Even more remarkably, as social networking has entered the mainstream, it has also quickly become not just an occasional diversion but a habitual part of American life. In 2009, 18% of social networkers in America checked their sites and services several times a day. Just one year later, this figure stands at 30%, even as the total number of social networkers has grown. With both numbers growing dramatically, the actual number of Americans with "the social habit," who check their social media sites multiple times per day, has more than doubled, from approximately 18 million to 39 million.
This new report, based upon the 18th Edison Research/Arbitron Internet and Multimedia Research Series, examines these habitual social networkers, providing information on dempgraphics, status updating behaviors, mobile access and how social media has affected their consumption of other media. Fieldwork was conducted by telephone by Princeton Survey Research Associates between April 30 and July 20, 2003, among a sample of 2,507 respondents ages 18 to 64 years. The sample includes 2,042 respondents who are covered by health insurance (including 1,542 who are insured through an employer and 152 who purchase their own insurance), and 457 uninsured respondents. Results for all groups have been weighted to reflect the actual distribution in the nation.
The margin of sampling error for the survey is plus or minus 2 percentage points for total respondents; for respondents with health insurance it is plus or minus 2 percentage points; for respondents insured through an employer it is plus or minus 3 percentage points; for respondents who purchase their own insurance it is plus or minus 9 percentage points; and for uninsured respondents it is plus or minus 5 percentage points. For results based on subsets of respondents the margin of error is higher. Note that sampling error is only one of many potential sources of error in this or any other public opinion poll. When asked in December 2008, 49 percent reported using credit cards in the past 12 months to finance their firms. In late- April, however, that number jumped to 59 percent. This increase is occurring despite a rise in the number of small businesses reporting worsening credit-card terms. Asked to evaluate their credit-card terms over the last five years, 79 percent reported worsening terms—up from 69 percent in December 2008. Even more eye-opening: when asked if their credit-card terms had worsened in the last six months, a whopping 75 percent reported that they had.
