Despite a little ish caused by Lagos traffic that almost made us late for Joy's wedding on her traditional day,and by God's grace we were able to give a satisfactory service.....

So not long after Joy's wedding, we got another call from the sisters say Faith is going to get married as well and she'd have none other but Swan Beauty, and guess what? Her wedding day happened to be my birthday, yet she still wanted Swan Beauty. Well, since our passion lie in the joy and satisfaction of our clients, i didn't bulge, we had a deal.

We present to you Omoloro, a beautiful, and lovely lady.Never seen a bride so calm and trusting, she trusted we'd give her the best in services even when all seemed not going well with the crazy traffic on the day before her wedding, some of her vendors couldn't make it down to the venue early, but she remained calm, while I fixed her hair, as at 8:30pm the previous night, her nail was not yet done. At the end of the day, the hair, makeup and nails were superb!

Here are some of the pictures from the training, they are many.

The first day was really fun. All the students were welcomed to the class by the CEO od Swan Beauty: Miss Okubanjo Funmilayo Omosewa. In here welcoming speech, she gave a short story on how she started out and her experience so far in the business.

Classes commenced with the theory, hand outs were distributed to aid fast learning and for referrals after the training. Skin types, Facial shapes and features, colours and combinations, types of makeup and there was useful information about makeup products, the tools of the trade and their functions.

At the end of the class the students had gathered enough knowledge, so they were told to get prepared for their test, the motivational talk and practical the next day!

Good day family! Bringing to you the plan on how the training would go! Like we said it's a full training not a workshop! So get ready to go back to school (if you are done with school) Heheheheh!
Classes commence on Monday the 18th of March 2013 by 10am prompt with a welcoming speech by the CEO Swan Beauty. Training starts (Theory with the given hand outs) by 10:10am - 12pm and break for 10mins, theory classes with little demonstrations continues till 2pm.
Tuesday 10am tests on the theoretical aspects learnt the previous day by 10am - 10:30am, Practical classes begin by 10:30am with the teachers taking the lead, showing the students the 'how tos' of the different looks and giving them reasons and then students take over (under strong supervision by the teachers) till 12pm then break time for 10mins. Training continues by 12:10pm with the motivational talk by one of Nigeria's best, speaking on 'how to start and grow a young business' *keep your fingers crossed*. Makeup practical continue from 12:40pm till 2pm. Wednesday and Thursday are practical classes continues with break time in between. Then Friday is the examination day when all the looks taught in class will be tested under strict timing.
N.B: Training materials will be provided for all to be used in class.
There is a good surprise for the best student the theory and in the practical examination.

Some helpful Swan Beauty tips

Apply Mascara to your eyelashes before applying false lashes to allow them stick properly.

A cream blush should be applied over the foundation before the powder, so that the creamy effect is softened by the matte powder.

Try to dampen your foundation sponge or wedges before use so that it sucks in less of your foundation.

Make thin eyes appear larger by apply applying a thin line of white eyeliner just in the inner corner of the lower lash.

It was Joy Olopha's day! A bright and beautiful day but not without the traffic and the sun so hot it was pricking our skin as we (myself and my assistant) made our way to her house for the traditional. We got there in good time and started out our work, she did the Benin Traditional outfit but it was a bit different and finer- a burnt orange skirt and blouse with the traditional beads like a small jacket; the hair was so beautifully made in a big fat bum with some beads round it.

This was during the makeup, while priming her eyes...........

And this was when we finished applying the eye makeup, before giving her lips the tangie orangie plum.......

For the white wedding, Joy had a simple look, but we gave strength to her most beautiful facial feature - her eyes, while we reduced the lip colour!

Moisturizing For All Skin Types

The Skin is the largest organ of the body because it covers all the parts of the body and its thickness varies according to its location and function in the different parts of the body. For instance, the skin that surrounds the feet is thicker that the one on the face. Also, the skin around the eyes is thinner than the one covering the other parts of the face.

Even though it heals and renews itself constantly, there is need for the skin to be properly hydrated so that it is smooth and soft.

