Thirsty Thursday: US Marine Corps Martini + Memorial Day Weekend Sales Galore

I found this cocktail recipe on allrecipes.com, and think it is so cool, and the perfect cocktail to serve this holiday weekend. A weekend to remember, and to celebrate all those who have lost their lives fighting for our country. I can't say it enough, thank you, to all those who have served, and continue to serve!

US Marine Corps Martini

Yields 6 Servings

"The US Marine Corps was founded in Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 1775 in a tavern during the American Revolutionary War. The name of the tavern was 'Tun Tavern.' There is an exact replica of Tun Tavern at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. It was at Quantico in this Tun Tavern that the US Marine Corps Martini was born over 50 years ago. It has been made and served all over the world. Is it a killer martini? More on that later. It is sometimes referred to as the 5-4-3-2-1 Martini. To your health and good cheer! 'Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share.'"

5 (1.5 fluid ounce) jiggers vodka
4 (1.5 fluid ounce) jiggers gin
3 cubes ice
2 (1.5 fluid ounce) jiggers pale dry sherry
1 1/2 fluid ounces water

Directions

Pour vodka, gin, ice cubes, sherry, and water into a glass container and freeze until mix is slushy, at least 3 hours. At the same time, freeze martini glasses.
Pour martinis into glasses, straining out any remaining ice cubes.

Footnotes from AllRecipes.com:

"Lots of folks figure that because these are US Marine Corps Martinis they must be wildly strong. This is not at all the case. Most professional bartenders serve a martini in which the ratio is four (or five) parts gin to one part vermouth. The vermouth is itself 16% to 18% alcohol. The Marine Corps Martini is indeed much milder. There are nine parts liquor to five parts dry sherry and water. This is a martini in which the liquor ratio is 1.8 to 1. Not only is the mixture half as strong as the normal martini, the one part water and three ice cubes further reduces the alcohol content. These are not Marine Corps killer martinis.
The problem is that these martinis are so smooooth, one tends to drink them too fast and drink too many. One or two are enough - and beyond that be sure to name your designated driver!!
Serve the martini, as is your custom, with olives or a twist. Or serve with pickled onions, changing it from a martini to a Gibson. Serve with an olive and an onion, and you have a Gibtini."

Wednesday Whereabouts

This past week has been a whirlwind, but we've enjoyed every minute of it. Cannot believe this school year has come to a close, and that W will be a kindergartner in the fall!

This was the girls' last week of school. This school year has seriously flown by!

Since W has a summer birthday, we celebrated with her class, on the last day of school, at their end-of-year party. This girl is going to be spoiled with all of these "fake" birthdays.

After fixing W's hair like this last week, she has requested it almost every single day.

The last day of school! E will be in the 3's class in the fall, and W will be in Kindergarten.

We attended E's end-of-year party first, at a classmate's home. Since this was their backyard, you can understand why I have no photos from E's party. I was chasing L down, almost the entire time!

School's out for the summer! We're ready for beach trips and pool time, and some much needed rest and relaxation. No more prepping lunches and having to wake up V, to drop the girls off at school, and then picking them up again.

How I Do It: Remembering the Memories

Always have your video camera charged and nearby. Recording big milestones is the most important thing I feel like I can do to, to savor so many memories I have, of my quickly growing children. There are so many times when I think, oh, I'm definitely going to remember that moment forever, but as time goes by, memories do fade. It's no secret that I love to take pictures, but it still doesn't do justice to actual footage. I feel like when you record little segments every so often, it gives you (and your children when they're older) a glimpse into how they used to be, their mannerisms, their ever-changing personalities, etc. I just think it's really neat.

Learning by example. My parents always recorded big events, and other random moments too (first day of school, first time on the school bus, etc.). I love looking back at them, especially when my sisters are around, and we can reminisce. My mom also did a wonderful job of organizing the tapes, even changing them over to DVDs for us (her six girls), and giving us all a set. One thing she has always said is to use our old video camera, and we do. I feel like with the little clips we get on our iPhones, while they're great, sometimes they get lost in the computer, amongst photos, and it's hard to find them at times. I know it's odd that we still use our older camera, with the small tapes, that I know I'll have to eventually change over to DVDs, but it's great that it's one continuous reel. So we may record three minutes here, then four minutes there, but when you watch it, it's so neat to see all of the segments altogether.

