Staying Active When We Are Told To Stay Indoors

2014-01-08T21:42:00.000-08:00

Utah's "Unhealthy Air"

Utah is a great place to live. With numerous parks, trails and outdoor activities close at hand Utah can be the perfect place to stay healthy and active. However, Utah, the Wasatch front in particular, has a dirty little secret. This secret's name? Inversion, and it may not be that little. In fact during periods of inversion Salt Lake city and surrounding areas we have been attributed as having the "nation's worst air." If you've driven any where near Salt Lake Valley during the winter months you have most definitely seen it, smelt in and you may have even tasted it. But the air isn't just ugly or foul smelling it can be deadly. It has been asserted that merely breathing our air can be comparable to smoking cigarettes and can lead to many health problems including mild respiratory irritation but is has even been said that it could lead to problems as serious as heart attack and stroke.

Public health officials have urged us all to stay indoors during times of inversion. They have also warned against outdoor exercise, driving or anything that could put undo physical stress on your body. These are doctors and highly educated individuals asking us to stop exercising outdoors- it must a serious issue. So what can we do? Do we give up? Do we lay low and hibernate in our homes trusting our doors and windows to keep the poor air at bay? No! We do not! We stand tall and declare "We will be active no matter the air! We will fight for our health, we will fight for our bodies by doing P90X and Pilates. We Will not give up!" Okay we may rhyme with every sentence but we cannot stop being active! We are a very clever people. If we can think up such things as Fry Sauce or Apple Beer we CAN find ways to stay healthy and active while staying away from outdoor air pollutants. Our habits now not only affect our state or our health. Our habits of healthy living can and must pass from parent to child and as that child leaves their dear home they must continue to pass it on throughout our nation and throughout our world. Our health and the health of our world can only improve one person at a time. So let us all now commit to being active despite the air.

Antique Brass Headboard and Footboard

2010-11-26T13:51:00.000-08:00

This is a beautiful brass headboard and footboard. The brass is the beautiful antique color and wear only brought on by years of use. The bed knobs are beat up and beautiful. Both measure 43 inches wide and the foot board measure 28 inches tall the headboard measure 35 inches tall. They would fit a twin bed. All I have is the head board and footboard. It is best that way so that a modern safe bed frame can be used. You will love this bed in any bedroom of the house.

This is a beautiful brass head board and footboard.

Antique Off White Stoneware Jug

2010-11-26T12:21:00.000-08:00

This is a beautiful Jug.

n a beautiful off white color with crackling this is a piece that will add an antique beauty to your home.

There is some beautiful clay work around the spout that looks like it is wearing a beautiful pearl necklace.

At one time it had a metal handle that extended from the two holes on the sides. That it made it out of it's life of hard work is a miracle in it's own right.

This just tells you that it was used and abused as a functional piece of stoneware pottery which makes it that much more beautiful.

There has been some repair work done where the handle was and there are still some chips at both handle spots.

It appears to have a mark in the clay near the top in the middle it is hard to make out but it appears to be a 17.

Make this an addition to your home and you will love it. To purchase click here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/63009764/antique-white-stoneware-jug

If you happen to know anymore than I do (which is very possible if not likely) about this or any of my other pieces please let me know in the comments.

Thanks ~Wes

2010-11-08T08:45:00.000-08:00

SOLD for $50.00

about 10 days after being listed on Etsy.

This is a really cool globe with great colors. With so much wear and water damage this globe has taken on a new beauty.

With the water damage it has sustained it's colors have become so much more vibrant.

Be sure to check out all the damage the bottom is damaged the bottom support fits in a different spot than it should , the top is damaged, there is water damage through out, the tiles misfit because of the water damage.

Do not let all the damage scare you off. The damage makes it what it is a gorgeous display piece.

I love having it on display at my home and you will too.

A Mafco Prod. Japan...

2010-10-22T12:50:00.000-07:00

A little bear hugging a garbage can don't ask me why he loves his garbage can so much.

The sticker on the bottom reads A Mafco Prod. Japan.

He is about 3 inches tall and is similar to blue mountain pottery style. This is a fun novelty piece especially if you have bears hugging your garbage cans.

He has a cute face don't you think?

