The premise of the show is fairly simple: a few people (typically, four or five) take it in turns to host a dinner party for all the contestants. After each meal, everyone (except the host) rates the meal on a scale of 1 to 10, and after the final meal the scores are tallied and the host with the highest score wins.

In order to ensure consistency, each host has to prepare, cook and serve a three course meal consisting of starter, main course and dessert. As well as the food, they also have to arrange some form of entertainment for their guests - this can typically take the form of some kind of party game, or some form of performance either by the host or by people that the host knows. For example, the entertainment section on some recent UK shows has included a limbo competition, disco dancing and a performance by a band of steel drummers.
