Stephen Strasburg and Ian Desmond are going to make it rough on the National’s brass this spring. Both are making strong statements about their desire to come North to the big show. Strasburg shut out the Cardinals for three innings this afternoon, while striking out two. He has not allowed a run in five innings of work so far this spring. Desmond is hitting a hot .476 with a team leading 11 RBI.

Fantasy Spin: Desmond should be moving up on your draft boards if he continues to rake. If Strasburg is not on everyone’s radar, I question what planet you are living on.

Jesus Flores set to start as catcher.

The Nationals have lost nine straight spring training games. Each game has had a plethora of problems, whether they cannot score enough, whether the bull pens blows it, or whether pitching and defense didn’t show up they have found ways to lose. Looking forward the Nats have plenty to work on and opening day cannot come soon enough. One thing will be for sure come opening day, Jesus Flores will be at home plate.

Washington Nationals catcher Jesus Flores is likely to begin the season on the disabled list because his surgically repaired shoulder has been slow to heal. Washington is sending Flores to Birmingham, Ala., to have Dr. James Andrews take another look at his right shoulder. Manager Jim Riggleman said Wednesday he expects Flores to spend at least 10 days away from the club while undergoing tests. Flores hit .301 in 93 at-bats last season, then had surgery to repair a torn labrum …

Stephen Strasburg makes his long awaited debut.

Its a lukewarm/cold day in Flordia. The sun is shinning on the diamond, but not on the Washington Nationls who have lost 6 straight exhibition games. Yet there is optimism surrounding this team. However, even the fair weather are in sheer delight, today Stephen Strasburg takes the mound for the first time. He may pitch an inning or two. He may not show his “heat” and he may just work on a few pitches and work on his mechanics. Craig Heist of WTOP.com wrote a piece this morning:

“The kid is special,” Morgan said. “You don’t see stuff like this everyday. It’s special, just watching that arm and just seeing something like that is something you have to see for yourself. It’s special.”

For the National’s fans, that is what we are hoping for, something special.

The Nats lose their 4th in a row.

The Washington Nationals dropped their 4th straight, to the New York Mets, spring training game, and now are 0-4. It is not the the end of the world, but having and ERA over 12 is a bit troubling. It is also troubling that your projected opening day starter has a few jitters to get out. The Washington Times reports:

Left-hander John Lannan, the Nationals’ likely opening day starter April 5, gave up two runs, two hits and a walk in two innings of his first spring outing. He struck out two.

After struggling through a 27-pitch first inning during which he hit a batter and issued a walk, Lannan quickly regrouped.

“The first inning was a little rough, just trying to find a good rhythm and the ball was up a little quick. But it’s a game of adjustments and I made an adjustment,” Lannan said, adding that his rhythm was better in the second.

Washington’s team ERA stands at 12.82 through four games.

There is plenty of promise, along with inexperience on this club, but the pace needs to pick up.

NL East fantasy players to watch out for.

Paul Severino and Eric Karabell discuss and focused on the NL East, and its fantasy prospects.

For Pitchers, the ones to watch would be:

Roy Halladay, Phillies

Billy Wagner, Braves

Halladay would be a great pickup if he is still available in 2009 he posted a 17-10, 2.79 ERA, and 209 strike outs. Wagner’s 2009 consisted of a 1.72 ERA and 26K’s as he continues to be one of leagues premier closers.

Jason Bay, comes to the New York Mets after previously playing for the Red Sox. He comes back to the NL poised to put up great numbers in 2010. In 2009 he had a 276 avg, 36 HR’s and 119 RBI’s. I expect him to be a major threat and great every day pick up.

From the segment I watched, my sleeper pick would be Plácido Polanco, Phillies. He is projected to bat second, and with the power hitting behind him, he should be expected score 100 or more runs.

BKnight reported that Stephen Strasburg will indeed be starting off his pro career in the minors, but all reports indicate that he is progressing well and that we would definitely see him at at some point this season, perhaps earlier. Kurkjian, spoke to Davy Johnson (who coached him in Olympics). Said of Johnson, his talent may tempt Jim Riggleman to bring him up right away. Kurkjian also believes, that Strasburg could be ready for opening day. That will not happen, but with the talent that he brings makes him “big league” ready.

Fantasy Spin: Lannan can definitely help you with IP, WHIP, and ERA. He is an extreme ground ball pitcher. With an improved defense Lannan might surprise you with more wins in 2010. He is in the top 100 pitchers overall, and could be valuable at the back of your rotation when he is a double starter.
