<itunes:summary>Eco-friendly, organic food on the cheap! Sustainable Suppers embraces green, delicious frugality: we cooks up tasty morsels for those of us tightwads who happen to like living on Terra Firma. Saving money - and the planet - shouldn?t mean tofu and ramen noodles every night. We mix high-impact (tiny!) splurges with low-cost staples, making the most out of every morsel of the sustainable, high-quality, seasonal ingredients we source. We ask great chefs the secrets of their ?business kitchens.? (Even the best restaurants go under if they don?t stretch their dollars.) And you don?t need a culinary degree to follow along, just a willingness to think creatively and develop a lusty stove-side manner. We go beyond the kitchen, too, learning from farmers, scientists and authors how to eat well while being green _ how to lower our impact on our planet while heightening the impact to our taste buds. We look forward to serving you _ with frugal, fabulous flavors!</itunes:summary>

Hi! This feed is just an appetizer; allow me to administer the swoon and ply you with devastating thrift and verve. So come catch more frugal flavors!

Jessica Schroeder would look chic and long-legged in a burlap gunny sack. And, with her gifts for sewing, designing and refashioning, she’d make the thing look like a Balenciaga. That’s why I wanted to talk to her today: Jessica is the brains, beauty and benevolent force behind the tumblr What I Wore, wherein she takes pictures of herself wearing thrift store creations that she has put together for about $1.99.

You can click here to listen to our conversation, subscribe up top to hear it in iTunes, or click below to listen to it on this page:

(I’ve had so many views, thanks to Jessica’s fantastic and loyal following, that all the downloads are overwhelming the wee page. Please subscribe to download and listen to the podcast. Thanks! So happy to have you here!)

Sustainable Suppers started off as a food blog: read more about my food philosophy here. (I eat pastured meat, often drink raw milk and soak tons of beans.) Lately, however, I’ve become more and more interested in the frugal flavors that sustain the rest of life. That means focusing as much on what we put on our bodies — such as inexpensive, non-toxic homemade shampoo — as on what we put in them.

Jessica intuitively understands this. Although she started thrifting because she grew up in a frugal family, she continues to do so because it’s a way of reducing waste. She knows this firsthand, having worked as the head designer for a private label company that created jeans and other basics for big-box stores. She told me that while visiting a factory in China, she saw thousands of pairs of jeans thrown out as the factory worked to develop the perfect prototype. Conventional clothing also carries the shadow of pesticides: cotton is the one of the most sprayed crops in the world, to the tune of at least $2.6 billion. That’s billions of dollars worth of poisons going into our water tables, and even though we don’t eat cotton itself, many of us end up eating those pesticides in [...]</itunes:summary>

Angelica Kitchen is a legend in its own thyme. (Bad Holly!) Local and seasonal years before those words became selling points, it has been NYC’s most beloved vegetarian haunt for decades. Angelica has sustained everyone from broke co-eds to East Village hipsters to Sting-n-Trudie with its nourishing, beautiful, unforgettably delicious food.

Today, we talk to its current Queen of Quinoa, Executive Chef Amy Chaplin. She dispenses tips for the home cook, holds forth on frugal flavors and delivers insight into the culture of the restaurant.

Click here to download the podcast. You can also subscribe to get it in iTunes, or just play it by clicking below:

Chef Amy is beautiful, grounded and warm, as far from the image of a screaming hothouse chef as it gets. She really wants people to go home and cook, and to that end, she has started her own blog. It’s fantastic and elegant. Whether you are a vegan or simply want to incorporate more beautiful food into your life, Coconut and Quinoa is a must-read.

So is the Angelica Kitchen cookbook. (As is, according to Amy, this cookbook.) When owner Leslie McEachern released the Angelica cookbook a few years back, I dashed straightaway to the bookstore. I was prepared to do fierce battle over any last remaining copies, the way mothers used to joust over Cabbage Patch Kids at Christmastime in the 1980s. It is foolproof, and it’s geared towards novice and advanced cooks alike. (Amy says new cookbook should be coming out soon. Hurray!)

I make Angelica’s famed cornbread, and dashi, and oden, and ruby kraut, and tagine, and soba sensation sauce…and as I do so, (and digest!) I relive my late teens and early twenties, a [...]</itunes:summary>

Strap in, and bring your appetite!

Hi! This feed is just an appetizer; allow me to administer the swoon and ply you with devastating thrift and verve. (And with regular posts that aren't included in the foodcast, because sometimes a girl just has to eat instead of speak, as any of you who has tried my husband's Moroccan chicken would know...)
So come catch more frugal flavors!
