Thirsty Thursday: Looking Great for Your Wedding

Happy Thursday! Many of you know that I attended my sister's wedding this past weekend. It was a wonderful time spent with friends and family, celebrating an amazing occasion. And as you know, or at least in the South, with June beginning tomorrow, wedding season is upon us. I was a June bride myself, back in June 2004. One day I promise to share the photos with you, of that whirlwind of a fabulous day!

Looking Great for Your Wedding

There is an almost impossible amount of preparation involved in setting up a wedding – you have to find venues for different events, figure out your guest list, send out the invites, etc., and that’s all without getting down to the details! It’s perfectly natural that, in the midst of all of this, the most personal sort of preparation can be easy to overlook. However, you also need to make sure that you yourself are looking your absolute best on your wedding day. Not only is this simply nice for you and your husband or wife-to-be, but you will also be looking at photographs from your wedding day for the rest of your life – it would be nice to look your best in those photos! So, here are a few suggestions for how to start making sure that you look as nice as possible on the day of the wedding.

• Start getting in shape now, not later. Plenty of people tell themselves that they’ll be in the best shape of their lives for their weddings – but then, as mentioned previously, the planning gets in the way, and it becomes tough to take time to exercise. This is how people end up with a few weeks to go, telling themselves that a short jog every day in that time period will make a difference. However, if you truly want to shed all of your extra weight and look like you’re in top shape for your wedding, you should start getting in shape as early as possible. A few months of consistent exercise will make just about anyone look better, so starting early is well worth it.

• Work on the little things as well. Getting in shape seems like the main priority to a lot of people who are about to get married, but you also want to make sure that your face looks great for wedding photos. Visit topdentists.com for information on fast and effective teeth whitening; explore different skin care products to make sure your skin is smooth and unblemished; make sure that your hair is the right style and length by the day of the wedding. These touches can contribute hugely to how you look on the big day.

• Finally, when you’re picking out your suit or dress, don’t succumb to the idea of doing something just because it’s unique. Of course, you can still get creative if you want, but don’t forget to dress like you. You don’t want to look like someone else’s idea on your wedding, so while it can be tempting to try something outlandish with your attire, you may appreciate it in the years to come if you stick to your own personal style – after all, this is what your fiancé loves anyway!

And there's nothing like toasting with a little bubbly to celebrate your new life together...and the many many celebrations you TWO have to look forward to!

Fashion Friday (Early): ANTM Finale Tonight! British Summer Dress Styles

Confession: I've watched all EIGHTEEN seasons of America's Next Top Model. Yes, some say it's all about Tyra on the show, but I've looked passed that, and have always LOVED the competition between the girls. The photo shoots are always fun to watch, especially to see the final photo they choose during the judgings. This season was by far my favorite: Season 18: British Invasion! They chose British models that had competed on Britain's Next Top Model before, and matched them up against an equal number of American models.

Tonight, it's down to two....Sophie (England) and Laura (America). My favorite part has been listening to the British girls' lingo. And Ashley, from Scotland? They had to use subtitles when she spoke! Catch tonight's final episode at 9:00pm, to see whether Sophie or Laura will win the title of becoming America's Next Top Model! I'm Team Sophie!

Monday Manners: American Etiquette

Happy Monday! I hope most of you are enjoying your extra vacation day! Thought this was pretty entertaining - As an American, not specifically a Southerner today, enjoy these tips on having good manners in America, as written by a British Professional Translating Service.

Customs and Etiquette in the U.S.A

Meeting and Greeting
Greetings are casual.
A handshake, a smile, and a 'hello' are all that is needed.
Smile!
Use first names, and be sure to introduce everyone to each other.

Gift Giving Etiquette
In general, Americans give gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and major holidays, such as Christmas.
A gift can be as simple as a card and personal note to something more elaborate for a person with whom you are close.
Gift giving is not an elaborate event, except at Christmas.
When invited to someone's home for dinner, it is polite to bring a small box of good chocolates, a bottle of wine, a potted plant or flowers for the hostess.
Gifts are normally opened when received.