Moisturizing the skin is a vital step in skin care as it helps to hydrate, soften and improves skin barrier. Moisturizers not only increase the skin's water content, but they also protect the skin and encourage an orderly desquamation (shedding) process that makes the skin appear more smooth. They contain the emollients that that serve these purposes. The ways the different moisturizing ingredients work can be majorly grouped into two (2)

Occlusives: These work by forming a thin barrier or film on the surface of the skin (Epidermis) to prevent any loss of moisture especially when skin is exposed; they include paraffin, lanolin, petroleum and mineral oil

These ingredients also function as emollient because they also help repair the damage done by peeling skin cells or rough ones, making the skin soft and smooth.

Humectants: These attract water from the air to moisturize the skin cells, thereby making the skin firm, with the appearance of less wrinkles, they also they help to soften and hydrate scaly or thick skin; they include alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, salicylic acid, glycerine and propylene glycol.

We have other ingredients that can be contained in a moisturizer as they effective help to reducing the signs of aging:

Sunscreen: Moisturizers should have sunscreen to protect from the harmful effects of the UV rays like wrinkles, sunburn etc.

Retinol: This is one of the best anti aging ingredient which prevents wrinkles, improves pigmentation and textures, treats acne and heals scars.

Classes of Moisturizers:

Ointments: are semi-solid greases that help to hydrate the skin by preventing water loss. Petroleum jelly has no additional ingredients, whereas other ointments contain a small proportion of water or other ingredients to make the ointment more spreadable. Ointments are very good at helping the skin retain moisture but they are often disliked because of their greasiness. It is best for people with dry skin.

Creams: are thick mixtures of greases in water or another liquid. They contain a lower proportion of grease than ointments, making them less greasy.

Lotions: are mixtures of oil and water, with water being the main ingredient. Most lotions do not function well as moisturizers for people with dry skin conditions because the water in the lotion evaporates quickly. It is suitable for those with oily skin.

Moisturizing: For all Skin Types.

Dry skin: For treating skin dryness, the most appropriate moisturizers are heavier, oil-based moisturizers that contain ingredients such as antioxidants or grape seed oil. For very dry, cracked skin, petrolatum-based products are preferable, as they are more lasting than creams and are more effective in preventing water evaporation.

Oily skin: In oily skin, moisturizers are still very useful in daily beauty regime but most useful after activities causing skin dryness, such as other skin care products and washing. For oily skin, water-based moisturizers that are specifically non-comedogenic are preferable (that is, they do not clog pores)

Aging skin: Appropriate moisturizers to keep aging skin soft and well hydrated are oil-based ones that contain petrolatum as the base, along with antioxidants or alpha hydroxyl acids against wrinkles.

Sensitive skin: On sensitive skin (which otherwise is susceptible to skin irritations, redness, itching or rashes), it is preferable with moisturizers that contain soothing ingredients such as chamomile or aloe and that minimize potential allergens such as fragrances or dyes, as well as irritants such as acids.

Tips:

The most important treatment for dry skin is to put water back in it. The best way to get water into your skin is to briefly soak in a bath or shower and to moisturize immediately afterwards or like 3minutes after bath - to trap water in the skin. Pat dry to keep skin damp; don't vigorously towel dry or you'll remove the water from your skin before it can be sealed in. When moisturizing, leave a tacky film of moisturizer on your skin; it will be absorbed in a few minutes.

Both oil and water-based products can be effective, but the one you choose depends on personal preference and skin type. "Oil-based moisturizers tend to be greasier but have the capacity to stay on the skin better," explains Dr. Levine. "Water-based moisturizers feel better on the skin but don't stay on as well."

Some dermatologists recommend that you perform your bathing and moisturizing regime at night just before going to bed. You are unlikely to further dry out or irritate your skin while sleeping, so the water can be more thoroughly absorbed into your skin.

It is recommended that if you have dry skin, soak hands and feet in a warm bath wash, moisturize afterwards, and put on pure cotton gloves and socks before going to sleep - the skin comes out tender and soft in the morning.

