Sun, surf, sand, cocktails, cabanas, (cabana boys!), a little shopping, a lot of laughing, even more dancing, and doing it all with several of my best girlfriends this weekend at the Fontainbleau. Just one of the many ways I’m celebrating turning 50. Because I am celebrating.

I used to be one of those people who complained about their age. Not any more. I’m here. I’m healthy. And if you have your health (and a margarita with salt), you have everything.

See you when I get back. That is if I ever come back!

The kids and I celebrated Stu's birthday at his favorite restaurant, Red Lobster. I have to confess though, that while the boys drank Cokes in their Dad's honor, I chickened out of ordering Jack Daniels. How my husband drank that stuff and drove I'll never know. But I knew I couldn't do it!

This past Saturday, the boys and I took our first Christmas picture without Stu. I don’t think Case and Cuy gave it much thought, Case because he was too busy trying to stay warm (when you’re 6’3″, weigh nothing, and are outside in just jeans and a button down shirt, 45 degrees is freezing), and Cuy, because he was simply trying not to fall asleep standing there (which is what you get for staying up all night playing video games, dude!). I know I didn’t really think about it at the time because I was caught up in saying helpful things like, “Smile, dammit!” And “Stop hitting each other!” And, “Cuy, if you fall into me one more time, I’m going to beat you!” And “Case, your nose is running. Tissues. Try some!” And Kim, my beautiful, talented friend from Joslyn Place Photography, just kept laughing at us.

Frankly, I didn’t think we got a single shot worth using but then I saw this and I realized not only did we get a good one of the three of us, we got a good one of the four of us…

Thanks for making the shoot, sweetheart, and for refraining from pelting the kids with bird poop.They definitely deserved it though, didn’t they?

Cancer kills an American a minute

It’s a terrifying reality: cancer claims the life of just about one American every minute. That’s 1,500 people a day. Another 3,400 a day are diagnosed with cancer. It’s practically an epidemic, and it’s time to get smarter about stopping it.

The first step in that direction? The Ruesch Center‘s three-part symposium, Fighting a Smarter War Against Cancer, to be held December 1-3, 2011, on the campuses of Georgetown University and Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. The symposium is FREE and open to the public.

Fighting a Smarter War Against Cancer will bring together top thought leaders and health care practitioners from the U.S. and around the world to discuss cancer care in relation to public policy, value, and personalized medicine. Topics include Health Care Reform: Opportunity or Sacrifice?, Defining Value in Cancer Care, and Navigating Cancer Care: What Every Patient Should Know.

I’m always flattered when the Huffington Post runs my pieces, but today I just about flipped when I saw where my latest was placed:
