A heart-felt post on Vinos Tendal's Instagram on the 16th of July, 2023 reads:

"How to write these lines for all of you without being overwhelmed by grief and sorrow? It is impossible.
We would like to inform you that on the 15th of July, our bodega said goodbye to us amidst the flames caused by the fire on La Palma. We only hope that it was not a farewell, but only a see you later.
We will fight hard to make it happen, we will help it get up and rise again from the ashes.
Soon you will know the second chapter of the beautiful story behind Bodegas Tendal.
Greetings friends!"

JORNADAS TÉCNICAS SOBRE LOS EFECTOS DEL CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO EN LA VITICULTURA DE LANZAROTE

CONFERENCIAS A IMPARTIR EN EL MUSEO EL CAMPESINO

Viernes 07 de octubre de 2022, de 18 a 21 horas,

Conferencia experiencial sobre “Los trabajos que se están llevando a cabo para mitigar los efectos del cambio climático, en la isla de Picos (Azores, Portugal) y cata de algunos de los vinos más representativos de Azores”. Impartido por Filipe Rocha, Director de la Escuela de Formación Turística y Hotelera en Punta Delgada y presidente de Azores WineCompany.

El paisaje vitícola de esta isla es patrimonio de la Unesco y tiene una similitud muy grande con la Isla de Lanzarote. El duro trabajo hecho sobre la roca volcánica y los campos de lava permiten contemplar el milagro del crecimiento de las uvas en este entorno inhóspito y aparentemente indomable

El paisaje de las viñas de Pico en cuadrículas sorprendentes llamadas “curráis”, muestran parcelas rectangulares con sus muros de piedra volcánica suelta que los habitantes de Pico construyeron hace siglos para proteger las viñas de los vientos y las nieblas procedentes del mar. Un sistema sencillo con un resultado absolutamente acertado que propició la producción del Vino de la isla de Pico. Aunque también influyeron otros factores importantes, como el microclima cálido y seco de la zona, y las características de la roca volcánica, que retiene el calor, convirtiendo los “currais” en auténticos invernaderos. También hay que hablar de la riqueza en nutrientes del suelo volcánico.

Conferencia a cargo de D. Alberto Gerardo González Plasencia, Ingeniero Técnico Agrícola y Enólogo, sobre “Las estrategias a seguir en campo y bodega para mitigar los efectos del cambio climático”.

Alberto González es uno de los enólogos de mayor prestigio y reconocimiento de nuestro país. Su proyecto sobre el cambio climático en la Universidad de Córdoba, le fue reconocido con la matrícula de honor en dicha Universidad.

Conferencia a cargo de José Peñín, sobre “Las tendencias de los nuevos consumidores de vino y los retos frente al cambio climático”.

José Peñin es posiblemente el escritor de vinos más prolífico de habla hispana y uno de los periodistas y escritores más experimentados en materia vitivinícola, decano de la profesión y el más conocido a nivel internacional. Creador de la guía de vinos "Guia Peñín" como referente más influyente en el comercio internacional de vinos españoles y la más consultada a nivel mundial, lo que le convierte el más importante creador de corrientes de opinión en torno al vino. Viajero infatigable, ha recorrido casi todos los viñedos del mundo, a la vez es conferenciante, consultor, catador de reconocido prestigio y miembro de diferentes jurados internacionales.

Conferencia a cargo de Dª Isabel Mijares y García-Pelayo, sobre “los nuevos retos en viticultura frente al cambio climático”

Una de las grandes pioneras del mundo del vino: en 1990 fue la primera mujer que presidió un consejo regulador de vino en Europa, el de Valdepeñas,. También fue la primera enóloga en trabajar en una bodega en España

Es uno de los grandes referentes femeninos del sector enológico y lo es no sólo a nivel regional, también en la esfera nacional e internacional. Esta Licenciada en Ciencias Químicas por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y es jefa de proyectos vitivinícolas de la ONU y secretaria de la Unión Internacional de Enólogos. Además ha colaborado con  Émile Peynaud, que está considerado como el padre de la enología moderna, en las especialidades de dirección de bodegas, instalación de nuevas plantas, envejecimiento de vinos y muy especialmente en análisis sensorial.

En 1999 puso en marcha la Guía Repsol de Vinos y en la actualidad es vicepresidenta de la Federación Internacional de Periodistas y Escritores de Vinos, vicepresidenta honoraria de la Asociación Española de Sumilleres y académica de número de la Real Academia de Gastronomía. Además, empresarialmente, es fundadora y presidente del Equipo TEAM, Técnicas Enológicas y Alimentarias Mijares S.L., una consultoría para el sector alimentario y vitivinícola.

