Kuala Linggi Revamp Bird House Test Run !!!

After doing up the top floor and the entrance hole areas I did a test run with the present of the BH owner Mr R.

He rushed from Kota Damansara, Selangor just to be with me and help in what ever he can.

One of the thing I did was to ask him to install those water filter(s). It seems that the water supplied via the main pipe was too dirty and will clogged the humidifier mist maker eyes.

The second thing that he did was to prepare his first Mutiara Aroma using those fermented bird shit and sea weeds.

I showed him the mixing method and how to spray the aroma on those walls.

Since he was around and those tweeters were set to play I conducted the first test run ever. The test run was conducted on 28th January 2012.

The number of birds responded was at least 400 to 600.

Mr R commented:

"Pak Harry prior to your revamp the number of birds that flew in I think was about 3 to 5 but now it's more that a few hundreds. Unbelievable and a miracle to me."

I told him that if he did nothing and hope for the developer to provide the system he will be doomed.

The number of birds that responded to the sound was about 7:25pm.

At first there were about 3-5 birds and soon after the number started to multiply exponentially.

Out of no where they stormed the entrance area and many will attack the power tweeters installed on the walls.

Beside attacking the tweeters some will hang onto the walls. At peak time there were more than 15 birds clinging closed to those power tweeters as if they were enjoying the vibration created by the sound.

The number of birds climbed every minute until at about 7:50. Most of these birds entered the BH and their number started to decreased and at 8:00 pm there were about 2-3 left flying around the entrance hole.

I believed most of them entered the BH.

I estimated that the number entered were about 600 or more.

I told Mr R that he was a very lucky man. Those birds seems to be coming from the Palm Oil plantation and nearly all that flew to his BH.

His comment was " Thank You Pak Harry".

I was very happy that those gadgets that I invented and installed did their part.

I am pretty sure that these gadgets will help many others who have difficulties in populating their BHs.

A Cave BH Under Construction In Vietnam !!!

A blog reader from Vietnam recently email some pictures showing a BH under construction.

The owner seems to have this idea that swiftlet loves cave environment.

As such he build his BH in a staggered roof system with about 12 layers.

The structure is build inside a kind of factory with covered roof to prevent direct sunlight shinning on the BH directly.

Waste Wood Corners With Half Curved Corner Covers!!!

I have transformed a normal waste wood corners into something new.

My main idea is to create additional type or place for swiftlet to build their nests on it.

With this new invention the birds will have the choice of building their nest at 90* angle, on the top of the half curved corner, two additional spots for the 130* nests areas.

Yes from a two nesting spots on the conventional waste wood corners we now gives those birds four.

What you need is a piece of normal left over nesting plank about 6 inches long and a curved corner cover cut into half.

Nail the curved corner onto the waste wood cover and install onto your nesting planks.

Choose the perimeter areas as your main target.

You can use this technique on a single waste wood corner or you can use two curved corners on on waste wood.

The next idea is to deploy the half curved corner covers on those nesting planks crossed points.

The idea is to create an additional location for those birds to build their nest on it.

Edible Figs Fruit Tree From A Nursery !!!

These pictures were taken two days ago when I was in SPatani.

During the holiday managed to have a good look at a young fig tree planted in a pot.

This young tree is doing well and all the leaves are new.

It seems that when it was first planted all the old leaves dried and shed away.

The new leaves looks fresh and big.

You can also look at those young buds young leaves growing on the top.

I have not decided where it will be planted but there are a few people who have called to buy it.

I need to work extra hard to get more young trees so that I can help to propagate the trees to more swiftlet BH s.

To those who celebrate Chinese New Year, I would like to wish all the very best and let us hope that the year will see some solution to the dwindling price of nests.

I was make to understand that by April 2012 the price will be back to its normal range. However please do not expect too much. It might not be true but you never know.

Well now let us talk more about swiftlet farming.

Another interesting message from Ulu Langat. Remember this guy who was with me on NTV 7. His name is Mr Mohammad Yakoob. He was the one who said that if his BH does not work he will turn it into a Karaoke lounge:

Pak Harry, after 3 months of not disturbing the BH that we put into operation this is my report. The top floor was with 65 bird shit spots and about 18 nests.

The middle floor was with about 30 bird shit pots and about 10 nests.

The lowest floor was with about 15 bird shit spots with 3 nests.

What do you think of the result?

"Do you remember the number of birds that responded to our bird call test? There were only about 120 birds that turns up. If you equate the number of nests and bird shits I think you pull nearly all of them."

Super Pheromone Working Well In Sabah......

