ACC U-16 Challenge Cup 2010 - CHINA MARCH FORWARD

In a rain-affected match which saw Myanmar’s target of 110 adjusted to 81, China’s bowlers fought hard after a near two-hour delay. Bouncing back from their defeat to Iran yesterday China beat Myanmar by 46 runs at the Penang Sports Club.

Myanmar’s opening bowling pair of Captain Lin Aung and Khun Zaw could have inflicted more damage onto the batsmen at the start. Both were dangerous but both contributed 17 extras of the 19 runs that came off the first five overs. A total of 63 wides would be bowled in the first innings.

China’s batmen got themselves into a tangle in the ninth over when first, Ao Ruipeng strayed out of his crease after missing the ball and was run out. The very next ball Han Minjian fell to another run out. Two down in two balls and a third fell an over later.

China were unnecessarily scrambling for runs and after running three off a delivery in the 11th over, Chen Hang was too slow for the fourth and China were 45 for 5 after 11 overs. Not attempting to play many shots, China’s strategy was apparent – play all 40 overs. After the game China’s Coach Monjurul Islam said, “That was the plan. If they stayed 40 overs, they’d win.”

Burly wicket-keeper/batsman Tian Haiyang brought in some attacking skill. Haiyang lifted the ball over the 30-yard circle on a few occasions getting in singles and doubles. The partnership with Rang Jinyu grew and by the end of the 23rd over, they had picked themselves up to 73 for 6 and the game was swinging China’s way.

It was soon a test of patience for both teams as the runs and wickets dried up. It was the reason why Jinyu came down the track in the 28th and heaved – he connected but it went high into the air and leg-break bowler Aung Ko did well to hold onto it. Haiyang’s innings came to an end in the 34th over when he was plumb lbw off the bowling of slow-left armer Zin Hlaing. Not lasting long after that, China finished at 110.

Myanmar lost two early wickets but in the ninth over at 23 for 2, the heavens opened up. It gave both teams time to re-discuss their strategy. Then off 24 overs Myanmar required 81 to win.

Song Yangyang delivers

A brilliant bowling spell by Song Yangyang and his three wickets in the opening overs after the delay lifted his team and at this point China knew they had Myanmar down for the count. The pressure piled on the batsmen, wickets then fell much too often (Myanmar’s last eight wickets falling for five runs), and medium-pacer Rang Jinyu (3-9) picked off the tail-enders with ease.

“They just had to put the ball in front of the wicket – and they did. It was a good performance by both my batsmen and bowlers,” added Islam. China next face Oman at Universiti Sains Malaysia on July 16th. Oman beat Iran today by 82 runs.

ACC U-16 Challenge Cup 2010 - DAY ONE WIN FOR AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan sealed a comfortable win against Maldives in the first game of the ACC U-16 Challenge Cup at the Penang Sports Club. Opening bowler Qayoum Zazai and off-break bowler Shamsurhman Karokhil took four wickets each to help Afghanistan to a nine-wicket win.

Qadeer Zazai was the only Afghanistan wicket to fall as he gifted his wicket for an easy catch to gully in the third over. Afghanistan’s captain Javed Ahmadzai (25*) won the game with a sweetly timed shot over mid-wicket in the tenth over after some relatively cautious batting.

What was a cloudy start to the day soon saw the skies clear for a sunny opening to the ACC U-16 Challenge Cup. Maldives chose to bat and nerves were apparent from both sides at the beginning. They lost their first wicket in the opening over but only after some loose bowling from Qayoum Zazai (three no balls and two wides).

Afghanistan were the quicker of the teams to settle into the game with Zazai (4-13) and Karokhil (4-4) taking two wickets apiece by the end of the seventh over.

Maldives struggled throughout their innings against both the pace and spin attack, not being able to connect much with the ball. It was Afghanistan’s extras (20) that was the top score for Maldives. Spin bowlers Karokhil and Ahmadzai (1-0) were deadly accurate with their deliveries not allowing the Maldivian batsmen any room for error.

“We had taken the boys for a 20-day camp in Islamabad in Pakistan. They have done very well today but there is more to improve. For their first international game as a team, I think they did quite well.

“Our team bowled quite well and I am sure the team will learn from this experience,” said Afghanistan coach Assadullah Khan.

Afghanistan next play Bhutan at the Universiti Sains Malaysia day after tomorrow.

Rigsum top the group table

In a cloudy and dizzling weather this morning, with a doubt of heavy rain fall could pour, Rigsum faced BTCL at Jigmethang. Match was delayed by half an hour and it was still dizzling during the toss. Toss won by Rigsum and opted to bat first. Due to the heavy rain fall last night, the wicket became so favourable to batsmen that Rigsum’s opernes Kencho (63) and Manoj (34) added 90 runs partnership while manoj was trapped leg before wicket (LBW) of Phuntsho’s bowl. BTCL pace bowlers really struggled to break this partnership while both batsmen were looking so comfortable in the crease to face pacers without any trouble. Rigsum lost their first wicket in 14 overs.