Conferencia sobre ““Las variedades locales y/o minoritarias cultivadas en Canarias como estrategia para mitigar los efectos del cambio climático”a cargo de Dª María Francesca Fort Marsal, Investigadora y Profesora del Departamento de biotecnología y bioquímica de la Universidad de Rovira i Virgili, Cataluña.

Sábado 03 de diciembre, de 18 a 21 horas

Cata de los mejores vinos dulces de Canarias, con la participación de unas 60/65 personas relacionadas con la viticultura la restauración. A cargo de D. Alberto González Plasencia.

El objetivo de esta cata es sensibilizar al sector de que frente al cambio climático, con las sobre maduraciones que se producirán en un futuro, una salida para la uva de Lanzarote es la elaboración de vinos dulces.

The Yogic Guide to Life's Resources

I have recently started an "off the mat" yoga course called The Yogic Guide to Life, which is an 11 part weekly sessions where the yamas and the niyamas will be discussed.

Help me help them - Initiative # 2: Tip Jars

As I said on my first "Help me help them" post, loads of free online initiativites have started to keep people entertainted -and somehow sane- during lockdown.

One that I find myself drifting towards the most is hearing my favourite local musicians playing live on the internet. Another one is exercise classes, whether it's cardio or a more relaxing yoga. There are also poets and writers reading their own works or the ones they love, etc. You get the drift.

I suspect they do it not only for our benefit but to keep themselves going too!

Often these people who are helping to keep our spirits have lost all or a big chunk of their income - as a load of us have, too. Some of them have started online "tip jars", most of the time via PayPal accounts.

Help me help them - Initiative # 1: Thank you for the music

If something good comes out of troubled times, in my opinion, is ta stronger sense of community arises.

Since the enforced lockdown started, due to the current sanitary emergency, I have seen initiatives popping up everywhere to help people stay sane, pass the time, keep the kids busy, cheer everybody up, etc.

One of the first initiatives I saw was by a friend of mine who is a Hungarian musician living here in the beautiful island of Lanzarote:

According to google it translates as something like:

Although I have no videos yet, I plan to share a few things. (Note: since his post on the 24th of March, 2020 till today, he has already loaded 6 videos!).

Musicians have been one of the first collectives to offer their concerts / gigs online for free to get us through the current times. I think it's a brilliant idea to show them our appreciation.

So, help me help them, please.

Support your favourite bands, local musicians, etc by:
1) looking up their YouTube channels
2) subscribing to them
3) watching their videos, making comments, sharing them...
4) encouraging other people to follow this initiative.

I guess it also works for anyone that has a YouTube channel, not only musicians but artists of all types: trainers, educators, speakers, crafters, make-up artists, gardeners, cooks... and a long, long etc.
And if you have a YouTube channel yourselves, don't forget to return the subscription to any one that subscribes to yours!

3 less plastic things in my life

The amount of plastic that we use on our everyday life is astonishing. You only have to look at the news or read a paper and you see how much plastic is invading our seas and our waters.

Also, because I live in an island, the currents bring a lot of that plastic and other rubbish to our shores. I even started volunteering every now and then, with different volunteer groups in the island doing beach clean ups.

However the more I see, the more I'm convinced that while recycling is good and beach clean-ups are necessary, the answer to dramatically reduce the plastic invasion is by changing the way things are produced and preserved.

Over the last year I have been seriously thinking about how, as a simple consumer, I can contribute to that.

So I have been changing some of the things I use on a regular basis for others either without plastic, with biodegradable materials or more durable/easier to recycle materials.

Today I bring you three examples of plastic things that I used to buy that now are made of paper.

I have longlife shopping bags which I try to use as much as possible. But we all foget them in the house or in the car, even easily foldable ones. But I'm lucky enough that the local supermarket that I use the most have introduced paper shopping bags. Afterwards, I reuse these for carrying things or even to store paper and carboard to bring to the recycling bin.

-Cotton buds
When I was looking for alternatives to the plastic ones I found silicone and bamboo reusable ones. In the end, I ended up using this ones that have the "stick" in the middle made of paper. Remember how lollypops used to have paper sticks too before? I used to have fun trying to unroll it once I had eaten the sweet! How come it took so long to make cotton buds the same way?
As anybody who's clean a beach will know lollypop / cotton bud plastic sticks are one of the most common things to find.

-Deodorant
I had tried other types of more durable deodorants, the mineral rock type, but never really got used to it. I was missing some sort of nice scent that traditional spray, stick or roll-on ones have. And although I have to say I do miss the spray format I used to use, these paper wrapped stick ones are lovely, not so different from any of the old stick deodorants, but with the advantage that the packaging is less polutting than the plastic ones.