The exact words from a very satisfied user of those Super Pheromone.

I remember bringing the item to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah by hand during my trip to deliver my talk about swiftlet farming organized by Putri Swiftlet last year.

I met her and handed the items.

I told her roughly how to apply them and Hola it seems that the pheromone works well with her BH.

Now she is asking for more of the items to continue with the success she is experiencing.

This kind of result is good for our research in finding what can be used to increase the number of BH.

I plan to see her personally this February 2012 and perhaps ask her to take some photos to share with all my blog readers.

I am hoping that there will be more people getting the same result with the pheromone.

While in Kuantan, Pahang I used two cans and conduct some king of experiment by spraying them onto those fake nests.

I hope the research done will bear good result.

If the method I did gives good results, I will give all of you the method I did.

Another Poorly Designed BH In Karak !!!

I was about to reach home at Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur when a BH owner called for some help.

He sound very depressed and wanted to talk to me about his 9 month old BH located in Karak, Pahang.

The best was to meet me so that I can perhaps understand his situation.

I drove to Kajang, Selangor where he make his call and in no time he poured his problems.

What I can say was "Give me the opportunity to visit the BH and access the situation both external and internal.

This evening I took a one hour drive to Karak and after about 10 minutes drive deep in a Palm Oil plantation I saw his problematic BH.

From outside the BH looks okay but the moment you entered the BH you can immediately understand the problems.

He indicated that the BH was put into operation in August 2012, about 5 months back.

There were some traces of bird shit spots on the floor however most of them were not solid. It looks like most of them have left the BH.

The external sound was not running or with proper volume, I told him.

The biggest mistake was the positioning of the entrance hole area and the Lubang Antara Lantai (LAL).

The two should be closed to each other but the builder make a poor decision.

The nesting planks looks whitish in colour and I think it was not those red meranti, which I love to have. The wood must be either dirty, covered with fungus or discoloured.

The ceiling planks arrangements where not the same on the third and the rest of the floors. The third floor was with single step while the lower floors were with three steps.

The number of tweeters deployed were reasonable but there was no cluster tweeters.

There was only one type of piezo tweeter. The contractor used the no brand 2"x5" tweeters for internal and external. You cannot pin point which is which.

The entrance hole at the monkey house was a bit too low. I would like it to be about 2 feet higher and on the left hand side. Currently located on the right hand of the Monkey House wall.

There was only one entrance hole. I prefer at least two holes.

All the three nesting rooms were opened with no partitioning or VIP room. I insisted to have at least one VIP room per floor.

The amplifier used to play those internal and external were those cheap and low quality type.

There was no hexagonal tweeters used at the roof top area.

You can see why those birds were not interested to stay in this 360,000 ringgit BH.

He needed my expertise and I promised him that I will try to transform the BH into it's real potential.

My promised to him was to bring in at least 30-50 bird shit spots within the first month of operation. These bird shit spots shall be a sure signs of nests within the next 3-4 months.

I hope I can turn around this BH and ensuring that his investment will result in some income.

Bernama report this three days ago.

The requirements here seems to be the ignorance of Nitrite in bird nests.

Asking for 0 part per million is closed to impossible since they are neutrally form.

It is hope that a mutually agreed level will be announced soon so that the price of bird nests will be lifted to a more profitable level.

KUALA LUMPUR: Starting this year, local companies exporting swiftlet nests to China are required to obtain three quality certifications before their products will be allowed to enter the republic, according to Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar.

He said the quality certifications were the Veterinary Health Mark (VHM) certificate issued by the Veterinary Department, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) certificate issued by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the health certificate issued by the Health Ministry.

The three certifications are aimed at ensuring the quality of the Malaysian swiftlet nests would meet the standards set by the Chinese government, he told reporters after opening Malaysia's first Authentic Bird's Nest Depository and Trade Centre in Puchong near here on Monday.

"These quality certifications must be adhered to in order to meet the strict requirements set by the Chinese government after they agreed to accept swiftlet nests from Malaysia last year.

"However, the Chinese government has also required that only bird's nests with zero part per million (ppm) of nitrite are allowed to be exported to the republic," he said.

Noh said it was very difficult to obtain swiftlet nests with zero nitrite level, but the ministry was hoping that the Health Ministry could set a minimum and acceptable nitrite level for the issuance of the certification purposes.

The minister said the company which obtained the three quality certifications would be allowed to use the "1Malaysia Best" brand on their swiftlet nest products, but they also had to identify a strategic partner in China to ease the trade and monitoring process.