Tirtha first down batsman who added 17 runs in 55 balls stayed with Kencho for 6 overs and the kencho went run-out in a Tirtha’s first run. Kencho could have scored century today but getting to face only one ball in an over while Tirtha defending other 5 balls, lost kencho’s momentum. In 109 runs on the board Rigsum lost 3 quick wickets. Thinley faced only four balls was bowled and after the depart of Thinley, team captain Sonam Tobgay arrived but immediately send back to pavillion on his first ball by Phuntsho Wangdi with dashing sharp turn spin, pitched on outisde leg went to hit off stump. It was almost a game over for Rigsum but three lower down the order batsmen added 52 runs to make the target of 182 runs on the board in 41.4 overs. Rigsum’s eight wickets came from BTCL spinners. Phuntsho and Tobgay took 3 wickets each and Tandin with 2 wickets.

In the second inning, BTCL lost unstoppable 3 wickets in a row with zero runs on the board. With 3 wickets for zero runs on the board, pressure went to inform batsmen Thinley and Phuntsho to take the whole burden. Rigsum with attacking field set up, Thinley and Phunstho showed a excellent character of being a thinking cricketer. Phuntsho added 44 runs in 43 balls and Thinley with 46 runs in 40 balls in 15 overs. After the first drink break, it was disaster BTCL when they lose wicket of Thinley got run-out in Tenzin’s throw. And then Puntsho got bowled of Sonam’s bowl.

BTCL just needed another 70 runs to win but lost of two inform batsmen made them lose the game. Jige lower order batsman added 13 runs before they were allout for 137 runs. Thinley the new contender.

Vibes produced a performance of immense spirit and character as they secured their second victory over Druk Trowa with eight wickets win at Jigmethang yesterday. It was again Thinley Jamtso’s scoring 40 runs not-out in 16 balls to finish off the match in 5.4 overs. Druk Trowa won the toss and decided to bat first. Vibes bowlers once again shuttered the Druk Torwa’s batsmen like they did it in their last match against Youth XI. Druk Trowa played only 22.3 overs and scored total of 79 runs on the board. Lachumi who made double digits figure of 37 run while rest went out for 1, 2 and duck. Koshi took the first wicket, but Thinley bowling from other end took 6 wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs to place Druk Trowa in dilemma.

Vibes batsman Kumar played his first match yesterday. Kumar’s recent performances against Afghanistan in ACC Trophy, when he knocked 42 runs has been the intimidate for every Bhutanese bowler to really plan and think to take his wicket. But Kumar botched to show yerterday, when he was bowled by Lachumi in fourth ball of first over. Thinley again brings Vibes to a confortable eight wickets win by adding 40 runs not-out with his blistering shots all over boundary. Druk Torwa succeed in taking 2 wickets of vibes. Thinley has also marked himself as a new contender for Player of the tournament award. Man of the match was awarded to Thinley for 6 wicket and 40 runs not-out.

It can't bring back the World Twenty20 trophy, but Pakistan extracted some sort of revenge on Australia in their first meeting since the semi-final in St Lucia. Again, a vigorous Umar Akmal half-century set up Pakistan's innings but this time their bowlers, led by Mohammad Aamer, did enough to strangle Australia's run-rate and deny Michael Clarke's men, who couldn't chase down 168.

In May, it took something special from Michael Hussey to drive Australia into the decider against England, as he monstered the 18 needed off the last over, bowled by Saeed Ajmal. This time, Ajmal fittingly collected the final wicket and was mobbed by his team-mates as Australia fell to a 23-run defeat, their first loss to Pakistan in any format in their past 13 meetings.

Umar set up the victory with the fastest Twenty20 international half-century by a Pakistan player, a 21-ball effort that brought the thousands of Pakistan fans at Edgbaston to their feet. Their 167 for 8 looked competitive but gettable, and when David Warner scythed five boundaries from Shoaib Akhtar's first five balls, Australia appeared to be in charge.

But once the field went back, and Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul came on, the runs dried up. Gul delivered yorker after yorker, and Afridi altered his pace and angle to keep Warner and David Hussey guessing during their 52-run stand. Hussey had 34 from 28 balls when he skied Afridi to mid-on, and Warner followed in the next over.

Warner's 41 from 31 was more restrained than his usual Twenty20 efforts, with the attack on Akhtar his only period of dominance. Ajmal, the unlucky man asked to bowl the final over in St Lucia, deceived Warner with a ball that went straight on, beat the bat and crashed into the stumps. That brought Michael Hussey to the crease, but there were no heroics this time.

The Australians needed some top-order support for Warner; instead, Michael Clarke's dismal Twenty20 batting record continued. He was caught for 5, trying to force Abdul Razzaq through cover and it is now eight innings since he has scored better than a run a ball in a Twenty20 for his country.

