This special GT styling package is currently offered to owners of the Suzuki Splash who want to spice up their little hatchback in certain market regions.

At this price segment these bits of kit probably do not offer any aerodynamic benefits at all, but almost every car looks better with a little diffuser-ish design on the rear bumper to help it look less fat, especially with increasingly strict crash test regulations bloating those bumpers up.

Suzuki SX4 and SX4 Sedan facelift revealed in China

Changan-Suzuki, Suzuki’s auto arm in China has launched the facelift version of the Suzuki SX4 and SX4 Sedan for the Chinese market. The facelift consists of a redesigned bumper, revised grille, concave surfaces above the fog light, as well as a new skid-plate at the rear of the hatchback. The facelift also matches the 2010 SX4 for the European market.

The Suzuki SX4 facelift range also comes with a slightly updated interior and a revised GPS navigation system. Please continue reading to view an image gallery.

Suzuki Swift now with keyless entry and start

Suzuki Malaysia Automobile Sdn Bhd have updated their Suzuki Swift for the 2009 model year. The locally assembled Swift retails at RM 73,788.00 OTR with insurance and comes in 5 colours, including Bayside Blue, Silver Grey, Supreme Red and Tranquility Black as well as one new colour – Superior White.

Suzuki has basically added 2 features – a keyless entry and start system, and auto-retractable side mirrors with integrated signal indicators. The keyless entry system allows you to open the door via pressing a button on the door handle, and the keyless engine start is not unlike Latio’s where you turn an ignition knob, not as sexy as a start button but it works. Its primarily to allow you to access and start the car without having to take out the key fob from your pocket or in the case of ladies, your handbag.

The rest of the car should remain largely the same – a 1.5 liter DOHC engine with variable valve timing producing 101hp at 6,000rpm and 133Nm of torque at 4,000rpm mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, good cute but perhaps now dated looks and one of the best handling and fun factor in its class.

	The Swift Sport isn’t a paragon of front-wheel-drive finesse, but you get out of it grinningkkk

Try to think of a Suzuki car and you’ll probably think of something like a Wagon R. And I’m fairly sure that the thought of this Driven didn’t get you as excited as the prospect of reading about a new Renault or CitroΫn hatch. Yet the Suzuki Swift is currently holding first and third places in the Junior World Rally Championship, and the company that builds it also makes arguably the best superbikes on sale today.

So can the new Swift Sport raise the profile of Suzuki’s cars? Well, first impressions are good. A rear wing, deeper bumpers and twin tailpipes are all regulation add-ons, but sometimes sporting models look as though they’ve had such appendages thrown at them, possibly from a great height. Not so the Swift Sport, which carries off its new appearance with aplomb, looking neat and cohesive.

Entry is keyless, so the big lump of a ‘key’ need do nothing more than create an embarrassing bulge in your pocket. (Curiously, though, starting is still achieved by twisting something on the steering column.) Inside, it all feels well screwed together and the steering wheel is just the right size. The needle on the rev-counter even swings round from a six o’clock starting position as it would on a GSX-R.

The 1.6-litre twin-cam VVT engine (which forms the basis of the rally car’s engine) spins into life with a light zizz before settling to a busy idle. It puts out 123bhp at 6800rpm and 109lb ft at 4800rpm, and, as you might guess from those figures, it does its best work at the top end of the rev range. Indeed, it’s typically Japanese in that it wants to be thrashed and never makes what you’d call a deep-chested sound. The throttle response is sharp, particularly at the top of the pedal’s travel, which helps make the Swift feel more urgent than it really is at low revs.

Set off and there’s a Mini-like wheel-at-each-corner feeling. The ride is much better than a Mini’s would be on 17in wheels, however, the Swift Sport soaking up some truly appalling roads.

And then you go for a corner, only to discover that the Swift’s turn-in is seriously lacking bite. And although the steering is well weighted, it offers no detail about what the Eagle F1s may or may not be doing. It’s all a bit unnerving at first, but take the time to learn how the Swift wants to be driven and it can be huge fun.

Faster corners are easy – just turn in a bit earlier and the Swift stays flat and poised throughout. In tighter corners it takes more bullying. Don’t take the initial signs of understeer as the end of play; instead add more lock and stay with it, because then the chassis really starts to dig in, finding much more grip than you thought possible.

And once you’re really leaning into the corner you can play with the throttle. For best effect you want to be up in the big numbers on the rev-counter. Once there, lift-off oversteer becomes your new best friend, especially in the wet. It’s hilarious, with the short wheelbase feeling very lively but never really scary, although you can understand why Suzuki makes you press the ESP button for quite some time before it disengages.

The Swift Sport isn’t a paragon of front-wheel-drive finesse, but you get out of it grinning. You can imagine just how much fun it would be punting one along in the JWRC. With group nine insurance you really can’t ask for much more.