"Their partners in China will also be required to promote swiftlet nest products bearing the brand of '1Malaysia Best' as the ones having the best quality and safe for consumption," he said.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry Food Safety and Quality Control Division senior director Dr Noraini Mohd Othman said the swiftlet nest products containing high level of nitrite could pose a threat to human health and could also cause cancer.

"We will announce the acceptable level of nitrite in swiftlet nests after the ongoing discussion between our experts and their counterparts in China is concluded," she said. - Bernama

Revamp Works At Kuala Linggi Is On !!!

Take note that the revamp works on a BH at an Eco Park closed to Kuala Linggi river is confirmed.

The owner was pretty excited to inform me that he wanted me to mobilize to site by tomorrow Jan 20th 2012.

My response to him was simple. You just let me have the keys and I will do my best to arrange to be on site as fast as I can.

Remember this particular BH is in an Eco Park and it was the first to be put into operation. There are already 4 more about to be put into operation.

I was told that there will be another 30-40 more lots that are ready to be erected with the exactly the same designed BHs.

I was not surprised with this owner when he took me for a visit, two weeks ago.

After the short visit I told him that it is very common that the developer will do the minimum just to me the contract obligations. He need to revamp if he wanted to see faster results.

There was nothing special inside the BH and if he continue as it is he will suffer terribly for a very long time.

Since there are many modern gadgets, sound system, accessories to lure birds into the house and expertise from experience BH owners, there is no reason why he could not upgrade the BH condition.

I think he was very lucky to have discovered my blog and understand the important of making the birds better prepared to stay in front of his neighbours.

I will do my up most best to turn his BH to be the best among the rest within the area.

That was my promise and I hope to keep it for a long time.

Tomorrow I will pack the first load of items plus my workers to move to the location.

Will start work during the weekend even during the CNY.

He wanted the BH to be up and running within 3 weeks from mobilization date.

Roxbrough Fig Trees At UKM, Bangi Campus !!!

Today, January 15th 2012, I was given a short tour to view at closed range of a Figs tree whose fruits can be eaten.

The taste of the fruit is closed to those hairy peach fruit.

Some people said that by eating the ripe fruits you will be able to purge those worms out of your stomach.

The leave can be turn into tea and it can cure high blood pressure (what they said).

This morning my wife and me was invited to view a number of these figs trees located inside University Kebangsaan Malaysia at Bangi, Selangor compound.

I was pretty excited to have a close range look on the 15 feet high trees.

The best was that all the trees were fruiting and some are ready to be harvested.

I plug three of those ripped fruits and ate them after proper cleaning being done.

The fruit is quite big and they tend to grow on a special branch that seems to be for fruit growing only.

What Volume Setting Is Ideal For the "Last Tango" Setting ???

I received this special request about the volume setting of my "Last Tango" invention.

"Pak Harry what will be the best volume that we need to use for the "Last Tango" gadget?"

Remember the "Last Tango" is something very effective to pull those wild birds into your BH. I invented is about three months ago, where I will install a separate set of power tweeters (about 10 to 14 pieces) around the entrance hole areas (for top entries) and connect to a timer with cable connected to the external sound amplifier.

To realize the effectiveness you need to push the volume higher than the standard external sound volume and played only during those peak hours.

What volume should it be tuned to?

My best advise to those who have the system is to observe the behaviour of those swiftlet when they passed by your BH.

You need to do the observation and have your helper to tune the volume to the level when the birds flying home will start to be affected by your external sound.

Talk to your helper with your mobile phone and observe the bird's behaviour.

The moment they started to jump into your open roof or your monkey house opening, that is the best volume using the selected external sound.

You might need to re choose the volume when you have decided to change the external sound.

Once you have the right volume, stick a tape on the volume control area and put a marking.

In this way you will know the right volume during your visit or if you accidently touched the volume knob.

I hope this short clarification gives you a better idea on the volume to be used for your BH "Last Tango" sound system.

Two New Opportunities For Those Who Would Like To Learn !!!

The first unit will be in Kuala Linggi, Melaka and the second unit is in Karak, Pahang.

Each unit will need about 2-3 weeks to be completed.

If you are interested to learn on the proper techniques to get those birds into your BH try to come learn the things that I do to rehabilitate these two BHs.

The most number of people that I can allocate is 3 persons per BH.

You need to be prepared to come and stay somewhere near the BH and we shall travel together from where we stay to the BH on a daily basis.

The cost for this hands on opportunity of your lifetime is only RM 1500 for a period of at least 3-5 days. I will select the best timing when you should come and join the revamping works or if you wish to you can come and join the operation upon starting of work until the end of the revamp works.

