through the upheaval in the past 2 years, there have been several constants that shine – things i wouldn’t have been able to hold so close, or cherish this much. my dad is my anchor and steering wheel (okay – what is a boat’s steering wheel called?). i don’t care if that sounds corny, pollyanna, or over-sappy. i can’t tell you the number of times he’s talked me down off the (proverbial) ledge. i’ve said before that i have no clue how he does it, but he knows JUST the exact words to use to make the other person feel heard, understood, supported, and then challenged. my brother and i just shake our heads.. and then we have to laugh at some of the things that have become family mantras… being “taken to lunch,” eating frogs, moving cheese, remembering who we are…

last summer, my dad showed me where, why, and how to add oil to the lawnmower (trust me – a whole other story). last fall he showed me how to replace a programable thermostat and which buttons to push on the tv remote. he and my mom spent hours and hours and HOURS preparing this new home for the kids and i. one night at 10pm i got a call from him as he was on his way to look at a used washer and dryer set my mom had found on craig’s list. he’s always up for projects big and small that make our house more home; and i’m learning that i can ask.

i’ve had these antique hook things – 4 of them. M, M, S, and C for the kids’ coats and backpacks. i’ve wanted to put them up for at least 3 years, and they sat on a shelf. until i asked my dad if he’d hang them in the laundry room for us. this photo carries more meaning and emotion to me than i could ever reall convey. not only did he hang the hooks, he enlisted sam to help, and gave my son a chance to feel important and purpose-ful.

every time i pass the laundry room, i remember that i’m not in this alone, and i breathe a quiet “thank you”. i love you, daddy.

had a FUN afternoon session on October 31, with newborn xander and his big brothers and sister! xander was having none of the newborn-sleep-thing; i think he was the most alert newborn i’ve met! i love his peaches-and-cream complexion – absolutely beautiful! and, man, is he a sweet little guy! when he did fall asleep, we worked fast and grabbed some cute shots super-fast!

i’ve mentioned how much i love newborns, right? aaah, baby-fix!

thought this would be a good chance to showcase some birth announcement templates (and custom announcements!). here are a couple very simple and clean announcements that show off your beautiful new addition. photography clients, we can customize these – colors, fonts, words, sentiments… whatever you wish!

stockings to stuff, teachers to thank, random gift-givers who drop by with cookies to reciprocate, hard-to-buy-great-aunt-edna to appease……. if you make fruitcake, i will be uber-disappointed. really. this season of giving can be a challenge. i’ve tried keeping a few tidbits on hand to give out, but then i forget they’re there and discover my stash in march…

so. i’m going to let you in on a secret… artscow. yes. arts cow. a printing company. a secret weapon. and a big enabler… they run special sales all the time. right now they have a coupon out for super-cute-sized notepads. $1.99 with shipping included. you can personalize with your own graphics, their grapics, or whatever. here’re a few i whipped together for stocking stuffers and gifts for teachers, friends, the kids’ friends, and maybe one for me…

you do have to register (it’s free), and they do send lots of email. so if you don’t want that, give me a holler, and i can order one for you at a teensy markup. happy thanksgiving, peeps!

most photographers will tell you that doing pics of their own children is a nightmare. and yet we all still try. repeatedly. maybe that means we’re gluttons… or just short-term-memory-impaired. i’ve been wanting to get my kids outside in the leaves for months, and finally got the chance on a cold, dark, rainy, gross november afternoon. we did have fun playing in the leaves… and i didn’t end up screeching at them to “just hold still and smile for ONE picture – why won’t you do this for your MOTHER?!!” ah, well, kids will be kids, and the photographers’ kids are the last to be portrait-ed… happy monday!

oh, I can’t just not show you this……… I love working with families. They’re not easy shots to get (everyone seems to somehow be looking in different directions at ALL TIMES). But it’s not always necessarily THE single photograph that captures me. The relationships are just JOY to observe; I learn so much from every encounter. It really is an honor to get to be a part of a family’s story.

i have a big connection with rainbows; in my head, rainbows symbolize promises. it’s a chance for me to pause amid the noise and motion of life, and soak in the feeling of trust and peace, and then to reaffirm my own promises. the other evening, we happened to look out our back window, and we saw a breathtaking double rainbow. we could see the approaching rain coming across the empty cornfield, and then behind that, the rainbow. there were such vivid colors. we all just stopped short for a moment and stared. of course, then chaos erupted as we scurried to find the camera, find a memory card, run outside and snap the perfect moment-capturing photograph…

of course, the photographic image doesn’t completely get the essence of the moment, or the symbol, but this image does conjure the memory of that moment. i love it for that. happy friday, my friends! i hope you have rainbows.
