And though I'd endorse that, I do think there are some great fighters currently campaigning, but not as many in each weight division as there once was. What stands out more to me is how we are inundated with so many counter-punchers. With the exception of Manny Pacquiao, a majority of today's greats and dominant fighters, like Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Juan Manuel Marquez, Bernard Hopkins, Carlo Froch, Sergio Martinez, Adrien Broner and Vitali Klitschko, are at their best and most effective fighting as a counter-puncher.

There are less than a handful of active fighters today who are close to outstanding let alone spectacular fighting as the aggressor and pushing the fight; I'd point to Lucas Matthysse, Roman Gonzalez, and Gennady Golovkin. In today's boxing world it seems as if all the upper tier title holders and contenders either want to wait on the opponent to initiate the action, or attempt to move around and box. Nobody wants to or is skilled enough to force the fight and make the opponent fight under duress.

Being a truly effective aggressor/attacker requires a fighter to be in phenomenal condition and have the capacity to force the fight from bell-to-bell. It's the hardest route for a fighter to take compared to any other style in professional boxing. And most

BELLEW-CHILEMBA ROUND 13!

TONY BELLEW VS. ISAAC CHILEMBA II

WBC SILVER LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

THIS SATURDAY, MAY 25

O2 ARENA, LONDON, U.K.

New York, NY (5/23/13) On March 30, top-rated light heavyweight contender Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (20-1-2, 9KO's) and reigning WBC silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12KO's) battled to a 12-round split decision draw in Bellew's backyard of Liverpool. Now, the two combatants are set to go at it again this Saturday night, on the undercard of the much anticipated rematch between defending IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler at the beautiful O2 Arena in London. The bout, promoted by Matchroom Sport, in association with DiBella Entertainment, is scheduled for 12 rounds and will once again be for Bellew's WBC Silver light heavyweight title.

"I am sharper, stronger and definitely healthier this time around," said WBC #3, IBF #9, and WBO #9-rated Chilemba. "I will adjust and do whatever is necessary to beat him and bring the victory home. The changes that I made this time were mostly to do with my approach to the camp and keeping healthy. Buddy has made a few changes in the ring with me as well."

In their first bout, Chilemba got off to a slow start, allowing Bellew to take the early rounds behind a loudly partisan hometown crowd. Chilemba picked up the pace in the fifth frame, and after the sixth, trainer Buddy McGirt gave

Instead, he signed another contract with co-promoters Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions.

Tamayo restaurant, famous for its collection of Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo’s paintings, was the setting on Wednesday for the contract signing between Burgos and his old promoters. The Mexican junior lightweight from Tijuana said it succinctly about re-signing with his promoters.

“I want to make Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions proud of me,” said Burgos, 25. “They believed in me and gave me a great path with two world title attempts. It’s time for me to pay them back.”

It was five months ago that “Miniburgos” roughed up WBO junior lightweight titlist Roman Martinez of Puerto Rico during their title fight in NYC. After 12 rounds, one of the judges, Tony Paolillo, scored it heavily for Martinez while another judge, John Signorile, saw it a draw. It was another example of poor judging and of visiting Mexican fighters getting stiffed in a New York prizefight.

“I’ll never fight in New York again,” said Burgos. “There are too many obstacles to carry on my back. Those two judges are responsible for putting my career back.”

The junior lightweight from Tijuana said he is putting that fight in the past and looks to

It wasn’t easy but Mosley’s win was emphatic and proved he still can fight.

“I’m not washed up,” Mosley said by cell phone the day after.

The win by Mosley (47-8-1, 39 Kos) over Cano (26-3-1, 20 Kos) took place in Cancun, Mexico, where the Mexican contender was the beneficiary of the pro-Mexican crowd. It helped but couldn’t deflect those blows coming from the former lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight world champion on Saturday on the Golden Boy Promotions fight card.

Many boxing fans frowned when they learned that Mosley (seen above versus Canelo in 2012 was returning to the boxing ring after announcing his retirement late last year. But the certain-to-be Hall of Fame inductee when he retires gave an impressive performance.

It was Mosley’s first win since January 2009 when he defeated Antonio Margarito by knockout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The fight was back and forth during the early going in the world famous resort beach area.

Cano is not an easy opponent. He had fought Erik “El Terrible” Morales on late notice and gave the Tijuana warrior all he could handle before his own corner stopped the fight in the 10th round in Las Vegas. Then last October, the Mexican slugger gave WBA welterweight titlist Paul Malignaggi a terrific struggle but fell

He has the sometimes unfortunate habit of saying what he thinks and doing what he feels like doing, even when it is politically incorrect to say or do it.

Think not? Consider just a few of the incidents that have garnered the most publicity for the Philadelphia ring legend in recent years.

