Sustainable Times returns with a show devoted to the Sustainable Professionals Network, a new group for people in Hamilton working in the field to get together and work together. I am joined by two other founding members of the Sustainability Professionals Network, Maria Topalovic and Liz Nield, to discuss thoughts on the kickoff event from late May, feedback received and plans going forward, including an open planning night on Wednesday July 31st at 7PM at Hamilton City Hall. Liz and I also talk about her work with her company Lura helping organizations incorporate sustainability.

Sustainable Times Podcast – Justin Jones with “Yes We Cannon”

This week on the Sustainable Times Podcast, we are joined by Justin Jones to discuss the “Yes We Cannon” campaign to advocate for a protected bicycle facility to be installed along Cannon Street in time for the 2015 Pan Am Games. Justin gives us his thoughts on the campaign strategy, where they go from here having collected TWO THOUSAND signatures on their petition, and his ideas of how to be an effective advocate. As well, I make myself feel better about not knowing who the new Minister of the Environment is and go off on a rant about climate change and stormwater management in the wake of so many crazy storms and floods. We discuss how sustainability came to be the popular and frequently used term that it is today, the shift from environmentalism to sustainability, comparing sustainability to the community resilience movement, and Michael tells us how he tries to provide his students with a bit of hope mixed in with respectful fear of what is to come and the challenges that lie ahead. I am very pleased to present Episode #1 of the Sustainable Times Podcast! Over one hour on the subject of Sustainability in Hamilton! After a quick intro of the idea behind this podcast, I’m joined by Juby Lee of Green Venture, Environment Hamilton and the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club to talk the latest news on sustainability. Then Peter Topalovic of the City of Hamilton joins me to talk Complete Streets, transportation demand management and more!