Aamer (3 for 27) began the strong bowling effort by trapping Shane Watson lbw in the first over of the chase, before he returned to snare the key wickets of Cameron White and Steven Smith. With every wicket the Pakistan fans roared and blasted on their air horns, just as they had during Umar's batting blitz.

The highlight of his 64 was a pair of sixes straight down the ground off Smith, but his ability to the find the gaps and invent ways of scoring was remarkable. It takes a brave man to paddle sweep a Dirk Nannes full toss off middle stump, but Umar made it look like the most logical selection of stroke and ran the ball to the fine-leg boundary.

He departed in the 19th over, bowled by Shaun Tait, but by then he'd done enough. Umar was the star, but he had good support from Shoaib Malik in a 51-run stand that included 20 off one over, as Malik launched a stinging attack on David Hussey's offspin.

Malik was out in unusual fashion when he edged a slow bouncer behind off Nannes and the batsmen took a cheeky single, only for replays to show that Tim Paine had completed the catch diving forward. Pakistan looked like they might not even bat out their overs after they stumbled to 47 for 4 in the eighth over.

Umar's recovery won Pakistan the game, and earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. There was no world trophy on offer, but the win will give Pakistan confidence ahead of their long tour of England. And a confident Pakistan is a dangerous Pakistan.

ACC APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT

The President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board AHM Mustafa Kamal FCA MP has been appointed the ACC's 21st President. Mr. Kamal takes over from Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ijaz Butt, who had held the post since 2008. The appointment took place at the ACC's AGM in Singapore.

"I consider this as a great honour for Bangladesh. I wish to thank everyone for their support and seek cooperation from all ACC Member nations so that we can take Asian cricket to new heights," said Mr. Kamal. Mr. Kamal will hold the post for the next two years as Bangladesh's nominee.

Mr. Binaya Raj Pandey who is the President of the Cricket Association of Nepal was appointed the new Vice-President of the ACC.

BT's pick of the bowlers: Tandin celebrating his wicket

BT bowlers shattered Youth XI batsmen to ensure berth in semi final with six wickets win at Jigmethang. Youth XI won the toss and opted to bat first. Youth XI batsmen just added 97 runs from the bat and 12 runs coming from extra to set a target of 109 runs on the board playing only 18.2 overs. Youth XI lost 7 wickets in 55 runs but later when Rafikal was send in number nine, added quick fire of 42 runs from 22 balls but an in-swing yorker of Tashi’s bowl sent him on his way for 42 runs.

Tandin (Tuffy) was the pick of the bowlers for 4 wickets for 53 runs in 8 overs followed by Sherab and Tashi with 3 wickets respectively.

With 109 runs on the board, Youth XI desperately looking for early wickets; was successful to get wickets of two openers Tashi and Chencho in 23 runs but partnership between Dorji (37) and Jigme (29) of 66 runs had already placed the team into comfortable zone.

Man of the Match: Thinley for 48 runs & 3 wickets

Vibes whitewashed the BEC united by comprehensive eight wicket win to mark the first win of the tournament. BEC united opted to bat first after winning the toss but the decision proved expensive as the Vibes bowler took wicket in the regular interval.

BEC united somehow manage to put 91 runs on the board playing only 14.1 overs. Disastrous start from the top order batsmen of BEC united only saw 11 runs contribution from the top four batsmen. Later Baganath quick fire of 45 runs from 17 balls gave some hope for the batting side but he felt victim to left arm bowler Sampath who bowled him out and took 4 wickets and gave 5 runs in just two overs.

He was the pick of the bowlers followed by Thinley Jamtsho and Khosi with 3 wickets respectively. The tail-enders batsmen could only manage to contribute 10 runs and 22 runs coming from extra.With 91 runs on the board BEC united needed to take early wicket to put pressure on the Vibes batting line up but Thinley Jamtsho started his inning with thundering style as he smacked boundary 4 of the first ball.

Thinley went on to make 48 runs but he couldn’t convert it to his first half century as he was bowled out by Baganath in 8th over but by the time Thinley had already placed his team on the comfortable zone. Sampath contributed valuable 19 with three boundaries and one six to see vibes first victory.

Vibes took 11 overs to finish off the match. Thinley Jamtsho was judged as man of match for his sizzling performance. Tomorrow the two favorite teams to enter the semi-final, Bhutan Telecom will face inform Youth 11.

Rigsum CC versus Pung Dzong CC played important match of their tournament today at Jigmethang ground to place their seat in semi. Pung Dzong CC won the toss and elected to field first. Due to rain, 30 overs match was scheduled. Rigsum openers couldn’t do that much this time when they lost their wickets just adding 17 runs on the score board but it was Thinley and Captain Sonam who added 116 runs to lead their total to 193 runs in 27.4 overs.

Thinley at 63 runs was run out by Susil and Sonam at 53 run was caught at cover when he tried for reverse sweep shot. Pung Dzong’s Ambrish took 3 for 9 runs in 5 overs and Lalit took 4 for 24 runs in 4 overs. “Pung Dzong’s two main players couldn’t make it for this match and suffered losing by 52 runs” said captain Kinley.

