Ubuntu 11.04 – Natty Narwhal is out now!, After fresh installation of Ubuntu 11.04, you need to install some basic application and packages to make your system usable, although some nice Apps are installed by default. In this post, you will get some basic and cool tips and tricks, for Ubuntu 11.04, and I assume that ‘it will be helpful for beginner, who has just installed the Ubuntu and wondering – what should I do now? how will I do that in Ubuntu?’, Relax.. everything is simple . if you have any problem/question or you want to recommend something then reply through comments.
Ubuntu 11.04 is a free and open source – Linux Based Distribution, developed for common desktop users. I’ve more than two years of experience with Ubuntu (Since version 9.04). Few days before I’d installed the fresh stable version of Ubuntu 11.04, and finally prepared a list of few tips ‘n’ tricks that may help you in understanding, exploring and customizing Ubuntu as you wanted. Here is my favorite – and probably the best Tips ‘n’ tricks for a novice Ubuntu 11.04 users -

Top 10 collection of cool Tips ‘n’ Tricks for Ubuntu 11.04 users :

#1 : Remove Hard Drive Partition/Volume Icons from Desktop

Open Configuration Editor – hit ALT+F2 , then type gconf-editor and hit Enter. Then go to apps -> nautilus -> desktop and simply uncheck (select the row by double clicking on it) the box that says ‘Volumes Visible’. That’s all you will notice the instant effect, Then just close the window and Enjoy! Your Desktop looks much better now, due to removal of cluttered – drive icons.

#2 : Mount Drives automatically when your computer starts

If you are using Ubuntu along with Windows in dual boot mode, then you may need to access NTFS partition frequently, so it’s not a bad idea to enable auto-mount of hard drive at system startup. PySDM is a simple ‘storage device manager’ application (based on PyGTK) that allows full customization of hard drive mount points. To install you can search for ‘pysdm’ in synaptic package manager or Type the following command(s) given below – at Terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) :

sudo apt-get install pysdm

Then open it from Applications -> System -> Storage Device Manager or simply search for it. Now you are ready to customize it – just select the drive or partitions and click on mount or any other options that you want to configure. Be careful, while tempering with your hard drive, a silly mistake might piss you off.

#3 : Aero Glass Effect in Window Border

You just need to enable metacity opacity (by default opacity value is equal to one, Make it translucent by decreasing its value, less than .7 to get effective level of translucency) settings from the configuration settings. Again, open gconf-editor (hit ALT+F2 , type gconf-editor and press Enter) and go to Apps ->gwd and double click on metacity_theme_opacity row, then change its value (1) to .7 or .5 (something less than 1).

#4 : Try Gnome 3 / Gnome Shell

Gnome 3 (The Next Generation of Desktop) is available through PPA (Personal Package Archive), although if you will install Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 – Natty Narwhal , then your Unity would break and this process is irreversible , so think once! before you do that.

#5 : Switch to classic Gnome 2.3 desktop

Probably, Many of us do not like Unity Desktop, don’t worry, you can use your favorite classic desktop – ‘Gnome 2.3′ on Ubuntu 11.04 without any problem, it is installed by default. You just need to select the classic desktop option at login prompt, to run Gnome Desktop.

#6 : Install Cool Faenza Icons

Don’t you like cool icons on your desktop, I think so (with the Assumption that you are a Human! ). Install Faenza icons from the command line – Then select it from Theme customize options (Appearance -> Themes, then customize any theme to use Faenza Icons and save the theme).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install faenza-icon-theme

#7 : Unlock Root in GUI mode

Although it’s not required because you can do the administrative task using sudo command, but – just for fun! if you want to enjoy root power in GUI mode then there is a simple trick to unlock root in Ubuntu 11.04. But you have to be – very careful while using Ubuntu as root, because a small mistake may break the system.

#8 : Tweak Ubuntu 11.04 settings as you want

Ubuntu is a free and open source OS, so it’s 100% customizable. If you want to tweak ubuntu settings then use some tools/utility like Ubuntu Tweak for customizing Ubuntu 11.04. Ubuntu Tweak (a free and open source application) will allow you to configure Ubuntu in easy way.

#9 : Configure Boot options – Grub

Install a simple utility - StartUp Manager, to customize the GRUB and splash screens, in GUI mode. The command is -

sudo apt-get install startupmanager

#10 : Move the Windows buttons to Right Corner

If you have the habit of using Maximize, Minimize and Close buttons in Right Corner, then you should change default windows button layout of Ubuntu 11.04. Open gconf-editor (hit ALT+F2 and enter ‘gconf-editor’) and go to apps -> Metacity -> General and select button layout field (Double click on the row) and change the default value to -
menu:maximize,minimize,close

Things To Do After Installing New Ubuntu 11.04 'Natty Narwhal'

Ubuntu 11.04 has been released and many of you may have already upgraded or installed the latest version. While trying the new Unity interface, you may be wondering how to customize and optimize it to suit your needs. So here is our Ubuntu 11.04 Customization Guide.

Update Your System and Install Necessary Packages

Go to update manager and fully update your system.
If your system does not support 3D hardware acceleration and if you want have Unity as your default interface, install Unity-2D by running following commands: sudo apt-get install unity-2d
Now just logout and select Unity-2D in session menu.
You will be prompted to install new drivers available for your system. If not just hit the Ubuntu Button and type Additional Drivers. Click on the first result and install wireless, graphic drivers as required.

