With tons of content being published every day on the Internet, and tons of junk at that, who do you spend your time reading? Who can you trust for solid content and insights in various areas? If you've been online a long time, like I have, you realize that you can't just read every bit of content and blogger that comes along. You learn to cherry-pick the best. And that saves you time, too. Focus, and screen out the ones that don't help. I've added my list here.

I've been online a long time working in a couple of main specialties.</>

I am a finance expert offline, so business topics are always on my mind. Especially those involving money. My money. And your money.

I'm also involved in website design, content copywriting, and conversion optimization. I use these both for my websites and for client websites I manage.

It's a pretty crazy list of skills, in a way, but it comes naturally from what I used to do — and still do somewhat — offline. It makes me a good consultant. Plus, I just enjoy exercising both my left and right brains. Some days one more than the other.

So I decided to finally release this post — which I'll update regularly — with my current list of People I Listen To and Why.

I'll make it easy for you in case you're only interested in one of my "skill sets."

Business & Finance: People I Trust and Read

Entrepreneur Magazine (online) in the Entrepreneur.com's "Control What You Can" section. Also, their How To section: I know it's a sometimes-cliched choice, but I love this magazine both online and in print. The website frankly gets overwhelming in their total content, much of it that I don't find personally useful. But it's a great place to go look for useful content for my clients, too. When you are in "browse and learn" mode or "content creation" mode, this site is invaluable.

Personal Finance & Life Topics: People I Trust and Read

Frugal Living on About.com (FrugalLiving on About.com): I browse this site quite a bit. About.com can have wonderful content if you know where to look, and I'm always on the lookout for ways to budget, save money, and manage my financial life, as well as helping others I know with the same topics. It's a great starter for education about managing your money and saving it.

Website & Design Blogs: People I Trust and Read

SitePoint.com: When it comes to focused, solid information on a zillion website, design, and programming topics, SitePoint has no equal in my mind. Sure, there are Q&A sites out there that can have incredibly targeted answers to things, but when you want to learn, SitePoint winds for me hands-down.

Content Development & Copywriting Blogs: People I Trust and Read

Neil Patel of NeilPatel.com: He's got some serious skills, and he teaches well on the articles on his blog. He's developed a huge audience and many posts focus on how you can improve your blog in a wide range of ways. I've learned plenty about building audiences and traffic from him.

Paul Myers at TalkBizNews.com: I've been reading Paul's newsletters for ages now. He has an incredible subscriber list, and his content is top-notch every time. Sometimes he varies widely in his topics for a newsletter, but I've never found one that wasn't incredibly informative. Often it is even entertaining. As an all-around business online / blog writer, he's top-notch.

Conversion & Optimization Blogs: People I Trust and Read

Sean D'Souza at <a href="http://www.psychotactics.com/" target"=
_blank">Psychotactics.com: When I first found Sean's site, I was blown away by the quality of what he had to say. He's got some products that are pure gold, and he's a teacher with the mindset to teach you to "do" and not just "learn information." That's not even counting the tons of free content about how audiences behave, learning to target them better, and so much more. You could spend weeks just reading, so bring some focus with you when you visit.

Jon Morrow of Boostblogtraffic.com: Again, another serious teacher of the best stuff on conversions. Frankly, he could be in the content development section, too, but he focuses on the target audience so well I had to add him here.

Wrap-Up

This list is likely to grow, shrink, and change every so often based on my ongoing experiences online. Sometimes the people I listen to no longer discuss topics that matter to me in my current journey. Sometimes new folks come along who have developed my unquestioning trust in their content over time. And I expect over time my own interest and expertise will grow or change, leading to new people to follow.

And, so you know, nobody makes it onto this list until I've been reading a ton of their content — enough to be certain that they belong on my "People I Trust" reading list. No junk here. I want these recommendations to help you, not burden you with even more junky online content to consume.

Thanks for reading and I hope you get some good out of my list.
-Susan

Once again, it's time to upgrade QuickBooks if your version is below 2014. Read our comparison to help you decide which version and year you should buy or upgrade to. While you may balk at upgrading just because Intuit says so, they won't provide security fixes, bug fixes, or any updates or support to your software if you aren't on a supported version. So painful as it is to be forced to upgrade, here's our take on the best version choices.

Once again, in its revenue-driving practices, Intuit is rolling out the new QuickBooks 2016 accounting software. Revenue-driving, because they will now only support the latest three releases — QuickBooks 2016, QuickBooks 2015, and QuickBooks 2014.

In May of each year, support goes away for lower releases. So you've got until the end of April 2016 to take care of upgrading.