It shall be on first come first served basis.

Remember this kind of arrangement is very rare and no one will allow this kind of site training.

The fee will be covering my professional & training fees. You need prepare extra money to cover cost of lodging and meals.

They Come By The Thousands !!!

This video clip shows how you can get a few thousands swiftlet during your bird call test if you know where to find them.

I took them about 6 months ago in Kelantan.

The test was conducted just after sun rise at about 6:30 am.

The key issue here is there are suitable land which those birds passed by day in and day out if you know how to find them.

Once you have located this type of location your risk in building a BH is minimum.

If I am given the responsibility to build one, I am sure I can get 1000 nests within 12 months.

Just keep searching for this type of location and you will be a successful swiftlet farmer.

Another JV BH Revamp Job Completed In Gambang, Pahang !!!

Last week completed a revamp BH job in Gambang, Pahang.

This three stories building was converted into a BH about 1.5 years ago.

The owner was not happy with the performance with only 10 nests after 1.5 years into operation mode.

"Pak Harry I need your expertise to bring in more birds. I know you can do it. I have been following your Kepong BH revamp closely and the owner is happy with your job."

"To be frank I was the one who introduced you to Mr.Wong who was having problem with his unit."

That was how I was tested and only after I performed she called for help.

This Gambang BH was converted by her brother in law who owned about 5 BH in Kuantan, Pahang.

One of his BH is currently producing more than 30 kilograms a month.

I told her it does not mean that if he owned a successful BH he is an expert with BH conversion.

The first time I entered the BH I listed a long list of flaws that I told her what to do.

Initially I thought she wanted me to give my advise but it seems that she prefer myself to mobilize my workers and equipment to site and get it done as per my visit report.

After the two weeks revamp job, I tested the system implemented.

Within two short days the result was simply astonishing.

From only 10 spots of bird shit (below the existing 10 nests) it shot up to 45 spots. Mostly on the highest floor (30 spots) and the middle floor (15 spots).

I told the owner to stay away for at least two to three months before entering for inspection.

This unit now will be under my care for 20 years on a mutually agreed JV with the owner.

I was given 30% for each harvest made.

My aim was to get 100 nests within the first 12 months.

By 24 months I am looking at 200 to 300 nests.

Those of you who own a BH with no decent number of nests please let me have a look at your BH and perhaps I can help in reactivate it.

You can consider doing it on a JV basis or .........

The choice is yours but my main objective is to revamp a slow moving BH.

Kuala Linggi Eco-Park!!!

I was invited to inspect a newly completed BH in Kuala Linggi, Melaka today.

I started as early as 7:30am from Kuala Lumpur and arrived at the said location at about 9:00am.

Hmm quite a long distance considering running at about 100km per hour on the average.

The owner admitted that he has very little idea and went in with the hope that the venture will promised an early retirement.

He begin to realize that there are many things that are not included with the signed S&P agreement on the one acre land and the ready made three stories building.

His curiosity landed my name and quickly rushed to meet me for a short discussion.

I was invited and since I was pretty free this week I accepted the offer.

One of the first observation made upon entering the BH are as follows:

1) The concept of buying a BH erected by a developer sound very simple and attractive. The developer will give you all kind of guarantees of good returns within less than 2-3 years.

2) The actual fact is that the BH was build with minimum features to even pull a set of birds into your BH.

3) You will be very surprised when you carry out the bird call test only 200 birds will response but the number of BHs already build is 5 with 40 more to come.

4) The surrounding areas were simply empty with no insect generating features at all.

5) Internally the nesting planks looks cheap and with signs of fungus growing.

6) Most of the nesting planks looks dirty with a number of foot markings.

7) Most of the nesting planks are with huge gaps with the ceiling.

8) The number of tweeters were little and most of them are with no brand name indicated on the back.

9) The cable used are those low quality type.

10) The nesting planks are far apart to reduce the wood tonnage.

11) There will be no crossings with additional planks.

12) No special features like fake nests and etc.

13) The sound used are not suitable and you will be surprised how irritating the internal sound was.

14) The entrance hole have very little gadgets to lure birds into your BH.

15) The amplifiers used were those lowest grade type that are fit for your chicken farm?

16) No VIP rooms created.

17) The whole BH smell very thick cement aroma.

18) There are no external sound inside the nesting rooms.

19) The floor were flooded with water leaking from those water hose.

20) Only two chicken coop humidifiers on the lowest floor.

21) The were at least 5-6 signs of owls entered the BH.

