on "The Interactive Class" by Joe & Kristen Merrill

to share with teachers this summer.

The authors are sharing a ton of short PD tutorials

on various media platforms.

I created this virtual classroom in less than 15 minutes after
watching a quick PD tutorial on The Merrills EDU YouTube Channel.

Here's the Youtube tutorial I used.... it really is a quick way to use
Buncee

to create a virtual classroom.

I remember "back in the day"...

Like ..... way "back in the day"...

when my planbook used to be colorful and decorated with stickers and colored ink!

Fast forward to the "digital age" where I need to be able to access my plans from many different devices at home and at school....

...and HOW frustrated I get when I "think" I put the planbook in my backpack to bring home, but instead left it on my teacher table for the next day ... just in case I get sick and need it for a sub!

Well...NO MORE... I love using planbook.com...it allows me to share plans with my team and access from ANY device at home or school...
...however...it doesn't allow me to "pretty it up"....

I joined the newsletter and am so glad I did! So many ideas and shares! Plus lots of freebies!

I purchased the goodnotes5 app when it used to be goodnotes 4...like a long time ago and have used it from time to time to take notes and keep track of ideas...

.....but now....I can integrate the notebooks and stickers from @dpcdigitals with the @goodnotesapp to create useful, organizational, and shareable plans that allow me the ability to create fun cute pages!

First Mystery Skype of the Year

Also excited to hear about FlipGrid's new AR feature...LOVE their VoicePod

Took some time this weekend to search IKEA for a similar set up with no luck...well...I found other things I apparently needed...like the hand crank flashlight for $2.99! But no pod that was green and could pop up and down.

So I did a search for pop up pods on Amazon and voila!

Even has a video on how to fold the pod to put it away in the carrying case! What!!!!

Can't wait to see how my new students will use this

I'm excited to share about some of my favorite resources for Augmented Reality and how I use them in the classroom with the teachers attending BCS Techcellence today.

We'll work with Merge Cubes, Quivervision, and HPReveal during the time we have together.

Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Regrouping and the BlueBot

practice subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping.

BlueBots and coding makes it all the more fun!

After students solve the equations,

they'll work together using

arrows to design their codes.

Once their codes are created,

they can use the BlueBot to check their codes.

Use these cards to cut out and create a BlueBot mat

Use the clear graph mat from the BlueBot website.

Use the coding map paper to help place the

equations and solutions on the large mat.

Got the opportunity to learn a little more about these easy to code bots at #ISTE18 this summer. Fell in LOVE with them and was blessed to have a grant funded to have one for my students to explore coding this year. Have you heard of the BlueBots?

#ISTE18 Reflection and Shares Poster Sessions

Several years ago, I was introduced to the idea of the existence of a

VERY large technology conference by an online group of teachers that were NOT

going to the conference. These teachers, led by

Jen Wagner (https://twitter.com/ProjectsByJen),

shared a passion for technology integration and learning more ways to

utilize new ideas in their classroom. My first summer of participating

in the Google+ Community of #NOTatISTE sparked a desire

to actually BE at ISTE someday.

Jump ahead to June 2018 and I am finally getting to

#checkthisoffmybucketlist by attending #ISTE18 in Chicago, IL!

This year’s conference (of more than 18,000 attendees), took place at the

massive McCormick Place in Chicago, IL.

Thank goodness for maps and wonderful “Ask Me” people posted

in the most convenient places around the building...

it made finding rooms and playground areas so much easier!

According to my iWatch...I walked 15,872 steps for a distance of

6.81 miles on just the first day of the conference alone!

#sweet!

Or should I say #sweat!

And -for the record- this

“car sick getting to the church on the next street” kind of girl

only got mildly sick ONCE on the bus transports to and from the conference.

Thank goodness for essential oils that help keep motion sickness away...

and a person that likes to share ideas and activities they

found during the workshops they attended.

There are several different session types offered during the conference:

Posters, Playgrounds, BYOD, Listen & Learn, Keynote Speeches to name a few.