My goal is to keep replacing or even eliminating altogether, bit by bit, as many plastic in my life as possible.

Hace tiempo que no he escrito sobre mi año socializando sobria, así que aquí estoy.

Me había ido bastante bien pero no hace falta ser un lumbreras dado el título del artículo para darse cuenta que he tenido un par de recaídas.

La primera, ya hace un tiempo, había salido con una amiga, había estado sobría socializando, y nos paramos literalmente a unos metros de mi casa a comer algo por lo que pensé que no sería un problema beber una copa de vino. El problema es que no paré ahí. Iba camino de casa, estaba comiendo y estaba con una amiga en la que confío. ¿Qué podía salir mal? No mucho, pero salió mal. Decidí tomar una segunda copa de vino. Por suerte, la cosa quedó en eso.
La mañana siguiente tenía una resaca descomunal, lo suficientemente grande para recordarme el por qué estoy haciendo esto.

Todo fue bien después de esto hasta que recientemente fui de vacaciones con un amigo. Otra vez, empecé a beber mientras comía, y qué demonios, estoy de vacaciones con alguien en quien confío, lejos del drama que me empujó a decidir no beber socialmente por lo que, de nuevo, ¿qué podía salir mal?

Pues digamos que no recuerdo cómo volvimos al apartamento esa primera noche de las vacaciones y eso me asustó tremendamente.

Seguí tomando alguna bebida cuando salíamos durante el resto de las vacaciones, bebiendo más que si estuviera en casa, pero por lo menos alternándolas a partes iguales con bebidas no alcohólicas.

¿Que me han enseñado estas recaídas? (Porque no iba a lograr nada machacándome a mí misma)

Principalmente que no puedo bajar la guardia, incluso si las circunstancis parecen seguras. Si el pensamiento "¿qué puede salir mal?" se me pasa por la cabeza, debería estar aún más alerta que habitualmente.

Day 84 of 365: Set backs

I haven't written about my 1 year of sober socialising for a while, so here I am.

I have been doing pretty well, but it doesn't take a genius after reading the title to figure out that I had a couple of set backs.

The first, a while ago, after having been out with a friend, sober socialising, we stopped literally a few meters away from home to grab something to it, so I thought it was safe to have a glass of wine. The problem is that I didn't stop at that. I was on my way home, I was eating and I was with a trusted friend. What could go wrong? Not much, but it did. I decided to have a 2nd glass of wine. Luckily it stopped at that.

The next morning I had a terrible hangover, enough to remind me why I'm going this.

It all went ok again after that until I recently went on a holiday with a friend. Again, I started only drinking with food but, what the hell, I'm on holiday, with someone I trust, away from the drama that had prompt me to decide to sober socialise, so, again, what could go wrong?

Well, let's say I don't remember getting to our apartment on the first night of the holiday and that scared the shit out of me.

Still, I did have the odd drink when we went out for the rest of the holiday, more than if I was back home, but still mixing it at least to equal parts with non alcoholic drinks.

What has this taught me? (Because beating myself up about it wasn't going to achieve anything)

Mainly that I can't leave my guard down, even if the circumstances seem safe. If the thought "what could go wrong?" crosses my mind I should stay even more alert than usual.

Día 29 de 365: Amistades y beber

A un día de mi primer mes sin beber socialmente, el papel que las amistades juegan en tu relación con el alcohol me viene en mente.

Me dí cuenta que cuando empecé a decir a mis amistades más íntimas que pensaba que podía tener un problema con el alcohol sus reaciones fueron más o menos estas:
- hombre, eres menudita; claro que te vas a emborrachar más rápido que nosotros
- lo único que tienes que hacer es aprender cuál es tu límite
- nos ha pasado a todos, no le des muchas vueltas
- no estabas tan mal, de verdad
- no te preocupes, nosotros te cuidaremos si te emborrachas (demasiado)

Y una de mis favoritas, si te atreves a decir que no quieres beber en una situación determinada, te dicen:
- ¡no me hagas beber solo!
(¡presión de grupo en su más puro estado!)

La que hizo que finalmente me diera cuenta de que algo no marchaba bien para mi fue:
- estás muy divertida cuanto te emborrachas

Me lo habían dicho alguna vez con anterioridad, pero esta vez no fueron las palabras si no el tono de voz y la frequencia con el que me las dijeron. Cuando me harté de que me lo dijeran, pregunté:
- ¿se puede saber qué hago exactamente que sea tan divertido cuando me emborracho?

Por única respuesta me devolvieron una sonrisa socarrona. ¡Vete tú a saber qué es lo que estarían pensando o queriendo transmitir realmente!