When Pung Dzong went into bat, the opener Susil started with blistering shots with 12runs in first over. They were 43 for non in their fifth overs but Ambrish was trapped on LBW of sherab’s bowl in 6 overs. Susil kept on fighting and went out at 30 runs.

Hari at 14runs and Lalit at 30 runs were other two batsmen added runs on the board. Pung Dzong were all-out in 141runs in 22 overs. Sonam with 4 for 30 in 6 overs was the highest wicket taker from Rigsum CC. "I am glad to be in semi final "said the owner of Rigsum CC. Pung Dzong could have turn the game into their game if they could have played calculating cricket but applying high risk shots and low percentage gain they lost six wicket by caught. Pung Dzong is out of the tournament but Rigsum still have one match lgainst BTCL to decide top team of the group.

Sourav Ganguly, Chris Jarris, Ian Harvey, Brian Lara and Chaminda Vaas were among their illustrious team-mates as the MCC lost by just 6 runs, chasing 165 in a Twenty20 match.

"It was a great experience," said off-spinning all-rounder Nabi after bowling four overs for 18 and taking the wicket of Kamran Akmal in a full-strength Pakistan line-up. Hamid Hassan didn't fare so well with the new ball, finding it hard to adjust to the Lord's slope in his run-up and went for 42 off his three overs, but he did hold a good catch to dismiss Salman Butt. Nabi is arguably of a class to play in any international one-day side and Hamid isn't far behind, both having impressed significantly during the recently completed ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies. After playing some more matches for the MCC, the two next join their team-mates for Afghanistan's fixtures in the ICC Pepsi World Cricket League Division 1 in the Netherlands.

Yesterday, Bhutan telecom defeated Druk Trowa by 214 runs in their second match. Jigme Singye and Shiva were the main pillars for Bhutan Telecom to rejoice their victory. At one time Druk Trowa bowlers were on top of the BT batsmen when they were 105 for 7 wickets down but the partnership build by Jigme and Shiva at unstable situation helped BT to win the match comfortably. BT won the toss and elected to bat first. BT opening batsmen had a partnership of 36 runs when they lost their first wicket of Chencho Dorji at 4 in Arpan’s bowl and in next over they lost Tashi at 17 runs in Lachumi’s bowl.

Dorji and Jigme Singye added 51 runs of partnership on the score board in 5 overs and then Dorji got caught by wicketkeeper while playing wide on leg side ball. Jigme Singye at 10 runs also got life line when he was drop by Padam at mid-on and it became costly wicket for Druk Trowa in the end when Jigme added 171 runs individually. "I am glad to set a new record in Bhutanese soil" said Jigme Singye. BT’s most of their wickets fell effortlessly and quickly but Druk Trowa couldn’t take the advantage of it when they just need three wickets to keep BT below 150 runs. BTCL’s second victory came in D/L methods. Pung Dzong CC from Punakha lost against BTCL by 55 runs in Duckworth Lewis method when heavy rain interrupted the match at 24 overs of second innings when Pung Dzong was at 183 runs for 7 wickets down. BTCL won the toss and elected to bat. BTCL openers started with great shots and also maintained the run rate of 7 runs per over but the first wicket fell of well set batsmen Ugyen Dorji when he was at 16 runs was bowled in 6 overs of Guribqal.

BTCL lost their another wicket of Tenzin in 9 overs when the score was 68 runs, and then Thinley came and set a partnership of 46 runs with opener Tandin Wangchuk who also made his first 50 runs in 44 balls. Tandin was caught at cover when he tried to go for big six of Susil’s bowl. ”I still regret for bad shot I played and I will not make this mistake again” said Tandin Wangchuk.

In 19 overs BTCL lost 4 wickets for 121 runs and to keep runs ticking on the score board, Barun was send but felt to do it when he was trapped LBW decision of Susil’s flipper. Phuntsho Wangdi the captain of team who is having a great season of his life, again scored 87 runs of 68 balls and also builds a highest runs partnership of 160 with Thinley who also came up with half century in 37 overs (56 runs of 77 balls).

There was a change in Pung Dzong batting order in second innings when Susil who batted at number 6 in the last match was send with Shamin to open. The first wicket fell of Susil when he was caught at mid-on by Tandin in Ugyen’s bowl and at that time team total runs was 18. Pung Dzong losing early wicket plus to chase target at 7.04 runs per over let Shamin inform batsmen accelerates his inning by batting aggressively smashing BTCL bowlers all over the park.

He scored 55 runs of 36 balls. Prakash and Guriqbal played a sensible batting which let their team total to 177 for 5 in 22 overs. Guriqbal became the second batsmen to smack fast fifty in just 18 balls. Guriqbal was so egger to trigger in each ball faced that he hammered both spinners of BTCL drastically to reach 57 runs from 22 balls. He was caught at mid-on when Tandin came round the wicket to distract Guriqbal concentration and got Guriqbal wicket.