Dining Etiquette
Americans socialise in their homes and ‘backyards’, in restaurants and in other public places.
It's not at all unusual for social events to be as casual as a backyard barbecue or a picnic in the park.
Arrive on time if invited for dinner; no more than 10 minutes later than invited to a small gathering. If it is a large party, it is acceptable to arrive up to 30 minutes later than invited.
Table manners are more relaxed in the U.S. than in many other countries.
The fork is held in the right hand and is used for eating. The fork is held tines down. The knife is used to cut or spread something. To use the knife, the fork is switched to the left hand. To continue eating, the fork is switched back to the right hand.
If you have not finished eating, cross your knife and fork on your plate with the fork over the knife. Indicate you have finished eating by laying your knife and fork parallel across the right side of your plate.
If you are more comfortable eating in the Continental manner, go ahead. It will not offend anyone.
Feel free to refuse specific foods or drinks without offering an explanation.
Many foods are eaten by hand.
Food is often served family-style, which means that it is in large serving dishes and passed around the table for everyone to serve themselves.
Do not begin eating until the hostess starts or says to begin.
Remain standing until invited to sit down.
Do not rest your elbows on the table.
Put your napkin in your lap as soon as you sit down.
Leave a small amount of food on your plate when you have finished eating.

Wednesday Whereabouts: School's Out for the Summer

This past week has been a lot of fun, but super busy. Both girls had their end of year parties, along with our neighborhood picnic, and prepping everything for my sister's wedding this weekend. I was running around (last minute, of course) trying to find W a pretty bow to match her flower girl dress, some shoes (not ivory, not white...I found pearl) and getting her sweet, little dress altered. You know I'll come with loads of photos from this weekend, next Wednesday! I'm so excited to get everything rolling...I know my sister is too!

Here's a recap from this week's whereabouts...I apologize I didn't include more photos of myself (as many of you readers have requested recently). I promise to make more of an effort to get in them!

Tuesday Trends: Beach Essentials

Hey Y'all! So I normally don't re-post, but since I won't be heading to the beach for our usual Memorial Day Beach Weekend (I'll be at my sister's wedding this year), I figured I'd pull out an old post from last year, posted the week before Memorial Day weekend. For all of you lucky enough to be traveling to the beach this Memorial Day, or even this summer, enjoy!

Previous Post (from May 2011): Well, we're off to the beach for the long weekend. I'm hoping we didn't leave anything. I always consider this my trial run, since it's the shorter of the beach trips we'll be taking this summer, and if anything is forgotten, at least it will prepare me for the longer beach trips later on. If any of y'all are headed to the beach, as well, I thought I'd prepare a list of beach essentials that are important for any beach trip! Plus, getting my list together made me get more organized for packing, which is always a huge plus! If I've left anything out, let me know! I already realized I forgot to include a photo of my camera, beach toys, hat and iPad. Anything else?

Bathing suits for the whole family, life jackets for the boat and swim diapers for E.

Sandals and flip flops...to be broken in ;)

And running shoes, if feeling motivated enough.

Monday Manners: Emily Post's Etiquette, Emily's Bachelorette

First off, I want to thank everyone for the incredible feedback on the Nike vs. Lululemon debate. I'm hoping to get into the store sometime next week, and check everything out. I'll be back to give y'all a report as soon as I do! In addition, a BIG thanks to those of you who voted for me in the Elizabeth McKay photo contest. I checked my votes sometime on Friday (the day the contest ended) and I was in the top ten. There wasn't a prize for the top ten winners, but that was my personal goal, and y'all made it happen!

This weekend was very relaxing, with wonderful weather. My husband's parents kept the girls overnight on Friday night, and L, the hubs and I took full advantage of the girls' absence. We ate at a delicious Thai restaurant (DeeJai) for those of you Charlotteans, and we got to sleep in on Saturday (still missed seeing their smiling faces when we got up though). Little L didn't wake up until close to 9! It's the little things. We also attended our neighborhood picnic Saturday evening, and had the best time (photos to come on Wednesday). Sunday was church and we also had a hamburger cook-out with some of our friends to wrap up the weekend.