If you are considering a purchase of QuickBooks for the first time, knowing Intuit's support policy on releases is good to know. You won't be buying something that you can use past three years without risking security and bug issues. However, they do make upgrading extremely painless, which I admire.

Nevertheless, the company does make good accounting software, and I'd like to share my experience with different versions of the 2016 QuickBooks products. You can read my comparison of them below.

Which Version of QuickBooks Is Best For My Company?

Intuit rolls out a new release each year, and all releases have ongoing support for three years. That includes security updates, bug fixes, and tiny enhancements.

So what it really comes down to is features. What features does your company need?

Keep in mind here that many of us are prone to "shiny object syndrome" where you think extra features are a good idea "just in case." Please don't do that with accounting software unless you are SURE you are upgrading company operations to include non-basic inventory, sales orders and backorders, custom pricing by customer, or advanced industry reporting. Those are the only real benefits to the Premier edition.

I use Premier because I do my clients' accounting, and because my own company needs custom pricing and sales orders for projects. Most small businesses with just regular accounting and payroll can usually get by with Pro or Pro with Enhanced Payroll, saving you money.

I'm comparing three editions here. Enterprise edition is so different and evaluation much more extensive, so I'll leave that for another day. If you need Enterprise, you usually know you do upfront.

QuickBooks Pro 2016

QuickBooks Pro 2016 with Enhanced Payroll

QuickBooks Premier 2016

What Do I Get With QuickBooks Pro 2016?

QuickBooks Pro is a great workhorse for accounting for small businesses. You'll have all of the wonderful features common to quality accounting packages like:

Accounts Receivable with invoicing, payment receipts, and estimates

Accounts Payable with purchase orders, vendor records, and checking

Sales tax tracking, collection, and payment

Online banking integration for balancing your checking account

Excellent customizable reporting

Most businesses don't do much more than that, and some are even simple enough that you barely need accounting software at all instead of Excel or paper records.

There are 3 reasons I strongly recommend accounting software in the first place:

Fewer mistakes, because QuickBooks does your math — and right every time.

Much faster reporting — built-in reports with extensive filtering ability means you get information faster — and so does your accountant. That saves money.

Watching your back — in addition to math errors, data entry often includes date entry errors and mis-classifications. QuickBooks can be set to warn you about unusual dates on transactions and it can auto-fill accounts during entry to minimize mistakes. And quick reports are another way to easily spot entry mistakes. Excel can't do that and Quicken can't do that.

If you are new to QuickBooks Payroll, you should read on to learn more about adding Enhanced Payroll to your purchase.

Why Should I Buy QuickBooks Pro 2016 with Enhanced Payroll?

Basically, the program in the box is the same in all features.

However, if you've never done payroll in your existing QuickBooks version before, and you plan to start, this purchase is a great deal for first-time payroll users.

Unfortunately, the purchase only works with this lower price for new payroll account users. If you already do payroll, you're stuck paying the annual renewal fee for the payroll subscription and updates. No way to prevent that. And after the first year with this purchase, you're stuck on that renewal plan, too.

Since that payroll key is $300+ annually for most companies, at least the deal the first time around is a time-saver and money-saver.

And Intuit has sneaky ways to keep you on the payroll subscription. For example, if your subscription runs out, you no longer even have access to your payroll module. And they up the cost of that subscription constantly.

There is one way you might save money on payroll. Intuit has a program called the ProAdvisor program. I am a member of it. As accounting professionals, we offer consulting, advice, payroll, and other help to companies. We use an Accountant's key to do payroll for you, and generally the cost from a ProAdvisor to have them do your small payroll is a bit cheaper than a separate payroll subscription.

Yes, some ProAdvisors do use this as a revenue stream and charge more for doing your payroll that the key might cost you, but you can find a cheaper ProAdvisor doing payroll, or you at least are saved the hassle of doing your own payroll.

Other than that, let's take a look at Premier.

Why Would I Choose Premier 2016

For QuickBooks Premier, once again, this comes down to the feature set.

In addition to all of the features that come with the Pro edition, you have some other goodies that can make your life easier. If you're like me and a bit obsessive about lots of great reports to look at regularly, you might like the extra reports available.

The big additional features are:

Advanced Inventory, Assembled Items, and Inventory Average Costing — Pro can do basic simple quantity counting, but anything resembling REAL inventory tracking is going to be much easier in Premier.

Sales Orders and Back Order Tracking — If you are a retailer or wholesaler, this might be a big part of your business.

Wider Range of Reports — Enough said already. You can customize reports in Pro to get something like this, but you have to do it manually and know how to customize them expertly.