And yes it's bigger than a quarter... in case you were wondering :)

The sticker on the bottom reads A Mafco Prod. Japan. I have found online only couple other items with such stickers and I could not find a little bear like this. So now I know I have the only one in the world.. ;)

To purchase or just to check him out go here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/sweetoldstuff

Vintage Brass Change Dish

2010-10-21T11:46:00.000-07:00

This is a very pretty brass change dish, ring or bracelet dish, or even a soap dish.

I think it was used as a soap dish in a home with hard water. But, now it looks glorious but not over cleaned. You know the look when a novice takes to brass and "cleans" it by scratching the surface so bad it looses all value.

I like it for change and think it is the perfect size for it.

Not sure when or where it was made but it is well made heavy and solid. There are some marks but they tell me nothing. If they mean anything to any of you my readers please leave a comment and let me know.

I think it would be too small for a large bar of soap but just perfect for a cute little boutique bar of scented herbal soap.

Hardwood Letterpress Letters!

2010-10-19T19:52:00.000-07:00

What I've SOLD an UPDATE:

-The A-Z set sold for $120.00 about 2 weeks after listing it.

-The number set 0-10 sold for $55.00 about 2 weeks after it was listed after being feature on the front page of Etsy.

-I no longer have any letters available. I sold the leftovers in the shop for $6 a piece and the unwanteds at our yard sale in late July

Look what I found...

Beautiful vintage or maybe even antique hardwood letters used in an old letterpress.

They were kinda expencive for starving college student standards so we held off on them but I was secretly hoping in my little heart that my wife would give me the go ahead on these beauties (you always have to get the go ahead from her if you want happiness and joy to abound:)

This purchase was approved by the wife selection comity so I started by picking my kid's names Sophie my little girl is 2 and 1/2 and this would make a great decor item for her room and we have a son due Christmas day who we are planning on naming Oliver. I bought some other select letters that trip and brought them home. We just loved them and started coming up with ideas of how to best use these beauties. Then my beautiful wonderful Mother came to visit for the weekend and insisted we go back and pick up every letter they had and the mother always...sometimes...well every once in a while over rides the wife selection committee. So to say the least we broke the bank and ended up with a 132 letter numbers and symbols in total. That included the whole alphabet and letters 1-10 and a wide random assortment of other letters. I have them (well some of them) for sale in my etsy shop and on display in my home. I hope you go check them out and enjoy them as much as I do.

Here are a random assortment of the other pictures of them.

These next couple pics are of the ones i bought before my Mom came to town and insisted I bought the whole lot.

I know random words but hey I worked with what I had.

This "s" pic is one of my favorites.

Just couldn't resist from spelling UNO ( a good word and an equally good card game)

We have a whole lot of "W"s which is good if your names (first and last) start with "W"

After having gone back we had enough for one whole set of letters and numbers which is just awesome if you ask me. They are currently residing on our shelf until we are unlucky enough to have someone buy them (that was one condition on buying them "we will sell all but our children's name :(

So buy if you must but we might not be so happy about it ;)

Reds and Blues

2010-07-12T12:23:00.000-07:00

This vintage kerosene lantern is just a great color of red in that great vintage style. It was made in China and looks to be from between the late 50's to late 70's. Written on the base are the words "Double Rings" with the symbol of two rings interlocked. The best part is that it still works. It's valued between $25-$35

Later the same day I found this great little book that matches so perfectly with that beautiful red of the kerosene lantern. "Cornelli" was published in 1926 written by the author Johanna Spyri, the author of Heidi. This pretty little edition had been found by book worms through the decades of time. Not only the type of book worms who loved reading it but also the kind who loved EATING it. Yes real book worms. I had never known such a thing had existed. This beautiful copy book worm holes and all was sold just days after listing. It sold for $15.00. To see pictures of the inside click here, check out those real book worm holes COOL.

This beautiful aqua blue bottle was made by the James B. Beam distilling Co. in 1966. It's look is so classy with it's matching blue topper. It is great as a decoration or as a function pitcher be it for alcoholic beverages or something a little more fun like "Kool-Aid". On the bottom it reads (bellow) just adding to the coolness and authenticity of this great piece.

I have seen them listed for as much as $65.00 but, lately they have been going for much less.

So what do you think do you like this combination of "Reds and Blues"?