Don't over-record. One thing's for sure, DO NOT record for longer than thirty minutes, especially if it's a sporting event. Those are the worst. You enjoy seeing yourself the first time hitting the ball in t-ball, but after watching yourself get up to bat for the sixth time, it gets old. I must admit, we have so much more footage of W, than we do of any of our three others right now. But it was the fact that she was our first, and I had so much more free time to record her every little milestone/movement. Now, life is busy, but I never make it too busy to forget about the video camera. Even just a short clip of little V's face, or his laugh, which is so wonderful to hear now, it will be that much sweeter when I listen to his sweet little giggle when I'm older, and he is too.

Christmas Eve 2012

A really cool, simple Christmas tradition. Every Christmas Eve, ever since I was a young girl, my parents would record us hanging our stockings. While it seems like such a sweet, short clip, my parents made it into something more special, and we still enjoy doing it to this day, and will also continue the tradition with our growing families. My dad would set up the camera on his tripod, and have each of us, one at a time, stand in front of the fireplace with our stocking, and he and my mom would ask us questions (never rehearsed or written down, always questions off the top of their heads). Some questions were simple, "What's your favorite color? Who are some of your friends? What school do you go to?" Even those were neat to see, how our answers changed from year to year. Other questions consisted of "Who's your boyfriend?" "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What big event in your life happened this year?" "Who are you going to marry?" I'm sure you can imagine the chattering and giggling from the other sisters, as questions were asked and answered. Many times the peanut gallery would go too far, and either something was edited out (a huge fight broke out), or the camera was shut off for a moment ("Turn that thing off for a second!"), so we could regain our composure, sometimes after being disciplined. Whatever the footage was, it was hilarious, and we still love looking back at old videos, and watching ourselves at different ages. Sometimes we were way too cool for it ("Daddy, hurry up, I don't want to do this anymore!"). Other times we were spastic, and couldn't stop being goofy. Whatever it was that year, it was something we'd cherish. Not only was this just a fun annual tradition, it also connected us to each other, and made our family closer, as I'm sure it would for your family too. Oh, and the best part, was after we answered our questions, we each had to sing a Christmas Carol, before hanging up our stocking on the mantle. The younger years of the songs were the sweetest. And the finale is always all of us standing in front of the camera and singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas!"

Thirsty Thursday: Cucumber Cocktail, Tory Burch Sale and C.Wonder

With the weather finally warming up, I was in search of a refreshing cocktail, and came across Bobby's Flay's cocktail here.

Cucumber Cocktail

Yield: 4 Servings

Ingredients
1 cup cucumber vodka
1 cup tonic water
1/2 cup cucumber juice
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup simple syrup (equal amounts sugar and water heated until sugar dissolves; cool)
Handful fresh mint leaves
Ice cubes, for serving

Directions
Divide the ingredients in half, add each half to a cocktail shaker and shake to combine. Pour over rocks glasses filled with ice and serve.

Wednesday Whereabouts: Mountains and Mother's Day

My keyboard is finally fixed! Here's what we've been up to...

On Friday, we headed up to the mountains with friends for the weekend.

Their house was perfection, and exactly what we needed. Relaxation and fresh air.

L and their daughter are one week apart, and had the best time in each other's company!

Wine at night, and fun guns and excursions by day. A great trip!

We did lots of exploring too.

We then celebrated Mother's Day at my parents' new house on Sunday, which we loved by the way!

We were missing a couple of families, but still had a wonderful time.

We also celebrated my mom's birthday, which was also on Mother's Day.

Had the best time celebrating my Mama. She deserves it!

Little V had his six-month appointment on Monday. He's a whopping 22lbs, 12oz! BIG, happy, sweet baby. He currently grabs and chews anything in sight, and can roll everywhere. I have a feeling crawling will come soon. And there are no teeth in sight, which has made these last six months a breeze...just saying a prayer that they don't all decide to come in at once!

My sister-in-law was in town this week. We celebrated the hubs' mother on Tuesday night, and cooked dinner for her. W is currently obsessed with Memory...and is surprisingly really good at it. We normally wait until after L goes to bed, because if we don't, this is what happens.

While snapping a photo of W's braid, so she could see what it looked like, little L wanted to be just like his big sis and pose too. Love little moments like this!

Tory Burch Sunglasses

E and I waited in the car yesterday, for the friendly employees at Walgreen's to bring a canvas print I had ordered out to our car. This was so nice not to have to bring all the kiddos in with me!

This was the first time little L has actually stayed in one place, for more than five seconds, without being strapped/buckled down. This was while waiting for the girls to finish their dance lessons. He's really growing up!