Emily Post's Etiquette: Manners for a New World was published this past October, the 18th edition! This book is mammoth (and it's about two inches thick, too!). I'm not kidding. Need proof?

I can't wait to use it! It's been seven years since the last edition, and a lot has changed in our world (especially technology etiquette), since early 2000. I'm hoping to include my newest Monday Manners posts with parts of this book.

Did anyone else not think she said "Charlotte" a million times??

Fashion Friday: Lululemon vs. Nike

You can never go wrong with the always tried and true Nike Tempo Shorts. These are on sale right now at the Nike Store, for only $26 (plus, use code: GRANDSLAM to receive an extra 20% off, making them only $20!).

Have you tried Lululemon? I'm the first to admit I've never tried their line, yet. They do have a store close to me, at South Park, but I haven't had a chance to get over there and try them out. I'm sure when I get in there, I'm going to be overwhelmed. Is there a great top or bottom (or BOTH) that I MUST-HAVE?

The Great Debate: I've always loved my Nike work-out apparel. Is Lululemon really that much better? Just trying to see if all the hype matches the quality of their products. It's a lot of dough to shell out for work-out clothes, but if they're really worth it, I'm all in!

Thirsty Thursday: Margaritas, A Baby Shower and Lilly

I'm sure I've done a margarita recipe on here before, but I was really craving one today. I couldn't resist sharing this one (discovered it on epicurious). Based on the reviews, it sounds like a hit, that I just may have to whip up sometime SOON!

"Eben Freeman, bartender of Tailor Restaurant in New York City, developed this adaptation of a classic cocktail. Reposado tequila, aged in oak for at least two months but less than a year, gives the drink a smooth smokiness. If you prefer a more vegetal flavor, you could substitute blanco (unaged) tequila; it's probably best to steer clear of añejo (aged in oak for at least a year but less than three years), which could darken the hue and add unwanted oak, vanilla, or caramel flavors.
To sweeten his Margarita, Freeman trades the traditional sugar syrup for superfine sugar, which gives the drink a slightly grainy texture. Freeman's final signature touch: Only half the glass gets a salted rim."

1/4 cup kosher salt
1 wedge lime
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) fresh lime juice
2 heaping teaspoons superfine sugar
1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) Cointreau or other triple sec orange liqueur
1/4 cup (2 ounces) reposado tequila
About 2 cups ice cubes

Spread salt on small plate. Rub lime wedge halfway around rim of 10-ounce glass (such as double old-fashioned). Dip moistened side of glass in salt to lightly coat. Set aside.
In cocktail shaker, stir together lime juice and sugar until sugar partially dissolves (about 5 seconds). Add Cointreau, tequila, and 1 cup ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 25 seconds, then strain into prepared glass. Fill glass with remaining ice cubes.

Wednesday Whereabouts: GiGi Phone Wallet Giveaway!

I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend. Ours was a little bittersweet, as my grandmother (the one who just passed away a couple of months ago) would have celebrated her birthday, Mother's Day AND her anniversary ALL in one weekend. The sweetest thing is the that she left an anniversary card in one of the drawers of their house (that she knew my grandfather would look in) because she knew she may pass before they celebrated their special day. He found it and showed it to all of his family that visited him this past Friday, on my grandmother's birthday.

On Saturday, we celebrated my mom's birthday at their house, with a hamburger cook-out. We also had my parents and almost all of my sisters (missing one) over on Sunday for a shrimp and grits bar. The hubs grilled it up on the Egg and it was amazing! Complete with shredded cheese and bacon to top it off.

My youngest sister (#6) who just graduated last week from USC, and me (#1).

What Did You Do Today, Honey?

A man came home from work and found his three children outside, still in their pajamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard.The door of his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house and there was no sign of the dog.

Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door.

He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened. He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls.