The rain started pouring in 22nd overs when Pung Dzong were 177 runs for 5 wickets down and the game was stopped at 24 overs when it started raining heavily. Within those 2 overs Pung Dzong lost another two quick wickets at 183 runs for 7 wickets in 24 overs. To resume the game was not possible due to wet pitch, so the officials decided to go with the Duckworth Lewis method.

Second victory from Youth XI

On Saturday 19 June 2010 Youth XI played against BEC United and won the match in a comfortable way. BEC United won the toss and put Youth XI to bat and came up with a total score of 281 all out in 38.3 overs. Dawa and Prakash were the highest run contributors from Youth XI. Dawa came at number six and scored 50 runs from 38 balls, where also made a well-deserved partnership of 97 runs with Prakash number seven batsmen who also contributed 57 runs from 32 balls. The top five batsmen of Youth XI just added total of 50 runs hardly but 199 runs came from bottom five batsmen. A total of 249 runs came from the bat and 32 runs were added to a total from the extras given by the BEC united bowlers. Bhagawanath of BEC United was the highest wicket taker with 4 wickets for 62 runs in 7 overs. In the second innings of the match BEC United started with an opening partnership of 58 runs in 11 overs but they lost karma at 30 runs was bowled-out in prakash’s fourth ball of third over.

BEC United could have easily chased the target but due to lack of consistent, intelligent batting, they kept on losing wickets even after the batsmen were set. Youth XI pacers were able took only 4 wickets and gave always many extras but when off-spinner Raj Kumar was introduced, he took 6 wickets by conceding 38 runs in his spell of 7.3 overs. “It could have been better if our batsmen could have played more overs” said the captain of BEC united. This is the first match of BEC united and Youth XI is already making place in semi with two straight win in a bigger margin.Youth XI still have to play two matches to confirm their seat in semi and BEC United is left with 3 more matches. “I think we can qualify for semi by looking at our performances but I know it will be tougher because most of the strong teams are in group A except for Bhutan Telecom” said the captain of Youth XI. Man of the match was awarded to Raj Kumar of Youth XI with his 6 wickets halt and 19 runs.

Today, Bhutan Telecom and Vibes played their first match of the league in Jigmethang. Toss was won by Vibe’s captain Hem Kumar and decided to put Bhutan Telecom into bat. First wicket of Tashi Tshering fell in the 2nd over. Captain Dorji hopped into bat and stayed in giving a decent partnership of 51 along with Chencho but his inning came to an end when Koshi bowled him out. After the end of Dorji’s inning, Vibes took another four wickets just giving Bhutan Telecom 15 runs from those batsmen. It was Thinley and Koshi who ended the innings of four batsmen but the important wicket from those was Tandin Wangchuk’s, who was already set in. Thinley Jamtsho was the fielder who gave one hand with his full stretch body to catch Tandin out. Bhutan Telecom was at a struggle as they were just 109 for 6 wickets and it seemed like they wouldn’t even reach 150.

Then comes the Batsman number 8 Saijo, who greatly impacted the Vibes bowlers scoring fastest hundred with the use of only 61 balls. Saijo had some luck in the middle of his inning, when he was dropped by Ashis at the deep square leg but then came his real talent. His bat’s contact with the ball was tremendous and started drumming the balls in all the directions. He was the major player from Bhutan Telecom persuading the bowlers of Vibes in selling the runs to Saijo’s talent.

He created a big hope for the team to generate a huge target which Vibes could hardly chase. Bhutan Telecom’s batsmen induced 275 runs on the board from 30.3 overs. Koshi was the highest wicket taker from Vibes taking 5 for 76 runs in 10 overs.

Second inning, Thinley Jamtsho was known as the Master Blaster and Koshi, a smart cricketer. They opened the batting line. Koshi started with a boundary four where on the other side Thinley got his first run after 12 dot balls. Bhutan Telecom’s Sherab got Koshi’s wicket in the 4th over with a great outswing bowl which bowled him. Then the captain of Vibes, Hem came into bat but was sent back to the pavilion after playing only two balls and it was Tandin Wangchuks stunning caught and bowled wicket. After the two quick wicket loss, the pressure was on Thinley who was on the other end to maintain the score on the board. He started his natural game i.e. to look for more boundaries and to dominate the bowlers.

Thinley ended his inning with 35 runs on his name when he was caught and bowled by Suprit. Then the hope was almost gone for the Vibes to win this match. They started to lose wickets after their loss of Thinley’s massive wicket. The game was almost over for Vibes but the entertainment came from Tsheten who was number 7 batsman hitting a gigantic two 6’s and three 4’s. Vibes inning ended at 112 runs in just 15.4 overs. Suprit was the pick of the bowler from Bhutan Telecom taking 4 for 10 runs in just 3 overs.

Drubchu XI is out of the tournament however they have one more match to play against Rigsum CC next week. It shall not bring any hope for them to be in the top four. Drubchu faced BTCL yesterday which was vital game for them that would bring hope of surviving in this competition but BTCL was excessively good to register their first win.