Thirsty Thursday: Mother's Day Sparkling Cocktail + Saks Sale

Mother's Day is this Sunday! Why not whip up this sweet drink for her, to celebrate! Or if you're a mother, to celebrate YOU! I found this yummy recipe, HERE. Enjoy!

Mother's Day Sparkling Cocktail

A bottle of chilled champagne or sparkling wine*
Grand Marnier or orange liqueur
3-4 grapefruits, juiced
Star fruit for garnish

In a champagne flute, pour 1/4 cup of grapefruit juice and one tablespoon of orange liqueur. Fill the rest of the glass with 1/2 cup of champagne. Garnish with a slice of star fruit.

*You can make a non-alcoholic version of this drink by combining freshly squeezed grapefruit juice with lemon-lime seltzer or soda.

This recipe yields enough servings for you and your mom to have a REALLY fun afternoon. Enjoy!

Wednesday Whereabouts

Here's what we've been up to this past week...

Yesterday, it was finally sunny here. So I started my new book outside, Grace, while the kiddos napped!

This was the one glimpse of sun we got on Sunday morning. Had to get outside, before it poured, yet again.

The girls and I had the best time seeing the musical, Pinkalicious! It really was a great show, for both kids and adults!

E has already stated that she wants to be a big cupcake for Halloween this year.

This is always W's favorite part - looking at the musical instruments in the music pit. She even pointed out all the instruments to the conductor, in case she didn't know what some of them were.

Little L can't get enough of the Nature Museum. He loves looking at all the animals, and the fact that he can run around and do as he pleases for a little while.

The girls are still enjoying dance. E is the one on the right, next to her teacher.

And W is such a free bird. See the above interpretive dance for yourself. (Her teacher did not instruct them to do this...they were all supposed to be waiting in line.)

V is growing up way too fast, and is the happiest baby.

And L is seriously teething (meaning, lots of fussing lately). Poor thing.

Loving my latest Essie color, Mod Squad. Such a fun Barbie pink!

Since it rained for much of Cinco de Mayo this past Sunday, we did lots of lounging around...with margaritas of course.

How I Do It: Laundry

A chores list I found during my parents' move, from when I was younger...

And another chores list for me, from my mom.

I know I'm going to be the same way with my kiddos.

How I Do It: Laundry

(For six!)

Sorting it. Confession: I don't. I know I'm crazy, but I've never separated my laundry into colored, whites, towels, etc. Even in college, when it was just me, I never did. It all goes in together, whatever is laying around, I grab it all (towels, children's clothes, my clothes, etc.) and toss it in. I also never used baby detergent, like Dreft. Thankfully, the kids have never had a reaction to it, so that saves me an extra load too. Trust me, I would have used it if their skin was affected, but it wasn't.

Having a laundry lady. In my dreams! Growing up, I was fortunate to have a lady that did our laundry. Y'all, she even ironed our t-shirts. And then once I was college-bound, it was me that did the laundry. That's probably why I never learned that you were supposed to separate the laundry. The hubs showed me how, once we were married, but I still don't do it. And honestly, yes, he showed me how, but if it were up to him, the laundry would never be done. He'll be the first to admit he's a slob. Oh, and that one time he tried, he washed the laundry with a red crayon. I tried to salvage the little Lilly shifts that were in the load, but most of it had to be tossed. Red stains on things is not a nice look...

The perfect fold. Working retail early on has its perks. My sisters will even tell you to this day that by working at Banana Republic in high school for a stint, I perfected my ability to fold clothes. It's super neat. Seriously, you should see my t-shirt drawer. I honestly LOVE folding laundry. It's meditative or something, so is sweeping. Sometimes, when the kids are playing, I'll go outside and sweep off my back deck and front steps, to have some quiet time to myself.

My washer and dryer are in the basement. Out of sight, out of mind. While it does have its perks, I'm not constantly staring at a pile of laundry everyday, it does have its disadvantages too. The laundry pile can get rather large, when all I'm doing it tossing down dirty clothes for a few days, before finally deciding to get it done. And committing to getting it done, can entail up to five loads at a time...

Dirty everything 24-7. The neverending story. I don't think I go one day where the laundry bin is completely empty. I learned to accept that awhile ago. Having four young kids means that someone always has something dirty to throw in there, not to mention my clothes, and the hubs'. And I also always change my kiddos into pajamas when they nap, so I bring it on myself, that I have so much laundry. I don't even want to think about the laundry when they're older, when their clothes are bigger. We'll leave that for another post, a few years from now!