As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, 'What happened here today?' She again smiled and answered, 'You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?' 'Yes,' was his incredulous reply. She answered, 'Well, today I didn't do it.'

Fashion Friday: Last-Minute Mother's Day Gifts

If you're looking for that last minute gift for your mother, look no further! Here are some wonderful ideas for moms of all ages!

Pajama Sets

I'm in love with Bedhead pajamas, but really any cute set will do. Add a gift card to Starbucks or her favorite coffee to the gift, and you're good to go.

Candles

My favorite is anything by Nest! But if you know her favorite, grab her one. She'll use it often, and every time she lights it, she'll think of you!

Wine Club

The gift that keeps on giving, all year long! We received this for a wedding gift from dear friends, and absolutely loved it. It was always a little surprise receiving a fun red and white wine in the mail each month, for an entire year! We sure were sad when it ended though... I've never used the wine club that the above link takes you to, but it was featured in People Magazine, if that makes it more credible for you.

Spa Gift Card to Her Favorite Place

No mother complains about getting too much pampering. No doubt she'll use this little baby in no time flat. And she deserves it!

Kindle/Nook/ITunes Gift Card

For a mother that loves to read and/or listens to music, this gift is perfect. This way she can decide what book/music she wants, and you're not stuck in the book store deciding what she'll enjoy most.

Framed Photos or Canvases

I know many mothers receive photos in the mail from family or even order photos online, but many times with how busy they are (including myself), the photos get thrown into a drawer somewhere, until they have time to get a good frame that fits. And the next thing you know, you're searching all over for those pictures. That's where a framed photo/canvas comes into play. This way they open it, and use it on the spot. I order mine from Snapfish a lot, and mail them straight to the recipients (especially grandparents that don't live here). I believe they're 19.99 for an 8x10 framed photo. Get on their email list, they always have a great promo going on. Also, get on Canvas People's email list. They're forever sending me free canvas promos. You still have to pay shipping, usually $15, but that's it!

Roses

I know it sounds cliche, but instead of roses in a vase, consider rose bushes. My husband has given his mother a rose bush every year for awhile, and she now has quite the collection in her backyard.

Hope these gifts help spark an idea for you!

And if nothing else, mothers always appreciate handmade art from their children/grandchildren.

W made me a necklace for Mother's Day this year, and she loves that I sport it everyday.

A gift early, you ask? She made it in school, and couldn't wait all the way to Sunday to open it for me and let me wear it. ;)

Thirsty Thursday: Mother's Day Blackberry Champagne Cocktail

I may have to concoct a few of these this weekend. Found the recipe on www.drinkoftheweek.com. It sounds delicious!

"No Mother’s Day brunch is complete without a champagne cocktail! This blackberry champagne cocktail is beautiful and brightly colored, with fresh blackberries lending a purple hue. No matter what you serve, this refreshing cocktail will look great next to it."

Ingredients:
¾ oz blackberry simple syrup*
1-1.5 oz gin (depending on how strong Mom likes her drinks)
Sparkling wine
Fresh blackberries for garnish
Directions:
Put two blackberries in a champagne flute. Pour in blackberry simple syrup and gin, then carefully top off with sparkling wine.

*Blackberry Simple Syrup
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 basket of blackberries
Directions:
Bring all ingredients to a boil. Strain into a container, pressing the blackberries to push juice through the stainer.

Your Children Want YOU!

There’s this crazy phenomenon going on right now. Good, devoted mothers get on Pinterest . . . and blogs . . . and Facebook . . . and Twitter . . . and then they flip through parenting magazines and TV channels (full of advertisements and media hype) . . . and they’re convinced they’re not enough.

They’re convinced that everyone else has magnetic, alphabetized spice containers,

and unless their garden parties are thematically accessorized with butterfly lanterns,

and they’re wearing the latest fashions (in a size two, of course), there’s no point in even showing up for the day.

Last Saturday, this happened to me.

I came home from a lovely day out with my extended family and had serious intentions to spend the evening dyeing Easter eggs and making bunny buns.