Me sabe mal decirlo, pero si alguna vez te han dado estas respuesta, sal corriendo, aléjate de esta gente.
Ahora me doy cuenta que una amistad verdadera debería haber respondido algo más en la línea de:
- ¿qué es lo que te hacer decir esto?
- o incluso: a pesar de no pensar que tengas un problema con la bebida ¿cómo puedo ayudarte?

En mi humilde opinión, estas son reacciones honestas y que te apoyan. Las anteriores solo enmascaran el hecho que ya les está bien que sigas bebiendo. Los motivos para ello quizás, los trataré en otro artículo.

Tal y como ya dije con anterioridad, si tus amigos te presionan a que sigas bebiendo, no son tus amigos. Y ya puestos, si no te apoyan en tu decisión de beber menos o dejarlo por completo (sea cual sea tu decisión) estas no son las amistades adecuadas para ti en este momento de tu vida. Y punto.

Day 29 of 365: Friends and drinking

Short of a day for my first month without social drinking, the matter that friends play in your relationship with alcohol is playing in my mind.

I found that when I started voicing my concerns to my close friends about having a problem with alcochol, their reactions were in the region of:
- sure, you are only small; of course you are going to get drunk faster than the rest of us
- you just need to learn what your limit is
- we all have been there, don't worry to much about it
- you weren't that bad, honestly
- don't worry, we will look after you if you get (too) drunk

And one of my all favourites, if you annouce you don't want to drink on a certain situation, they'd be like:
- don't make me drink on my own!
(talk about peer pressure!)

The red flag for me was:
- you are really funny when you are drunk

I had been told that before, but this time around it was not only the words but the tone they were said and the frequency they said them to me. When I got fed up with it, I enquired:
- what exactly do I do when I'm drunk that it's so funny?

The only answer I got was a smirk. Go figure!

I'm sorry to say, but if these are the answer you are getting, run a mile from these people.

Now I see that a true friend should have responded something in the lines of:
- what makes you say that?
- or even: despite of not thinking you have a drinking problem, how can I help?

In my humble opinion, these are honest, supportive reactions. The former ones only mask the fact that it suits them that you keep on drinking. The reasons for it probably will make for another post.

Like I said before if your friends are pushing you to drink, they are not your friends. Or for that matter, if they don't support you cutting down or giving it up drinking (whatever you choose to do), they are not the right friends for you at this point in your life. End of.

Día 14 de 365: 2º fin de semana sin beber socialmente

Pues mi segundo fin de semana sin beber socialmente casi ha terminado.

Debo admitir que bebí un vaso de vino blanco con mi almuerzo el viernes, un capricho que me resisto a abandonar. Como normalmente, me sentí con ganas de dormir después por lo que completé mi capricho con mi siesta habitual de los viernes por la tarde. Me levanté descansada y lista para lo que el fin de semana tuviera que ofrecer.

Fui a mostrar mi apoyo a una amiga que ha empezado a presentar karaoke en un bar. Pedí una tónica doble (¡sin ginebra!) y al principio me sentí muy incómoda, como si todo el mundo me estuviera mirando. A medida que la noche avanzó empecé a sentirme más cómoda, hablando con gente conocida y por conocer.

Cuando me preguntaron "¿Por qué no cantas?", respondí "Porque no bebo" a lo que obviamente siguió "¿Y por qué no bebes?" a lo que respondí "Porque conduzco". "Ah, conducir es el mejor motivo para no beber" o algo parecido, me contestaron. No discutí.

No estoy preparada, ni creo que fuera el lugar o el momento adecuado, para empezar a contar a extraños sobre mi desafío 365.

Me pedí mi segunda "tónica doble" la cual normalmente empieza a tener un sabor desagradable pero me sorprendió que me supo bastante bien. Llegué a casa, dormí como un lirón y me desperté la mañana siguiente bastante temprano... ¡sin resaca! Con todo el día por delante. ¡Vaya cambio!

Esa noche una compañera de trabajo me habían invitado a una barbacoa. También conduje. La excusa perfecta. Bebí cerveza no-alcohólica (nota a mí misma: ¡evita esta marca en futuro!).

Esta mañana tenía una caminata solidaria de 3 kilómetros a beneficio de AFOL (la Asocación de Familias Oncohematológicas de Lanzarote) e incluso ¡me desperté antes de que la alarma sonara! Me está gustando estos días "sin resaca".

Por ahora, si hasta ahora es indicativo de como va a ir todo esto, me estoy empezando a preguntar por qué no hice esto hace años.