Ubuntu Installer lets you install some necessary codecs right from the beginning. But If haven't checked the option, you can now install all the necessary packages using following command: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Install Ubuntu Tweak if you want to tweak some of the Gnome settings. Ubuntu Tweak is also a good source for adding third party PPAs in one click. You can install the latest version for Natty from here.

Customizing the Interface

Unity automatically detects whether to display dash in full screen mode or not depending on screen resolution. You can easily change this behavior. First install dconf-tools by running following commands: sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
Now hit Alt+F2, type in dconf-editor and hit enter key. Go to Desktop > Unity and change the form factor to Desktop or Netbook as per your requirement.

Don't close dconf-editor yet. Systray or Notification Area has been disabled in Unity for all except a few application. To enable it just add an extra string 'all' under Desktop > Unity > Panel as shown in screenshot below (requires a logout to work). If you don't want to enable it for all applications, just add the name of your application you want to have a systray icon. To revert, just click on 'Set to Default'

Install Compiz Config Settings Manager (CCSM) from Software Center to get all the desktop effects you are used to - wobbly windows, desktop cube, window previews and so on
You can fully customize launcher behavior, launcher size, panel transparency, dash blur etc under Unity Plugin in CCSM

Create a 'Show Desktop' Icon. I have been using Unity since Alpha 3 was out but always missed a Show Desktop launcher as sadly there is no way to minimize multiple open windows in Unity in one click. So I have created a launcher for that using an awesome keystroke and mouse input simulation tool - xdotool. Just install it from Software Center and follow the instructions below.
Create a new launcher by right clicking on desktop and move it to any folder. Under name type in 'Show Desktop' and under command enter following - xdotool key Control+Alt+d
Choose any image for your launcher and just drag and drop it on Unity Launcher. Now you have your own show desktop launcher. The only problem with this launcher is that you cannot make two successive clicks as the icon starts pulsating for like 5 seconds. But it works. Customized Themes for Ubuntu 11.04

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal has been released and the servers were really busy last night. We have covered different aspects of Ubuntu 11.04 and its default interface Unity so far. Now we think its time for some more eyecandy stuff for Unity. Talking of Unity, it is itself a great interface with cool looks and enhanced usability. We dont care about what people say but we believe that Unity is the ‘Next Big Thing’. People always resist to adopt something new but after hey get familiar with it, they very well accept it and yet love it. So, coming back to the topic, we have collected a few Themes for your Ubuntu 11.04 Desktops to make them look really cool. Here we go -

Equinox Themes

Equinox Themes are available to install for Ubuntu 11.04 users via a PPA repository. Open a terminal & run :-

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-equinox faenza-icon-theme equinox-theme

Now sit back and relax.

Equinox Light

These are one of the most suitable themes for Ubuntu IMO. They are cool, shiny and light and use Faenza icon theme making them a perfect theme pack for Unity Desktop.

Orta Theme

Orta GTK is a modified GTK2 theme for Ubuntu desktops. This theme looks really really good in Unity with Faenza icons and a grey-black transparent Unity-Panel is just perfect.

Use the following PPA to install Orta on your Ubuntu 11.04 desktop.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orta-theme orta-emerald-decorators

Now, just right-click, and select Orta theme and see the magic. You will need Faenza icon theme to achieve the desired looks.

Elementary Unity Theme

Install the Icon Theme

Use this PPA to install Elementary Icon theme to install Elementary Icon themes in Ubuntu 11.04.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementaryart/elementarydesktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install elementary-icon-theme

and done.

NOTE – The theme requires Murrine engine. To install required Murrine engine download the source from here, extract the package and go into its directory in a terminal window and run:-

./configure –prefix=/usr –enable-animation
make
sudo make install

To install Nautilus Elementary, run following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and finally restart nautilus with:

nautilus -q

and done.

Divergence IV Theme

Download Here

Download the file and extract it. Browse to the extracted file and double click install.sh and run it. Install it and set preferences and enjoy the theme. Again, you will need Faenza icon theme to achieve the desired looks.

The Poplist with the Ettes

The Ettes fourth album Wicked Will came out last week and it’s a storming blast of garage rock goodness. Unlike on their previous album, Do You Want Power, Coco, Jem, and Poni have no time for tricky things like subtlety or artistic growth, they storm through the songs with a furious sense of purpose and power, barely pausing for breath as they lay waste to lame and unreliable boyfriends There’s no doubt that the Ettes are ruling the garage rock scene right now and that made them prime candidates for the Poplist.

Coconut Water
Poni is a huge fan. It’s so beautiful and delicious, and has electrolytes, and is extremely refreshing. Poni is accepting imaginary spokesperson offers from coconut water companies, because Rihanna is plastered all over New York City propping the drink, but Poni says she isn’t the only Caribbean female musician who loves coconut water, so bring it!

Coco and Poni challenge you to find better dialogue (“better” as in “entertaining”) than that in this slow, strangely-edited ’80s television program. And as American Apparel and Black Swan clearly prove, dancewear never goes out of style, it only gets more and more appealing. Coco can’t dance but this show makes her think she can. And that is something.

Jem recently found a Chinese take-out joint in Nashville that has authentic New York style Chinese food. It took him three years, but he found it. This was probably the most exciting day of his Nashville existence. Jem was raised on this stuff; it’s in his blood. All New Jersey Jews can say that. It’s called China Spring, and if you’re craving Chinese food while in Nashvegas, we highly recommend it.

It was the only game that came with the van for this tour, so Poni got involved. Poni knows little about video games that aren’t arcade games — and even less about basketball — which makes it even more fun to learn. Like a new language. All I know is, Curry, you’re off the team!