BTCL won the toss and elected to bat first. BTCL scored 217 runs in 32 overs and 41 runs came from extras. BTCL's Phuntsho Wangdi was the highest scorer of 72 runs from 74 balls. Barun Wakhley who came at number nine was the Master blaster of the match by scoring first fastest fifty; he reached 50 runs in 18 balls but the total he scored was 59 runs from just 23 balls. Drubchu bowled economically well in the first hour of the match when BTCL was 52 for 4 wickets down. But when Thinley came to bat at number six, he and Phuntsho made a partnership of 60 runs which took the team's total score to 112 runs, and then Thinley's inning came to an end when he was caught and bowled by Raju.

Phuntsho was bowled by Keshap when he was at his best (72 runs) and they lost another two quick wickets of Tshering Tashi and Tenzin with just 9 runs added by them on the board. Barun who is not a genuine batsman came when BTCL was at 146 runs for 7 and started with wobbly back foot shot. However, after getting his first boundary with straight drive, he counter attacked the bowlers by hitting a six and four immediately.

Barun then hit three sixes and eight fours and then was caught at cover in Norbu’s bowl “My intention was to add more runs on the board and I did it” said Barun. Yeshi was the highest wicket taker from Drubchu’s by taking 3 for 42.

In second inning of the match Drubchu XI was all out for 81 runs in 16.3 overs . Drubchu 's openers started well but due to lack of match intelligence they were uncomfortable to keep their wickets. BTCL started with pace attack Barun and Ugyen, while Barun became so problematic to their own team as he bowled 30 balls in his two overs spell without taking any wicket. Ugyen took the first wicket of Drubchu’s opener Keshap when they were 24 runs on the board.

Tandin took 5 for 26 and Phuntsho took 3 for 2 runs.”Tandin and I, both of us had bowled many overs in International level; I think we know how to build partnership and put pressure on batsmen” said by captain Phuntsho. Drubchu’s Dawa was the only batsmen to score highest runs of 13.

Easy victory for Pung Dzong CC

Pung Dzong defeated Drubchu XI by 120 runs today in second match of BCCB Super league. Pung Dzong won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Shami and Ahmed set the highest opening partnership of 113 runs but as the match went on Drubchu’s bowler Norbu changed the whole game by take 6 for 35 runs in 7 overs. Shami was the highest scorer from Pung Dzong by scoring 58 runs in 53 balls. Pung Dzong maintained the run rate of 11.34 per over in 15 overs but Drubchu’s under pressure bowlers struggling with line and length came back after drinks break with tight fielding and correcting basic fundamental of bowling which put Pung Dzong with just 180 runs on board. When Drubchu's captain gave Norbu to ball, he was also struggling with Line and length but the moment when he started pitching up the wickets of Pung Dzong started pouring.

Drubchu XI opener Karma started with dashing leg glance but when the first wicket of Dawa felt with in swinger yoker of Alan Drubchu kept on losing wickets. The Opening bowlers of Pung Dzong were too tough for Drubchu batters to face due to their both swings and yoker ball. Few players of Dubchu were also injured by facing shot pitched bouncer of Alan and Sig Singh.

Youth XI battle out against Druk Trowa & Himalayan Adventures

BCCB Super League 2010 commenced today at Jigmethang ground, Thimphu. The opening match was played against Druk Trowa & Himalayan Adventures and Youth XI who won the match by 17 runs. Youth XI won the toss and elected to bat. The 1st innings started with magnificent catch caught by Sonam at shot cover of Jable bowled by Lakshmi in his third ball of second overs. Youth XI maintained the runs rate at 7.31 runs per over but could not able to keep their wickets which let them set with only 118 runs in 15.3overs where 53 runs came from extras.

“We the won match but I am not happy with my team members because they are not playing 50 overs match and we have to be serious now” said team captain Subash. Druk Trowa’s pace bowler took wickets but land up paying too much extras but when spinner was introduced the game completely went into Druk Trowa’s hand. Biswa and Sultan was the highest scorer by adding 26 of 28 and 24 of 23.

In the 2nd inning two openers had 28 runs partnership but when first wicket knock down Druk Trowa started losing wickets. The only batsmen who score double digits were the Yeshey Samdrup with 27 runs of 89 balls. And again it was same with Youth XI who gave away 53 extras which made them almost lost the game.

At one situation it was Druk Trowa’s game when they just needed 45 runs from 25 overs but with high risk shot and low percentage gain Druk Trowa’s batters went they slack their momentum and lost the game by very close margin. Youth XI pacers collected some wickets but gave away many extras but when Subash the slow arm pacer bowled with line and length to Trowa’s middle orders they game completely changed. DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS DEVELOP

The ten Development Officers from the ICC's five Development Regions (Africa, America, Asia, East Asia - Pacific, Europe) have returned from Dubai where they attended the second ever ICC Development and Performance Officers Forum. Topics discussed at the four-day Forum ranged from administration to finance, governance, community cricket and High Performance Programs (HPP) in the respective regions.