The goal is to “Choose your Learning Format…”

That was GREATLY appreciated! So….there were no hurt feelings if you moved

onto another session if the session you were in didn’t fit your

#goalsforlearning.

As I reflect on the gagillion of ideas and shares wandering through my brain…

I thought it would be most helpful, for me anyway,

to share ideas and activities I learned about in the different types

of sessions rather than day by day...hope that makes sense.

I’ll try my best to link to the different resources when possible.

AND….so this post doesn’t go on forEVER and a day...

I’ll be spreading out my reflections from the different types of

sessions over several posts...

ONE-because- “ain’t nobody got time to read a long post” and

TWO-because- I have a TON of things roaming my brain...

I’ll need to use my “wand to my thoughts to my pensieve” before sharing...

So...Here we go…

Hope you’re able to gather something that might be useful to you!

POSTER SESSIONS:

This was a very large area of the venue where tables were set up

with projects from all over the globe. You could talk with the presenters

one-on-one, in a small group, or just read the poster and

learn about the ideas being shared.

*100 Word Challenge -

Always trying to get more writing into the week.

This might be something to integrate with Seesaw and

let the kids share and comment on each other’s writing...

*Did you know that FlipGrid is now free for teachers?

Beverly Ladd and I want to incorporate them into the

Global Math Task challenges this year,

so this poster session caught my eye.

I like the simple directions posted for the kids to

use as they create their recordings.

*Using the 4 Cs in video creation.

*Using Augmented Reality in the classroom was a theme through

many of the posters.

I’ve dabbled with HP Reveal and Merge Cube with my students.

LOVE both techs...techtalk shared more information about

using them with students in classrooms.

There were sooo very many more posters sessions to explore.

This area was a little more challenging for me to navigate

as it was VERY loud and had a LOT of people all

trying to see information on a small table.

Those who had information posted and rather larger were the tables

I gravitated towards so I could read the information and ask

questions if I had them. Valuable gains made from the different sessions

over the three day trek through technology genius.

Shares from Seesaw Connect in Chicago #ISTE18

Traveling during the summer to “share the learning” is one of my favorite things to do!

Well...mostly...I love the sharing more than the traveling…

I’m not much on the “traveling part”...

I’d rather be able to twitch my nose and pop to my destination,

but IF you have to do the traveling part, having a

teacher-tech-ready-to-give-it-a-shot traveling companion is THE best!

First stop on this summer’s list of learning was my very first ever Seesaw Conference…

Seesaw Connect took place in Chicago’s ‘Morgan’s on Fulton’ lovely venue.

An older building...3 stops on the L-train...outside of downtown Chicago.

Seesaw organizers used every- single- floor to take advantage of this amazing

building’s space! From the basement to the rooftop, participants were provided

opportunities to connect, share ideas, and get information on topics

they were interested in learning more about!

The day started off with an Amazing Race that my friend’s team won!

While people were teaming up and racing around,

there were areas set up to “Bling” your name tag and take a group photo…

The photos could be texted to our phones right away! Too cool!

Next we met in the gathering space for the Ignite Sessions

on the second floor! (Where -I might add- I first saw the GOOGLE

office building right next door! What?!?)

Ignite sessions are 5 minutes of jam-packed shares from various teachers,authors, and

creators of Seesaw… They have a limited number of slides to get their “story”

across while speaking.

was a great way to start the day!

Sophia Garcia Smith shared about my favorite way to get students commenting the

“right way” on Seesaw with her idea of T-A-G! I enjoyed hearing from her tell

how she not only has the kids practice digital citizenship this way, but also expects a TAG

from the parents. AND...learning that she doesn’t expect kids to do ALL of the

3 letters in one comment was a relief!

After the ignite sessions were finished, we broke into “job-a-like” breakout sessions.

I had the pleasure of facilitating the Fourth Grade group of teachers.

It was great to be able to share how we used Seesaw in our classrooms as

well as share some resources and suggestions on more ways to use

Seesaw with Science in our rooms.