Day 14 of 365: 2nd weekend of sober socialising

Well, the second weekend of sober socialising is practially over.
I must admit I had a glass of white wine with my lunch on Friday, a treat that I resist giving up. As usual, I feel quite sleepy afterwards, so to finish up my treat, I have my little Friday afternoon nap. Woke up refreshed and ready to take on the weekend.

I went to support a friend who has landed a gig presenting karaoke at a bar. I order a double tonic water (without gin!) and I felt quite unconfortable at first, felt all eyes were on me. But as the night progressed, I felt more at ease, chatted to people, known & unknown.

When I was asked "Why are you not singing?", I replied "Because I am not drinking" which was followed obviously by "Why are you not drinking?" to which I replied with extremely ease: "Because I'm driving". "Oh, you are driving, that is a good reason if there ever was one", or something to that effect, I was told. I didn't argue.

I am not ready, nor I think it's the right time or place, to start telling strangers about my 365 challenge.

I had a second helping of a "double tonic water", which normally starts tasting unpleasant but to my surprise it tasted quite nice. Got home, slept like a baby and woke up the next morning quite early... not hangover! With the whole day ahead of me. What a change!

That night I had been invited to a BBQ with some work colleagues. I was also driving. Perfect excuse. Drank non-alcoholic beer (note to self: avoid this brand in future!).

This morning I had a 3km charity walk in aid of AFOL (a local cancer charity) and I even woke up before the alarm went off! I'm liking this "non hangover" days.

All in all, if so far is anything to go by I'm starting to wonder why didn't I do this years ago.

Día 7 de 365: El primer fin de semana sin beber socialmente

Una amiga a la que había confesado mi decisión de no beber alcohol socialmente durante un año me preguntó: "¿Cuándo es tu primer desafío en el frente social?"

Madre mía, ni siquiera lo había pensado. "El fin de semana, supongo", respondí.

Las cosas no fueron tal y como las había planeado pero quizá fue una bendición encubierta. Al final fui a una obra de teatro con dos amigas - no hay mucho riesgo de toparse con bebidas ahí. Luego, sí, fuimos a tomar algo.

Afortunadamente para mí, una de mis amigas no le llama mucho la atención beber y la otra no bebe. Así que no tuve muchos problemas con presión de grupo en mi primera salida.

Cuando aprendía inglés pensaba que la expresión era "pure pressure" (pura presión), en lugar de "peer pressure" (presión de grupo). En el sentido de que era una presión real, seria, mucha presión. Supongo que mi malentendido no iba tan desencaminado.

Si tus amigos te presionan para que bebas, no son tus amigos. Así de simple.

Day 7 of 365: First weekend of sober socialising

A friend I had confided in about my decision not to drink socially for a year asked me: "When is your first challenge on the socialising front?"

Gosh, I had not even thought of that. "The weekend, I guess", I answered.

Things didn't relly go acording to plan, but it was probably a blessing in disguise. In the end I went to a play with two friends -not a lot of rist being around drink there. Then we went for something to drink.

Luckily for me, one of them is not too bothered about drinking and the other one doesn't drink, so I had very little problems with peer pressure on my first outing.

When I was learning English I thought the expression was "pure" pressure as in, real, serious, lots of pressure. Which I guess in a way peer pressure is.

If your friends are pushing you to drink, they are not your friends. As simple as.

Para mis amigos irlandeses soy un peso pluma. Para mis amigos españoles soy una borracha. Bebo la misma cantidad independientemente de con quién esté.

¿Quién tiene la razón, pues?

La verdad es que tanto si soy una alcohólico o no - personalmente, lo dudo mucho - sí que me he dado cuenta recientemente que el alcohol es la raíz de muchos de mis problemas personales. O al menos, los empeora.

Es por esto que he decidido tomar riendas en el asunto y romper el ciclo.

He decidido dejar de beber socialmente y me he prometido a mi misma sólo tomar un baso de vino de vez en cuando si es acompañado de comida.

Me reto a mí misma a hacer esto durante un año, un día a la vez.

Veámos qué sale de bueno.

For my Irish friends, I'm a light-weight. For my Spanish friends, I'm a drunk. I drink the same amount regardless of who I am with.

Who's right, then?

The truth is whether I am an alcoholic or not - I seriously doubt it, personally - I have recently come to realise that alcohol is the root of a lot of my personal problems. Or at least, it makes them much worse.

That is why I have decided to take matters in my own hands and break the cycle.

I have decided to stop drinking alcohol socially and I vowed to myself to only have the odd glass of wine if I'm having a meal.

I'm going to give myself the challenge of doing that for a year, taking one day at a time.

Let's see what good can come out of it.