*Throwing down the Puerto Rican flag at two public gatherings prior to his Sept. 29, 2001, middleweight unification showdown with Felix Trinidad. The second such incident, on Trinidad’s home turf in San Juan, nearly caused a riot.

*Pronouncing that “no white boy can beat me” during the lead-up to his April 18, 2008, light-heavyweight bout with undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe in Las Vegas. Calzaghe, his pale complexion not proving an insurmountable hindrance, won a 12-round split decision despite being knocked down in the first round.

*Voicing his displeasure with the seeming lack of urgency by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in the closing minutes of a 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX on Feb. 6, 2005. “I’m disappointed in Donovan McNabb,” Hopkins said. “I’m going to be straight up, I’m not holding back. I’ll say it to his face.”

It so happens that he operates on something of a higher mental plane than most of us, I dare say, and it's because of his ability to reason at a lofty zone that I enjoy picking his brain every now and again, getting an extra dose of his analysis apart from his time on HBO's fights and his periodic "The Fight Game" half hour magazine show.

I chatted with Lampley on Monday for a spell, getting his take on HBO's forthcoming slate, and the state of the game as a whole, especially pertaining to the bifurcated landscape which was fashioned when HBO decided eight weeks ago to spurn content provided by promoter Golden Boy.

First off, Lampley seemed jazzed about HBO's Saturday super middleweight scrap, which pits Carl Froch, the cocky Brit who has enjoyed a remarkable late-career uptick in popularity and regard from fans who appreciate his take-on-all-comers attitude and offensive-minded in-ring style, in a rematch against the 34-year-old Dane Mikkel Kessler who enters with more to prove, having battled the injury bug in recent years. The show, to unfold at the O2 Arena, kicks off at 6 PM ET.

"It's a great fight," Lampley told me. "The first fight (which took place on April 24, 2010, and saw Kessler win a UD12) was a high intensity battle fought at a

Peterson, who had never been stopped in any of his previous 33 fights, was dropped by a left hook in the second round and again in the third. After tasting the canvas once more from yet another left hook, referee Steve Smoger deemed Peterson unfit to continue and wisely called a halt to the action. This is now the sixth fight in a row in which Matthysse has managed to take his opponent out before the final bell.

Everyone and their mother knows that Lucas Matthysse is the owner of some extremely heavy hands, making him pound-for-pound one of the hardest hitters in all of boxing. In this analysis, however, I would like to focus more on Matthysse’s craft and ring acumen, which, I believe, are vastly underappreciated and can be attributed toward many of his knockouts.

It was obvious from the opening bell that Peterson’s game plan was based on controlling and maintaining distance and preventing Matthysse from getting set to hit. For Peterson to have had any kind of success then, he would have had to rely heavily on the jab

As has been recently reported, the WBC elected to strip me of my world title belt, making the upcoming bout between Sakio Bika and Marco Antonio Periban for the vacant Super Middleweight Title. After consultation with my manager James Prince and attorney Josh Dubin, it is my belief that the WBC did not have the right to strip me of my World Title and name me Champion Emeritus. We voiced our position to the WBC, and after several discussions, have agreed to disagree with their interpretation of the facts and rules. In our opinion, we feel strongly that I did not violate the rules in any manner whatsoever.

When I fought Chad Dawson, there was no mandatory contender. Subsequent to my victory, I injured my shoulder but have remained ready, willing and able to defend my title within the period specified by the WBC's rules. Nonetheless, without what we feel was appropriate due process, the WBC elected to strip me of my World Title. I think my track record in fighting the best opponents available speaks for itself. I worked extremely hard and dedicated my entire career to win and defend my WBC belt. As a matter of principle, I have chosen to stand up for what I believe is right. I think the fans know and appreciate

He still loved the Mets and the Knicks, still liked reading the New York Post. <br
He talked about being able to walk to Madison Square Garden to see a fight, or strolling over to Jimmy’s Corner Bar in Manhattan to have a cocktail or a Pepsi in the days before and after he quit drinking. Those few times he needed a ride, he could catch a cab or take a train or a bus. But mostly he walked. Everything in New York City was close. Which is a good thing because legendary boxing matchmaker John Bosdal, alias Johnny Bos, never drove a car and never boarded a plane. He was afraid to fly.

But nothing was within walking distance of his condo in Clearwater, Florida where he lived the last five years. And as he got older, Bos found it harder and harder to get around, to get to the post office to mail out boxing memorabilia, to get to the grocery store to buy hamburger, Pepsi or Mountain Dew, to get to the Dollar Store to buy snacks or whatever caught his eye.