It was more like a shoe string budget BH with minimum configuration just to meet those basic terms and conditions indicated in your S&P agreement.

I was taken back and shook my head asking myself: "How do you aspect the owner to recover his investment if he was totally dependent on the so called developer?"

From supposedly becoming a healthy and wealthy person, you will be a slave to your banker.

I told the owner point blank that he will have the most 10 nests for the rest of his life if he do not make any effort to upgrade the BH internal and external.

My advise to any of you out there if you wanted to buy a BH developed by a so call eco park developer is do not put too much hope on the developer.

You need to rectify the BH yourself first before putting your BH into operation mode.

If you have no knowledge get someone who has and never place your fate in the developer's hand.

Prefabricated Modular BH Concept ....

About one month ago I was contacted by a developer who wanted some new ideas of building BHs.

"Pak Harry, is there any BH designs that are based on modular system? We can prefabricated the structure and install them at site."

Hmmm ...... I told him give me one month and I will come out with one.

I sat down with my architect and his answer was:

"No Problem Pak Harry. I will come out with a draft and after that we shall proceed with the proper design."

I think it is possible and the only thing to do after this design is up is to arrange for a suitable fabrication yard to provide the the cost to construct them.

I am looking for my reader to give me some indication if they can help in locating the right fabricator.

At the same time I would also love to have some investor to finance the cost to construct at least one unit.

Those who own a piece of land and have intention to build and own a BH please try to consider this marvellous idea.

Year 2011: Marvellous Discoveries Year !!!

The year 2012 just started and we have little choice to leave year 2011.

To me year 2011 was one of the best year of my life as a researcher in swiftlet farming.

I discovered so many interesting ideas and have with little reservation shared all of them with my blog readers.

Most of them will help to improve your BH if you know exactly how to implement them.

I also feel great to have the honour to teach more than 300 newbies who attended my "Secrets on Swiftlet Farming" Seminars.

I believed all of them benefited from my talks and I hope many will now be successful swiftlet farmers.

The only sad back was the nitrite problems found in mainland China that causes the raw and processed nest drop to record low.

I still believed in this white gold and I read somewhere today that the Chinese authorities will put the product back to its normal position by April 2012.

Among the many discoveries that cherished my 2011 are as follows:

1) Dual entries system.
An interesting BH design that I happened to discover when I visited a BH in Pekan Nenas. The person who use this design claimed that the number of birds occupying his dual entries design increased three times.

2) The VIP room.
An interesting idea to create a room at the end of the nesting room. Also discovered accidently during my visits to more than 10 BHs. Those birds in these 10 BHs simply loved to hide themselves in these specially made rooms.

3) The Last Tango sound arrangement.
Discovered very recently about two months ago. The idea is to blast the external sound volume louder just before those birds started to return to your or neighbours BH. In Peninsular Malaysia the time is around 6:50pm until 7:45pm.

4) The Cluster tweeters arrangements.
One very distinct observation in many BHs I visited are those bird shit spots on the floor. I would say that 80% of them are found below those cluster tweeters. Base on this observation I adopted the use of cluster tweeters in all my new BH or those revamped.

5) Chandelier Tweeters.
If you think cluster tweeter is good, what if you put 8 tweeters in one location? I have tried this interesting idea and it works marvellously. I coined the word chandelier to give it a special place where more birds will be sharing the same place.

6) Kite Tweeters.
Another strange idea which was used in a BH in Kota Bahru Kelantan. If you tenant do not want to populate any area inside your BH, you might want to consider using this special "Kite Tweeters".

7) Waste Wood Corners.
What can you do with those excess nesting planks that are shorter than a foot? Use them as your waste wood corners. I have seen how they help to populate a BH in Kelantan. If you are smart you can help to populate all those areas that are not 90* corners.

8) Mutiara Aroma.
The cost to buy any aroma in the market is way to high for an average income swiftlet farmers. I stumbled into this formulation and did my own mixing. The moment it works I shared this formula with at least 30-50 people so far. It will cost you less than 10 ringgit a litre to make.

9) External Sounds.
Most of my recommended sounds works well in many locations. The best are those proven in so many locations. Good examples are : marvellous cloud, Tongkat Ali, Pukau, King Kong, Black cloud, Super 208, Diamond, Pandora3 and Lady Gaga. I strongly believed that if you wanted to start your sound collection try to start with these few.

10) Internal Sounds.
The best was to introduce the sound called Superbabyking. This sound was actually Babyking sound but I modified it to increase the percentage of baby sound in it. It works well in many places and one of them was in Yong Peng. A swiftlet farmer is distressed called for help to stop those birds that entered the BH from running out once the external sounds were stopped. I recommended this sound and it works.