Moisturizer should be applied to the hands every time they are washed or in contact with water.

The Effect of Lighting on Makeup

Lighting is very important when applying makeup, for precision and accuracy. The occasion for which the makeup is needed and the time of the day the makeup is applied and ultimately worn are factors to be considered when applying makeup in order to have a professional outlook. We have classified lighting into natural lights(pure daylight) and artificial lights.

Natural lights reflects unto the face from any surface it hits. Unlike artificial light, natural lights shows up the true colours and textures of the makeup. This is so because natural light doesn't cast shadows. When makeup that should be worn under natural
light or during the day is applied under artificial light, by the time it is seen under natural light the true shades are shown and the application mishaps are revealed.

For Artificial lights especially When the occasion is in Photography or Cinema, yellow and harsh white lights that are mostly used, but the brightness is mostly softend with shades which directs the amount of light given out downwards.
The light is concentrated on the face and as a result some of the colours are changed especially with yellow light,
which simply turns purple to a bluish colour, it also reduces the intensity of red, making them appear darker, it reduces and softens the intensity of gold colour as well.
While white light even though it is the closest to the natural day light, immediately makes the face look white, so that if the wrong foundation has been applied and not properly blended, the mistake is revealed,
it has the tendency as well to make bright colours look too bright, colours basically take to the hue of the white light.
Therefore these must be taken into consideration as you work with lights.

Here are a few tips:

Any makeup look that is meant for a day light occasion should always be done with pure white light reflecting on the face directly.

For makeup looks for night events which will ultimately seen under artificial light can be worn under artificial lighting, but instead of so much of foundation and powder, use more shimmers on the eyes and or lips, and make the face less subtle.

All you need to know about the 'Eyebrows'

The eyebrows are the curvy hair above the eyes, right on top of the brow bone. For some people; their eyebrows are thick and aligned or unruly while others have it sparsely. The main function of the eyebrows is to prevent dirt, sweat, and moisture from falling into the eyes and also to protect the eyes from sunlight. They also function in communication and facial expression like, amazement, sadness, and anger.

Eyebrows are a major feature in a woman’s face especially for makeup and several methods have been adopted to alter them like waxing, threading, and tweezing so as to enhance or accentuate the face. The most common of the methods is the tweezing where tweezers are used to remove or thin out the brows. Waxing makes use of the wax heated, spread on the part of the brow that wants to be taken out and the use of strip to pull out the hair from the root. Threading is where a cotton thread is twisted over the hair to take out the part that is not needed. Tiny scissors or razor blades are used alone or with any of the other methods to make neat the hair that has been pulled out. The process of plucking could be painful especially for first timers but after a while, the individual gets used to it. Some women totally shave off their eyebrows and leave them bare then they line them with a pencil or tattoo them, but this doesn’t look natural at all because that arched hairy part above the eyes are the natural enhancer of the entire look. The darker color of hair women have over the brow area, the more prominent their look becomes. Sometimes women have to strike with pencil or use an eyebrow shadow to fill up the brows to make it prominent if they don’t have it naturally or full enough. Eyebrows act as a vital part of the face. And can make a great difference between a beautiful woman and a beautiful ape, so it shouldn’t be totally taken out.

Everyone has different shape of brows that is unique to them. The most common types of eyebrows are:

Arched: This kind of eyebrow looks very thick and broad. It is a combination of the angled and curved shapes to create a softer feature than the angular eyebrows.

Angled: This eyebrow is the most outstanding of all the eyebrow shape. It has an obvious angular feature.

Curved or round: This is round shape of eyebrow. It has a slightly prominent arc. But the arch can be accentuated artificially by shaping or grooming the eyebrows

Flat or straight: These eyebrows look straight like they have no arch at all.

Sloping: This is a rare feature, a number of people have it, and the eyebrows are downward sloping towards the outer corner of the eyes. They have no obvious arc.