By the time I got everyone settled and fed, however, I was so tired that I just laid on the couch and dozed while my children played and got themselves to bed.

Around 8:30, when I finally had the energy to sit up, I decided to try out Pinterest for a few minutes until my husband got home. There it was–1,000 reasons why I’m failing at all things domestic.

I don’t make grilled cheese sandwiches look like ice cream.

I don’t even have seasonal throw pillows on my couches or live plants anywhere in the house.

Is it really so hard? Can’t I pull myself together and wrap some candles in green foliage and bring happiness to our decor with bright fabrics and hand-crafted photo frames?

As I was trying to calm my frenzied state of mind, my husband came home and held me tight. We talked about our day, and he told me how much he loves me and that he wants our boys to marry someone like me. I fell asleep snuggled under his arm.

The following morning, our children enthusiastically bounded into our bedroom and tucked themselves into our covers. My four-year-old gave me an arm massage, and we all sat there together–joking, laughing, planning the day ahead, and enjoying that special feeling of family. Reflecting on the discouragement I’d felt the night before, I realized that my family doesn’t care about what I see on Pinterest. They care about me.

My daughter Grace loves me to sing “Baby Mine” to her each night before bed. When I go to our Power of Moms Retreats, she misses that special ritual. We have recordings of Michael Crawford and Allison Krauss singing their versions, but Grace doesn’t want those. She wants me. So I recorded myself singing “Baby Mine” and emailed the audio file to her and to my husband so Grace can hear “her song” before she sleeps. As far as she’s concerned, my untrained voice belongs at the top of the charts.

: My daughter Grace is my “snuggliest” child. Back tickles and “Baby Mine” each night are how I show that I love her.

A few months ago, I was practicing sideways dutch braids on my two daughters. They had found these great “how-to” videos online, and we set up our comb, brush, and hair bands in front of the computer so I could become an expert.

Half-way through the braid, my fingers got all tangled up, the hair was too loose, and one of my daughters had been sitting with her head to the side for several minutes.

Feeling extremely frustrated, I said, “That little girl in the video is so lucky to have a mom who knows how to do hair.”

My daughter stopped me in my tracks when she responded, “But I have a mom who is trying.”

: These are my two girls with the braids that took me FOREVER to do. (But I’m getting faster now, and they appreciate the fact that I’m trying.)

My mom is in her 70s, and her memory is starting to go. Her sweetness and love are as strong as ever, but when we talk on the phone, she can’t remember the last time we spoke or the last time we saw each other.

At the end of one phone call a few weeks ago, I whispered, “I miss you, Mom.”

She said, “Oh, I miss you, too! But we’ll get together soon. You can come down to the park, and we’ll get an ice cream cone at McDonald’s.”

I replied, “Yes, that will be fun.” But then the tears started, and I had to use every ounce of control to keep my voice even so she wouldn’t know I was crying.

What I really meant was, “I miss being able to talk to you, Mom. I miss laying on the grass while my children make a hopscotch and savoring our long phone conversations. I miss you remembering all those secrets I used to tell you. I miss you asking me if I’m okay. I miss seeing you read books and hearing you sing while you do the dishes and having you drive out to my house without getting lost. I miss you remembering how much I need you.”

My mother didn’t specialize in home decor or gourmet cooking, and she didn’t lift weights or run marathons. But she makes me feel like I am the most important, wonderful person ever born. If I could pick any mother in the whole world, it would be my mom.

There’s something deeper going on in family life than can ever be expressed on a social network. Whatever it is we feel we are lacking, can we collectively decide–as deliberate mothers–that we are not going to sit around feeling discouraged about all the things we’re not?

Can we remind each other that it is our uniqueness and love that our children long for? It is our voices. Our smiles. Our jiggly tummies. Of course we want to learn, improve, exercise, cook better, make our homes lovelier, and provide beautiful experiences for our children, but at the end of the day, our children don’t want a discouraged, stressed-out mom who is wishing she were someone else.

If you ever find yourself looking in the mirror at a woman who feels badly that she hasn’t yet made flower-shaped soap,