11) Sound Arrangements.
I toiled with the idea that if you want to extend the effectiveness of any sound is to use them only during those peak hours. I came out with a series of sound put together in a single thumb drive. Each of these external must be modified so that they are equal length (60 mins) and their volume be within the same range. You then arrange the sounds to be in a series where the most effective sound be played only at the most effective time.

12) The internal sound selection.
What will be the best sound for your BH? The answer I discovered was simple. Get the most effective sound and modify it to have 60% of it those baby sound. If you know that effective sound you can just use those sound editor software to modify them.

Well those were the 12 discoveries. It looks like I discover one every month.

I hope to discover more or less the same number this year.

Good Morning Pandora 3 !!!!

Pandora is a planet with hanging rocks in the film AVATAR.

Very early this morning I was at a BH whose sound was changed to test my old sound that I modified in house.

I have this gut feeling that a good set of sound for our BH must be not only properly selected but also properly set when it should played and at what volume.

What I did yesterday was to install a set of sounds that were specifically set for the morning session (7:00am until 1:00pm).

There are six 1hour slots.

What I did was to slot this new modified sound that runs from 7:00am to 9:00am (2 hours).

My main idea is to attract those birds especially the young birds into my BH entrance hole.

If you think carefully, everyday there will be some new or young birds that took their first flight after they reaches 45 days old.

Their parent will no longer feed them. They need to find their own food from that day when they flew out of the BH.

In view of their wings are not that ready with enough muscle to fly very far, they will usually will not fly very far from their nesting place. They need to come in to rest once a while.

During this flying and resting they might be flying closed to your BH assuming they were brought up in your neighbour's BH next door.

This will be the best time to lure them into your BH with the most appropriate sound(s),

Once they entered your BH you have a 50:50 chances of getting them to be your permanent tenants.

I took the whole two hours from 7:00am till 9:00am to observe how effective was this new sound.

WoW..... I was very impressed with the reaction of nearly every birds that passed by the entrance hole.

Nearly all will enter the hole and stay for at least 5-10 minutes.

Just imagine looking at a single bird flying from any direction towards your monkey house and suddenly when they came closed to the entrance hole they will immediately swerve their flying direction and flew straight into the house.

It makes smile every time that happened. I think that should be the way a BH sound should perform.

I lost count the number of birds that were lured into the entrance hole but it was reasonable (I think it was above 30-50 birds).

The best is yet to come.

This modified sound is called "Super Pandora", a one hour sound.

My next idea is to create a suitable internal sound to compliment the Super Pandora that will make those birds that entered will stay longer.

Nice To See Your BH With Lots Of Birds Flying Right Into the Entrance Hole !!!

One of my biggest satisfaction is to watch those swiftlet being sucked into any of those BH which you owned or looking after.

You feel great or somewhat a big achievement to be able to pull these wild birds into a house that used to be empty.

I am sure many swiftlet farmers out there feel exactly the same.

Can you imagine looking at the sky and suddenly a black dot flew near your BH and immediately after they hear the external sound they will zoom towards the entrance hole and gone inside for a number of seconds?

Yes some will enter for a few short seconds but there are also others that will enter for more than 5 minutes.

When evening comes those birds will start to reach your BH and there will be a kind of frenzy where each of them wanted to enter the BH first.

You might want to count the number of birds entering but once they reach say a thousand birds you will have a tough time to keep the counter running.

"Pak Harry you should count 10 birds and click one time. Or else there is no way you can keep pace with them."

Oh yes that was what I was asked to do by one of my worker during a bird count in Bentong, Pahang.

The more they came the happier you will be.

Just imagine you started with zero and now filled up with thousands.

The pleasure is pleasing and there is no instrument to measure your satisfaction.

To those who are still having little success with your BH, try to be patience however if the number keep staying stagnant, try to get some help.

There is nothing to be shy about it. Lots of BH owner faced similar problem and you might be one of them.

The only different is that you dare to find the proper solutions.

Try These Cluster Tweeters To Get Better Results !!!

Pak Harry what is your opinion on cluster tweeters? Is it effective and proven?

I have on a few occasions wrote about my opinions about cluster tweeters.

My recommendation is always "go for it".

It has become my very important part of my design in all BHs that are handed over to me to revamp.

Usually I will install at least 20 -30 cluster tweeters inside each VIP room. Beside that I also will install at least one chandelier and one kite tweeters.