The over-riding theme of the four days was of how to take cricket forward in all regions.

Delegates were involved in discussions in Assessor and Presenter Training, Coach Education and the new Cricket Administrator Programme (CAP). CAP has been introduced to assist the management of their national bodies. It contains four main modules; how to hold ‘Effective Meetings’, ‘Financial Management’ and how to deliver ‘Community Cricket’ and ‘Governance’. Further modules which will include ‘Sponsorship and Marketing’ will be developed soon. The Development Officers raised various problems they faced and were given specific guidelines to follow by the ICC to counter these issues. There were also guidelines on how to achieve their various targets up to 2012.

ACC Development Officer Aminul Islam says, “The long-term target is for all countries to become self-sustainable in terms of governance and training. This Forum was very educational for us all and has opened our eyes and shown us where Asia stands in terms of cricket development.”

The main objectives submitted by the ACC Development Officers in their Education and Training, Development and Implementation Plan to the ICC were to: increase the numbers of Level II and Level III coaches and umpires and curators, and to also retain good coaches by offering them full-time coaching jobs. Their main focus is to provide more High Performance Programs for the Asian participants in ICC tournaments and to develop Chinese cricket.

Towards the end of the Forum, delegates were given a tour of the new and close to full completion ICC Global Cricket Academy (GCA). “The GCA is a fascinating arena for cricketers. The facilities are well maintained and as a cricketer everything is there. Pitches from different countries have been built for players to adjust to various conditions,” added Aminul.

Speaking on the ICC website, Head Coach Daylee Hadlee focuses on the benefits of the GCA’s cricket programme. “It will help the player become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses and the programme is more specific. It always comes down to performing the basics well and as a coach that is what I try and get established with a player.”

DEVELOPMENT OFFICERS IN DUBAI

Development Officers from the ICC's five development regions are about to gather in Dubai for an ICC Development and Performance Officers Forum. The forum will have eight speakers from the ICC speaking on topics such as the 'ICC Development Programme 2009 and 2010', 'The Role of Member Services', 'ICC Research Data and Collection' and 'International Cricket in 2020'.

Delegates will share their methods of coaching and training in their respective regions and data will also be collected from them on how they run their domestic courses. Education and Training will be an important focus during the Forum. Prior to their arrival in Dubai the delegates were asked to complete a country SWOT (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) Analysis document where they select one country from their region in which they think enhanced cricket education and training would confer the most benefit.

ACC Development Manager Bandula Warnapura says, “This is the first time all three of our Development Officers are going for such a meeting. It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to discuss ACC’s future plans and also to get valuable input from the ICC. With their international experience I am confident they will contribute a lot and also gain more knowledge in conducting future High Performance Programs.”

The Forum will also have brainstorming sessions and regional and country focus talks on developing a regional and country education and training plans in each of the five ICC regions (Africa, America, Asia, East Asia - Pacific, Europe). During their time in Dubai, delegates will also be taken on a tour of the brand new ICC Global Cricket Academy (GCA) by its Head Coach Dayle Hadlee.

“It will be interesting to discuss different strategies and get good feedback. We have corresponded with the ICC many times but this time we can physically project our views and plans as to how swiftly Asia is progressing,” said ACC Development Officer Aminul Islam.

RODNEY BAY, St. Lucia, 1 May -- Indian and Afghanistan cricketers go head-to-head for the first time ever 1 May in the International Cricket Council World Twenty20 Tournament. But off the field, the teams are putting their bats aside to join forces to "Bowl Out Polio" in India and Afghanistan - two of only four countries remaining in the world battling the transmission of this crippling virus.

Indian Batsman Suresh Raina and Afghan Captain Nowroz Mangal exchanged “Bowl Out Polio” cricket bats autographed by members of each team to show regional solidarity to eliminate the polio virus from India and Afghanistan. “It is our obligation as athletes to make sure every child has the opportunity to run and to play,” said Suresh Raina. “We are happy to come together with the Afghanistan team for this important cause.”

Polio is a virus which cripples and kills young children. While most of the world has been polio-free for years, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria remain the only countries that have never stopped poliovirus transmission.

Progress is being made, particularly in India, where the most dangerous type 1 wild poliovirus (WPV1) has not been reported in the polio-endemic states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in a record five months. Afghanistan also has been free of WPV1 since 8 January. India has recorded 19 cases in 2010, compared to 36 at this time last year, while Afghanistan has recorded eight cases - two more than at this time last year. Globally, there have been 84 cases of polio this year, compared to 383 at this time in 2009.

As long as India and Afghanistan continue to see polio transmission, all of their neighbors are at high risk of re-infection. In recent weeks, both Nepal and Tajikistan have been re-infected with poliovirus. Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are providing emergency funds to facilitate immediate outbreak response activities in these countries.

“India is very close to becoming polio-free,” said Karin Hulshof, UNICEF Representative in India. “Every parent in India needs to continue vaccinating their children with polio drops each time it is offered until they are five-years-old. Every dose holds the promise of a healthy childhood.”