Contractors — you get job costs and A/P by job

Manufacturers and Wholesalers — Tracking sales volume by customer or profitability by individual products

Retailers — reports on purchase volumes by vendors and similar reports

Non-Profits — the donor reporting, grant reports, and budgets vs actual for individual programs

Professional Service Providers — billed vs proposals for projects and unbilled expenses (both big things for a service business)

Custom Pricing for Customers — For service businesses, retailers, and wholesalers, this is a BIG Deal. Invoicing will go much faster without having to adjust pricing all the time and look up everyone's custom pricing. One change in a customer record, and it goes smoothly.

Additional multiple user capability — you can buy an add-on 3 user license (up from 1 to 3 users) in Pro, but in Premier you can upgrade from 1 user to 5 users. If you need more than 3 people to be able to log in and work simultaneously, this is helpful.

So there are some high-powered extra features in Premier. But I've worked in accounting for 25 years now, and I constantly run into companies who were persuaded to buy Premier without much thought to it. And I'll bet nearly 70% of them hardly ever use the extra power.

If you do, you'll like Premier over Pro, even if for just one or two features. But don't waste your money if you don't need it.

So Let's Take A Comparison Look Side by Side

Here's a quick side-by-side of most of the main features of both Pro and Premier.

You can also see some additional comparisons here.

And I want to share that with you today.

We've all been there — the customer who creates great stress in their desire to have their perceived wrongs be righted by the company you work for. You may feel your company is in the right, but anyone who has done customer service for a while knows that being right and satisfying the customer aren't always the same thing.

That's why I like this article. It brings home the point that underlies the best customer service you can ever provide. The customer isn't always 100% right, but that doesn't matter even one bit. You will always win in the long run if you always treat the customer as if they were right.

You avoid name-calling, frustrated customers blasting negativity about you all over the web, and unhappy customers who inevitably make more unhappy customers. You lose business. You end up with demoralized customer service staff. It's just a real lose-lose setup.

There are lots of reasons to treat your customers with the utmost respect, no matter what the circumstances are.

Check out this article on customer service for a breath of fresh air to reinvigorate your customer service team.

It's a phenomenon we run into all the time. People love your business, but they don't like to take the time to do a review, or write it down, or maybe they just get busy and forget. So they ask us how to get the word out.

One solution I recommend is to cultivate your "brand advocates." Brand advocates are people who love your company, and who have an outgoing personality. They love to connect with people with similar interests, and get a big kick out of sharing their personal knowledge with their circle of friends.

Don't try to change the leopard's spots and get someone to share who doesn't want to. Find people who like to share.

Brand advocates are predisposed towards sharing, enjoy helping people they know, and are motivated by the recognition they get from others by providing them with helpful information.

You Can Create a Win-Win-Win Situation by Connecting with Brand Advocates

You win because you've got fans out there talking about you in great ways, and with lots of people. Brand advocates usually have a lot of connections. Advocates are highly trusted individuals within their circles and according to research they are 1.5 times more likely to value being seen as a reliable source of information. They enjoy the recognition, and you can help them get that recognition.

If you actively recognize their advocacy and offer special ways to spread the word that help them feel good about both you and the knowledge they share with their circle, you'll both win. And by getting good information out to their friends, you build your brand audience wider.

Best of all, you can work together with your advocates, maybe even by offering them some special knowledge that isn't "out in the wild" yet, so you give them a chance to share their enthusiasm for your brand, help out their friends, and get the enjoyment of being in the know and sharing it.

Oddly enough, even though you might stress about promoting your business brand, over half of the advocates you find out sharing their experiences say they find it a form of relaxation.

So you can seek out people who already love your brand and are sharing their experiences and help them take the next step to being a brand advocate. All it takes is some of your time, and some positive recognition and personal care to build a solid relationship with them. Everybody wins.

Doesn't matter which version you have installed. Powerpoint Slides are considered "the way to go" for marketing presentations with slides.

With the increase in content marketing online, sites like SlideShare.net are offering a great opportunity for companies to publish their content across Internet and gain additional leads and traffic.

In fact, browsing around published items on their site is a great way to learn more about what works and doesn't work.

However, you should definitely also consider these Top 5 Tips for your Powerpoint presentation to make sure you are marketing effectively.

Contrast is good between slide backgrounds and text colors. But don't overdo it. Headache-creating contrasts like red on black, yellow on black, or other unattractive color combinations won't make your audience appreciate you. And they'll spend less time looking at the information on your slides.

You should be generous with your white space. It sets the tone of your presentation, and it affects usability and readability. White space has impact. And you should concentrate your best white space around the most important items on the slide to focus your listener's eye.