It could even mean that a few people might think of something other than a Grand Vitara when you mention four wheels and Suzuki.

Suzuki Swift a solid choice for running around town

When you go to the grocery store these days, you're expected to take your own bags, preferably woven from something organic like hemp, as your small personal contribution to saving the planet from the impact of those nasty plastic disposables.

But if you want to take your enviro-consciousness a step further, you could carry those bags of naturally grown produce, green tea and tofu steak home in a neat little shopping cart like the Suzuki Swift+.

I'm not being in any way disparaging here in comparing the bright-red subcompact Swift+ S I spent a week with recently to one of those wire baskets on wobbly wheels we're all so familiar with, even though in automotive terms it is a very basic conveyance.

In fact, it's just that aspect of its character that makes it such a solid choice for those who are beginning to feel an SUV or crossover isn't really required for an around-town runabout/grocery-getter or economical commuter, and who haven't been suckered in by the hybrid hype.

A small four-seater, cargo-versatile hatch like the Swift+, with its low entry price, easy-to-park size, fuel economy and enough creature comforts to make driving at least tolerable, makes eminent sense, particularly as a second vehicle that would allow you to make more limited use of something bigger and more suitable for family duties.

Suzuki's back-to-basics Swift+ may not have all the amenities you might want in its features and equipment repertoire, but it does give you all that you really need, in a handy five-door hatchback package that was restyled and significantly updated mechanically for 2009 – hence the “+” it now has affixed after its name.

The fifth-generation Swift first appeared in 2005 as a collaborative design between GM Daewoo Auto & Technology in South Korea and Japan-based Suzuki and the latest example the Swift+ can also be found wearing badges that identify it as a Chevrolet Aveo and a Pontiac G3 Wave.

A base manual gearbox Swift+ starts at $14,495. My test car was an S, which lists at $16,795 and comes with four-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning.

Standard equipment includes: AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and input jack audio system, digital clock, tilt steering column, height-adjustable driver's seat, floor mats, vanity mirrors in the sun visors, cup holders, day/night mirror, front and side airbags, rear wiper and defroster. You have to adjust the mirrors and wind up the windows manually.

The Swift+ is decidedly small, but its four doors allow easy access to a rather Spartan rear seat that will hold two without causing actual physical or emotional distress (three if either of those isn't a consideration).

And under that rear hatch there is 200 litres of grocery bag room with the rear seat up and, with its 60/40 split seatbacks folded, a very useful 1,190 litres.

The front seats don't offer much in the way of lateral support but are comfortable enough and the height adjuster on the driver's side and the tilt wheel means you can set up a proper driving position.

The left seat locates the driver behind a fat-rimmed wheel that frames a basic four-dial instrument array and within reach to the right a centre stack with a CD audio system up top and a trio of round dials for the climate control system below.

All-round visibility is excellent, cruising speed noise levels actually quite good and ride acceptable, although a bit more shock control would be nice over rough pavement.

The test car came in various shades and textures of grey plastic and fabric alleviated by some shiny silver trim touches inside. Yes, it's all rather utilitarian, but not nasty-cheap looking and livable enough.

On the mechanical side, the Swift+ is about what you'd expect of a small car aimed at the North American market these days. In other parts of the world, it can be ordered with 1.2-, 1.3- and 1.5-litre engines, but we get the big-bore unit, the 1.6-litre latest development of GM's Ecotec overhead-cam four. This smooth, quick-revving and not too intrusive sounding powerplant makes 106 hp at 6,400 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm.

The four-speed automatic translates this into verging on lively levels of performance (via the front wheels) that make it capable of dicing in city traffic and merging or passing without drama, if you leave yourself enough room. Fuel economy ratings are 8.2 L/100 km city and 5.8 highway.

The Swift+ has front-disc/rear drum power brake,s a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle with a steel wheel and P185-60R14 all-season tire mounted on each corner. Pretty wimpy, but the power steering system has reasonable feel and the car is quite responsive and agile around town.

Push it a bit and you'll certainly soon notice body roll, under-steer and a general lack of grip, in that order, but it's generally well behaved and won't do anything untoward, or unexpected anyway, despite some oddly choppy ride motion over uneven surfaces.

The Swift+ would be as good a choice as any on a dollar for dollar basis if you're shopping for an urban or suburban runabout or frugal commuter.

In higher grades, the rear seat has a 40/60-split design and a tumble-folding function so it can be configured to create an extended, flat luggage surface on each side. For further convenience, storage spaces for small, personal items are located around the cabin. They include a compartment in the instrument panel, a glove box, front and rear bottle holders, a seatback pocket and front door pockets (large enough for A4-size road atlases).
