Washington Nationals catcher Jesus Flores is likely to begin the season on the disabled list because his surgically repaired shoulder has been slow to heal. Washington is sending Flores to Birmingham, Ala., to have Dr. James Andrews take another look at his right shoulder. Manager Jim Riggleman said Wednesday he expects Flores to spend at least 10 days away from the club while undergoing tests. Flores hit .301 in 93 at-bats last season, then had surgery to repair a torn labrum …

“The kid is special,” Morgan said. “You don’t see stuff like this everyday. It’s special, just watching that arm and just seeing something like that is something you have to see for yourself. It’s special.”

For the National’s fans, that is what we are hoping for, something special.

Left-hander John Lannan, the Nationals’ likely opening day starter April 5, gave up two runs, two hits and a walk in two innings of his first spring outing. He struck out two.

After struggling through a 27-pitch first inning during which he hit a batter and issued a walk, Lannan quickly regrouped.

“The first inning was a little rough, just trying to find a good rhythm and the ball was up a little quick. But it’s a game of adjustments and I made an adjustment,” Lannan said, adding that his rhythm was better in the second.

Washington’s team ERA stands at 12.82 through four games.

There is plenty of promise, along with inexperience on this club, but the pace needs to pick up.

For Pitchers, the ones to watch would be:

Roy Halladay, Phillies

Billy Wagner, Braves

Halladay would be a great pickup if he is still available in 2009 he posted a 17-10, 2.79 ERA, and 209 strike outs. Wagner’s 2009 consisted of a 1.72 ERA and 26K’s as he continues to be one of leagues premier closers.

Jason Bay, comes to the New York Mets after previously playing for the Red Sox.  He comes back to the NL poised to put up great numbers in 2010.  In 2009 he had a 276 avg, 36 HR’s and 119 RBI’s.  I expect him to be a major threat and great every day pick up.

From the segment I watched, my sleeper pick would be Plácido Polanco, Phillies. He is projected to bat second, and with the power hitting behind him, he should be expected score 100 or more runs.

Fantasy Spin: Lannan can definitely help you with IP, WHIP, and ERA. He is an extreme ground ball pitcher. With an improved defense Lannan might surprise you with more wins in 2010. He is in the top 100 pitchers overall, and could be valuable at the back of your rotation when he is a double starter.