What is a cluster tweeter?

Cluster tweeter consisted of four pieces of 2"x5" tweeters that are installed at your nesting planks crossings.

To install it is by installing four pieces of 45* corner covers. I prefer those straight wood as compare to those have wood shape.

Once your 45* corner covers are put in place you can now install four tweeters (2"X5") on them.

It is advisable to fix the cable wires prior to installing these tweeters.

The four tweeters will become the centre of attraction to those birds.

The tweeters will be facing the opposite site of each tweeter.

The configuration will provide a 360* sound directions.

In most birdhouses that have these tweeters the number of bird shits below them is more than 80% as compared to one single tweeter.

I have discovered this special tweeters arrangement way back in 2009 and I was very impressed with the results it generated.

Today a BH owner from Kuantan, Pahang called to provide his latest visit report to his and his neighbour's BH.

"Pak Harry, you are dead right. Both my BH and my neighbour's BH the highest number of bird shit on each floor were below those cluster tweeters."

"I would like you to come over and arrange to install more of these cluster tweeters."

During my recent visit to Yan Kedah, the same observation were seen in a BH that was new but with a few cluster tweeters.

The owner was smiling when I told him that nearly all those high number of bird shit on the floor were below those cluster tweeters.

He personally arrange to check on my remark and came back to confirm my observations.

Those Little Things That Can Improve Your Birds Population !!!

The new year seems to be a good start to me.

First was a revamp operation on a BH in Gambang. After almost a week revamping I did some test with my innovations.

1) First was to make the entrance area more attractive to those wild birds. I placed a hexagonal tweeter in the middle plus a few more water proof external tweeters.

2) Clean the pool about 10 wide X 15 feet long. There was no drainage pipe to remove those water. Got my boys to improvise a method to drain and clean it. Now, after cleaning, we can called it a pond.

3) The roof area where it will form a water curtain during heavy rain was provided with a gutter. I could not understand why the previous contractor ignore this important installation.

4) The flight path from the pond area into the nesting room area were initially with no pull tweeters. Now I placed about 8 tweeters. This will help to guide those birds into the house.

5) My "Last Tango" system was incorporated in this particular BH. The loud sound started at about 6:30pm and last up to 8:00pm.

6) The BH floor seems to be not water proof. I have decided to dry the water on the floor. They are seeping to the lower floor and damaging the nesting planks.

7) The wrongly installed crossing were removed and the affected planks were recycled to be placed on the ceiling floor. Looks much better now with no gaps.

8) Each floor I provided with two VIP rooms. One on the front and the other was at the back. The door of each VIP room was about 3.5 feet.

9) The walls were painted with black from 3 feet below the planks to the floor.

10) The number of internal sound tweeters now are almost doubled with lots of clusters (four tweeters at one location).

11) Each VIP room has a chandelier and a kite tweeter. The lower floor I provided with two of each.

12) I believed in installing those fake nests. Managed to personally installed about 250 fake nests plus 100 foam fake nests.

13) I have decided to use those cool mist humidifier operated via a automatic humidifier controller.

14) The floor were sprayed with Mutiara aroma for two days.

15) The fake nests were sprayed with special pheromone to promote those birds to stay.

16) I used two amplifiers, nikkodo 5201, for the external sounds. One for the morning and one in the evening.

17) The Last Tango was utilized by installing an auto changer with extra Hager timer.

18) The two floors internal sounds runs on two separate amplifiers provided by the BH owner.

19) The BH light controlling switches were moved to the data room.

20) I was obligated to install a CCTV camera with remote monitoring system.

During testing, yesterday, I can easily says that the number of birds that flew in during the peak hours was about 200 birds.

I planned to shut the BH for at least two to three months once completed.

Tentative date will be January 15th, 2012.

Nesting Planks Crossings Installation !!!

What can go wrong if you install the crossings for your ceiling nesting planks wrongly ???

This was what I came across at one new BH that I am taking over to nurse it to its original intention.

The BH has been into operation for almost 1.5 years and the result so far is only ten nests.

While inspecting the BH I discovered something that might be of interest to all my blog readers.

One very unusual thing that I have never came across are those nesting planks crossings.

The previous contractor was obviously very greedy and wanted the main row to be installed with a dual stack wood system.

The dual stack are made up of one piece of 8 inches by 1 inch plank sandwiched by two thick wood of about 4 inches by 2 inches each.

The irony was the way the crossings were installed.

After getting the dual stacks in placed the contractor installed those crossing at the lower part of the dual stacks.

Have a good look at the pictures provided.

