My third featured artist is Joe Lifrieri. Joe is a designer and visual artist from New Jersey. He has a unique style where he combines his art and design, which is rad.

I met Joe first through the Crush + Lovely campfire chats, from when he used to work with us. I immediately could tell that this guy was a hilarious guy to know. I met him in person in New York when I visited in August. He’s a fun person to know and work with, so I decided to have him do some art for me as well. I love what he came up with. I asked him the same interview questions I asked my previous featured artists.

What are five words you would use to describe your style?

“Goofy, fun, narrative, sketchy, handmade”

What, or who are your influences for your illustration style?

“The band logos 15 year olds draw on their Biology notebook covers.”

What are your thoughts on the merging of web design and illustration?

“I’m excited that PNG-24 is widely supported now so illustrations don’t have to live inside little boxes and can feel a lot more organic.”

Do you have any insight you’d like to share about your process of creating the artwork you did for Sushi & Robots?

“I was actually really worried at first. I didn’t want to be super obvious about it, so I decided to be really weird and make up a little story. It starts off with the setting of a cheesy Japanese giant monster movie, then turns into a really creepy love story that ends in drinking motor oil alone in a ranch house.”

If you like sushi, what’s your favorite?

“I like to stick with the classics. Spicy tuna or regular tuna.”

If you owned an army of robots, would they be good or evil?

“I’d probably dress them all up as Megaman villains and fight scientists. So yeah, evil.”

Very soon, Joe will be selling t-shirts he designs and even a hardcover bound children’s story he’s writing and illustrating at hugsformonsters.com. My second featured artist is Jon Burgerman. Jon is a British artist and illustrator whose work you will find in games, toys, galleries, and even IKEA stores.

I had the opportunity to meet Jon at one of his art shows in Brooklyn. He was playing in a hilarious music duo called Anxieteam. I’m stoked to be able to have his art featured on my website! I decided to ask Jon the same questions I asked my featured artist last month, and here are his answers.

What are five words you would use to describe your style?

“Wibberly, wobblerly, loopy, swoopy, colourful”

What, or who are your influences for your illustration style?

“Spaghetti and peas and mustard out of a squeezy bottle.”

What are your thoughts on the merging of web design and illustration?

“In the end everything will merge into one giant rubber band ball of love.”

Do you have any insight you’d like to share about your process of creating the artwork you did for Sushi & Robots?

“I drew a picture and coloured it in on the computer.”

If you like sushi, what’s your favorite?

“I’m a vegetarian so I have to order things with cucumber, avocado etc in it. My favourite roll is currently tempura asparagus.”

If you owned an army of robots, would they be good or evil?

“They would be good at being evil. It’s the only way.”

I like retro-looking clocks. I have a couple from Target that look really awesome. However, they’ve sadly bitten the dust. In my search for a new retro-style alarm clock, I found this Crosley Table Alarm Clock Speaker at Urban Outfitters. I loved the look so much so that I ordered it. I love the color, and it suits my bedroom well.

I love all the shops I find on Etsy. This one in particular is pretty awesome: Stuff Made from Stuff. This shop owner takes old bike parts, computer parts, record players, etc. and turns them into functional clocks that look pretty awesome! I particularly like the bicycle wheel clock.

Earlier this year, I began putting together a collection of photographs I had taken of coffee art. I noticed that my collection was growing pretty quickly, so I created a photo blog on Tumblr called Art in My Coffee. Shortly after I launched the blog, Tumblr released their Submissions feature, which made it really easy to accept photos from other people. Through this small project, I have found that it’s pretty fun having a blog where I get to curate some great photos that other people contribute.

As Art in my Coffee slowly grew in popularity among my friends and colleagues, I invited Meagan Fisher to join me as a curator. This was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. She has been keeping the site updated and fresh, which is fantastic since I can get pretty busy sometimes. She has also been finding some really great, high-quality coffee art.

Yesterday, I received a very pleasant surprise: Tumblr featured Art in My Coffee in their Tumblr Tuesday post. I am very excited to have the project featured, and I am amazed at how quickly the blog is growing. I guess it’s pretty clear that people love coffee art.

This awesome litter box I pre-ordered is now shipping, and I’m as excited about it as I would be if I had bought a new MacBook Pro. The reason I feel this way is because of the way it was designed. The ModKat Litter Box’s modern design is especially appealing, because, well, let’s face it. Litter boxes are ugly. This one is not. It also is designed well in the functionality side of things: the opening is at the top and the litter is more likely to fall back down into the box instead of out and all over your floor. They also offer reusable liners, which is a nice green/environmental alternative to using plastic bags. I never knew that I could be this excited about a cat litter box.

Okay, so I’m a little surprised a product like this hasn’t been released a long time ago (at least that I am personally aware of). I’ve seen cases that work double-time as both protectors and chargers. But this is the first solar-powered charger I’ve seen. The NovoThink Solar Surge comes in about 8 colors, and they work for both iPhone 3G and 3G S phones. I tend to not use clunky-looking cases, but this may be worth the exception. I’m all for eco-friendly solutions like these.