Cricketers in India have been intensively involved with the polio eradication effort since 2003, when the “Bowl Out Polio” campaign was launched by Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan. Today, players promote OPV vaccination nationally, and especially in the endemic states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Since 2007, more than 40 per cent of type 1 polio cases outside UP and Bihar in India have occurred in migrant communities, underlining how critical it is for children to be vaccinated before they travel. “If we do not end polio in India, the rest of the world will suffer,” said Indian captain MS Dhoni, “Every parent must vaccinate their children regardless of travel schedules, work or anything else in our busy lives. Nothing is more important than our children’s future.”

In Afghanistan, polio has been largely restricted to Helmand and Kandahar where access to children has been compromised by ongoing conflict. Limited female service providers, an inadequate health infrastructure and regular population movements across the border into polio-infected Pakistan are other difficulties faced.

Yet despite these challenges and dangers, every year thousands of dedicated vaccinators go door-to-door for six nationwide polio vaccination campaigns organized by the Afghan Ministry of Public Health with support from UNICEF, WHO, Rotary International and other partners. Sub-national campaigns are also held in areas with persistent transmission. In 2009, approximately 7.5 million children were reached with oral polio vaccine (OPV).

Education and OPV are considered to be inextricably linked in Afghanistan, and among the most critical rights for children’s development. “My future as a cricket player was secured a long time ago, when I was a child,” says Raees Ahmadzai, member of the Afghan Cricket Team and founder of Afghan Youth Cricket Support Organization (AYCSO). “Vaccination is essential to protect our children from the crippling disease of polio. Education is the social vaccine to boost our society. Both are essential for the future of both girls and boys.”

Today over 6.8 million children are enrolled in primary education, including 1.8 million girls. Simultaneously, demand for health services has also increased. “Educated girls are educated mothers, who will make the right decisions for their children. Together we can ‘bowl out polio and kick in education,” said Catherine Mbengue, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan.

Dr. Bruce Aylward, the Director of the Polio Eradication Initiative at WHO, paid tribute to the Afghanistan and India cricket teams for raising awareness of this issue at such a critical time. "Right now we have the best chance we've ever had to end polio forever," Dr Aylward said. The greatest threat to finishing the job remains a $1.4 billion funding gap to eradicate polio globally by end-2012. "These cricket stars are challenging the global community to stand up," Dr Aylward said, "The world must not squander this unique opportunity to bowl out polio once and for all."

BABA SOURJAH RETURNS TO GUIDE BHUTAN

Former Bhutan national coach Baba Sourjah has returned to the Thunder Kingdom after four years. Sourjah coached the national team from 2003 to 2006 and is in Thimpu for three weeks to train Bhutan’s coaches. He will also work with the Under-16 boys and the Under-19 girls teams.

A naturalized Sri Lankan who has lived in Australia since 1973, Mr. Sourjah is a Level III accredited coach and is currently the High Performance Coach with the South Brisbane District Cricket Club. He is “an amazing skills coach” according to ACC Development Officer for Bhutan Rumesh Ratnayake.

“Baba is brilliant when it comes to his cricket drills. A real disciplinarian, he is given a lot of respect from the Bhutan cricketers and firmly believes that before you start playing cricket on the field, you must first begin off it,” says Mr. Ratnayake.

A day-to-day program has been drawn up by Mr. Sourjah and he has been working on the various drills with the coaches, under-16 boys and under-19 girls. “I am impressed by the under-19 girls. I work with women cricketers in Australia and these girls have good coordination and good running and training skills. They really can go far,” says Mr. Sourjah.

Speaking from Thimphu, Mr. Sourjah went on to say that if Bhutan wanted to develop their talent, they’d have to improve on their facilities and fast. “It is disappointing to see because when I was last here in 2006, Bhutan were maybe peaking. In 2007, a synthetic centre wicket and three nets were removed as the premises was used for the function of the crowning of Bhutan’s new king.

“Now there are no more wickets and the level of cricket has dropped. This really hampers Bhutan’s progress. A bowling machine is just sitting here because without proper facilities it cannot be used,” he added. Off the six grounds available for practice in Bhutan, there are no turf pitches," said Bhutan's veteran coach.

Sourjah is optimistic of girls cricket in Bhutan

In his sessions, Mr. Sourjah first demonstrates various skill-building drills to the coaches and then guides the coaches as they work with the players. Almost all of the coaches he’s currently training are players in the national team.. Bhutan’s National Coaching Coordinator and National Coach Damber Gurung credits his cricketing knowledge and skills to his former coach. “He has such love for the country and cricket and has done a lot for all of us. There is so much confidence he inspires in us all and with his guidance and exercises, the cricketers of Bhutan are sure to benefit greatly.”

Mr. Sourjah hopes to revisit Bhutan in the coming months and may also accompany the Under-16s to Malaysia for the ACC U-16 Challenge Cup in July.