Well what can go wrong with this kind of installation?

The answer is simple. Those birds seems to love building their nests on the top of the crossing planks.

Look at the additional pictures posted.

I think the nesting planks should be shortened and push to the ceiling and not at the lower stack.

This was one of my recommendation to the BH owner.

I am sure my idea make more senses than the previous orientation.

Foremost "Happy New Year" to all my blog readers and let us hope this year 2012 will be the most exciting year in your swiftlet farming.

I am looking forward for some exciting activities plus doing some interesting researches on how to get more birds plus accelerating their growth into all those Birdhouses under my care.

My first target will be a new JV birdhouse in Gambang, Pahang.

I was given this special task to modify a one year old BH, two stories, above a three stories shop house.

The owner knew me about three years ago and she have been following the progress of a BH converted by me in Kepong, Selangor.

What she did was to recommend my name to the owner and I was given the task to revamp the BH with minimal cost.

After 2.5 years into operation the nest numbers grew by almost 5 times.

At that some span of time she converted her BH using her "Brother In Law" (BIL) expertise. It seems that the so called BIL owned one of the most successful BH nearby.

Due to some reason the converted BH can only draw in 10 sets of swiftlet.

She called me to view the house and I recommended what she should do to improve the situation.

"Harry, enough is enough. After waiting for 2,5 years I told my BIL that I wanted to handle the BH myself. I want you to take over the BH and do exactly or better than what you did with the Kepong BH."

I took it as a nice challenge to revamp another failed BH and perhaps use it as a test centre for some interesting ideas that I have recorded in my diary for 2012.

These are some of those interesting things which I plan to execute this year.

1) Use a high end amplifier to see if the sound generated is better that those low end units.

2) Use a specially prepared enzyme to treat one of the four VIP rooms in this newly revamped BH.

3) To get a special aroma to be canned into a canister and spray periodically for a specific period of time.

4) To use a set of external sounds that were tested to be very effective during birds returning home in the evening.

5) The most effective sound shall be modified with baby sounds and shall be played as my internal sound.

6) The use of "Last Tango" sound system to be implemented to divert more birds into the house.

7) The pond located on the top floor to be used as insect generating pond.

8) The additional area on the second floor to be provided with specialized container to manufacture insects.

The affected BH is currently undergoing revamp operation and by next weeks it will be into operation.

This will be an exiting year to conduct more research and to provide more new ideas to all my blog readers.

Dual Entries BH In Vietnam Doing Well !!!

Sorry for not writing for the past few weeks.

Today got a few interesting news about a dual entries BH in Vietnam doing well and Ayer Kuning BH have more than 90 new bird shit spots after just 2 months in operation.

First about Vietnam dual entries BH.

I remembered visiting this BH somewhere in Can Gio, about 1.5 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City.
The owner sponsored my trip and when at site I gave some ideas on how to allocate some partitions to darken the floors.

After into operation for about 6 weeks the owner send the following report:-

"Dear Sifu Harry,

We've remitted xxx usd to your account for the perfume. Please check and notify me when you received.

For the last three months, i've involved in a project in Korea. I don't have time to take care of my birdhouses. My father and my brother handle them instead. I've just come back last week. Thanks god, our birdhouses is working great. The new birdhouse in Can Gio which using your dual entrance design has more than 100 birds stayed there, after 6 weeks put in operation."

A very favourable result and I hope the second unit which is about to be completed will perform better.

Two days ago I visited the Ayer Kuning, Perak BH after 2 months into operation.

The number of bird shit spots on all the floors was more than 90.

Prior to the revamp works there was nothing.

The most interesting was that the spots were distributed all over with the top floor the highest while the lowest floor was the second highest.

Why did more birds flew down to the lowest floor?

I think this strange phenomena is due to a water pool with a kind of fountain being erected on the lowest floor.

The water might have attract those birds to the lowest floor.

Strange but true.

Using The Same Sound For External And Internal is Working !!!

My latest on the experiment using the same sound for external and internal.

The idea is to choose the best and the most effective sound that attract the most number of birds to your rooftop and your external sound tweeter.

Once you have chosen the sound modify it for your internal sound with lots of baby sounds in it.

Save this as your internal sound copy.

You now have the external sound and a newly created internal sound.

Today I took some trouble to check with one of my student who wanted to volunteer to test the idea.

He is from the town called Raub, Pahang.

His answer was : "Pak Harry the two sounds are excellent. I am getting about 20% increase per month."

I am also testing the configuration at my Kepong BH.

My last visit was very encouraging.

The number of new nests seems to be higher than before.
