One Wrong Move and You’re Dinner: The Grizzly Bear That Stole My Heart

If you ever need a dose of humility, step into grizzly country. These bears are among the most dangerous animals on earth—800 pounds of muscle, standing over six feet tall, built for strength and survival. Every year in North America, 30 to 40 people are attacked after crossing paths with a grizzly, and tragically, two to three lose their lives. 

Grizzlies are the ultimate predator. One wrong move, and you’re dinner.

But it’s a curious thing, isn’t it? How the most formidable creatures can also be the most captivating. That’s how I felt when I learned about Grizzly Bear 399.

A few years ago, my husband and I were planning an anniversary trip to Grand Teton National Park, and that’s when I became introduced to 399. She wasn’t just another bear; she was a local celebrity. I found myself engrossed in articles and photos, even documentaries, eager to spot her as much as the park’s famous landscapes.

Born in 1996, 399 has been known for successfully raising multiple litters of cubs. Her maternal instincts were the stuff of legends—such as teaching her cubs to look both ways crossing. She taught her cubs to stay near people and roads, a safer place from dominant male bears. It was a calculated risk, and it worked. She raised generations of cubs right under the noses of photographers and visitors.

Learning 399’s story sparked an idea for a novel. I grew intrigued by paradox of loving nature; we want to get closer, but sometimes, the best way to love something is to let it be. Give them space, let them be wild.  

The novel that resulted, Capture the Moment, tells the story of Kate Cunningham, a zoo photographer, determined to get a shot of the iconic 399. She gets a reality check from a (ahem, rather good looking) bear management ranger who understands the dangers of human interference. But Kate’s not the only one in the park who wants the first shot at this bear. 

During my trip to GTNP, I saw grizzlies and cubs, all closely monitored by rangers who were trying to keep the bears safe from people, and the people safe from bears. 

So…did I see 399 on my GTNP trip? I saw her daughter, 610, and her cubs. I saw Blondie, another well-known grizzly, with her cubs. But 399 remained elusive. I would’ve loved to have caught a glimpse of her. From a healthy distance, of course.