Fashion Friday: Pineapple Cocktail, OOTDs and Sales

First and foremost, Cinco de Mayo is on Sunday! The day I can eat chips and salsa, and sip on margaritas and Dos Equis, to my heart's content, all because it's a day to celebrate the 5th of May! Ole!

Cheers with me, with this yummy cocktail I found via Ina Garten (aka The Barefoot Contessa)...

Pineapple Margarita

Yield: 8 Cocktails

Ingredients

2 cups lime juice, about 20 limes

2 cups white tequila

2 cups Triple Sec

2 1/2 cups fresh pineapple juice

Fresh pineapple slices, for garnish

Combine the lime juice, tequila, Triple Sec, and pineapple juice. Fill a cocktail shaker 1/2-way with ice and fill 2/3 full with the margarita mixture. Shake for 30 seconds and pour into glasses. Decorate with fresh pineapple slices and serve ice cold.

*I'd probably still salt the rim. The perfect combo of savory and sweet!

Thirsty Thursday: The Brown Derby

With the Kentucky Derby being this weekend, along with Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, I thought I'd bring you two cocktails for the weekend. The Cinco de Mayo cocktail will be featured on tomorrow's post. Today, I bring you the Brown Derby (I found it in a 2009 LA Times article).

1 ounce Woodford Reserve bourbon

1 ounce grapefruit juice

½ ounce clover-honey syrup (1 part water, 1 part clover honey)

In tin-on-tin shaker, add freshly squeezed grapefruit, then honey and bourbon.

Shake and strain into chilled cocktail glass (ideally, a 5 ½-ounce Champagne coupe).

The girls and I attended a princess tea party that their ballet studio at the Y hosted, this past Saturday. To say they had a blast is an understatement.

And the girls who played the princesses were the sweetest.

I'm not a huge fan of samples, because I stay true to what I always enjoy.

Wednesday Whereabouts: Final Day at My Childhood Home + Blog Sale

Well, today was the final day at my parent's house. The new owners arrived at the house at 10am. My mom, dad and I stayed until the last possible moment. Such a sad day. So many memories there...twenty-three years worth. But as I've said before, and with your supportive comments, I know that the memories will continue in their next house. So thankful for that!

If you're looking at the house, the right front corner wing of the house (pictured above) was my bedroom growing up (the only bedroom on the first floor). It was the old master, and I loved having my own space, away from my parents and sisters.

Yes, I'm crazy and all kinds of sentimental, and I took photos of every single thing.

Seriously makes me sad just looking at these little details.

Bye, bye house. One final goodbye!

Tuesday Trends: Misikko Flat Iron Review

I've had many readers email me about my hair routine. Well, let me tell you, first off, my hair isn't naturally straight. I wish! When I was younger, it was naturally straight, shiny and long. As I got to high school, my hair's texture started to change. It became frizzy and hard to handle. It wasn't until mid-college that I discovered a flat iron, and managed to control the frizz much more easily. More recently, I've been using the same straightener for the last five years, to tackle the frizz, after blow drying it, but not until a month ago, did I fall in love with a new hair straightener.

How I Do It: Morning Routine, Giveaway Winner

I think it needs to make its way into my summer wardrobe.

I hope y'all had a wonderful weekend! Ours was filled with lots of family time, and last glimpses of our family home, as everyone gathered at the house one last time. More photos saved for my Wednesday Whereabouts post.

How I Do It: My Morning Routine

(on a good day)

7:00 Girls up. They know the rule: No getting up before 7. I then let them watch a cartoon - Diego, Blue's Clues - basically whatever is on Nick Jr. at that time. Quickly give them their milk and a treat (Oreo cookie), only if they stayed in their bed all night.

7:05 I jump in shower.

7:20 Feed them all breakfast (usually yogurt, a banana and toast/bagel) - yes, they eat a lot, and aren't too picky - such a blessing! And feed Boozer his breakfast, too.

7:30 Clean up breakfast, and make their lunches for school, while they play together and read books.

7:45 Get them all changed, brush their hair, shoes on, and then I change too.

8:00 L and V awake, feed V his bottle, and give L his breakfast.

8:15 Pack up car (diaper bag prepped for errands, school bags, my coffee) and get their coats on.

8:30 All kids in car and head off to school (school starts at 9, and y'all, so far this schedule is on a good day, most days we're leaving the house at 8:45 because of minor hiccups here and there).

8:45 Drop girls off at school, while the boys and I go run errands, take a walk, head home, etc. W has school everyday, and E has it MWF, so on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we try and go somewhere fun with E.
