have full access to materials while the move takes place.