Lunch was served on the rooftop with areas of shade as well as

sun and beautiful views of the Chicago Cityscape. There were large table

games like Connect Four that make me want to get one for

my classroom to #setthestagetoengage !

After lunch, the breakout sessions began on all four floors.

I was honored to be among the presenters sharing information with the group.

Exploring Augmented Reality with the Merge Cube

If you’ve ever experimented with augmented reality with your students,
you’ve had that feeling of wonder and excitement take over your room!

I have used QR codes and the Aurasma App with my students in the past.
Both are engaging and “totally rad” experiences for my

“technothirsty learners”.

This year we’re exploring the augmented reality using the

Merge Cube

Merge cubes are small, foam created cubes that can transform into many different experiences all with the click of an app!

I was lucky enough to find these unique little gems at my local Walmart on clearance for $1.00 each :)

I've also noticed them at Target for about $15.00 and on Amazon (linked above) for $6.00.

But if you just want to try them out before you purchase them,

you can head over to Jamie Donally's post and get a

free printout from

the Merge VR company.

You might find some glitches with the print out, but it’s worth

a try if you’re “itching” to explore the possibilities

for this augmented reality

resource in your room!

So...how have my students been using

this piece of technology to share their learning?

….right now we’re in the “exploration stage”

of our Merge Cube experiences…

this means my students are using the

different free apps available and exploring

what the technology can help the do.

Here’s some of their discoveries…

For Earth Day, they worked with partners to snap a

picture of each other holding the earth in their hands.

Since the app doesn’t allow picture taking at this time,

they decided they would take a screenshot and

crop their picture to the size that would work for their creation.

We can use these pictures in future projects…

Poetry about protecting the Earth.

Smash with PicCollage and create an acrostic poem.

Share ways to protect the Earth in Seesaw with audio and labels.

Check out this giant Merge Cube tutorial from Mr. Haydu.

My students enjoyed working with it to get the augmented images larger to snap their photos...but also mentioned that it was harder to play the games where the cube had to be manipulated to move things on the screen.

We’ll be exploring more with this technology in the future, for sure!

Classkick for the Win!

I absolutely love using Classkick with my students!

Not only does it help save on paper...

but it encourages them to create and share their thinking with technology!

This is one device hopping program that helps me meet the needs of my students at their level...

and it is soooo very easy to create assignments using

powerpoints and task cards that I already have!

Mystery Number Skype #connectingtosharelearning

I am a HUGE supporter of getting students to

Connect to share the Learning!

It's one of the biggest reasons I helped start "The Global Math Task Twitter Challenge"

with Beverly Ladd!

As a new Math & Science only teacher, I struggled with letting go of

Mystery Location Skyping

(...mostly because I couldn't find a math or science standard to support our time being spent finding classes on a map using mapping skills :-)

.... I crave the ability for my students to be able to

connect with students in other states and countries to share ideas and learning.

Enter...Mystery Number Skype!

I tried for several months to find another class to join in this

adventure of using number sense and math skills to figure out a mystery number...

No Joy!

Until.... I spied another teacher in Kansas on the Google+ community !
She was in search of a 4th grade class to try Mystery Number Skypes too!

YEAH!

This week we were able to connect our classes

(after some techie troubles)

And discovered some great math talk and shares going on in our rooms as

we guided the students through their first Mystery Connection.

My kiddos are HOOKED!

They are coming up with more questions that would help them filter through the

numbers to discover mystery numbers for our next meeting.

We're looking forward to continuing to connect and share our

experiences with our new friends in Kansas!

Maybe we'll even get to share a little more about

our schools and surrounding areas as we continue to meet!

I created some slides in Google Slides to help the kids keep track of their

number clues...

I put all of the slides into a Classkick assignment

Students were able to toggle through the slides in the

Classkick assignment as we were skyping and make notes.

We're wrapping up our unit on division.

Created some videos to help students refer back to and review each strategy we shared.