The shape of the face mostly determine the shape of the eyebrow and in grooming eyebrows, one should understand that there are different type of eyebrows that suits different facial structures. For instance; A round face will go better with an arched brow to create an illusion on a longer face, and a round or curvy eyebrow will suit someone with a long or oblong face. But it is found out that some of the time, round faces have the round features while long faces have arched features. The apple shaped faces or oval shaped faces can have any form of eyebrows because it suits them.

In application of eye makeup products, to the eye area, it is essential to know that for the Sloping and Straight eyebrow features, they have more narrow eyelids, so less is required for them, because depositing too much colors or different shades of colors will make the eyelid look too busy, thereby not attractive. While for Arched, Angled and Curvy, one could deposit or play around with colors (as much as blending is done) since the eyelid is wide enough.

Tip: For all the shape of the eyebrows, one can enhance the arc artificially when grooming the brows, because the arc gives the face a ‘lifted’ outlook.

Tip: In grooming the eyebrows, one should be careful not to make them too thin in the process of trying to get them to look exactly the same. In as much as they should look the same, the will never look exactly the same; they are only sisters not twins.

Fact: The eyebrows can have dandruff and as with scalp dandruff, flaking of the skin under the eyebrows can have many causes, from fungal involvement to psoriasis. Using shampoos as on the scalp could help, or a skin treatment prescription

The eyebrows must also be well taken care of especially because they help to give the face definition, recognition and a unique identity.

liquid foundation, cream foundation, stick foundation, cream-to-powder foundation etc.
To make it easier for you to determine the type that is best for you, we have placed foundations

Liquid Foundations: This usually offer a sheer coverage and provides a natural look. It is easy to apply

Most of the time, we make up artist love to the 'multi-coloured eyeshadow thingy', but what we refuse to do is to do proper blending even for bridal and traditional make up.
The core and basic rule of make up artistry is Blending, Blending and Blending!
We actually do say there are no hard and fast rules in makeup artistry, but the rule of blending is an exception. The only time you bypass the rule of blending is photography, fashion and run way makeup which allows for the liberty of eccentricity.

Sometime in February I had the pleasure of doing makeup for a friend of mine. The exciting thing about her wedding look is that she wanted an Egyptian goddess look and but also closer to Kim Kardashian's wedding look......for her face.

Okay, it sounded interesting to me and I was excited about helping her create her much desired look. So we kicked it off!

I gave her a grey and black smokey eyes using application techniques that flatters her eyes, blended it well with a sheer pink lip stick and gloss, lined the rims of her lips with a wine lip liner, blended all together so that there are no hard demarcation lines.

I finished up with a pink blush, and blended it with another peach blush to give the result I want....

Recently I have been wondering why tomato is such a super tasty recipe in making delicious meals, this prompted me to dig deeper into knowing the benefits of this fruit/vegetable.
It is not surprising to know that tomato is not only healthy for our bodies (good health), but also for our skin and hair because of its rich red colour and the softness in its pulp. Tomato is a very good source of vitamin C and Vitamin A, it helps to get rid of acne and promotes great healthy skin.
The acid in tomato helps to balance the skin tone, reduces excess oil, and fights against dull skin and acne breakouts.

Here are different ways you can incorporate tomatoes into your daily beauty routine for younger-looking and healthier skin:

CURE ACNE WITH TOMATO PULP
Mash a fresh tomato and apply the pulp liberally to your face.
Leave on skin for about 30 minutes then rinse and moisturize.
Do this every day for several days and your acne will disappear.
For a quick pimple vanish, dab a bit of tomato paste on the spot.
This will draw out excess oil and lessen redness.

COMBAT OILY SKIN AND CLEANSE YOUR SKIN AND MAKE AN ASTRINGENT
Cut a tomato in half and rub it on your face. Press into blackheads. Rinse and moisturize.

Tomato-and-avocado mask is great for combination skin (oily, normal, and dry) it combines the astringent,
blackhead and oil-reducing benefits of tomatoes with the antiseptic and moisturizing properties of avocados.
This super-rich mask also contains vitamin A, C and E, all of which are essential for healthy skin.