Florida

Anyone who has ever attended a NASCAR race knows there is a world of difference between watching the sport on television and being there in person. On TV, the cars don’t seem nearly as fast, or as powerful, as they really are. If you’re sitting in the stands, especially if you’re close to the track, the noise and vibration of a 190-mph racecar vrooming past is akin to finding yourself at the edge of a tornado.

Saturday night, in Boardwalk Hall, referee Steve Smoger had an especially close view of the high-octane thrust of Argentine power puncher Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, and it was Smoger who decided to wave the checkered flag before the completion of lap, uh, Round 3, lest Lamont Peterson slam into the retaining wall once too often.

Peterson (31-2-1, 16 KOs), whose IBF junior welterweight championship was not on the line in the catchweight bout (the contract limit was 141 pounds), had already been floored three times when Smoger stepped in and waved it off 2 minutes, 14 seconds into the third of the scheduled 12 rounds. To let matters continue beyond that point, Smoger decided, would simply be to invite disaster for the obviously woozy Peterson.

“The first significant punch (Matthysse) landed in Round 1, I could see Lamont was very hurt,” said Smoger. “But he recovered. In Round 2, I was very tempted to stop it after the first knockdown, but

The two met in a non-title, welterweight catch-weight (141 lbs) bout, broadcast by Showtime, which promised fireworks as soon as the fight was announced.

Peterson (31-2-1, 16KO) began the first round using his jab and movement to establish space. Matthysse (34-2, 32KO) used the pressure and aggression he is known for while trying to find his home run shot.

In the second Matthysse (140 lbs) continued the pressure and Peterson (141 lbs) complained to referee Steve Smoger about being hit in the back of the head. A solid left from Matthysse caught Peterson’s attention and dropped him. Peterson rose quickly and answered Smoger’s eight count. The DC native landed a left of his own to end the round.

At the beginning of the third round Matthysse slipped to the canvas after a wild miss left him off balance. Peterson continued to box and had some success by landing an uppercut. In the next exchange a powerful left hook put Peterson down just as he was landing a left of his own. He rose on wobbly legs and Smoger cautiously allowed him to continue. Matthysse continued his attack and knocked Peterson down and into the ropes with a vicious

Mosley and Cano were both buzzed a few times, and it looked like Mosley would maybe get stopped in the ninth. But he held on, and surprisingly, his legs showed some bounce and he had Cano backing up for much of the rest of the way.

Mosley went to 47-8-1 and won a WBC International welter title. Cano dropped to 26-3-1.

Many hammered Mosley for gloving up, and thought he should have stuck with the retirement he announced after losing to Canelo Alvarez on May 5, 2012. My stance is that he is living his one life, and I have seen boxers who have dropped off much more than he continue to play their trade. He told people that he'd been fighting with too many injuries, and now that he was healed up, things would go better.

He was asked after if he wanted another crack at Canelo, and he said that Canelo is a 154 now, and he's not.

Peterson tried to box slick early, but a left hook put him down in the second. With his legs compromised, as he tried to regain his full faculties, Peterson had to fight in the third, and it didn't work; a left hook sent him down, he got up, and ref Steve Smoger looked hard at him. Smoger let him continue, but another left hook ended it. The end came at 2:14 of the third, via TKO.

Jim Gray spoke to Peterson after. He said he felt OK physically. He said he got lazy with the jab, and got caught. He noted that he was hit behind the head. Did he recover from the first knockdown? Yes, he said. He felt he could have fought through it, but said Smoger did the right thing. "He's a good fighter," Peterson said.

To Gray, Matthysse said he saw what Peterson had in the first and started connecting in the second. He said he prepped for 2 1/2 months for the fight and that was the difference. Now, he said, he knows he is the best at 140. Danny Garcia next? Yes, he's ready for it, and thinks Al Haymon and Golden

He started strong, and was throwing more than 80 punches around Showtime's TV opener from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Purdy, though, looked to be just showing up to survive, like he would see going the distance as a win. He ate and ate and ate, and while I didn't see him get buzzed, his corner pulled the plug after round seven. Purdy was displeased with the move, but the fans weren't crushed as it was a one-sided situation.

After the fight, Devon told Jim Gray that he hurt his left hand in the first round. He said Purdy showed he was tough, and he knows there will be critics who bust his chops, but he said he will just keep keepin' on.

Purdy, who got the gig four weeks ago after Kell Brook was injured, missed weight at the Friday weigh in. He was 148, and 147.8 after taking an hour to get to 147, so he wouldn't be able to win Devon's crown even if he won. He fought like a man not in possession of a full complement of fire.

In the first, the 20-3-1 Brit Purdy started slow. The IBF welter champ Alexander (from St Louis; 24-1 entering; 146 3/4 pounds) looked to go forward, and