Other than a corporate logo or one design graphic to emphasize branding, you should use no more than one graphic or illustrative chart on a page.

Avoid any distracting transitions on your slide presentation. It takes away from your message by making you look like an amateur. Good old-fashioned basics is the way to go. The pretty presentation of your information is not the point. Making the sale is what you are after.

Don't overwhelm any slides with too much information. The safest rule to follow is the 666 Rule. No more than 6 bullets per slide, 6 words per bullet, and 6 word slides presented back-to-back. Anything more will overwhelm the audience and they'll miss part of your critical message.

So there's the big tips for marketing effectively using Powerpoint slide presentations. Follow these basic tips and you'll have a much better speaking experience next time out.

Once the opening salvo in your marketing plan battle has been fired, you need regular input from the battlefield in order to keep your marketing plan up-to-date and on-track.

As a business, you don't want to dump good money after bad.

Keeping track of your marketing statistics isn't hard with the right software. You can use special online web services to track the effects of your marketing plan online. Then you roll that information back into managing your marketing plan so you can adapt for maximum value.

Statistics include information about numbers of visitors to the site and each page, how long the visitors stick around, what areas of content they spend the most time viewing, where they came from to visit your site, what search terms they used to find your content, and much more.

The more user marketing intelligence you have, the more refined you can make your Internet marketing.

How Do You Do Marketing Statistics Analysis?

You can set up tracking software to monitor the types of information I mentioned above. The key, however, isn't in having the statistics available, it's in knowing what they mean.

You should review this information regularly and use it to increase marketing on channels and with keywords that are succeeding, and determine whether to adjust or discontinue other elements of your marketing plan. Google Analytics is free, and it is also one of the most mature statistics programs online. There are tons of articles online for maximizing its use, and Google's own Help Section is actually pretty good in itself.

Your Potential Return on Investment (ROI) from Analysis of Your Marketing Stats

The key to high Internet marketing ROI is maximizing your gains from successful tactics, adjusting elements that need an additional push or change, and discontinuing methods that are showing negative results or which aren't successful enough compared to the implementation and maintenance cost.

Without measurable and detailed data, you can't tell the difference between winners and losers in the marketing plan management game. So, for maximum ROI, track and analyze your results.

Plan and Manage Your Business Brand and Reputation

This is a tricky subject to discuss, which is definitely unfortunate. When businesses are choosing where to invest hard-earned dollars, monitoring services and reactive activities like reputation management tend to lose out to seemingly "more useful" services.

The problem with services like this is the difficulty in quantifying the return on investment for an ongoing fee. How do you put a value on the absence of a negative?

What is the Value of Social Media Monitoring and Reputation Management?

Although car maintenance isn't as obvious as a new paint job or detailing for your car, it's still a necessity for your car to deliver good service. At least if you want it to keep running.

Reputation management is like car maintenance. You need to regularly monitor where you stand in the social media networks — comments, mentions, negative reviews, and more — or a total disaster could sneak up on your brand and knock you for a hard fall before you're even aware of it headed your way.

Monitoring and reputation management are a social media one-two punch that you need in the modern "social Internet." There are so many channels for sharing information about your company and a regular process is the best way to keep tabs without things falling through the gap.

And if something comes up — bad reviews, a former employee or former customer who slams your customer service, out-and-out lying by competitors — you've got to be trained on how to respond to the negatives, and you've got to know that the issue came up in the first place.

And if you get some positive feedback, regular social media monitoring uncovers that, too, and allows you to interact socially with that information, sharing it out to fans and prospects to boost your brand.

53% of users of social networking sites use consumer reviews to help choose local businesses to use (Search Engine Watch, even back in October of 2009) Don't you think it would be a good idea to know about reviews and make sure you've positively dealt with any issues?

Your Potential Return on Investment (ROI) from Reputation Management

For the most part, the ROI on reputation management is avoiding problems that could arise. By carefully managing your company brand, you don't end up on the losing end of the reputation game. Nothing bad happens, and you don't have to waste your time, staff time, or your money having a professional company help you to rescue your brand. That's a solid savings. But sometimes it seems a little wishy-washy compared to real dollars in.

But even if you have a hard time calculating the savings of a non-disaster, there is a positive ROI for reputation management. In all that monitoring and watching, you have the opportunity to discover the "positive elements" of your brand as broadcast by friendly parties in social media, review sites, and more.

Once you've discovered these gems, you can spread the word about this fabulously useful information to your network. And that can translate to prospects, sales, revenue, goodwill, and enhanced trust.

And those elements of positive ROI are something you cannot purchase at any price.
